Study on Flotation of the Low-Grade Magnesite Ore

MARTENSITE transformations in ß Cu-Al alloys have been studied by Greninger1 and other investigators. According to Greninger, the parent phase ß1 an ordered body-centered-cubic structure obtained from ß phase by suppressing the eutectoid decomposition, transforms into an ordered hexagonal-close-packed phase in composition containing 12.9 to 14.7 pct Al. The M, temperature decreases with increasing aluminum content; for the alloy containing 14.5 pct Al, for example, the ß1??' transformation occurs below room temperature. More recently, Kurjumow2 studied the transformation in ß Cu-Al alloys with the addition of nickel. His report stimulated new interest in the subject due to the observation of completely reversible transformation without hysteresis in the transformation temperature ranging from 10° to —10°C. In the present paper some characteristics are described of the transformation of Cu-Al-Ni alloys that were partly studied by Kurjumow. Experimental Procedure High purity copper (99.999 pct) and aluminum (99.99 pct) and electrolytic nickel were used in the preparation, by the Bridgman technique, of single crystal specimens which contained aluminum and nickel of 14.5 and 0.5 to 3.0 pct, respectively. Polished surfaces were prepared mechanically. Specimens were then chemically etched to remove distorted material, homogenized at 1000°C for several hours, and quenched drastically to room temperature in a 10 pct NaOH bath to produce the parent phase ß1. The transformation was studied under a microscope and, in some cases, recorded by means of motion pictures. A device similar to that designed by Greninger and Mooradian3 was used to cool and reheat the specimens. Results and Discussion When the specimens were cooled below room temperature, the ß1 to ?' transformation began at 10°C with the appearance of ?' crystals In relief, Fig. la. As the specimen temperature dropped further, the transformation continued, either by the growth of the ?' crystals, with the ß1 — ?' interface moving into the ß1 phase, Fig. 1c and 1d, or by the formation of new ?' crystals, Fig. 1b. As a consequence of the former process, banded structure is observed as a common feature of the low temperature phase. According to the theory of the formation of martensite by Wechsler, Lieberman, and Read,' the bands of ?' phase are probably twin-related, as is the case in the diffusionless phase change of In-T1 alloys,5 but this was not revealed by X-ray tech- niques. New ?' crystals, in needle form, often emerged suddenly across the ?' bands during the transformation. These acicular crystals then grew, both in length and in width, see Fig. 2a through 2d. The transformation on cooling is completed at about -35°C. Upon heating, the reverse transformation started at —10° C, in a manner nearly opposite to the transformation on cooling, and completed at 35°C. There was no noticeable change in the transformation temperature when the nickel content was varied within the limits previously mentioned. Through control of the specimen temperature, the transformation can be started, stopped, or reversed at will. This phenomenon has frequently been observed in the martensite transformation of many nonferrous alloy systems. Other systems are Au-Cd6 and In-Tl.5 ow-- ever, in the latter systems, the transformation is accomplished by single interface motion if the specimen composition is homogeneous and the temperature gradient in the specimen is uniform and sharp, whereas in the Cu-Al-Ni specimens, only multiple interface transformation is observed. The speed of the interface motion appears to be a functionof the rate of temperature change and the temperature gradient across the specimen length. In one case, in which the temperature increased at the rate of 10°C per min and there was no temperature gradient along the specimen axis, the speed of the disappearance of a ?' plate was determined, by the study of the motion pictures made, to be 26 µ per sec. Quench markings were observed on the polished surfaces of specimens. The markings were grouped into one or more sets of different orientations, and were parallel in each set. The ?' plates formed in subsequent transformation were parallel to the markings, indicating that the ?' plates and the quench markings had the same geometric relation-ship to the ß1 matrix. The quench markings on two intersecting surfaces of a specimen were therefore used in the determination of the habit plane of transformation, by the trace method suggested by Barrett.' Results obtained from five sets of markings in three specimens indicate that the habit plane is an irrational plane about 2" from one of the {221} planes. This is very close to the habit plane (3" from 221 planes) of ß Cu-Al alloys containing more than 13.0 pct Al.1 The martensite transformation of Cu-Al-Ni alloys is reproducible. No sluggishness was found between consecutive transformation cycles, although a slight difference in the distribution pattern of the ?' plates was observed, compare Figs. Id and 2d. The transformation can be strain-induced. This characteristic has been tested by a simple method. Deep mining requires innovative approaches in ground control technology and the search for new ground support materials including backfill. There is a need to look at mine waste materials that may be available in deep mines to assess their suitability for use as composite backfill. Composite materials are widely used in all areas of engineering because of their unique and often superior structural properties compared to those of the singular constituent materials. Over the past few years, there has been a growing interest towards the investigation and use of various types of composite backfill materials as special applications fill in mines. A research project is being conducted at CANMET- Mining and Mineral Sciences Laboratories, Natural Resources Canada, to investigate the properties of potential ground support materials for use in deep mines. As part of this investigation, composite backfill materials were prepared by combining waste rock aggregates and mill tailings in various ratios, to determine their optimal mix proportions for strength development. A few cemented rockfill and straight tailings paste backfill samples were also prepared and were used as controls for the study. Two sample sizes were used for the investigation in order to evaluate the scale effects on the material behaviour. A set of samples were cured at 44 EC to simulate the anticipated temperature conditions in deep mines. A second set of samples were cured at 23 EC to provide engineering reference data. The test results show that compared to either the cemented rockfill or the straight tailings pastefill material, the composite backfill samples were the strongest and stiffest of all the test materials investigated in this study. The composite backfill samples also produced the lowest void ratio and porosity values compared to the cemented rockfill and the straight tailings backfill material. This paper will present the results of the laboratory investigations to date. It will also outline the on-going work at CANMET - Mining and Mineral Sciences Laboratories to further assess the ground support potential and viability of using composite fills in deep mines.

For processing copper, continuous converting has been successfully employed in a variety of locations, but for nickel, there has yet to be a successful commercial implementation of continuous converting technology. At Inco?s Copper Cliff smelter, there are specific requirements for the production of Bessemer matte relating to downstream processing that makes continuous converting for nickel mattes even more challenging. The nickel carbonyl refineries require very low iron levels in the matte, and the sulphur deficiency must be carefully controlled such that the appropriate quantity of PGM-rich metallics are produced from matte separation. The present paper outlines continuous converter technologies that have been implemented in copper, and evaluates their potential for nickel converting. The challenges of producing a Bessemer matte to the required specifications are discussed. The economic and environmental driving forces, and the challenges of justifying a novel technology in place of productive existing equipment, are discussed.

Understanding of the causes and to acceptance of ways to guard against explosions and their effects have been slow to spread from investigates to officials and Own to bosses and miners. Such belief is based on the human failure to maintain and observe necessary precautions. These failures, caused by inertia to change, carelessness, or reliance on continuance, of past explosion-free years, are being reduced in number and effect by education of miners and supervisors and acceptance of higher prevention standards.]

"Over the last four years, an international initiative, championed by Vehicle Projects LLC, the Fuelcell Propulsion Institute and Natural Resources Canada, has been active in carrying out research projects to prove out the concept of applying fuel cell technology to underground mining vehicles. These have been carried out by a consortium consisting of mining companies, equipment manufacturers, technology developers, national laboratories and consultants, with the participation of Canadian and U.S. mine regulatory agencies.This clean technology, which produces only water and electricity, would allow several advantages to be obtained, in the health area (by eliminating diesel emissions and reducing noise generation), in lowering production costs (such as reducing ventilation required) and lowering greenhouse gas emissions.This paper outlines the results obtained in several key areas, such as, the operation of fuel cells in underground conditions, risk issues related to underground and surface operation of hydrogen vehicles and hydrogen production and delivery systems, and the design and mining performance of the world’s first hydrogen mining vehicle, a mine production locomotive. The work to date on the fuel cell loader, designing the power plant and power transmission systems, operational requirements, and operating cost reductions is also presented."

"XPotential Products Inc. has developed technologies to convert auto shredder residues and other forms of plastic waste into useful products such as posts suitable for retaining walls and parking curbs. The technology is competitive provided low-cost plastic waste is available, and could have applications throughout the world. The paper describes the technology used and illustrates the various processing steps. Development of the TechnologyPresently, state-of-the-art auto shredding yields approximately 75% ferrous and non-ferrous metals and approximately 25% by weight of auto shredder residue (ASR). Advances in metal shredding and non-ferrous metal separation technologies turned XPotential Products Inc.’s attention to ASR as a potential revenue source, or at least a means to markedly reduce the cost of disposal. This abundance of nuisance ASR was, in the company’s view, a potential resource as derelict autos and white goods were similarly perceived 40 years ago. As owners of General Scrap & Car Shredder Ltd. in western Canada, XPotential faced significant disposal costs for four shredders. This journey began over 10 years ago and took many twists and turns until a final course of action was chosen. The recovery of the metallic portion of vehicles and white goods has reached technological maturity and attempts to add value are now achievable only in very small increments."

This paper reviews the formation of the Canadian Mining Education Council (CMEC) and its terms of reference. CMEC considers that Canada?s mining schools represent a distinct competitive advantage to the Canadian Mining Industry. The core objective of CMEC is to reinforce the links between the constituent schools and their individual Industry Advisory Committees. The latter traditionally provide the schools with a great deal of guidance on a range of planning issues, including recruitment, curriculum, research and infrastructure. Beyond those bounds CMEC intends to improve its ability to network with the industry and government. It is concerned overall with the objective to raise the quality and level of its educational and research contributions to meet the needs of industry and society.

"CONTROL STRATEGYThe Lake Dufault Division of Falconbridge Copper Limited has been concentrating a complex copper zinc ore since late 1964. An ARL X-ray on stream analyzer was installed in 1966 for process control. A Digital Equip-ment Corporation PDP8 was added in 1968 for more complete control. To improve the system the computer was exchanged for a Moded PDP-81 in 1971.The new computer is time sharing with 8K core memory and 32K disc storage. A new interface was installed to accommodate 14 X-ray streams and additional analog signals for process control. The system gave us additional capacity and flexibility to make changes in operating programs and control strategy while on line. As the computer is used for process control a modified focal language was chosen as the operating language for ease of operation. This language is more suitable for process control than for statistical work.The main components of the control system are(a) Computer(b) Interface(c) Production Control X-ray Quantometer(d) Teletype terminals(e)Reagent feeders(f) Sample SystemThe operation of the system consists in the computer selecting the various streams to be analyzed by a PCXQ Quantometer. When the flowing sample is presented to the X-ray the intensities of the various elements are read by the computer from analog to digital converter, the assays are then computed. From the tonnage and assays the computer is programmed to determine the amount of reagent added to various parts of the circuit. The computer drives the feeders via the interface for the required amount of reagent. After following a certain sequence the computer prints out the performance and control data on an ASR35 Teletype. The data is printed out approximately every seven minutes. Any des¬ired changes in the program or strategy can be made during operation via an ASR33 Teletype connected to the computer."

A recurrent concern in mining operations is how to deal with the large volumes of fresh water used which in turn generates large volumes of effluents that have to be treated. Water treatment can focus in one of two main strategies: treat the effluent as it is produced, or use a simulation tool to optimize water use in the process and reduce volume of effluents, contaminants concentrations, operational costs, and so on. This article shows a successful tool developed in Matlab-Simulink® that allows modelling a mining process and simulating potential improvements to evaluate the results. This tool has been proven in Cu-Mo operations and recently it has been used in poly-metallic operations. This article reviews the 4 Key Steps required to achieve our goals: a) Elaboration and verification of the mining Operation?s Block Diagram, based on a field survey; b)Model construction and input flows and qualities in selected streams; c)Model Validation and Simulation of new alternatives like recirculation, changes in reagents and dosage, partial treatment, flows merges/separation, and others; d)Development of the Optimal Solution which consists on determining the CAPEX and OPEX.

This is the seventh annual tabulation of royalty information. It is also the first year in which some data have been deleted to make room for new data. The concept of royalties evolved from a time when the government owned all of the land, including mines, to the situation where free miners won the right to claim minerals but paid a portion of their production to the royal treasury. Today, a mineral royalty is a payment to the owner of the mineral rights for the privilege of producing the mineral commodity. However, some people incorrectly believe that the selling price and the royalty are the same thing. The contract between the owner (lessor) and the mining company (lessee) is the mineral lease. Some clauses that are common to mineral leases include: identification of property, granting clause, reservations, definitions, royalty rate, taxes and title, indemnity, termination, inspection, assignability, successors, and reclamation. There often are variations in royalty rates for a given commodity that reflect differences in location, quality, market conditions or public versus private ownership. History In the time of ancient Rome, the government owned the mining properties by virtue of conquest. It would lease the mines to favored citizens who would pay rent to the State. Various conditions of sovereign ownership of both land and mineral rights continued in Europe until the Renaissance. As the laws evolved for land ownership by private citizens, the concept that minerals belonged to the State (King, Crown, sovereign) continued until about the 15th century. Free miners challenged the notion of sovereign ownership and won the right to discover and claim minerals. But a portion of their production had to be paid to the sovereign - a royalty. So, the original concept of a mineral royalty was a tax on production that was due to the Crown or Church. The term mineral royalty, as it is known today, is a payment to the owner of the mineral rights (formerly the royal owner) for the privilege of mining and producing the mineral commodity. The owner of the mineral rights, the lessor, and the mine operator, the lessee, enter into an agreement to mine the property. The agreement is the lease. While this concept is common, there are some who do not understand that the royalty is a portion of production paid to the owner as agreed on in the lease document. This author has seen reports where the selling price of a commodity has been quoted as the royalty. ("They get 70 cents a ton royalty at their pit and the guy down the road only has a 65 cent royalty.") These reports have been authored by people not familiar with the mining industry. Lease clauses In addition to the amount to be paid the lessor, there are several other items to be addressed in the lease agreement. The following list may not be all inclusive, but briefly describes most of the common clauses any good mining lease should contain. Identification: This opening clause names the owner (lessor) and the operator (lessee), the address of each, and gives the legal description of the property. Granting clause: This part of the lease gives the time period or duration of the agreement and information about renewal periods. It also has language about the exclusive right of the lessee to mine the property. Reservations: If the owner wants to exclude any portion of the property or set some specific conditions about the operation, there needs to be a clause that describes these reservations. Definitions: This section should address some of the technical terms that the lessor may find confusing - short tons versus cubic yards, dollars versus percentage of average selling price, any escalator indices such as consumer price index or producer price index, and material mined versus material sold. Royalty: This section spells out what the royalty rate will be, how often it will be paid, if there is an annual minimum, the pay dates, and how the records will be kept. This section also describes the conditions under which the lessee is exempt from the annual minimum - natural disasters, strikes, governmental actions, or other causes referred to as force majeure. Taxes and title: The lease needs to identify who is responsible for the property taxes, severance taxes (if applicable), and other taxes that relate to the mining activity - taxes on equipment, improvements, or stockpiles. This is a good place in the lease for the owner to certify his ownership of the property and its mineral rights and also certify that no other leases are in effect. The lessees may want language that allows them to pay mortgages or other debts on the property to keep their lease in effect. Indemnity: This portion of the lease identifies that the lessee assumes the risks for lessee's mining operation. Lessor should expect indemnification by the lessee through standard insur¬ance policies - workers compensation, liability and property damage. Termination: Both the lessor and lessee want language that will allow them to terminate the lease. In the summer of 2000, the ECR®/EFT® was first introduced in the Netherlands. After the first project a field test was performed together with other geophysical methods to prove the liability of these systems and their application in areas with soft soil and high groundwater levels. The objective of this test, which was carried out with three leakage detection systems, was to locate the holes. After this test several projects have been carried out. In this article the Dutch projects "Ringvaart Aqueduct" and "Bottleneck Limburg N296/N297" are mentioned.

El proceso de exploración en las campañas mineras es la primera fase del negocio y constituye una de los principales herramientas para su supervivencia, desarrollo y valorización de la industria. En este sentido, el presente texto señala la experiencia de Codelco en la exploración en Chile y su aplicación en Perú. Así, el conocimiento obtenido por Codelco realizado en el norte y centro de Chile, ha generado la formulación de modelos de exploración predictiva durantes los últimos diez años. Dichos modelos incorporaron el conocimiento logrado en el nivel de cada yacimiento individual, los entornos distritales y las franjas metalogénicas donde estos ocurren. En consecuencia, esta experiencia obtenida por Codelco y el reconocimiento de la continuidad en Chile, se extiende en el Perú y se presenta como una oportunidad de interés para el desarrollo de programas de exploración a futuro.

Changes in feed size distribution can have significant effects in rod mill grinding. The product sizing resulting from wet batch milling of a tin ore showed little influence on fines production after truncating the feed at either the coarse or fine end. The addition of fine material caused a less amount of fines to be produced and a possible increase in grinding at coarse sizes, although this is complicated by the changing feed size distribution. The changes in feed size distribution caused no tendency for preferential grinding of the cassiterite.

Passive treatment of mine drainage using constructed wetlands has been employed on coal and metal mine sites since about 1985. The technology has advanced significantly since then; there are currently over 600 of these systems treating coal mine drainage in the Eastern U.S. at flow rates of hundreds of liters per minute. Passive treatment performance at three metal mines discussed in this paper has been positive for a wide variety of flows, water chemistry, and climates. The sites include a high-altitude underground copper mine, acidic seepage from a gold heap leach pad, and pumped effluent from an active underground lead mine in Missouri.

Methane explosions have historically been one of the major causes of fatalities and injuries in underground coal mining operations. Advanced numerical models and predictive modeling approaches have the potential to offer optimized methane control solutions for general mine planning purposes and to address specific methane-related operational problems. This paper describes the development of reservoir models for the longwall mining environment and their application for investigating the influence of various completion design parameters on the methane drainage effectiveness of gob gas ventholes. The influence of increasing longwall panel width on the effectiveness of current gob gas venthole completion and placement strategies in the Pittsburgh Coalbed were evaluated and optimized designs developed to capture the expected increase in methane emissions on the larger panel.

The Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association (CEMA) specification B105.1 “Welded Steel Conveyor Pulleys” adequately defines standard pulleys for most aggregate material handling applications. However, many aggregate applications demand pulleys of higher capacity and reliability than that offered by CEMA pulleys. This paper examines the CEMA Pulley Standard and pulley specifications for aggregate applications requiring greater capacity and reliability than the CEMA Pulley Standard. Higher reliability increases the uptime and has a lower total cost of ownership.

Many mines around the world have been seeking ways to achieve sustainable developments and reduce operating costs. Rockbolting is a technology that needs to be considered as it provides a means of reducing operating costs and improving safety whilst allowing improved production to be achieved. The problem is how to introduce this technology in the knowledge that a successful outcome will be achieved. Rockbolting is a complete package and not only includes the consumable materials but also training, production of Codes of Practice, Monitoring Schemes, Refinement of Design and long term management of the systems. This paper explains the methods that have been applied for its successful introduction and discusses several case studies. It does not give fine detail but is intended to allow decision makers to gain a basic understanding of the method used to successfully introduce rockbolting to a mine.
