The ability of conveyor belts to transport large mass throughputs economically over previously unprepared ground has resulted in this system achieving great and extensive use. A significant component in this development is the conveyor belt itself. The development of high strength steel cord conveyor belts involves the optimising of splice design, the use of excellent rubber material especially in the splice, good craftsmanship during splice production and modern field vulcanisation equipment. The durability of a splice for belts of class St 3000 up to St 790 is expressed by the fatigue strength under dynamic stress. The results obtained with a test method and equipment developed by the University of Hannover indicate the present state of the art in this field. Belts of high nominal strength used on inclined long distance conveyors reach splice fatigue strengths of about 3000 N/mm. The design should only exploit approximately 50% of the fatigue strength determined in the tests as maximum operating stress. IMPORTANCE OF CONVEYOR BELT SYSTEMS The use of conveyor belt technology has expanded considerably over the last decades in the bulk goods transportation sector. Because of the favourable transport costs and the technology's adaptability to specific topographies, belt conveyors frequently represent the most economic solution. When flows of goods are large, as in German lignite mining operations, where masses of up to 40,000 t/h are given, it is the only technically feasible alternative. The use of belt conveyor systems allows the sensible distribution of the waste and the production of the coal (Hager, 1981). But this transportation alternative is also suitable when the masses involved are smaller. Whereas conveyor belts were only suitable for loose bulk goods up until a few years ago, today they are frequently also used for hard rock open cast mines, e.g. in the production of copper ore. Because of the favourable transport costs it is frequently still economic to use mobile crushers with a throughput of up to 10,000 t h 6 which breakdown the large blocks produced y explosives into transportable grain sizes. In many operations, trucks are only used to provide flexibility between the excavator and the crusher, i.e. over short routes, and the long, frequently steep, transport paths to the processing plant or to the spreader are undertaken by belt conveyors (Einenkel et al., 1992). The advantages of belt conveyors, i.e. to cope with large mass flows over inclines and down slopes of up to 1:4 have resulted in this system gaining very extensive use throughout the world. The conveyors can be installed over for the most part unprepared ground with suitable vertical radii, adapted to the locally available belt material. In the process individual conveyor belts with lengths of up to 15 km, and in the underground sector with lift heights of up to 1 km, have been built and operated. This great variety of application possibilities is complemented by a limited ability to pass through horizontal curves. This can be achieved with the help of design measures on the conveyor whilst bearing in mind the characteristics of the belt. STRESSING OF CONVEYOR BELTS IN DIFFERENT TYPES OF PLANT The advantage of conveyor belts compared with other systems is also to be found in the large available service-time window, i.e. the excellent reliability and the low costs of energy consumption and maintenance. It is in particular the reliability of a belt transport system which depends to a great degree on its main component, that is the belt - in all its different types and variations. For this reason, the belt is also given the greatest attention in the development of the individual components, because it is the belt which must be designed optimally with regard to various factors. Between 2002 and 2004, the performance of a six million ton per year iron ore beneficiation plant dropped significantly. In a classic case of “who done it,” was it the mine, the concentrator, an ore change, or something else? While average annual final product grade decreased 8% (indicated by an increase in silicate gangue from 2.76% to 2.99%), the weight recovery also decreased by 8% (from 37.92% to 34.79%). This represents a loss of 832,000 tons of iron ore worth about $16 million for the two year period! The concentrator had been optimized to produce a high grade wet concentrate as feed to the dry side of the plant. But, did optimizing an individual unit operation’s grade give the best overall plant performance? In this paper, the investigation and solution to this mystery will be revealed.

Passive seismic imaging is applied in underground mining to analyze the stress redistribution after the occurrence of a major seismic event. The velocity model is established to be utilized in velocity inversion. By comparing the images from velocity tomography on two different time scales, the average velocity of a mining area decreases significantly after the major event. It is highly likely that the stored energy level drops due to the occurrence of a major event. Also, total energy stored in micro-seismic events for each day is summed up and the energy change trend is plotted to illustrate the correlation of energy with a major event.

INTRODUCTION Good mine ventilation starts at the drawing board. A coal mine will either be adequately ventilated or not, depending upon how good a job was done in the planning. Poor planning will not only result in inadequate ventilation, but may also lead to low productivity. A mine foreman cannot achieve high productivity while trying to maintain 4.2 m3/s (9000 cfm) of air at his last open crosscut. PLANNING What will provide adequate ventilation? A rule of thumb in laying out a coal mine is to provide enough entries in the main entry system to keep air velocities at 2.5 m/s (500 fpm) or less; at this rate of flow, good ventilation may be expected. The intake and return air courses of a coal mine do not improve with age. Entries will deteriorate, ribs will slough, roof will fall, and clutter will accumulate. The resistance offered to air travel will continue to increase with each passing year. Providing enough airways for the present and the future cannot be emphasized too strongly. In order to better appreciate good planning and bring it into better focus, assume a hypothetical mine has the following features: entries 1.5 m (5 ft) high and 6.1 m (20 ft) wide; one intake and one return entry; the mine development is 4.8 km (3 miles) from the intake and upcast ventilation shafts; and the ventilation requirement is 141.6 m3/s (300,000 cfm). The flow behavior of bubble-particle aggregates in separation tanks is important for many flotation systems, particularly for wastewater treatment. These aggregates can be considered as the dispersed phase in a continuous liquid phase of water and the flow characteristics determine the efficiency of the bubble separation process. In this work, a general methodology for the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of a bubble separation tank is described. This system is analyzed by Eulerian-Lagrangian approach. The momentum transfer from the dispersed phase to the continuous phase is quantified using the Particle-Source-In Cell (PSI-Cell) method. With CFD simulations, the effectiveness of different tank design parameters are evaluated in terms of the extent of bubble separation.

The combined value of production of natural abrasives, which includes tripoli, special silica stone, garnet, staurolite, and emery, increased about 21070 in 1989. The increase in the value of staurolite and tripoli production was the result of an increase in the quantity of materials produced and an increase in the unit value. Emery decreased due to the significant decline in the volume of the material produced. Special silica stone experienced both a decrease in unit value and quantity produced. Garnet showed a small increase in quantity, but a decrease in unit value. The silicon carbide industry saw a slight decrease in the quantity produced and a 12070 increase in the value of production. The fused aluminum oxide industry showed a 5070 decline in the quantity produced, but enjoyed a 15070 increase in the value of production. Combined production for both industries decreased 4070 in quantity but increased 13070 in value compared with those of 1988.

Management of information systems for data collection is essential to maintain data integrity and continuity, and manage loss control on a large world-class mine such as Telfer Gold Mine. This paper aims to describe the individual systems and protocols of geological data capture at Telfer, then focus on Quality Assurance Quality Control data as an example of loss control in practice. Loss control systems are required to provide capacity, flexibility, structure and management tools to enhance data interrogation. The data that have been collected can then provide geological, financial, environmental, and contractual information to optimise management of business best practice. Telfer Gold Mine is a wholly owned and operated subsidiary of Newcrest Mining Limited. The mine is located in a remote area of NW Western Australia, and has been operating for 20 years. Geological data have been collected at Telfer since 1973. The data include drilling, assay, geological, survey, structural and geophysical data. Data management has evolved through many systems with data stored on many different hardware and software platforms. Commencing in 1995, collation, standardisation and validation of the historic data was completed. This has resulted in the first Access based drill hole database incorporating all available drilling data. This drill hole database, now hosted in SQL Server, is the hub for all geology related data management systems. The Telfer Gold Mine Geology Department has developed a series of inter-related database systems in order to manage the core geology business issues. Databases relating to drill hole planning, drill contract management, geological logging, accounting (standard costing, forecasting, invoice reconciliation), quality control (QAQC), and environment rehabilitation have all been developed to manage loss control. Management effort to provide adequate data systems and protocols has driven the system from concept to utilisation. The improved productivity, data integrity and data analysis capabilities provided by the new database systems at Telfer have allowed for greater confidence in decision making. Systems such as the drill hole and QAQC databases, when utilised in the proper manner provide up-to-date data analysis for resource audits and contract negotiations. The loss control systems are essential to maintain confidence in data integrity and hence directly effect the future of mining at Telfer.

Australia has known reserves of major minerals, which are adequate for both domestic demand, and for exports, and is a significant producer of bauxite; copper; diamond; gold; iron ore; lead; manganese; mineral sands (titaniferrous minerals, monazite, and zircon); nickel; salt; silver; tin; uranium; and zinc. China is the world leader in proven reserves of antimony, barite, ilmenite (titanium), magnesite (magnesium), molybdenum, rare earths, and tungsten. China also has large resources of low-grade iron ore and significant resources of other mineral commodities, such as coal, based on its production and export capabilities. India has significant resources of bauxite, barite, graphite, iron ore, and mineral sands.

For many years the concept of life cycle costing (LCC) was promoted for decision making in corrosion protection systems. Nevertheless, the application of LCC was limited. Input data was often sourced from suppliers and met with scepticism. As a result final analysis was often insufficiently rigorous to meet the needs of Project Managers in sound decision making. The need for expediency often resulted in non-optimal corrosion protection system specifications. With improved communications and the global reach of industries, case history data, based upon actual performance has been able to provide input to substantiate decision making. However, today?s focus upon sustainability whereby environmental, economic and even social aspects enter into decision making has extended LCC into Life Cost Analysis (LCA). In an LCA analysis energy and environmental inputs into systems are compared as part of an overall assessment. The development of Agenda 21 at the Rio summit of 1992 has challenged the countries of the world to look at sustainable development in every economic activity. This ranges from construction to mining to electricity production to automotive production, use and disposal. The protection of buildings, infrastructure and transport systems is part of the needs of sustainable development. Zinc based corrosion protection has been an important part of the arsenal of the corrosion protection industry. This paper will highlight the use of LCC and the development of LCA with reference to the use of zinc based protection systems in a number of important industries.

Sodium sulfate is an important chemical raw material that is being used in ever increasing quantities in modem industry. It comes on the market mainly in three forms: (1) Salt cake (Na2SO4), a relatively crude form of the anhydrous salt containing up to 3 pct impurities, and comprising about three-quarters of the North American production; (2) anhydrous sodium sulfate (Na2SO4), a refined form containing less than 0.3 pct impurities; (3) Glauber's salt, the decahydrate (Na2SO4.10H2O) containing 55.9 pct water of crystallization. Competing with salt cake from natural sources is byproduct salt cake from a number of industrial operations. For instance there is Mannheim cake resulting from the manufacture of hydrochloric acid by the reaction of salt (NaCl) and sulfuric acid in Mannheim furnaces; rayon cake, a high-quality product, resulting from the process of making rayon by the viscose process; chrome cake from the processing of sodium chromate to dichromate; phenol cake from the manufacture of phenol; also byproduct sodium sulfate resulting from the conversion of lithium sulfate to lithium carbonate; from the processing of sodium tetraborate to boric acid; from converting sodium formate to formic acid; and in the manufacture of cellophane. Sodium sulfate is also obtained as a byproduct in the manufacture of isosebasic acid. In addition strong competition has resulted from imports of byproduct salt cake from the chemical industries of a number of highly industrialized European countries. However in recent years due to technological changes the output of byproduct salt cake is rapidly diminishing and the natural deposits are becoming the most important source of sodium sulfate used in North America. For instance, the production of hydrochloric acid in Mannheim plants has become obsolete and thus the greatest single source of byproduct salt cake will disappear. Also viscose rayon is meeting strong competition from nylon and other synthetic fibers and production of byproduct salt cake from this source may do little more than remain at the present level. These factors together with increasing demand for sodium sulfate point to increased production from natural sources. In 1958, 36 pct of the total United States production was derived from natural sources and in addition 97,000 short tons was imported so that over 40 pct of the total consumption was supplied by natural sources whereas in 1953 the proportion was only 24 pct. The rapid growth in production is shown in Table 1. Principal Sodium Sulfate Minerals There are many minerals in which sodium sulfate is a constituent but those of commercial importance at the present time, and consisting wholly of sodium sulfate in either the hydrous or anhydrous states, are mirabilite and thenardite. Minerals of potential importance but consisting in part of compounds other than sodium sulfate are glauberite in which sodium sulfate is combined with calcium sulfate, and blödite in which sodium sulfate is combined with magnesium sulfate. Mirabilite (Na2SO4.10H2O) the decahydrate, consists of 24.8 pct SO3, 19.3 pct Na2O, and 55.9 pct H20. It is a colorless to opaque, soft, water-soluble mineral with a slightly bitter taste. This paper discusses the behaviour of large-span tunnels and caverns in hard rock in a major underground storage project. In-situ stresses were measured using hydraulic fracturing during site investigation and 3-D overcoring during construction, with both showing a horizontal stress ratio of 2-3 times the vertical stress. Rock reinforcement design was based on the Q-system combined with numerical modelling for special design cases. Tunnel design and performance were checked and monitored by in-situ instrumentation during rock excavation, including measurements of deformation, convergence, and load on rock bolts. Deformation measurements using borehole extensometers included one borehole drilled into the virgin rock before rock excavation, which provided a direct and very insightful comparison with the various deformation measurements made during rock excavation. These measurements coupled with numerical calculations have proven that the high horizontal stresses to be very favourable to the stability of the large openings.

I WISH to urge on this Committee the task of evaluating mining geology. -My motive is as follows: It, is a. duty of the Institute from time to5 time, to establish the social perspective of the professions grouped within it, not simply to promote their use, but to determine with engineering definiteness their true powers and functions. This becomes the delegated duty, therefore, of this committee in respect to geology. Be- cause my own subject is mining, I shall confine my remarks to mining geology. But I believe that the evaluation should be made to include all of that geology termed economic. The perspective for such evaluation is shown in the nature of the public support given to geology. The federal Geological Survey, the leading organization on the economic side, is actuated by the zeal of a small group of devoted professionals who consider its work valuable, ' It proceeds, however, on a starvation ration of appropriations, and that implies that neither the corporations, the voters nor the vote getters consider it important. Altogether, in' the public consciousness, geology is negligible. That, at the same moment, .the profession should act with full confidence, while everyone else should act' with opposite motives, is not fitting. For us, as a committee, to remain incurious regarding such a disparity of beliefs is quite impossible.

Having been appointed, on February 19th, 1890, a member of the Commission created by the Legislature of Pennsylvania for the purpose of investigating the " Waste of Coal Mining, with the View to the Utilizing of the Waste" (waste in this case referring specially to the small sizes of anthracite heretofore thrown away), my attention was naturally directed to the mash economical method of burning these small sizes.* Although I had been Familiar with the burning of anthracite for • many years, I found when I came to study the matter carefully that I was far from thoroughly understanding it, particularly with reference to the hurning of the smaller sizes, and that the literature of the subject, which was not very extensive, had more of a tendency to confuse than to enlighten me. I began therefore to investigate the subject so as to arrive if possible at some definite principles applicable to the question. With the aid of my assistant, Mr. John R. Wagner, I began at Drifton a series of experiments upon the burning of small anthracites. We first erected a small furnace with a grate 3 feet long and 2 feet wide, with which we experimented about two months. From the information thus acquired, we designed and built another furnace of about the same size, which gave us facilities for extending our investigations still further. After experimenting several months with the second furnace, we built a third one, which was much larger, having a grate area of about 68 square feet, which was exactly the size of the grate used in the boiler-plants of' Coxe Bros. &

The vibration response of a 30 in. diameter high-pressure (845 psi) natural gas pipeline to 11 coal mine blasts was measured. The X-52 steel pipeline was buried 7 ft. below the ground surface. Ground and pipeline motions in terms of velocities were recorded on the pipeline, in the ground adjacent to the pipeline, and near the ground surface directly above the pipeline. These data were used to estimate the maximum stresses and strains in the pipeline occurring during the blasts. Pipeline standoff distances varied from 264 ft. to 3720 ft. Two blast hole layouts and timing schemes were used. One represented highly confined blasts to limit movement of the shot overburden that generated high ground motions at the pipeline. The second represented patterns that provided greater relief and lower the ground velocities at the pipeline.

ALTHOUGH zone melting has found favor in recent years because of its convenience and its faster rate of production of single crystals, the older technique of strain annealing still has a number of advantages. It has been reported1 that the lattice of a crystal prepared in this manner has fewer defects than one grown from the melt and, of course, the control of the external geometry is easier. Also, the diameter of the crystal which can be grown by zone melting has a theoretical limit determined by the surface tension, thermal conductivity, and specific gravity of the material, while the size of that which can be grown in the solid state is limited only by practical considerations. In a program for the study of the structure-sensitive properties of niobium and its alloys it was desirable, for ease of handling, to have available single crystals of large diameter. This requirement dictated the choice of the strain-anneal technique. Induction heating was chosen in the present work in preference to other methods because of its deep penetration of large-diameter sections. A five-turn coil, powered by a motor generator operating at 10,000 cps, is contained in a vacuum chamber. The work is lowered through the coil for both the recrystallization and the crystal-growth steps. Starting with electron-beam melted material, the bars are cold-swaged, recrystallized, strained in a tensile machine, and then subjected to the growth step. Single crystals have been grown under the following conditions: Reduction in area during swaging— 79 to 99 pct, recrystallization temperature—1500o to 1667°C at the rate of 1.25 in. per hr, strain—1.0 to 2.5 pct, growth temperature—1600o to 2400°C at rates from 0.15 to 1.25 in. per hr. Starting grain sizes achieved after the recrystallization step varied from 0.6 to 1.55 mm. The starting grain size was found to be critical; if it is too fine and has any residual cold work, as shown by the presence of a fiberlike texture, a single crystal cannot be grown. Using this technique niobium single crystals have been grown from 0.250 in. diameter and 12 in. long to 1.00 in. diameter and 5 in. long as shown in Fig. 1. The 1-in. crystal is the largest to be reported for a refractory metal as compared to 0.500 in. for molybdenum grown by zone melting.2 As with zone melting, control of orientation is possible by the use of special procedures. Other investigators, see for example Williamson and Smallman,3 have reported that orientation control may be achieved by a bending technique. In the present work the strained rod is partially lowered through the coil to start the growth of the crystal. Then it is removed and bent at a point ahead of the interface between the single and polycrystalline portions. Finally, it is returned to the chamber and growth is continued "around the corner". The amount of bending which can be imparted to the rod is limited by coil geometry which up to now has been 10 deg. However, by repeating the bending and growing operations it should be possible to attain any desired orientation. The perfection of these single-crystal specimens as a function of process variables is being measured by X-ray and metallographic techniques and the results will be reported in a forthcoming paper. It read as follows: "The most vital need of the management is for more brains. The logical course for an engineer ;in charge of an industrial organization is, therefore, to direct whatever forces may be at his command toward the development, training and guiding of-all the brains in his organization. This is easier said than done, for it involves the carrying on toward two objectives, the maximum of productive work and the development of the individuals, who perform it;" and the last sentence of the paper; "Industry has no greater asset than an intelligent workman." The United States of America, at the outbreak of the present war, had the best equipment of any nation in the world. That statement holds not only for our -shops and our transportation systems and our stores and our farms and our homes, but it holds generally.. There was no other nation in. the world that had so good equipment as the United States. There was no other nation in the world that could be called progressive that has such poorly trained workers as the United States. Even Norway, Denmark, Sweden and New Zealand ranked ahead of us. Now that is the, problem, generally speaking, and there was recognition of that fact, a growing recognition which-took form, and one of its forms was what we call the corporation school. Now obviously a corporation has no particular educational functions, but as is said in the closing sentence of Mr. Stanford's paper, or as is implied, an industrial institution is, after all, the reflection of the aggregate of the efficiency of the individuals who compose that organization. There is no way of getting away from that. If your individuals, from your president down, are efficient, if your individual has developed his brains, if he is a trained man, you have got an efficient organization, and if you haven't that condition, you have got weaknesses and your organization is no stronger than those weaknesses. I maintain that the same thing holds for a nation; .a nation is as efficient as the collective efficiency of the individuals who compose the nation, and no more so.

Reactions of metallic iron were studied in several different aqueous solution systems: water, medium salt solution used for the growth of T ferrooxidans, ferric iron solution and solution containing T ferrooxidans. Each system was studied under abiotic and biotic conditions in the presence of T ferrooxidans and as a function of pH, particle size of iron powder, temperature, ferrous and ferric iron concentrations. It was found that metallic iron reacts with water differently than does with ferric iron in water. Surprisingly, T ferrooxidans were non-functional in the dissolution of metallic iron. Also, the reactions of metallic iron with pure water were indistinguishable from the reactions with water containing medium salts for bacterial growth. The reactions with ferric iron were also independent of medium culture compounds. The mechanisms of metallic iron reactions with ferric ions are different from the mechanisms of metallic iron reactions with water.

Take regulations, for instance. Complying with regulatory requirements is just part of the job for those involved with explosives. But in recent years, it seems as if new or revised regulations in areas such as hazardous materials training, drug and alcohol testing, security issues, or local licensing/permitting standards are changing the way we operate on a recurring basis. Simply keeping track of all of these regulations has become a full-time job.

"In previous work by the authors, it was established that additions of 0.2 at.% Ru to an Fe-40 at.% Al alloy improved the corrosion and oxidation resistance of the alloy. The alloy was produced by mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering and the work showed that nonequilibrium processing was able to significantly refine the grain size of the material. The sintered material had a higher hardness than the as-cast material and the change in grain size did not significantly affect the oxidation and corrosion. In the present research, the mechanically alloyed powder was coated onto a mild steel substrate using cold-spray coating at a gas pressure of 10 bar and a temperature of 500°C. The coatings were found to be 5–10 um thick, although thicknesses of up to 30 um were observed. The coated materials were subjected to oxidation and corrosion tests to determine the effectiveness of the coating in increasing the oxidation and corrosion resistance of mild steel. This was done to determine the effectiveness of cold-spray coating as a technique to coat these mechanically alloyed powders. IntroductionPrevious work conducted by Mintek (Couperthwaite et al., 2013, 2015) investigated the effect of precious metal additions on the structure, oxidation and corrosion properties of an Fe-40 at.% Al (Fe- Al) alloy. Initial work determined that additions of more than 0.5 at.% precious metal did not improve the oxidation and corrosion properties of the materials and in some cases even decreased the resistance to corrosion. Further work identified Pt and Ru as beneficial additions to the FeAl alloy. Four alloys were then produced by mechanical alloying and sintering (FeAl–0.2 at.% Pd, FeAl–0.2 at.% Ru, FeAl–0.5 at.% Ag, FeAl–0.5 at.% Pt). These alloys were all successfully produced by melting and casting and mechanical alloying sintering and it was found that the nonequilibrium processing greatly decreased the grain size of the materials compared to the ascast materials. It was found that the additions of Ru and Pt were still the most beneficial to the oxidation and corrosion properties, with Ru being considered the most beneficial."
