An assessment of U.S. western hard-rock miners? noise exposures was conducted as part of a multi-year National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) survey of noise exposures in each sector of the mining industry. Noise from selected mining equipment and operator noise exposures were measured, analyzed, and tabulated for dissemination to the participating sites and are being used to direct NIOSH research and interventions to address the greatest noise hazards. Eighty-two noise dosimeter measurements were obtained, along with time-motion studies as the miners operated hard-rock mining machines. Ninety-six percent of the operators had daily noise doses that exceeded the Mine Safety and Health Administration?s permissible exposure level. The average gold miner dosages while operating the following equipment were: haul trucks - 261%, load-haul-dumps (LHDs) - 235%, single boom drills - 221%, bolters - 214%, and dual boom drills - 163%. The worst exposure level was a silver miner with a daily dose of 873%. Time-motion data showed that this miner?s exposure accumulated most rapidly while operating a jack-leg drill. These results will be used to help prioritize noise control development by NIOSH and other partners. Background: Frictional ignitions continue to be a problem facing the U.S. underground coal mining industry. Many methane igni-tions are associated with the impact of mining machine cutter bits on quartzitic material (e.g., sandstone) during the coal-cutting process. Most ignitions result in small methane-air fireballs often only a few feet in size and limited to the cutter head location. However, under certain conditions, frictional ignitions can lead to larger methane explosions and/or fires with the potential for causing serious injury or death to the mining machine operator and other nearby miners. The requirements for a frictional ignition are a flammable volume of methane-air and an ignition source. This source is usually the hot streak caused by the frictional impact of the mining bit on hard rock, and the frequency of occurrence increases with increased bit wear. Another possible ignition source is the fric-tional impact of rock on rock during a roof fall.

"The maintenance strategies in the mining industry are changing from operative and periodic inspection strategies to a condition-based, predictive maintenance strategy centred in vibration analysis plus complementary techniques. Condition monitoring can also help to improve availability by being able to pinpoint and diagnose problems on operating machinery at an early stage. This reduces unscheduled downtime and production losses.However, in mining, for shovels operating in transient modes, with variable load and/or speed, the FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) standard approach is not directly applicable for analysis. This work illustrates how spectral order analysis and new transforms, called time-frequency transforms (TFT), allow us to monitor the shovel when it is working. Some practical examples showing the application of these analysis techniques to occasional vibrations measured on hoist and crowd transmission of a shovel are also presented. It is shown that at present, it is possible to carry out the vibration monitoring in the mining shovel while it is working, therefore avoiding the high cost of a loss of production which can occurr in traditional monitoring, where the measurement is taken while the shovel is out of production."

The liquid crystal display (LCD) are currently known by its vast application in electro ? electronic devices, amongst them can be detached the devices of TV, laptops, electronic date, calculators and even though the mobile telephones (mobiles). The mobiles are changed more frequent of the TV for example, this happens due to the technology advance. With the constantly mobile exchange, the batteries, printed circuit board and liquid crystal display accumulation its become an environmental problem. To minimize the environmental impacts caused by mobile telephones residues are considered the segregation process of the LCDs main components, to goal to recover the recycle material. This process involves the use of treatment ore techniques with disc, hammers and balls mills. The process with best efficiency (about 98%) of LCD glass release was the hammers mill. The glass recovered can be used in the glass recycling and the sand substitution in the production of concrete blocks.

Jaguar Nickel Inc. is developing the Sechol Nickel-Cobalt Laterite Project in Guatemala, Central America. Recognizing the potential advantages offered by chloride brine chemistry, Jaguar, at the facilities of Process Research ORTECH Inc, Mississauga, has developed an Atmospheric Chloride Leaching Process using a mixed chloride lixiviant to recover the nickel and cobalt, whilst leaving the majority of the iron and magnesium in the leach residue. Subsequent solution purification and mixed nickel/cobalt hydroxide product recovery is by standard precipitation methods, using recycled caustic magnesia, with a final stage of pyrohydrolysis of a portion of the concentrated magnesium chloride brine for recycling both the caustic magnesia and chloride lixiviant. The flowsheet that has been developed also offers opportunities for by-product recovery and efficient, environmentally clean process effluent management. The paper discusses some of the early leaching results in the context of strong chloride brine chemistry, with emphasis on how the controlling of water activity, hydrogen ion activity and chloride concentration permits the selective leaching of nickel and cobalt from an iron-magnesium matrix. The extent to which man's activities are influencing the earth's climate is subject to considerable debate. Internationally however, this debate has been put aside somewhat by the Kyoto Protocol. This international agreement is the political response to the threat of Global warming, predicated on the precautionary principle.NZ is seeking to be a leader in the Kyoto Protocol. Given our unique GHG emission profile and the structure of our economy, and the major uncertainties in both the science of climate change and the Kyoto Protocol itself, this desire to lead is absolutely inappropriate in this instance. We face a different, and often more severe, set of challenges in an economy that prices C emissions than virtually all of our trading partners. Unfortunately, these differences have not been reflected in climate change policy development to date. This represents a major threat to New Zealand's economy, wealth and jobs, particularly in the sectors that have been the core drivers of our economy over the last 20 years or so - agriculture, energy, primary processing. We do not, and should not, seek to avoid the issue but we must protect our economy and move with or follow our trading partners and competitors, not lead them.

Traditionally, quality control of iron sinter has relied on time-consuming wet chemistry. However, the mineralogical composition that defines the physical properties, such as strength or reducibility, is not monitored.X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis in combination with Rietveld quantification and statistical data evaluation using partial least squares regression (PLSR) has been successfully trialled to determine the mineralogical composition and process parameters such as the FeO (Fe2+) content and basicity of iron sinter within an analysis time of less than eight minutes per sample. The results were compared with wet chemistry data.PLSR does not require pure phases, crystal structures or complex modelling of peak shapes. The analysis is therefore easy to set up and ideal if only one property needs to be analysed. PLSR results show an accuracy for the FeO content of ±0.3 per cent for the samples analysed in this case study.Both the PLSR and Rietveld methods take the full XRD pattern into account and can be simultaneously applied on the same measurement. PLSR was found to be the more robust method if only FeO and basicity results are required. The Rietveld method helps to predict other parameters, such as the compression strength of the sinter, by monitoring all existing phases (eg larnite C2S or silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminium phases).CITATION:König, U and Norberg, N, 2015. Things are going well in the mining and construction industries world-wide. So good are things that from April 23 to 29 more than 500,000 visitors involved in those two industries attended the bauma 2007 Trade Show in Munich, Germany. Bauma is an international trade fair for construction and mining equipment that took place at the New Munich Trade Fair Center. It is hosted by Munich once every three years. This year was the most successful bauma ever and further strengthened the shows position as the world leader in the field.

Many sampling standards arrive at a value for the prescribed sample mass by assuming a specific relation between the sample mass and the relative standard deviation of the fundamental error and assigning a value to the tolerated coefficient of variation. In order to obtain an equation that provides a relation between the minimum sample mass and the particle properties, many different models for the drawing of a sample have been developed. Here, a model for the drawing of a sample is proposed which can be considered to be a generalisation of the model used in GyÆs sampling theory. Using simulations, it is illustrated that the generalised model can lead to a better correspondence with actual sampling processes.

A very high-grade calcite deposit located in northern Norway consists of CaCO3 ore with minor silicate and sulphide impurities. Cationic (Tallow-1,3-diaminopropane, Duomeen T) collector has been used in the purification of calcite by flotation with an aim of achieving calcite concentrate for its use in value-added products in a variety of industries. The feasibility of sulphide flotation from calcite by this cationic collector has been initially judged from Hallimond flotation and zeta potential on pure mineral systems and the results illustrate the removal of sulphide from calcite ore at neutral pH region. The adsorption mechanism of diamine on both the sulphide minerals was found to be the same by zeta potential studies. The variations in zeta potential are in good agreement with the adsorption of diamine molecular and ionic species as a function of pH. FTIR studies also showed the adsorption of diamine species in agreement with the zeta potential and Hallimond flotation results. Furthermore, the removal of sulphide impurities with selective flotation by diamine collector was performed in bench-scale flotation with the calcite ore and the results indeed showed that the calcite concentrate could meet the quality requirements for its use in the paper industry for coating and filler purposes.

Lime-enhanced carbothermic reduction may provide an alternative process for treating low grade chalcopyrite concentrates. To date, most research on lime-enhanced reduction has been on pure, synthetic sulfides. In this study, preliminary experiments were carried out on natural chalcopyrite using a thermal analysis system to assess the rate and extent of reaction at several temperatures and identify the major solid and gaseous reaction products. Calculations were performed to establish the thermodynamic limits of the reactions in the temperature range of interest in order to identify the potential conditions for processing chalcopyrite concentrate. The study found that finely ground chalcopyrite can be reduced carbothermically in the presence of lime at moderate temperatures and in a reasonable time to form metallic copper, with the sulphur reporting virtually entirely to calcium sulfide. At temperatures below about 750?770ºC calcium ferrite is the stable form of iron whereas at higher temperatures metallic iron is stable. Further work is required to demonstrate the reaction on a scale to obtain sufficient sample for evaluation of subsequent processing steps to remove the gangue material and iron products from the copper.

Gold ores containing high levels of cyanide-leachable copper minerals, such as covellite, chalcocite, bornite, malachite, azurite, and cuprite have traditionally been difficult to treat economically. A novel hydrometallurgical process for efficient treatment of cyanidation effluents obtained by leaching high copper gold ores (or concentrates) based on the use of Cherokee Chemical organo-sulfur reagents (OSR-A, OSR-B and OSR-C) is described. The process may be modified to selectively precipitate silver, or completely recover silver, copper and zinc, as well as regenerate significant amounts of cyanide. For example, data obtained demonstrate that 100 % of silver and zinc, and 98 % of copper were removed from the solution, while 80 % of cyanide was recovered. The treated barren solutions exhibit enhanced gold and silver leaching kinetics compared to the untreated controls.

This report presents an economic mineral assessment and Inventory of mines and prospects In the approximately 176,000-acre Patagonia Mountains-Canelo Hills Unit of Coronado National Forest. Deposits or areas most likely to experience future development are characterized in terms of their economics, based on data acquired by the author from a variety of sources, and supplemented by USBM field data collected by other workers in 1990 and 1991. Numerous mine maps, rock-chip sample assays, and detailed descriptions of mine and prospect sites are in this report and appendixes. Heavy but sporadic mining, mainly between the 1850's and 1950's was nearly all confined to the Patagonia Mountains. High-grade sulfide veins, replacements, and skarn deposits accounted for most of the production, which included large quantities of zinc, lead, copper, and silver, and considerable quantities of gold. Small Quantities of molybdenum, manganese, tungsten, and placer gold have been mined. Most of the traditionally mined metalliferous sites will not see future activity due to the low tonnages present and removal of most high-grade rock. Possible future development areas include copper porphyries and breccia pipes; most are too deeply buried for current development. Localities where similar deposits may be concealed are identified.

Heap and valley leach operations rely on solution collection piping placed within the heap to enhance both solution recovery and to assist overall solution management. The most common piping used in leaching operations is solid or perforated High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipe and Corrugated Polyethylene pipe (CPE). These pipes are widely used because of their low cost, ease of installation, durability, and flexibility. The typical recommended maximum design depth of burial for HDPE and CPE pipes is on the order of 30 meters (100 feet). However, ore heap heights at many facilities exceed 30 meters and some are now approaching 180 meters (600 feet) in height. At very high ore heap heights, the stability and performance of HDPE and CPE pipes becomes a critical issue for leaching facility design and operation. Failure of solution collection piping can lead to poor solution recovery, high hydraulic heads on the liner system, and in some cases, unstable ore slopes due to high solution pressures near slopes. This paper presents a review of methods that have traditionally been used to evaluate pipe stability under high normal loads. A common shortcoming of these methods is the inability to account for beneficial effects of ore arching around pipes and the time-dependent creep (stress relief) behavior of polyethylene (PE) materials. A new analytical approach is developed and presented which includes the effects of ore arching around pipes and creep of PE materials. The results of the new approach show that PE pipes will deform under high heap loads, but can remain stable and functional. Pipe stability is shown to be dependent on the type of pipe backfill and initial backfill compaction. The new approach represents a useful tool for designing applications for PE pipe under high normal loads.

In this paper the system of an operative expert estimation of innovative policy of mining enterprise technological development on sustainable development principles, created in the laboratory of economic analysis, planning and management of Mining Institute after D A Kunayev is represented. It is based on application of technology of satellite navigation and global positioning system (GPS). It allows to estimate the geotechnological complex functioning efficiency in the automated mode and on the basis of the obtained results to develop a complex of management measures on the competitiveness increase, realised by means of the automated corporative management system of geotechnological complex. The estimation of complex competitiveness is carried out on such basic aspects, as: technical, technological, organisational, ecological and economic as all of it give certain expenses and influence on complex overall performance. The major difference of the given approach is its realisation within the limits of the automated corporative management system of geotechnological complexes. It is based the fact that data of monitoring of complex's work will provide a sustainable development of geotechnological complex of mining enterprise.

This paper describes a comparison of the fatigue failure responses of older versus younger lumbar spine cadaver motion segment specimens. These specimens were repeatedly subjected to loads simulating those experienced by the spine in lifting a 9 kg load in different torso flexion postures (0, 22.5, and 45 degrees of flexion). An older sample of 36 motion segments (average age 81 years + 8 SD) is compared with a younger sample of 18 motion segments (average age: 47 years + 9 SD) with respect to the number of cycles to failure and results of survival analyses evaluating the effects of flexion and bone mineral content with and without the younger data set. Compared to the older sample of spines, the younger sample exhibited many more cycles to fatigue failure in all the torso flexion conditions (10020 versus 8267 average cycles to failure in 0 degrees flexion, 7124 versus 3262 in 22.5 degrees flexion, and 3229 versus 263 cycles to failure in 45 degrees flexion). The increased cycles to failure in young specimens is likely due to the increased bone mineral content (BMC) in younger motion segments (30.7 g + 11.1 g per motion segment versus 27.8 + 9.4 g). Cox regression analyses modeling both flexion effects and BMC indicate that betas are similar when just older spines are modeled and when younger specimens are included in the analysis. Betas for survival analysis models with and without younger specimens generally show little change for flexion (2.716 versus 2.756 for 22.5 degrees [0 degrees referent], 3.926 versus 3.380 for 45 degrees [0 degrees referent]). Bone mineral content shows a similar protective effect in both models (Betas: -0.127 versus -0.087). Overall, comparison of the models indicate that risk ratios are similar for 22.5 degrees flexion, slightly increased for 45 degrees flexion and slightly more protective influence predicted for BMC in the combined sample versus the older sample alone.

In accordance with the 57th section of the Explosives Act, 1875, the following report on the working of the Act during the year ending December 31, 1903, is submitted. There have been no modifications of the law during the year. No complaint is made of any falling off in the general condition of factories and magazines, and in one instance only during the year have legal proceedings been taken for any irregularity. The occupiers of factories and magazines have invariably shown perfect readiness to remedy any defects, and the managers have themselves in many instances introduced improvements tending towards greater safety. The number of deaths (5) from accidents by fire or explosion in the manufacture of explosives is below the average for the decade (6•4). Looking to the large number of persons employed in this trade, the number of deaths is not excessive and will compare favorably with the death-rate in other dangerous trades. Notwithstanding the large increase in the manufacture of explosives, the average number of deaths has greatly decreased since the passing of the Explosives Act, whereas the number of fatal accidents with explosives under conditions to which the Act does not apply appears to increase with the extension of trade.

With the current economic situation, the demand for nickel and other base metals has fallen significantly. More than 440 kt/yr world nickel capacity has been taken out of production within the last year, or more than 25% of the total [1]. This situation is similar to that at the end of 1970?s and it will take a number of years for the demand to recover to the levels before the economic downturn. In the meantime, the challenges facing the industry have increased due to diminishing ore grades, more inaccessible and complex deposits, mounting capital and operating costs and the various external pressures which include socio-economic, environmental, and energy challenges. All industries will be faced with paying the ?total ownership costs? in the future. This will only increase the burden on the industry. How to cope with this in what Thomas Friedman calls the ?Energy-Climate Era? [2] will be the most pressing challenge for the next generation of metallurgists and managers. It will force us to take a broader view of the problems and the solutions beyond mere technical. The metallurgists, engineers and project managers will have to look at the overall projects and their objectives in designing the solutions, requiring a top-down strategic approach.
