From the standpoint of quality, surface cracks normally pose more of a problem than internal cracks. Hypo-peritectic (HP) steel grades are well known for their proneness to surface longitudinal cracking (SLC) during continuous casting. This study analyzed the influences of chemical composition, technique parameter and secondary cooling on the surface longitudinal cracks. Based on the optimized the first and secondary cooling zone water distribution in the process of continuous casting, low cooling water distribution at solidification initial stages and uniform cooling at secondary cooling zone were suggested, which can be used to effectively control the surface longitudinal cracks.

This paper reviews rehabilitation, closure, and post-closure management of the Tui, Golden Cross, and Martha Mines, all of which are located in the Waikato Region of New Zealand. There was no requirement for rehabilitation of the Tui mine, which was abandoned in 1973. There was a requirement to rehabilitate the Golden Cross mine. Mining at that site ceased in 1997, and rehabilitation is now well advanced. When first approved, there were some requirements for rehabilitation of the Martha Mine, but when reconsented in 1998, those were extended, and in addition a requirement for post-closure management was included. As a result, a Trust, funded by the mining company, has been established to take long-term responsibility for the site following completion of closure. The different rehabilitation/closure requirements at each of these sites illustrates that we have learnt something from the experiences of the past.

Different types of lump iron ore-bearing particles were investigated in terms of their raw material properties depending on their behaviour during reduction. To predict the reduction behaviour different types of lump iron ore and pellet brands were characterised by their mineral abundance, texture and pore size. The image processing software VisuMet was developed to semi-automate the evaluation of photomicrographs from polished sections of lumpy iron particles. The results were compared to the standard reducibility test after ISO 4695. The evaluation of lump iron ores is based on the simulation of the transformation of the different iron minerals due to their sequence of reducibility. The progress of the reduction front is simulated and the result is a degradation curve. Pellets were also investigated due to their different pore size distribution. The results indicate that the pore size influences the reducibility in addition to mineral abundance. The evaluation with VisuMet of the lump iron ore and pellet samples correlates with the reducibility provided by the ISO 4695 test. The determination of the mineral abundance by VisuMet is comparable to common point counting with a correlation coefficient of 99.67 per cent.CITATION:Kain-Bückner, B and Mali, H, 2017. "In 2010, closure of the Kidd metallurgical plants along with structural changes to the historical ratios of payable metals led to a review of the operating targets at the Kidd concentrator. Previous operating data indicated that there was potential for significant revenue improvements by lowering the copper concentrate grade. An extended plant trial was carried out in 2011 to quantify the revenue impact of lowering the copper concentrate grade from 27% to 25% Cu, as well as identifying the lower practical grade limit. Analysis of plant trial results indicated that the process change increased net concentrate revenue by $2 M to $3 M per year at current metal prices. Increased revenue was primarily associated with higher silver recovery to the copper concentrate while the marginally improved copper recovery was essentially offset by increased zinc losses and concentrate treatment and freight charges.Details of the plant test work results are discussed in this paper along with the financial analysis of the revenue improvements. Key areas covered are major revenue components of the concentrate contracts, validation of revenue improvements through plant testing and sensitivity of the improvements to market and plant variables.INTRODUCTIONThe Xstrata Copper Kidd concentrator commenced operations in 1966 treating ore from the nearby Kidd volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit in Timmins, Ontario (Thompson, Amsden, & Chapman, 1978). Over the years, up to four separate grinding-flotation divisions were in operation with throughput rates peaking at 4.5 million tonnes per year of ore in the mid 1980’s (Kelebek & Francis, 1998). As the mine production decreased and grinding throughput increased operations were gradually cut back and since 1998 two grinding-flotation divisions have been in operation treating Kidd mine ore. One of the idled divisions has been intermittently used for custom milling operations, most recently the Ni/Cu Montcalm deposit, which was milled from 2004 to 2009. Current budget throughput rates, limited by mine production, are 2.4 million tonnes per year of ore grading 1.7% Cu, 4.3% Zn and 55 g/mt Ag. Concentrate production rates are 150,000 tonnes per year of copper concentrate and 155,000 tonnes per year of zinc concentrate. The Kidd mine is the deepest base metal mine in the world with mining operations down to 9600 ft.In 2010 the copper and zinc plants at the Kidd metallurgical site, which previously treated the concentrate production from the Kidd concentrator, ceased operation due to a variety of economic and market factors. Following the metallurgical plant closures the Kidd concentrator products were shipped off site for treatment. The majority of the copper concentrate is now processed at the Xstrata Copper Horne smelter in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec with the majority of the zinc concentrate processed at Canadian Electrolytic Zinc Ltd. in Valleyfield, Quebec."

"Les Mines Selbaie have been producing copper and zinc concentrates from the A-1 ore zone since 1986. This paper reviews major developments in flotation practice over that period. Firstly, ore blending strategies for Selbaie's non-homogeneous polymetallic ore are discussed. The evolution of reagent use is then reviewed, focussing on copper collector trials. A description of Selbaie's flotation columns follows. The shear behaviour of reinforced rock joints is investigated for the bolt-grout-rock interaction and for failure mechanism. The effectiveness of the bolt application under lateral and axial loading conditions within surrounding materials is investigated in different medium strength. Double shearing testing of bolts were studied in concrete blocks of 20, 40, 50 and 100 MPa strengths, subjected to different pretension loads of 0, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 80 KN respectively. The experimental study was complemented with three-dimensional numerical analysis. Parameters examined include: shear resistance, shear displacement, induced strains and stresses during bolt bending process and its ultimate failure across the sheared joint planes. The conclusions drawn from the study were; the level of bolt resistance to shearing was influenced by the bolt profile configuration, the strength of the rock or medium influenced the level of load generated on the bolt, and the increase in bolt pretension has contributed to the increased shearing load of the bolted medium.

In late 1994, EPA and OSM acknowledged that efforts by any one agency or by the many different agencies to remedy the water quality impacts of decades of contamination from abandoned coal mine lands in Appalachia would not be successful if their disjointed efforts were not unified and if the local watershed organizations were not included. The result of the collaboration between EPA and OSM was the creation of a statement of mutual intent which was a pledge by government agencies, watershed organizations, and the industry to restore watersheds degraded by acid mine drainage from abandoned coal. The presenter will describe the evolution of this pledge from a paper promise to on-the-ground remediation projects.

Mine rehabilitation is a sustainability issue that has been revisited ad infinitum; however, the persistent lack of demonstrated on-the-ground performance and an increasingly intractable rehabilitation liability in Queensland continue to erode the credibility of the mining industry and regulatory bodies. For at least ten years the need to change the current, process-based approach to rehabilitation to an outcomes-based approach has been apparent. The ISO 14001 series temporarily diverted attention from this important point, however it would appear the limitations of an ISO 14001 approach are now more widely accepted. It is proposed that a successful outcomes-based approach cannot be achieved without meaningful community engagement. The apparently intractable nature of the rehabilitation issue will continue to generate conflict and criticism unless all stakeholders are encouraged to participate in the process of developing robust and practical outcomes for rehabilitation. Sharing the responsibility will ensure the best possible outcome. It is important to recognise the valuable resources inherent in community groups, many of whose committed volunteers have considerable expertise in relevant areas. Community groups should not be seen as adversaries but as allies in the process of solving problems that affect the wider community. Several projects that can be seen as test cases for the engagement of stakeholders exist, and in this paper the process of achieving multiple stakeholder engagement in the context of Environmentally Sustainable Development is discussed.

"A methodology was developed in the mid-1980’s to predict plant performance from standard laboratory flotation tests. The technique is based on a simple, empirical kinetics model, and is tailored for use by the practical metallurgist.To date the performance of more than 20 flotation plants has been predicted, including copper, lead, zinc, phosphate, pyrite, graphite, cassiterite, platinum, nickel and various slags. The method has successfully been used to predict and size four flotation plants directly from bench-scale laboratory flotation testwork. All have since been commissioned, and have performed as predicted.The technique has now received broad acceptance within the South African mining industry, for example in the last year alone it has been used to drive flowsheet development for at least seven new plants. It is also being used to assist in the optimisation of existing operating plants.The methodology is described in this paper and verification of the methodology is presented using case studies of porphyry, polymetallic and PGM operations.INTRODUCTIONThere is considerable interest these days in the use of modelling to simulate flotation circuits, for process design and plant optimisation purposes. Although these models are proving to be useful tools for plant design and optimisation, their complexity can make them cumbersome – expensive to use and difficult for metallurgists to visualise and mentally absorb, without a background in each specific technique. In “SUPASIM” no attempt is made to measure flotation fundamentals, rather to use empirical relationships between laboratory flotation kinetics and plant performance – relationships that hold up well to validation exercises as will be demonstrated later in this paper. Although not designed to be as comprehensive as other models, “SUPASIM” is easily understood by the operating metallurgist and can be quickly and easily applied."

Organo-sulphur-based collectors (eg xanthates, dithiocarbamates and dithiophosphates) are widely used in the flotation of sulphide minerals. Xanthates (ROC(=S)Sû), for example, adsorb strongly at sulphide mineral surfaces, in a reaction that is electrochemically coupled with the reduction of dissolved oxygen. One of the oxygen reduction products, hydrogen peroxide, reacts directly with dissolved xanthate, leading to its oxidative decomposition. Experimental work has been conducted, using ethyl xanthate, to understand the molecular mechanism by which hydrogen peroxide reacts with xanthates. A number of degradation products have been identified, some of which have not been reported previously. This oxidative decomposition reaction pathway is discussed in the broader context of xanthate decomposition in flotation systems. One of the identified ethyl xanthate decomposition products, ethyl perxanthate (ROC(=S)SOû), has been observed in the process water of a number of mineral processing operations. The interaction of this molecule with goethite (α-FeOOH) particles, typical of that found in tailings dams, has been studied in more detail using attenuated total reflectance (ATR)-FTIR. The ethyl perxanthate molecule has been found to coordinate to iron (FeIII) at the goethite surface, and undergo a surface-catalysed decomposition process. In the presence of both PbII and goethite, a ternary surface complex is formed, where ethyl perxanthate is coordinated directly to surface adsorbed PbII atoms. The results obtained give some insight into the environmental fate of ethyl xanthate in tailings streams, and a basis on which to consider the environmental importance of such species in tailings dams. Strategies for the destruction of residual xanthate levels in waste water streams are discussed in terms of the likely reaction products.

At present the source of virgin iron for steel produced in New Zealand is titanomagnetite extracted from titaniferous beachsands. Some of these beachsand deposits contain extractable quantities of ilmenite as well as titanomagnetite and both minerals represent challenging sources of vanadium and titanium products in addition to iron. This study looks at some theoretical aspects of smelting these ores directly with coal rather than with electric power, and takes into consideration the properties of the raw materials, the thermodynamics of possible process routes and the background of the economics involved.

Les haldes à stériles contenant des minéraux sulfureux réactifs constituent un milieu favorable à la production du drainage minier acide (DMA). Au sein de ces haldes, les processus physiques, géochimiques et biologiques qui mènent à la production du DMA sont nombreux et complexes. Un des aspects critiques qui affecte la génération de DMA est la distribution et le mouvement de l?eau dans les roches stériles. La modélisation numérique est un outil qui permet de comprendre, pour éventuellement contrôler, les mouvements de l?eau (et donc réduire la production du DMA) dans les haldes pendant la période d?exploitation de la mine et à sa fermeture. Plusieurs simulations numériques des écoulements non saturés dans des haldes ont été effectuées. Pour ces simulations, on a considéré divers types de matériaux, diverses conditions atmosphériques et diverses configurations géométriques. Les simulations réalisées montrent que l?on peut contrôler les mouvements de l?eau en introduisant des couches de matériaux fins intercalées dans les haldes formées de matériaux grossiers. Des couches horizontales ne sont cependant pas appropriées puisqu?elles peuvent, dans certains cas, favoriser la création de zones humides susceptibles d?amplifier les effets du DMA. Une faible inclinaison des couches de matériaux fins vers l?extérieur permet de palier à ce problème. Les couches inclinées favorisent un drainage des haldes vers la périphérie. Ceci a pour effet de garder sèche une grande partie des stériles et de réduire, par le fait même, la production du DMA.

The US Bureau of Mines and the Santa Cruz Joint Venture (SCJV) are working on a production-scale, in situ copper recovery project in Arizona. The research is being conducted at the Santa Cruz site, located 11.2 km (7 miles) west of Casa Grande, AZ (Fig. 1). Santa Cruz is a 1.36-Gt (1.5 billion st) porphyry deposit averaging 0.6% Cu, of which 65% is oxidized, concealed beneath post-mineral alluvium at depths of 365-914 m (1500-3000 ft). The Bureau and the SCJV will evaluate in situ mining as a method for extracting copper from this previously unmined deposit. Research objectives of the Santa Cruz project are: - to demonstrate that an in situ research test can be operated in an environmentally acceptable manner ; and * to operate an in situ well pattern long enough to develop information on copper recovery and economic feasibility data. In situ mining of copper from undisturbed deposits has not been attempted commercially. There are several potential advantages with in situ mining: less exposure of miners to hazards, lower pital costs for the mine and plant and lower operating costs. In addition, there are no pits, dumps or tailings, which means less environmental impact.

It is common practice for underground mine plans to be created sequentially, where results from one planning process form the input data for another. While this is practical for manual methods, computerized optimization techniques should consider an integrated approach to creating the global mine plan. This is because optimizing an individual mine planning process, such as stope layouts, introduces a likelihood of increasing costs or decreasing revenues associated with other areas, such as production scheduling, as harmful decisions must be balanced. Considering the interaction and influence that individual underground mine planning processes have on each other during optimization will provide more profitable results than if these are ignored. Optimization techniques for stope layouts and production scheduling are reviewed. An integer programming model is proposed that allows for either integrated or isolated optimization. Both approaches are separately applied to a block model. The results demonstrate the model?s ability to produce optimal long-term sublevel stoping mine plans and the benefits of using an integrated approach. The coal pillars in room-and-pillar mining method are subjected to vertical stress due to overburden rock mass and horizontal stress relieve due to entries excavation around them. Some coal mining companies are applying rock bolts and steel straps to improve the pillar strength, consequently to reducing the pillar size and increasing coal recovery. This kind of approach deserves some discussion, whether it is pillar reinforcement or just rib support. The efficiency of pillar reinforcement (or rib support) is directly related to the initial load capacity of coal pillar, the type of excavation, and the width to high ratio of the pillar. The objective of this paper is to understand the mechanism of pillar reinforcement (or rib support) using rock bolts and steel straps on pillar ribs. Numerical simulation taking into account the relations listed above. The results showed that the increase of coal pillar strength is very short, and there is no influence on improvement of load capacity of pillar. However, the rib support avoids block falling, rib failure, and displacement, reducing the pillar failure propagation into the pillar center. Keywords: coal, pillar reinforcement, room and pillar.

High Pressure Water Jet Assisted Tunneling The high pressure water jet assisted tunneling project was conducted in a granite quarry near Skykomish, Washington, approximately 90 miles east of Seattle. A 7-ft diam tunnel boring machine was modified and equipped with high pressure water jets. The concept that tunneling rates can be improved by using high pressure water jets was validated, with an average increased advance rate of 50% to 60%. For some tests, the advance rate was more than doubled. A comprehensive economic analysis has shown that very significant savings are possible. At a 50% increase in advance rate, cost savings of 14% and 24% were projected for 10-ft and 20-ft diam tunnels respectively. These benefits were seen to be relatively insensitive to water jet equipment costs.
