Sodium silicate (water glass) is a modifier reagent widely used in flotation with the function of a depressant or dispersant. The interaction between sodium silicate and mineral surfaces is still not well understood. This investigation aimed to illuminate the sodium silicate action mechanism as a depressant in the flotation of the minerals quartz and calcite. The experiments were done with high-purity mineral samples in the particle size range below 147 µm. The microflotation tests in a modified Hallimond tube showed that, in all systems tested, the efficiency of sodium silicate increased with the concentration. At concentrations above 1,500 g/t, almost total depression (96% for calcite and 97% for quartz) was achieved. The variation of sodium silicate modulus did not alter the quartz flotation performance in the presence of amine (150 g/t). The most efficient depression pH range was observed between 5 and 8. Above pH 10, the depressant action of sodium silicate was negligible. The infrared spectra obtained at pH 7 after silicate contact showed the presence of the groups OH and Si-OH, both suggesting that the adsorption of the neutral species Si(OH)4, as well as siloxane groups (Si-O-Si), attributed to adsorption of polymeric species. Sharing electron pairs is the proposed adsorption mechanism between Si(OH)4 and polymeric species and the surface sites (Si-O on quartz and Ca-O on calcite). At pH 11, the electrostatic repulsion prevents the species adsorption, impairing the sodium silicate action.

The local cumulative distribution function (lcdf) of a selective mine unit (SMU) can be estimated by conditional simulations using the statistics derived from the sample points, generating multiple equally probable scenarios. Conditional simulations permit the evaluation of the lcdf at any support, taking into account the spatial variability, ie the variogram, and the two statistical moments, mean and variance, of the conditioning samples. The SMU ore losses and dilution depend on the mining method and mining equipment selectiveness that, in its turn, depends on the predicted block size. A new approach to predict ore loss and dilution was developed in this study. Monte Carlo simulation is used to randomly generate a grade value derived from the lcdf at the mining stage (Zs_mc(t)) in order to make a decision about the SMU destination, ie processing plant (ORE) or waste dump (WASTE). If Zs_mc(t) is lower or equal to the cut-off (Z_cut-off) the block is ORE and, conversely, if Zs_mc(t) is higher than the cut-off (Z_cut-off) the block is WASTE. Considering these binary destinations ORE/WASTE, at the mining time t, and combining each realisation of the simulated random function Zcs_i (X), there are four possibilities for each SMU simulated value: 1. the block was simulated as ore and is actually ore (OO), 2. the block was simulated as ore and is actually waste (OW),3. the block was simulated as waste and is actually ore (WO), and 4. the block was simulated as waste and is actually waste (WW).The dilution factor is given by possibility 3 (WO), while the ore loss factor is represented by possibility 2 (OW). These results comprise the classical classification and reconciliation plots used in the mining industry. The new procedure proposed in this paper is based on the use of all the equally probable simulations to define the ore loss and dilution factors. An application of this methodology was carried out at Vale's iron mine in Brazil. The grade of silica was simulated and 50 multiple equally probable 3D models were generated. The mean and the standard deviation of the ore tonnage (OO + WO) for the 50 realisations, was 233 Mt and 0.5 Mt, respectively. The mean grade increased for the diluted ore (OO + WO) as well as their respective coefficient of variation (CV). The CV increases from 62 per cent in the undiluted ore (OO), to 101 per cent in the ore, considering the dilution factor (OO + WO). The mean ore loss (OW) was 10 Mt and the waste tonnage dilution (WO) was 9 Mt.

MAGNESIUM alloys usually are superheated before casting in order to ensure fineness of grain. Superheat temperatures in common use range from 1600° to 1700°F while the casting temperature, which depends upon the mold shape, is usually 200° to 300°F lower. The process of superheating requires considerable time and seriously shortens the life of the iron pots used. Recently it has been reported' that if acetylene, carbon dioxide or natural gas is bubbled through molten electrolytic A.S.T.M. No. 4 alloy at 1400°F. for 5 min., grain refinement equivalent to that of superheating will take place. Addition of certain solids such as graphite or aluminum carbide accomplishes the same results.2 As will be shown in this paper, it is possible to achieve grain refinement in magnesium casting alloys at low temperatures by mechanical stirring of the molten metal for a short time. This process was developed in the course of research work, supervised by the War Metallurgy Committee under the "Restricted" Project NRC-550, for the Office of Production Research and Development of the War Production Board. This paper, based on that work, has been released for publication by the O.P.R.D. MATERIALS AND METHODS The alloys studied were the most common American sand-casting alloys designated as No. 4 and No. 17 by the American Society for Testing Materials. The magnesium used in these alloys was of both carbothermic3 and electrolytic4 origin. Chemical analyses supplied by the producers are shown in Table I. Each heat consisted of approximately 5 lb. of alloy melted in a Tercod crucible. It was refined by fluxing with Permanente No. 7* refining flux at 1300° to 1350°F. After cooling to 1200' to 1250°F., portions of approximately one pound each were ladled into iron crucibles contained in an electric furnace at about 1250°F. The molten metal was covered with Permanente No. 21† covering flux and then heated to the temperature to be investigated. Normally each of the four portions was given a different treatment. In a typical case one portion was stirred vigorously for 5 min., acetylene gas was passed through a second portion for 5 min., a third portion was superheated to 1600°F for 15 min., then cooled to casting temperature, and the fourth was held for 5 min. at the temperature of stirring or gassing without other treatment. Each portion was then cast into one-inch diameter cylinders in three "nonturbulent" molds of identical shape. One mold was made of cast iron and the other two of baked sand. O Disponibilidade do Desgaseificador a Vácuo RH se trata de uma ferramenta gerencial que realiza o mapeamento completo da produção no Desgaseificador durante vinte e quatro horas por dia, capaz de mapear o tempo do processo com base no tempo padrão do grau de aço e tempo de parada do equipamento, apontando todos os problemas que afetam a produção.

With the very effective depressant and collector developed by China Bluestar Lehigh Engineering Corp (hereinafter referred to as LEHIGH), satisfied results are obtained from laboratorial beneficiation tests on phosphate samples from Karatau, Republic of Kazakhstan by the direct flotation process. In this paper the effect of single factors on performance of flotation is studied and their applicable ranges are proposed. The final test results are described as follows: As the feed contains 23.20 % P2O5, and 3.96% MgO, a phosphate concentrate assaying 29.77%P2O5 and 1.54% MgO is produced, and the P2O5 recovery in concentrate is 88.28%. The beneficiation tests make it possible to simplify existing technology with fine grinding-desliming, followed by reverse & direct flotation system and consequently improve the concentrate grade and recovery for the future beneficiation plant

"The proposed reconstruction of I-75 downtown consists of widening an approximately 2.46 Km section of IR-75 through the northern section of downtown Dayton, OH, USA. Bridge B-13 is a 9-span continuos prestressed concrete I-beam, 319.0-meter (1,048-foot) long bridge with a stub abutment on MSE walls for the rear abutment, and a stub abutment with spill-through slopes for the forward abutment. The piers in the river were located parallel to the Great Miami River, and are full-height reinforced concrete walls. PRESSUREMETER TEST PROCEDUREThe driller advanced either casing or augers approximately 1 meter above the pressuremeter test. Steel casing was used to advance borings performed in the river, and augers were used for borings on land. Mud rotary drilling with a large diameter roller bit was used to remove all of the gravel and cobble fragments inside the casing or augers.At the pressuremeter test elevation the driller used a 63.5-mm (2.5-inch) carbide button bi-cone bit, using a rotation rate of about 60 rpm, a mud fl ow rate of about 10 gallons per minute (40 liters per minute), and an advance rate of 6 to 10 minutes per meter (2 to 3 minutes per foot). To minimize vibrations, advance rates were slower where excessive cobbles were encountered. The 63.5-mm (2.5-inch) O.D. slotted casing pressuremeter was lowered to the test elevation, often requiring either pushing or hammering into the test zone. We believe that the test zone was not perfectly straight, or that gravel or cobble fragments jutted into the test zone and had to be displaced to advance the pressuremeter into the test zone. The slotted casing prevented membrane damage during insertion. A photograph of the slotted casing being lowered into the borehole is shown below.The pressuremeter was calibrated for system compressibility and membrane resistance. At full expansion of 800 cm3, the membrane resistance of the slotted casing was about 2.5 bars.Strain-controlled tests were performed using a Texam control unit with a monocell probe. Volume increments of 20 cm3 were injected into the probe and corresponding pressures were measured. Near the end of the elastic portion of the test, an unload-reload cycle was done. A creep test was performed for 10 minutes at the next volume increment. The test continued until either 800 cm3 were injected or the membrane burst."

Removing sulfur and phosphorus from molten iron can be expressed by the following reactions, respectively. [S]Fe + (O2-)slag = (S2-)slag + [O]Fe [P]Fe + (3/2) (O2-)slag + (5/2) (FeO)slag = (PO43-)slag + (5/2) Fe(liquid) These equations indicate that desulfurisation and dephosphorisation have opposite oxygen potential conditions. If a small amount of desulfurisation slag not removed is carried over to dephosphorisation process, the reaction of sulfur mentioned above proceeds toward left hand resulting in increasing sulfur content in molten iron. For better understanding of such re-sulfurisation reaction in hot metal pre-treatments, the present study aimed at evaluating the effect of iron oxide on the sulfur distribution ratio between slag and hot metal. To measure sulfide capacities and FeO activities simultaneously at temperatures below the melting point of pure iron, CaO-SiO2-FeO and CaO-Al2O3-FeO ternary molten slags were brought into equilibria with copper-iron-sulfur liquid alloys, and the equilibrium oxygen partial pressures were determined with an electrochemical technique involving the stabilised zirconia solid electrolyte. The experimental results showed that the sulfide capacity increased with an increase in FeO content, and this trend was consistent with the fact that FeO was basic. Although the addition of FeO raised the FeO activity and oxygen potential, the calculated value for sulfur distribution ratio between slag and hot metal increased with increasing FeO content.

In a future world of 8.5 billion people in 2035, the Energy Information Administration's (EIA) projected 50% increase in energy consumption will require true "all of the above" energy resource use from oil, gas, renewables, nuclear, and coal. In particular, coal will continue to be the world's energy cornerstone, providing more incremental energy over that same time period than any other single fuel. Coal has long been a centerpiece of a low-cost, high-reliability electricity grid. Today there are 1.3 billion people across the globe without access to electricity and 2.7 billion people who do not have clean cooking facilities. The problem is spread across the developing world, but it is particularly severe in sub-Saharan Africa and developing Asia, which together account for 95% of people in energy poverty. Without a commitment to achieve universal energy access it has been estimated that by 2030, there will be an additional 1.5 million premature deaths per year caused by household pollution from burning wood and dung and through a lack of access to clean water, basic sanitation and healthcare. Modern energy sources are essential to meeting these challenges.

Este trabalho investigou o efeito do hidrogênio nas propriedades do aço 2,25Cr-1Mo-0,25V. As amostras foram envelhecidas a 600°C por 100h e 600h. Uma parte dos corpos de prova foi deixada somente na condição envelhecida e conduzidas ao ensaio de tração. Outras partes dos corpos de prova foram carregados com hidrogênio, sob tensão elástica e sem tensão aplicada, antes de serem conduzidos ao ensaio de tração. Análises microestrutural e fractografias foram realizadas via microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). Os corpos de prova envelhecidos por 600h não apresentaram significante diferença entre as tensões de escoamento e máxima, entre os corpos de prova carreagados com hidrogênio e não carregados (envelhecidos). Os corpos de prova envelhecidos por 100h e carregados com hidrogênio, no entanto, apresentaram uma queda nas tensões de escoamento e máxima quando comparadas com os corpos de prova somente envelhecidos.

INTRODUCTION Mine No. 95 of the Consolidation Coal Co., a divi¬sion of Continental Oil Co., is located in Shinnston, WV. Mine No. 95 was opened in January 1967 and has been operating continuously since that time. The mine has 544 hourly and salaried employees. In 1974 this mine was the largest coal producer in West Virginia. Opera¬tions include two longwall sections and eight Marietta Borer continuous miners. Originally there were also two Jeffrey Heliminer continuous miners, but use of these was discontinued in June 1978. Production averages 12 727 t/d (14,000 stpd). Two portals now service the mine with a third portal proposed for 1978. GEOLOGY Mining takes place in the Pittsburgh coal seam which dips 0.04 rad (21h°) northwest. The working seam is steam coal with an average height of 2.2 m (86 in.). Immediately above the seam, the overburden is com¬posed of 6.1 m (20 ft) of shales followed by 6.1 m (20 ft) of weak sandstone and 51.8 (170 ft) of shaley limestone. The shale weathers when exposed to mois¬ture. Surface water has been a problem due to a fire¬clay floor which turns to paste when mixed with water. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The present mining plan for Consol's No. 95 mine has a proposed life of 35 to 40 years. One set of main headings has been driven in the north direction and one set in a western direction. These are the areas in which the majority of the virgin coal lies. The panels are driven off of the mains at 2134 to 3048-m (7,000 to 10,000-ft) intervals. The continuous mining sections are set up 133 x 610 m (600 x 2000 ft). Longwall sections are 259 x 1220 m (850 x 7000 ft). All of these mining sections are retreating uphill. Development is with continuous miners. A Marietta Borer miner is used for the main development work. These miners cut 4.1 m (13 ft 6 in.) wide and 2.1 m (7 ft) high, leaving an arch cut. Along with the arch, a 152.4-mm (6-in.) thick layer of roof coal is left in place to protect the roof from weathering. The combi¬nation of the self-supporting arch and the roof coal al¬lows the entries to be driven 30.5 m (100 ft) without bolting. Full bolting, however, is carried outby the last open crosscut. This bolting is done on 1.5 x 1.5-m (5 x 5-ft) centers using 1.5-m (5-ft) long roof bolts with tandem anchors and 152.4-mm (6-in.) steel washer plates. When needed, crib blocks with a 50.4-mm (2-in.) drill hole are used as supplemental supports. Three-hole steel channel with the ends curved down¬ward to conform to the borer arch may also be used. In the mining sections, a 14 BU loader is used be¬hind the Marietta miner to load two Torkar shuttle cars. These haul to Long-Airdox feeder breakers which load onto a 1.07-m (42-in.) wide conveyor belt. With the exception of the shuttle cars, which use 275-V d-c power, the face equipment operates on 550-V a-c power. The main power line is 7200 V ac. The same loading and hauling equipment is used with the Marietta Borer miner for driving both panel and development entries. In the retreat sections, the same equipment with the exception of the miner is utilized. Because of the advantage of a variable cutting hight, Jeffrey Heliminer ripper-type continuous miners were employed in these retreat sections. For longwall mining the first unit uses an Eickoff EDW 300-L double-drum ranging shearer. Drum di¬ameter is 1.69 m (66 in.) with a drum rotation speed of 45 rpm. The drum is equipped with 48 Carmet 34-L-1 bits. The 300-kW (400-hp) motor operates on 1000 V. Tramming of the shearer head is done through a hydraulically driven 26-mm wide chain. Maximum cutting speed is 7.93 m/min (26 fpm), and maximum tram speed is 12.8 m/min (42 fpm) with an average cutting speed of 3.66 m/min (12 fpm). Web cutting depth is 762 mm (30 in.) and the cutting height is 2.13 m (7 ft). The conveyor width is 686 mm (27 in.). It uses a single chain, 26 mm thick, with flights on 0.91-m (3-ft) spacing. The face conveyor speed is 64.3 m/min (211 fpm) when driven by two 112-kW (150-hp) 1000-V Louis Allis motors through torque convertors. The roof support used is Gullick Dobson chocks [6-legged 77.3 t (85 st) per leg, 463.6 t (510 st) total capacity] with double-acting leg jacks. The hydraulic pressure for the legs is 13.8 MPa (2000 psi), and the hydraulic pressure for rams is 6.8 MPa (1000 psi). The yield valves are set at 57.8 MPa (8500 psi). Each chock weighs 4.09 t (4.5 st). The stage loader is an Eickoff drive, with a 68-kW (90-hp), (00-V Reliance motor. A 26-mm thick single strand chain with flights on 0.6-m (2-ft) centers runs at 75.89 m/min (249 fpm). The stage loader is self-advancing and is connected to the belt tail piece with a special fifth wheel attachment so that the stage loader can advance and guide the tail piece. The hydraulic pressure for the roof support is supplied by two 45-kW (60-hp) Reliance motors op¬erating on 699 V, with 1.26 L/s (20 gpm) constant volume Gullick hydraulic pumps. Each pump services alternate chocks, with the two pressure lines connected at the tailgate by 25.4-mm (1-in.) hydraulic hoses, rated at 27.21 MPa (4000 psi). The 6.8 MPa (1000 psi) pressure rams advance is supplied by a 45-kW (60-hp), 600-V Reliance motor and a 1.26-L/s (20-gpm) con¬stant volume Gullick pump. Return lines are 35.5-mm (1.4-in.) diam hydraulic hoses with rated capacity of 27.21 MPa (4000 psi). The fluid used in the hydraulic system consists of 95% water and 5% Hy-chock fire resistant water soluble oil. Water is stored and mixed in a 6096-L (2000-gal) track-mounted tank and goes to a 655-L (180-gal) reservoir at the pump. The belt conveyor structure is 1.07 m (42 in.) wide with 0.47 rad (27°) idlers, bottom stands located on 3.05-m (10-ft) centers, top stands on 1.5-m (5-ft) centers, and is supported on a 19-mm (3/4-in.) diam

O trabalho apresenta o estudo e resultados da aplicação do dessulfurante micronizado Puresteel-1000, seus benefícios, economia e melhoria do processo de dessulfuração. Objetivando redução de custo e manutenção nos parâmetros operacionais a CSN desenvolveu junto a um fornecedor um dessulfurante a base de CaO que favoreceu o atendimento com redução de custo .A metodologia utilizada para o trabalho foi à avaliação do sistema produtivo da EDG-CSN, e o estudo de solução para o processo apoiado na revisão bibliográfica do tema. A implantação da aplicação do dessulfurante micronizado Puresteel-1000 obteve para a CSN ganho através da redução de custo de aproximadamente 30% no custo do dessulfurante, mantendo os mesmos parâmetros operacionais.

In recent years, thermodynamic data have been used to a greater degree than ever by the chemical and metallurgical engineer as a means of predicting and controlling chemical reactions. To satisfy the spiraling demand for basic physical data needed for the calculations, the Bureau of Mines is studying the heat capacities of a variety of chemical compounds at high and low temperatures. This paper is one of a series presenting such data. The heat capacities of two alkaline earth compounds, strontium bromide and strontium nitrate, were measured in a temperature range of 60° to 300° K. in an adiabatic calorimeter and at temperatures of 300° to about 1,200° K. in a Bunsen ice calorimeter. The construction and operation of the calorimeters are discussed in other reports.3 4 The heat-capacity data presented in this report were extrapolated to 0° K., and smooth values of heat capacity, entropy, enthalpy function, and free-energy function were calculated and tabulated at even 10-degree intervals. The enthalpy data were fitted with algebraic equations by applying the method of least squares; calculations a£ heat-capacity values, entropy, enthalpy function, and free-energy function were made at even 50-degree intervals. The heat and entropy of fusion of strontium bromide were calculated from the enthalpy measurements.

In two previous paperslJ dealing with the carbon-oxygcn reaction, and the simultaneous content of each, in liquid steel in the furnace, we have made use of the quantity A[O], defined as the excess oxygen beyond what would be in equilibrium with carbon then present if the pressure of carbon monoxide were I atm.; that is, if [C] X [O] is taken as 0.00222, A[O] = [O] - 0.0022[C] where [O] is the percentage of oxygen by weight as measured by the method described earlier.3 This quantity ?[O] proves to be substantially independent of carbon content over the range 0.08 to I,z per cent, as well as of the basicity of the slag, and is nearly always within the limits o.o15 to o.oz5 per cent when the bath is boiling normally and is in what we have termed a steady state, Apparently it must be at least about 0.014 per cent before boiling occurs; but this threshold value seems to depend upon the ease of bubble formation at the metal-hearth interface, hence upon the condition of the surface of the hearth. In any case, ~(01, on the average, changes considerably following any disturbance of the bath, as by addition of ore. The present paper deals with the average changes in A[O] level following addition of spiegel or crop ends, or after procedures to promote stirring, or by tapping of the steel from the furnace. The observations were made on a large number of commercial heats, and consequently are subject to the influence of various disturbing factors; the results have the compensating merit of showing the consistency obtainable under the limitations imposed by practical operation. Variability of Excess Oxygen in Normal Open-hearth Operation The preceding genera' statements refer to the average value of A[0] particularly in heats that are boiling actively; on individual heats, which are less active, there may be a variable time lag between the disturbance and its effect, which complicates the interpretation of what is going on. For instance, if in the normal refining process boiling is sluggish, the slag usually is gaining Oxygen from the gas phase above it, Or from added Ore$ faster than it is losing oxygen to the metal; Yet when the bath starts to boil vigorously, the opposite condition may prevail for Some time. The consequence of this lag is a variation of A[o], the interpretation of which in a sing1e heat may not be immediately obvious. This condition is illustrated in Figs. I and 2. In Fig. 1, A[0] at the beginning of the test period was near the lower limit of its usual range (dashed lines) in the steady state as a consequence of the lime boil, which had ended about as indicated. "Abstract Piling and deep foundations are a staple for transportation projects in the United States (US). Driven or bored piles have been used for everything from support of bridge foundations and retaining structures to support of culverts and embankments on soft ground. Deep foundations have been popular in the US transportation market to better handle large axial and lateral loads, extreme event loading, and to better control structure movement. However, there are challenges in the maintenance of design and construction codes in transportation for consistent and reliable structure foundation elements. A significant amount of effort continues in the US to maintain national codes and specifications at a level consistent with the state of practice, and identify and conduct research for providing safe and cost effective highway structures.IntroductionThe transportation sector in the United States has a hierarchy of design and construction codes that are used for the specification of piling and deep foundations. Any highway or bridge project on the National Highway System (NHS) must be designed and constructed in accordance with a national set of standards approved by the State Highway Departments, and that are acceptable to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). However, in any jurisdiction, exceptions are permitted with approval. Therefore, design may be governed by the national standard specification, a state standard specification and design manuals, special provisions, or guideline specifications. Any of these standards, or a combination, may be used depending on the needs of the owner agency.The FHWA and the American Association of Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) have worked together in the development and maintenance of geotechnical design and construction guidance and codes that support the surface transportation community. General geotechnical engineering practice in the United States lacks a singular, national design and construction code that addresses all aspects of geotechnical engineering. As a result, the AASHTO specifications provide the most complete geotechnical specifications focusing on structure foundations, retaining walls, and buried structures for surface transportation applications. This includes piling and deep foundation types commonly used for support of bridges and transportation structures.The FHWA National Geotechnical Team has published several technical guidance documents that include guideline specifications for the design and construction of driven and bored deep foundations. Reference documents published by FHWA summarize the state of practice and provide recommended design and construction guidance. These reference documents have long served as a basis for provisions included in the AASHTO specifications. Maintenance of the design code and specification, and related guidance documents for consistent use on US transportation projects requires a collaborative effort between industry, FHWA, and the member state highway departments that make up AASHTO."

The microstructural variations of periclase (MgO) in the presence of oxide liquids are examined under the steelmaking variables of: 1) temperature, 2) liquid composition, and 3) FeO additions under different oxidation levels. Attention is given to the distribution of the phases, both liquid and solid, and to the growth of individual crystalline grains. Silicate liquids penetrate more extensively between individual periclase grains than do liquids containing high percentages of Fe2O3 Higher MgO solubilities in the liquid and lower MgO contents of the solid favor more rapid grain growth. The presence of a second solid phase reduces the periclase grain growth rate and increases the amount of the solid-to-solid contact within the oxide microstructures at high temperatures. The service suitability of a refractory depends on many factors. Two are of major importance and include 1) the thermal resistance to melting, and 2) the mechanical resistance to loads at service temperatures. Neither is a simple consequence of the service temperatures because service conditions will alter compositions, produce partial melting, and induee phase changes. Consequently, the equilibrium phase relationships have been rather thoroughly studied and give a knowledge of the thermal resistance to melting, but do not give full information about the mechanical properties because two refractories with the same types and quantities of phase may have different microstructures. Although variations of microstructures with time, temperature, and composition have been subjects for extensive investigation in metals, only a limited amount of comparable microstructural work has been performed for refractory materials.' This study was an attempt to evaluate some of the consequences of service parameters upon the microstructures of refractories so that bases may be established for the analyzing of high temperature mechanical properties. Periclase (MgO) was chosen as the refractory oxide; variables included those which are encountered under steelmaking conditions such as 1) temperature, 2) liquid composition, and 3) FeO additions under various oxidation levels. Specific attention was given to the distribution of the phases, both liquid and solid, and to the growth of individual crystalline grains. The most closely related work on microstructures of polyphase materials is that of Van Vlack and Rieg-ger2 on the microstructure of magnesiowüstite [(Mg,Fe)O] in the presence of silica. In that work which pertained to solid solutions with less than 40 pct MgO, most of the quantitative work was performed on FeO microstructures. The chief conclusions concerning these relatively low-melting oxide solids were as follows: 1) the rate of crystalline grain growth is inversely proportional to the grain diameter, 2) grain growth proceeds more rapidly at higher temperatures but is slightly retarded by additional liquid content, and 3) a Silicate-containing liquid penetrates as a film between the individual magnesiowüstite grains independent of time, temperature, amount of liquid, or the MgO/ FeO ratio. The above observations are in contrast to prior work3 on the microstructure of silica in the presence of iron oxide-containing liquids where the liquid does not penetrate as a complete film between solid grains. The phase relationships for the compositions of the present work are shown in Fig. 1 which is a summary of the work of several investigators.4 Of importance is the fact that CaO forms a more stable structure with SiO2 and Al2O3 than do either MgO or FeO. The oxygen potential has little effect on periclase unless iron oxide is also present. The iron oxide is ferrous at moderately low oxygen levels, changing to ferric as the Oxygen potential is increased so the spinels, magnetite, and magesioferrite are formed.5 These two phases are relatively stable in air at steelmaking temperatures. "Reduction of combustion-emitted greenhouse gases, which are associated with global warming, may be achieved by use of CO2-neutral alternative fuels, such as bio-ethanol. Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles (DDGS) are the main co-products of the com-grain-based ethanol industries. In 2009, the North American production of ethanol from com was about 38 billion liters, which generated approximately 31.5 million tons of DDGS. Samples of DDGS were pyrolysed at temperatures of 600-1000 °C in a two-stage laminar-flow horizontal furnace, and a catalyst system was used to synthesize nanomaterials. This work presents a microstructural characterization of these nanomaterials by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Results showed that the nanomaterials produced from pyrolysis of DDGS were in the form of long, entangled, rope-like structures with rugged walls, lengths in the tens of microns, and axially non-uniform diameters in the range of 100-300 nm.IntroductionThe interest in ethanol has increased considerably worldwide due to the necessity of finding renewable and cleaner energy resources [1, 2]. "One of the main functions of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, as authorized by Congress, is to investigate safety and health conditions, to disseminate information regarding safe and unsafe practices in mining, and to aid in improving safety and health conditions of mining communities and in promoting the welfare of the miner. Among several methods of reaching the miner and interesting him in safety work, perhaps the most effective is through the 11 mine safety stations and 11 railroad cars known as mine rescue, or more correctly, mine safety cars.Frequently, the Bureau of Mines receives requests for information regarding the purpose, equipment, personnel, and construction of its safety cars used in the field service. It is the intention of this circular to present to the mining public in particular, and to the public in general, some definite information regarding these safety cars and their functions.The cars are operated throughout the mining fields of the United States and are headquartered as follows (see fig. 1): Car 1, Reno, Nev.; Car 2, Raton, N. M.; Car 3, Pittsburgh, Pa.; Car 4, Terre Haute, Ind.; Car 5, Pineville, Ky.; Car 6, Pittsburg, Kans.; Car 7, Huntington, W. Va.; Car 8, Duluth, Minn.; Car 9, Butte, Mont.; Car 10, Des Moines, Iowa; Car 11, Anchorage, Alaska.One of the most important purposes of the U. S. Bureau of Mines safety cars is to render service at mine fires and explosions where human life is endangered. State mine inspectors and other interested persons are supplied with itineraries of the car operating in their districts from time to time, so that they may know at all times where the car can be found in case of emergency. When these disasters occur the car may be reached direct or through its field headquarters, and upon receiving word of a mine disaster, or request for assistance, it immediately proceeds to the scene of trouble. Frequently a special locomotive is supplied by the railroads and in many instances the movement of the car is given the right of way over all other railway traffic. Upon reaching the destination, the facilities and personnel of the car are immediately available for rescue and recovery operations.Following most mine disasters a thorough investigation is made by engineers of the Bureau of Mines, and a confidential report is submitted to the operator. The information gained in this manner from a large number of mine fires and explosions, together with the knowledge gained from the experimental work carried on at the Experimental mine of the bureau at Bruceton, Pa., serves as a basis upon which the bureau is able to recommend preventive measures whereby similar occurrences may be averted. The bureau car is often used as headquarters for the investigating engineer when such an examination is being made."
