IN a recent article,1 the authors reported the results of an X-ray investigation on the range of solid solutions that occurs in the iron-oxygen system in the vicinity of the compound FeO, which frequently is called "Wüstite." The object of that investigation was primarily to study the unusual type of solid solution phenomena involved in this range. Briefly summarized the results were: 1. The NaCl type of lattice found by earlier workers was confirmed. 2. The lattice dimensions decrease rapidly with decrease in iron content. 3. No alloy that was a homogeneous single phase was ever found at compositions beyond 76.80 per cent Fe, while the theoretical iron content of FeO is 77.73 per cent Fe. 4. Measurements of the densities and lattice constants led to the conclusion that the form of substitution was complex, an FeO group being replaced by oxygen. Such a substitution, of course, is equivalent to removing an iron atom (or ion). The ideal unit cell of FeO can be con-sidered as containing four groups of FeO and, thus, when this type of substitution takes place, there remain in the unit cell three FeO groups and an oxygen, or a total of seven atoms with a gross formula of Fe304 instead of the original Fe404. 5. This was the only interpretation that would fit the experimental results and at the same time be consistent with (a) the previously deter-mined fact that the FeO lattice is ionic (i. e., consists of Fe++ and 0= ions) and (b) the chemical fact that as the oxygen content of the substance increases, ferrous iron becomes oxidized to ferric iron. The experimental results of this investigation are included in Fig. 1.

The evolution of microstructure and mineral phases in iron ore sinters have been investigated by scanning electron microscope and QEMSCAN (Quantitative Evaluation of Minerals by Scanning Electron Microscopy). It was found that MgO, basicity and Al2O3 content play an important role in the formation of mineral phases and microstructure in sinter. The low Al2O3 (<2.0 wt%), medium MgO (2.0–2.5 wt%) and high basicity (>3.0) sinter showed higher low temperature degradation index (LTD) due to the presence of silico ferrites of calcium and aluminium (SFCA), and magnetite phase, and lower pore phase as compared to low basicity iron ore sinter.

Based on field observations and physical modeling of simulated materials, the dynamic equilibrium principle on the whole interaction process between the surrounding rocks and support of large deformation roadways in coal mines has been developed. It explains the methods of forming the bolted strata and its changing load capacity with deformation. It also points out the factors and conditions for forming the bolted strata as follows: (1) many entries in coal mines are subject to large deformation. During their service life, it goes through the following process, elastic > plastic > fiacture > broken > loosening, etc. During this dynamic process, the mechanisms of supporting structure are changing and therefore the interaction between support and rocks experiences a process of dynamic equilibrium. Furthermore, the required supporting force for stabilizing the surrounding rocks shows overall decreasing trend; (2) the bolted strata is a special supporting structure consisting of bolt, rock skin protection devices and rock strata within the bolted horizon. As deformation increases, the supporting structure of the broken strata within the bolted horizon experiences a process of periodic change, from equilibrium > not equilibrium > equilibrium. Corresponding to this change, the supporting capacity of the bolted strata also fluctuates and gradually decreases; (3) under the bolted strata, the stability of a large deformation roadway is dynamic and step-wise; and (4) the formation of bolted strata, especially bolted broken strata depends on the existence of compressive force. Supporting the bolted strata is not constrained by the quality of the surrounding rocks. It has broad range of application.

Efficient enrichment of high-carbon low-grade mica stone coal containing vanadium is a key problem in the mineral processing field, and the mature beneficiation process is yet to be developed and applied. In this paper, a special mineral mica type of stone coal containing vanadium from Tongshan, Hubei Province, China was selected as the research object. Chemical analysis results show that this mineral contains V2O5 0.71%, SiO2 49.28%, C 13.44%, and CaO 6.26%. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) shows that vanadium generally exists in all kinds of mica minerals in 20 µm to 50 µm fractions. Mica stone coal containing vanadium must be ground to a particular fineness (approximately 45 µm). To reduce acid consumption during vanadium extraction from stone coal through acid leaching, a pretreatment process was proposed to enrich micas by using shaking table and flotation methods. A new combined technology process was implemented, resulting in a 0.96% improvement in the vanadium grade of raw materials in the succeeding process. Vanadium losses were controlled to 4.57% through the pre-concentration process, which reduced the burden of the subsequent procedure. The content of high acid consuming minerals was also diminished, such that approximately 6612 CNY was saved from producing 1 t V2O5. Therefore, stone coal containing vanadium should be pre-concentrated by using an appropriate combined process to reduce costs.

Cobalt sulfate solutions containing ammonium acetate and chloroplatinic acid were reduced by hydrogen in a pyrex-glass lined autoclave in the temperature range of 170o to 232°C and hydrogen partial pressure range of 115 to 830 psia. The reduction rate was directly proportional to the hydrogen partial pressure and surface area of the pyrex glass and was independent of the quantity of chloroplatinic acid added initially. Experiments involving the variation of the relative concentration of ammonium acetate indicated that the reducible cobalt complex was probably the diacetate complex of cobalt, Co(AC)4H20, or a new mononcetate complex Co Ac, which was in solubility equilibrium with a pink precipitate of CO(AC)-4HzO. THE reaction in which a metal is dissolved by an acid to produce gaseous hydrogen and a salt solution was discovered early in the history of chemistry. In 1859 Beketoff found experimentally that this reaction could be reversed; i.e., a salt solution could be reduced by gaseous hydrogen to produce a metal and an acid. A review of work done on this phenomenon since that time may be found elsewhere., The hydrogen reduction of a cobalt salt solution is facilitated by complexing the cobalt ion. An ammonia complex of cobalt has been reduced commercially in the recovery of cobalt metal. A new reducible complex of cobalt was discovered5 when it was found that a co-baltous sulfate solution containing ammonium acetate could be reduced by hydrogen at temperatures in the region of 200°C. When a cobalt sulfate-ammonium acetate solution was heated to a temperature below its normal boiling point, a violet color became apparent, indicating complex formation. The nature of this complex was investigated5 by the addition of NH4Ac to a CoSO4 solution maintained at 85o. During the first additions of NH, Ac, the pH of the solution remained fairly constant at about 5.85. However, as the ratio of NH,Ac to CoSO, approached two, the pH rose and then leveled off at about 6.05. The absorption spectra of a Co(Ac), solution and a CoSO,, NH Ac solution were obtained at 85°C and were compared and found to be the same. These findings suggested that the diacetate complex of cobalt, Co(Ac),.4H20, was formed at 85°C. When a cobalt sulfate-ammonium acetate solution was heated to a temperature above about 165o, a finely divided pink precipitate appeared. The X-ray diffraction pattern of this precipitate indicated that it was Co(Ac), - 4H,O. In addition, it was discovered that when chloroplatinic acid, H,PtCl;, was added initially to the cobalt sulfate-ammonium acetate solution, a faster reduction was obtained. The roles of the solution complex, pink precipitate and chloroplatinic acid in the reduction process were then investigated. APPARATUS The experimental work was carried out in a two-liter stainless-steel autoclave. Adetailed description of the autoclave and the auxiliary equipment used in maintaining constant temperature and pressure may be found elsewhere.= Because the stainless steel was corroded, and also because it acted as a hydrogena-tion catalyst, an all-glass liner was fabricated such that the solution came only into contact with flame-polished pyrex glass. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The solutions used in the experimental work were prepared by dissolving reagent grade chemicals in distilled water. Although variation of the brand of ammonium acetate appeared to have no effect on the experimental results, CoSO, 7H O from the J. T. Baker Chemical Co. of Phillipsburg, N. J.,was found to give faster reductions than that prepared by Allied Chemical and Dye Corp., N. Y. The former was used throughout the course of the experimental work and was weighed up at the outset of each experiment. The ammonium acetate was dissolved to form a 6M stock solution, which was stored under refrigeration. A 10 pct solution of chloroplatinic acid (J. T. Baker Chemical Co.) was diluted to a 1.15 x 1Q2 M stock solution, which was standardized by precipitation of K,PtCl, as outlined by Scott. The Jim Bridger Mine is operated by Bridger Coal Company and is located in Sweetwater County, 35 miles (56 km) northeast of Rock Springs, Wyoming (USA). The general location of the mine site is shown on Figure 1. Bridger Coal is a joint venture of NERCO Coal Corp, the operator, and Idaho Energy Resources Company. The permit boundary encompasses in excess of 20,000 acres (81 km2) and is nestled against the western side of the Continental Divide. Production started on July 3, 1974, and the mine has produced approximately 90 million tons (82 million t) while moving approximately 450 million cubic yards (344 million m3) of virgin earth. Annual production averages 5 to 7 million tons (4.5 to 6.4 million t) of run-of-mine coal. Coal is consumed on site by the Jim Bridger Power Plant, a 2,000-megawatt generating station, and the electricity is transmitted to the Pacific Northwest power grid (Oregon, Idaho, Northern California, etc.).

In this work the formation and environmental stabilization potential of arsenate-containing fluoroapatites is considered. In particular in this research various compounds were precipitated from synthetic solutions containing fluoride, arsenate/phosphate and calcium by varying different parameters-temperature, Ca:As ratio, pH, and P:As ratio, and aging time. The results obtained helped determine the operating window that should be used for the formation of highly crystalline fluoroapatites, in particular svabite (Ca5(AsO4)3F). It was found that svabite has a specific pH range of precipitation, with lower pH yielding CaF2 and calcium arsenate compounds such as CaHAsO4•H2O. At higher pH, a mixture of svabite and johnbaumite (Ca5(AsO4)3OH) precipitated, yielding a less stable material. This range of precipitation varied with the concentration of arsenic in the starting solution, and widened with higher initial concentrations of Ca2+, AsO4 3- and F-. Furthermore, svabite/fluoroapatite solid solutions were formed by using the same procedure as svabite but replacing some of the arsenate in solution by phosphate. The increase in phosphate content yielded a gradual change in morphology and crystallinity. Work on stability evaluation is currently under way.

Bureau of Mines personnel evaluated the potential availability of nickel from 151 deposits in 18 market economy countries and selected 126 for detailed analyses. An evaluation was made of tonnage-cost relationships indicating the quantity of nickel available at various total costs of production expressed in dollars per pound nickel, including a 15-pct rate of return on the invested capital. The 126 deposits studied contain approximately 73 million metric tons (t) of nickel. An estimated 52 million t is available from laterite deposits, of which less than 2 pct could be produced at $3.50/lb Ni, about equal to the average published price of nickel in 1981. Approximately 21 million t of nickel is available from sulfide deposits, of which about 10.0 million t can be produced at $3.50/lb. Sensitivity studies performed for both laterite deposits and sulfide deposits indicate that the total cost of nickel from laterites is most sensitive to increases in energy costs, and that sulfides are most sensitive to increases in labor costs; sulfides are also sensitive to changes in byproduct revenues. In 1983 the Nickel Mountain mine in Oregon was the only U.S. producer, though development continued on the Gasquet property in California. Of the total 5.1 million t of recoverable nickel in the United States, about 20 pct is available at or below $3.50/lb.

INTRODUCTION Column-type supports are used to prevent roof falls in underground excavations. The first individual column supports were made from timber that was cut to fit the irregular heights of mine seams. Because the seam height of the material removed varied throughout the mine, timber posts generally could be used only once. During the I 920s, steel friction props began to appear in British and European mines, and, by the 1950s, thousands of these props were being used. However, the steel friction props were heavy, difficult to install, and difficult to recover. Furthermore, the friction props could not be preloaded, and their yielding behavior was rather erratic. In 1946, hydraulic props were introduced in En¬gland, and, within a few years, they replaced friction props throughout Europe. The first application of hy¬draulic props in the United States occurred in the 1950s, during early experiments with longwall mining. Modern technology and high-production mining procedures have combined to make the use of hydraulic props a very acceptable method of providing temporary heavy-duty support for production areas. In areas such as development headings, where only modest roof loads are expected, lighter-duty jackscrews, ratchet jacks, and light hydraulic props are used. ADVANTAGES OF HYDRAULIC SUPPORTS The acceptance of hydraulic supports has been wide¬spread during the past 25 years, proving their reliability and effectiveness in preventing roof falls. Some of the advantages provided by hydraulic supports are: 1) Individual hydraulic props can be installed within 30 sec, resulting in a minimum exposure of per¬sonnel and equipment to an unsupported roof. 2) Hydraulic props can be preloaded to more than 4.5 t (5.0 st), increasing the frictional resistance between the rock strata. Thus, the roof is kept tight, improving the behavior of the unsupported ground. 3) If gradual roof sagging or bottom heaving im¬poses an irresistible force, the hydraulic prop yields gradually and continues to support the ground. 4) The support capacities of the hydraulic props most widely used range between 10 and 20 t (11 and 22 st). Their support capacities are maintained during yielding to an irresistible force. 5) Hydraulic props can be recovered rapidly. Where no other supports are provided for the roof, as in pillar¬ing operations, the hydraulic props can be recovered by remote means. 6) The length of hydraulic props is readily adjust¬able allowing them to be reused in seams where roof height varies. 7) Studies of mining operations indicate that the use of hydraulic props increases both personnel safety and mine productivity. Demand for nonfuel minerals depends on the overall state of the economy, which steadily improved each quarter in 1984. New housing starts rose to 1.8 million units. Automakers turned out about 15% more cars (7.8 million) and 30% more trucks (3.1 million) than in 1983. Nevertheless, many domestic mineral operations experienced difficulties in 1984. This resulted from import competition greater use of newer engineered materials, emphasis on multi-unit housing and downsizing of motor vehicles. About 15% of our energy was imported. This in cluded $36 billion worth of crude oil and $22 billion in refined products This added significantly to the overall merchandise trade deficit of $12; billion. On the bright side for mining, coal production rose 14% to 810 Mt (890 mil lion st). Three-fourths o: the coal was burned to generate electricity and more than half of our electricity was derived from coal-burning plants. With the exception of a few large-bulk, low-value raw minerals, most minerals move relatively freely in world trade. The strong dollar encouraged imports and made exporting more difficult. Consequently, our nonfuel minerals trade deficit rose 60% to $19 billion, reflecting imports of $39 billion and exports of $20 billion. There were increased pressures from some major segments of the minerals industry for some form of import protection. But President Reagan said, "Our goal is a system of free and fair trade in goods, services, and capital. We will work toward this goal through both bilateral and multilateral trading agreements." The US minerals industry consists of domestic mines, concentrators, smelters, refineries, mineral manufacturing plants, and recyclers. It also includes many wholly- or partially-owned operations in many parts of the world, providing employment and income for US citizens and others as well. Compared with 1983, the value of US raw nonfuel mineral output rose 8%, to $23 billion. The $253 billion worth of goods processed from this crude mineral output was a 14% increase. Major Metals Raw steel production - a major indicator of both material use and mineral production-rose 10%, to 84 Mt (93 million st). This stimulated a 36% rise in domestic iron ore production, to 52 Mt (57 million st), about 98% pelletized. Iron ore imports rose 44%, to 14 Mt (15 million st). Despite the increase of steel production, output remained well below levels of just a few years ago. For example, 1984 production was still 23% less than in 1981. Raw steelmaking capacity remained steady at 122 Mt (135 million st). The industry continued to cite steel imports as a major reason for low domestic capacity. In December, pacts with seven leading steel exporting nations were announced. This is an effort to reduce import penetration to about 18.5% of the domestic market. Domestic producers of bulk ferroalloys of chromium, manganese, and silicon operated at about 50% capacity. The US mined no manganese or chromium. Only a small quantity of ferronickel was produced from domestic laterite mining in Oregon. Molybdenum production, at 45 kt (49,500 st), rose threefold. "Karagedik Chromite Concentrator of the ETI Holding Co., which is located in Fethiye (south Turkey), has been producing chromite concentrate assaying 47-48 % Cr2O3 from the chromite ores containing 30-35 % Cr2O3 by using gravity separation methods since 1920. The tailings having 13-14 % Cr2O3, which had been removed from this plant, were accumulated at the stockpiles amounting about 1.2 million tons. In order to recover the ultra fine chromite particles from the Karagedik Concentrator tailings, the new process including Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation and column flotation, was developed and the Karagedik Research Pilot Plant based on this process was commissioned in 2000. At this plant, the final concentrates assaying 46-48% Cr2O3 were produced and overall plant recoveries are about 60-65%.At the chromite concentrators using gravity separation methods, if their material size is about minus 1.0 mm, chromite particles especially pass to fine fractions according to their mineralogical structures and the ore-genesis (Önal and Güney, 1990). Generally, after crushing and grinding, the shaking tables and spirals are used at the chromite concentrators; therefore fine size chromite particles (-0.038 mm) are removed as tailings. Cr2O3 content of the -0.1 mm size fraction with 52.3% of the total amount is 19.58 % with Cr2O3 distribution of 82.6%.In order to upgrade the minus 0.1 mm size fraction of the tailings, assaying about 20% Cr2O3, Karagedik Research Pilot Plant (KRPP), which includes Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separator (WHIMS) and Column Flotation units, was installed by Istanbul Technical University (ITU), Mineral Processing Section in 2000.Feeding material of the KRPP having 5 tons per hour capacity is obtained from stockpiles amounting 1.2 million tons. After attrition scrubbing, the feed is sent to a screen with aperture of 1.0 mm. The screen overflow, assaying 5-6 % Cr2O3 is removed as tailings. Screen underflow is classified to –1.0+0.1 mm and minus 0.1 mm size fractions by using cyclone and sieve bend. –1.0+0.1 mm size fraction assaying 6-7 % Cr2O3, is sent to existing gravity separation plant. Minus 0.1 mm size fraction is firstly fed to WHIMS for pre-concentration and non-magnetic product assaying 10-11 % Cr2O3 consisting of serpentine, talc and olivine minerals are separated as tailings. Also magnetic product (25-30 % Cr2O3) obtained from WHIMS is fed to the two stages conditioners after dewatered to 30 % solid ratio."

Metal dusting is a corrosion phenomenon that occurs in strongly carburizing gas atmospheres at elevated temperatures. Reaction kinetics and product characterizations of Alloys 602CA and 800 were examined by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD).The results showed that Alloy 602CA is more resistant to metal dusting than Alloy 800. Visual examination and SEM surface analysis showed that Alloy 800 suffered metal dusting attack after a relatively short exposure period. The amount of coke deposits increased on Alloy 800 with increased exposure from 96 to 336 hours. X-ray diffraction on the reacted surfaces identified graphite and austenite in both alloys and some iron oxides/spinel for Alloy 800.

Newmont’s Yanacocha operation in Peru presented an especially challenging environment for reliable cyanide measurement and control, processing 3 semi-distinct complex ore types with feed Cu ranging from below 250ppm (as CuCN) to more than 5000ppm, and feed S ranging from low to 5%, resulting in cyanide consumption from as low as 1.5 kg/t to as high as 3.1 kg/t, and gold recovery ranging from approximately 57% to about 78 % (average plant performance based on the type of ore). A literature search by the authors to identify a method for accurate cyanide determination that was also suitable for automation settled on the work of Breuer et al (2011) as a basis. Early challenges in adapting the laboratory technique for the ‘real solutions’ and the range of variability experienced in the plant are discussed, as are other operational challenges due to the complex and changing solution chemistry.

O presente trabalho visou contribuir para o melhor entendimento do mecanismo inerente ao uso de agente coloidisante/dispersante no processo de pelotização de concentrado de minério de ferro. Avaliou-se a influência dos agentes coloidisantes em comparação aos aglomerantes Peridur e bentonita. Para este fim, foram realizados ensaios de bancada visando a identificação de possíveis ações destes agentes no grau de dispersão das misturas, bem como a sua influência na liberação/aglomeração dos finos. Os resultados destes parâmetros foram confrontados com os resultados de caracterização das pelotas confeccionadas com os diferentes agentes pelos quais foi possível identificar que os dispersantes tem forte atuação sobre o conteúdo de finos do concentrado de minério de ferro. A ação principal se dá pela remoção das partículas ultrafinas que recobrem os grãos mais grosseiros presentes na amostra e as dispersam, no caso dos dispersantes, aumentando a disponibilidade do conteúdo de finos &lt;4 µm, principalmente os finos &lt;1 µm (coloides). No caso do aglomerante orgânico, observa-se também essa ação, no entanto, os finos presentes são aglomerados na faixa entre 26 e 4 µm.

In the OG (Osaka Gas) process which includes a fusion process of sewage disposal sludge in coke bed knowledge of molten and fluid properties of the sludge are most important to controll the process in good condition. Thus, the softening and melting temperatures and viscosity were measured by the sessile drop technique and a rotating viscometer. Obtained results are summarized as follows: Melting character of sludge slag is varied according to their composition, but closely related to CaO/SiO2 ratio in ordinary sludge and to CaO/(Cr2O3,+Al2O3+P2O5) ratio in Cr2O3 containing sludge. Fluid property of sludge slag has a correlation with optical basicity or Riboud parameter, However, the correlation is poorer than that of metallurgical slags. Especially, chromium oxide containing sludge shows high viscosity and behaves somewhat different manner from ordinary sludge.

"In this study, the recycling conditions of waste liquor obtained after the production of tungsten boride powder from calcium tungstate by self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) and the following hydrochloric acid leaching were investigated in detail. Environmentally unfriendly and extremely acidic (pH~ -0.3) liquor consisting of calcium, magnesium, and boron ions was treated with 1 M sodium carbonate solution to precipitate magnesium carbonate and calcium carbonate phases. The obtained amorphous precipitates were heated up to the temperature of 400°C for re-crystallization. As a result, MgO, CaC03 and CaMg(C03)z phases were obtained, while sodium, boron, chlorine ions were remain in the solution. The present study is still in progress.IntroductionSelf-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) is one of the techniques used in the production of a variety of advanced ceramics, inter-metallic, organic and inorganic compounds, oxygen free single crystals, and polymers [ 1, 2]. The reaction becomes selfsustaining and propagates in the reactant mixture, after initiation in SHS process. SHS products may contain the mixture of several unwanted compounds and elements. Therefore following acidic leaching process may be needed to purify the target product. In the previous study, calcium tungstate (Ca W04), magnesium (Mg) and boric acid (B20 3) mixture were reacted to produce tungsten boride powder by SHS process according to the Reaction 1. Then, magnesium and calcium containing byproducts (i.e. MgO, Mg3B206 and Ca3B206) found in the SHS product were leached out by using concentrated hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution to obtain pure tungsten boride powder [3].Ca W04 + 0.5B203 + 4.5Mg = WB + 4.5Mg0 + Cao (1)After the leaching, filtrate solution consisting of different amounts of magnesium, calcium, and boron requires additional treatment for the environmentally acceptable disposal.Several works were carried out about magnesium precipitation conditions and kinetics from brines. Rabadzhieva et al. investigated the precipitation of Mg(OH)z from brines by using NaOH as well as caustic soda [ 4]. Turek ve Gnot investigated the precipitation efficiency of Mg(OH)z for the temperature range between 10-40°C, while the reaction was kinetically experimented by Alamdiri et al [5, 6]. When Oryx Mine down-scaled in 1994, focus was placed on development, with the primary aim being the exposure and proving of ore reserves. In order to achieve this aim, development ends had to be advanced to reef at the maximum possible rate. This in turn called for support methods which could keep up with the advancing faces, taking up minimum space and time for installation, while providing on the face a real coverage and effective long-term support. In the majority of the development ends which were located in fairly competent ground, the grouted rod development support proved to be adequate until such time as secondary support in the form of meshing and lacing could be installed. The ends developing towards the eastern boundary of the mine, especially in the ?C? block, encountered extremely adverse ground conditions due to the presence of smectite zones within the footwall quartzites. Smectites are a group of montmorillonite clay materials, mainly composed of hydrous aluminosilicates. They occur as minute platy crystals in the rock mass and are especially notable for their ability to absorb liquids. Generally, the zones are found in between the bedding planes of the host rock, and may vary considerably in thickness over short distances. Wherever the smectites were exposed by the development blasting, the rockwalls weathered as the smectites absorbed water and the condition of the tunnel rockwalls deteriorated rapidly. When the smectites were left exposed and allowed to weather, it became almost impossible to install secondary permanent support such as meshing and lacing at a later stage. To minimise the exposure time and subsequent deterioration of the smectite zones, it was recommended that all development ends encountering smectites be shotcreted as soon as possible after blasting. In developing a shotcreting support methodology, both a drycreting and wetcreting system were investigated. The situation at the time ruled out the use of a wetcreting system on the basis of the extensive and costly infrastructure required, as well as its limited manoeuverability. Instead, it was decided to opt for as maller scale but more manoeuverable drycreting system. The system utilized a number of portable drycrete machines with pre-bagged cement, which could support several development ends in close proximity. Initial trials using normal 30 MPa shotcrete on 19level proved successful and the system was implemented.

The Condrey Mountain RARE II area lies mostly within the Elliot Creek mining district, a significant producer of gold from placers, and gold, Silver, copper, and minor soapstone from lode deposits. No mineral production has occurred within the study area; no resources are known in the area. However, significant resources in lode and placer deposits are just outside the west and northwest boundary of the area. The Blue Ledge Mine (fig. 1, no. 15) adjacent to the western boundary, is reported to contain 226,000 ton; (205,000 t) of identified resources averaging 0.05 oz gold per ton (1.7 g/t), 2.16 oz silver per ton (/4.0 g/t), 3.5 percent copper, and 3.95 percent zinc. The mine has produced 11,131 tons (10,114 t) of ore that yielded 1,026 oz (31,908 g) of gold, 58,431 oz (1.8 million g) of silver, and 2.7 million lb (1.2 million kg) of copper. Exploration is currently underway at `he mine and vicinity, including part of the study area.

"It was possible to beneficiate a low-grade iron ore fines sample from Bellary-Hospet, Karnataka, India assaying 56% Fe, 9.1% SiO2 and 5.2% Al2O3 and produce two concentrates, namely, a sinter-grade fines concentrate (43.7% by weight), assaying 63.6% Fe, 2.6% SiO2 and 1.7% Al2O3, and a pellet-grade concentrate (30.7% by weight) assaying 64.7% Fe, 2.9% SiO2 and 1.7%Al2O3. Rejects (25.6% by weight) assayed 32.5% Fe, 27.9% SiO2 and 15.4% Al2O3. The mineralogical characterization indicated that the sample consisted of 69.5% ironbearing minerals (56% hematite, 7.5% martite and 6% goethite-limonite), 12.5% quartz and 15.2% clay, and the rest were minor minerals. Liberation size was found to be in the size range of 25 to 100 µm. The process flow sheet consists of jigs, spirals, grinding and low- and high-intensity magnetic separation of the deslimed feed. IntroductionJSW Steel Ltd is a 10-Mt/a integrated steel plant. To produce 10 Mt/a hot metal requires nearly 16 to 20 Mt/a iron ore fines. The fast depletion of highgrade iron ore fines, increased industrial demand and an increase in iron ore prices have necessitated the exploitation and use of low-grade iron ore fines in the steel-making process after beneficiation. Thus, the beneficiation of low-grade iron ores by removing the associated gangue minerals and enhancing their grade is essential. The use of these iron ore fines in sinter and pellet making has prompted the undertaking of systematic studies on low-grade iron ores.Finely disseminated low-grade iron ores with siliceous impurities have been upgraded by gravity, magnetic and flotation-based processes (Burt, 1994; Svoboda, 1987; Houot, 1983). The processing of low-grade Indian hematite ore containing high levels of alumina-bearing minerals as impurities present separation challenges and pose special problems in martite and magnetite, in association with quartz and clay as the gangue-forming minerals. Alumina is mainly contributed by clay (kaolinite, montmorillonite, illite, alunite), lateritic material and gibbsite; some alumina occurs as solids in iron oxide minerals, namely, goethite and limonite.
