Outside air for ventilating coal mines in Alabama varies considerably in both temperature and moisture content during the year. Alternate condensation and evaporation of the moisture on mine roofs may result in stresses detrimental to the strength of mine roof. It is well known that the clays in shales absorb moisture, and many investigations have noted the weakening of shales by absorption of moisture. Parker (1970) concluded that there is an annual cycle of rock deterioration in mine roof rock caused by the annual temperature-humidity cycle at the surface. He further noted that moisture reduces the strength of dry rock by one-half, that moisture added to dry rock can cause failure in compression, and that drying of wet rock causes tensile stress buildups by shrinkage. His recommendations for alleviating the moisture-temperature problem was to seal the rock in critical areas and to control ventilation so that air temperature will be lower than rock temperature. The latter recommendation will avoid condensation on the rock surfaces. Hartmann and Greenwald (1941) published the results of a very comprehensive experimental project to determine the effect of temperature and humidity changes on the behavior of mine roof. Their general conclusions included statements that roof rocks were very sensitive to moisture changes, but had low coefficients of thermal expansion. It is, as the author says, a modification of the apparatus designed by Dr. Rosenhain, but it is evidently quite an; improvement. The author is to be congratulated on the fact that lie has given us, with his apparatus, a quantitative thermal analysis of these critical points. I notice the author refers to Ac3, Ac2, and Ac1. His designation of the Ac2 point is all right, but naturally in a steel with as much carbon as this, which would mean a hypereutectic steel, the other point might better be considered as an Ac, point with possibly another point above the Ac, point. Another important point brought out is the fact that, in Fig. 3, the lines representing the Ar1, transformation and the Ac,1_3 transformation do not intersect at the zero rate curve,

The study of the high-temperature oxidation of pure metals, intensively pursued experimentally since the pioneer work of Pilling and Bedworth1 and supplemented by the recent theoretical work of Wagner2 is now well advanced. The important field of low-temperature oxidation—i.e., oxidation extending only through the temper color range of thicknesses with the formation of thin oxide layers in the range from 0 to 1000-2000 ?ngstroms—has not, however, reached so satisfactory a state, owing largely to the experimental difficulties that attend the formation and study of thin films; most of the work has been performed on abraded specimens whose surface irregularities approximated the thickness of the films formed. It has been pointed out that the rates of oxidation of different crystal faces are different and that the difierence may be related to the orientation relationships that obtain between the metal crystal and the superimposed oxide crystal; it has also been suggested that this orientation dependence should manifest itself in rates of oxidation and perhaps also of corrosion in aggregates bearing preferred orientations.3'4 An attempt to measure the rates of oxidation of different crystal faces of alpha iron demonstrated this difference in rate,4 but the dependence of rate on orientation was not simple; the method of measuring thickness, consisting of a color comparison with barium stearate multi-films of known thickness, was not wholly satisfactory. For these reasons it was felt that a study of the rate of oxidation of single crystals prepared with surfaces as smooth as possible, using a sensitive method giving true film thickness, should be profitable. Copper was chosen because of the ease of reduction of the primary oxide film and because the orientation relationships between metal and oxide and the composition of the oxide films formed at low temperatures are known; for thin films formed at low temperatures, Cu2O alone occurs.22-24 Experimental Procedure Various methods of surface preparation were attempted in order to obtain a surface that would oxidize uniformly and repro-ducibly. Electrolytic polishing by the method of Jacquet5 and electrolytic and mechanical polishing followed by annealing in vacuum and in purified hydrogen at various temperatures were tested. The procedure finally adopted consisted in a fine metallographic polish followed by an anneal in purified hydrogen at temperatures of 900° to 1000°C. for 12 hr. or more. The surface so produced was very bright and smooth, with no trace of specular etching (though some grain-boundary etching was observed); indeed, fine scratches produced by the final polish were entirely removed by the high-temperature anneal. After this treatment, the specimens were cooled in hydrogen to room temperature and placed in the oxidation furnace, where

The activation energy required to break a pinned dislocation line away from its condensed atmosphere of impurity atoms is calculated as a .function of applied stress, without neglecting line tension. Reasows are presented for not assuming the effect of line tension to be negligible when considering the problem of freeing a small segment of dislocation from an impurity atmosphere. The dislocation is considered to he pinned at each atomic size along its length and the pinning points are assumzed immobile. The development is a refinement of the origznal cottrell-bilby1 theory. The solution is compared to recent approximations developed by cottrell3 and Haasen5 in which line tension con- IN 1949 Cottrell and bilby1 considered the problem of determining the force required to pull a dislocation away from its condensed atmosphere of impurity atoms. They also examined the effect of thermal fluctuations on this force. The dislocation line was pictured as bowing out in a triangular loop under the action of an applied stress, and the activation energy necessary to free the dislocation from its atmosphere was calculated as a function of stress, line energy, and dislocation-solute atom interaction. siderations were neglected. A qualitative explanation of the yielding process in terms of the activation of Frank-Read sources is presented, but the lack of a realistic solution to the dynamic dislocation problem involved prevents an extension of the model at present. A self-consistent correlation between the present calculations and experimental data for delay time associated with yielding and the temperature dependence of the upper yield stress was made. Favorable agreement was noted. It is concluded that extension of the original Cottrell-~ilby' theory which includes line tension effects can just as well describe the yielding process as other approximations3,5 which neglect line tension. Cottrell and Bilby found the form of the activation energy vs stress curves to be almost independent of the line energy and the interaction energy (i.e., these parameters only affected the activation energy U by a scale factor). A check of the theory was accomplished by comparison with the experimental data of McAdam and Mebs2 for the lower yield stress as a function of temperature. cottrell,3 in 1957, attempted to obtain a simple closed-form solution for the activation energy as a function of stress by linearizing the quartic equation relating displacement of the dislocation line and applied stress. A program has been conducted to determine the feasibility of providing a borehole liner for Kelly Bar drilled boreholes in Southern Florida. The concept was to drill the borehole with the Kelly Bar and with it still in the borehole insert a tube which would remain in the unstable ground after withdrawl of the bar. The tube then will provide an unobstructed borehole for the charging of explosives upon completion of the drilling the shot pattern.

The transport mechanisms previously proposed in wustite and hematite have been confirmed by movement of inert markers during the growth of these phases. By similar measurements the mechanism for magnetite has been determined. The rates of growth of multilayer scales on iron, magnetite and hematite on wustite, and hematite on magnetite have been measured. All rates are found to be diffusion controlled under the conditions of the experiments. MANY studies have been made of the rate of oxidation of iron in both the low temperature, film-forming region and the high temperature scaling range. The interpretation of the results has been greatly complicated by the formation of multi-layered scales containing the various phases of iron oxides. In most cases no attempt has been made to determine the composition of the scale and its dependence on time of oxidation in a quantitative manner. However, several recent studies'" have taken this variable into account. It is generally agreed that the growth of thick scales on iron follows a parabolic rate law for the increase of total thickness. In the thin film region agreement has been claimed with parabolic equations of various forms and with logarithmic equations. The discussion here will be concerned only with the formation of scales of considerable thickness, greater than several microns, although some of the conclusions may be applicable to thin films. A brief survey will be given of the solid phases of the iron-oxygen system, the stability of wiistite in bulk and in thin films, the relative densities of iron in the metal and oxides, and the kinetics of forma- tion of oxide scales on iron. New experimental results will be introduced at several points during the discussion, and an attempt will be made to formulate a mechanistic picture consistent with these observations. The experimental techniques are described in an appendix. Iron-Oxygen System Fig. la shows the iron-oxygen phase diagram. Wüstite ("FeO"): The lowest of the oxides has a NaCl type cubic lattice formed by close-packing of the relatively large oxide ions with the smaller iron ions arranged in the interstices. The ionic radius for 0' is about 1.3 A, while Fe++ has a radius of about 0.8A and Fe"' about 0.7A. Its range of existence on the phase diagram is very wide for an ionic material of this type and does not seem to include the stoi-chiometric composition FeO. These deviations appear to be well established as vacancies on iron lattice sites by the comparison of lattice parameters and densities for a series of compositions by Jette and Foote.4 The limits of the field are disputed, but the work which seems most reliable" indicates vacancies in from 5 pct to more than 12 pct of the iron sites. In order for the crystal to be electrically neutral, there must be electron holes which correspond to the formation of trivalent iron ions equal to twice the number of vacancies. Magnetite ("Fe³O4"): Considerable disagreement also exists in the literature about the stable range of the Fe³O4 field. Some diagrams show the Fe³O4 composition to be lower in oxygen than the formula indicates, but Schenck6 gives a diagram from the

The Campamento Au/Ag deposit, discovered by Linear Gold in 2004, is located in Chiapas State, southern Mexico. The deposit is hosted by a sequence of Pleistocene-Pliocene andesitic volcanic rocks that have been intruded by a feldspar-phyric porphyry complex. Measured and indicated resources are 852 000 oz Au and 3.46 million ounces Ag with inferred resources of 374 000 ounces Au and 920 000 oz Ag. Resources were estimated at a 1.0 g/t Au equivalent cut-off. This is an ABSTRACT only. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.

Philippine laterite and serpentine ores can be utilized in an electric furnace operation to produce both a steel ingot and a ferronickel product. Figure 1 is a schematic interpretation of a plant in which laterite and serpentine ores are processed separately to obtain both ferronickel and steel as products. A relationship of estimated capital requirements and probable returns has been established in this study for a plant of this type. No attempt has been made to evaluate the risks involved in commercial operations. At such time that the project might be constructed and placed in operation, changes in the costs of material, labor, and power may materially affect the profitability aspects of this study. One of the uncertainties involved in the economic evaluation is the cost of mining, handling, and shipping the ores. It is on this basis that the cost of ore delivered at the plant is assumed to be variable at $3, $5, and $7 per net ton (dry basis). For all other costs a plant site at Iligan City, Philip-pine Islands, has been assumed in preparing the economic characteristics for a plant that will process 2,000 tons4/ of ore per day. Results of the study, for the 2,000-ton plant, with all monetary values expressed in terms of United States currency (Philippine peso valued at $0.50), are summarized as follows:

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigations of the three subunits (fig. 1) of the Homestead RARE II area (No. 6291) revealed no evidence of mining activity or mineral deposits in the area. The Iron Dyke Mine, 3 mi (5 km) outside the study area produced ore between 1916 and early 1982 from a volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit in the Permian volcaniclastic Hunsaker Creek Formation of the Seven Devils Group. The Hunsaker Creek Formation does not crop out in the RARE II area, but extends into the area beneath Miocene flows of Columbia River Basalt. The abundant basalt in the area could be used as aggregate or dimension stone, but equivalent deposits exist closer to markets. INTRODUCTION Location and Access The Homestead RARE II area (fig. 1) encompasses 6260 net acres (253U ha), in three units, of the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest in Baker and Wallowa Counties, Oregon. Two small units of 160 and 300 acres (65 and 120 ha) are 5 mi (8 km) north and east of the main study area. Homestead, Oregon, on the Snake River, is about 3 mi (4 km) south of the two small areas, and about 3 mi (4 km) northeast of the main study area. Peripheral access is provided by State Highway 86, U.S. Forest Service Road 39, and ancillary roads and trails.

Existing foundations, adjacent structures and services, in tandem with asymmetric loading, presented particular challenges in the planning, execution and design of the project. The construction methods and temporary works, analysis by the Finite Element method and monitoring carried out are all described.

The heat of formation at 0°C of the intermetallic compound AgMg as a function of composition has been determined by tin-solution calorimetry. In this technique, the heat of formation is determined as the difference in the heat effects, at infinite dilution, on dissolution of the compound and a mixture of its components added alternately to liquid tin from a reference temperature, such as 0°C. The experimental technique and method of calculation have been described elsewhere.' The compound AgMg is a 0 electron compound with a CsCl structure.2 In nonstoichiometric compositions of the compound, atoms of the excess component are substituted on the AgMg lattice.3,4 The homogeneity range is approximately 43 to 52 at. pct Mg at room temperature and 38 to 65 at. pct Mg at 500Oc.2 Single-phase alloys outside the homogeneity range at room temperature can be prepared by quenching. The specimens used in this investigation contained from 39.0 to 54.8 at. pct Mg. They were made available, together with analyses, by the Research Laboratory of the General Electric Co. Metallographic examination of the quenched specimens containing 39.0 and 54.8 at. pct Mg gave no indication of the presence of a precipitated phase. The measured heats of formation are listed in Table I. In a calorimetric run, four to six additions each of a specimen and the corresponding mixture of the components were made. One or two calorimetric runs were carried out with each composition depending on the amount of samples available. The limits stated in the table represent the experimental precision and not the absolute accuracy of the measurements. Thermodynamic investigations of the compound AgMg have been made by Trzebiatowski and Terpilowski 5 and Kachi.6,7 The heats of formation at 500°C derived from the combined electromotive-force values of these investigators8 are more exothermic than the heats of formation at 0°C reported here, Fig. 1. The differences cannot be explained by the difference in temperature. This is shown by the published heat capacity of the stoichiometric compound, which obeys the Kopp-Neumann rule from 0" to 500oC.9 The heats of formation derived from equilibrium data are generally considered to be less accurate than those determined by calorimetric methods because small errors in the change of the equilibrium values with temperature have a large effect on the calculated value of the heat of formation. The heats of formation derived from the combined published electromotive-force values reach a maximum at 56.0 at. pct Mg.8 Kachi reports a maximum of -4.7 kcal per g-atom at the stoichiometric composition.7 The present results also indicate a maximum at or near the stoichio metric composition, Fig. 1.

THERE has been little investigation of the gold-germanium binary alloys. Haughton1 does not mention any work on the system. In a review article commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the discovery of germanium, E. Einecke2 mentioned a gold germanium eutectic at 24 atomic per cent Ge (10.4 weight per cent) melting at 359°C., but did not give the source of his information. From measurements of electrical conductivity, J. 0. Linde3 estimated that at least o.6 weight per cent germanium is soluble in gold. The recent availability of germanium in this country in commercial quantities has led to interest in its properties and its alloys. This study is part of a program of investigation on germanium alloys; work on ternary alloys involving germanium and gold will be reported later. In this investigation, the composition and melting point of the Au-Ge eutectic reported by Einecke has been found to be substantially correct. Eutectic composition has been placed at 12,0 per cent germanium, however. An alloy of 10.4 per cent Ge, Einecke's value, was found to have a few gold dendrites in it. The eutectic temperature has been determined as 356.0 ± 0.5°C., slightly less than the temperature of 359°C reported by Einecke. The liquidus curves and the solid solubility of germanium in gold have been determined, and are shown in Fig. I. MATERIALS AND ALLOYING The germanium used in this investigation was prepared by the Eagle-Picher Lead Co. from pure germanium oxide, by reduction in clay crucibles with sodium cyanide. The regulus is quite pure, assaying over 99.9 per cent Ge. High-purity gold obtained from Handy and Harmon was used. Alloying was carried out in graphite crucibles in an atmosphere of purified hydrogen. The temperature was brought up to 1050° to 1100°C., and the metal was allowed to freeze in the crucible. Prepared in this way, the gold dendrites in hypoeutectic alloys were somewhat segregated at the bottom and sides of the ingot, and on the hypereutectic side the lighter primary germanium tended to gather at the top. Most of the alloys were made from virgin metal. Low-germanium heats were made by alloying pure gold with the eutectic. Melting losses were consistently a few milligrams or less, and the composition could safely be taken from the intended analysis. The 30 per cent and 50 per cent germanium heats for thermal analysis were made in part from remelted higher germanium heats, and they may be off composition as much as one per cent. Because of the high cost of materials, the weight of heats for thermal analysis were 15 to 20 grams and heats for metallographic, X-ray, and hardness specimens were 2 to 4 grams.

The drill sampling and evaluation of the Piney River ilmenite property was carried out during the early part of 1944 by E. J. Longyear Co., using the company's standard core-drill outfits to complete 44 holes to an average depth of IIO ft., from which were collected 1100 samples. The Piney River ilmenite-apatite lode is 25 miles north of Lynchburg, in Nelson and Amherst Counties, Virginia (Fig. I). Its elevation is about 900 ft. above sea level and it lies in the old pre-Cambrian complex of crystalline rocks that make up the Piedmont physiographic province lying east of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The terrain is gently rolling and well watered and is drained by the Piney and Tye Rivers, which are tributary to the James. Geology The Piney River ore body comprises the upper, weathered part of a tabular basic rock, which occurs in a large area of granite-gneiss. The section containing profitable ore is about 3000 ft. long. It is separated naturally by thinning, into northeastern and southwestern segments with widths of 300 and 100 ft. respectively. The dip averages 4.5° southeast but steepens locally (Figs. 2 and 3). The unaltered rock is an even, granular mixture of feldspar, ilmenite, and apatite, to which Watson1 gave the name Nelson-ite. The decomposed ore body, which is now being exploited by open cut, is a yellowish clay material in which black ilmenite and glassy apatite are the only conspicuous minerals. An economically important structural feature of the deposit is a banding of minerals coinciding with the dip and strike of the dike. This is more pronounced in the footwall of the northeastern part of the intrusive, where there is also a higher than average concentration of ilmenite. According to Watson,' the TiO2 content of the Nelsonites of this region ranges from 10 to 42 per cent, while P205 varies from 4 to 15 per cent. It is inexpedient at present to disclose exact metal content of the Piney River ore body; suffice it to say that the average tenor lies well within the extremes noted by Watson. Sampling Methods and Procedure During a preliminary inspection of the ore body, Longyear engineers surmised that because of its soft, clayey character, drill sampling would yield little core, therefore they made all possible preparations to procure accurate samples of the drill cuttings, or sludge. The first requisite in obtaining representative drill cuttings is to secure their full recovery. I have been asked to speak today on the topic of Project Finance in the Mining Industry. Through this presentation, I hope to give you a broad outline of the concept of project finance. The first half of the presentation covers the principles involved in project finance and the second half moves to aspects more specific to the mining industry. I have worked for 3 years at Rothschild Australia. Rothschild provide finance for projects in the mining industry, world wide. We finance both large and small projects, with facilities varying from $2m to $100m.

Comparative data from ASTM method of test E-162 and large-scale trials in the Experimental Mine show that the flame-spread quality of brattice cloth and other ventilation control materials can effectively be evaluated by either method. Materials having a flame spread index of 25 or less, as determined by the simpler and more economical laboratory test ASTM E-162, do not present a serious fire hazard when used in coal mines.

Static tests give a measure of the balance between acid-producing and acid-neutralising mineral components in a material, while kinetic tests determine acid generation and neutralisation over a long period. Drill-core samples from the amphibolite and gneiss host rocks of the Stratoni lead-zinc sulphide deposit in Greece and mine/mill waste samples from Stratoni and Olympias were examined by the standard acid base accounting, BCR and net acid production tests. Mineralogical data on the materials and resulting residues were used to illustrate the differences between the methods and establish their ranges of applicability. BCR seems to simulate most closely the conditions prevailing during generation of acid mine drainage but is time-consuming and requires elaborate equipment. Previously we reported crushing or grinding crystalline silica results in silica-based free radicals on the particulate surface which can generate hydroxyl radicals in aqueous solution (1). Now we find that freshly ground silica is more cytotoxic to and a more potent activator of alveolar macrophages than similarly sized aged silica. Since the United States Department of Labor estimates that over 1.25 million American workers may be exposed to freshly ground crystalline silica arid nearly 60,000 may be at risk of developing some degree of silica-based occupational lung disease, then this is hardly a trivial problem. Occupations of concern include workers who come in contact with silica including miners of soft and hard minerals, stone quarry workers, glass workers and even millers who stone grind flour. Acute silicosis is manifested by inflammation, alveolar lipo-proteinosis, and the rapid development of respiratory disability that depending on the dose of silica can produce chronic silicosis which takes 20 - 40 years to develop. It is demonstrated by the appearance of concentric hyalinized nodular lesions and progressive development of dyspnea(3). Certainly the free radicals produced on the surface of freshly ground crystalline silica play a most important role in producing the acute and chronic symptoms of silicosis. When respirable-size freshly- ground silica (0.1 -- 5 microns in diameter) enters the deep alveolar spaces in the lung and contacts an aqueous environment, hydroxyl radical are generated and cellular damage is bound to occur. We have found that freshly ground silica can cause lipid peroxidation and lysis of erythrocytes(1). The objective of this investigation was to further elucidate the enhanced toxicity of freshly ground versus aged silica. It can be deduced from the data that not only is freshly ground silica more cytotoxic to alveolar macrophages but it is a more potent stimulant of these phagocytes. However the mere characterization of toxicity is not entirely helpful if there is not a useful means to detoxify the cause of the damage. We have identified an aqueously soluble substance that can be used in high dilution to detoxify the SiO(•) and Si(•) type of free radicals. This is the organosilane known as Prosil 28 (R). We have found that coating of the freshly ground silica can effectively reduce its toxicity. The importance of this observation is that such a coating could be used with water cooled drills. This may partially detoxify silica at the point of generation of the free radical, i.e., the generation of the fresh silica dust itself. Such a coating could be used in great dilution 1:103 or 1:104. The coating would be long lasting, inexpensive and should be non-toxic because of the great dilution.
