A series of composite alloys containing a high volume of NiAl, Ni3Ah or CoAl, bonded with 0 to 40 vol pct of a ductile metal phase, were prepared by powder blending and hot extrusion. The binder metals were of four types: pure nickel or cobalt, near saturated solid solutions of aluminum in nickel and cobalt, type 316 stainless steel, and niobium. Sound extrusions were obtained in almost all instances. Studied or measured were the following: interaction between the alunzinides and the binders, room-temperature modulus of rupture values, 1500° and 1800°F stress rupture properties, hardness, structure, and oxidation resistance. Stable structures can be produced for 1800°F exposure, with interesting high-temperature strength and good high-temperature ductility. Oxidation resistance was excellent. A large number of experimental investigations have been made of the role of structure on the properties of cermets and composite materials. Gurland,1 Kreimer et al.,2 and Gurland and Bardzil3 have indicated the preferred particle size in carbide base cermets to be about 1 µ, with a hard phase content of 60 to 80 vol pct. The optimum ductile binder thickness was noted to be 0.3 to 0.6 µ.1 Complete separation of the hard phase particles by the binder is important in reducing the severity of brittle fracture.' The purpose of the present study was to produce structures comparable to the conventional cermets, using a series of relatively close-packed intermetal-lic compounds rather than carbides as the refractory hard phase, and to study the effects of binder content and composition on both high- and low-temperature properties. The selected intermetallic compounds were particularly of interest because of the potential they offered in yielding room-temperature ductility. The highly symmetrical structures are known to possess high-temperature ductility and room-temperature toughness. Based on a ductile binder, the alloys were prepared by the powder-metallurgy route to avoid melting and subsequent alloying of the matrix, and were extruded at relatively low temperatures. It was expected that the composite alloy would retain useful ductility. In contrast, infiltration and high-temperature sintering led to alloying of the matrix and to decreased ductility. The systems Ni-A1 and Co-A1 were selected for this study. In the Ni-A1 system the compounds NiA1, having an ordered bcc B2 structure, and Ni3Al(?1), having an ordered fcc L12 structure, were chosen. In the system Co-A1 the intermetallic compound CoAl with an ordered bcc B2 structure was used. ALLOY PREPARATION The intermetallic compounds, see Table I, were prepared by using master alloys of Ni-A1 and CO-A1, with additions of either cobalt or nickel to achieve the desired compositions. The master alloy in crushed, homogenized form, was melted with pure nickel or cobalt in an inert atmosphere, cold copper crucible, nonconsumable tungsten arc furnace. The resultant intermetallic compounds were homogenized at 2192°C in argon, crushed, and dry ball-milled in a stainless mill to -100 and -325 mesh for the Ni-A1 compounds and to -325 mesh for the CoAl compound. Finer fractions were separated for some of the composite alloys. Several ductile binders were utilized. These included Inco B nickel, 5µ ; pure cobalt, 5 µ, from Sher-ritt Gordon Mines, Ltd.; fine (-325 mesh) niobium hydride powder; fine (15 µ) type 316 stainless-steel powder; and near-saturated Ni-A1 and Co-A1 solid-solution alloys, also in fine powder form. The niobium hydride was decomposed above about 700°C in processing of the compacts in vacuum to produce niobium powder. The Ni-7.1 pct A1 and the Co-5.3 pct A1 solid-solution alloys were prepared from pure nickel or cobalt and pure aluminum by nonconsumable tungsten arc melting under an inert atmosphere. The ingots were homogenized, lathe-turned to fine chips, and dry ball-milled in air to -325 mesh powder. These solid-solution alloys are designated NiSS and CoSS; see Table I. Subsequently the hard and ductile phases were dry ball-milled as a blend. Experiments clearly established the need to coat the hard particles with the ductile binder to optimize subsequent hot compaction by extrusion. Ordinary dry mixing usually resulted in nonhomogeneous alloys which were quite brittle. Conventional cermets are consolidated by liquid phase sinteiing or infiltration, which resulis in undesirable and uncontrolled alloying of the binder phase. For this study, a loose (unsintered) powder-extrusion process was emploved, minimizing reactions between binder and hard particle, thereby permitting much greater control of composition and structure. Screening efficiency models developed to date rely almost exclusively on empirical formulas based upon large amounts of acquired operating data. A screening model was developed using a combination of empirical coefficients and explicit mathematical expressions which quantify screening phenomena. A series of screening tests was run to supply data for purposes of correlation and empirical coefficient evaluation. The model has been implemented as a digital computer program. The validity of the modeling procedure has been established by laboratory testing. Results generated by the model have been used to compile an applications handbook, which can be used to predict screening performance in lieu of using the computer program.

Two of the aluminum-alloy systems previously studied-the alumi-num-titanium and the aluminum-chromium-exhibit a peritectic reaction at the extreme aluminum end of the diagram. Preliminary work indi-cated that the aluminum-zirconium and certain other aluminum systems were similar in this respect. The present paper, the twentieth of a series from the Aluminum Research Laboratories, reports the results of a recent investigation of equilibrium relations in aluminum-zirconium alloys of high purity, which confirm the preliminary observations. PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS There has been only one investigation of the aluminum end of the aluminum-zirconium system. Sykes1 prepared and studied alloys containing 0 to 70 per cent Zr. The lowering of the freezing point of aluminum by the addition of zirconium was found to be very little, if any (less than 2°C.). He placed the solid solubility of zirconium in aluminum at room temperature between 0.57 and 0.97 per cent. A few other investigators have attempted to determine the com-position of the intermetallic compounds occurring in this system. Hönigschmid2 obtained the compound ZrAl3 as a by-product during the preparation of ZrSi2. He made no attempt to prepare other aluminum-zir-conium compounds. Weiss and Newmann3 prepared an alloy by heating aluminum with a double fluoride of potassium and zirconium. When this alloy was treated consecutively with caustic soda and hydrochloric acid, there was a residue, which contained approximately 72 per cent Zr and 28 per cent Al (Zr3Al4). Marden and Rich4 prepared an alloy in the same way, treated it with caustic soda, and obtained a residue of silver-white crystals, which contained 70 per cent Zr and 30 per cent Al (Zr3Al4).

EXPANSION initiated during and after the war has placed industrial plants in new areas and increased reduction and manufacturing facilities in communities already established. With added expansion interest has grown in possible area contamination from waste products. Evolved flue waste contains many chemical contaminants that may or may not cause concern; however, atmospheric pollution has always been a problem to industrial communities. For some time effects attributed to small quantities of compounds of fluorine in various waste gases have been studied by industrial, medical, agricultural, and associated interests.1'2 Aside from an article by Churchill, Rowley, and Martin in 1948," little has been published on the subject of fluorine in coal except by foreign investigators. The first indication of fluorine compounds in coal was noted in England in 1934 by R. Lessing,4,5 who found that the presence of fluorine in Midland and West County coals was definitely established by etching of glass and by severe corrosion of porcelain fillings in a gas works scrubber. Etching of glass in a direct contact annealing kiln initiated research, and in 1944 four papers were published by H. E. Crossley,6-9 giving results of investigations of fluorine in coal of England by the Fuel Research Board, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. These investigations studied methods of determining fluorine, the quantities present in various coal deposits, the geographical distribution of fluorine in British coals, occurrence of fluorine in minerals associated with coal, amounts of fluorine compared to other constituents of coal, the nature of fluorine compounds, and industrial significance of fluorine in coal. It was shown that British coals contain from 5 to 200 ppm of fluorine, which is probably present as fluorapatite [Ca10F2(PO4)6], often written as [3Ca3P2O8.CaF2]. The fluorapatite is intimately associated with shale in some coals and can often be separated from these coals along with the shales. H. E. Crossley8 also reported no correlation between the amounts of chlorine, sulfur, or ash and the amount of fluorine in different coals. He found, however, a relationship between the content of fluorine and phosporus in many British coals. Thus it should be possible to anticipate likely fluorine-rich coals from existing data giving phosphorus content. "Modern microprocessor systems make it possible to use several variables to anticipate changes in the process and to react with responses before upsets can be magnified by the process or by control action.Through tighter control, ""insurance"" can be eliminated from process set points without affecting product quality. In actual operation with a traveling grate furnace this control philosophy has produced savings of up to 20% in fuel consumption and 8% in fan power usage while producing a more consistent quality product.IntroductionA straight grate indurator, or pelletizing machine, consists of a continuo us moving train of pallets on which a feed stream of unfired, ""green"" pellets is deposited on a hearth layer o f fired pellets. This bed moves through several zones in the furnace where it is dried, preheated, fired and cooled by streams of gases which are pulled or blown through the bed by a series o f large process fan s. Control systems for straight grate plants are designed to maintain gas flow through the machine to ensure that sufficient time and heat are available to raise the temperature of the entire green bed to 1300°C where hematite bonding take s place.For the pas t two year s a new approach to control systems using microprocessor-based instrumentation has been designed and tested in an existing plant with a straight grate indurating furnace processing magnetite ore. The purpose of the test was to determine the most efficient operating setpoints for all levels of production above fifty per cent of design capacity. Through a combination of feed forward control, variable setpoints and additional loops, significant savings have been realized. Thus far the project has taught us much about control systems design and operation, energy utilization, and the process itself."

This study evaluates selective environmental impacts of two distinct in situ mining techniques. In situ leaching of uranium, porphyry copper and native copper and in situ borehole (slurry) mining of uranium, sandstone, and pebble phosphate ores are the techniques and minerals investigated. The potential impacts onsite in the desert southwest (porphyry copper), Michigan (native copper), Texas and Wyoming (uranium), and Florida and North Carolina (phosphate) are addressed and discussed. The study emphasizes those impacts which are unique to in situ solution leaching and borehole slurry mining. Impacts which are characteristic of all construction projects in the general geographical areas investigated, such as socioeconomic effects on surrounding communities and site-specific impacts, such as rare and endangered species, are beyond the scope of this study. For each of the in situ processes and associated ores investigated, the physical and chemical characteristics of the systems are described, the toxicity of the leaching solutions are presented, and the potential impacts on the environment are developed.

The Bureau of Mines investigated separating HF from HF-SiF4-H2O mixtures by passing the mixed gases through a sodium fluoride slurry in an airlift scrubber and forming a mixed precipitate of NaHF2 and Na2SiF6. The oven-dried precipitate was thermally dissociated in two stages. The first stage was carried out at 400° C and dissociated NaHF2 to NaF and HF. Condensation and analysis of the evolved HF proved it to be 97 to 99 weight-percent HF containing 0.79 to 0.99 weight-percent H2O and 10 to 93 ppm silicon. The second stage was carried out at 700° C and dissociated Na2SiF6 to NaF (for recycle) and SiF4. The quantity of HF recovered from gaseous HF-H2O-air mixtures decreased with increasing relative H2O concentrations. Air was beneficial when scrubbing extremely dilute wet HF gases. At HF partial pressures of 0.24 and 0.013 mm Hg in the scrubber entrance gases, HF partial pressures of 6.2 x 10-4 and 9 x 10-6 mm Hg were obtained, respectively, in the scrubber exit gases. Scrubber efficiencies were 99.7 and 99.3 percent.

In order to mitigate the effects of climate change, our society must be able to drastically reduce its CO2 emissions. As the metallurgical industry is a considerable contributor to these emissions, new greener technologies must be invented and developed. One option could be the direct production of metals from oxides using renewable electricity. The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of using high-temperature molten oxide electrolysis (MOE) for iron and ferrochrome production. FactSage™, ver 8.2 (by Thermfact Ltd and GTT-Technologies) was utilised for estimating a feasible equilibrium electrolyte composition, and the experiments were conducted at 1550–1580°C in conical alumina crucibles with iridium wire as the cathode and platinum wire as the anode. The sources of iron and chromium were either pure FeO powder or industrial chromite pellets. Voltage was applied to the electrolysis cell for 6 hrs and the resulting current was measured, along with oxygen concentration in the off-gas line. The electrolyte comprised of SiO2, Al2O3, MgO and CaO. First, the effect of FeO concentration on iron reduction efficiency was investigated using only pure oxide powders as starting materials. The results indicated that 10 wt per cent FeO mixed with the electrolyte resulted in more efficient iron reduction compared to 20 wt per cent. In further experiments, industrial chromite pellets were ground and mixed with the CaO-free electrolyte. Iron and chromium reduction efficiencies were higher when approximately 19 wt per cent of the total sample mass consisted of pellets compared to increasing the pellet amount to 37 wt per cent. Generally, the chromium solubility in the liquid electrolyte was relatively low, and most of the chromium was confined to the spinel solid solution, from where its dissolution to the liquid electrolyte was very slow, resulting in slow reduction kinetics. For larger scale applications, economically more viable electrode materials should be investigated.

In an earlier paper the permeability character of Mo-0.5 pct Ti to hydrogen was described.' It was shown that this alloy is a more effective barrier to the passage of hydrogen than previously studied systems, i.e., copper,2 nickel,3 and several stainless steels.4 The permeability of Hastelloy B to hydrogen was investigated as a material having promising high-temperature structural properties which might have a low permeability to hydrogen. The general theory of permeation has been previously discussed,' and here only a summary of the more important results are given. It is found that except for very thin membranes, at low temperature, permeation of a gas through a metal barrier is determined by the rate of diffusion of the gas through the crystal lattice of the specimen, and that for hydrogen and the common diatomic gases, this passage involves dissociated particles as the diffusing species. The rate of permeation for hydrogen is therefore proportional to the square root of the pressure. It has also been found that the rate of permeation is inversely proportional to the thickness of the barrier. The apparatus used in this investigation was fundamentally the same as that employed in previous studies,' except that several simplifications result in the case of Hastelloy, since oxidation at the temperatures investigated is no longer a problem and welding of the specimen is relatively easy. The preparation and crystallization behavior of glass-ceramics were investigated with differential ther- mal analysis (DTA), physical and mechanical properties testing, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The optimal flexural strength exceeding 90 MPa were achieved in firing temperature zone of 1170–1200 °C. Anorthite (CaAl Si O ) and diopside [Ca(Mg, Fe)Si O ] can be identified in the 2 2 8 2 6 glass-ceramicsandCaAl Si O isthepredominantcrystalphase.Fineparticleswith 2 2 8 average diameter of 200 nm distributed uniformly in the glass-ceramics. Granular crystals are intensively interconnected and constituted a crystal skeleton soaked in theglassmatrix.LeachingtoxicitytestdetectedCr(VI)of0.016and0.010 mg/Lof the water-quenched frit and glass-ceramics, respectively. The effectiveness of a loader-mounted fan on diesel vehicles combined with natural convection for ventilation of a dead heading (the patented Janelid system) was investigated experimentally. The results were obtained using CO2 as a tracer gas in a 1/4 scale model heading. Buoyant forces were scaled to establish similarity with full scale. For a loader moving in a typical load-haul-dump cycle, the loader-mounted fan reduced the tracer gas concentration by 26 percent compared with a reduction of 32 percent for a jet fan of four times the flow capacity.

It was first pointed out in 1934 by Gaudin (1) that the "oily" oxidation product of the alkyl xanthate ion-dialkyl dixanthogen, might be the "active flotation agent" on sulphide minerals and there have been a number of studies supporting this hypothesis (2,3,4). However, all of these studies have relied largely on electrochemical evidence. Galena, being a semiconductor, may be used as an electrode in aqueous solution and it was shown that ethyl xanthate ion does not adsorb with charge transfer in the absence of oxygen unless the potential of the galena surface is above -100 mv versus the hydrogen electrode (H2 E). At this potential the galena surface is slightly hydrophobic but does not become strongly hydrophobic unless the potential is raised to 210 mv (versus H2 E). It is suggested that, at potentials of 210 mv or above, ethyl xanthate ions are oxidised to diethyl dixanthogen and that chemisorption of oxygen raises the galena surface to this potential. On the other hand, examination of xanthated galena surfaces by chemical or physical methods (5,6,7) has failed to detect dixanthogen and it has been shown that dixanthogen may be reduced to lead xanthate at a lead sulphide surface. It was suggested by Leja and Poling (5) that, as dixanthogen is a neutral molecule it would not be repelled by the negatively charged galena surface so that the adsorption was envisaged as taking place through homogeneous oxidation of the xanthate ion to dixanthogen, adsorption and reduction of the dixanthogen to a chemisorbed lead xanthate species. In paper I of this series (11) it was shown that the thiosulphate ion, which forms on galena surfaces in slurries at the pH normally used for flotation, will reduce dixanthogen. There is, therefore, the impasse that the electrochemical evidence requires that xanthate ion be oxidised to dixanthogen at the galena surface while the chemical evidence shows that the reverse reaction takes place.

Recent investigations in the United States and in other countries have produced considerable information on the nature and occurrence of minor elements in coal. The possibility of recovering certain elements, particularly germanium and uranium, from coal ash and other coal products has received considerable attention. Some flue dusts are potential sources of germanium, and certain lignite deposits are potential sources of uranium, but industrial recovery of these elements has been limited to small quantities for technical and economic reasons. Considering the large amount of coal mined annually, a small percentage of a rare element may have industrial significance if an economical method of recovery can be developed. In 1944 information on the occurrence of rare elements in coal was reviewed in Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 669 (46).3 This report is a revision of that paper with the view of summarizing published information available for United States coals, and pertinent information concerning coals of other countries. Selected references from the original paper are retained. New references do not include all preliminary reports when more permanent literature describing complete projects is available. Consequently, the list of references should not be considered complete.

"BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF GRINDING CIRCUITCrushed ore at -5/ 16 in. is delivered by a conveyor system from the crushing plant to two 1250 ton fine ore bins. The ore is transferred from each bin by a 30 in. feeder conveyor belt, operated by a Link Belt P.I. V. (variable speed) drive, to a 24 in. conveyor that feeds the 8 x 10 Allis Chalmers rod mill.The rod mill discharges to a common mill discharge pump box. Three 6 x 6 SRL pumps are employed to pump the combined mill discharge pulp to a common distributor box which distributes the feed to two of the three Kreb D lSB cyclones in each of the two banks at a hydraulic pressure of 6 psi.The cyclone overflow at a specific gravity of 1. 25 (i.e. 32% solids) is transferred by gravity to two revolving chip screens for wood chip removal and from there to a pump box. Two 5 x 5 SRL pumps feed the pulp to the thickeners. The underflow from the cyclones is fed to two 8 x 8 Allis Chalmers ball mills which discharge to the common mill discharge pump box. Thus, a closed circuit is formed between the ball mills and their respective bank of cyclones. The circulating load as most recently calculated is 262%."

Mine drainage and mine reclamation are topics of major interest to the mining industry, federal and local governments, and the general public. This publication and its companion three volumes are the proceedings of a conference held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, April 24-29, 1994. There were twelve sessions (69 papers) that dealt with mine drainage, including modeling, geochemistry, prediction, treatment, control strategies, characterization, hydrology, and case studies. These sessions comprise volumes 1 and 2. The six sessions (34 papers) that dealt with reclamation and revegetation of disturbed lands are included in volume 3. Volume 4 includes the six sessions (34 papers) that dealt with such topical issues as fires at abandoned mine sites, subsidence, hydrology, mine wastes, and policy. Poster session presentations are represented by 49 papers and 92 abstracts that have been placed in the back of volumes 2, 3, and 4, consistent with the subject of that volume.

[The Bureau of Mines has conducted a field hydraulic fracturing experiment to determine the preferential orientation of induced fractures in oil shale at a depth of about 400 feet in the Green River Basin of Wyoming. The hydraulic fracturing treatment was performed by injecting extremely viscous water-base gel and 8- to 12-mesh sand into the oil shale through straddle packers set in an impermeable section of smooth-walled, 6-1/4-inch-diameter open hole. An impression packer proved that a horizontal fracture, which has an average width of about 1/2 inch at the borehole, was induced. A corehole drilled 100 feet from the fractured well intersected the fracture and confirmed its horizontal orientation. Because a horizontal fracture was successfully initi¬ated, it is inferred that the creation of multiple, closely spaced horizontal fractures may be feasible in Green River Basin oil shale.]

As one authority has put it, ""The cream of the small high-grade, easy-to-mine ore deposits of this world have been consumed and mining is becoming more and more an industry of very large scale, complex operations. It has already become in most countries a capital intensive industry and its problems, scientific, technical and economic, are growing in difficulty."""

Electrical trailing cable used to power coal mining machinery is frequently damaged in usage because of tensile strain or crushing effect of mining machines running over the cable. One of the repair problems is finding the exact location of a short or open in this cable so it may be spliced or otherwise repaired. The U.S. Bureau of Mines and FMC corporation signed Contract No. H0 122011 in August, 1971, to develop instrumentation for finding faults in coal mine trailing cable. This report describes performance of several existing instruments as trailing cable fault locators and also construction details and performance records of several cable fault location instruments that FMC designed, built and tested as part of this project.

EMR Microwave has developed several unique processes for the pretreatment of refractory gold and copper ores. This report describes a recent large scale pilot project involving a carbonaceous gold-bearing whole ore. Pilot plant testwork conducted jointly by EMR and Bateman Engineering Inc. has shown that 90+% cyanide soluble gold recovery is obtainable from refractory (sulphide and carbonaceous) Carlin, Nevada gold ores. Typical cyanide soluble gold recoveries for untreated material is 20%. AC energy consumption was found to be between 58.l kWh/ton and 15.5 kWh/t for an assumed heat recovery of 50% and 80% respectively. The plant was operated at reduced temperatures ( 400°C) from previous testwork on similar ore at 600°-700°C.
