Data obtained from a copper mine were used in a comparative study of the reserve estimates generated by applying geostatistical methods to surface borehole data, underground core drilling results and assay values from chip sampling. Global estimation of the deposit performed by kriging of the low-density sampling data from the surface boreholes did not provide reliable results, but could identify the potentially mineralised zones. The reserve generated from core drilling results correlated well with that estimated from chip sample data and with that estimated by the conventional methods used at the mine. A satisfactory reserve evaluation could, therefore, be obtained by kriging of the data from the underground core drilling alone, provided that a systematic sampling procedure was adopted. Estimates based on chip sampling information could be used as a check, which could avoid the current practice of chip sampling of most of the mine workings. The aim should be to develop a semi-variogram for the deposit, which could be used to estimate the reserves by kriging

Collins Radio Company, through this contract with the Bureau of Mines, has conducted a System Study of Coal Mine Communi¬cations. The program was a three phase program to establish a data base, perform communication system analysis and optimi¬zation, and prepare equipment specifications to be included in this final report. At the start of establishing a data base both a knowledge of mine communication and coal mines in general was obtained. Communication system requirements and constraints were determined along with a survey of current and potential mine communication equipment. An investigation was completed concerning theoretical LF and VLF propagation characteristics, and UHF propagation tests were conducted in a working coal mine. Different mines were contacted and on-site surveys completed with respect to coal mine communication requirements.

The Bureau of Mines determined the effect of slag additives on copper solubility and the distribution of typical impurity elements between copper-iron matte and silica-saturated fayalite (iron silicate) slag at 1,250° C, in CO-C02 atmospheres with 10 pct S02. Small additions (<10 pct) of CaO, A1203, and MgO were shown to decrease copper solubility in the slag. Additions of CaO increased the solubility of bismuth and tellurium in the slag at lower matte grades. Al 20 3 additions decreased the solubility of tellurium in the slag, but increased that of bismuth at lower matte grades. A1203 additions increased the solubility of both at lower matte grades. With no additives, matte grade did not affect the solubility of bismuth in slags, whereas increasing matte grade resulted in a slight decrease in the tellurium solubility in slag. Additions of CaO or As203 alone to the slag increased selenium and arsenic distribution to the matte, but had little or no effect on antimony distribution; whereas small MgO additions decreased antimony distribution to the matte but had no effect on arsenic and selenium distribution. In slags with no additives, selenium distribution to the matte increased with increasing matte grade, while that of antimony decreased and that of arsenic was unchanged.

Stope layout optimization is an important feature of underground mining that maximizes the economic value of the project while taking mining limits into account. The large number of parameters and constraints makes it difficult to obtain the optimum condition. Several algorithms have been created to address these problems using a variety of methods. However, the circulating method has not explicitly included stope dimension stability analysis, resulting in a solution that is not stability-proven, which can result in a suboptimal solution. This study integrates the Mathews stability graph into the stope optimization algorithm so that the optimized stope layout considers stability conditions directly through an assessment of the available geomechanical data within the block model. The proposed algorithm is validated through a case study of a synthetic block model created by considering variations in grade and the geomechanical conditions of the rock. Furthermore, several scenarios are created to compare the performance of the algorithm that applies variations in stope sizes with the common case study of stope sizes that remain fixed. A more detailed assessment is also conducted on each final stope layout wall to ensure the successful application of stability analysis in the proposed algorithm through back analysis on the Mathews stability graph. The optimization results show that all walls in the final stope layout fall into the stable condition. Also, the proposed algorithm is also capable of maintaining the project’s economic value. Ultimately, the proposed algorithm can be deemed applicable and suitable for use in the initial stages of mining as a comprehensive assessment of the optimal stope layout, taking into account the stability conditions of the stope.

"INTRODUCTION The Eva Tanguay property is in Crittenden County, Kentucky, about 1 mile south or the village of Mexico, and can be reached from Marion, the County seat, by travellng south on State Highway 91 for 6.8 miles and then turning southwest on State Highway 70 and traveling 2 miles farther.Although the property lies between the Huffaw and Pigmy properties, which together have produced 200,000 tons of fluorspar ore, production from the Eva Tanguay has been estimed at only 1,000 tons. Geological factors on the property indicated the likelihood of an ore occurrence, and the author examined the property in April 1944. Shortly thereafter, the U.S. Geological Survey wrote a report on the property, which was not published. A drilling program was initiated by the Bureau of Mines November 1, 1944, and continued until eight holes totaling 3,137.5 feet were drilled.The holes showed that the Tubb fault system on the Eva Tanguay property is composed of three members, all of which contained commercial ore. The line dividing the Haffaw and Tanguay properties crosses the vein outcrops, causing a part of the ore indicated to be on each property.The mineral rights, which are leased by Robert Frazer of Marion, are owned by Mrs. O. S. Denny and W. C. Bohn, both of Marion."

Elemental sulfur was stockpiled at the Mount Polley Mine for use as a source of sulfuric acid as part of research into leaching copper from oxide ores, but the project did not proceed beyond an initial pilot- scale evaluation. Since placement, the sulfur has oxidized and some sulfuric acid leached into the underlying rock. The reaction of the acid with these underlying materials has been studied as part of an evaluation of the effects of leachate from the pile. The rock underneath the sulfur pile is composed dominantly of primary and secondary alumino-silicates with less than 1% carbonate (calcite) and iron sulfide (pyrite). In its unaltered condition, the rock is classified as non-acid generating. Conceptually, it was expected the sulfuric acid would be neutralized by the rock to varying degrees resulting in a series of pH-controlled weathering fronts progressing from leached near the contact with the sulfur pile (pH <3), to active neutralization by silicates (pH 4–5), to active neutralization by carbonates (pH >7). The rocks underneath the pile were sampled to determine the extent to which the rocks had reacted and their long-term stability after removal of the acid source. INTRODUCTION When rock is blasted and excavated to facilitate mining ore, it is typically placed and stored on the surface in piles. The resulting drainage may have a neutral to basic pH (i.e., non-acidic drainage) or a low pH (i.e., acid rock drainage, ARD) depending on the mineralogy of the rock being stored in the piles. Acid- base accounting (ABA) can be used to characterise the two types of rock: potentially acidic drainage generating (PAG) and not potentially acidic drainage generating (NAG) (Price, 2009). According to Price (2009), NAG is defined as having an excess of neutralization potential (NP) in the rock in the form of calcium carbonate-like minerals when compared to acid potential (AP), i.e., a Neutralization Potential Ratio (NP/AP = NPR) greater than 2.0, whereas PAG is classified as having an excess of AP (i.e., an NPR less than 1.0). This is a conservative estimate and may be slightly modified depending on the mineralogy at specific mine sites. Rock with an NPR of 1–2 is also capable of generating acid (Price, 2009) and, depending on the mineralogy, may also be classified as PAG. Drainage from PAG material can generate acid immediately, or many years after it has been exposed to surface conditions. Disposal techniques depend on the category (i.e., NAG or PAG) and reactivity of the rock stored in the piles.

"Fine mineral particles are difficult to process by flotation because of their low collision efficiencies with air bubbles. Decreasing air bubble size and increasing mineral particle size through flocculation are the most common approaches to improve flotation efficiencies. Herein we demonstrate that nanoparticle flotation collectors can be engineered to selectively induce fine mineral particle aggregation and promote flotation.Flotation tests of clean fine pentlandite (Pn) and Clarabelle Mill (CBM) rock tails and pyrrhotite (Po) tails that contained significant amount of fine pentlandite have confirmed that the nanoparticles can serve as both collectors and selective flocculants for fine pentlandite. In the case of clean fine Pn, the nanoparticle collectors virtually can float almost all Pn fines. Scoping tests on CBM tails have shown significant improvement in nickel recovery. Addition of nanoparticles as a flotation aid can recover 20% of the nickel contained in the rock tails and 40% of the Pn contained in the Po tails compared to current mill operations giving 0% nickel recovery from rock tails and no Pn selectivity from Po tails. Ongoing work includes attempts to identify optimal strategies for employing nanoparticles in fines flotation.IntroductionFine particle flotation is an industry-wide challenge in mineral processing. Fine mineral particles are difficult to process by flotation because fine particles have low mass and thus low momentum, which results in their low collision efficiency with air bubbles (Dai, Fornasiero, & Ralston, 1999). In addition, fine particles have not only high specific surface area but also more active surface area, which causes high reagent consumption. For base metal sulphide minerals, particle size between 10 µm and 70 µm is a typical range where high flotation recoveries can be achieved with conventional flotation chemistry and acceptable cell residence times. For pentlandite, the flotation recoveries decrease sharply when the particle size is below 10 µm and hydraulic entrainment is the dominant mechanism, giving recoveries proportional to water recovery and no Pn enrichment. This paper presents the methodology for final wall-controlled blasting utilized at the Grasberg Mine. The resulting optimized slopes representa14%and17% increase to bench face angle (BFA) and inter-ramp slope angle (ISA), respectively. The corresponding increase in both copper and gold recovery was more than 40% greater than forecast for each material. The Grasberg open pit mine is located in the remote jungle province of West Papua Indonesia, at an elevation of 4,200 meters(13,780 ft).With a diameter of approximately 3.5km(2.2 mi), anddepthover1.2km(0.7 mi),P.T. Freeport Indonesia (PTFI)has mined billions of tons of rock from one of the world’s largest gold and copper deposits. Grasberg Operation and Engineering implemented a quality driven slope optimization program for the final pushback, with the goal to safely increase recoverable metal through steeper slopes, while utilizing existing infrastructure and equipment. This paper focuses on controlled blasting initiatives, blast monitoring, and as-built slope measurement tracking, although many groups contributed to the success of Grasberg slope optimization. The potential slope optimization area was divided into two sections based on geologic assessment: Area A at radial 200°-270° and Area B at radial 270°-360°. Original slope designs for areas A and B specified ISAs of 51° and 52°, respectively, with all BFAs in the pit at 70°. Through continuous development, collaboration and achievement, the Grasberg final pit accomplished a BFA increase to 80°for all areas, and an ISA increase from 51° to 56°in Area A, and 52°to 60° in Area B.

In 1892 I tested an ore, which was peculiarly difficult to treat, on several concentrators then in general use, including t,he Frue-vanner, the Luhrig table and the Cornish buddle. Owing to the character of the ore it had to be crushed- to a very fine state of division, and the results obtained were far from satisfactory; a large proportion of the values was lost in the slimes, which indicated the necessity of a very careful sizing before dressing. Even after reworking some of the slime-tailings, the results, in my opinion, were not as good aa those which might be obtained on a table designed more especially for the handling of slime. The software package has been written try operate on a 64K, Z-80 based microprocessor-computer. The project has been divided into two phases. The first phase dealt with the development of the graphics software The sec rind phase dealt with the retrofit of the Minefire and Ventilation Code to the Z-80 microprocessor-computer.

The Bureau of Mines has reviewed those portions of the "Tariff Schedules of the United States Annotated 1963" that are of interest to the minerals industry. This study shows to what extent rates of duty were altered (increased or decreased), and provides a bridge where possible from the old Schedule A classification sys tem to the new TSUS system of statistical reporting of import data. In general the new tariff has corrected previous classification defects and inconsistencies, but the rates of duties have not been materially changed.

"ABSTRACTTheoretical approach to estimate the ultimate pile capacity gives a rough idea at the initial stage of design that later on strengthen by the execution of static pile load test at site. The static pile load test is the only best option for the estimation of ultimate capacity of various types of piles. There are various methods based on strength, serviceability, net deflection for end bearing, shaft adhesion, graphical and extrapolation approaches for the interpretation of pile load test data to calculate the ultimate capacity. In this paper an attempt is made to evaluate the best-fit method for the estimation of ultimate capacity of single helix screw pile. The pile load tests on model scale were performed on screw piles of different helix diameter. The purpose of adopting model scale of testing was to achieve a state at which settlement increases without further increase in vertical load. The ground was compacted with dry sand at denser state. It was observed from the test results that extrapolation methods such as Chin- Kondner and Decourt predict the load settlement curve of screw piles very well, however ultimate pile capacity was on higher side which may not be suitable for the strength of helix plate. Decourt approach to plot the pile load data showed clear indication of the deformation of helix due to strong subsurface condition. A modified approach in Decourt method is proposed for estimating the ultimate capacity of screw pile having deformed helix whereas reduction factor is suggested for Chin-Kondner method for the estimation of ultimate capacity of intact screw pile.INTRODUCTIONDeep foundations are used to avoid the soft ground at shallow depth that is not suitable for carrying the structural load. Different types of piles have been used to transfer the load to deeper stratum. The screw pile is one of the new piling method and its use is considerably increasing. It consists of a cylindrical steel shaft with one or more helices at various length of the shaft. The diameter of helices (Dw) is usually 2 – 2.5 times the shaft diameter (Ds). The pile is installed to the required depth through torque and pressure. The advantage of screw pile over other piling system is its quick installation mechanism, high end-bearing and uplift resistance, noise reduction and minimum use of man power."

Mine waste and mine reclamation are topics of major interest to the mining industry, the government and the general public. This publication and its companion volume are the proceedings of a conference held in Pittsburgh, April 19-21, 1988. There were nine sessions (50 papers) that dealt with the geochemistry, hydrology and problems of mine waste and mine water, especially acid mine drainage. These comprise Volume 1. The nine sessions (43 papers) that dealt with reclamation and restoration of disturbed lands, as well as related policy issues, are included in volume 2. Volume 2 also contains the ten papers that pertained to control of subsidence and mine fires at abandoned mines. Poster session presentations are, in general, represented by abstracts; these have been placed in the back of both volumes.

The objective of this contract was to develop a simple, reliable, economical, remote-control roof bolting module for installation of mechanical and resin bolts. It was to be capable of placing longer than seam height bolts, up to 10 ft lengths, from a seam height of 36 to 72 in., while keeping the operator under supported roof. The resulting machine, called REM-Bolter, is a low profile unit that utilizes Foster-Miller Flexible Shaft Roof Drill, a Bendix Roof Bolt Inserter and a newly designed. Roof Bolt Lifter/Torquer. Every effort was made to strike a compromise between complete automation and complete manual control. In a controlled laboratory environment the REM-Bolter remotely installed 1000 bolts. Subsequently the machine was tested in an operating coal mine where 500 holes were drilled (and an equal number of bolts were installed) remotely, over a 4 month period. The results of all tests Live shown that the operator of a machine of this kind can quickly, and repeatedly, install rootbolts remotely from his operator compartment some 8 ft away from the drilling/bolting action. The report includes recommendations for improvements to the present REM-Bolter design that would translate the present test bed into a second generation test bed and a potential first generation production unit.

IN presenting this paper to the Institute I beg to mention, first, the results which I have obtained and the apparatus which I have employed, and to follow this with a brief description of the steps by which I have perfected this process. My present mode of testing is as follows : I obtain, either from the furnace or from the finished product in any stage in which it may chance to be, a small test-piece, usually about 4 of an inch square by 3 1/2 inches in length. I place this test-piece upon the poles of an ordinary electro-magnet, for about one minute, and thus magnetize it to its extreme limit. I then place it upon an indicator (which I will shortly describe), on which indicator there is already placed a piece of steel of similar form which has been magnetized in the same manner, the percentage of carbon of this second piece being definitely known. I then, by means of a scale, which forms part of the indicator, marked in degrees of carbonization, read the exact percentage of carbon contained in the piece under examination. My apparatus consists of an ordinary electro-magnet, connected with a suitable battery of moderate power, by which I magnetize the pieces as before described, and of an indicator which consists of a magnetic needle suitably mounted or suspended, so that it is free to deviate a few degrees only from the zero point, and having a rest, which is used to check the vibrations when in use, and to support its weight when not in use. At a right angle to the natural position of the needle I have a scale about 3 feet long, the zero point of which coincides with the natural position of the needle. This scale is marked in each direction from the zero point in degrees of carbonization.
