The operation of electric face equipment in underground coal mines has proven to be extremely hazardous to mining personnel, including equipment operators and others working in the vicinity of active equipment. Recent industrial engineering studies* of accidents and fatalities indicate that a major contributor to this hazardous situation is noncompliance with modern principles of human engineering, particularly lack of standardization of control configurations. Control configurations differ not only among different machine types, but also among the same machine types produced by different manufacturers. This lack of standardization can produce a high incidence of error in the operation of electric face equipment, thus creating a potential source of accidents. Other examples of non-compliance with human engineering principles are the widespread use of identical black, round control knobs (regardless of the function being performed), and the inappropriate location, spacing, and labeling of controls. Any or all of these factors may place the operator in a "negative transfer" situation, which means that control manipulations appropriate for one type of machine are different from (or even the reverse of) the control movements required to produce the same effect on other machine types. This situation increases the accident potential to the operator, as well as to others in the vicinity. Accident potential is further increased by circumstances which do not allow for large error tolerance-specifically, emergency procedures. Reports of accident statistics cite operator inexperience as a primary cause of most accidents involving underground electric face equipment. Several factors contribute to operator inexperience, including: 1. High personnel turnover 2. Employee absenteeism 3. Current union practice of bidding for jobs.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a flammability study of plastic ventilation ducts. Six rigid 16-in-diam fiberglass-reinforced plastic ducts from five manufacturers were examined using laboratory-scale, large-scale, and full-scale fire tests. The laboratory-scale tests included the American Society for Testing and Materials E162 radiant panel test, the E2863 oxygen index test, and the standardized small-scale flammability test (S3FT) developed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), U.S. Department of Labor, and replicated by the Bureau of Mines. Ten-foot lengths of the same ducts were also subjected to a large-scale vertical fire test, and 20-to 30-ft lengths were tested in a full-scale in-mine fire test at the Bureau's Lake Lynn Laboratory mine. The data from the laboratory-scale radiant panel test and oxygen index test indicated that the ducts were fire-resistant, However, five of the six ducts failed the S3FT and vertical fire tests, and four of the ducts failed the full-scale in-mine tests with flame propagation rates that ranged from 3 to 10 ft/min. The results indicate the need for improved fire-resistant plastic ducts. The good agreement between the S3FT re-sults and the vertical and full-scale tests show that the S3FT provides a good indication of the flammability of fiberglass-reinforced plastic ducting under realistic fire conditions.

"Mill feed materials that are not run-of-mine ore are often a challenge for mineral processors and tend to accumulate in stockpiles, where they remain unprocessed for many years and become “slow moving inventories”. During a complete re-evaluation of the Clarabelle Mill operation (38,000 ton/day capacity) in 2000, it was concluded that there was an opportunity to assemble a 5,000 ton/day custom circuit to treat such stockpiles in the equipment that remained available during regularly scheduled maintenance shut-downs.This project was part of the larger Mill Redesign Project and involved testing the intended flowsheet under a number of operating scenarios for the first material to be treated: spent refractory bricks. The laboratory focus was on how to maximize returns using the available equipment and reagents.The circuit was successfully commissioned in the fall of 2000. As the brick stockpile was depleted, other potential feeds were evaluated at the laboratory, as well as in the new custom circuit itself. Processing of the spent refractory brick has yielded a significant contribution to the profitability of INCO. Significant opportunities lie ahead for generating more value from other slow moving inventories.INTRODUCTIONIntegrated mining operations tend to have slow moving inventories along the path from the mines to the finished products. Spent refractory bricks from furnaces and converters and furnace bottoms are materials that often end up in long-tern stockpiles. Such stockpiles are a challenge, although they represent small tonnages on an annual basis, because they are unique materials, which cannot be readily brought into the process at a rate anywhere near that at which they are produced, due to the high contents of deleterious components such as chromite or magnesia. Accumulation over years will eventually yield a metal inventory worthy of consideration given the right opportunity, such as availability of spare equipment or peak metal prices."

3.1-1. Purpose. Development drilling is directed towards determining the grade, volume, and three-dimensional outline of a mineralized zone previously located by exploration. It is distinguished from exploration or reconnaissance drilling, which has as an objective the discovery of new mineralized areas. A development drilling and bulk sampling program should furnish the following information: 1. Geology of the mineralized zone. 2. Quantitative data on grade and tons of material within pertinent cutoff limits. 3. Physical size and shape of the deposit. Areas underlain by waste as well as ore. 4. Mineralogica1 and metallurgical characteristics of the ore. 5. I1hysical characteristics of the ore. 6. Hulk samples for metallurgical testing and grade check. 7. Data on other factors that could affect mining operations, such as ground water, ground conditions, etc. 3.1-2. Procedures. There are numerous methods and techniques that are used to acquire pertinent data on a potential ore deposit. The total cost and accuracy of a development program depends on significant evaluation of the geology, proper selection of a drilling method, thorough analysis of sample data, and accurate evaluation of all the information. Knowledge of the geology of the mineral deposit is important in planning the development testing program and in evaluating the data obtained from such a program. Exploration work usually provides some significant information on the general size, shape, thickness, grade, and geology of the deposit. In some cases no further data are needed; in many cases geological complexities suggested by the preliminary work require further geological study. Of considerable importance may be the following:

A mineral survey of a 5,700-acre portion of the 11,510-acre Upper Deep Creek Wilderness Study Area (ID-111-44B) in southwestern Idaho was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1985. No mining claims have been located, no minerals have been produced, and no resources have been identified in the study area. Three reconnaissance samples of alluvium from the Deep Creek drainage contained $0.21, $0.22, and $2.72 per cubic yard in placer gold, higher than usual for the Owyhee River canyonland area. The samples of near-surface material contained very fine gold in values too low to support large-volume commercial placer operations, but the quantity and size of the particles of gold in the alluvium is expected to increase near bedrock. Consequently, the area may be a target for recreational as well as small commercial suction dredge operations. The physical characteristics of the individual pieces of gold (bright and angular) indicate that it may have recently come from an unidentified nearby source.

In considering the effects of reducing gases on hot solid copper the following conclusions have been reached. (I) Depth of deoxidation of copper heated in reducing gas is grealer the smaller the amount of cuprous oxide originally present in the copper, the range studied being from 0.015 to 0.136 per cent. oxygen. It is suggested that the reason for this diflerence in depth of deoxidation is thai, when the copper is low in cuprous oxide, the reducing gas is diluted less by the gas that is formed in the reaction than when the copper is high in cuprous oxide; and the greater the concentration of the reducing gas the deeper the deoxidation. (2) The rate of deoxidation is much more rapid at the beginning of exposure than at the end, a condition especially noticeable at temperatures around 900" C.; that is, deoxidaion is retarded as the depth penetrated by the reducing gas increases. (3) Within the accuracy of the experiments arsenic in copper up to 0.5 per cent. has no tendency to increase or decrease the action of a reducing gas on the cuprous oxide presenx in the copper. In 1912 pieces of 0.365-in. hard copper rod 1/2 in. long were heated in a porcelain tube in an electric furnace, while illuminating gas was passed through. An approximate analysis of this gas is: Hydrogen 38 per cent., carbon monoxide 30 per cent., illuminants 13 per cent., methane 10 per cent., ethane 3 per cent., carbon dioxide 3 per cent., nitrogen 2 per cent., oxygen 0.4 per cent. The laboratory batch and continuous flotation pilot plant tests demonstrated the technical feasibility of recovering high grade mica concentrates from weathered mica pegmatite ores of Alabama and Georgia. The research indicated that combinations of anionic and cationic collectors may be used effectively for flotation of fine size mica from weathered pegmatite ores. In continuous tests, concentrates containing 98.5% mica were obtained from the Georgia pegmatite ore; the Alabama pegmatite ore concentrates contained 98.4% mica. The recoveries were 91 and 89% respectively. INTRODUCTION The principal uses of fine ground mica are as a filler in wallboard joint cement, as a filler and surface coating for roofing, as an ingredient in paints, and in oil well drilling mud. The mineral has other uses in the manufacture of rubber, wallpaper, plastics, welding rods, electric insulation, house insulation, and textiles, and as an annealing agent in metal treatment. In recent years, more than 99% of the domestic mica produced has been scrap and flake mica (mica which does not meet specifications for sheet mica and is used for producing fine ground mica). There has been a continued increase in mica production for several years, the 1963 production of scrap and flake mica totaling 117,251 tons.1 Ground mica is obtained primarily by crushing and milling pegmatites and schists. To a lesser extent, mica is produced as a byproduct of kaolin washing and feldspar and spodumene flotation operations. The processes used in recovering mica by crushing and milling pegmatites are generally simple, consisting of various combinations of alternate roll crushers and trommel screens that separate the mica and gangue at screen sizes coarser than 6-mesh. As these processes are designed to recover only coarse mica, high losses in the plant rejects are common. Large tonnages of tailings from the crushing and screening plants have been accumulated in a number of areas. Methods for treating such products were developed by the Bureau of Mines in 1941,2 but have not been generally applied. More recently, mica flotation research has been completed and published by the Bureau of Mines.3 These methods required complete removal of 150- to 200-mesh materials from the flotation feed with consequent fine mica losses. Later, the Bureau of. Mines investigated methods for-recovering fine size mica from pegmatite ores after desliming sufficiently to remove clay materials, but not so drastically as to remove the fine sands. This report summarizes the results of these studies. The process developed was effective on pegmatite ores from two locations and should be applicable to the commercial treatment of other mica-bearing pegmatite ores and fine rejects that have been accumulated at various mica-milling operations. DESCRIPTION OF ORES The ores used in the investigation were obtained from the Dixie Mines, Inc., Heflin, Alabama, and the Ruberoid Corporation, Hartwell, Georgia. The sample from Alabama contained muscovite and quartz, with a high percentage of clay, and minor amounts of biotite, kaolin, limonite and tourmaline. The mica in the ore was essentially all minus 4-mesh in size and was free of attached mineral grains. The Georgia sample contained muscovite and quartz, with minor amounts of biotite, kaolin, and limonite. The mica in the ore, which was essentially all minus 4-mesh, was liberated. Petrographic analyses of the two samples are given in Table I. THE ANIONIC-CATIONIC MICA FLOTATION METHOD Previous investigators2,3 have reported that complete desliming of mica ores at 150- to 200-mesh was required prior to flotation with cationic collectors to obtain satisfactory selective separation of the mica from the other mineral components. Numerous tests were made at the Tuscaloosa Metallurgy Research Center to determine if some reagent combination could be used to selectively float finer size mica without complete desliming. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Mining Engineering) degree A study into the stability of strike gullies at TauTona mine was to be carried out. In reaching the conclusions to follow, a three-stage process was followed. ?A literature study as well as discussions with management and workers alike to gain their inputs and perceptions. ?An ESH Department survey into the history of transgression from proper mine standard in TauTona strike gullies. Unfortunately records were found to be scarce and obscure and the importance of better inter-departmental recordings cannot be stressed enough. ?An underground survey of 11 pre-selected gullies distributed in both the UCL and LCL reef horizons. This stage is to carry the greatest weight in the points to be brought forward in this report. The process highlighted and ranked the following areas as the most critical role players in the deterioration of strike gullies: ?Poor blasting practice ?Sub-standard siding depth and lead-lags ?Split sets ?Off line gully development ?Adverse geological features. The following has been suggested to the mine to help reduce strike gully instability. ?Where possible, maintain lead-lags below 7 m?else increase the siding depth to suit. ?Decrease the gully width standard to 1.2 m (especially in ?high risk areas?). ?Discourage drillers from drilling side holes in gully face blast pattern. This will allow for time in which tendon support can be kept up to date. ?Ensure split sets are installed 1 m behind the gully face so as to prevent opening up of fractures. ?Utilize the centre split set in the 1:2:1 pattern to maintain the proper gully line. ?When adverse conditions prevail, it is necessary to apply a special support plan not only to the panel face, but also (just as importantly) to the gully as well. Shotcreting of the gully hanging is a suitable long-term consideration for providing the additional a real coverage needed. This paper, which describes mining methods and practices at the Piokee mining unit and the Piokee expertmental mining project of The Eagle-Picher Co. in northeast Oklahoma, is one of a series being prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. The Piokee unit, comprising the Piokee, Rowe, Lucky Syndicate, and parts of the Netta White and Otis White leases, is in the SW1/4, W1/2NW1/4SE1/4, and W1/2SW1/4SE1/4 sec. 17, T. 29 N., R. 23 E., Ottawa County, Okla. (figs. 1 and 2), The 200-acre tract is adjacent to the town of Picher and near the heart of the Picher field of the Tri-State zinc-lead mining district.

This research program was a theoretical and experimental study to improve understanding of the mechanisms of flame extinguishment in methane-coal dust-air-suppressant mixtures. This final report is a summary of work conducted during this grant, sponsored by the Bureau of Mines. Work under this new grant closely followed a recently completed contract for the Bureau of Mines that was conducted at this laboratory, and results of the earlier contract are also summarized in this report, as required in the grant work statement. The experimental effort was concentrated on supplementing the limited data available to describe laminar flames in methane-coal-air-suppressant mixtures. The theoretical effort was devoted to developing a comprehensive model that could be used to explain and extrapolate the experimental data. Selected for study were the following flames: Methane-air; methane-air plus KHCO , KNO3, K C204, KBr, Al203 or Monnex; methane-coal dust-air; coal dust-air with size, volatiles content, and concentration as variables, and coal dust-air plus KHCO3, KN03, KBr, NaCl or CaC03.

Hydrologic assessments of existing and proposed waste rock stockpiles (WRS) are typically required for application of operating and closure permits at mine sites. The results of these assessments can be used to determine the applicability of the state groundwater permit program requirements to the operation and closure of these stockpiles. The objective of this hydrologic assessment was to ascertain whether or not the WRS at the Ajo Mine have a reasonable probability of discharging potential pollutants to the underlying aquifer under the operational mine conditions. The hydrologic assessment was performed based on an evaluation of climatic data, prediction of the net infiltration rate through the WRS and prediction of additional hydrologic factors such as the time required to deplete available moisture storage in WRS. The predicted net infiltration rates ranging from 0.13 inches/year (1.1x10-8 cm/s) to 0.24 inches/year (1.9x10-8 cm/s) are below the threshold value of less than 10-7 cm/s recommended by Hutchison and Ellison (1992) as being characteristic of conditions that produce no or negligible quantities of seepage. In addition, the total time required to deplete available moisture storage within the Ajo Mine WRS and for any potential seepage from the WRS to reach the underlying aquifer is estimated to range from 260 years to 1,950 years. Collectively, the climatological and geotechnical investigations and the hydrologic predictions demonstrate that the WRS at the Ajo Mine hydrologically do not have a reasonable probability of discharging pollutants to the underlying aquifer. As a result of this prediction, the stockpile will not be regulated under the state groundwater permit program and operational and reclamation requirements will be limited to managing surface water runoff.

The bulk of the world?s platinum production originates from the Merensky and UG2 reefs within the Bushveld Complex, South Africa. Both the Merensky and UG2 reefs are disrupted by faults, dykes, potholes and iron-rich ultramafic pegmatite bodies (IRUPs)?features that impact negatively on production, planning and safety. It is therefore advantageous to know of their presence and geometry ahead of mining. To date, no geophysical technique has been successfully applied to the routine mapping of mine-scale potholes and IRUPs. These disruptive features may vary from a few metres to several tens of metres in diameter. In this paper the applicability of in-mine electrical resistance tomography (ERT) to map potholes and other disruptions to the continuity of the Merensky and UG2 reefs ahead of mining is demonstrated using two case studies.

The new copper processing plant of the Sarcheshmeh copper complex consists of two parallel circuits. After a primary crushing, the ore is sent to a SAG mill and the product is further ground in a ball mill. The overflow of the hydrocyclones is fed to a flotation circuit which contains 8 rougher tank cells (RCS130), 3 cleaner cells (RCS50), 5 scavenger cells (RCS50) and a 4 x 12 m flotation column as recleaner. The circuit was initially designed to process a feed containing 0.8% Cu, but because of the ore type change, the feed grade decreased to 0.6% Cu. This resulted in a reduction of final concentrate grade and recovery from 28 and 85.5% to 24 and 84.4%, respectively. Based on the original design, the copper and silica recovery in the cleaner cells should be 69 and 55%, respectively, but these values increased to 85 and 75% because of a higher retention time. The rather high silica recovery (i.e., 75%) was found to be the main source of the lower final concentrate grade. In order to reduce the retention time of particles in the cleaner cell from 13.7 to 6.9 min, the rougher concentrates of two parallel circuits were fed to only one cleaner-scavenger and regrind circuit. This modification increased the cleaner and final concentrate grade from 15.1 and 24.5% to 17 and 26%, respectively. To prevent a possible reduction in the copper recovery, the froth depth in the scavenger cells was reduced. The overall outcome of the circuit modification was evaluated to be a 10% reduction in the energy consumption without any loss in the overall copper recovery.

The recovery of zinc from oxidized zinc minerals by the caustic soda leach and electrolytic or chemical precipitation was investigated . With the exception of willemite ( 2 ZnO • Si0₂ ) oxidized zinc minerals were readily soluble in 180 to 240 g / 1 NaOH solutions . A high- grade zinc flake was recovered electrolytically from solutions which had been treated with zinc powder to precipitate copper and lead . Solutions were recycled to the leach stage with a recovery of about 85 percent of the zinc from an ore containing 21.2 percent zinc . Electrolysis was conducted at a current density of 120 amp / ft2 with a power consumption of about 1.5 kwhr /lb zinc . Zinc was also recovered from leach solutions by dilution of the solutions , carbonation of the solution , or the addition of sulfur to boiling solutions . A dilution ratio of 5 : 1 precipitated 59 percent of the zinc in 9 days . Carbonation of the solutions precipitated the zinc as zinc oxide ( ZnO ) and solutions could be recausticized for recycling . Zinc precipitated as the sulfide with sulfur was easily filtered and washed . Approximately half of the sulfur added to solutions was lost in the form of sodium thiosulfate ( Na S₂03 ) .

This research study was performed on a case study basis and can be divided into two parallel thrusts: electrical and thermal energy conservation. Energy consumed annually in mining and refining operations represents about 6% of the 80 quadrillion Btu's consumed nationally. In the electrical portion of the study, five areas were addressed: optimal dispatching of on-site generation, high-efficiency motors, conductor selection, power factor correction, and high efficacy lighting. In the case study mine which has a multiple unit on-site generation system, optimally dispatching units can save significant energy. The other four methods are difficult to justify on a retrofit basis due to capital costs. In the thermal portion of the study, a thermodynamic analysis was performed on the reverberatory smelting process possible areas of energy conservation were identified as radiation and convection heat losses from the furnace arch and the dumping of high energy content smelting slag. It has been shown that materials currently available can provide the means of reducing heat loss from the reverberatory furnace. It has also been shown that a significant amount of energy may be recovered from the slag. However, these are both subject to further study and validation.

The predominant tonnage use of titanium is as a white pigment, in the form of rutile or anatase, which are allotropic modifications of titanium dioxide. Because of its whiteness, high refractive index and resulting light scattering ability, titanium dioxide is unequaled as a white pigment for paints, paper, rubber, and a wide variety of other materials. Consumption of titanium dioxide pigments for these uses has been rising steadily for many years, United States consumption in 1956 amounting to about 486,000 tons, worth $250,000,000. Production was off a little in 1957 and 1958. An outstanding development in the titanium field in recent years is the expansion of titanium metal production. Virtually nonexistent before 1948, United States production of pure titanium metal sponge reached a high in 1957 of about 17,200 tons, worth about $77,000,000. United States titanium sponge metal production in 1958 was cut back to about 4,600 tons because of reductions in military requirements. Another major use of titanium, in the form of the mineral, rutile, is for welding rod coatings. United States consumption of rutile for this purpose in 1958 amounted to about 11,000 tons, worth $1,100,000. Titanium-Bearing Minerals Although several minerals contain titanium as a major constituent, only a few of these occur in sufficient quantities and concentrations to be of commercial importance. These are ilmenite (FeTiO3), rutile (TiO2), and alteration products of ilmenite which have been referred to as weathered ilmenite, leucoxene, or arizonite. The other polymorphs of titanium dioxide, brookite and anatase, occur in a few deposits, of which only one has been of even minor importance. Considerable concentrations of titanite or sphene (CaTiSiO5) and perovskite (CaTiO3) are known, but do not compete with ilmenite and rutile deposits in grade or size. Rutile is very widely distributed as an accessory mineral in most rocks, but large deposits of commercial importance are rare. A few rock deposits have been worked for rutile but only one, in Virginia, is in operation (1959). Development of one in Mexico was discontinued recently. At present, the main sources of rutile are the beach and dune sands of Australia and Florida. A major use of rutile is for the manufacture of titanium tetrachloride, which is the intermediate compound universally used in titanium metal manufacture. Another main use of rutile is for welding rod coatings. Although the whiteness and brightness of titanium dioxide pigment is due to the high refractive index of rutile or anatase, natural rutile is too impure to be used directly as a white pigment, is too expensive to use for manufacturing pure oxide pigment, and is too scarce to provide the required tonnages. Instead, the cheaper, more abundant, mixed oxide of iron and titanium, ilmenite, which is readily decomposed by sulfuric acid, is used for manufacture of rutile and anatase pigments. Ilmenite is mined from both rock and sand deposits. Rock deposits contain ilmenite in massive or heavily disseminated form along with magnetite or hematite and are almost invariably associated with anorthositic and gabbroic rocks. To improve the understanding of the support interaction mechanics between grouted bolts and coal mine roofs and to help lay the foundations for improved design and evaluation techniques, the 0.8. Bureau of Mines has conducted laboratory, field, and analytical studies of the load transfer mechanics of grouted roof bolts. Mechanisms by which load is transferred from a bolt through the grout to the rock mass are analyzed. Strain gauges were installed on over 70 bolts and tested to observe the rate of load transfer when a force was applied at the bolt head. Laboratory and field tests were conducted to determine bolt-grout- rock interaction behavior in both the elastic and postyield phases. Long-term laboratory tests were run to determine the time-dependent properties of both polyester resin- and-gypsum-grouted bolts. Numerical studies using finite- element techniques were compared to the experimental results. Elastic tests showed that 90 pct of the applied load was transferred within 24 in of bolt length. Long-term tests indicated that creep is more significant in gypsum-grouted bolts than in resin- grouted bolts. Plastic studies showed that yielding of steel will translate down the length of the bolt from 6 to 20 in.

"*Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Mining Engineering) degreeSynopsisLiqhobong Mining Development Company (LMDC) has been experiencing problems with boulders after blasting where the fragment sizes exceed the maximum of 800 mm as per mine standard. As a result, the mine has employed various methods to improve the fragmentation. The goal is to produce a run-of-mine (ROM) feed that does not choke the crusher and cause delays in production. In order to achieve this goal, fragmentation distribution within the fines and coarse envelope must be optimized through effective planning of blasting activities and accurate execution.The mine determined the fines-coarse envelope within which the entire crushing system can handle fragments using Split Desktop software. It is expected that both the predicted and actual fragmentation curves lie within that envelope for optimal fragmentation. The Kuz-Ram model with blast design parameters of 2.6 m for burden, 2.8 m for spacing, and 127 mm hole diameter was used to predict the fragmentation. The results show that the blast design parameters may need altering to achieve optimum fragmentation. Furthermore, the execution of the drilling and blasting may be the cause of the fragmentation problems. The mean fragmentation size (X50) differs greatly, unlike the uniformity index (n)s values which are relatively close to each other (0.6 to 2.2). The mean squared error (MSE) values have a large range. A proposed solution is a modified burden, spacing, and hole diameter. It is concluded that blast design parameters need to be reviewed in order to obtain correct predictions. IntroductionFragmentation has an impact on the mine production cycle which comprises, inter alia, drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, and crushing. Correct fragmentation as set by the plant design is important as it reduces the time lost due to secondary blasting and/or loading difficulties. In this paper we analyse blast results at Liqhobong Mining Development Company (LMDC) in Lesotho for a period of six months. This project was undertaken to observe the trends from the blasts and to identify whether any discrepancies exist in the overall blast information. The period under study included 16 blasts."
