The Thirlmere aqueduct was constructed over 110 years ago to provide water from the Lake District (in the north-west of England) to the city of Manchester some 60 miles (100 km) away. The aqueduct remains, to this day, a key piece of infrastructure in the distribution of raw water in the north-west of England. A short section of the aqueduct was identified as being in poor condition during routine inspections by the owner. Subsequent investigations attributed the conduit damage to the movement of unstable ground over the conduit. Bachy Soletanche Ltd was subsequently appointed to carry out the design and construction of the slope stabilisation works and to undertake repairs inside the damaged conduit. The works were undertaken on an existing slope which, in places stands at a gradient of up to 40º to the horizontal. Strict limitations on plant and equipment were imposed by the client (United Utilities) to ensure that slope and conduit loading and associated vibrations were kept to an absolute minimum during construction. An intensive instrumentation system was installed to monitor surface movements, ground movements at depth, conduit movement and strains across existing planes of weaknesses within the conduit. The solution comprised the installation of spaced piles up-slope and down-slope of the conduit. Restrictions were imposed on the minimum stand-off distance between the outside face of the conduit and the piling works so targeted permeation grouting was undertaken to improve the ?connection? between the conduit and the down-slope piles. The presence of existing sub conduit groundwater flows was suspected and the permeation grouting was focused in areas to minimize disruption to the groundwater regime. The paper presents the basis of the design and highlights the combined construction and instrumentation methods adopted to minimise damage to this valuable asset.

The Hauraki goldfield is located east of Auckland in the North Island of New Zealand. It includes Great Barrier Island, the Coromandel Peninsula and the Coromandel and Kaimai Ranges as far south as the town of Te Aroha and south east to Te Puke. It has a total north-south extent of about 180 km and an area of 3000 km2. The goldfield is the most productive in New Zealand, and while production at present is negligible, the area has undergone continuous exploration over the last seven years.

INTERNAL oxidation occurs readily in silver due to the rapid diffusion of oxygen in silver.' It has a marked effect on creep in polycrystalline silver2 and raises the critical resolved shear stress in single crystals of silver.3 However, the effect of oxygen on the work-hardening parameters of silver is not known. It is the aim of this paper to describe the effect of internal oxidation on the work-hardening characteristics of single crystals of silver and an Ag-0.1 at. pct A1 alloy. The materials used were: 99.99 pct Ag from Handy and Harman and 99.993+ pct A1 from Alcoa. Single crystals, 6 mm by 6 mm in cross section of silver and Ag-0.1 at. pct A1 of mo.5 orientation, i.e., the orientation with the Schmidt factor m = 0.5. were grown by the Chalmers technique.4 One set of specimens, referred to herein as oxidized specimens, was annealed at 940°C for 24 hr in a muffle furnace, in air, and furnace-cooled to room temperature. Another set of specimens, referred to as nonoxidized specimens, was annealed in oxygen-free helium at 940°C for 24 hr and furnace-cooled over a period of 7 hr to room temperature. The annealed single crystals were tested at room temperature in a floor-model Instron testing machine. The results are presented in Figs. 1 and 2. A

This report is an account of research conducted to improve the performance of and then further field test Draft Power Sensor (DPS) equipment, the use of which enables a bulldozer operator to optimize his machine's work rate. Significant improvements were made in DPS hardware, and extended field testing was conducted at two working strip mines: the Glenharold Mine of Consolidation Coal Company, near Stanton, North Dakota, and the Beulah Mine of Knife River Coal Company, near Beulah, North Dakota. This report documents the increase of bulldozer work production by greater than twenty percent while using the Draft Power Sensor when compared to baseline work production without benefit of the Draft Power Sensor. Research was done by Southwest Research Institute under contract with the Bureau of Mines.

Errors in ore reserve estimation can occur during drilling and sampling, sample preparation and analysis, geological logging and modelling, database construction, statistical or geostatistical evaluation, selection of economic parameters, selection of ore reserve method and assessment of mining constraints. Core sample recovery can be a major source of error, and it is proposed that the modelling of grade, metal accumulation and thickness should be accompanied by the modelling of core recovery (or core loss) so that for each ore block a weighted block recovery factor is obtained. This gives a good indicator of the reliability of a reserve estimate. It is suggested that a resource reliability rating (RRR) system be established to quantify what is meant by geological assurance and to combine this with an estimate of the precision of estimation as gained by geostatistical analysis. Proven and probable minable reserves would be those with an RRR better than 50% and a precision of estimation better than 20%

Phosphate tailings through Flotation contains large amount of dolomite which is difficult to be separated from apatite. In this present research, phosphate tailings is recycled by Flotation i.e. re-processing. High-purity dolomite with purity as high as 91.17% is seperated, which contains 19.82% of MgO. The results of orthogonal test show that the effect of various levels of different factors on the high-purity dolomite floatated. Future utilization of purified dolomite is also discussed: magnesium fertiliser especially magnesium phosphate is expected to be an ideal product from high-purity dolomite.

"Segregation of impurities during refining of metallurgical grade silicon (MG-Si) is an option to produce solar grade silicon (SG-Si). Directional solidification is a last step in production of SG-Si effective for removal of metallic impurities. The possibility is investigated to use metallic impurities originally present in MG-Si for removing boron and phosphorus. MG-Si has been treated using two methods: 1) alloying with calcium and 2) refining with Na2O-CaO-SiO2 slag, both by controlled cooling. The microstructure of silicon and the impurities distribution have been studied before and after the treatments. Using EPMA phosphorus and boron have been detected in 1-2 wt% concentration range in several intermetallic compounds in grain boundaries after both treatments. This observation points to a different possible mechanism of silicon refining from boron and phosphorus. Controlled cooling improves migration of phosphorus and boron to the silicide phases in grain boundaries, which can be removed by acid leaching treatment.2. IntroductionStandards for silicon solar cells and growing demand on “green” energy require economical and efficient route to the production of solar grade silicon. Refining of cheap metallurgical grade silicon is one of the promising options, where application of existing metallurgical approaches can result in cost-efficient production on industrial scale. Focus in refining is on impurities, which are most difficult to remove: B, P, Al, Ti, due to their large segregation coefficient in silicon and low vapour pressure [1]. Moreover, more environmentally friendly technology in comparison to the traditional Siemens process [2] will be in accordance with societal needs. Based on properties of common impurities in metallurgical grade silicon, alloying refining and slag refining are suggested as competitive techniques having potential effect on removal of impurities harmful for conversion of solar energy [3, 4]. Alloying with Ca followed by acid leaching was found to be effective for removal of Fe and Ti from silicon [5] and to enhance also removal of boron [6] and phosphorus [7, 8]. In the work of Inoue et al. [8] drastically increasing removal of phosphorus from silicon has been observed with an increase of Ca content and a thermodynamics-based explanation was provided. Since phosphorus has been found to condense in the secondary precipitate mainly composed of CaSi2, it can be removed together with iron and titanium by consecutive acid leaching treatment. Slag refining is one of the metallurgical methods proposed to be effective for refining of metallurgical grade silicon from boron [9, 10]. Slags with additions of the following oxides to silica have shown positive effect on removal of boron: CaO [11-13], Na2O [11,14]. Mechanism of slag refining from boron is based on oxidation of boron followed by its incorporation in the slag network [9,11]; the same mechanism is suggested for refining from phosphorus taking into account that oxides of boron and phosphorus are known as network-formers [15]."

[Study and development of sensing techniques and sensors were performed to aid shuttle car drivers in detecting, obstacles and in guiding the car along the face haulage route. Microwave, acoustic, and optical sensing techniques were considered as part of the feasibility study for obstacle detection. Various guidance techniques, including wire-following and rib-ranging were investigated. Active optical sensing was selected for obstacle detection to obtain the bear overage and sharp angular cutoff characteristics required within the packaging limitations defined by the shuttle car configuration. Rib-ranging guidance was selected to achieve completely self-contained shuttle car system which responds to the mine geometry without need for wires, stripes, or other path defining devices. Extensive hybrid computer simulation runs were performed to valuate various guidance techniques during the feasibility study. Subsequent simulation rues were performed to establish parameter values for the rib-ranging guidance system. The obstacle detection and guidance system was designed, fabricated and installed on a standard shuttle car. The system satisfied all applicable permissibility requirements of Schedule 2G. An experimental permit was issued to Bendix for operation in an underground coal mine. System evaluation tests were performed first above ground at the Bendix Research Laboratories. The simulation model was validated by these runs. Final testing wan performed underground in an operating mine with an experienced shuttle car driver. All sensors successfully demonstrated Chi predicted performance capability during underground face haulage tests. Dust did not Impair system performance and lens cleaning was not required during working shifts. Further development is required to achieve the desired obstacle detection performance Closed loop steering control with manual override is recommended o: mended for the lateral guidance e system. The guidance system should be an invaluable aid to low-coal shuttle car drivers where continuous mining machines are utilized.]

With problems of diminishing ore grades and increasing cost of facilities, the mineral industry is acutely aware of the needs for improving beneficiation processes. Industry and universities are directing intensive technical effort to develop- ment of techniques with potential for using digital computers in automation and process analysis. The main problem of early attempts at on-line computer process control methods was that of economics. Now, with new advances in analysis and modeling making practical application economically important, it appears that minerals beneficiation is on the threshold of a significant jump in operating technology. In reviewing this work, particular note was taken of research and development applied to fundamental processes and the significant areas of effort where operations research techniques are used for process applications leading to the current state-of-the-art. Development of data automation and on-line control methods for process industries is deferred to the next section of this volume. This section deals with computer-facilitated mathematical-modeling development and reviews this work in conjunction with associated prior fundamental research leading to development of the methods. Flotation The 1960 state-of -the -art in flotation modeling was com- piled by Arbiter and Harris in the volume, 50th Anniversary of Froth Flotation, edited by Fuerstenau1. Many workers in the field of flotation initiated their research through flotation models, and this effort has led to use of simulation and operations re search methods employing computer techniques to facilitate advance of this work. The flotation model of Imaizumi and Inoue, published with supporting data in 1962, was expanded in 1968 with the objective of developing a basis for process automation.2,3 The fundamental work of Woodburn and Loveday in 1965 has led to techniques applicable to flotation circuit design optimization.4 This analysis is described in this volume by Woodburn in conjunction with King, Buchalter, and Piper. ‘Every mine is a pilot’ is an attitude which encourages the mining paradox of optimistic mine plans and equipment under performance; propped up by an environment lacking accountability. The premise that ‘every mine is a pilot’, appears to underlie the development and operating approach to most mines. It is the hypothesis of this paper that many mining companies, development teams and their managers largely ignore what is done elsewhere. Anecdotally, most planners don’t know whether the selected rates are high or low (rates based on theoretical models tend to be high – certainly higher than what most companies can achieve). Mines then consistently operate the equipment at rates well below targets; often more than 20 per cent below. Further to this paradox, mine performance data demonstrates the average mine is currently operating their equipment at levels of output not much more than half the output of those in the top ten per cent. On the whole mines don’t know the potential of their equipment and therefore don’t put appropriate plans in place to do better. After all, when ‘every mine is a pilot’ there is little reason to look to one’s peers for an indication of potential. This paper will outline why every mine is not a pilot and how mines do value some knowledge, but not as much as they should. This paper proposes a two-pronged approach to address this issue in the area of equipment performance. This approach is to:1. engage in better forecasting of equipment rates and better subsequent performance through benchmarking against industry standards2. provide conditions for more accountability.These parameters are linked and proper implementation of them will address the losses which many shareholders and financiers have incurred when investing in companies with unrealistic mining plans.CITATION:Lumley, G I, 2016. For bridges or buildings that may be subjected to large vertical and lateral loads, drilled shafts offer an economic foundation solution. While the current drilled shaft design practice is considered adequate, introducing a performance-based approach to designing the drilled shafts will make their design more cost-effective and produce more dependable response. This concept was examined using analysis of 41 drilled shaft load test data from several states. This process identified the challenge with the lack of information from the Osterberg (O-cell) load test method to characterize the full top load-displacement response. When a typical single O-cell is utilized in a drilled shaft test, depending on the location of the O-cell and the geomaterials present along and beneath the shaft, the load test result typically quantifies either the side resistance or end bearing reaching the ultimate load-displacement curve but not both components. This limitation hinders the determination of a suitable shaft resistance as a function of a target top displacement. To overcome this challenge, an improved procedure is proposed for establishing the full load-displacement curve based on data gathered from one O-cell. The method will be presented in the paper for three different cases (i.e., side resistance reaches the ultimate during the test, end bearing reaches the ultimate during the test, and neither components reach the ultimate values). Because it allows the characterization of the full load-displacement curve, the proposed procedure will allow performance-based design of drilled shafts with due consideration to settlement while satisfying the Load and Resistance Factor Design.

A inspeção na ventaneira é de particular importância quando carvão pulverizado é injetado através da mesma. Caso ocorra um bloqueio na injeção de uma ventaneira, o carvão pulverizado pode queimar no tubo reto ao invés de queimar no alto forno, resultando assim em danos consideráveis para o tubo reto, ocasionando também a parada do Alto Forno. Por segurança, o fornecimento de carvão pulverizado para uma ventaneira dever ser interrompida assim que for detectado o bloqueio. A complex network approach on a rough fracture is developed. In this manner, some hidden metric spaces (similarity measurements) between apertures profiles are set up and a general evolutionary network in two directions (in parallel and perpendicular to the shear direction) is constructed. Also, an algorithm (COmplex Networks on Apertures: CONA) is proposed in which evolving of a network is accomplished using preferential detachments and attachments of edges (based on a competition and game manner) while the number of nodes is fixed. Also, evolving of clustering coefficients and number of edges display similar patterns as well as are appeared in shear stress, hydraulic conductivity and dilation changes, which can be engaged to estimate shear strength distribution of asperities.

"Greenhouse gas emissions—specifically of carbon dioxide—are a concern in Canada, where industrial sectors such as mining are stringently regulated for carbon release. Cumulative emissions are positively related to fuel consumption, which is controlled by several factors. This study investigates one of these factors: the product of vehicle speed and running surface total resistance (TR; sum of rolling resistance and grade resistance). Results show that TR directly affects fuel consumption and emissions—a relationship that is mathematically predictable. Fuel consumption and emissions, which are principally associated with the durability or deterioration of wearing course materials, were analyzed to aid selection of road construction capping material of low rolling resistance. In the oil sands region in the province of Alberta, ground conditions change seasonally. Therefore, the annual fuel consumption for the same wearing course material was also compared. Results demonstrated that haul truck size was a contributing factor, but vehicle speed and TR more strongly influenced fuel consumption and emissions. ¦ KEYWORDS Carbon dioxide, Emissions, Fuel consumption, Grade resistance (GR), Greenhouse gas (GHG), Haul truck, Rolling resistance (RR), Total resistance (TR) RÉSUMÉ Les émissions de gaz à effet de serre (GES), et particulièrement celles de dioxyde de carbone, sont un problème au Canada, où les secteurs industriels tels que l’exploitation minière sont rigoureusement réglementés pour leurs émissions de carbone. Les émissions cumulées sont indéniablement en lien avec la consommation de carburant, qui est contrôlée par plusieurs facteurs. Cette étude examine l’un de ces facteurs, à savoir le produit de la vitesse du véhicule et de la résistance totale de la surface de roulement (la résistance totale, ou RT, est la somme de la résistance au roulement et de la résistance due aux rampes). Les résultats montrent que la RT affecte directement la consommation de carburant et les émissions, un lien qui est mathématiquement prévisible. La consommation de carburant et les émissions, qui sont principalement associées à la durabilité ou la détérioration des matériaux composant la couche d’usure, ont été analysées afin de contribuer à la sélection de matériau de recouvrement pour la construction de routes ayant une faible résistance au roulement. Dans la région des sables bitumineux de l’Alberta, les conditions au niveau du sol changent à chaque saison. Pres-sure on world leaders to quickly reduce their carbon footprint is prevalent, prompting new standards and regulations in various industries, including mining and oil and gas. In 2017, the Government of Alberta implemented a carbon tax. The majority of mining activities in this province are truck-shovel operations, where a large fleet of ultra-class trucks is loaded by shovels. Ultra-class haul trucks, classified as those with a capacity of 218–363 tonnes (t), emit high levels of carbon as they travel to processing entry points and waste dumps as designated by the mine plan and mine dispatcher. Gaseous and particulate exhaust emissions from 20 diesel engines in service at five underground mines were measured with high accuracy instrumentation. The engines that were tested were checked for faults or maladjustments. The vehicle and engine maintenance organization was studied at each mine and an idealized maintenance program was devised. Faults were induced in a new diesel engine to determine their effect on the characteristics of the exhaust emissions. The results, conclusions and recommendations from this investigation are presented in this final report.

The feasibility of redesigning and adapting the all- secondary-explosive, low-voltage, electric safe detonator for use as a delay detonator has been demonstrated. Experimental results have shown that operational characteristics can be adjusted to allow direct competition of safe delay detonators with commercial delay blasting caps. Five different experimental delay period models have been developed and tested. Test results are given and results are evaluated. Subsequent simplified and improved designs for practical and economical mass production are described. Design concepts to meet Bureau of Mines voltage withstand, incendivity, and spark sensitivity requirements are included. Recommendations are made for experimental procedures to ready the safe delay detonator for mass production and extensive use in mining and other industries.

A chemical method of analysis for beryllium was developed recently in Bureau of Mines laboratories. In this method, quinalizarin (1-2-5-8 tetrahydroxyanthraquinone) in N/4 NaOH is used as a colorimetric titration reagent. This solution has a reddish-purple color, whereas the solution containing equivalent amounts of beryllium and the dye is rather blue. In the titration procedure, standard quinalizarin solution is added to the unknown beryllium sample and to two standard beryllium samples of different but known concentrations. Then adjustments in concentrations of BeO in the two known and of quinalizarin in all three are made until the red-violet shade of the unknown is halfway between that of the two knowns. The amount of BeO in the unknown is calculated from the known BeO content of the solutions between which it lies. It is extremely difficult to distinguish the slight differences in shade of these solutions without the use of a proper light filter, especially when the concentration is over 0.1 mg. of BeO, so a study was made of the transmission characteristics of quinalizarin in N/4 NaOH and of the corresponding beryllium complex to determine what filter would give the most contrast.

The principal events during the year consisted in the exploitation of the Kirkuk field, the regular operation of the four-million-ton pipe line to the Mediterranean, and the discovery of low-gravity oil on three other structures in the West Tigris (Shergat) area. The Iraq Petroleum Co., Ltd. continued the systematic exploitation and exploration of its Kirkuk field, maintaining a carefully unitized operation. Bottom-hole pressure differentials and low gas-oil ratios were maintained. All crude was produced by flowing The cleaning up following the construction of the Mediterranean pipe line, which began deliveries in August, 1934, was completed during the first quarter of 1935. The line easily maintained its rated capacity for the remainder of the year. The Mosul Oilfields, Ltd., through its operating subsidiary, the B.O.D., Ltd., expanded its exploratory organization from 9 to 16 drilling rigs and discovercd 20" A.P.I. crude on the Sadid, Hibbarah and Qasab anticlines. Whether these discoveries will be commercial pools remains to be proved. The Qaiyarah-Najmah-Jawan field, which was discovered by the I.P.C. in 1928, was extended arid production was found in the Eo-Cretaceous as well as the "Main Limestone" (Eocene, Oligocene and Lower Miocene). Gas caps were found under each of the crests of the West Tigris structures. Negotiations are in progress between the Mosul Oilfields, Ltd. and the Iraq Government for the extension of the Anatolian Railway from the Turkish border to Mosul, with a view to tanking the heavy West Tigris crude to the Mediterranean. The subsidiary of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Co., Ltd.', the Khanaqin Oil Co., Ltd., continued to operate its Naft Khaneh field near the Iranian (Persian) border to supply the local Iraq market through the Rafidain Oil Co., Ltd. Somewhat more than 28 million barrels of crude was produced in Iraq during 1935.
