Dioctahedral clay minerals in the volcanic-hosted Golden Cross epithermal Au deposit, New Zealand, have been investigated by petrography, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy/analytical electron microscopy (TEM/AEM) to determine the nature of these minerals in a hydrothermal ore deposit. Heterogeneity in the distribution of dioctahedral clays is observed from the hand-specimen scale to the TEM scale, indicating that primary rock textures and fluid pathways (related to rock type, porosity/permeability and fluid/rock ratios), in addition to temperature, are important factors controlling the distribution. As the proportion of illite in mixed-layer illite/smectite (I/S) decreases, TEM observations show decreasing layer stacking order, parallelism of packets, and packet size, and increasing apparent porosity. AEM structural data show a corresponding decrease in AlIV, AlVI, and K+, and an increase in Si, Ca2+, and Fetotal. The observations of this study indicate that local dioctahedral clay mineral reaction progress is controlled mainly by permeability and structure, but that this is superimposed on a predictable, system-wide clay mineral distribution that is controlled by temperature and fluid/rock ratio.

The total number of petroleum refineries in the United States continued to decline during 1950, and according to the Bureau of Mines annual refinery capacity survey there were 357 refineries January 1, 1951, compared with 367 a year ago. The total throughput capacity increased 267,344 barrels daily during the year to 6,963,644 barrels daily as of January 1, 1951, continuing the trend of the past several years to increase the throughput capacity of the refineries and decrease the number of plants. The capacity of the average refinery to process crude oil increased during 1950 from 18,246 barrels daily to 19,506. The Indiana-Illinois refinery district accounted for 110,175 barrels, or 41 percent of the total crude-oil capacity increase, the Oklahoma-Kansas district, 17 percent, the California district, 14 percent, the East Coast district, 13 percent, and the Louisiana Gulf Coast district, 12 percent. Slight declines ill crude-oil capacity were reported in the Texas Inland, Texas Gulf Coast, New Mexico, And Appalachian refinery districts. The 160,100 barrels of additional crude-oil capacity that was building January 1, 1951, represents an increase of 10 percent over the year earlier figure. The only completely new refinery listed as under construct ion at the beginning of 1951 is located at Superior, Wisconsin. Other new construction involves enlargement of existing refineries. Plans for at least five additional new refineries are under consideration, and construction is expected to begin during the current year.

The accumulation of thorium and/or uranium by various microorganisms from a solution containing thorium and/or uranium at pH 3.5 was examined. Among the species tested, a high accumulation ability for thorium was exhibited by strains of gram-positive bacteria, such as Bacillus megaterium, B. subtilis, Micrococcus luteus, Rhodococcus erythropolis, and actinomycetes, such as Streptomyces levoris. On the other hand, though uranium was accumulated in small amounts from the solution containing both elements by all these microorganisms, actinomycetes, such as S. flavoviridis and S. levoris had relatively high uranium accumulation abilities. In these high performance thorium- and uranium- accumulating microorganisms, S.levoris, which accumulated the largest amount of uranium from the solution containing only uranium at pH 3.5, could accumulate about 300 µmol thorium and 133 µmol uranium per gram dry wt. of microbial cells from a solution containing both thorium and uranium at pH 3.5. After this screening, uranium accumulation using microorganisms isolated from uranium mines, among which some strains of bacteria were found to possess an extremely high uranium accumulating ability. The microbial biomass may thus be considered for use as an accumulating agent for the removal and recovery of uranium that may be present in metallurgical effluents, mine tailings, seawater and other sources. Recently, hundreds of micro-organisms existing in uranium deposits located in North America, Australia, and Japan for their ability to accumulate large amounts of uranium, and found some new strains which accumulated large amounts of uranium, such as Lactobacillus and Bacillus sp. from Japanese and Arthrobacter and Bacillus sp. from the United States uranium deposits. These bacterial strains can accumulate about 2500 µmol uranium per gram dry wt. of microbial cells within one hour. These microbial cells can remove uranium from the uranium refining wastewater with a high efficiency. The accumulation of uranium from a solution (pH 5.8) by microorganisms contained Arthrobacter nicotianee, which is a similar strain mentioned above Arthrobacter sp., was examined. Among the 76 strains of 69 species tested (23 bacteria, 20 actinomycetes, 18 fungi, and 15 yeasts), high uranium accumulation ability was exhibited by strains of the bacteria, A. nicotianae, B. subtilis, and M. luteus. A. nicotianae cells, which showed the best performance, could accumulate about 698 mg uranium (2.58 mmol) per gram dry wt. of microbial cells.

J.B. Gwiazda's article deals with an interesting problem that has not been studied thoroughly up to now. Gwiazda has proposed a technical solution that eliminates horizontal load imposed by the supports on the roof. That load is due to a discrepancy between the trajectories of the canopy and the overlying strata. It is true that the improved lemniscate guidance system proposed by Gwiazda could eliminate the horizontal load but, on the other hand, it would represent a higher cost of the supports, and it would complicate the already complicated mechanism of powered supports. That is why we must be convinced that the proposed improvement is actually needed. From that point of view, the following questions should be elucidated. As shown in Fig. 1, the point O travels along the curve a, which produces horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the coal face. As stated by Gwiazda, "such a high load is capable of destroying the roof above the support, causing rock debris to be scattered around the face." The results of our measurements carried out in coal mines of the Czechoslovak part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin show that the convergence in the modern type of powered supports does not exceed several millimeters (not more than 10) per hour. Similar conclusions were drawn from field measurements performed in the Polish part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (see S. Romanowicz and H. Szopka in Proceedings, Scientific and Technical Symposium Simmex '85, Katowice, Poland, pp. 73 -83). The small vertical closure of the supports also induces a small horizontal displacement of the canopy. In addition to this, the transmission of forces between the roof and the canopy is influenced by the layer of debris on it, i.e., the canopy slides without imposing a greater horizontal load on the roof. This was deduced from field measurements of Voest-Alpine F 4/4600 powered supports equipped with rams instead of the common front lemniscate links (denoted as 1 in Fig. 5). In these supports, the pressurizing of the space of piston rod (la in Fig. 5) causes the rams to close, which induces horizontal load on the roof in a direction toward the coal face. After the setting of a support unit, the pressure in the piston rod space was found to drop, frequently to zero, because the small horizontal sliding between the canopy and the debris or inside the debris caused the horizontal reaction from the roof to fall to zero, although the debris were pressurized by vertical setting load. As a consequence, there was no horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof. A rise of the horizontal load was recorded only after the passage of the shearer and during lowering of the adjacent units. Thorough information on the results of the afore- mentioned field measurement is given in the paper, "Analysis of the performance of shield powered supports installed in a thick seam," published in Mechanizacja i automatyzacja gornictwa, 1982, No. 12, pp. 38-46. An English translation of the paper is available from the author. We have deduced from our observations that horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof in the direction toward the coal face is useful for roof control because it limits the displacement of the immediate roof toward the gob particularly during the rise working. We came to the conclusion that horizontal load on the roof toward the coal face should be induced on purpose. Could Mr. Gwiazda prove with the results of field measurements his contrary opinion? Has the small horizontal displacement of the canopy toward the face actually had an adverse effect on the roof? As shown in Fig. 2, during the setting of a support unit, the canopy imposes a horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the gob. In this case, I share Gwiazda's opinion that the horizontal load could have an adverse effect on the roof. Nevertheless, two important circumstances were neglected - the horizontal compliance of the supports and the interaction of adjacent units. The question of the compliance was analyzed precisely by I. Krumnacker in Gluckauf -Forschungshefle, 1984, NO. 5, pp. 219-223. The following tables summarize data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in these tables is what is termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines. Because of inadequacies in the statistics available, some series deviate from the foregoing definition. For copper, gold, lead, silver, tin, and zinc, the quantities are recorded on a mine basis (as the recoverable content of ore sold or treated). However, the values assigned to these quantities are based on the average selling price of refined metal, not the mine value. Mercury is measured as recovered metal and valued at the average New York price for the metal. The values shown are in current dollars, with no adjustments made to compensate for changes in the purchasing power of the dollar.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the feasibility of removing heavy metals from mineral-process waste streams by precipitation with lignochemicals and humic acids. Lignochemicals are by products from the paper industry, while humic acids are obtained by caustic treatment of peat, subbituminous coal, and lignite. These high-molecular-weight organic materials have many functional groups, which can coordinate and form innercomplex salts with heavy metals that are crystalline precipitates. Filtering of a humic-acid-or lignochemical-treated solution or waste stream containing these precipitates removes the heavy metal sequstrates. Tests were conducted with two lignochemical samples, three humic acid samples, lime (CaO), and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) in which increasing amounts of these additives were reacted with 50 mL of solution containing Fe3+ , Al3+, Cr3+, Pb2+, Cu2+, Cd2+, Zn2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Mn2+, and Hg1+. At the appropriate pH, greater than 90-and 99-pct removal was achieved for these 11 heavy metal ions from the 10-and lOO-ppm solutions, respectively, using lignochemicals and humic acids. Removal efficienC)' with these organic materials is better than that with CaO, especially for the more toxic ions, Hg1+, Cd2+, and Pb2+. Unlike the precipitates formed with NaOH or CaO, those with lignochemicals and humic acids are compact and noncolloidal. The volume of their sludge is sharply lower than that of the finely dispersed lime or soda precipitates; thus, their removal in settling tanks or by simple filtration is enhanced.

Researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) studied the impact of an unregulated dust control technology (the Helmet-CAM) and a regulated dust control technology (the continuous personal dust monitor) within a sociotechnical system (STS) framework to mitigate respirable dust sources. The results address how to best incorporate the overarching principles of meta-design STS during the technology integration process. Specifically, quantitative and qualitative data show that a prominent focus on the social factors within an STS framework could help reduce organizational unpredictability and may improve communication within the system to help reduce technology adoption time.

Pt-Al-X alloys have shown good mechanical properties and adequate oxidation resistance. Starting from a promising Pt-Al-Cr alloy, the influence of Ni additions was investigated. After ageing finely dispersed precipitates are observed. Nb, Ta, Ti and Re increase strength when added as partial substitute for Al. Minor additions of B increase creep resistance and rupture time remarkably, owing to strengthening of the grain boundaries. The evolution of the alloy development programme as well as selected properties of the multi-component Pt-base alloys are presented.

"A380 alloy has been widely employed to produce thin-wall components via high pressure die casting (HPDC). During HPDC processing, there is a significant problem of property variation even with the very stable and precision automated casting procedure. The enlarged variation lowers the component performance and affects the steady and uniform property distribution along the whole component. In this study, high shear melt conditioning technology was developed and applied to the melt prior to pouring into the shot sleeve. Experimental results show that with application of intensive melt shearing, the variation of elongation was decreased from 21.8to 13.9%, and yield strength variation was reduced from5.5to 3.6%. The improved property variation is attributed to enhanced nucleation both in shot sleeve and the die-cavity, and to the improved distribution of porosity and secondary phases as a benefit of high shear induced grain refinement. With application of high shear, large number of the Spinel phase (MgAl2O4) particles with double size distribution in average diameter of 80and 300nm were formed. Due to the good orientation relationship and small misfit between alpha Al and MgAl2O4, the particles act as the effective nuclei in shot sleeve and die cavity, respectively.INTRODUCTIONA380 alloy had been widely used for produce automotive components by cold chamber high pressure die casting(HPDC) processing, due to its relative good mechanical properties and cast ability performance, and more important most of A380 ingots were produced by recycled Al alloys. Therefore, to promote utility of A380 will contribute to reducing emission of CO2and to the lightweight of automotive industry as well. When cold chamber HPDC was employed to produce the components, the mechanical properties of A380 alloy always have a distribution range (named variation herein), or in other words the properties were not stable. The reason was ascribed to the typical solidification characteristics occurred in HPDC processing. During HPDC processing, there are three steps of melt movement. The first step is that the melt was poured into shot sleeve at temperature of about 680°C, in which shot sleeve was preheated by few shots of melt filling, or by heater. During step one, the first solidification of melt was happened in shot sleeve and about 20% solid made of coarse a-Al grains was formed(Li, Xiong, & Guo, 2016).Such kind of grains will retain in the final products and deteriorate the properties variation. The second step is that the melt was forced moving forward slowly by plunger at about 0.2–0.3m/s until the liquid melt front to the inner gate of mold. The third step is that the melt moved very fast to complete the filling of die cavity and refilling the solidification shrinkage by fast movement of plunger about 2–3m/s. The second solidification was occurred in die cavity and fine a-Al grains will be formed by high cooling rate at about 500–1000°C/s. From the solidification point of view, the grain size was dominated by nucleation and growth. When HPDC was employed to produce components, the melt quality becomes the priority factor to control the solidification process as the other casting parameters were kept at the same."

This is one of a series of papers being published by the Federal Bureau of Mines for the dissemination of information on methods and practices used in the mining and preparation of crushed stone for market requirements. Performance in terms of units of work or tons produced per machine and per operator man-hour are given whenever that information is available. Direct operating costs are useful for comparing different methods, and are, therefore, included if possible. In addition to the factual description of equipment and methods used, it is desirable to discuss the engineering reasons for the choices that have been made. This paper is particularly concerned with the opertions at the Columbia plant of Palmetto Quarries Co. of Columbia, S.C. The plant is about one-half mile east of the Congaree River and adjacent to the southwest corner of the city of Columbia. Rail access is by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, and by a spur strack of the Seaboard Airline Railroad.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a field study of mines and prospects of the Black Canyon RARE II area (No. 5061), Inyo County, California, from June to October 1981. Geological) geochemical, and geophysical studies were conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey. The Black Canyon RARE II area is east of Owens Valley and 6 mi east of Bishop, California. The principal mineral commodities are gold, silver, lead, zinc, and tungsten. Properties with resources in and adjacent to the area are listed in table 1; the locations are shown on figure 1.

As a group, the alloys of iron, nickel and carbon are, in application, one of the most versatile of the ferrous alloy family, and while many investigations have been made of their properties and structure only a few attempts have been made to show the microstructural relation over a wide range of composition. It is neccssary at once to be clear about the kind of structural relation with which we are concerned. The equilibrium diagram provides quantitative data regarding structural make-up and its variation with temperature, but equilibrium structures often are far different from the technologically significant ones. This is particularly true of steels and cast irons, and some of the most important cornponents of their structure may have no place in the diagram of equilibrium. The fugitive phases that result from transFormation are dealt with in a highly detailed and descriptive manner in. the S-curves originated by Bain. The present effort lies in a still different field, which is to portray the relation between sweeping changes in composition and in resultant structure, under controlled but nonequilib-rium conditions of thermal treatment. The Guilletl diagram presented in 1903 was the initial attempt at such a correlation and frequent references to this diagram can be found in the literature even though later work has shown it to require considerable modification. Kase2 published in 1925 a diagram that was based upon observations of furnace-cooled melts: At low carbon contents this diagram agreed fairly well with experience in showing pearlite to exist in alloys containing up to 6 per cent nickel, and completely austenitic steels at 24 to 28 per cent nickel. At high carbon contents, however, irons were indicated as being martensitic at around 2 per cent nickel and austenitic at 12 per cent nickel; these interpretations are open to serious question. Based upon experience with steels and cast iron, Wickenden3 suggested a diagram that agreed fairly well with Kase's in the steel range but which presented a wide departure from it in the higher-carbon, high-nickel regions. In its broad picture, the Wickenden diagram is an approach to "practical" structures. Reference may be made at this point to the efforts of Marsh5 to construct an iron-nickel-carbon equilibrium diagram by the coordination of scattered data, which are described at length in the monograph cited. None of these preceding attempts has appeared to meet the need for an exposition of the structural sequence that is encountered in traversing the nickel-steel nickel-cast-iron range under what might be called ordinary departures from equilibrium. Mine tailings, the byproduct of mining and mineral processing, are increasingly mass-produced as a result of increased demand for metals and minerals as well as the advancement in technology that allows for the exploitation of lower-grade ores. Lower grades can increase the volume of tailings that may contain new gangue minerals that should be evaluated for the presence of critical minerals and other valuable metals. The practice of reprocessing, while relatively new, is crucial to reducing environmental damages, obtaining valuable critical minerals from waste, and contributing to more sustainable repurposing and disposal methods. With the increase in tailings dam failures in recent years, there is a large motivating factor in remining and removing the potential hazard to benefit the safety of potentially impacted communities. In analyzing the perspectives of various domestic and international studies, this literature review will determine the feasibility of reprocessing and reutilizing mine tailings waste for a more sustainable future while exploring current practices that have benefitted ecosystems and communities.

The report covers several aspects of mine safety ground systems, primarily for underground coal mines. The design of a combined ground fault-ground check monitoring system is presented. An analysis is made of grounding systems for dc shuttle cars. Complete resistance data and results of physical inspections of self-salting ground rods are presented. A detailed resistance and economic analysis is presented for the use of composite materials for building inexpensive and effective ground beds in high-resistivity areas. The desireability of penetrating the coal seam with a borehole safety ground is investigated. A report is made of a Mine Substation Grounding and Bonding Workshop.

Over the past 15 years, numerous pressure oxidation plants for pretreatment of gold ores and concentrates have been installed throughout the world. While this technology is now established, it suffers in terms of the complex engineering and operational characteristics inherent in utilization of high temperatures (i.e. up to 225oC) and high pressures (i.e. > 3000 kPag). This paper outlines the application of an industrially proven pressure leaching methodology utilizing nitrogen species catalyzed pressure leaching and alkaline sulfide gold leaching. As such, it stands as an economic and engineering advancement in pressure leaching and non-cyanide treatment of gold ores and concentrates. In particular, the technology offers significant technical and economic advantages over traditional pressure oxidation and cyanide gold recovery in the treatment of gold bearing chalcopyrite ores and concentrates. An example of this will application will be delineated in this paper.

THE paper by C. H., Lieb on the "Economics of Oil-Producing Practice" (June issue, M. & M.) contains much food for thought. The engineers should be gratified that an executive with Mr. Lieb's. responsibility should recognize their standing in the industry. Yet after giving them that recognition, he proceeds to spur them on to greater accomplishments by pointing out that their job is only partly done and in some instances poorly done. The operating policies in this paper when applied to new pools with flowing wells are sound. Neither do I take exception to their application to pumping wells. But I do wish to comment on what lie says about price when applied to the many more wells that are approaching abandonment that is, the small producing wells. Mr. Lieb states in effect that higher prices would be detrimental from the long range viewpoint. I doubt that the present prices of crude will provide an ample return from the hundreds of thousands of small wells that have possibilities of substantial recovery by means of water-flooding, repressuring with gas, and air drive. Probably expenditure for experimental work can he justified, but at this time it must usually be considered as experimental. Recently I visited a property where it was estimated that $250,000 would be spent on a 160-acre tract for flooding purposes. The rate of r e t n r n and amount of profit at today's prices are uncertain. It can be argued that if this type of recovery is not economic with crude at $1 then it can he delayed as it is now possible to secure economically an ample supply of crude from our flush fields. But these old fields still retain large quantities of crude in a dormant state, and should not he abandoned per-

In 1986, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied a 20,500-acre part of the 104,085-acre Rincon Wilderness Study Area (OR-002-082) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The wilderness study area is located in Harney County, OR, about 12 miles west from Fields. No mineral resources were identified within the study area. A literature search found no records of mining or minerals exploration, nor did a ground search find any evidence of mining-related activity. Of seven alluvial samples taken from the major drainages of the study area, all were barren except one. This sample, taken from a dry streambed along the southern boundary, contained $0.07 gold per cubic yard; however, this small amount of gold is of no economic significance, and the source is probably outside the study area. The Pueblo-Steens mining district extends to within 4 miles east of the study area. No evidence of geological environments similar to those that were responsible for the formation of resources or occurrences of metals and nonmetals within the district is known within the study area.
