"Deformation Banding ( DB ) in cold rolled mild steel has been experimentally established by microstructure investigation. Deformation banding model includes such deformation mode when it is applied to rolling texture simulation. The cause for the occurrence of deformation banding is the reduction of the total work for plastic deformation through a relaxation of the deformation constraints. In the first DB model, all grains are assumed to band from the first deformation step. Such an unrealistic assumption has been eliminated in the new model by the introduction of a banding criterion based on an energy minimizing approach. The prediction is closer to the measured texture by applying banding criterion and setting critical resolved shear stresses (CRSS) ratio for { 110 } and { 112 } slip modes to 0.85.IntroductionBased on the continuum theory of plastic flow and deformation mechanism of crystallographic dislocation slip, Taylor's FC ( Full Constrain ) theory [1] has been widely used in texture modeling. As the process of cold rolling of sheet materials produces a microstructure consisting of elongated or equiaxed flat grain or cell, the ""lath"" and ""pancake"" relaxed constraints ( RC ) models [2, 3] were introduced as the successful improvements over the classical FC model. It has been also recognized that crystals may split into different orientations during deformation and the term deformation banding is used to describe such deformation processes [4, 5]. Lee et al. [6, 7] pointed out that the success of the RC theory in predicting textures depends on the physical processes of deformation banding. They developed so called Deformation Banding ( DB ) model by considering DB in the longitudinal plane to be accounted for by the RC method and allowing DB in the rolling plane. DB model was applied to simulate the texture development in bee case [8], the predicted bee rolling textures are in reasonable agreement with the measured textures. In the first DB model, however, all grains are assumed to band right upon the first deformation step. A banding criterion was formulated [7] which states that DB will occur if the work used in DB model is less than that in RC model. Such criterion has been incorporated into the original DB model for texture simulation and is referred to as DBC ( Deformation Banding Criterion ) model."

"The high density sludge process (HDS) is a commercially proven acid rock drainage wastewater treatment process that is based on acid neutralization and metal precipitation. Previous studies have established that metal removal efficiencies in precipitation-based wastewater treatment applications can be improved through metal ion adsorption on ferrihydrite and/or aluminummodified ferrihydrite. This study was conducted specifically to determine whether the metals removal efficiencies at an existing industrial facility could be improved by promoting ferrihydrite and/or aluminum-modified ferrihydrite precipitation during the pH adjustment stages of the HDS process. The metal tenors of the treated wastewater samples are compared with those obtained through baseline experiments, which were designed to simulate the conventional HDS operation. The subject metals were: aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, copper, iron, manganese, nickel, and zinc.IntroductionThe HDS process is commercially proven ARD wastewater treatment technology that involves raising the wastewater pH by adding hydrated lime, caustic soda, or another alkaline substance. In addition to neutralizing the acidity, many dissolved metals precipitate as pH is elevated. Waste volume is minimized by capturing and immobilizing the precipitated solids.However, ARD streams characteristically contain multiple dissolved metal species. The response of various metals to pH adjustment in the HDS process is neither uniform nor quantitative, so minor to trace concentrations typically remain in the treated wastewater following solid-liquid separation. The effectiveness and applicability of the process would be improved if a means were found to further reduce the metal concentrations.Previous research and industrial applications have proven that metal ion adsorption on ferrihydrite (FH) and/or aluminum-modified ferrihydrite (AMF) increase metal removal efficiencies. Ferrihydrite and AMF are considered ideal for cation and anion adsorption from an aqueous solution at the appropriate pH [1]. Ferrihydrate adsorption of dissolved heavy metals is widely practiced throughout the world [2, 3]. It is established that FH and AMF effectively adsorb As contained in aqueous solutions [4]. Arsenic removal by adsorption on FH is the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Best Demonstrated Available Technology [5]. Twidwell and Leonhard also demonstrated that heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Ni, and Zn) are effectively removed from solution by coprecipitation/adsorption using AMF and FH [6]."

The solvent extraction for gold from alkaline cyanide solutions has been investigated using LIX 79 guanidine-based extractant. Different variables that could affect the extraction system were evaluated: equilibrium time, aqueous pH and extractant and modifier concentrations. The extraction isotherms of the aurocyanide complex with respect to other cyanoanions were compared and the following order of selectivity Au>Ag>Cu>Zn>>Fe was observed. From the pH isotherms it was found that aurocyanide can be extracted in alkaline media and a better separation with respect to other cyanoaniones was obtained in the range of 10.5 < pH < 11.2. Better selectivity was observed when using LIX 79 and tridecanol at 10% and 5% vol, respectively. Stripping gold from loaded organic was carried out at pH>12, using NaOH and NaCN solutions.

"Dispersed and flocculated alumina (non-spherical particles) slurries were prepared by pH controlling with HCL Spray-drying of these resulted in dimpled granules with a smooth surface and high density, and spherical granules with rough surface and low-density, respectively. Detailed characterization on granules and their compacts includes: SEM observation, density measuring (mercury porosimetry and Archimedes's Principle) and liquid immersion optical microscopy. Compaction of these granules originated a larger particles rearrangement in the samples made with the spherical granules than with the dimpled granules. This was verified through the orientation of alumina particles, which was pronounced in the compact made with the former granules.IntroductionOn immersing a ceramic powder in water, the surface usually acquires a charge by interaction with ionic species in solution. The charge is affected by pH and the electrolyte concentration of the water. 1 The dispersion in a slurry is achieved through the interaction of charges on the particle surface with the media. In the ceramic processing, especially in the process of casting, the dispersion of slurry has been one of the most important topics studied for many years. Recently the attention is paid on its role in the pressing. The granule characteristics are governed by the dispersion state of slurry. Takahashi et al2 , Tsubaki et al3 and Walker et al4 showed that the granules from dispersed slurry were dimpled and of high density, while granules from flocculated slurry were spherical and of low density. This variation in the granules characteristics should have a marked effect on the structure of compact.This paper presents the influence of the dispersion state of alumina slurry on the granules characteristics and also on the internal structure of compacts. Different dispersion states were elaborated by adjusting pH of the slurry. In this method, the particles are dispersed or flocculated only by the effect of surface charging, and thus some secondary effect such as the steric hindrance from an electrolyte dispersant is avoided. The characteristics of granules and compacts are examined with SEM, density measurements by mercury porosimetry and by Archimedes's Principle and liquid immersion optical microscopy. This novel microscopy provides various important information on packing structure of particles, such as their orientation. 5"

"A hybrid porous metal with nano-micro double scale pore size and regular-random bimodal porous structure has been fabricated by unidirectional solidification of a lotus-type alloy followed by dealloying treatment to the base alloy. The base alloy selected is a Cu-Mn binary alloy. The lotus-type porous Cu-Mn alloy with straight pores of several hundred micrometers in diameter was manufactured by unidirectional solidification with a mould casting process. Dealloying treatment was then done to the lotus-type porous structure of Cu-Mn alloy. The solid Cu-Mn alloy wall of the lotus-type porous structure was transformed to random porous structure of dozens to hundreds nanometers. The influence of corrosion parameters, such as the current and time in electrochemical corrosion, temperature and corrosion agent in chemical corrosion, on the nano-porous structure formed has been studied systematically.1. IntroductionA hybrid porous metal is a kind of cellular structure with different porous or cellular forms inside, which possesses special properties and can be applied in many fields as fuel cells, catalysis, sensors, etc. Several means have been developed to fabricate this kind of porous material [1-2]. In this paper, a novel process of Gasar plus dealloying is introduced to fabricate a new form of hybrid porous metal with nano-micro double size and regular-random bimodal structure.The Gasar process, also called the metal-gas eutectic directional solidification, that invented by Shapovalov [3] in Ukraine and now in USA some twenty years ago, is used to fabricate porous metals with regularly aligned pores basing on the solubility difference of a gaseous element in solid and liquid metal. Nakajima and his colleagues [4] in Japan studied this process further and called this kind of structure a lotus-type porous metal. They put more attention to various fabrication techniques and properties of lotus-type porous metals. Li heading a group [5-6] in P.R. China studied the mechanism of Gasar process and process controlling techniques. The Gasar pore structure and porosity can be controlled by processing parameters, and a regular Gasar structure with oriented pores distributing uniformly in the solid matrix can be obtained under optimized processing parameters."

"1. Introduction The North-Bohemian Basin area is known for its largest Czech brown coal deposit. About 50% brown coal reserves have been exploited in the North-Bohemian Basin by the mining company of Severoceske doly, a.s. (North Bohemian Mines, j.s.c.) today. The opencast mining of brown coal naturally led to vast landscape damages. Therefore reclamation work has acquired great significance. The specific feature of Severoceske doly, a.s. mining is the fact that the mining has been realized in two geologically absolutely different localities. This fact demands even rather different methods of reclamations. The main problem at Doly Bilina localities is the occurrence of overburden rocks from the series of rocks of coal seams. These rocks are texturally light but large amounts of coal (cca 5 %) and sulphur (cca below 3 %) which makes the soil reaction extremely acid. If they appear on the surface of the dump, they create a phytotoxic area, reclamation of which requires special methods. Rocks from Doly Nastup Tusimice localities are more suitable to reclamation use, but texturally extremely heavy rocks with large fraction of physical clays appear there that can generate a sterile soil area. Their reclamation requirements are completely different from those on Doly Bilina phytotoxic areas. That is the reason of the application of some non – traditional restoration methods. This report briefly summarises the experience in application of fertilizable soils, power plant stabilizer, power plant ash and aerial sowing of charlock. The results are documented by the monitoring of the physical, mineralogical and pedological parameters of rocks in testing areas.2. Properties of Overburden Rocks in Opencast Mines Bilina and Libous The reclamation work methodology in the North Bohemian Basin is above all determined by the properties of overburden rocks which occur in the top horizon of the reclaimed sites. The research of the rocks reclamation properties dealt with four current mining localities in the central part of the basin. It concerned the Bilina and Libous mines. This chapter states the stratigraphic status properties of these sites with respect to reclamation availability. The total status of the area of interest is shown in the figure No. 1."

"The oxidative dissolution of copper from refractory minerals, such as chalcopynte, represents a technological challenge that has occupied hydrometallurgists for more than half a century. Innumerable processes have been suggested, but the majority operates at high temperatures or employs corrosive media. The origin of this refractory nature is the formation of passivating phases of iron(III) or copper. One option is to add non-corrosive ligands that complex these metal ions, thereby facilitating their dissolution. In the present work, the effect of acetone in sulfuric acid solutions was studied. The initial experiments were on chalcopynte carbon paste electrodes using cyclic voltammetry, where greater reactivity was observed. Later, leaching tests with hydrogen peroxide, cupric sulfate and ozone and, as oxidants, were performed. High extractions were achieved in three hours at 50°C. The solid residues contained the iron in the form of Fe203 and FeOOH.IntroductionChalcopyrite is the most important mineral of polysulfide copper ores [1] and accounts for approximately 70% of the world's copper reserves [2]. Currently, the copper present in chalcopyrite is extracted mainly by pyrometallurgical processes, which generate environmental concerns because of the formation of SO2 gas and submicron particulates [3]. The development of a less aggressive hydrometallurgical process for the extraction of copper would constitute a possible solution to these problems. For that reason, studies of the dissolution behavior of chalcopyrite are of great technological importance [4], However, the proposed oxidative leaching routes for chalcopyrite, generally at high pressures and temperatures, have not been implemented on an industrial scale, because of the elevated costs required to equal the high copper extractions obtained in thermal processes. These extreme leaching conditions are required because of the refractory nature of chalcopyrite. Passivation has been used to explain this phenomenon, although researchers have disagreed on the composition of the layer, which is various have assumed to be sulfur, copper sulfides, and iron-bearing jarosites or hydroxides [5]. If the latter compounds are the cause, an alternative solution would be the use of polar organic solvents in the oxidative leach to decrease the formation of the passivating iron layer. In this work, the influence of acetone on the oxidative leaching of a chalcopyrite concentrate at room conditions is explored."

"The amount of waste of Polystyrene (PS) foams is increasing in last years due to their use in insulation, protecting and, storing many different food products. Conventional methods of recycling such as crushing and shrinking by heated air or frictional heat have the disadvantages of molecular degradation, resulting in a reduction of the quality of the recycled polymer. Dissolution and shrinking with suitable solvents is one of the cheapest and more efficient ways of polystyrene recycling but in the process of the solvent recovery by distillation a certain degree of molecular degradation is produced. In this way, CO2 supercritical technology appears as an interesting alternative for the elimination of solvent. This work proposes a global process to polystyrene recycling in two steps: a polystyrene dissolution with a suitable “green” solvent followed by its elimination by supercritical tecnologhy. In order to develop a “green process” the constituents of essential oils, limonene, terpinene, cymene, and phellandrene, are selected as the most appropriated solvents. Introduction In the last years, disposal of the non-biodegradable plastic wastes has been recognized as a serious environmental problem. Recycling these wastes has great interest in order to prevent the environmental pollution and to preserve natural sources (1, 2, 3). Since the Polystyrene foams (PS) is one of the most used foam in isolation, protecting and food storage most of recycling work is concerned with this polyolefin (4). The two main alternatives for treating polymer wastes are energy recycling, where wastes are incinerated, and mechanical recycling (5). Environmental argumentations such as toxic emissions are building up a public resistance against incineration process (6). Mechanical recycling is a popular recovery path for manufacturers and is carried out on single-polymer waste streams. Any way, the market for recycled products can only be found if the quality is close to that of the original. Unfortunately the process of classification and further recovery of these wastes makes them often more expensive than virgin plastic (7, 8). Solvent extraction is one of the cheapest and more efficient ways for PS recycling. If it is done in house of waste producers the separation between plastics could be easy and effective and the transport costs would be eliminated."

"The influence of an unconventional lance with a central nozzle on the multiphase fluid flow in a steelmaking converter is studied in this work by means of computer simulations. The lance has four peripheral supersonic nozzles and a vertical central nozzle. Besides, the oxygen flow in the central nozzle is considered independent from the main oxygen supply. Transient two-dimensional numerical simulations were carried out considering just molten steel and gaseous oxygen as the existing phases. Numerical results show that bath agitation and droplet generation are enhanced as a result of the central nozzle. However, the performance of this lance strongly depends on the distance of the lance tip to the molten steel surface and the velocity of the oxygen jet.IntroductionCurrently, two thirds of the world crude steel is produced through the steelmaking oxygen converter [1]. Given the unquestionable economic importance of this technology, any improvement or optimization proposal is welcome. In the majority of current oxygen converters a top oxygen supersonic jet is blown onto the molten steel through a water-cooled lance to eliminate by oxidation some impurities such as carbon and phosphorus. Conventional lances have inclined peripheral nozzles whose number depends on the converter capacity. During the process, a large amount of gases evolves, forming metal droplets and a metal-slag-gas emulsion [2]. The droplets and the resultant emulsion increase the reaction interfacial area, promoting in this way carbon removal and dephosphorization of the molten steel bath [3]. However, during the blowing stage, the emulsion rises towards the lance and converter mouth and frequently forms layers which accumulate in the lance, reducing the life of the lance tip [4, 5]. It is possible that some freezing of the molten metal occurs due to the low oxygen injection temperature, however there are no reports on this. Besides, frequently undesirable operating phenomena such as spitting and slopping may arise as a result of inappropriate blowing practices or bad lance design. In the oxygen steelmaking industry, novel lances design are needed in order to enhance the decaburization rate and the slag formation and, at the same time, preventing operating practices that decrease productivity and move away the shop from safety standards."

"Construction and demolition waste (CDW) is no dangerous material resulting from construction, and demolition of houses, large building structures, roads, bridges, piers, and dams. It is possible to recycle these materials, to reduce environmental impacts, and to reuse them in construction sector. To evaluate in a correct way the possibility to reuse this material it is important to lead laboratory tests to assess the proprieties and quality characteristics. European, Italian and British ad hoc Committees had elaborated specific Standards, to evaluate Geometrical, Physical, and Chemical requirements of recycled materials. A research was carried on to define the guidelines for laboratory tests, their suggested values and quality standards. The Construction and Demolition Waste Construction and demolition waste (CDW) is no dangerous, uncontaminated material resulting from construction, renovation, repair, and demolition of houses, large building structures, roads, bridges, piers, and dams. CDW waste is made up of wood, steel, concrete, gypsum, masonry, railway ties, roofing materials, carpeting, insulation, plaster, metal, and asphalt, and all waste included in CER Code 17. In particular Demolition wastes are defined as materials resulting from the demolition, instead Construction wastes are defined as waste materials resulting during construction process or in pre-manufacturing construction industry. Environmental problems In a lot of cases Construction and Demolition Waste materials were discharged in landfills, these are filling up with CDW and others, and some of them will close in the near future. In addition, illegal dumping of CDW debris can result in future health risks, decreased property values, cleanup costs and enviromental problems. The typical environmental impacts generated by CDW dumps are: 1- Dust problem, which causes air pollution, as will as forming dirty areas. 2- Uncontrolled locations, that will encourage the disposal of other waste types with the usual construction wastes leading to an environmental disaster. 3- The degradation and deterioration of the coastal lands and the natural protectorates. 4- The loss of aesthetic features. 5- Occupation of large areas, causing extra hauling costs. Therefore, it is wise to find other alternatives, like reuse or recycling, other than landfilling CDW debris or illegal dumps, because a proper management and the reduction of CDW amount can save money, conserve resources, and preserve the environment."

The viscosity of Fe-Cr-Mn-Ni TRIP/TWIP (Transformation Induced Plasticity, Twinning Induced Plasticity) steel with varied nickel content is investigated using a vibrating finger viscometer. The viscosity of the melt is calculated from the change in power input in the field coil by an immersed finger into the liquid steel to maintain a constant peak-to-peak amplitude of the sine wave of oscillator compared to the idle state. Nickel content in steel is varied from 3 wt% to 9 wt%. The dynamic viscosity (η) at 1600 °C for 3 wt% Ni is 3.73±0.14 mPas, for 6 wt% Ni 3.50±0.03 mPas, and for 9 wt% Ni 3.93±0.09 mPas. There is a kink from low to high nickel content in viscosity values of Fe-Cr-Mn-Ni alloys. This phenomenon can be explained by a change in coordination number in the melt, as reported for Fe-Ni binary system in literature. The availability of viscosity data delivers relevant input to model free fall atomization processes of FeCrMnNi alloys.

A theoretical procedure is demonstrated for calculating two-dimensional binary cellular single-valued interfaces and extended to triple-valued (remelt) shapes. The numerical calculations for the single-valued local equilibrium problem which yield unique shapes as functions of the supersaturation parameter a and the partition coefficient k are reviewed. The cell amplitude L and wavelength A scale identically as the inverse velocity to the 112 power and the aspect ratio r is a constant equal to 312, independently of a and k for a < 0.5.. For 0.5 < a < m, L, A and r decrease asymptotically to zero indicating the finite amplitude nature of the instability at a = 1 and the existence of sub-marginal states which converge to a flat interface at a- m (Glv- m). Scaling comparisons between equilibrium single-valued and triple-valued and deep-rooted non- equilibrium cells are made.

Spent Hawaii nut shell was converted into a high-quality activated carbon via steam physical activation. Analysis of the experiment including activation temperature, activation duration, steam flow rate on the adsorption capability and yield of activated carbon were identified. Response surface methodology showed that the activation temperature was identified as 866 , an activation duration of 36 min and a steam flow rate of 2.5mL/min with the methylene blue adsorption number of 195 mg/g and yield of 77.75%. The key parameters that characterize quality of the activated carbon such as the BET surface area, total pore volume and average pore diameter were estimated to be 1125m2 /g, 0.94mL/g and 5.21 nm, respectively. Additionally, by the SEM analyses of char and activated carbon, the surface of activated carbon has large number of pores of irregular and heterogeneous morphology.

The ability of Streptomyces viridosporus in sorbing heavy metals from wastewater has been investigated. It was found out that the biomass of the soil microorganism could be used in sorbing Pb2+, Cu2+, Zn2+ and Ni2+ ions from acidic solutions of metal ion concentration between 10 and 100 ppm. Over 99% of Pb2+ and 88% of Cu2+ ions were sorbed from wastewater of concentration 10 ppm with Ni2+ and Zn2+ recording values below 50% for a contact period of 4 hours. The quantity of metal ions sorbed per gram of biomass from the wastewater was in the order Pb2+ > Cu2+ > Ni2+ > Zn2+ and this is related to their electronegativities. Biosorption was sensitive to variations in pH and in the range investigated; metal binding was optimum at 5.5. About 63% antimony was also sorbed from dilute cyanide solution.

"This paper describes several applications of Electrical Capacitance Tomography (ECT) in gassolid two phase flows. A new image reconstruction algorithm was evaluated by both simulation and experiments. It is then applied to the online measurement of solids distributions in square circulating fluidized beds (CFBs) and good results were obtained. From the measurement of solids distributions in the bottom zone of a CFB, a bubbly fluidization pattern is identified. A cross-correlation technique was combined with the solids concentration measurements to obtain the flow rate through the dip leg of the cyclone, i.e. the circulating rate of a test CFB. The same· technique was applied in a dense phase pneumatic transport pipe provides the solids concentration, and the flow rate of a wavy gas-solids flow.IntroductionElectrical capacitance tomography (ECT) has been developed for imaging multiphase distributions in the 90's of the ·last century. It is a non-intrusive method. The principle of ECT can be firefly described as follows:Firstly ECT uses a number of electrodes to surround the measuring zone, depicted by Fig. I. The capacitances between the electrodes are measured in turn and an array C is obtained that contains a total number of m independently measured capacitances. Meanwhile the measuring zone is virtually divided into a grid of n pixels, represented by an array G, named the image vector, the gray level of each pixel represents the local value of the concentration of the material. As the material distribution will be reflected by the capacitances between each pair of electrodes, such distributions can be reconstructed according to the measured capacitance, a process called image reconstruction. A common image reconstruction method is called linear-backprojection (LBP). "The basic concept of New Rheocasting (NRC) is described and the application of wrought alloys with this process is discussed. Practical experiments with the aluminium alloy AIMgSi I are explained. For this alloy the proper NRC - casting temperature was determined by using Thermo Cale - computer software and DT A and the essential processing conditions are shown. In the experiments the melt was taken from an aluminium holding furnace and cast into NRC steel cups. After controlled cooling the resulting slurries were cast into a 4-step die on an UBE HVSC 350 Squeeze Casting machine. The characteristic microstructural values such as grain size and shape factor were measured and compared with classical casting alloys. The influence of the wall thickness of the step part (6 mm, 10 mm and 14 mm) on the microstructure is described. Tensile properties in different heat treatment states are compared with characteristic prope1ties of the same alloys in forged condition. The ew Rheocasting - process CNRC)The NRC process is a recently developed new semi-solid processing method which allows the production of pore-free, pressure tight components.In the NRC process a fu lly liquid, but only slightly superheated melt is taken from a holding furnace and poured into specially designed steel crucibles, which are placed on a carousel next to the Vertical Squeeze Casting machine. In this ,NULL,slurry maker'· globul ar a-Al grains grow, following forced homogeneous nucleation at the cup wall [ 1, 2]. In the few minutes during which the melt is cooled to sem i-so lid processing temperature, a stable ske leton of a-Al phase forms. "Product design engineers select from a wide range of materials and combine them into multimaterial product designs. These include various materials (metals and non-metals) which are complexly integrated (e.g. welded, glued, alloyed, layered). The recycling/recovery rate of consumer products are determined by the different materials and alloys used, but also by the particle size and multi-material particle composition after shredding (combination of materials due to design). Eco-design (for recycling) and Design for Recycling (DfR) can only be conducted if the interconnectivity of material/metal in various unliberated materials is accounted for and its effect on material and energy recovery can be linked back to design. This paper will discuss the basic principles of these DfR models and it is shown how these tools (i) are linked Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) software, (ii) affect conceptual design specifications of products, (iii) integrate the complex detail of the recycling system and recyclate quality and hence (iv) make recycling an integrated part of the product system. Furthermore, it is shown how these assessment tools and models can be applied for benchmarking of the recyclability and environmental damage created by the recycling of end-oflife consumer goods in order to e.g. (i) provide the (original) equipment manufacturer with knowledge and solutions to support product stewardship and Extended Producer Responsibility; (ii) create awareness of the consequences/benefits of design, products and recycling systems to manufacturer, designer, legislator, recycler etc.; and (iii) assist the consumer in their choice of consumer goods from an end-of-life point of view.IntroductionA first-principles basis is required in order to be able to simulate and predict the recycling/recovery behaviour of products facilitating Design for Recycling (DfR) and Eco- Design. The EPA and DOE have collaborated on a series of studies to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment technologies at stabilizing bulk elemental mercury and wastes containing high concentrations (i.e., with greater than 260 mglkg total mercury) and multiple forms of mercury. The data from these treatment demonstrations are intended to help EPA to determine if regulatory revisions to allow a stabilization alternative for high-mercury subcategory wastes are warranted. In addition to mercury-contaminated wastes, the disposal of bulk elemental mercury is of concern because of the excess quantity of mercury in the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) stockpile, as well as other potential sources of excess elemental mercury. The studies evaluated the effectiveness of several technologies at: I) stabilization of mercury in a "hard-to-treat" matrix; and 2) conversion of elemental mercury into a stable waste form for disposal. A surrogate waste was designed for the study on high-mercury wastes, which included an organic form of mercury, elemental mercury, and several mercury salts in an inorganic matrix. The surrogate waste and the bulk elemental mercury were treated by the vendors, and the treated waste forms evaluated for mercury Icachability, using both the TCLP and an automated, constant-pH leaching protocol. Constant pH leaching was conducted at pH 2,4,6,8 10 and 12 for 14 days at each pH. The leaching data demonstrate that the stability of the mercury in three treated waste forms varies widely across the pH range tested. Clearly, the stability of mercury in these treated waste forms will be highly dependant on the disposal conditions. The combination of site-specific disposal conditions and appropriate treatment technology must be considered as decisions are made about disposal of high-mercury wastes.

"A system analysis of the resource and environment management (water, energy etc) starts from its definition. Unfortunately, there is not a unique semantics of the mentioned concept. On these circumstances, in this paper the following issues are presented: 1.A short view on the existing concepts of management. 2.A new definition on the concept of management. It is considered as a complex and rational activity on human and natural resources ,environment etc, which starts from a analysis of infrastructure ,technology , etc, mission , alternatives , project etc. and ends to an optimal output. Basing on this definition, the management has two principal components: strategy and policy. The strategy is referred as a blue print program (the same definition as in Game Theory), which contains all the contingency alternatives. , while the policy is referred as a strategy applied into practice. The strategy is the first , while the policy is the second one. The best alternative of a policy is the project, Each strategy has one and only one project. The mentioned definition erases the differences between concept of policy and politics. Each strategy has its alternatives ,the next has its sub strategy and so on, i.e. whatever are going to be the strategy, there are a hierarchy composed by sub strategies up to the simplest strategies applied by a single individual (human beings or robots). The strategy objectives are necessary and sufficient conditions for its realization i.e . the strategy is an optimal activity, in which all resources are integrated and processed . Several strategies could be joined into one( for example the surface water strategies of the Balkan countries) . In this view, the strategy could be globalized into optimal way basing on different criteria’s as social, economic, environmental, their risks and effectiveness etc. etc An example from the water management illustrates the mentioned concepts."

The most common method for the concentration of cyanide in gold leach circuits is based on the titration of cyanide ions with silver ions. This can either be done manually as a titration with a visual end-point or by using one of several commercial cyanide analysers which are &apos;based on the same titration but use a potentiometric end point This method has &apos;its limitations in the case of some ores such as those containing high amounts of soluble copper and those that are treated at low (less than pH 9) pH values in that the titration results do not accurately reflect the concentration of cyanide which is available for the dissolution of gold. This paper will present the results of the development of a novel "active" cyanide analyser which is based on the rate, of the reaction between gold colloids and cyanide. Gold colloids have a deep red colour and can be very simply prepared and stored for extended periods of time when stabilized. t has been shown that colloidal gold behaves similarly to metallic gold, dissolving in aerated sodium cyanide solutions to give the colourless Au(CNh-ion, This allows the reaction between the colloids and cyanide to be monitored spectrophotometrically at 520 nm. An automated instrument has been developed around this concept which can analyse a filtered pulp stream every few minutes with periodic calibration using standard cyanide solutions, Results of test work on synthetic solutions and solutions derived from several Australian gold plants will be presented as will the results of a comparative evaluation with a commercial titration analyser on a local gold plant
