American mining companies operate many drum hoists that hoist from various depths with varying payloads. This paper will review the procedure of selecting optimum wire rope constructions for these existing hoisting installations. Selection for proposed installations along with recommended hoisting parameters will also be presented. To achieve this optimum rope performance, preventative and corrective maintenance procedures will be reviewed along with examples of rope problems and their causes.

LKAB's Kiruna mine, located above the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden, is one of the world's largest underground mines, and it is one of the most modern. The Kiruna orebody is a high-grade magnetite containing about 80% low-phosphorous iron ore and about 20% high-phosphorous iron ore in situ. The mining method used is large-scale sublevel caving. Due to the blending of high-phosphorous ore with low-phosphorous ore during the extraction process, only about 20% of the run-of-mine ore can be used for the mine's low-phosphorous product. The blending process is highly irregular and difficult for the mine-planning personnel to predict. An algorithm was developed that uses principles of gravity flow to predict the run-of-mine phosphorous grades from the in situ geologic block model. The model can be used for both long- and short-term predictions.

HISTORIACAL INTRODUCTION Mineral processing has three principle branches, to quote Taggart, "Ore Dressing, which comprises the methods of separation of solids in inorganic crude by means which do not affect substantial chemical change; Extractive Metallurgy, which utilizes chemical reactions for separations of constituents from solids in inorganic crude; and, Fuel Technology, which employs both physical and chemical methods for separating and rearrangement of liquid gaseous and solid components in crude oil and natural gas, tar sands, shale oil, or coal." The scope of this handbook covers the first two classifications, that is, "ore dressing" and "extractive metallurgy," which have been combined in one term: "mineral processing." For a brief history of the development of mineral processing, one could well refer to the Introduction, Sec. I of the Handbook of Mineral Dressing by Taggart, Froth Flotation, Principles of Mineral Dressing by Gaudin, and the original Richard's Ore Dressing, volume No. 1, first published in 1903-1905. In these references and the references given in them a coverage of the history of "ore dressing" can be found and studied at the reader's leisure. For the history of extractive metallurgy as well as ore dressing, the bibliography in General References, taken from a History of Ex¬tractive Metallurgy by F. Habashi, will give a good background for those who are interested in more detail on the history of metallurgy in general. Mineral processing covers a very wide field as is illustrated by the topics discussed in Part II of this handbook and dates back to the early history of man which started with the production and use of native minerals such as gold, silver, copper, mercury, and meteoric iron which were washed or picked from deposits on the surface of the earth and worked because of their malleability. Later, melting was discovered and then it was possible to cast objects of these metals, excluding mercury. The discovery of a method for reducing the metal¬lic oxide probably was developed from melting fragments of oxides or roasted sulfides with charcoal, so that the native metal could be produced in simple blast furnaces such as are used today in rural parts of Spain, China, and elsewhere. INTRODUCTION, CONCEPTS, AND MEASUREMENT Introduction Periods in the history of man, from his earliest appearance to the present, are often characterized by the principal materials used. In nearly all cases, the material or fuel is of mineral origin-stone, copper, bronze, iron, coal, and so forth-indicating the principal ingredient of the tools or source of power of the period. Each of these periods represented great improvement over the preceding one in terms of human well-being, as measured by population growth and other indicators (Cipolla, 1978). A major reason for the improvements in production and well-being was the nature of the material or fuel, each successively superior to the preceding, which made it possible to produce more food, fuel, shelter, and clothing with a given amount of labor. If we accept this well-documented description of economic progress as accurate, we may then turn to the consideration of two related questions concerning this development. The first, easily answered,-is why man spent long periods of time (millenia, in many cases) making tools from inferior materials, such as copper, instead of passing directly to superior materials, such as iron and steel. The second, closely related question, concerns the relation between the rate of economic growth and the quantity of mineral reserves available at any time. For the first question, the answer is that the technology required to discover, extract, and process each successive material had to be discovered and developed before the material could be used. Once the technology was available, the new material could be and was exploited widely, raising productivity-output per unit of labor- and consequent consumption per person. This familiar idea underlies a fundamental principle of the economics of resources, namely, at any time, available resources depend upon available technology. No mineral or other raw material is a resource unless the technology has been developed to utilize it. But once the technology is at hand, the new resources associated with it provide the means for economic growth and rising levels of living. This principle is subject to certain conditions. For example, governments or other institutions may prevent a mineral from being used, even though the technology is available. And, if a mineral is located in a remote place, transportation charges may make it uneconomic to exploit. Such minor qualifications do not, however, change the thrust of the argument that technology is the overriding determinant. With respect to the second question, it might seem apparent that the greater the quantity of reserves available, up to some point, the more economic growth will be facilitated. This line of reasoning leads to the conclusion that as re- serves are consumed the quantity available will be reduced and economic growth will eventually be restrained. Reasoning of this sort underlies much popular (and scholarly) thought, in which depletion of mineral and other resources is assumed to lead to constraints on economic growth, through higher materials costs and absolute limitations on materials use. The evaluation criteria for cost comparison of the Gearless Drive, also called Ringmotor or wrap-around motor, as variable-speed drive with a Twin Drive System using synchronous motors are reviewed. Both mechanical and electrical components of the drive system are considered. The evaluation criteria are described and for the cost comparison the applicable method is demonstrated. The cost comparison is based on a medium and large sized mill system. Each drive package will display cost details with regard to capital cost, maintenance, power losses, overall efficiency, overhead and loss of production. As conclusion the benefits and disadvantages of the two drive/mill packages will be presented together with a payback diagram.

Hawaii is located approximately 2,500 miles from the mainland, but has basic needs for its thriving developing community. Cement is one of these needs Cement production in Hawaii is not without handicaps. The necessary raw materials are practically non-existent except for limestone. Even at that, the available limestone is marine in origin, coralline in nature and amorphous in characteristics - unlike calcite which is normally the calcium carbonate source for cement manufacture. There is no clay or shale for the argillaceous portion of cement raw mix. Hawaii being volcanic in origin is too young geologically for clays and shales to evolve and whatever there is, most likely is washed into the ocean.

The treatment of concentrates for the recovery of the precious metals imposes many processing and environmental challenges. Hydrometallurgical technology for recovery of values from refractory precious metal materials has been developed at Sunshine Mining and Refining Company. Historically, conventional pyrometallurgical methods have been used for to recover values from refractory precious metal materials. However, enhanced environmental awareness has worked to constrain typical refractory material processing methods. This hinders and limits the ability of established smelting or roasting technologies to fill the needs of new sources of refractory materials. An alternative is to treat refractory precious metal bearing materials by hydro metallurgical techniques. These methods are considered more environmentally appropriate since they do not produce gaseous pollutants like sulfur dioxide. Industrially, Sunshine Mining and Refining Company employs hydrometallurgical technology to process refractory precious metal materials. The Sunshine antimony leach uses a mixture of sulfur and caustic under ambient pressure and boiling conditions. The Sunshine oxidation leach uses a mixture of sulfuric acid and a minimal amount of sodium nitrite under relatively mild oxygen pressure and temperature conditions. These conditions result in a nitrogen species catalyzed sulfuric acid pressure leach. Since hydrometallurgical technologies provide industrially proven processing options for many types of refractory precious metal containing materials, their usage should be considered. Ample work has been conducted to prove the effectiveness of Sunshine refractory processing technologies on various materials. This has included platinum group metal materials, refractory gold concentrates, silver materials and indium materials. In some cases, complete process flowsheets have been designed to recover both base and precious metals from these materials and to treat the generated waste streams in environmentally sound manners.

The Regional Copper-Nickel Study examined the potential impacts of copper-nickel sulfide mining, concentrating and smelting operations in northeastern Minnesota and gathered extensive monitoring data on the ecological characteristics of the region's aquatic and terrestrial biota. Because of the many development options possible, the diversity of the region's ecology, and the uncertainty of future environmental regulatory requirements, the Study did not attempt to measure the magnitude of environmental impacts on specific biological communities from a specific development proposal. The Study provides a broad base of environmental resource and impact information that hopefully will assist mining developers and environmental regulators when assessing specific proposals in the future. The following discussion is not a description of what will happen if copper-nickel development occurs in northeastern Minnesota but an exploration of why certain potential aspects of such development should be carefully considered and adequately understood before unnecessary or irreversible decisions are made.

Substantial progress has been made over the last ten years in the development of uniform national and international standards covering the definition, estimation and public reporting of mineral resources and mineral reserves. Agreement between the major participating countries has been reached, which include the requirement that a Competent Person prepares and approves publication of mineral resources and reserves. Most national regulatory organizations have accepted the new standards and have included them in the rules that must be followed by mining companies operating under their jurisdiction. These developments are the result of a concerted effort on the part of professional societies, national regulatory agencies, international organizations, and many dedicated individuals. The historical development of these standards is summarized in this paper. Accepted definitions of mineral resources and mineral reserves are discussed, as well as the definition and role of the Competent Person. Additional effort is needed before the international standards are fully understood, accepted and followed by mining companies, regulatory agencies, the investment community and the general public. Steps being taken toward development of a Mineral Reserves International Reporting Code Template (International Template) that will be available for all countries to use in deriving their specific country reporting codes, are outlined

The method of powering mills such as AG, SAG and Ball has a long and technically interesting history. It can be said that almost every decade in the last half century had its own trend. The trends were dominated by the market demand, the advanced process development and requirement of the mechanical and the electrical technology but mostly by the price of the applied technology. The increasing size of the ring geared mills in the last years requires more awareness on the drive train solution. Special attention must be paid to the mechanics and the requirements of the power grid. Operational challenges such as soft starting and controlled operation as well as the protection of the equipment have gained importance. Frequency converter drive solutions dedicated to single or dual pinion ring-geared mills offer significant advantages over conventional drives due to their application specific features and controls. Solutions with low speed motors as well as high speed motors cover all possible configurations available for ring geared mills.

Consolidation Coal Company's Loveridge Mine operates the only coarse coal hoisting and overland slurry transport system in North America. The system has been in operation since April 1980 and according to current haulage levels will have handled over two million tons by this conference date. Original performance goals have been exceeded. The systems will be described and their application to rapid excavation and tunneling haulage needs will be discussed. Froth flotation is one of the most actively pursued research and development areas in the coal preparation industry today. Many new types of flotation machines and processes are being developed and compared in an effort to handle the increased quantity of coal fines produced by finer grinding for greater liberation of ash- forming and sulfur-bearing mineral matter. Of the many new machines and processes under development for deep cleaning ultrafine coals, it is quite likely that many will not reach industrial use in the near future; in fact, it is quite likely that some never will. Therefore, it is the objective of this paper to select and describe a few of the new flotation machines and processes that appear to have reached a level of development that would suggest their eventual use on an industrial scale. It is probable, and doubtless will be argued, that some of the selections given in this paper should not have been included, while others should have, but the reader must understand that the author is restricted by the information available. And because most of the information available comes from those who are developing the equipment and/ or processes, it is often confusing and conflicting. Thus with a somewhat moderated plan, the author proposes to point out some in- congruities in the literature in the hope that such information might promote more independent study and perhaps explain the abundant promise versus the scant use of the new equipment and processes described.

Pocahontas Land Corporation, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Norfolk and western Railway Company, owns a 100,000-acre block of coal lands in Martin, Johnson, Pike, Floyd and Lawrence Counties, Kentucky. These holdings were largely acquired in three major purchases between the years 1942 and 1959. The area is undeveloped and constitutes a part of the coal reserve for future mining. This block, which is principally in Martin County, lies in a triangle formed by the Levisa and Tug Forks of Big Sandy River on the sides with Dewey Dam at its base and the Town of Louisa at the apex. The topography'is typical of eastern Kentucky and consists of steep hills rising from 500 to 800 feet above creek level. There is little level ground in the area. As a matter of fact, some roads are on the creek bottoms with what little bottom land is available in the hollows being utilized for small-scale farming. The steep hills are marked by three separate massive sandstone formations which form cliffs ranging from 40 to 100 feet in height.

The uncertainty associated with a reserve estimate has generally been expressed as a subjective ranking rather than a quantitative expression of either reliability or uncertainty. These rankings of estimate reliability have taken a very nonquantitative bent as well. For example, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission definition of proven reserves is given as: Reserves for which (a) quantity is computed from dimensions revealed in outcrops, trenches, workings, or drill holes, grade and/or quality are computed from the results of detailed sampling and (b) the sites for inspection, sampling and measurement are spaced so closely and the geologic character is so well-defined that size, shape, depth and mineral content of reserves are well-established. Chelatang agents, because of their metal specificity, can function as effective mineral processing reagents. A brief review of the work carried out in this area is presented. Some of the salient features of mineral flotation and flocculation with chehting-type reagents, such as bulk us. surface chelation, the role of pH, mineral solubility, solution chemistry of reagents, and temperature, are illustrated with appropriate examples. The problems associated with the commercialization of chelating reagents for ore beneficiation and the research efforts required in this area are also discussed.

A statistical model for assessing the risk of ground subsidence in abandoned mine areas is presented. The model is based on the relationship that exists between .the frequency and the location-of subsidence events in a given area and the physical conditions of the ground. These conditions can be described by a series of geological, mining, and physical variables. The model suggests the existence of regions in the multidimensional space of variables which are associated .with increases or decreases in the frequency of subsidence events. Regions associated with an increase in the frequency of subsidence events correspond to regions of higher risks, and vice versa. Risk assessment is based on the ability to express the limits of these high and low risk regions in the, space of variables, and on the ability to express the degree of membership of blocks of land within any of these regions. The theoretical framework for the model is extracted, from discriminant analysis. Risk is quantified by the probabilities of membership of blocks of land into any of these regions. Risk maps are produced by displaying membership probabilities in. appropriate contouring levels. The model has been applied in two urban areas where subsidence of the ground has been active in the past. The two areas are Penn Hills, near Pittsburgh, and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in northeastern Pennsylvania. In this paper, only the results for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area are presented. Those for the Penn Hills area have been presented elsewhere (Cervantes, et al, 1990). In the- Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area, geostatistical estimates of variables likely to affect the stability of the ground were made using samples from 53 drillholes. The estimates were made for 2000x2000 ft squared blocks of land covering the study area. Discriminant functions were computed from the estimated variables and used to establish regions for classifying blocks of land into one of these two populations: 1) blocks not likely to have a subsidence event, and ii) blocks likely to have one or more subsidence events. The same, discriminant functions were used to compute membership probabilities for blocks of land to tall within any of these two populations. These probabilities were contoured to produce a risk map. The risk map produced compares well with the location of the subsidence events which have occurred to date in the area.

The use of polysilicates for treating heavy metals in soils and mining sludges is discussed. Results of the treatment are given for soil contaminated in a metal scrap yard operation and for copper mining processing sludges. The types of metals of concern are arsenic, lead, copper, nickel, cadmium, and zinc. The application of the treatment is predicated on the mixture and relative concentrations of the metals as well as the material matrix. Reductions in soluble concentrations (STLC or TCLP) of one to two orders of magnitude can be achieved with relatively small additions of silicates and cementitious materials.

When we were asked to prepare a paper on gold to be part of the Economics of Precious Metals session, our immediate thought was that we should address the question of supply. Are the existing mines of the world capable of filling the demand for gold? We recognized that gold does not conform to the normal pressures of supply and demand. Major new sources of production and increased sales might have a very short term effect and depress the price but this does not last very long. Those forces that affect gold prices are very different from the ones economists normally deal with. Factors such as mass psychology, political tensions and fear are certainly more important to the gold price than supply and demand in today's world.

This paper is primarily concerned with the exploration for massive sulphide orebodies. In a discussion of this type, it seems appropriate to establish a few definitions so that all parties may consider the same beast and its habitat. First, the term "massive sulphides", as used here, not only denotes a body of mineralized rock containing in excess of 50% sulphides by volume, but a mass of sulphides that respond as a conductor to the electromagnetic (EM) systems currently in use in exploration. "Disseminated sulphides" refer to all of those sulphide occurrences that respond to the Induced Polarization (IP) geophysical methods most commonly in use in porphyry copper exploration. This latter definition may also include the disseminated sulphide halos so frequently found associated with massive mineralization as well as banded and stringer sulphide mineralization. It is plain to see that these two end members of our definitions can easily blend into each other. The term "volcanogenic" refers here to any and all geologic processes that have their origin in volcanic activity. Thus we are concerned here with the exploration for massive sulphide ore deposits derived from and affected by contemporaneous and post mineral volcanic activity. Furthermore, most massive sulphide deposits are apparently formed in a submarine environment, deposited with extrusive rocks and sediments and/or chemical hot spring accumulations, then enclosed and protected by the addition of more volcanic and sedimentary material then, probably folded and deformed into one of their myriad of shapes.

This paper discusses factors affecting the productivity of continuous coal mining operations. It analyzes design and operational relationships in continuous mining systems, and investigates how their productivity can be improved by selecting the number of headings, the dimensions of pillars, and the depth of cuts as well as the miner loading rate and tramming speed, the shuttle car payload and hauling speed, and the roof bolting cycle time. A computer simulator has been found very efficient in analyzing effects of section layouts and equipment operating characteristics on the productivity of continuous coal mining systems.
