This paper summarizes the results of an investigation into possibly the largest coal pillar failure in the USA. The newly opened drift mine is located in Southeastern Kentucky and worked an 11 feet thick coal seam, all other mines in the District worked seams 4-5 feet thick. The initial mine development consisted of 14 main entries (Fig. 1) which were driven in two sets of 7, under increasing depth of overburden. As the left seven entries came under deeper overburden the pillar ribs began sloughing which caused many of the concrete-block ventilation stoppings to crack. The mine management stopped the advance in the left seven and continued with the right seven entries. During the spring of the following year development resumed in the left seven, rib sloughage occurred again and this time severely cracked many stoppings and many were totally disintegrated from the excessive deformation. Within few weeks the sloughage was so heavy that many of these entries behind the active face were filled with piles of sloughed coal slabs. When the face reached a depth approximately 1150 feet, the sloughage became a slow, massive squeeze. The entry convergence (closure) reduced their height from 11 to 7-8 feet and the squeeze spread back to shallower depth covering an area roughly 300 pillars.

Presentation of the project Underground civil works to be performed They include two single track running tunnels and a service tunnel of a length of fifty kilometers . Many cross adits (180 adits) : to link the tunnels (53 cross passages), to relieve air super pressure from one tunnel to the other (87 piston ducts), to install technical adits (40 electrical rooms). Two cross-overs located at one third of the whole length, allow trains to shunt from one tunnel to the other so as to ensure one way traffic in case of emergency. Pumping stations allow water to be collected at the lowest point and pumped out. 1 Main features of the tunnels 1.1 The service tunnel This 4.8 m inner diameter gallery allows During civil works - front probing operations of the geological layers encountered (front and vertical probes). - lateral soil grouting that may be necessary to facilitate the boring of the two running tunnels . The service tunnel has been bored with a 5.72 meter external diameter Robbins TBM for the undersea section, and a MITSUBISHI TBM for the land section.

The Marysvale volcanic field of west-central Utah contains large areas of argillically altered rocks (fig. 1) that, in turn, enclose smaller areas of fine-grained, medium-grade, replacement alunite deposits and coarsely crystalline, high-grade vein-type alunite deposits. The largest replacement alunite deposits are [ ] located peripheral to a 23-m.y.-old monzonite stock called the Central Intrusive (fig. 1). The deposits formed in near-surface, highly oxidizing environments at the tops of hydrothermal plumes that were spaced irregularly around the stock. The deposits are horizontally zoned from alunitic cores through kaolinitic to propylitic envelopes. Vertically, characteristic alteration minerals progress from a pyrite-propylitic alteration assemblage at the base, upward through alunitic, jarositic, and hematitic assemblages to a flooded silica cap as shown on figure 2. The silica caps are cut by hydrothermal explosion breccias. d34Sso4 values of + 11.5 to + 15.4 permil indicate that sulfur in the hydrothermal plume was derived from underlying Mesozoic evaporites. The sharp upward transition from pyrite- propylite to alunite probably marks the paleowater table, and the top of the flooded silica cap represents the paleoground surface. Basin-Range extensional tectonism began shortly after alteration, and buried the replacement alunite deposits in basins beneath sediments eroded from uplands. The deposits were only recently exhumed.

The Tacubaya subway tunnels form a link in the Sistema de Transporte Colectivo (Mass Transit System) of the Federal District of Mexico. One tunnel 327 m long lies to the north of Tacubaya Station, the other 811 m long, to the south. The tunnels are designed to accommodate two subway trains, one inbound and one outbound, within the inside diameter of 8.5 m. The designers of the tunnel lining and tunnel driving equipment were faced with the problem of driving two subway tunnels 9.0 m outside diameter through water-bearing soil, directly beneath a high speed limited access highway, a main drainage sewer, structures including residences and office buildings, on an alignment curved for 67 per cent of tunnel length, and on grades as high as 7 per cent, within a limited budget, with minimum damage to property and disruption to the community. Planning The following decisions affecting tunnel design and construction were made at an early stage of planning: Shield. To enhance safety, a tunnel shield would be used for tunnel driving. Dewatering. The water-bearing soil could be effectively dewatered; consequently, tunnel driving could be performed in free air. Hand Mining. To minimize investment in equipment, hand mining would be used to excavate and support the face.

Water quality impacts of shallow water submersion of partially weathered and oxidized waste rock containing reactive sulphide minerals were investigated in laboratory column lysimeter studies. The waste rock investigated was highly reactive, contained oxidation reaction products from previous exposure and weathering, and had a low sulphur content of approximately 2 % S, mostly as pyrite. The submerged waste rock, though previously weathered, had high oxygen consumption, resulting in rapid depletion of dissolved oxygen in its pore water, within a shallow depth of ~2?5 cm from the surface. The surface and pore water qualities of the submerged waste rock were significantly impacted by the dissolution and release of previous-oxidation-reaction products, which contributed to their rapid acidification and having increased concentrations of dissolved SO4, Fe total and other metals: Al, Mn, Ca, Cu, Ni, Zn and Pb. Despite the high porosity and permeability of the waste rock, the diffusion controlled mass transfer from the submerged waste rock to the overlying water cover was relatively low for most ionic species. Additional surface oxidation of the sub-merged, partially weathered waste rock was on-going, but its impact on the overall surface water quality was low and masked by the dissolution and release of previous oxidation reaction products to both surface and pore water regimes.

Silver Bell is located about 56 km (35 miles) northwest of Tucson, AZ. It is a classic porphyry copper deposit containing enriched disseminated chalcocite ore in altered porphyritic rocks with chalcopyrite in adjacent skarn zones. The discovery of Silver Bell was an evolutionary process that occurred over a 75-year period. Recorded mining activity began about 1865 on Boot Hill east of El Tiro pit (see Fig. 1) where outcrops of altered limestones were found to contain 425 to 482 g (15 to 17 oz) Ag mixed with copper oxides. By 1874, the Young America Copper Co. was mining shallow occurrences of 30% Cu along the north side of the present Oxide pit. The ore was shipped by wagon to Yuma, AZ, and then by boat to San Francisco for smelting. By 1881, the district supported several mining companies, two small smelters, and was being favorably compared to Bisbee in local newspapers. Most of the ore mined in the period 1865-1903 came from pods of massive sulfide or their oxidized products which were distributed in an unpredictable fashion through a large skarn zone in Paleozoic limestone east of El Tiro pit. Ore grades varied from 5 to 10% Cu.

Principles of Operation and Mechanical Features General Mechanical Description Sieve-bend screens are high-capacity screening devices which utilize stationary, concave, wedge-bar screening surfaces. A complete sieve bend is comprised of a feed distribution chamber, a structure for holding the screen surface, and collection chambers or chutes for oversize and undersize materials. In devices used for metallurgical practice, provision is usually made for reversal of the direction of flow over the surface, either by rotating the surface or by changing the feed nozzle position. The size of the unit varies in height from 5 to 8 ft, and in width from 2 to 8 ft. The orientation of the wedge-bar surface is such that the slots between the wedge bars are perpendicular to the flow of feed material over the surface. The feed distribution means is arranged such that the flow of liquid suspension is distributed evenly and tangentially over the width of the screen surface. A variety of means are used including simple gravity weir feeds, long slotted nozzles, and a multiplicity of round nozzles. A typical gravity-fed weir type nozzle is shown in Fig. 18. In the spring of 1988, Freeport-McMoRan Resource Partners Ltd. Partnership, IMC Fertilizer Inc. and Homestake Mining Co., as joint venturers, were awarded the sulphur lease for Main Pass Block 299, lease number OCS-G 91372. This was one of 11 leases awarded to the joint venturers. Following the initial discovery wells in December 1988, delineation drilling confirmed proven sulphur reserves of 68 Mt (67 million long tons). Proven, recoverable oil and gas reserves are 6.2 Mm3 (39.4 million bbl) and 1114 Mm3 (7.2 billion cu ft), respectively. Development of the sulphur mine was given approval as a fast-track project in 1989. The oil and gas reserves were acquired from the original hydrocarbon lessee in 1990 and were also given fast-track status. Fast-track for these projects meant design and engineering would not be complete before construction began. Joint venture The Main Pass Joint Venture is one of 13 joint ventures formed between Freeport and three other companies - IMC Fertilizer, Inc., Felmont Oil Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Homestake Mining Co., and Texasgulf Minerals and Metals Co. Felmont has since changed its name to Homestake Sulphur Co. Texasgulf assigned its interests to its parent company. Texasgulf did not participate in the Main Pass 299 joint venture. Joint venture negotiations, anticipating a lease sale in mid-1988, began in December of 1987. This joint venture, the first of its kind, was created to acquire offshore leases, explore, develop and mine sulphur. The Interior Department's Minerals Management Service (MMS) announced a lease sale date of Feb. 24, 1988 on the first business day of 1988. This greatly accelerated the joint venture negotiations. Of the 13 leases the joint ventures bid on, 11 were awarded. Freeport holds its interest in all the leases through its ownership interest in Freeport-McMoRan Resource Partners, Ltd. Partnership. Resource Partners is the operator on all of the leases.

INTRODUCTION Underground mines in many parts of the world have elevated levels of short-lived 222Rn daughters. Lung cancer implicating exposure to short-lived daughters is documented in the U.S., Czechoslovakia, Canada, Sweden, the U.K., France and Newfoundland. An elevated lung cancer mortality (in excess of that expected) has been observed when cumulative exposure to alpha emitting short-lived 222Rn daughters (218Po, 214pb 214Bi 214Po) is greater than about 60 working level months (WLM) [1]/ (Hewett, D. 1979). This is equal to an absorbed alpha dose of about 30 rads to shallow basal cells in bronchial epithelium. Long-lived alpha emitters are also present in underground mines, and especially uranium mines because of airborne particulates containing uranium. The 238U parent of this primordial series supports other long-lived emitters 234U 230Th, 226Ra, Pb(210Po) which are in some degree of radioactive equilibrium with the parent 238U. Airborne particulates can be present due to drilling on the face of the ore body as well as in all parts of the mine through resuspension from the mine floor. Particles from 1 µm to about 5 µm penetrate the nose with reasonable efficiency and deposit primarily in the tracheobronchial tree. They are removed by ciliary motion (the bronchial escalator) but deliver an alpha dose to basal cells in bronchial epithelium during clearance in the same manner as short-lived 222Rn daughters. It is the purpose of this work to indicate the alpha dose to basal cells in bronchial epithelium delivered by the long-lived emitters 234, 238U. The dose calculations reported here based upon a few measured values of these isotopes in air in uranium mines in New Mexico and Colorado. MEASURED 234, 238U IN URANIUM MINE ATMOSPHERES In 1979, the U.S. Bureau of Mines undertook a study to evaluate personal monitors to be worn by miners to measure short-lived 222Rn daughters. One of these devices sampled air at 100 cm3/min through a 13 mm glass fiber filter, with a small pump worn on the belt. Alpha particles emitted by 222Rn daughters on the filter were measured continuously by a thermoluminescent dosimeter (TLD) chip. Each monitor was worn by a miner for a 170 hour working month and approximately one cubic meter of air was sampled during this period. Six different mines were selected for the test in New Mexico and Colorado. The mines used either wet or dry drilling methods. Miners in each location were equipped with the personal monitors. Subsequent to their use in evaluating the shortlived daughters, Dr. Robert Droullard of the Bureau generously gave us these filter samples along with a few blank glass fiber filters from the same box of filters used in the study so that long-lived emitters present in these mine atmospheres could be determined radiochemically. Four of the samples have been run for 234, 238U. The radiochemical procedure for uranium is adapted from USDOE, Environmental Measurements Laboratory Manual (Harley, J.H., 1976). Briefly, the samples were placed in platinum crucibles, spiked with 232U tracer and pretreated with nitric and hydrofluoric acid. The residue was fused with potassium fluoride to transpose to pyrosulfate. The fused cake was dissolved in 7 [N] hydrochloric acid and the solution passed through an anion exchange column to isolate uranium. Iron was removed using mercury cathode electrolysis. Uranium was electrodeposited onto platinum dies and counted using solid-state alpha spectrometry. The samples from each type of mine (wet and dry) were analyzed. The samples in the "wet" mine in New Mexico were selected on the basis of the original TLD measurement because they were near the maximum occupational standard for radon daughters. These samples should also represent upper limits to longlived activity encountered, since they were obtained at drilling operations on the face of the ore body. Samples collected in the "dry" mine in Colorado were pot associated with a particular location in the mine and should be representative of a month long overall exposure in many locations and operations. In recent years, much work has been done to explain the nature of the gold-carbon adsorption mechanism. The benefits of a sound theoretical basis has the obvious application to gold adsorption and elution industrial processes. Unfortunately, the lack of a clear agreement on the mechanism has provided no clear direction towards process innovation and optimization. Jones' (1989) work has gone a long way towards clarifying the specie of gold adsorbed (and thus the chemistry required to remove it). Since the development of hot caustic and cyanide elution, the kinetics have been accelerated by the application of pressure to increase elution temperatures beyond the boiling point at atmospheric pressure. However, the traditional reagent content of 15 g/L NaOH and 5-10g/L NaCN has remained largely unchanged. This is in spite of work that has shown that the presence of cyanide is not required for the elution process to take place (Adams, 1986; Adams; 1989; Jones, 1989). Adams (1989) has also compared NaOH elution rates with and without cyanide. He found improvement with the use of cyanide and a synergistic effect with the use of both. Others have found no difference in overall extraction (Jones, 1989

The oil and gas drilling industry is the largest user of "functional" industrial minerals for well drilling and completion. (Functional industrial minerals can be defined as those used for performance characteristics rather than composition.) This industry's use of industrial minerals involves complex mining, processing, and distribution of products. The cost of these products at the well site reflects the complexity of distribution to typically remote locations and the cost of service. Table 1 illustrates the use of functional industrial minerals by the drilling industry. The total tonnage shown is almost 2 1/2 times larger than the 3.3 Mt (3.6 million st) of kaolin used by the paper industry for filling and coating, another major use for functional industrial minerals. Drilling fluids are an indispensible part of a drilling operation. These fluids perform several functions simultaneously. They cool and lubricate the drill bit, remove formation cuttings, increase the specific gravity of the fluid to counteract formation fluid pressures, provide a filter cake on the wall of the drill hole to prevent drilling fluid loss to the formation, protect the porosity of producing zones, and prevent reaction of the formation or formation fluids with the drilling mud. When porosity of a formation exceeds the ability of the drilling fluid to form a wall cake, it is referred to as lost circulation. Because these fluids are being constantly formulated for changing formation conditions, they require a skilled technician or drilling mud engineer on the site at all times. Drilling fluids are composed of oil or water as the liquid phase, and industrial mineral products and chemicals to control chemical and physical properties. The basic function of viscosity and suspension result from the use of gelling clays and chemical and mineral dispersants; specific gravity of the mud is adjusted with mineral weighting agents; filtration control is maintained by clays and various natural and synthetic polymers; platey minerals and scrap products are used for controlling lost circulation in porous or fractured zones; salts are added to the mud to inhibit shale and clay swelling; chemicals are added for pH adjustment, prevention of corrosion, and as scavengers for formation fluid components. Because of the clay component, drilling muds have rheological properties different from conventional fluids, behaving as Bingham plastic fluids as opposed to the Newtonian behavior of water and oil. Newtonian fluids will begin to flow with the application of any force, however small. Bingham plastic fluids require a finite force or shear stress (yield value) before flow begins. Thixotropy is another property of clay-based drilling fluids. At rest they form a gel structure that suspends the weighting agents and rock cuttings. These gels break down when a finite force is applied and circulation is restored. At the bit where shear rates are the greatest, the viscosity or resistance to flow decreases, so hydraulic pressures and pumping costs are minimized. A drilling rig provides a means of rotating a hollow pipe attached to a cutting bit. A mud pit or tank is used for mixing the drilling mud and its components. INTRODUCTION The Chimney Creek Gold Mine (Gold Fields Operating Co. - Chimney Creek) is located 47 miles northeast of Winnemucca, Nevada, at the northern end of the Osgood Mountains. The operation is a wholly owned subsidiary of Gold Fields Mining Corporation, the North American branch of Consolidated Gold Fields PLC, London, England. The plant started up in November, 1987, less than three years after discovery of the orebody and three months ahead of schedule. Ore is mined in an open pit and is processed by combined dump leaching and milling techniques for gold and silver recovery. The mine is set to produce approximately 150.000 ounces of gold and 50,000 ounces of silver per year over a 12 year life at current reserve estimations. The mine was designed and constructed at a cost of $79.3 million with engineering and construction services provided by Davy McKee Corporation, San Ramon, California. Key Gold Fields operating staff were involved in the design of the facility from the start of the project: The Mine Manager, Plant Superintendent, Plant General Foreman, Maintenance General Foreman and Chief Metallurgist were all involved full time on the project within 5 months of the first ore discovery. Emphasis was directed at optimizing operating efficiency and in particular minimizing labor costs in the plant. It was recognized that a high level of instrumentation and control would be required to achieve this. The risk associated with the instrumentation and control systems implemented was to be minimized by using equipment and systems that had been proven in industry while utilizing the most cost effective, state-of-the-art technology available. The reliability of the overall control system was considered to be critical in view of the cost of downtime associated with the gold extraction plant. BRIEF PROCESS DESCRIPTION The dump leaching process treats approximately 1.2 million tons per year of low grade ore at an average grade of 0.035 oz/ton. Run of mine material is dumped on a lined leach pad and weak cyanide solution is applied by drip irrigation. Pregnant solution run off is pumped to carbon columns in the milling plant for gold recovery and the barren solution returned to the dump leach circuit. Average gold recovery is 60%. This process has little instrumentation and control associated with it. The milling operation treats 700,000 tons annually of higher grade ore (0.200 oz/ton initially, dropping to an average of 0.135 oz/ton after first two years). Recovery is directly related to head grade (fixed tail assay effect) and currently averages 96%. A single pass through a jaw crusher reduces run of mine ore to minus 12 inches. The ore is stockpiled and reclaimed by loader for grinding in a two-stage milling circuit consisting of a SAG mill and ball mill, the latter in closed circuit with hydrocyclones. Cyanide and lime are added into the SAG mill to start dissolution of gold as early as possible in the circuit. The ground product leaves the milling circuit at approximately 78% minus 200 mesh and is fed to an unique "double thickener" leaching-recovery circuit. This circuit has been discussed in detail in a paper by J. G. Mansanti et a1 (1). Two thickeners are arranged in counter- current configuration with three leach tanks. Overflow solution from the first thickener is treated by carbon-in-columns (CIC) for gold recovery with 85% of the soluble gold recovered onto this carbon. Underflow slurry from this thickener is pumped to the leach tanks, with a total retention time of 12 hours, and then gravitates to the No. 2 thickener. Overflow solution from the second thickener is used as a wash in the first thickener. Underflow slurry from the second thickener is treated in a carbon-in- pulp (CIP) scavenging circuit to recover the remaining 15% dissolved gold. Gold-loaded carbon from both the dump leach and milling circuits is stripped in batches using the Zadra hot caustic- cyanide elution process. Gold (and silver) is recovered from the hot strip solution by precipitation with zinc dust and the product recovered on Funda pressure filters. The precipitate is retorted to remove any mercury and then smelted into buttons. The buttons (approximately 80% gold, 15% silver) are shipped to an independent refiner in Salt Lake City, Utah, for further treatment.

The Spa1lation Process Because of the low thermal conductivity of many hard rocks, rapid heating of these rocks produces a thin surface layer in which the temperatures attain high values. Thermal expansion of this surface layer is constrained by the reminder of the still cool rock, and when stresses within the surface rock become high enough, the surface rock breaks away from the cooler rock behind it and flies or falls off as a thin flake called a spall. Then the next, newly exposed surface is heated, and the process continues. This process is the basis of spallation drilling. The hot gases from a jet burner provide the heat for spallation to occur, and their high velocity provides a scouring action that transfers heat to the rock and removes the spalls as rapidly as they form. Spallation is a process which works in very hard rock. It is dependent upon the thermal expansion coefficient and the thermal diffusivity of the rock but is also affected by any discontinuities in the rock. To date the efforts which have been made to evaluate the various rock according to their spallability has been minimal. As the success of this process is dependent upon the characteristics of rock it is expected that the study of rock mechanics will prove to be of greater value to this program than to the other mechanism for drilling and excavating rock. Commercial Uses of SPALLATION In the 19408s, the Linde Air Products Division of Union Carbide (UC 1 began developing spallation for use in mining taconite ore, which is presently the chief source of iron in the United States. In this work UC developed a jet-piercing tool that burned fuel oil with oxygen to produce spallation and contained mechanical cutters to remove rock that was not amenable to spallation. The UC jet-piercing machines have since produced about 40 million feet of shallow blast holes used for emplacing explosives in the taconite mines. During this work it was found that hole diameters could be increased by merely reducing the advance rate of the burners and that existing holes could be enlarged by making another pass through the hole with the same burner. The Browning Engineering Go. of Hanover, N.H., has developed a hand-held spallation burner to cut slots in granite. It has been used for a quarter of a century and is now standard equipment for quarrying granite throughout the world. This burner, which resembles a small jet engine oriented with its exhaust pointed downward, is the forerunner of a flame jet burner used to spall experimental holes in granite at maximum rates in excess of 100 ft/hr when operating in hard, competent granite. It uses No. 2 fuel oil, which is burned with compressed air. The system uses water to cool the burner and the exhaust gases. These gases, along with the steam produced from the cooling water, blow the spalls from the hole. Experimental Work Theoretical and experimental work has been accomplished by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Los Alamos National Laboratory. This work is reported in Refs. (3) and (4). To verify the experimental results of this work laboratory scaled down field tests were conducted using two we1 1 characterized granites from quarries in Barre, VT and Westerby, RI, under defined heating conditions. In the laboratory tests a propane - oxygen heating torch was used to direct a flame at the granite surface and the spal 1 ing process was examined at various heating rates with a high-speed video taping system operated at 200 frame per second. This produced a time-lapse sequence where the onset of the spallation process was easily distinguished. Also the heat flux from the torch to a flat surface at various stand off distances and flows was measured. A similar set of tests was conducted using the more easily quantified and uniform heat source of a 1.5 kw GO2 laser. This allowed accurate

INTRODUCTION The Metro Rail Project is approximately a 20-mile initial portion of Southern California's planned 150-mile transit network and will provide transit service to the dense population and employment centers within the Los Angeles regional core. The Southern California Rapid Transit District (SCRTD) has defined, as the first segment, a 4.4-mile five station rail line, which extends from the yard and shop area near Union Station to the Wilshire/Alvarado Station. Design packages are completed; utilities are currently being relocated; demolition is underway; early construction contracts have been awarded; and construction has started. This paper will describe the current status of the Metro Rail design and construction, after first briefly reviewing its history, objectives, and main components. PROJECT HISTORY The California State Legislature created the SCRTD in 1964 with a legislative mandate to design, construct, and operate a rapid transit system within the Los Angeles County area. To obtain the monies required to support this program, in June, 1974, Proposition 5 was passed by a solid majority, allowing a portion of state gasoline taxes to be used for rapid transit development. This measure provided a local source of funds for SCRTD to begin its rail rapid transit development program in Los Angeles.

INTRODUCTION Disposal of coal refuse is a costly and challenging problem facing the coal industry today. After the Martin County Coal Company slurry spill and the subsequent regulatory changes state and federal agencies are now beginning to require companies to justify new slurry impoundments. The authors have performed an analysis of different means of disposing of coal refuse for a major coal producing company located in the eastern Kentucky coalfields (the name of which will be withheld for the purpose of this paper). The company’s existing slurry impoundment is nearing its maximum permitted elevation and also an elevation where it may come in contact with abandoned underground workings. Due to the increased concern with underground mine works near slurry impoundments, additional consideration was given to raising the existing impoundment. Several other alternatives were evaluated, including but not limited to raising the existing impoundment, constructing a new slurry impoundment, constructing slurry cells, belt presses and others. This alternatives analysis was performed as part of a Section 404 permit for a valley fill and is currently being reviewed by the U. S. Army Corp of Engineers. All of the known possible alternatives were discussed in detail in the analysis. Due to the findings of the alternatives analysis, the company considers the engineered construction of the proposed impoundment to be the most favorable option of all the other alternatives evaluated, from both an economic and environmental standpoint. ALTERNATIVES EVALUATION FOR COALREFUSE/SLURRY DISPOSAL Background The company currently operates several deep mines and employ over 300 people and produces over 3.9 clean Mt/a (4 million stpy) of high quality, low sulfur coal. Currently, coarse refuse is belted to a valley fill, while, fine refuse is pumped to the existing impoundment. Coarse refuse is trucked to the existing impoundment as needed for construction purposes. The average recovery is approximately 50%; therefore, over 3.9 Mt/a (4 million stpy) of coal refuse must also be separated and placed.

INTRODUCTION In February 1981, the Canadian Institute for Radiation Safety (CAIRS) initiated a routine Personal Alpha Dosimetry service for personnel of the Canadian uranium mining industry. This service is based on the use of the [Personal Alpha Dosimeter] developed by the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA). The origins of personal alpha dosimetry and its rational are briefly described. Technical and organizational aspects of a routine personal alpha dosimetry service are outlined in this paper. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND International recommendations (1) and Canadian regulations have established Maximum Permissible Exposures (MPE) for each source of radiation exposure. Uranium workers in mines and mills are exposed to external radiation ( [y] rays) and to internal radiations ( [B] and [a] particles) which are delivered to the respiratory track by airborne alpha emitters (Rn and Th daughters and Long Lived Dust). To date, dosimetry for uranium workers has been performed by area monitoring/collective dosimetry. In North America the concentration of radon daughters is routinely measured by grab samples taken at the work place and by on-site gross alpha counting. The concentration of potential alpha energy is then calculated (usually by Kusnetz method) and expressed in Working Levels (WL). The time spent by each worker at a given work place is determined from his time sheets and used to calculate the individual monthly exposures to airborne alpha emitters, which is then expressed in Working Level Months (WLM). The uncertainties attached to such a procedure are obvious even in the case of frequent grab samplings and can be expected to lead to an underestimation of individual doses. Among fifteen possible sources identified in a mine situation, (2) four may stretch the standard deviation of the measurements' distribution, nine may lead to an underestimation and two may lead to either an underestimation or to an overestimation. To improve this situation, in 1971 the Atomic Energy Commission began studying the use of personal alpha dosimeters to determine individual exposures from the airborne alpha emitters encountered in the uranium industry environments. Criteria for a Personal Alpha Dosimeter In order to minimize the difficulties encountered in determining exposures received by uranium workers, the CEA in co-operation with the Atomic Energy Control Board of Canada (AECB), has developed a set of criteria for personal alpha dosimeters. Exposures may be determined easily and accurately using this criteria. Autonomy The dosimeter must operate for at least 10 to 12 hours. Excess time spent in the mine or in the facility may possibly be related to an accidental situation causing unusual levels of radioactivity. Since the dosimeter may be needed in non-underground settings where a cap lamp is not used, full autonomy is desirable. Maintenance, Periodicity of Reading In order to complement other dosimetry systems, the personal alpha dosimeter should be read monthly when the filter should also be changed. Routine air flow checks can be made according to local conditions (e.g. diesel loading). Radioisotopes Identification Since the exposure unit (WLM) is based on the concentration of potential alpha energy in the air, the personal alpha dosimeter should be capable of identifying each short lived alpha emitter included in the calculation of the WI, and WLM. Permanent Exposure Record Three points may be considered here: 1. In many countries, lung cancer in uranium workers is a compensable occupational disease. In some instances, compensation is awarded when it can be proven that the worker has received an exposure above a certain limit. The present uncertainty of the individual exposure makes the compensation procedure difficult. 2. By design, a personal alpha dosimeter must representatively sample all airborne particles, ranging in size from the unattached fraction to the upper limit of respirable aerosols (0.001 to 5 µm). The dosimeter must offer minimal resistance to the penetration of these aerosols. While the mining/ milling environment presents harsh conditions which may accidentally contaminate the dosimeter, it is important to be able to distinguish these cases of contamination and still obtain accurate readings. 3. A dependable dose register is most valuable for further epidimiological studies. The dependability of such a data base increases with the possibility of a second assessment of the dosimeters' reading (filter, film).

The Crestmore Limestone Mine of Riverside Cement Company in Riverside, California is situated within 1.6 km of the Santa Ana River. It is an alluvium covered deposit with a massive quartz manzonite intrustion separating the upper and lower limestone beds which dip from 30° to 50°. The highly fractured upper bed contacting the Santa Ana alluvium contains many unique water inflow problems which vary, from multiple high pressure 19 liters per minute inflows up to 3,000 liters per minute to 11,000 liters per minute inflows-contacted by development mining in April 1983. A case history of the successful grouting of these inflows and the continual grouting procedures in advance of present mining with empirical' results are discussed.

What is prime farmland? Can such land, once it has been strip-mined for coal, be restored so that it will produce corn, soybeans, wheat, and alfalfa? What methods or practices are necessary to bring about restoration within a reasonable time so that crop yields will be equivalent to or higher than those of unmined prime farmland under high levels of management? These questions concerned land use researchers in Illinois as early as 1948 when the Illinois Agricultural Experiment Station experimented with growing cultivated crops on strip-mined land in St. Clair County (1). This research was done almost 30 years before requirements of Public Law 95-87 were passed by the United States Congress and signed August 3, 1977.

Hydraulic powered supports have been employed in the U. S. longwall mining for the last two' decades. Yet the sciences of roof control at the powered supported faces remain largely unknown. Many questions remain unanswered. To address the problems, field investigations were conducted from 1980 to 1984 in seven longwall faces (1-10)(Table 1). Some of the findings have been reported by Peng and Chiang (11). The basic geological conditions of these panels are listed in Table 2. The mining equipment used in these longwall panels are listed in Table 3. Instrumentation and Observation Programs Two events were generally instrumented: one was the hydraulic leg pressures of the powered supports, and the other was the canopy and base plate load distributions.

Geology is frequently complicated, hence only more regular deposits are mined. Coal is generally thick, often steeply pitching and usually soft or well-cleated. Due to competition from open-pit mines, only two underground mines are operating, McIntyre and B.C. Coal. Several other mines are being planned, the method being evenly divided between hydraulic, longwall, and room and pillar. McIntyre mines in the flat part of their formation (up to 20 degrees) uses continuous miners and shuttle cars in the 3m and 6m seams. This company is considering a retreating longwall face. B.C. Coal operates a hydraulic mine in a 16m thick seam dipping at 10 to 55 degrees with a productivity of about 20 tonnes per manshift.
