Maintenance costs in the mining industry often account for as much as 18-20% of total operating costs and with the cost of labor and materials rising, they threaten to become an even larger percentage of the total. Yet, without an effective maintenance program costs can soar beyond what they would be without a program. In other words, when production equipment is down, there is no production and no product to sell in the marketplace. This cost of downtime in lost product far exceeds the actual cost of maintenance, which is defined here as labor and materials. Thus, mine management must have an effective maintenance program to avoid downtime and meet production targets. Attaining an Effective Maintenance Program Many mine management and operations supervisors believe that an effective program is a function of how hard they push maintenance. Yet, when vital production equipment is inoperable and production is lagging, no amount of pushing helps. In actuality, maintenance has little control over its own destiny and needs support from other departments to deliver good service. Success of the maintenance program depends on gaining control of those factors that directly influence maintenance. Consider the following. Organization-The maintenance organization must be structured for maximum responsiveness to production needs. Unfortunately, some needs are immediate and many are unknown in advance. The maintenance department has little control over them. These outside influences limit the department manager's ability to control his own organizational structure. Preventive maintenance procedures-Routine lubrication, equipment inspection, minor adjustments and the like are controlled mostly by maintenance. Yet, scheduling preventive maintenance depends also on the availability of equipment controlled by other departments. Planning-The purpose of planning maintenance jobs is to ensure that the best use is made of maintenance resources. If the production department creates an environment of running repairs and emergencies, there can be little planning. Even well-planned jobs will suffer if there is less than full cooperation in carrying them out. As a consequence, the maintenance department is not blocked from planning, but the value of its planning is reduced. Scheduling-Maintenance scheduling should be a joint effort. Although maintenance does the planning, production must agree to the scheduled maintenance of its equipment. Workload-As a service organization, the maintenance department has limited control over its workload because it must consistently respond to other department's demands. At best, maintenance controls only the fixed portion of its workload-utility work, janitorial service, maintenance shop work, and assigned repetitive and preventive maintenance duties. Unscheduled and emergency work are initiated by operations. Major maintenance actions require full cooperation. Labor productivity-The effective use of labor is tied to other key functions of maintenance. These include organization, preventive maintenance, planning, scheduling, and emergency work. An area type organization, for example, can often respond more quickly to immediate needs than a centrally controlled maintenance group. Yet, area maintenance can result in lower labor productivity unless tight control is exercised. One of the advantages of a good "detection-oriented" preventive maintenance program is early discovery of problems and better opportunity to schedule corrective work in advance. Under planned work conditions, use of labor can be more productive. Complete planning and scheduling can minimize time spent on each job, increase effectiveness of supervision, and improve labor productivity. Finally, if emergency work is minimized, there are fewer delays, less lost time, better coordination, and more productive use of labor. While labor productivity is an important factor in carrying out maintenance, it also is influenced by outside factors. However, few realize the impact of being able to improve maintenance productivity. Certain bituminous coals of recent geological age are known to contain a significant quantity of natural (fossil or subfossil) resin. Such resinous coals are found in the western U.S., particularly the Wasatch Plateau coal field in Utah. Some of the seams in this field contain approximately 5% resin which has been recovered by gravity and/or flotation processes since 1929. Resin concentrates thus produced are of low quality and are usually refined by solvent extraction and precipitation. The purified resins are of commercial importance, being used in the adhesive, varnish, enamel and ink industries, etc: Recently, an improved flotation technique has been developed which involves ozone conditioning to selectively float resin from such coals. In this flotation process, a concentrate product which contains 95% resin at a recovery of 80% can be obtained in a single stage from coal containing approximately 10% resin, whereas conventional flotation at a similar level of recovery produces a concentrate having a resin content of 30-40%. Economic analysis shows that the ozone flotation process has good potential for use by industry.

1. Introduction In Sayreville, New Jersey, the Middlesex County Utilities Authority put the construction of a 1041 m long sewer outlet to tender in June 1989. It had an internal diameter of 3,36 m and was part of a sewage treatment works project for county Middlesex. The contract was awarded to the Lodigiani Company, USA, who employed Hochtief Incorporated as subcontractor to drive the sewer outfall. 2. Ground Conditions According to the preliminary geological site investigation, carried out by the consultants Metcalf & Eddy, the tunnel passed through marine deposits.

Presented is a stability analysis for a trial stope in a lead-zinc mine. The trial scope would have an excavation width of 20 m with an initial height of 3 m. Filling would commence when the scope was heightened to 6 m. A two-pronged approach to predict the stability of such an opening was used viz. the finite element method and the rock mass classification method. Corroboration is shown to exist between the two methods. Deep borehole extensometer observations during stope extraction have been compared with predicted displacements.

The following is a progress report on a continuing study being made by the Sanitary District for purposes of developing reliable data for predicting costs and progress on future tunnel contracts. All data available to date on five separate tunnel contracts has been analyzed. All were machine-mined in soft ground, all used steel ribs and wood lagging and finished inside diameters varying from 5'6" to 6'6". Basic data regarding progress per shift, hours mined per shift, hours of downtime per shift, cause of downtime and type of soil mined were reported by the District's resident engineer at the job site. Figure 1, Weekly Mining Report is an example of the form used. Data regarding manpower and equipment used during tunnelling operations was also supplied by the resident engineer during the course of construction. Soil type being mined was verified by the resident engineer during construction, by visual observation, and compared with data listed on a previously prepared soil profile. Fine crushing and rod grinding have been investigated using a laboratory-scale jaw crusher and a rod mill. The net energy consumption in both crushing and grinding was evaluated from torque measurements. An empirical relationship was established between energy consumption, particle size and operating parameters. When the mill feed size is reduced, through fine crushing, to about 80% passing 3 mm, the energy consumption will be minimized in a comminution chain of fine crushing and coarse rod grinding. The results in fine crushing were compared with a large-scale test.

The Golden Bear refractory gold ore roasting operation is located at Huddy Lake, in northwestern British Columbia, about BO km northwest of Telegraph Creek (see Figure 1). The mine access road, used for supplies delivery, was developed by Golden Bear and consists of a radio controlled 155 km gravel road originating at Highway 114. Hine operations are based on a two week in, two week out rotating shift schedule with personnel transport by chartered aircraft from Vancouver, Whitehorse or the 3 Talthan conmunities. The site runway Is located adjacent to the tailings impoundment.

A method of hand-calculating the air-cooling requirements of a conceptualized underground mining operation is presented for the reader's orientation. Separate air heat load calculations were conducted for adiabatic compression, electromechanical equipment, wallrock, broken rock, groundwater, and blasting operations. The air heat sources were calculated for four mining levels under conditions representative of a typical planned mining operation at depth. The total heat gain on each level will approximate the level air-cooling requirements. The results of these hand calculations can be further modified by the use of mine ventilation computer software that refine the heat-source calculations, predict underground ambient air temperatures, and establish the air-cooling requirements of a mine. INTRODUCTION The principal mining method employed is a modified vertical crater retreat (VCR) blasthole operation. Typical scopes range from 20 to 40 feet wide, 75 to 100 feet long, and 100 feet in height. Six and one-half inch blastholes are drilled with an "in the hole" hammer drill. Eight-foot high horizontal rounds are blasted down. Mucking of ore from the undercut to orepass is done with LHD equipment operated from a remote control station. Backfill includes hydraulically placed tailings with cement, and waste rock when available. Stope access is from ramp sub-levels on 50-foot vertical intervals. Crosscuts are ramped down to the first stope cut 25 feet below the sub-level elevation. Then the crosscuts are raised by taking down the back when each stope cut is completed, until an elevation 25 feet above the sub-level is reached. The crosscuts are filled with tailings, and/or waste rock. See Figure 1. Typically, a two-pronged approach to defining the air-cooling requirements is conducted. First, the principal sources that make up the air heat load are individually hand-calculated. Second, projections of mine heat load are calculated by utilizing computer modeling techniques. This paper discusses the first method (hand calculations) of determining the individual components of heat flow into the mine. CALCULATED AIR HEAT LOADS Adiabatic Compression The plans for the mine include delivery of 300,000 cfm of air to ventilate the lower level operation. This is equivalent to approximately 200 cfm/ton of rock produced (300,000 cfm/1500 tpd of ore and waste). As air flows down a shaft, with no heat interchange between the shaft and air and no evaporation of moisture taking place, the air is heated in the same way as if it were compressed in a compressor. Dry air increases in temperature about 5.4°F per 1000 feet. One BTU is added to each pound of air for every 778 feet of decrease in elevation, or is subtracted for the same elevation increase. For dry air, the dry-bulb temperature change is 1/(0.24 x 778) = 0.00535°F/ft., or 1°F/187 ft. elevation. Auto-compression may be masked by the presence of other heating or cooling sources, such as shaft wallrock, groundwater, air and water lines, electrical facilities, etc. The major factors influencing the temperature of the air delivered underground by a shaft are (1) the night time cool air temperature's effect on the rock or lining of the shaft, (2) temperature gradient of ground rock related to depth, and (3) evaporation of moisture within the shaft which increases the latent temperature and decreases the sensible temperature. [Calculation For Adiabatic Heat of Compression] a. Assumptions: 1. Three hundred thousand cfm of fresh air at 3000 level has increased in temperature during the summertime to the point where it has little available cooling power. Air-cooling will be required on 3000 Level and below. 2. Elevation of 3000 Level is approximately +1000 ft. above sea level.

"In underground mining, machine design is predominantly dictated by mine conditions and individual customer desires. In partnership with Foresight Energy, J. H. Fletcher & Company was tasked to design and manufacture a new roof bolting machine with six independent drilling apparatus on board capable of drilling and bolting the roof and ribs with material handling. This is the first Fletcher® six head machine to be designed and built for the mines in the United States. The machine is intended to work in the Illinois Coal Basin. The objective was to produce a machine capable of drilling and installing six bolts simultaneously with a limited number of operators. The goal of the mine is to decrease the time to bolt a cut to improve the safety level of the current roof bolting method, improve efficiency and to improve the bottom line cost of entry development. The customer wanted four mast feed drills at the front of the machine dedicated to installing roof bolts and then another two mast feed drills behind them dedicated to rib bolts. This dictated the requirement of latched controls, which would allow the operator to start drilling one hole and then latch the controls to be able to move on to the next. To accomplish this, we developed a unique hydraulic latch circuit to maintain operator safety and compliance. Guarding was added to prevent an operator from coming into accidental contact with a latched drill. The result of the design is a machine with a single platform and six independent masts with drillheads: four masts strictly for drilling and installing roof bolts on the front of the platform and then two masts on the back of the platform for rib bolts. The feed and rotation controls at each operator’s station include a latch control for drilling. The latch control will allow the operator to lock in the feed and rotation once the hole has been collared, allowing the operator to move on to the next hole. The rear of the machine is equipped with material handling. There are two material pods with winch controls as well as a mesh rack that includes mesh lift, mesh tilt and mesh sump. The six-head roof bolter allows fewer operators to drill and install roof and rib bolts, which in turn lowers the miners’ roof exposure per cut. This design reduces the operator’s exposure from the inherent pinch points and rotary hazards once he has engaged the latch drilling. Therefore the machine will help to decrease the time to bolt a cut, improving productivity while enhancing the ability to operate the machine safely. INTRODUCTION When mining underground it is necessary to support the roof quickly to prevent it from collapsing after an area has been mined. Since the 1950s, the primary method for supporting the roof has been the installation of roof bolts. Roof bolting is one of the most basic functions yet one of the dangerous jobs in the underground mining operation (1). The Mine Safety and Health Administration’s (MSHA) Health and Safety Accident Classification injury database showed an average of 660 roof bolter operator accidents per year over a 5-year period (1999-2003) (2). The numbers show that roof bolting is the most hazardous machine-related job in underground mining. It represents 39 percent of all machine-related accidents in underground coal mines. In 1993, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study that has shown the activity of drilling as the most hazardous job task performed by a roof bolter operator, accounting for 31 percent of all roof bolting injuries (3). Almost half (46%) of these drilling injuries were due to falling rocks or coal from the roof. All of these injuries occurred under supported roof. The majority of these injuries (about 99%) are not caused by a major roof collapse but from falls of smaller rock from the immediate roof. This type of roof failure has also been termed “skin fall.”"

In the Gold-Cyanide Process (GCP) the cyanide anions act to solubilize the gold and silver present in the ore, and mercury as well. The resulting mercury and cyanide rich effluent are serious health and environmental problems. Currently, there is no mercury treatment from the ore leach solution since there are no precipitating agents or other technologies which can be used effectively in the pH ~ 10solutions. Recently, however, we have developed a new chelate ligand that is impervious to this level of pH and it can be used to precipitate Hg from NaCN solutions. On an actual sample taken from an active gold mine the chelate selectively reduced the mercury level from 34.5 ppm to 0.008 ppm within 15 minutes. Importantly, the gold and silver levels remained unchanged throughout this process. Thus, the environmental impact of Hg released in the GCP can be drastically reduced. Moreover, with a mercury treatment technology now available it may be possible to change, or reinvent, the entire GCP process.

INTRODUCTION In looking over the diversity of the papers that are being presented during this meeting on The Industrial Practice of Fine Coal Processing one cannot help but be impressed with the progress the industry has made in beneficiating fine raw coals, and in the number of innovations that are under study to increase recovery and to improve the quality of the finest size particles produced at a preparation plant. Those who are not in our industry, who look at the technical program, might be confused, when they see that the papers include such topics as cleaning to zero and heavy media cyclone cleaning 28M x 100M; application and performance of fine coal jigs, tables, hydrocyclones, spirals, and flotation; filtration, dewatering and thermal drying; and ancilliary aspects such as fines handling, instrumentation and process control plus screening and liberation. This is an observation and not a criticism of the diversity of papers being presented. The program fits within the parameters of fine coal preparation as the term "coal preparation" is defined, but perhaps not as the term "fine coal" is defined. Admittedly these definitions are sometimes loose. However, each should be made more definitive if a meaningful fine coal preparation overview is to be possible. COAL PREPARATION DEFINED In the opinion of the writer, the term "coal preparation" should be defined as including all work activities that are performed on all components of a run-of-mine coal from the time it leaves a surface reserve or an underground portal, until all components are either ready for shipment or are stowed on, or in the earth in an environmentally acceptable manner. This definition excludes the work that is performed to improve coal quality or handleability inside the mine or pit. This work is commonly called "face" or "pit" preparation. FINE COAL DEFINED The term "fine coal" means different things to different people. In the past, anthracite finer than No. 3 Buckwheat (3/16 in.) was considered fines which often were discarded from the breaker as an unsalable by product; and bituminous coals finer that about 1/4 in. (slack) were either discarded or sold at cost to prevent an accumulation of "no bills" which referred to a product having no immediate sale. Although a standard definition of "fine coal" is yet to be accepted by the industry, a designation of coals by particle-size range has evolved through the wide use of three-circuit flowsheets, wherein the optimum size range by washer type determines the size fractions: a coarse-coal circuit for the plus 3/8 in., a -11- coal circuit for the 3/8 in. x 28 Mesh, and a fine-coal circuit for the remaining 28 Mesh x 0. Logically, the term "fine coal" should refer to some resultant size fraction or some top size by zero. This definition should include a 28 Mesh x 0 feed to a flotation cell but should exclude a 28 x 100 Mesh size fraction fed to a heavy media cyclone. Failure to include the resultant sizes in the definition precludes accounting of the full range of particle sizes present in the feed to the plant. Since the 28 Mesh x 0 fraction is treated in the final circuit of the three discreet washing circuits, now almost always used in U.S. commercial applications, and since it contains all of its resultant sizes, in the writer's opinion, it should be designated "fine coal". FINE COAL CLEANING Cleaning coal fines, which in the past was at best marginally profitable, is now an essential part of coal preparation strategy for a number of reasons : 1. In the early 1900s, vat leaching was a common process for treating gold ores. It was, however, labor intensive and was abandoned in the 1930s. Technology advances in recent years, though, have caused vat leaching to once again become a viable alternative in precious metal processing. At least three plants have been built. Others are being considered as alternatives to agitation and heap leaching. What is vat leaching? Vat leaching is a process in which ore is crushed and screened to a size of between 6 to 12 mm ( 0.25 to 0.5 in.) This crushed ore is placed in a large, boxlike container where an alkaline-cyanide solution is added and later removed. The process might be likened to indoor, controlled heap leaching. The ore does not require fine grinding in a ball mill. Therefore, capital and operating costs are lower than agitation treatment. But the extra handling causes costs to be slightly higher than heap leaching. If any amount of fines is present, the ore should be agglomerated.

Water has received little attention as a variable in flotation, even though it is a known fact that water hardness often has an adverse effect on purity and recovery, particularly on the flotation of non-metallic minerals. Because of this fact, process water used in some flotation plants is treated to reduce hardness to an acceptable level. In the laboratory, distilled water is usually used as the flotation medium in order to standardize conditions, whereas in flotation plants locally available water is used. At Rosiclare Works of Aluminum Company of America, Rosiclare, Illinois, where a vein-type of fluorspar deposit was being processed by flotation to make an acid-grade fluorspar concentrate until February of 1968 when the plant was closed, qualitative correlations had been observed between metallurgy and reagent consumption and the seasons of the year. The observed effects were thought to be due to seasonal variations in the quality of Ohio River water used as the flotation medium. Figure 1 shows the variations in total hardness and chloride contents of Ohio River water at Rosiclare for the period September 1964 through September 1967. During this period, the sulfate content varied from 85 to 245 ppm (as Na2SO4), the calcium from 90 to 160 ppm (as CaCO3) and the magnesium from 50 to 70 ppm (as CaCO3). The data in Figure 1 show that the total hardness and chloride contents are highest in the late summer and fall which are usually periods of low water and lowest in late winter and spring which are usually periods of high water.

White Pine Copper Company built and operated, from August, 1962 through May, 1963, a pilot plant to recover copper using a cyanide percolation leach of the sand fraction (+400 mesh) of the mill tailings (1, 2, 3). The pilot plant runs were metallurgically successful and preliminary engineering studies for a full scale operation were completed under contract by an outside engineering firm. Unfortunately, the net return projected at that time did not justify the proposed capital' investment. In the summer of 1973 the project was revived. The rise in selling price of copper over the previous ten years, compared to the projected operating cost of the leach plant, increased the calculated net return on investment with the most recent figures showing a 30% DCF. Basically, the reason for this favorable shift in profitability was that the cost for many of the reagents did not go up as fast in the previous ten years as did the selling price of copper. Using the Chemical Marketing Reporter costs, NaCN sold for 18.3¢/lb in 1963 and 20.75¢/lb in August, 1973. During this same period H2S04 went from $23.50 per ton to $35.90 per ton. In comparison, producer's prices for electrolytic copper were 31¢/lb in 1963 and 619 in 1973. Thus the price of copper went up 97% while the two reagents only increased 13% and 53%, respectively. The capital investment also escalated but, again, not to the same extent as the selling price of copper. These price differences no longer are valid' but they did provide justification for reexamining the project.

Coal cleaning can be effected by the bacterium Sulfolobus acidocaldarius, which in oxidizing sulfur and dissolving mineral matter requires carbon dioxide and oxygen; carbon dioxide as a carbon source and oxygen as an electron acceptor. The desulfurization of coal by thermophilic bacteria under elevated partial pressures of carbon dioxide and oxygen was studied at a total pressure of 1 atm. The partial pressure of carbon dioxide was varied over the range 0.00032 to 0.33 atm (0.00032, 0.007, 0.10, 0.33 atm), and the partial pressure of oxygen was varied over the range 0.14 to 0.40 atm (0.14, 0.21, 0.30, 0.40 atm). The maximum rate of coal desulfurization increased by 32%, from 9.0 to 11.9 mg S/1 hr, as air was enriched in carbon dioxide from its atmospheric level of 0.00032 atm to 0.10 atm. Enrichment with carbon dioxide up to 0.10 atm, at constant oxygen partial pressures, increased the desulfurization rate, but enrichment to 0.33 atm caused the rate to decrease. At constant carbon dioxide partial pressures, the desulfurization rate was maximum at oxygen partial pressures of 0.21 and 0.30 atm. At higher (0.40 atm) and lower (0.14 atm) oxygen partial pressures the rate decreaed by 9 to 20%. The desulfurization rate decreased by 58X, from 9.0 to 3.8 mg S/1 hr, when the air pressure was increased from 1 atm to 3 atm. The effects justify an economic analysis during design and operation of a commercial air feed in a process to desulfurize coal by microbial action.

Geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) are manufactured barrier layers containing a high-quality sodium bentonite clay attached or adhered to geotextiles or a geomembrane. The GCL's low permeability and high strength make it an ideal replacement for low permeability soil or clay liners for mineral extraction and processing containment applications. This paper will discuss the advantages of utilizing a GCL versus compacted clay in containment applications. Some of the advantages include: the GCL's lower permeability (5 x 10-9 centimeters per second (cm/sec)) and corresponding better composite liner leakage protection, the GCL' s greater resistance to desiccation, differential subsidence and freeze­thaw, and lastly, the ease and speed of installing the GCL. This paper will also detail a number of important case studies related to the mineral extraction and processing industry. These case studies include using GCL in two large reclamation capping projects, as a secondary liner in two gold heap leach pads, as a composite liner in a dam for stormwater runoff control, and lastly, as a primary liner for a tailings runoff diversion channel.

The role of bacterial oxidation in the mining industry is becoming more widely accepted. Western Australia has accepted the technology as a pretreatment for refractory gold concentrates more readily than most. The third of such plants has been completed at the Y ouanmi Gold Mine. This is situated approxi­mately 500 kilometres north east of Perth, in the Yilgarn mineral field. Y ouanmi concentrates are produced from underground ore and contain arsenopyrite and pyrite as the main sulphide miner­als. Refractory gold from this deposit is generally associated with the arsenopyrite portion of the material. Gold Mines of Australia Ltd ("GMA") initiated pilot scale testing at the BacTech premises in November 1993. The decision by GMA to use BacTech's technology was announced in February 1994. Design and construction commenced at this time. Bacterial growth on site was initiated in July 1994 and continuous opera­tion began in the October. Concentrate was added at 0.5 tonnes per hour and this has increased to 1 tonne per hour.

World demand of sulphur-in-all-forms (SAF), which in 1985 is estimated to total 57.5 million tonnes S equivalent, is expected to increase to 77.6 million tonnes S by the year 2000. Key factors are the evolution of sulphur demand in the USSR, China, and the developing countries notably India, Brazil, and the countries in North Africa and the Near East with vertically integrated phosphate industries. Brimstone will remain the dominant sulphurous raw material notwithstanding the progressive increase in the supply and use of sulphur in other forms resulting mainly from the enhanced recovery df pollution sulphur and the increased use of sulphur in pyrites in those countries with this sulphur resource. Sulphur demand for phosphate fertilizer manufacture is expected to have the main impact on world sulphur demand, but in contrast to the industrially advanced countries where non- fertilizer sulphur use is not expected to increase measurably, this demand sector is expected to be of some importance in those developing countries with dynamic economies and in the centrally planned economies of East Europe and the Far East.

Introduction Today, more than 50% of rail-carried commodities are mineral industry related, with coal being the most important single commodity moved by rail. In 1980, coal accounted for more than 5.7 million of the total 22.6 million carloads moved by rail. Metallic ores were third behind grain, with more than 1.4 million carloads. Crushed stone, gravel, sand, and other non-metallic minerals totaled almost 2.3 million carloads. Chemicals and allied products, including fertilizer and coke, added another 1.7 million cars, with petroleum and petroleum products totaling 300,000 carloads. Coal Several things happened in the 1970s that gave rise to increased consumption of coal-particularly western coal-and to its dominant position among rail-carried commodities. First, the Clean Air Act of 1970 required generating plants to make significant reductions in sulfur dioxide emissions. To comply, utilities could either invest in scrubbers or switch to low-sulfur western coal. Many opted for the latter. By 1972, increasing demands by the utility companies halted what had been a 25-year decline in national coal consumption. Second, the Arab Oil Embargo of 1973 put an end to cheap oil and gas, limiting their future as fuels for electric generating purposes and increasing the potential for coal. Third, in 1977, President Carter announced an energy program with coal as its cornerstone, calling for an annual two-thirds increase in national coal production by 1985. He also called for conversion to coal by utilities and large industrial users. Finally, he proposed a 10-year, $10 billion program to encourage domestic coal production and stimulate development of export markets. Coal bounded into world prominence. Foreign demand for steam and metallurgical coal increased tremendously, while US demand for western coal also shot up. This meant greater demands on the transportation sectors that traditionally carried coal to market. Many railroads began programs to serve the coal industry. One example is Burlington Northern's commitment to handle increased western coal tonnages. The company spent more than $1 billion in recent years to develop a system capable of moving more than 91 Mt (100 million st) of coal each year. Other leaders in this renewal were Norfolk and Western, Union Pacific, Santa Fe, and Southern Pacific railways. The importance of the rapid growth of coal traffic to the railroads is shown in the accompanying table, which gives percentages of total tonnages hauled and revenues attributed to coal. With coal providing the railroad industry with a substantial share of its revenues, there is keen competition among the rail companies themselves and among railroads and other transportation sectors for coal haulage. But there is also cooperation when more than one railroad is involved in delivering the coal from mine to market or when a combination of transportation modes is more economical. The latter is represented by Conrail's interest in working with the port authorities of New York and New Jersey to establish a new coal port that would serve not only export markets, but also utilities and industries in the northeast. Iron Ore Next to coal, iron ore (taconite) is the most important single mineral commodity handled by railroads. In Minnesota, where most iron ore is produced, rail transportation is primarily by Burlington Northern and the Duluth, Missabe, & Iron Range Railway Co. (DM&IR). The DM&IR, owned by US Steel, serves several producers on the Mesabi Iron Range. Two of the larger producers, Erie Mining Co. and Reserve Mining Co., also own railroads that operate between the mines and the ports of Silver Bay and Taconite Harbor on Lake Superior. Several iron mines and taconite plants in Michigan are served by the Chicago and Northwestern, and the Soo Line. Total 1981 shipments of taconite and iron ore are estimated at 55.9 Mt (55 million It), compared with about 61 Mt (60 million It) in 1979 the most ever shipped in one year. The Caribou sulfide deposit near Bathurst, New Brunswick (Figure 1) is illustrative of one variety of strata-bound sulfide deposits. It consists of numerous near-vertical sulfide lenses which are concordant to the foliation and lithologic layering of low-grade metamorphic host rocks. Pyrite is the chief mineral in these lenses, but appreciable quantities of sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and galena are also present. Rocks in the Caribou mine area belong to the Tetagouche Group of Ordovician age. They consist chiefly of (1) quartz-sericite and quartz- sericite- feldspar schists, (2) greenschists, and (3) slate and phyllite. The trends of these steeply dipping rocks define the trace of a tight, steeply plunging fold structure, the Caribou fold (Figure 2). This fold plunges approximately 750 to the north-northwest; its axial plane strikes N.20°E. and dips steeply westward. Sulfide lenses of the Caribou deposit are associated spatially with the Caribou fold. The deposit is located in the fold along the contact between quartz-sericite and quartz-sericite-feldspar schists on the hanging wall and quartz-chlorite-sericite phyllites and graphitic schist on the footwall (Figure 3). Genesis of the Caribou deposit is ambiguous because its strata-bound form suggests syngenetic sulfide deposition, whereas its location within a fold suggests structurally controlled epigenetic mineralization. Acceptability of a particular genetic model rests on establishing the time of mineralization relative to deposition, deformation, and metamorphism of the associated rocks. To establish the timing for Caribou mineralization, the deformational histories of rock and sulfide, respectively, were compared. Epigenetic and syngenetic models can be tested against this interpreted structural history of the Caribou deposit.
