INTRODUCTION The City of Oslo together with the neighbor municipalities, Baerum and Asker, are presently building a jointly owned sewage treatment plant located on the west side of the inner Oslofjord. The project is scheduled for completion late 1981. Because the location of the treatment plant is at a distance of about 20 miles (30 km) from the city center, a discharge of more than 13 yds 3/sec (10 m3/sec.) of sewage and storm water will have to be transported over considerable distances. The topography of the area and the geological conditions early indicated that the only realistic transport method had to be through tunnels. As planning proceeded, full face tunnel boring emerged more and more as a favorable alternative to conventional drill and blast medhods. Today the scheme comprises nearly 25 miles (40 km) of tunnels being excavated by full face tunnel borers. In addition a number of access tunnels and cross cuts are to be excavated by conventional methods.

The Roybal Raise incorporates the simplicity and low cost of a short bald-headed raise while overcoming the usual impediments to driving a high baldheaded raise. The concept provides for speedy excavation and maximizing the use of the excavated opening, using the rock for structural support. The design is simple: two baldheaded raises are driven parallel to one another, interconnected by dogholes about 8 m (25 ft) apart. In this fashion, the raise can be driven safely and efficiently to 60 m (200 ft) or more. When the raise is complete, the excavation requires no timber for support or partitioning. Rather, the rock itself supports the construction. As a test, a two-compartment Roybal Raise was attempted at the Independence mine in the Willow Creek District of Alaska. One side was driven 2 x 2 m (6 x 6 ft), intended for a manway and equipment skip. The other was driven 1.5 x 1.5 m (5 x 5 ft) for a muck compartment. Both sides were driven at a 65° angle from horizontal and 1 x 1 m (4 x 4 ft) dogholes spanned the 4.6-m (15-ft) pillar between the two compartments. After topping out at 50 m (160 ft), the raise was found to meet all expectations of efficiency, low cost, and practical simplicity. Technique Preparing the Roybal Raise for driving involves no elaborate or costly site prep except assembling materials and providing for muck removal. Normally, the raise muck falls directly onto the sill or track and is picked up either by an overshot mucker or a front-end loader. Raise mining proceeds initially by taking up both compartments simultaneously to the first doghole. It progresses by alternating one side as a clear manway for access with the other side, the active side, as a muck compartment (Fig. 1A). This stage proceeds quickly for no mucking or staging is required to cycle the first three rounds. On the fifth round, in addition to the normal raise round, rib holes are winged out toward the adjacent raise, thus starting the dogholes. Finally, as the sixth raise rounds are drilled and shot, the first doghole is also completed from both sides. The second stage commences by establishing one side as a clear manway for access while the other side, used as a muck compartment, is prepared for active mining. Figure 1B illustrates this step in the succession of raising with the active side advancing to the second doghole level. During this stage, services are maintained through the manway side and equipment is stowed in the doghole during blasting. As the active side advances, muck may be allowed to fill the bottom portion of that side since it is unnecessary to clear it for access. The next stage of raising involves cleaning out the former muck compartment and preparing it for use as a manway. At the same time, the former manway is prepared for advance and use as a muck compartment (Fig. 1C). As in the previous step, the same doghole is used for access and equipment storage. The active side advances until the second doghole is completed, at which point equipment and access are moved to the new doghole. From there, the active side is driven past the second doghole 8 m (25 ft) more to the third doghole level. Again, half of the doghole and the next raise round are mined. The fourth stage involves switch ing back the manway side for the muck side (Fig. ID). The new muck side is driven to the third doghole where equipment storage and access are reestablished. From there, the active side is advanced to the fourth doghole. In the same fashion, the raise is advanced to the top, alternating the manway side with the active side, maintaining access through the inactive manway, and storing equipment in the uppermost doghole. A thorough Life Cycle Assessment of ilmenite extraction and processing to yield synthetic rutile (ERMS/EARS process) was performed according to ISO norms 14040 and updates. The LCA includes the parallel application of selected environmental impact assessment methods (as illustrated in Ulgiati et al. [1]), the results of which are compared and discussed. A MI value of 16 kg of abiotic matter per kg of output rutile is calculated, which is largely determined by the amount of coal that is employed in the reduction and drying steps. The Gross Energy Requirement is 3.33 * 107 MJ/kg, a value which we found to be comparable with that previously calculated by us for alumina. Finally, the increase factor of the Emergy Intensity from the raw mineral to the marketed rutile is 3.19, which points to a comparatively medium-low requirement for indirect environmental support. GWP and AP were calculated to be respectively 1.89 kg(CO2eq)/kg and 12.7 g(SO2eq)/kg.

Introduction The role of marketing in the minerals and mining industry takes on different degrees of importance depending on the commodity, but nowhere are sales and marketing more important than in industrial minerals. This article compares industrial minerals marketing with the marketing of other mining and mineral products. Marketing in Mining Some broad generalizations on the marketing of industrial minerals in relation to other mineral products can be made without getting bogged down with exceptions to generalizations. Two totally different areas of mineral production are crude oil and natural gas, and metals, including ores and concentrates. Although these commodities are the basis for two completely different industries, they share two things in common from a marketing standpoint: • Their value per unit volume is usually high enough so that they can be transported great distances. • Their specifications are readily definable and, therefore, the quality of a standard product from a production run can be communicated by stating certain chemical and physical features. This permits sales to be consummated by telephone, telex, and letter, without the need to pretest the products under use conditions. In regard to the first item, industrial minerals, as opposed to oil, gas, and metals, are in most instances site specific. Location of the point of production in relation to the point of use is of paramount importance based on a generally lower unit to volume value. This means that transportation is a major factor, with the cost of getting the mineral to market commonly exceeding its f.o.b. value. From 2009 to 2012, Aker Wirth, in cooperation with the BGR (German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources), developed a concept for the deep sea mining of manganese nodules, which it also examined by means of a profitability analysis. The study was undertaken for the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. The increasing scarcity of resources, coupled with the continuous rise in resource prices, drive the search for new raw material deposits. As a result, the deep sea is coming increasingly under the spotlight. At depths of more than 1,000 m (3,280 ft), large deposits of ores and precious and high-tech metals, such as manganese, cobalt, nickel, copper and gold, along with rare earths (which are important for the high-tech industry), can be found. The extreme deep sea conditions ? enormous water pressure, ice-cold temperatures and complete darkness ? present huge financial and technical challenges to the mining industry when extracting these materials. Aker Wirth has recognized the potential of this important future market early on and advances the development of relevant products.

Semimobile in-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) systems can help reduce truck haulage in openpit mines by bringing the crusher closer to the excavation areas. Optimizing a production schedule with semimobile IPCC requires integrating extraction sequence, destination policy, crusher relocation, conveyor layout and truck fleet investment decisions. A mining complex with multiple mines and IPCC systems should be optimized simultaneously to find an optimal schedule for the entire value chain. An integrated stochastic optimization framework is proposed to produce long-term production schedules for mining complexes using multiple semimobile IPCC systems. The optimization model has flexibility to select the crusher locations and conveyor routes from anywhere inside the pits. The framework uses simulated orebody realizations to consider multielement grade uncertainty and manage associated risk. A hybrid metaheuristic solution approach based on simulated annealing and evolutionary algorithms is implemented. The method is demonstrated using an iron ore mining complex

"The effectiveness of reagent adsorption onto hematite ore particle surfaces is critical during beneficiation to promote effective selective flocculation and dispersion and increase iron oxide recovery. The relationship between aqueous calcium in the process water and the effectiveness of common iron ore dispersants has never before been studied. The nature of common dispersants was studied in the presence and absence of calcium in the process water. The settling behavior of hematite-rich iron ore at pH 11 was assessed in the presence of calcium and inorganic dispersants: sodium silicate, sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP), sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) and organic dispersant ethylenediamenetetraacetic acid (EDTA). It was found that inorganic dispersants are ineffective at a pH of 11 without activating the surface sites of the ore particles with calcium. Organic dispersants, however, were found to be effective with and without surface site activation.IntroductionThe United States produced 54 million metric tons of concentrated iron ore in 2011 (Jorgenson, 2013). Over 8 Mt were produced using a process known as selective flocculation and dispersion (CCI, 2011). The grade of this ore is slowly depleting, making it imperative that processing efficiency improves. To increase processing efficiency, a complete understanding of the effects of chemical reagents in the process must be acquired. This process relies heavily on dispersants to disperse iron oxides from gangue minerals in settling processes. The mechanism that these dispersants use to disperse the ore and its relationship to calcium in the process water has never been studied. The following extended abstract summarizes the relationship between aqueous calcium in process water and the effectiveness of common iron ore dispersants at dispersing hydrated hematite ore. These tests were carried out at a pH of 11, as this is a typical pH used to ensure dispersion in selective flocculation and dispersion processes."

"Field observations on replacements of 12-inch constant cross-section double disc cutters in Tuzla Wastewater Tunnel excavated by an EPB TBM with 3.151 mm excavation diameter excavating hard rock are summarized. Cutter life is correlated to rock’s uniaxial compressive strength and Cerchar abrasivity index, and TBM operational parameters. Number of cutter replacements, average cutter replacement rates and types of cutter damages are summarized. The relationships between cutter life and rock properties and TBM operational parameters are analyzed by single variable regression method. Detailed analysis between chainages 1+200 and 1+982 km indicates that average cutter consumption rate is 35.7 m3/replacement (4.6 m/replacement). Cerchar abrasivity index and uniaxial compressive strength does not indicate any meaningful relationship with cutter life. Penetration per revolution and field specific energy might be used for predicting lives of constant cross-section double disc cutters. However, additional data is required to generalize the findings of this study. INTRODUCTION Cutter life / replacement and/or consumption rates in terms of cutter cost and replacement time loses is one of the most important parameters affecting excavation performance of mechanical excavators, especially of TBMs used very widely and equipped with usually disc cutters. Predicting cutter cost is a very important task in especially feasibility stage of tunneling projects. Basic parameters affecting cutter life can be classified into 3 general groups as geological and geotechnical, excavation machine (TBM) related, and operational parameters (Bilgin et al., 2013). The geological and geotechnical parameters are the most dominant ones among them. The machine related parameters should be arranged in accordance with the expected geological and geotechnical conditions for the best TBM excavation performance and minimum cost."

The liberation and exposure of valuable mineral grains in ore particles are of significant importance in understanding the efficiency of flotation separations. A flotation feed sample from the Kensington concentrator was scanned by micro Xray computed tomography (micro-XCT), to determine the liberation and exposure of auriferous pyrite grains. The analysis results suggest a satisfying extent of liberation for particle sizes smaller than 212 μm. Theoretical flotation recovery of pyrite for selected particle size fractions was predicted from the three-dimensional liberation and exposure analysis. The plant flotation tail was also characterized by micro-XCT to identify liberated and partially liberated pyrite particles that might not be collected into the concentrate. However, liberation analysis of the tail sample revealed that the majority of liberated pyrite was recovered in the plant flotation circuit. Trainable Weka, a machine learning segmentation approach, was compared with the Watershed thresholding segmentation for the 106 × 45 μm particle size fraction scanned at a voxel size of 1.85 μm. Improved segmentation of small particles was found using the machine learning method.

The United States Bureau of Reclamation is constructing the $200 million Navajo Indian Irrigation Project to irrigate 110,000 acres of land on the Navajo Indian Reservation in northwestern New Mexico. Water from the San Juan River is impounded by Navajo Dam and will be conducted for 26 miles along a series of tunnels and canals to the area to be irrigated. Tunnel No. 3 is the third in a series of six tunnels along the route. Bids for construction of Tunnel No. 3 were received by the Bureau of Reclamation in September, 1970. Fluor Utah was low bidder at $8.7 million. Ten of the 12 bids were based on excavation by tunnel boring machine. The consulting firm of A. A. Mathews, Inc., was retained by the contractor to advise on geologic and rock mechanics conditions after support problems developed in the tunnel. Tunnel No. 3 is 15,264 feet long, has an 18 foot lined diameter, rises approximately one-half inch per 100 feet in the direction being excavated, and is 6,000 feet above sea level. There is one short curve in the alignment. Minimum concrete thickness is 12 inches with eight inches from 'A' to 'B' line making a pay diameter of 21 feet, 4 inches. The tunnel is supported with rock bolts and steel pans. Mole excavation began on May 13, 1971 from a blasted starting chamber. After 46 feet were excavated the mole was shut down and the trailing muck handling equipment was pulled into place. After advancing 1,700 feet in 34 days, unanticipated ground water conditions and ground support problems were encountered slowing moling so that the next 1,000 feet of advance consumed 97 days until December

The Bureau of Mines investigated selective extraction of Au and Ag from a low-grade Au ore containing Hg. Gold and silver were extracted from the ore in cyanide slurries, and Hg extraction was suppressed with sodium or calcium sulfide. Maximum Au extraction and minimum Hg extraction were obtained using solutions containing 0.34 lb NaCN/ton of solution. Increasing the cyanide concentration increased Hg extraction without increasing Au extraction. Mercury extraction from the ore was suppressed with 0-5 to 2.9 Pb CaS/lb Kg in the ore. Gold-to-mercury ratios of 100:1 to 400:1 were obtained in the leach solution, and on the activated carbon in a CIP circuit.

The chemical composition of the Pennsylvanian Bethany Falls Limestone Member of the Swope Formation was investigated using optical emission spectroscopy and both flame and flameless atomic absorption spectroscopy. Elements determined were Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, AI, Si, Na, K, P, Ti, Zn, Cd, Ni, Co, Cu, Pb, Cr, V, and Mo. Over 100 samples were collected from active quarries along a 320-km-long (200-mile) outcrop in northwestern Missouri. Intervals were sampled representing uniform lithology to determine vertical and lateral geochemical variation. The Bethany Falls Limestone is the most extensively quarried Pennsylvanian limestone in Missouri. In 1975, 42 active quarries produced almost 5.4 million tons (6 million st) of stone valued at over 15 million dollars.

The Lucerne Valley Operations of the Minerals, Pigments and Metals Division of Chas. Pfizer & Co., Inca, are located about 5 miles south of the town of Lucerne Valley, California. These operations consist of several limestone quarries, a whiting plant which produces finely pulverized limestone products, a-kiln which produces granular quicklime and lime products, and maintenance shops, warehousing, shipping, and office facilities. Construction of the Lucerne Valley plant began in 1961 as the result of a decision to utilize large undeveloped reserves of limestone in that area. Quarry development was started in the following year; and by 1965, Lucerne Valley had become the principle limestone and lime facility of the Western Operations of the Minerals, Pigments and Metals Division.

The effect of some of the reagents, namely hydrocarbon oil, Syntex (sulfated coconut oil surfactant), pine oil, sodium silicate, and lime, used at the Climax mill on the recovery and grade of molybdenite and gangue minerals has been investigated experimentally using factorially designed test approach in the laboratory. The results of the investigation are presented in two dimensional plots. The lower additions of lime (equivalent to a pH of 8 to 8.5) were desirable for maximizing recovery subject to constraints on grade. Higher additions of pine oil improved recovery, but only at the expense of grade. A mathematical model of the objectives of an operating plant was formulated and optimum reagent conditions obtained.

The Afton property is located 180 air miles East-Northeast of Vancouver and nine miles West of Kamloops, a city of 60,000 people, in South Central British Columbia, Canada. The mine is adjacent to the Trans-Canada Highway at an elevation of 2,200 feet above sea level. The orebody is a porphyry, copper deposit that has undergone supergene alteration. The-major economic minerals in the supergene zone are native copper and chalcocite with chalcopyrite and bornite in the hypergene areas. The grade is one percent with an overall copper distribution: 70% native, 25% chalcocite and 5% chalcopyrite with bornite and covellite. The ore also contains important, but variable amounts of gold and silver.

A test of retrievable geologic storage of spent fuel assemblies from an operating commercial nuclear reactor is underway at the Nevada Test Site (NTS) of the U.S. Department of Energy his generic test is located 420 m below the surface in the Climax granitic stock. Eleven canisters of spent fuel approximately 2.5 years out of reactor core (about 1.6 kW/canister thermal output) were emplaced in a storage drift along with 6 electrical simulator canisters. Two adjacent drifts contain electrical heaters, which are operated to simulate within the test array the thermal field of a large repository. Fuel was loaded during April-May 1980 and initial results of the test will be presented.

This paper is a description of the digital Data Acquisition and control System that is installed at Cities Service's Pinto Valley Concentrator. Pinto Valley Concentrator ? The Pinto Valley Concentrator (5, 41 is located approximately seven miles west of the town of Miami, Arizona. The Concentrator is situated south of the open pit mine and was designed to process 40,000 tons of ore per day with an average grade of .45% copper. The comminution process consists of primary, secondary, and tertiary crushing, and single-stage closed-circuit grinding 161. Concentration of the copper sulfides is by means of froth flotation. Concentrates are transferred to the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Company smelter in Miami, Arizona through a slurry pipeline.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated rapid froth flotation through the use of more efficient bubble-particle collisions that improved the overall flotation kinetics. An in-line static mixer efficiently mixed the air bubbles, water, and ore, rapidly attaching the hydrophobic mineral to the bubble surface. As the mixture entered the flotation chamber, the hydrophobic mineral was already attached to the bubbles and was quickly floated away from the remaining ore pulp. A rougher concentrate containing 4.5 pct copper was obtained from a western porphyry copper ore containing 0.67 pct copper. Over 99 pct copper was recovered from the ore at a rate 7 times faster than conventional flotation.
