Past surface-mining operations in Appalachia primarily followed mountain con-tours. It is estimated that about 18,000 mi. of highwalls are exposed throughout Appalachia. An evaluation procedure for determining the secondary mining potential (SMP) of these highwalls has been proposed. Sixteen parameters affecting the SMP were isolated. These are grouped in four major categories: geologic conditions, existing infrastructure, site conditions, and environmental conditions. The parameters were then ranked by their impact on SMP and assigned weighting factors. A simple mathematical procedure yields an SMP number (0 < SMP < 100), which may then be used to compare alternative sites and technologies. Determination of limits and ranges while grouping data was aided by field visits to over 40 exposed highwalls in Eastern Kentucky. An interactive program has been developed to rapidly evaluate the SMP for pre-mined sites. The mathematical procedure estimates the relative potential (i.e., techno-logical feasibility) for remining for three predominant secondary mining methods: augering, Hi-wall mining, and underground mining. Other secondary mining methods are briefly reviewed and compared.

Resume Guidelines There are some things to remember when preparing a resume. These include: • Limit your resume to one page, unless you have a lot of experience. They are counter-productive. • Make certain your resume is typed professionally. The identification and quantification of incipient overload conditions in mills have recently been found to be very significant in the design of tumbling grinding mills. To investigate these phenomena, a series of experiments was conducted in a Plexiglas mill operated in both dry and wet modes. For on-stream measurement of the mill charge weight, volumetric filling, dynamic angle of repose, and mill power, an electronic system was developed. The mill was filled to various levels with 19.1-mm (3/4-in.) ceramic balls as grinding media. As feed material, grindable limestone or 3.2-mm (1/8-in.) nongrinding ceramic balls were fed at various steady-state rates to determine the incipient overload conditions. The prediction of overload has apparently been reduced to predicting the feed rate that results in 50% mill filling.

It seems appropriate here to open with a quotation from the great pre-Confucian philosopher Lao-tze: "The softest thing in the world dashes against and overcomes the hardest. There is nothing in the world softer or weaker than water, and yet for attacking things that are firm and strong there is nothing that can take precedence of it." I am happy to report that our system of mining has worked out, with minor modifications, as well or better than was predicted. This, in a period of rising labor and material costs, has been most gratifying. Gilsonite is a solid hydrocarbon which occurs in vertical fissures cutting the sandstone and shale beds of the Uintah formation in south¬eastern Utah. It is found in other parts of the world under similar occurrence but nowhere else is it now being mined commercially. The Gilsonite veins on entering the shale members of the Green¬river formation break into small veinlets separated by shale, These veinlets are not now economical to mine.

Mining can be categorized as a hazardous activity, considering some factors such as environmental conditions with a considerable presence of humidity, suspended particles, or falling rocks have affected the severity and number of accidents compared with other economic sectors. The industry analyzes incident reports to narrow the rate of severe injuries and fatalities, conducting root cause analysis and identifying leading indicators. As the International Council on Mining and Metals noted, the vast trove of incident data is not analyzed as much as possible due to a lack of analytics expertise at mine sites. However, machine learning could solve the problem of analyzing all the incident data in a no-timeconsuming way, considering the abundant data, and without using expert personnel in data science. Thus, a Convolutional Neural Network and a Naïve Bayes model were introduced to perform classification in the MSHA database. The database from 2020 consists of 60 fields to describe safety incidents; these fields include mine I.D., accident date, subunit (mill, surface), material extracted, and other metadata.

INTRODUCTION Various methods for sampling placer deposits have been mentioned by Wojcik in Chapter 2. Here, a brief description and comparison of these methods will be given as related to bulk versus drill sampling. The advantages and disadvantages inherent to each will also be given. The means of sampling can be grouped into bulk or drill samples. As a generality, drill samples over a five-foot length will run from I/,, to 1 /, cubic yard, depending on the diameter of the drive shoe on the drill casing. Bulk samples can be expected to be in the range from one to many cubic yards each. SAMPLE METHODS Bulk Bulldozer-dug trenches and dozer or front-end loader pits are two methods to excavate large bulk samples. Smaller bulk samples can be obtained by digging small dimension shafts through the deposit, by hand or caisson-like drills. It is not recommended to split samples by alternate bucket-loads or by other means, as the effect of a nugget falling into one or the other fraction will seriously alter the sample.

A linear programming model with integer sequencing variables is developed to schedule limestone production for a quarry in Central Japan. The model is used to optimize raw material production from the quarry supplying limestone to cement, quick lime and aggregate plants. Typically, the mining in the quarry takes place in four to six different areas each area having 3 or 4 mining increments. Each mining increment contains different quality of limestone. The limestone production from the quarry is transported to the plants byway of 3 ore passes. Each plant requires a given quantity of limestone per period meeting certain quality constraints. This paper will describe development of the scheduling optimization model and how it is used to schedule production by period within the quarry to meet the capacity and blending requirements of the plants.

Though installations of main mine fans vary widely, the commonest installation is of a surface exhaust fan connected to an upcast shaft some distance below its collar by a horizontal fan drift bending sharply. downwards near its junction with the shaft. The junction of the fan drift with the shaft often causes considerable shock pressure loss if not properly designed. In one of the major coal mines in India circulating 180 m3/s of air through the mine a pressure drop of 229 Pa out of the total fan pressure of 568 Pa occurred at this junction while in a smaller gold mine circulating 9.4 m3/s it was 147 Pa out of a fan-drift pressure of 382 Pa. With larger mines circulating larger volumes of air, ill designed fan drifts can lead to considerable wastage of the power of ventilation. Shock loss at the junction of fan drifts with exhaust shafts depends on (1) the angle of deflection of the bend, (2) sharpness of the corners (both inner and outer) at the junction, (3) the degree of contraction of the flow-stream which depends on the cross- sectional area ratio of the shaft and the fan drift as well as the amount of leakage through the shaft collar. It must be noted here that the friction pressure loss in the bend is negligible compared to the shock pressure loss.

The lawyer&apos;s role in underground construction, certainly for the past 20 years, has been principally that of the advocate in disputes resolution. Disputes in underground construction have been steadily increasing, making the lawyer a more prominent participant in the underground construction process. It is widely believed, however, that this is not a salutory state of affairs. It is our thesis that lawyers ought not be eliminated from the process, but rather that their role should be changed. They should function as prophylactics rather than as swords, i.e., they should be used to prevent or reduce disputes rather than, after the fact, to champion their clients&apos; causes. a. Mr. Rubin is a partner in the New York law firm of Postner & Rubin. He has litigated and arbitrated numerous complex construction disputes. He has also participated in efforts to improve contracting practices on committees of ASCE and the National Academy of Engineering. b. INTRODUCTION In this chapter, the term "down-the-hole drill" (DTH drill) is used as a generic name that encompasses the various trade names and other references such as "downhole drill," "in-the-hole drill," etc. This chapter is limited to a description of DTH drills used in stoping large underground ore bodies. DTH drills differ from conventional drills by virtue of the placement of the drill in the drill string. The DTH drill follows immediately behind the bit into the hole, rather than remaining on the feed as with ordinary drifters. Thus, no energy is dissipated through the steel or couplings, and the penetration rate is nearly constant, regardless of the depth of the hole. Since the drill must operate on compressed air and tolerates only small amounts of water, cuttings are flushed either by air with water-mist injection or by standard mine air with a dust collector at the collar. HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT Mine managers have long known the economies enjoyed by quarry and open-pit operators in producing large quantities of ore. The savings are due primarily to the availability of massive equipment, capable of drilling large blastholes to reduce the amount of drilling, increase the fragmentation, reduce secondary blasting, and im¬prove the flow of the product. In an attempt to reduce underground mining costs, various methods are used for long-hole drilling, includ¬ing standard pneumatic percussion drifters and diamond drills. These systems have their shortcomings; percus¬sion drills are limited to small hole sizes and they ex¬perience excessive deviation and significant loss of energy with increased depth. The diamond drills provide deeper and straighter holes, but only at high cost. Both systems suffer from high noise levels, low penetration rates, and poor explosives distribution, among other problems. When the mining companies approached the drill manufacturers for a compact and portable large-hole jumbo for underground use, they specified not more than 1 % deviation on 60 m (200 ft) of vertical hole and a penetration rate of 15 m/h (50 fph). On Dec. 23, 1960, a test unit was placed in service in Montana and met the performance criteria. Though lacking the so¬phisticated features available today, the economies of surface blasting were brought underground. Unfortunately, the first system did not gain immedi¬ate acceptance in the industry. Among the factors con¬tributing to its demise were resistance to change, the need to alter development methods for the ore bodies, and a lack of flexibility in moving the rig from setup to setup and from level to level. In 1972, the mining industry again challenged the drill manufacturers to provide a workable jumbo that would combine compactness, ease of maintenance, relia¬bility, and efficiency, all on a self-propelled chassis. The manufacturers responded by providing improved jumbos, which have been accepted with enthusiasm throughout the mining industry. Today&apos;s DTH jumbos are capable of drilling from 100 to 200 mm (4 to 8 in.) diam holes that can be reamed to even larger diameters. The holes can be drilled to depths of 150 m (500 ft), depending upon ground conditions and the capability of the jumbo to retrieve the steel and drill. Fig. 1 illustrates a typical DTH jumbo. APPLICATIONS The uses to which DTH drill jumbos have been put are quite numerous, with new uses being found regularly. For convenience, these uses may be classified as primary blastholes and nonblasting holes. Primary Blastholes The original purpose for the development of the DTH jumbo was for drilling primary blastholes that could be mined by open-stope methods. Prior to the advent of the DTH jumbo, extensive development was required before production drilling could begin. Sub¬levels were required to allow access for column-and-arm stopers or ring/fan jumbos, to the extent necessary based on the effective penetration of the chosen machine. With the DTH jumbo, the mine engineer is able to reduce preproduction time and development costs. How¬ever, the most significant saving results from an im¬proved cost per ton of broken ore in the production phase. To utilize a DTH system, only a top heading and drawpoints are necessary. The top heading can be the width of the ore body with a 3.7-m (12-ft) back. A drop-raise pattern is drilled and shot to begin the stoping operation, providing a free face for subsequent blasting. A typical layout is illustrated in Fig. 2. The advantages of this system include: 1) Drilling and blasting are independent operations, and blasting can be performed at a rate congruous with the mine&apos;s ton-per-day capacity. 2) The development layout is simplified. 3) Good explosive distribution is achieved, provid¬ing more uniform fragmentation. 4) Environmental conditions for operators are im¬proved, including improved safety with all work directed downward (not overhead), lower noise levels, little fog, and a reduced dust count. 5) Improved production per manshift. 6) Simplified and easier operator work cycles. 7) Reduced cost per ton of product. 8) Fewer holes lost due to ground shifts. Nonblasting Holes With the introduction of the compact DTH jumbos, other practical uses became apparent, including the drilling of: 1) Holes for sand fill, from level to level and from level to stope. 2) Drain and dewatering holes. 3) Power and communications cable holes.

Commercial scale in-situ leach uranium facilities (i.e., solution mining) have operated since late 1975, and have begun to appear in increasing numbers in the last few years. Solution mining involves the pumping of ground water, fortified with oxidizing and complexing agents, into an ore body, leaching and solubilizing the uranium in-situ, and then pumping the solutions to the surface where they are fed to a mill. Milling is by conventional means, involving ion exchange, precipitation, calcining and packaging processes. This paper presents an overview of the solution mining process, and discusses an empirical method that has been used to determine the radon gas release rate in Bq (curies) per year for the overall operation of the facility including wellfields, milling processes and waste storage reservoirs. In addition to radon generation on the surface from radium decay, it has been determined that the major component of radon release is associated with the dynamic generation of radon from solutions returning from underground. Process parameters impacting this evaluation and the mathematical expressions developed are discussed. The preliminary data accrued is presented.

The scale effect on rock properties has been discussed and studied since the introduction of the weakest-link idea by Weibull (1939). In this study, the capabilities of a dynamic lattice network model to simulate failure of rock under uniaxial tension is utilized. A number of randomly distributed microcracks that contribute to the development of uneven stressfields are introduced. In addition, each unit element in the model is assigned a random value representing its strength properties. Each application creates a randomly created specimen that is subjected to uniaxial tension. The specimens are grouped into three sets according to their size. The results of the study show that the scale effect is present in a statistical sense, i.e., the observed statistical distributions of strength for each specimen group is distinctly separate, and they follow the expected inverse relationship between strength and size. The observed probability distribution for each group of specimens give rise to the estimation of a different set of parameters. In this paper, the potential relationships among these parameters as a function of specimen size is investigated.

INTRODUCTION The placement of concrete by means of pumping is one of the fastest growing practices in the construction industry and is widely used in mining applications. In¬troduced in the United States in 1933, this method has been adapted to many aspects of the industry, especially where space for equipment is either limited or inaccessi¬ble. Concrete pumping offers many advantages over other methods of placement. Using pumping equipment, the concrete mixture can be transported in a single operation from a central mixing site to numerous forms in many remote locations, eliminating the need for rehandling the mixture and reducing the labor costs to a minimum. Pressurized pumping provides an extra mix¬ing and blending step, resulting in concrete of improved uniformity and greater density. In turn, this produces high compressive strength and increased durability. Various placement defects can be reduced or pre¬vented by pumping. The steady and even flow of the concrete minimizes the form distortion and delays caused by vibration problems that are common to fast dumping of the concrete mixes. Segregation, planes of weakness, bleeding, and surface faults are diminished considerably. Perhaps the greatest advantages of concrete pump¬ing are the distances and volumes that can be handled. Depending upon the equipment used, pumping rates of from 8 to 115 m&apos;j/h (10 to 150 cu yd per hr) can be achieved, with a horizontal range of up to 460 m (1500 ft) and a vertical range of up to 140 m (450 ft). Theoretically, almost any concrete mixture could be pumped. However, consistency is an important consid¬eration for efficient operation. Mixes that are too wet, too dry, too hard, or poorly graded can cause difficulties that increase the costs. Similarly, mixes containing aggregate material that is over the maximum size or that is porous and highly absorptive can also result in diffi¬culties and increased costs. For the best efficiency, the mix formulation must have a well-graded sand and aggregate combination, with enough fines to provide flowability. If additional water is required for pumping, additional cement must be used to meet the design criteria of the structure. Each pump manufacturer can provide recommended mix formulations for the specific equipment furnished. Since the 1950s, many improvements have been made in pumping technology. Originally, only rigid steel pipe of 168 to 245 mm (6.625 to 9.625 in.) diam was used; today, both rigid steel pipe and flexible conduit are available in diameters of from 76 to 203 mm (3.0 to 8.0 in.). Improved pumps have been developed, and the introduction of power-coordinated booms has in¬creased the versatility of concrete pumping. The older and more conventional placement methods can no longer compete with the flexibility, efficiency, and econ¬omy of the pumping method, and continued research and development can only improve the system and expand its use throughout the mining industry. PUMPING EQUIPMENT The three major types of concrete pumping units currently available are the piston pumps, the pneumatic pumps, and the squeeze-type pumps. Table I provides a comparison of capacities, horizontal ranges, and vertical ranges for pumps of all three types. INTRODUCTION Designers of major public works projects in the past have displayed varying degrees of environmental consciousness, and tunnel designers in particular have always had to deal with certain environmental considerations - ventilation, lighting, aesthetics - as matters of primary design. Today, however, with a widening sector of the public becoming environmentally aware, tunnels are treated as elements of whole transportation systems, and are subject to increasing environmental scrutiny. The Route H-3 tunnels in Hawaii are examples of the time, care, and detail involved in a major rock tunnel project. Project Description The Route. Interstate Route H-3 is a proposed 10-mile highway crossing the Koolau Mountain Range on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, providing a direct connection between the Pearl Harbor area and the windward part of the island in the vicinity of Kaneohe. It is designed as a dual highway with provision to accommodate mass transit. As shown on Figure 1, the project includes two sets of twin bore tunnels (through the Main Koolau Range and through Red Hill), three highway sections of which two are through largely undeveloped mountain valleys (South Halawa and Moanalua), a viaduct, and three interchanges. From the Halawa Interchange to the Kaneohe Interchange, the proposed highway consists of two 3-lane roadways separated by a median where the highway is at grade. One lane of each roadway will not be constructed initially but will be landscaped and reserved for mass

I commend the authors on examining an interesting method of shaft lining and attempting to improve safety in a dangerous environment by remotely installing the shaft lining. It is important, though, to not trade off shaft lining safety for long-term mine safety by lining an intake shaft with combustible material. In many operations, the mine utilities are installed next to the lining of the intake shaft, supplying a possible ignition source if damaged or overloaded. Although the polyurethane studied in the paper is of relatively high density, no mention is made of the flame retardency of the samples. When exposed to heat, small amounts of polyure¬thane will melt and bum but are extinguished when the heat source is removed. If large surface areas of combustible polyurethane - a tunnel or mine shaft - are exposed to ignition heat sources that are not removed or extinguished early, an uncontrollable, fuel rich fire may result with high carbon monoxide levels, low oxygen concentrations, and greatly increased burning rates that can have devastating effects on the ventilation system and miners&apos; safety.

This paper describes the scientific data acquisition, data interpretation, and sophisticated 3-dimensional modeling processes of an ongoing gas well stability research program by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Results from the NIOSH field instrumentation programs and the parallel 3-dimensional numerical modeling programs indicate that overburden depth, overburden geology, surface topographic relief, strata dip of the coal measure rocks, and casing cementing alternatives are the dominant factors affecting longwall-induced subsurface deformations and gas well casing stresses. Topographic relief could produce localized longwall-induced deformations if weak-to-strong rock interfaces are present near the bottom of stream valleys. Strata dip has significant impact on longwall-induced subsurface deformations. Cementing alternatives are found to have significant impacts on longwall-induced deformations and gas well casing stresses.

"IntroductionTungsten carbide is a valuable material used in a variety of different applications, including the manufacturing of cutting tools, bearings and as a cost-efficient alternative to industrial diamonds. Both the high hardness value (Mohs 9) and scratch resistance of this material make it a valuable commodity for use in the mining industry.Usually, the production of tungsten carbide is a multistep process involving one or more of the following unit operations: hydrometallurgical digestion, solution purification, crystallization (as ammonium paratungstate), calcination, hydrogen reduction and carbon synthesis. The proposed three-step process eliminates three of these steps (crystallization, calcination and hydrogen reduction) by implementing a combination of hydro/pyrometallurgical techniques. These include alkaline pressure leaching, carbon adsorption and carburization roasting. By eliminating some of the intermediate processing steps, there is potential to reduce energy consumption and decrease overall operating costs.Methods and resultsInitially, alkaline pressure leaching with sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) was employed to selectively leach tungsten, as tungstate (WO4 2-), from an industrial Scheelite (CaWO4) flotation concentrate. Experimental variables included lixiviant (Na2CO3) concentration, temperature and residence time. Experimental constants, based on previous work, were percent solids at 13 wt% and agitation at 400 rpm (Queneau and Strathmore, 1969). Leaching results showed it was possible to extract 97% of the tungsten present. The most favorable conditions for leaching were determined: 2M Na2CO3, temperature of 180° C and a residence time of 30 minutes."

From 1999 through 2008, groundfall events resulted in 75 fatalities, 5,941 injuries and 13,774 noninjury roof falls in U.S. underground coal mines, according to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). A comprehensive analysis of these events was conducted to better understand where and why these incidents occurred. The first segment of the study used the MSHA database to evaluate groundfall injury rate trends related to mining method, year, locality, seam thickness, mine size, coalbeds and seasonal effects. In the past decade, roof fall injury rates have dropped 50%, but rib fall injury rates have remained constant. Room-and-pillar mines had a roof fall injury rate that was nearly 2.5 times the longwall rate. High groundfall rates occurred in the Illinois Basin, a finding that correlates with other studies that have shown that roof rock in the Illinois Basin is weaker than that in the central Appalachian coalfields. Finally, noninjury roof fall rates in the eastern and central United States were found to be 50% higher from July through September, possibly because of the changes in humidity levels that may cause shale mine roofs to deteriorate. The second segment of the study evaluated the root causes of failure by reviewing all MSHA groundfall fatality reports for 1999-2008. Pillar recovery was the leading cause of groundfall fatalities (19%), followed by rib falls, roof skin falls and traveling under unsupported roof (16% each). Defining prominent ground control incident trends and hazards will identify areas where additional study is needed and where innovative solutions need to be developed to reduce these severe occupational hazards.

One of the core tenets of Sustainable Development is transparency and information sharing, i.e., government and corporate reporting. Governments report on issues within their sphere of responsibility to the degree that their constituents demand that they do so. Firms undertake reporting for two reasons: they are required to do so by law, and doing so makes good business sense. In recent years, stakeholders have come to see themselves as having a right to information about government actions and business operations that have the potential to affect their lives, health, community and environment. As a result, disparate groups, including industry associations, non-profit groups, academics, and individual firms, attempted to lay out what governments and firms should report. There are many types of sustainability reporting. In this paper we focus on three of them that both governments and firms utilize. We discuss the benefits of each. We argue that while the goal of complete and perfect data is not achievable or feasible, sustainability reporting of all three types is necessary to ensure that sound public and private decisions are made.
