At the last Comminution Symposium a challenge (Meloy and Williams, 1992) was issued to "predict the typical straight-line, self similar" tumbling mill product size distributions using a population balance model (PBM). Implicit in this challenge is the assumption that the PBM is inadequate for predicting real world grinding performance. This response is presented in three parts: I. Theoretical analysis of the general PBM and its appropriateness for comminution system modeling. II. Examination of the accuracy of prediction of real world milling behavior using linear and nonlinear PBMs. III. Evidence from recent microscale comminution research. This paper concludes with recommendations concerning future research which will: 1. further elucidate mechanisms of particle destruction and creation as well as attrition and 2. increase the accuracy of model predictions in highly nonlinear situations

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research on the application of expert sys tens technology to mining equipment diagnostics and predictive maintenance, to increase mining productivity and efficiency. One of the greatest hindrances to mining productivity is the breakdown of equipment, causing lengthy and costly delays. A diagnostic maintenance expert system (DIMES) is being developed for the hydraulic system of a continuous coal mining machine. Through the use of such a system, the frequency of equipment failures and repair time should be significantly reduced. This paper describes the application domain, the functional requirements, and the problem approach for DIMES, the design and implement at i on of the knowledge- based system, the sensor work involved with the project, and the future plans for the continued development of this and other expert systems.

Discussion by D.G. Krige I read the paper "The jackknife approach" with interest. There appears to be a widespread misunderstanding of the kriging variance as a measure of the error variance of the kriged grade estimate of an ore block. Virtually all mineral deposits display skew frequency distributions and are subject to the well-known proportional effect. Thus, it is usual to find in an ore body, when subdivided a really into subpopulations, that the variances of the grades (or the total sills of the variograms) for the subpopulations will be correlated with the corresponding mean grades (usually linearly with the squares of the mean grades). Thus, the variogram will be station. When this feature is evident, the relative variograms for the subpopulations (i.e., with variogram values divided by the relevant mean squared) will be similar, or they could even be accepted at an averaged model for the whole ore body with stationarity. Using this approach, the kriging variance will reflect the relative error variance that is to be multiplied by the kriged block grade estimate squared to yield the usual kriging variance for purposes of confidential limits. The objection that the kriging variance does not take into account the local grades used for a block valuation then falls away. In the example given by the authors, the global mean grade is not recorded. But the global variance, taken at the value of the total sill, is 0.005, whereas the variance of the 11 values used in the example is 0.000152. The two variances differ by a factor of nearly six. If the relative variogram approach is applicable in this case, the need for a jackknife technique will fall away. Also note that, for skew distributions, the confidence limits for ore-block estimates will be skew as well, and symmetrical normal limits will not apply. RepIy by G.S. Adisoma and M.G. Hester There are a few interesting ways to utilize the block-by-block kriging variance that the authors have encountered. One of them is to classify a particular block into a proven-probable reserve or a possible-resource category, using a somewhat subjectively determined kriging variance value. Here, the kriging variance still represents the drilling density, i.e., data configuration more than the data values. Professor Krige mentions another ingenious approach through the use of relative variograms. This will yield a block kriging variance that takes into account local (block) grade, as he correctly points out, for purposes of confidence limits. However, we are more interested in quantifying the uncertainties associated with grade estimation in a much larger scale than a block. e.g., for a mining phase or the minable reserve. The jackknife, through the block kriging shortcut, provides a simple solution to obtain a single estimation variance for a general shape. The authors' main reference discusses different ways to handle skewed distributions typical in mineral resource estimation, e.g., the weighted jackknife approach or data transformation. Also, as with any technique, we can always improve our estimate by subdividing into smaller populations that are geologically and statistically separate domains. As we have mentioned; the jackknife is but a tool in our collection of tools to solve estimation problems. The jackknife's appeals are its simplicity and versatility. It is handy when no other solution is available, or when the available solution is not practical. It is used with other methods, not to replace them altogether. ?

The reliability and comparability of LCA results crucially depends on the quality of LCI data, that is defined by specific normative requirements. In parallel the GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) provides a set of guidance documents for enhancing the quality, rigor, and utility of SD reporting with specific reporting principles that address similar issues on a company level comparable to LCI data quality requirements on the process level. In order to assess the general suitability of the fundamental reporting principles for LCI data quality purposes selected reports from mining and minerals (M&M) sector are assessed within a detailed analysis."

A decanter centrifuge of novel design was developed for the dewatering of fine-solids slurries having micrometer-range particles that form pastelike, flowable, hard-to-dewater cakes. The design combines a compound beach with a cake flow control structure that allows expressed liquid, from the cake in the dry beach region to be returned to the liquid pool while maintaining a high-solids throughput. To provide optimal performance with various operating parameters (i.e., feed rate, centrifugal gravity, pool, differential speed, concentration of feed solids and slurry type), the cake flow control is adjustable. The second part of the beach is preferably at a zero angle. Tests showed that the new design allows increases in solids dryness and solids throughput. Machine learning in the form of artificial neural networks was applied to investigate whether specimen load evolution can be predicted as a function of acoustic emission (AE) signals in the case of three-point bending (TPB) marble specimens instrumented with piezoelectric sensors. The ultimate objective of this study is to develop a model that can quantify rock behavior under loading that can lead to rock-failure prediction in underground structures subjected to bending, such as roof failure in development or production openings.

Milling has traditionally been considered more art than science. In the last 10 years, significant improvements in process equipment have been made and we are finally taking significant steps toward approaching grinding as a science. Two machines have been at the center of this development. These are the roll press and the high efficiency separator. The former can be considered as a new technology or adaptation of existing i.e. roller mill. The latter is clearly an improvement of existing technology. Other machines have been introduced to a lesser degree and later. Among these are the CKP and Horomill. The purpose of this paper is to provide an over- view of the currently available modifications for operating systems and options for new milling circuits with some comments on their application and history.

Multivalent ions are shown to activate the flotation of colemanite in the presence of sodium dodecylsulfate (NaDDS). Floatation recoveries versus barium ion concentrations exhibit three distinct regions of floatability. Adsorption, zeta potential and solubility mesurements under comparable conditions reveal that Region I is characterized by the uptake of Me2+ ions followed by electrostatic attraction of sulfate ions onto the oppositely charged surface. The improvement observed in flotation recoveries in Regions II and III is ascribed to surface and bulk precipitation of metal dodecyl sulfate onto colemanite, respectively. While the most soluble BaDDS ions yield the highest activation, the least soluble MgDDS achieve the lowest activation. It is postulated that metal ions depending on their solubility products with DDS are capable of activating the boron minerals.

Baltimore Region Rapid Transit System project final design began in 1973. The Section A of the planned Phase I is scheduled to go into revenue service in late 1982. The subway line structures include earth tunnels, rock tunnels and cut-and-cover structures. Final designs were performed by both the DMJM/KE staff and by outside subconsultants. This paper deals with Section A of the program. (Fig. 1.) The overall program cost for Section A is estimated to be $721 million. The cost for construction and owner furnished equipment is estimated to be $600 million, including contingency and escalation to time of construction. The remaining amounts are for right-of-way, design, construction management and agency (MTA) costs. The Section A line structures, including station lengths, are divided as shown in Table 1. [ ]

We at Colowyo would like to thank you for the opportunity to share with the Society of Mining Engineers of A.I.M.E. the progress of reclamation at Colowyo Coal Company's multiple seam open pit coal mine which is a general partnership of W.R. Grace and Co., and the Hanna Mining Co. First, a brief history of Colowyo Coal Company (Colowyo). The Colowyo operation is located approximately 28 miles southwest of Craig, Colorado, which is in the northwest corner of the state. The Colowyo operation produces coal from a Federal Coal Lease, a portion of which has experienced previous coal mining by underground methods. The underground coal mines were known as the Red Wing Mine and The Streeter Mine, and supplied coal to numerous locations in the Rocky Mountain region.

Cameco Corp. operates uranium mills and tailings management facilities at its Key Lake and Rabbit Lake operations in Northern Saskatchewan, Canada. Development at both mine sites began in the 1970s, with initial tailings deposition occurring within above-ground impoundments, which was common for these facilities at the time. As open pits became available at each site, and mining continued at other orebodies in the area, tailings management shifted to in-pit facilities to meet stakeholder expectations and improve the long-term security and environmental performance of tailings management at these facilities. The in-pit facility at Rabbit Lake (receiving tailings since 1984; Fig. 1), was one of the first (if not the first) engineered in-pit tailings facilities in the world and adopted a full pervious surround design concept with subaerial deposition. Under this concept, permeable sand and coarse rock are placed at the base of the pit, around its perimeter, as well as overlying the tailings at closure to promote regional groundwater flow bypassing the lower-permeability tailings. In contrast, at Key Lake, the in-pit facility (receiving tailings since 1996) adopted a partial pervious surround design concept. Under this concept, permeable materials were again placed at the base of the pit, and partway up the side walls; although for the upper portion of the tailings, the material is placed directly against the natural geologic materials. In the Key Lake case, the natural geologic environment provided the required bypassing of the tailings deposit to achieve the desired environmental performance while the base drain again facilitated pumping during operations to achieve consolidation objectives (Fig. 2). In both the initial design of the facilities, and through more than several decades of operation, it is clear that although in-pit tailings facilities provide common benefits with respect to long-term geotechnical stability, it is critical that their design approach take into consideration site-specific conditions

Collophane, cryptocrystalline fluorapatite, is examined as a substrate for plant water and wastewater remediation. The attenuation of Fe3+, Cr3+, Fe2+, Cd2+, Hg2+ and Pb2+ is presented as a function of metal ion concentration, amount of collophane, initial pH and conditioning time. TCLP results for Pb2+ contaminated collophane are presented. Mechanisms of adsorption for divalent and trivalent species are suggested. Understanding constraints within the raw battery material supply chain is essential for making informed decisions that will ensure the battery industry’s future success. The primary limiting factor for long-term mass production of batteries is mineral extraction constraints. These constraints are highlighted in a first fill analysis which showed significant risks if lithium-ion batteries are used to fully support vehicle electrification and intermittent energy storage. Nickel, lithium, cobalt and graphite reserves risk 100 percent depletion with significant consumption of known resources. Furthermore, more than 700 new critical mineral mines will need to be developed to meet the required production rates for decarbonization by 2050. Demand for critical minerals will outpace mine development timelines even as improvements are made to battery energy density and compositions. Governments and the private sector need to align themselves on decarbonization goals to establish cooperative agreements on the critical mineral supply chain by reducing the barriers to entry and increasing exploration efforts. Additional measures must also be taken to reduce the demand for critical minerals. Policy such as incentivizing public transportation and biking infrastructure can be exploited to drastically reduce the mineral demand placed on the mining industry.

The Ipueira III chrome mine is located in the northeastern part of the state of Bahia, Brazil. Extraction is actually at depths less than 300 m, but below level 200 serious environmental problems have been encountered with respect to control of air quality, toxic gas, dust and thermal comfort. At the request of the mining company the University of São Paulo started a research program to investigate the origin and occurrence of the critical problems and to propose solutions. A ventilation survey was carried out first which revealed the existence of several air leakages and short circuits that contributed to substantial reductions in the air supply to some of the main producing levels. Computer simulation of the ventilation network showed that extending the intake air shaft to deeper levels was the most convenient and economic solution to improve the air quality. The ventilation survey was followed by a mapping of the toxic gas emissions and thermal comfort levels in several parts of the mine. The air quality conditions were evaluated as a function of gas emission and heat generation associated with production and development activities. The results show that environmental conditions are already critical in most of the working levels and neither an increase in production nor deepening of the mine can be taken up without substantial changes in the ventilation system. INTRODUCTION Environmental concern is growing in Brazil and several underground mines are starting environmental engineering programs. The LACASEMIN - Laboratory of Environmental Control and Mine Safety of the Mining Engineering Department of the University of São Paulo - was contacted by Mineração Vale do Jacurici to start a research program for investigating the origin and occurrence of environmental problems that existed in the Ipueira III chrome mine. This research program involved field measurements of air quantities with gas levels monitoring, evaluation of heat stress parameters, determination of adequate flow patterns through computer simulations and training of mine technical staff. This paper presents the results of the first 4 months of this research program. The Ipueira III mine is located in the northeastern part of the state of Bahia, near the city of Senhor do Bonfim at about 400 km inland from the state capital city of Salvador. Chromite mineralization is quite widespread in this area and often associated with mafic and ultramafic rocks which cut across regional gneisses and migmatites. ROM production in 1992 varied between 25,000 to 40,000 tons per month, 25% being of lump type (38% of Cr2O3) and 75% being of fines. Lump is manually separated and fines are concentrated in a nearby plant. All the production goes directly to the group processing steel plants near Salvador. The Ipueira III mine is currently under some adverse economic situation because of imports from South Africa and Russia, which have better grades and sometimes a lower content of phosphorous. Consequently there has been little progress in the development of new mines and even in those currently under operation the extraction is becoming more difficult due to the lack of investment in improving mining methods and ventilation systems. In spite of such difficulties the company has backed up studies for initiating an environmental engineering investigation of the Ipueira III mine. MINING METHODS AND VENTILATION SCHEMES The mining methods adopted have changed as a function of extraction depth, rock mass strength and ore body geometry. In subterranean mining operations, access to communication networks deep underground is critical for transporting data, voice and video, and other supporting applications that are essential for efficient and safe operations. Whether accessing sophisticated ERP or maintenance management systems, engaging in fleet management, video surveillance, or access control, or protecting miners with wireless locator systems, these networks serve as a literal lifeline between workers deep within mines and surface operations. For this, mining networks require more than permanently installed network cabling, it also requires unique deployable systems designed for quick installation, extension and even relocation as the active mine site area moves, or equipment is moved in and out.

The current situation of the global mining economy is increasingly focused on the utilization of materials previously discarded in the mining process. The waste from the past, through new processing routes, is gaining new contours for use as high-value-added products. The strategic mine planning process has consequently had to adapt to the new economic reality. In standard scenarios, the focus was primarily on mine sequencing aimed at the highest economic return, with all infrastructure allocated as a necessity of mining. This work aims, in strategic planning, to configure and select the best composition of mining structures. The entire Mine-Plant-Waste-Tailings-Products chain will be considered as a factor in the sequencing of a multimine complex, to achieve the most sustainable utilization of the current mines’ waste. The sequencing is based on concurrent flows of process configurations and capacities, structure sharing, and flexibility of feed types. These factors will guide the sequencing, which will be constrained by components such as waste and tailings disposal rates, lithology feed relationships, and especially product composition through market specifications, all while respecting product shipping capacities.

A new detailed geologic map in scale 1:5,000 was combined with the results of a time lapse geophysical survey using seismic and electrical methods. A fault system in the N-NE direction possibly favors the saltwater intrusion.

In the design and specification of a ventilation system for an underground mine, it is necessary to make reasonably accurate estimates of the pressure losses in the various airways of the mine. These estimates can be made with little difficulty for open airways with simple geometric cross-sections, such as those cut by continuous miners or tunnel-boring machines. The situation is much different on a longwall face, where the airway's complex geometric cross-section and the presence in the airway of obstructing equipment having a variety of shapes make it difficult, if not impossible, to estimate pressure loss using traditional methods of calculation. Peru has become an established mining country. The industry and industry-related businesses account for a significant amount of the country´s revenue, on state and local levels. But like other countries with thriving mining industries, Peru has seen its mining industry revenues fall off in recent years due to a lackluster global economy. And the mining industry in Peru must also deal with increasing concerns about mining?s environmental impacts, local community and other social issues, as well as a regulatory environment that has placed more restrictions on what miners can do. That said, the Peruvian government is beginning to realize how important mining and natural resource development is to building the nation?s economy, improving its infrastructure and lifting its population out of poverty. The government support was evident during the Perumin 2013 mining convention, held in September in Arequipa. In addition to Peru?s President Ollanta Humala speaking at the closing ceremony, the country?s ministers of Energy and Mines, and Economy and Finance participated in the event, as well as numerous other federal and state authorities. Perumin is put on by the Instituto de Ingenieros de Minas del Peru (IIMP, or Peruvian Institute of Mine Engineers). The 31st edition of the convention, billed as the ?world?s largest mining convention? by the IIMP, this event was led by Abraham Chahuan CEO of Antamina and Romulo Mucho (SME member) as president of IIMP, attracted about 118,000 participants from more than 48 countries. This was more than the anticipated 75,000 attendance and well past the 51,000 people who attended the 2011 convention. The last edition of PERUMIN was led by the CEO of Compañía Minera Antamina, Abraham Chahuan and Rómulo Mucho (SME member) and representative of the IIMP. The event attracted more than 1,000 journalists from all over the world, the IIMP said. A total of 2,213 booths from equipment and machinery supplying companies from the five continents were present at the Mining Technology Exhibition (Extemin), including companies from the United States, Canada, China, South Africa, Germany, Australia, Brazil and Chile, among others. The convention has grown so large in recent years, that the IIMP shifted its location from Tecsup vocational school in Arequipa to the Cerro Juli Convention Center. The venue is 116 percent larger than Tecsup, the IIMP reported, covering about 20 ha (40 acres). It was reported by Latinomineria magazine that about 10 million Peruvian soles were invested in the new venue to create a world-class events center. It was also estimated that the event generated more than 234 million soles to Arequipa?s economy.
