Miners really are an optimistic bunch. Even with the dark clouds hanging over the global industry, mining professionals still turn out in droves at industry conferences. In February, more than 7,200 professionals attended SME?s Annual Meeting in Denver, CO, a record. And the following week, more than 30,000 people converged on Toronto, ON, Canada for the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) meeting. For many small and junior mining and exploration companies the PDAC conference is a place to find potential investors in their projects. The Investors Exchange attracts several hundred companies, each showing off their properties to the many money types who wander the hall during the four-day conference.

"Carbonic acid prepared on-site from carbon dioxide gas is widely used in water treatment and increasingly in some industrial applications. It has not seen extensive use in mineral processing but is an attractive alternative to sulphuric acid for pH control, with the need to counteract high pH levels caused by cemented backfill of particular interest. The fundamental chemistry of carbonate solutions as applied to flotation and flocculation circuits is described as well as plant-scale application. A project to introduce use of carbon dioxide for pH control at the Hecla Greens Creek lead-zinc-silver-gold operation is planned to begin operation in the first half of 2015. INTRODUCTION Flotation pH Control and Backfill Most sulphide flotation circuits are run at pH values ranging from slightly acid to strongly basic, with slightly basic pH the most common. Lead sulphide circuits are typically run at values from 7.5 to 9, with zinc circuits running at higher values of 9.5 to 10.5. This has been the case with ores that produce a natural pH in the circumneutral range, so that the pH needs to be raised. Although lime [Ca(OH)2] is the cheapest reagent in use to raise pH, soda ash (Na2CO3) or caustic soda (NaOH) are also employed where sodium ions in solution are preferred to dissolved calcium, or, in the case of soda ash, the presence of carbonate is desired. The use of soda ash for pH control in lead circuits has been widely recommended for many decades (1). The situation is necessarily different at operations where cemented backfill is used in underground mines (2). Backfill, whether emplaced as rammed paste or pumped slurry, is composed of mill tailings mixed with around 10% Portland or similar cement. When later mining occurs near or adjacent to previously backfilled areas, a considerable amount of old backfill is inevitably mixed with new ore and shipped to the mill. Depending on orebody geometry, mining methods etc., the amount of backfill in mill feed can easily approach 20%, with periods of higher content not unheard of. The presence of so much backfill, with its high cement content, produces results largely indistinguishable from adding a large amount of lime to run-of-mine feed: mill pH in the grinding circuits can range above 11 and high concentrations of calcium ions are present. The need to raise pH disappears; the problem becomes to lower it."

One of the most dramatic innovations in the materials handling industry has been the development of stacker cranes and automated material handling systems. The stacker crane with its many capabilities and the development of reliable industrial automation controls have combined to produce dramatic achievements in an area once characterized by inefficiency lack of management attention, and capital investment. In many areas of application however, stacker cranes and high rise storage systems have been designed and installed with insufficient thought given to their integration into the overall operations of the plant or distribution facility. This paper will look at some new and interesting breakthroughs in the integration of stacker cranes and high rise storage systems into the total manufacturing plant system. In this paper we will refer to both bridge type stacker cranes and aisle stackers. The bridge type stacker crane was developed first and was initially developed with forks or other handling devices hoisted up and down a rigid or telescopic mast. This mast system was suspended from a trolley mounted on an overhead crane bridge. Today, the primary application of the bridge type stacker is in warehousing systems for handling basic metal products such as coils, bars, sheets and plates. There is no question that the bridge type stacker has achieved notable results in storage and handling of these commodities. However, a new area for stacker crane application has been developing which in many cases over-shadows the accomplishments in the storage area. This is the application of the bridge stacker as an integral part of the manufacturing processes, or in other terms the production applications of stacker cranes. The stacker crane has a number of attributes which makes these applications very important. First, the crane bridge provides the stable platform for the mounting of machinery which can accommodate the hoisting and lateral movement of large capacity loads. Today stacker cranes are being built with capacities of up to 30 - 40 tons. The bridge cranes can easily accomplish accommodation Of these large tonnages. Secondly, the mast system provides a stable platform for the mounting of a wide variety of manipulating devices which can be used for the placement of material into manufacturing processes, the extraction of this material from these processes, and movement to other points in the process area. These attributes combined with excellent operator control and safety have led to development of the stacker crane as a production tool.

This is a shortened version of the paper ?The Methane-Air Explosion Hazard Within Coal Mine Gobs published in the 2013 volume of SME Transactions (Brune, 2013). This paper analyzes the explosion hazard resulting from the formation of methane-air mixtures in the mined-out gobs of underground longwall coal mines. Evidence from numerous mine explosions suggests that explosive methane zones can form within longwall gobs. Explosions and fires resulting from these methane accumulations have led to severe and fatal injuries to the miners, including the explosion of the Upper Big Branch mine in West Virginia, where 29 miners lost their lives. The paper also reviews current research on numerical modeling of gas flows in longwall gobs and outlines how targeted injection of nitrogen into gobs can effectively reduce the volume of such explosive methane zones. The paper concludes that comprehensive monitoring of gas compositions along the accessible fringes of the gobs along with inertization, improved ventilation schemes and further research are necessary to control this explosion hazard and make mining operations safe.

Two rare evaporite minerals, nahcolite (NaHC03) and trona (Na2C03?NaHC03?2H20), are both widely used in the production of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) The largest natural carbonate deposits (trona) are in Wyoming, USA, the second largest deposits are in Turkey, in a lacustrine basin (Beypazari) where nahcolite and trona are located within the Miocene Hirka Formation. The Hirka Formation is mainly composed of bituminous shale, claystone, marlstone, tuffltuffite, and dolomitic limestones. Although numerous trona beds are interbedded within the above mentioned sedimentary units, there are only two beds of trona that are of economic interest. The lower part of the lower trona bed is rich in double carbonates such as pirrsonite (NA2C03? CaC03?2H20) and gaylussite (Na2C03?CaC03?5H20), indicating a change in Ca/Na ratio in the solutions which are responsible for the formation of soda occurrences. In contrast, the upper part of the upper trona bed is rich in nahcolite. This minerological pattern has been found in every drill- hole in the basin. While both trona beds average up to 10 m (33 ft) thick, the average thickness of nahcolite is approximately 0.5 m (1.6 ft). Also, thin section studies show that many fibrous and lath-like trona crystals contain small radial nahcolite crystals; all of them are euhedral and equi-dimensional. Geochemical studies of major, minor, and trace element contents also support this coexistence. Macroscopic and microscopic observations reveal that the nahcolites principally were formed as a result of an incongruent dissolution process of trona. In conclusion, the presence of nahcolite in the Beypazari basin is due to the dissolution process of trona, particularly during the last stage of evaporation, as a result of fresh water entering the basin. During that time, an increase in the HC03/ C03 ratio resulted in nahcolite-trona phase transitions.

Concrete-infused cloth is used in several civil and mining surface applications whose circumstances are similar to some of those in underground mining. A feature of this material is that it cannot be overhydrated. In underground conditions, however, the excess supply of water to the cloth for hydration could lead to muddy and potentially unsafe working conditions, as well as resource wastage by supplying more water to the construction site than is needed. The objective of this study is to verify the water-to-cloth ratio and study the effect of hydration level on the strength of the Concrete Cloth product. We found that the strength increases with increased hydration up to a 1:2 water-to-cloth ratio by weight, after which the strength holds steady regardless of additional hydration. This confirms the 1:2 water-tocloth ratio by weight for hydration and confirms that strength is retained even if the cloth is excessively hydrated.

"Construction activities account for a large share of the global Greenhouse Gas emission. In the past 10 years, project decision-makers and researchers have been paying more attention to the carbon emission of tunnel projects. In this paper we study the carbon emission calculation in shield tunneling. The objective of this paper is to: (1) analyze the complex variables which affect the total emission of shield tunneling; (2) develop and illustrate a new data-mining-based method to estimate the carbon emission in the construction phase; (3) assess the emission prediction reliability of a data-mining-based method—the Randomforst model, with R programming language. This study is based on a large-diameter shield tunnel built in Shanghai, China, and shows that a reliable predictive performance can be achieved with this new data-mining-based method. INTRODUCTION Climate change caused by the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission has been a hot topic in recent 20 years. Both governments and non-government-organizations are trying its best to control the climate change. Since the 1990s, the general consensus is that carbon emission reduction and carbon sinking (the work of capturing the emitted carbon) are two ways of mitigating the global warming effect, with the former being more exercisable. The challenge posed by global warming also motivates the project decision-makers to take measures to reduce the GHG emission. The 5th Assessment & Report on Climate Change (published by IPCC, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) suggests that building industry contributes to 5% of the total direct emission. The building industry has shown more awareness of the impact of GHG emissions with construction activities. Shield tunnels act as an important component of the infrastructure system, and have been the dominant way of utilizing the underground space, as well as a competitive alternative to passageway underneath rivers. To study the environmental effects of shield tunneling, there is a need to quantify the carbon emission of shield tunnel construction."

INTRODUCTION In a discussion of South American exploration, it is difficult to know how much area to cover, as there has been such intense exploration for many years in all of the South American countries. Therefore, I have decided to discuss only Argentina, Bolivia and Peru in this paper, since I am most familiar with these three countries. This familiarity has been gained during my last 12 years of nearly continual exploration and mine development. Furthermore, these three countries form a contiguous block straddling the Andes Mountain chain for 2,200 miles in length N-S. Although Chile is part of this block, I excluded that country because it has had the longest recent history in South American exploration, and it is now in a mature stage where new important mines are being placed in production every year. Exploration must progress a lot for the other three countries to attain the stature of Chile. However, major exploration successes such as Yavacocha and Pieriva in Peru, Kori Khollu in Bolivia and Bajo Alumbrera, Agua Rica and Cerro Vanguardia in Argentina certainly indicates that these countries are rapidly accelerating in exploration successes and the resulting new mine developments. Also, by concentrating on three countries, I have avoided making this paper too lengthy. This paper will cover activities of both junior and senior mining companies, both of whom are making significant contributions to exploration. The junior companies often make the initial discovery, develop it further and then bring in a major company when large capital is required. Since most exploration is for gold and copper or combinations of these, most descriptions will cover these types. However, there are significant new exploration successes for zinc and for silver-lead-zinc, and they will be covered, as well. After descriptions of the various properties, there is included a discussion of the governmental policies of Argentina, Bolivia and Peru, as to how they are affecting exploration activities and budgets. Some of these problems could have a major negative affect on the future exploration plans of many companies. I have intended to cover what I think are significant exploration developments in each country, and if a company project is omitted, there was no intention to slight anyone. Introduction In response to industry needs and requests, Joy Mining Machinery is aggressively evolving a "game changing" system of underground development mining machinery. This entry-development system (EDS) project is concentrated on providing clean, protected and ergonomic operator areas and a quantum leap in productivity. To meet these goals, a virtually continuous and automated mining system is needed. Operators must be able to efficiently and ergonomically perform required functions from a protected environment. Health-related issues, such as respirable dust and noise, must also be addressed. A new concept system of integrated face equipment, from the continuous miner to and including advancing the section belt and services, is needed. Phase I of the project was aimed at developing the bolting technology required. Through acquisition of Cram Australia and joint development efforts with Canyon Fuel Co., Joy now has this capability. The test platform, known as the Joy Multibolter, has successfully completed its trials at Canyon Fuel's SUFCo Mine (Fig. 1). These tests validated the bolting technology and operator protection and ergonomic issues. Phase II includes the development and testing of an integrated mining machine (IMM) capable of advancing a heading 1.5 m (5 ft) while simultaneously cutting a fullface width (single pass) and installing a complete bolt pattern. The IMM, unveiled at MINExpo 2000, incorporates the bolting technology of the Multibolter with automated full-face cutting. This machine was designed to meet Joy's stringent health, operator protection and 300m/d (1,000-ft/d) productivity goals. Phases III through V will include development of processes and integrated haulage, ventilation, power, material handling and section services advancing equipment. Processes and equipment developed will be designed for seamless integration into a complete entry development system. The focus of this paper is the new continuous miner (IMM) development, proposed testing and expectations for the EDS. The IMM is scheduled for commissioning and trials beginning in April 2001 at the SUFCo Mine. SUFCo Mine Canyon Fuel Co. is jointly owned by Arch Western Resources and the Itochu Corp. of Japan. It owns and operates three coal mines in Utah: the SUFCo Mine in Sevier County, the Skyline Mine in Carbon and Emery Counties and the Dougout Canyon Mine in Carbon County. Incorporating state-of-the-art-mining technology and advanced mine management practices, the SUFCo Mine is one of the most efficient underground coal mines in the world. The SUFCo Mine is located approximately 50-km (30 miles) northeast of Salina, UT, in the Wasatch Plateau portion of the Uinta coal basin. The mine property consists of 9,900 hm2 (24,470 acres) with approximately 118 Mt (130 million st) of recoverable reserves. Public utilities and industrial concerns purchase approximately 95% of the coal mined at SUFCo through short- or long-term contracts. Coal reserves are extracted by longwall mining, and the panels are developed using continuous miners. The longwall face at SUFCo Mine is 283-m (930-ft) wide, and the seam height ranges from 2.4 to 4 m (8 to 13 ft). The two development sections are in full operation using Joy 12CM12 continuous miners. Two super longwall panels, under development in the northeast portion of the lease block, are 4,270-m (14,000-ft) long with a 283-m (930-ft) wide longwall face. The use of ceramic-in-rubber pulley lagging on bulk material belt conveyors is increasing. Many of the applications have been on pulleys originally installed with rubber lagging. There is a consensus that the fiction characteristics of the ceramic material are significantly better but the factors quoted vary, possibly because the more complex traction mechanism of the dimpled ceramic elements on the belt is not well understood. In this paper we will report and evaluate field data from a number of field installations to provide a study of actual friction characteristics in successful applications for those who desire reliable data for using ceramic-in-rubber lagging in new conveyor designs.

Highly stressed excavations in hard brittle rock may fail by self-initiated, triggered or dynamically loaded strainbursts (Moss and Kaiser 2021). The low-frequency part of seismic radiation associated with strainbursts is described by a crush-type seismic source mechanism with a significant negative (implosive) isotropic component and a ‘pancake-shape’ CLVD deviatoric component. The seismic source is co-located with the excavation damage site. For such strainbursts, the ejection velocity is primarily related to the depth of strainbursting, the rock mass bulking characteristics, the duration of the bulking process, and the effectiveness of the support system. For dynamically loaded strainbursts, the displacement and energy demand may be augmented by the impact of the stress wave from a distant seismic event. This article describes the failure process and factors contributing to rock deformation and energy demands for support design. Case examples are used to demonstrate the dependence of rock displacements, rock ejection and energy demand on the factors described above. A seismic source model is proposed to assess the depth of strainbursting and the duration of the related bulking process by using seismic monitoring data. The implications for support design are briefly discussed.

A study was conducted to examine the potential of diesel emissions control strategies based on retrofitting existing power packages with exhaust aftertreatment devices and repowering with advanced power packages. The retrofit systems, a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF), were evaluated individually using a US EPA tier 2 (ter 2) engine operated under four steady-state conditions and one transient cycle. The DOC effectively curtailed emissions of CO, and to some extent organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and aerosol number concentration. The DPF system offered substantially higher reductions in OC and EC mass and aerosol number concentrations. Both, the DOC and DPF achieved reductions in the aforementioned emissions without adversely affecting emissions of NO2 and nano-sized aerosols. The strategy of repowering with an advanced system was examined using a US EPA tier 4 final (tier 4f) engine equipped with a cooled exhaust gas recirculation system and diesel exhaust fluid-based selective catalytic reduction system, but not with a DPF system. The tier 4f engine contributed substantially less than the tier 2 engine to the EC and OC mass, aerosol number, and CO, NO, and NO2 concentrations. The tier 4f engine was very effective in reducing aerosol mass, NO, and NO2 concentrations, but it was not equally effective in reducing aerosol number concentrations. The implementation of viable exhaust after treatment systems and advanced diesel power packages could be instrumental to the underground mining industry to secure a clean, economical, and dependable source of power for mobile equipment.

A new technology for ironmaking based on direct gaseous reduction of iron ore concentrate is under development. The process is based on the flash reduction of the concentrate particles in a gaseous reducing agent, such as hydrogen, natural gas, a reducing gas generated by partial combustion of coal, or a combination thereof. This technology is expected to drastically lower CO2 emission and reduce energy consumption by about 38% of the blast furnace requirements. The energy savings are possible largely due to the elimination of pelletization and cokemaking. Process design and simulation using hydrogen as the reductant for iron ore concentrate have been performed. A process flow sheet composed of a flash reactor, heat recovery system, water removal system for purifying recycled hydrogen, and all connecting streams was evaluated using the METSIM software. Ironmaking using two reactors was also designed and simulated, which could reduce the total required amount of hydrogen although it would increase the complexity of the flow sheet and operation.

It has long been understood that extended occupational exposures to respirable mine dusts can lead to chronic lung disease. In underground coal mines, coal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP) and silicosis are major concerns. While many efforts have been made with the aim of understanding the mass-based concentrations and silica contents of respirable dusts under a variety of mining conditions, little research has been completed in characterizing dust at the individual particle level (by composition, size and shape). This study employed scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray (SEM-EDX) to analyze dust samples collected from an underground coal mine in Central Appalachia. The results indicated that particle characteristics can vary widely between locations, though many trends might be explained based on knowledge of mining conditions. A continuous personal dust monitor (CPDM) was also used during the collection of some samples to determine respirable dust concentrations, which were compared against estimated concentrations based on the particle-level analysis.

In a series of Julius Kruttschnitt size-dependent breakage models, the cumulative percentage passing 1/10 of the initial size is used as a fineness indicator for scientific research and the selection of grinding equipment. However, in industrial practice, it is quite customary to use the mass percentage passing 75 μm as the indicator. In this paper, based on the energy-particle size model, quartz and calcite, two materials with distinctly different hardness, were used as test samples in a conical ball mill. At the same specific energy, the value of the cumulative percentage passing 1/10 of the initial size decreased while that of the mass percentage passing 75 μm increased with finer feed size. The experimental test values of the mass percentage passing 75 μm have a good linear relationship with the model predictions, which suggests that the particle size energy relationship of the mass percentage passing 75 μm and Ecs can be used instead of the cumulative percentage passing 1/10 of the initial size and Ecs. By building family curves, when particle size x < 300 μm, the family curve can be well fitted, and the fine particle size distribution of the whole product can be reconstructed.

"This research sought to facilitate improved stakeholder (community) analysis using discrete choice theory (DCT). The work considered 16 project attributes and four demographic factors. The discrete choice experiment was conducted in Salt Lake City, Utah to illustrate the usefulness of DCT in mining stakeholder analysis. The data was used in discrete choice modeling of individual preferences. The approach answers three important questions for enhanced stakeholder analysis: (1) What are the factors that affect individual preferences? (2) What is the effect of demographics on individual preferences? (3) What is the value of environmental and social impacts to individuals in the community? INTRODUCTION Stakeholder analysis is crucial for effective stakeholder engagement because it is important to identify and characterize stakeholders in order to effectively engage in dialogue with them. This is not only true for all stakeholders but true for characterizing the members of a particular stakeholder. The local community is usually the largest and most diverse single stakeholder group. Also, the local community is perhaps the most important stakeholder group. Thus, analysis of the local community is essential for project management. Conventional mining stakeholder analysis is a three-step process, which involves evaluating: (1) each stakeholder’s view of the project (positive, neutral, or negative); (2) how influential each stakeholder is (high, medium, or low); and (3) how they will be impacted by the project (high, medium, or low) (ICMM, 2012). The results of this evaluation are documented in a stakeholder analysis matrix (Table 1), which is used to classify the stakeholders into three groups: highly influential supporter of the project, neutral about the project, and highly influential opponent of the project. This process can be used to describe groups of stakeholders (e.g. community, non-governmental organizations, etc.) or individuals making up a particular stakeholder group (e.g. members of the local community)."

Plans are underway to extend commuter rail service underground into downtown San Francisco. The Salesforce Transit Center (STC) was completed in 2018 and will serve as a new transit hub, including a commuter rail station after two future connecting tunnel segments are completed. The northern segment, known as the Caltrain Downtown Extension (DTX), which will extend the rail line from its current terminus at 4th and King Streets to the STC, is currently in Preliminary Engineering. The southern segment, the subject of this paper, is a 1.6-mile tunnel known as the Pennsylvania Avenue Extension (PAX), which is currently in the pre-environmental planning stage, with alternative alignments under evaluation including single bore versus twin bore options. This paper discusses project challenges, including highly variable tunneling conditions in soil and rock, a congested urban project site with limited space for construction staging, alignment crossings of large existing buried infrastructure, and complicated interfaces with future and existing rail operations.

A review of the published literature on the mechanism of depression of sulfide minerals shows that a unified theory is not yet available. The various mechanisms that have been postulated include competition between depressants and collectors to adsorb at the surface sites, creation of thermodynamic conditions nonconducive for formation of a metal collector salt or formation of a hydrophilic coating on the surface. The hydrophilic coating may or matt not effect the adsorption of collectors. In yet another mechanism, the depressant nay participate directly in oxidation/reduction reactions between collectors and sulfide minerals. Examples from the literature are discussed to highlight oxidation/reduction effects in the depression of sulfide minerals.

The Rochester Mining District is located some twenty-five miles NE of Lovelock, Nevada. The District was discovered and named in the 1860&apos;s by prospectors from Rochester, New York. For a number of years, they worked Rochester Canyon, sinking shafts and inclines and making open cuts. After reaching a depth of approximately eighty feet, the miners tapped an underground channel and were driven from these workings by a strong flow of water leaving pumps in the shaft and barely escaping with their lives. With the Rochester workings no longer accessible, the miners went to the southeast and established the Relief Mining District. About 1881, gold was found in the gravel at the mouth of American Canyon, to the east of Rochester. These placers were worked until 1895, first by the Americans who reportedly took out $1 000 000, and later by the Chinese who mined the gravel with great skill. It was estimated that the Chinese took out as much as $10 000 000.

Road tunnels in recent infrastructure projects in Sydney, Australia, are designed to have a fire resistance level of either a 4-hour cellulosic fire or a 2-hour hydrocarbon fire. Where permanent ground support for tunnels consists of systematic rock bolts and relatively thin layer of shotcrete, it is important to ensure that during and after the fire event the ground support is designed/predicted not to pose risks to the tunnel occupant. The global behavior of the ground support can be predicted using finite element analysis, and its resistance is derived with consideration of the material strength degradation due to the elevated temperature.
