Long-distance movement of various materials by conveyor is becoming common; therefore, it is no surprise that conveyors are frequently found in very long tunnels. In such long tunnels, there is a continual controversy between the tunnel operator's requirement for a maximum of clear space for the conveyor and vehicles and the investor's wish to make the minimum capital investment for excavation. This analysis shows that the question becomes more pressing as the tunnel becomes longer. The result given in this paper is a straightforward method by which an economic and operational optimal tunnel width may be selected for any specified tunnel length. Detailed computational formulas are developed relating costs of construction, vehicle operation, vehicle accidents, and conveyor downtime to both tunnel width and length.

In this paper fires due to spontaneous combustion in Middle Anatolian Lignite mine (OAL) which is the first fully mechanized underground lignite mine in Turkey, are studied. Since the installation of mechanization (1986), due to spontaneous heating, four panel fires namely, A01, A02, A03 and A04 have broken out. During these fires, the concentrations of carbon monoxide, methane and the velocity of air are measured continuously by the Micro Minos Environmental monitoring system. For each fire, the environment where fire has started is examined and the possible causes of the fire are investigated. Also the precautions taken to extinguish the fire at different stages are described and the importance of the early detection of mine fire are discussed together with the limitations of the monitoring system and the practical difficulties observed during the fire.

During the past five years the use of all-hydraulic drilling equipment has increased rapidly, and we have now reached a point where the hydraulic drill has become an alternative to be seriously considered for every drilling operation. The hydraulic drills have many advantages over pneumatic drills, but they also have certain characteristics, which makes a potential user hesitate before making the switch. And when the decision to use hydraulic drills has been made, the user then faces another choice of equal difficulty: the choice between different hydraulic systems. This paper discusses some of the factors to be taken into account when considering hydraulic drilling equipment for rapid tunneling in hard to medium hard rock. THE CHOICE BETWEEN HYDRAULIC AND PNEUMATIC EQUIPMENT The choice between a hydraulic and a pneumatic drill is much more than just that: It is a choice between two different systems. INTRODUCTION Observations during construction form an integral part of the design and construction of major underground works. Observations as used herein include visual inspection, detailed geologic mapping, and correlation of geology with support conditions, as well as instrumentation to provide more precise information regarding rock movements and support load. This paper describes the application of an observational program to one of the more difficult design and construction problems underground -- the excavation and support of large chambers at shallow depth in rock of variable quality. Emphasis on underground construction for subways and utilities in urban areas is bringing this problem to increased prominence. It is our intent to focus on the design and construction problems associated with such excavations and to describe observational methods which can be employed to aid in their construction. Observational programs may serve two purposes. One is to monitor the rock and support conditions in order to provide early warning of potential construction problems. Such a program should be routinely used in critical locations on major underground excavations of the type described in this paper. The program should be closely coordinated with the inspection effort and construction control. The other purpose is to provide detailed information regarding the interaction of support conditions and rock displacements to aid in development of more efficient design and construction procedures on later projects. Introduction The art of ripping has been around since the Romans built the Appian Way, but only in the last decade has ripping emerged as a close competitor with drilling and blasting in breaking up heavy rock formations. That is not to say ripping is as effective in every case, or even applicable in all cases, but it does provide a cost efficient option in many situations-if the optimum ripping techniques are used. Originally designed only to loosen hard pan, the ripper has evolved into a powerful tool, its capability increasing as the weight and horsepower of tractors increased. The tractor-mounted ripper extended the range of ripping because of the additional weight it brought to bear on the ripper tooth. Tandem ripping added the weight and power of a second tractor, extending the rippability range even further. Of course, the use of ripping depends on the type of material to be ripped. Not all rock can be ripped. Determination of rippability-an art in itself-is often inconclusive but there are certain universal principles that can be considered in the first step toward optimizing ripping techniques. Each of the three basic rock types, igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic, exhibits characteristics that bear on rippability. Igneous rocks are the most difficult to rip because they lack the stratification and cleavage planes essential to ripping hard rock. Sedimentary rocks are generally the most easily ripped since they are built of layers differing in material, texture, color, and thickness. Metamorphic rocks vary in rippability with degree of lamination or cleavage caused by transformation from pre-existing rock. The condition of rock also affects its rippability. Although sedimentary rocks offer the best opportunity to rip and igneous and metamorphic the least, decomposed granite and other weathered igneous and metamorphic rock often can be ripped economically. Little or no trouble is encountered with hardpan, clays, shales, or cemented gravel. Likewise, highly stratified or laminated rocks offer good possibilities for ripping. However, thicklybedded rock formations generally must be drilled and blasted. The physical characteristics that favor ripping may be summarized as follows: • Fractures, faults, and planes of weakness of any kind; • Weathering, resulting from temperature and moisture changes; • Brittleness and crystalline nature; • High degree of stratification or lamination; • Large grain size; • Moisture permeated clay, shale, and rock formations; and • Low compressive strength. Ripper Types A second fundamental to optimal ripping is choosing the right equipment for a particular job. There are three types of rippers-the hinge, the parallelogram, and the adjustable parallelogram. In the hinge ripper the linkage carrying the beam and shank pivots on a fixed point at the rear of the tractor. The resulting arc from up and down movement causes up to 30° differential in the tip-ground angle. Thus, the tooth angle changes as it enters and proceeds to ripping depth. The parallelogram ripper's linkage maintains the same tip-ground angle regardless of tooth depth. This type of ripper has advantages over the hinge-type when ripping above maximum depth, but does not provide the aggressive tooth angle necessary for hard-to-penetrate materials. The adjustable parallelogram combines the benefits of both the hinge and the parallelogram rippers. It has the additional benefit of being able to vary the tip angle to the optimum angle of penetration. It can also be adjusted while moving, for the optimum ripping angle in any material. Several other factors that are important in selecting the right ripping equipment are down pressure available at the tip of the ripper, tractor flywheel horsepower, and the tractor's gross weight. Down pressure at the tip determines whether ripper penetration can be obtained and maintained. Flywheel horsepower rating determines whether the tractor has the power to advance the tip. The tractor's gross weight determines whether the tractor will have sufficient- to use the horsepower. The best ripping procedure depends on the job's actual conditions. While conditions, vary, it is still possible to apply certain proven techniques to a typical ripping situation. Caterpillar Tractor Co.'s Handbook on Ripping says optimum ripping efficiency can be realized if-before actual ripping begins-these questions and answers are considered.

In the mathematical analysis of electrical networks, the electrical devices are often modeled using idealized network elements such as current sources, voltage sources and resistors. An analogous approach is outlined for the modeling of mine ventilation networks, which can be considered nonlinear resistive networks. The proposed modeling technique uses the following five basic (nonreducible) elements: H, Q, D, R and N. These elements are characterized by their pressure gain or loss, their air quantity and their pressure-vs.-quantity relationships, each of which may be known or unknown. In addition to the definition of the basic elements, the necessary conditions for which there exists a unique solution are discussed. This is performed using theoretical developments derived from electrical circuit theory and illustrated in example networks. The proposed procedures are useful in the solution and characterization of mine-ventilation networks.

Representative collections of recent dolomites, and of samples concentrated by leaching-out of coexisting magnesian calcites, provide grounds for appraisal of the compositions and cation ordering in recent dolomitized sediments. Unit cell volumes for near-stoichiometric compositions exceed those of ordered dolomite and increase as the departures from regular cation order became more pronounced. Infrared absorption maxima of disordered examples occur at perceptibly lower frequencies. Stable isotope ratios indicate that best ordered examples formed in highly saline environments. Present observations are qualitatively reconciled with data from synthetic products described by other authors.

The small miner and small mine have an important role to play in the finding, developing and production of our mineral resources. "Help, not hinder" must be our byword. We must push in every way we can devise to change the adversary position of government and environmental movements. We need the small mines and they must be encouraged, not hindered. Technically excellent and adequate equipment is available, and needed information is also available to the small operation. Environmental questions and problems must be fully considered regardless of the size of a mining operation.

A key component of the Inland Feeder Project is the Riverside Badlands Tunnel, a7.9-mile stretch subjected to high internal and external hydraulic pressures passing beneath highly eroded hills in a semi rural environment. The tunnel presented significant design and management challenges to the project team. This paper describes the formula for project success used to manage the design of this complex pressure tunnel, from team member selection to the completion of all contract documents, on schedule and below budget. The project team dealt with sensitive regional and local community issues and won the trust of the community. The team included participation by senior management and recognized experts from inception to finish. The team worked diligently to build quality into design and adopted a claims avoidance approach to management and preparation of documents.

This paper studied the flotation separation of feldspar, zircon and kyanite from quartz with a mixture of cationic and anionic collectors. Tests show that collector mixture has specially good effect, using it, the separation of these three silicate minerals from quartz can be successfully achieved at the natural pH value of tap water in the absence of any acid, fluoride and other inorganic reagents. The properties and characteristics of collector mixture were analysed. By means of IR-spectra, ESCA and AES, the action mechanism between collector mixture and minerals was throughoutly studied.

Magnetic separators are commonly used as an effective and low-cost method to concentrate paramagnetic or ferromagnetic minerals. These versatile separators are often used in multistage circuit configurations to further improve concentrate recovery and/or grade. Although these circuits are generally very efficient, field studies suggest that the layout of multistage circuits can be less than ideal for many industrial operations. To illustrate this shortcoming, a theoretical analysis has been conducted to compare different circuit configurations for magnetic separators. The resulting knowledge base has been used to establish generic engineering guidelines for the layout of multistage circuits. The potential improvements in separation efficiency that may be realized through the application of these guidelines have been demonstrated using a simple case study.

An erector transporter (ET) has been designed and built to lift, carry and erect heavy machinery components, in particular the components of a 7.6 m diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM), within the access tunnels of a submarine coal mine in Eastern Canada. The ET is capable of manoeuvring within a 7.6 m tunnel while precisely positioning components as large as 6 m in diameter and weighing up to 27 tonnes each. The unit can negotiate 20% grades while carrying loads of 30 tonnes. The major design features, verification tests and performance trial results are presented. The versatility of the ET is such that many other applications are possible.

An experimental study of the particle charac¬teristics of the magnesium carbonate crystals formed by the reaction between magnesium chloride and sodium bicarbon¬ate at different temperatures is described. The rate of growth of magnesium carbonate crystals for any constant tempera¬ture is established, and this rate of growth is related to the degree of supersaturation at the given temperature. The activation energy calculated using empirical constants de¬rived from the relationship between the crystal growth rate and supersaturation, is indicative of a surface-reaction mechanism.

In analyzing cost performance, managers must initially consider the issue of scope. Is the analysis for a single responsibility center or multiple centers? For a single period or a number of periods? If multiple responsibility centers are being examined, how can managers compensate for differences in their sizes? Several techniques have been developed to analyze the relationships in a set of financial statements at a single point in time and the trends in these relationships over multiple periods. Cross-sectional techniques focus on the first of these, and time-series techniques look at the latter. Although this text focuses on cost performance, these methods also can be used for revenue-related analyses.

In the present study, the possibilities of use of natural zeolitic tuffs from the Skaloma area, Rhodope prefecture, Greece, for the removal of Pb and Zn ions from aqueous solutions has been studied. The equilibrium data were examined for different grain sizes, pH?s and initial concentrations. An apparent kinetic study was also carried out for different time intervals at constant temperature and pulp density. For the chemical equilibrium study the Freundlich isotherm was used. The experimental results verified the favored behavior of zeolite on lead ions and the quick kinetic of the process whilst the efficiency of the ion exchange on zinc is rather limited. The grain size of the material did not greatly affect the performance of the process. The removal of metal ions worked better at lower pH. The Freundlich isotherms are in good agreement with the experimental data.

The bauxite deposits on the Pocos de Caldas Plateau in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, were formed by the differential weathering and leaching of alcaline rocks in a ring structure. Their action on steep topography formed heterogeneous ore posture and chemical grades. Variographic analysis of several of these deposits show nested structures that are probably related to ore genesis. Kriged ore reserves estimation are presented with emphasis on the data pro cessing method that was employed. Programs were written in APL. Its intrinsic use of matrices contributed to faster programming and less computer time. In many cases looping was eliminated. The high resolution graphic resourses of APL. workspace facilitated programming of variogram analysis, fitting, and regularization. APL sub-routines are presented for variogram calculation and kriging.

Mining in Cushenbury Canyon began in 1860 when John Cushenbury left his Holcomb Valley gold prospect and discovered a silver vein in the limestones of the present day Cushenbury Mine. Cushenbury Canyon is located along the western boundary of the Mojave Desert in southern California and on the north slope of the San Bernardino Mountains. The Holcomb Valley, immediately south of Cushenbury Canyon, was the most prolific gold producer in southern California. Gold mining dominated the area until World War II. Interest then turned to the Lucerne Valley limestone deposits when Kaiser Steel built a plant in Fontana, CA. The steel making process required large amounts of metallurgical grade limestone. In 1956, Kaiser Cement constructed a cement plant and limestone mine in Cushenbury Canyon. In 1982, Kaiser modernized the facility to a four-stage, preheater-precalciner system. Mitsubishi Cement Corp. purchased the property in April 1988. The company further modified the facility to create the most efficient and modem cement plant in the US.

Quarrying is an important activity as it significantly contributes to the economy of a country. This activity presupposes the destruction of the natural vegetation, the removal of the surface soil and deposition of inactive materials. The lack of fertile soil in these disturbed areas is usually a problem for the plant cover establishment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential of the establishment of ten herbaceous plant species to inactive quarries with the use of limited amount of fertile soil. The research was conducted in the area of the quarries of the cement manufacture company ?TITAN?, Thessaloniki, Greece. On a terrace of one of the quarries, a 2 cm layer of fertile soil was placed. In early October 2007, the herbaceous species, Lolium rigidum, Festuca arundinacea, Bromus inermis, Agropyrum desertorum, Phalaris aquatica, Dactylis glomerata, Medicago sativa, Medicago lupulina, Sanguisorba minor and Phacelia tanacetifolia, were seeded separately. The first results indicated that among the tested species Dactylis glomerata, Festuca arundinacea and Phacelia tanacetifolia had the highest establishment capability.
