Few metals or industrial minerals can boast a better growth record over the past fifteen years than the borates. This period of growth occurred before the influence of any large-scale use in plastics or high-energy fuels. These new developments not only provide expanding markets, but the programs related to their development are generating research information that will lead to many other new uses. The most dynamic growth areas for refined products of boron or borates are in the acid, the oxide and the reduced forms, such as the metal and the hydrides. Expanding requirements for these products will modify the emphasis on the use of naturally occurring sodium borates. Any borate from which boron can be economically extracted will become a potentially important ore. This is particularly true of the calcium borate, colemanite. Only one large deposit in the Western World has ever been developed where the principal economic minerals are sodium borates, This factor alone would discourage any exploration program directed solely toward the discovery of these ores; on the other hand, ample exploration opportunities for calcium borates exist in the desert regions of California and Nevada. It is therefore reasonable to restrict a program to this region, in spite of geologically favorable areas in foreign countries such as Turkey, Argentina and Chile.

Introduction Cross borehole seismic tomography (CBST) is a geophysical technique that allows definition of the distribution of some physical rock property between two boreholes. The method is similar to the computer-assisted tomography (CAT) scans used by the medical industry. This paper describes the method, its applications and the developing trends in its use that interest the mining industry. The idea of using tomography in connection with geophysical methods for measuring rock properties between boreholes has been around for three or four decades. Until the advent of high-speed, large-capacity computers, the necessary calculations were too formidable for production use. Another factor in the development of the technique has been the refinement of a mathematical base to meet the needs of the medical industry. The geophysical applications have benefited from this refinement. An extensive discussion of the basic theory is given in Kak and Slaney (1988). CBST, although widely researched and written about, is still not extensively put to use in mining and engineering projects. Most real world examples in the literature have come from research carried out by government laboratories or by large companies. An exception is the regular use by Prospection Geophysique Francaise (Cottin et al., 1986) in damsite investigations. The Japanese appear to be doing extensive research and testing of CBST's uses in civil engineering projects (Saito et al., 1988). Canada is researching the use of the method in connection with nuclear waste site investigations (Wong et al., 1987). Finland has tested the method in connection with a foundation investigation for a nuclear power plant (Cosma et al., 1984). In the US, the US Bureau of Mines has taken an interest in using CBST as a means to enhance in situ mining operations (Tweeton, 1988). Major oil companies are examining the method as a tool in oil field development (Justice et al., 1989). Description of the method CBST involves placing a series of receivers down one borehole and recording transmissions from an energy source placed successively at a series of positions in another hole. The objective is to generate a dense network of seismic raypaths between the holes. The denser the network of raypaths, the better the features between the boreholes are resolved. Either seismic travel times or sine wave amplitudes are measured by the receivers. Analysis of travel times between boreholes develops a picture of rock velocities between the holes. Analysis of seismic wave amplitudes develops a picture of the distribution of energy transmission characteristics between the holes. These seismic properties can be used to define occurrences of fracture zones, lenticular sequences or other important geologic data not apparent from examination of the borehole logs. When longitudinal (compressional) and transverse (shear) waves are analyzed, the physical properties, such as elastic moduli, can also be mapped. When wave amplitudes are measured, rather extensive corrections to the data are necessary. There is some disagreement among researchers as to the feasibility of making some of the corrections. For this reason, this paper will concentrate primarily on travel time analysis. Wave amplitude analysis will be mentioned occasionally only in passing. This does not mean that amplitude analysis does not provide important data on rock parameters, only that for the present there are limitations on its uses. Vertical seismic profiling (VSP), extensively used in recent years in oil exploration, is similar to CBST. Instead of using two boreholes, however, the VSP method uses an array of seismic sources or detectors down one hole and an array of detectors or sources along the surface radiating outward from the hole. While adequate for determining vertical velocity distributions, the VSP method is not, by itself, suitable for most engineering or mining projects. Experiments using an optically polished Pyrex disk and aqueous dodecylammonium acetate (DAA) films showed that the velocity with which the films recede increases markedly if the runs are repeated at short time intervals, where equilibrium cannot be reattained. This results from DAA molecules being desorbed from the disappearing liquid-air interface and being deposited on the solid-air interface being formed. Controlled experiments with Pyrex particles in a modified Hallimond tube showed a similar increase in flotation rate, again due to excess adsorption of DAA molecules that were transferred to the solid-air interface from the bubble on contact.

Based on two in-situ measurements and mathematical analysis, the micro-climate in a large central underground pump and power station has been discussed in this paper. It is found from the research that the "semi- infinite" body model in the general heat transfer can closely represent the heat exchange process in the air flow-surrounding rock-adiabatic intermittent heat source complex in the station. Finally, computer simulations were made to calculate the micro-climate in a similar pump and power station where power machines operate intermittently. The simulation results are quite satisfactory. It can provide useful information for decision- making in the air conditioning of such stations.

The West Leg Interceptor is part of a new sanitary sewer system in the southwest suburbs of Cleveland. The first two construction contracts were excavated in glacial soils varying from hard tills to pressurized silts and flowing sands. These soil and groundwater conditions were locally problematic during shaft and tunnel excavations and final lining construction. A variety of solutions were developed primarily during construction. During the WLI-1R Contract, subgrade pressures, continued ground losses, and displacements necessitated extra eductor wells and modified inverts for stabilization of shafts. At the WLI-2Contract, one shaft excavation in similar ground required only one extra well. In the WLI-1R tunnel, localized inflows of groundwater, silt, and sand through the geotextile fabric were stopped by cement grouting. In one WLI-2 connector tunnel, damage to the TBM flood doors combined with wet, flowing silt and sand led to ground losses, surface settlements, plugging, patching, and chemical grouting. The concrete lining in the main WLI-2 tunnel required remedial work to improve watertightness at joints.

Investment in mining and related process facilities will be more costly and complex in the 1980s than ever before. Interest rates and inflation are soaring; regulations are expanding; and in order to achieve economies of scale, plant facilities and mines are getting larger. As the pace quickens, the time/cost circuit closes around the resource owner or developer. Larger modern projects cost more money and take more time to build. The longer it takes to bring a project onstream, the more it costs in interest, escalation, and lost production. One solution to the time/cost squeeze is to take advantage of systems developed by major contractors serving the mining industry. These contractors have been serving clients in planning and executing large and small projects for many years. They have developed systems which, if applied at an early point in the project's life, can be a significant benefit in development of mineral resources. The systems involve performance of feasibility studies, economic evaluations, and the project installation itself. First the Feasibility Study Feasibility studies can minimize risk through systematic evaluations while progressing toward the ultimate objective-an operating plant. Normally, studies are initiated with a minimum amount of specific information and a maximum number of as¬sumptions. Through the course of the study program, assumptions are continuously confirmed, refined, or rejected by facts until a sound basis for decision is available. High on the list of cost effective tools for evaluation is the use of a geostatistically derived sampling program that provides a highly accurate ore reserve estimate for economic evaluation. The particular impact of imported industrial minerals varies within the Industry and is dependent upon many diverse factors. In a similar way, the impact on individuals has been varied and the degree of impact will depend partially on the individual's ability to handle change. Just as many corporations are adjusting their marketing strategy and production methods to compensate for imported mineral products; individual managers, mining engineers and geologists are making adjustments to their own personal job marketing techniques and on-the-job operating procedures. Modifying the degree of impact for both industry and individuals depends upon the ability to adapt.

Nutrien has six potash mines in Saskatchewan and has been proactive in maintaining the integrity of their tailings facilities through ongoing assessment, design, operation, inspection, and monitoring. Nutrien commissioned a system inventory and semi-quantitative risk analysis (SQRA) of all dikes to further environmental stewardship at their potash facilities. The inventory assessed nearly 100 dikes; each dike was rated according to a probability and consequence factor and assigned a risk score. The risk scores were used to develop a risk matrix for each of the six sites and risk-response actions for each dike and segment. The inventories and SQRAs will help each site assess priorities for investigation and risk mitigation, if necessary. The study results will also help Nutrien refine corporate wide tailings governance standards and demonstrate compliance with various governance regulatory obligations.

The clays in Eastern Washington occur in a variety of forms and are extracted for uses in Face Brick, paper coatings, and aggregates. Not in large volumes in comparison to other areas, not even from impressive large mines. However, mans utilization of these clays has progressed from historical clay tablets to the present technically oriented manufactured products of today. White Face Brick, perhaps the whitest produced anywhere is the unique product produced by INTERPACE CORPORATION's Mica Plant from these unusual clays. It is this basic characteristic feature of the clay's in the Mica area that differentiate them from the other clay's in this belt. ORIGIN The significant properties of clay's used in Face Brick are plasticity, fired color, fired strength, dry and fired shrinkage, the PCE or Pyrometeric Cone Equivalent, and extrudability. Testing clay's for these properties is standard laboratory procedure. No two clays are alike, and seldom can one clay be substituted for another. Mica White Clays respond favorable to all these properties, but more especially, the Mica Clays fire to a brilliant white color, from almost the natural state. The geologic history of Eastern Washington is largely conjectural because of the absence of rocks representing segments of geologic time. The oldest rocks in this area are the argillaceous and arenaceous sedimentary rocks which have been slightly metamorphosed. These rocks have been correlated with the Belt Series of the Pre-Cambrian age, although some may be older. Fullers earth has been mined since about 1920 in southwest Georgia and the adjoining area of Florida. In 1935, the mineral was named "attapulgite" after the source of a sample near the town of Attapulgus, Decatur County, Georgia. Mining and processing of the clay was described in a 1930 publication1 at a time when petroleum refiners were the major users. In the years since then, the uses and users of attapulgite have multiplied, and both mining methods and processing methods have been changed to optimize the clay for the new uses. A comprehensive review of the properties and applications of attapulgite 2 has been published. Only a brief review will be given here to explain the properties being sought and to show how these properties are optimized by mining and processing practices.

Large (> 100,000 oz.) sediment hosted disseminated gold (SHDG) deposits are often spatially associated with anticlines. Many SHDG deposits are within or closely associated with windows. Windows are erosional manifestations of fold culminations (4-way closed anticlines). Hydrocarbons are often trapped in fold culminations in the Canadian Rockies, and may account for degraded hydrocarbons in many SHDG deposits. In the Eastern Basin and Range Province, Mesozoic anticlines may have been large scale conduits fm gold bearing Mesozoic and Cenozoic hydrothermal fluids which became trapped and/or concentrated at the fold culminations.

The author is the leader of the Extractive Industries Task Force of the International Valuation Standards Committee. The Task Force has developed an Extractive Industries section for inclusion in the International Valuation Standards (IVS). The Extractive Industries Guidance Note provides comprehensive standards for valuation of all minerals and petroleum industry property types for all valuation/appraisal purposes. The document is scheduled for release as an exposure draft for public comment by December 2003, then it will be finalized for publication in the IVS in mid-2004. This paper discusses the content and philosophy of the Extractive Industries Guidance Note within the context of the framework of the IVS. It also discusses the international implications and implementation of this IVS addition.

The results of using a simple analytical solution and a relatively complex numerical model to estimate ground water inflow to an open pit mine are compared. The analytical solution assumes lateral, radial flow to a fully penetrating pit in an idealized confined aquifer, whereas the numerical model simulates fully three-dimensional flow to a partially penetrating pit from a water table aquifer. The latter is a more realistic simulation of the problem, but the former method is significantly easier to use. Comparison of the results obtained with the two methods for some typical hydrogeologic conditions encountered in mining yields ratios between them in the range of 0.2 to 0.6. These values can be used as a coefficient in the Pit Flow analytical solution to produce reasonable estimates of in-flow even when there are significant differences from the idealized conditions implicit in its application.

An industrial mineral, says the Glossary of Geology, is "any rock, mineral, or other naturally occurring substance of economic value, exclusive of metallic ores, mineral fuels, and gemstones; one of the nonmetallics." Probably most geologists and engineers would accept this simple and straightforward definition, at least as a general statement. On analysis, however, certain anomalies crop up. For example, what is metallic and what is nonmetallic? Bauxite and ilmenite certainly qualify as metallic ores, but both are also raw materials of important nonmetallic substances; hence they are included in this book. Another anomaly is that, by common consent, the term industrial minerals may include not only rocks and minerals but also certain manufactured products, such as cement and lime, and even mixed groups of natural and artificial products, such as abrasives and refractories. Thus the central realm of the industrial minerals is clear enough, but its boundaries tend to be indefinable. Since a definition that allowed for every irregularity in the outer fringes would be excessively unwieldy, the one quoted above may be considered satisfactory. The expression industrial minerals is commonly equated with nonmetallics, and with the somewhat more precise phrase industrial minerals and rocks as in the title of this book.

The Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center surveyed MSHA Coal Mine Safety and Health Districts to monitor the implementation of computer based atmospheric monitoring systems (AMS) in underground coal mines. This survey was first completed in 1984, and has been periodically updated with the latest update completed in 1995. The utilization of computer based monitoring systems has steadily increased over the past 12 years, with over 16 percent of all producing underground coal mines using this technology in 1995. This paper discusses the results of the MSHA 1995 AMS Survey.

Calcium chloride is widely used for dust control on unpaved roadway surfaces, in base course stabilization, full depth reclamation and for total reconstruction of asphalt roads. Fly ash produced from coal-burning electric power plants have also been used in road construction. This paper examines the synergistic effect of calcium chloride and fly ash on compaction density and strength development of unpaved roadways. A mathematical model has been developed which provides excellent agreement with the experimental data. Based on these results, the potential of calcium chloride - fly ash treatments for typical mine road construction is discussed.

Quick, inexpensive and accurate mineral-phase identification is of utmost importance to applied mineralogists. The precise relationship between the intensity of measured backscattered electrons in a scanning electron microscope and the average atomic number of the specimen is still argued. Nevertheless, much can be gained by using backscattered electron images to identify mineral phases in a specimen. An application was developed to facilitate this method and makes it a practical, inexpensive and valuable option in many mineralogical investigations. Gold Fields Mining Corp. is evaluating gold mineralization beneath thick, wet alluvium at the Chimney Creek project, Humboldt County, Nevada. Contamination of reverse-circulation samples has been visually apparent since drilling began in the area. Tests have shown that, while contamination can affect assays, reverse-circulation holes appear to define mineralized zones almost as well as diamond-drill holes. To improve reverse-circulation sample integrity, several techniques were tried (including a stiff-mud injection system) but with limited success. Diamond-core drilling continues to be used in conjunction with reverse-circulation drilling to further delineate the mineralization.

Electronic data processing' is becoming a necessary part of all large mining operations. Accountants, geologists, mining engineers, samplers, and truck drivers are needed to operate a mine. So appear to be systems analysts, computer operators, and software engineers. Trucks, loaders, and drills must be used to extract useful material from the ground. So must be mainframe and microcomputers, plotters, digitizers, and computer terminals. The papers presented in this section describe experience gained in Europe, Australia, and North and South America. The mining and data processing environments and the size of the companies vary significantly, but the conclusions drawn are often strikingly similar. Common answers to often-asked questions can be summarized as follows: - Why invest in data processing? The main reason is that information systems can supply accurate and timely information for better decision-making. Other reasons are mentioned including, to speed-up the processing of large volumes of information, to perform operations which cannot be performed manually, or to reduce costs. But all of these reasons appear ancillary to that of supplying accurate and timely information.
