The three key parameters of mine fires are local airflow velocity, temperature and oxygen concentration. According to the theories of seepage in porous media, heat transfer and heat dispersion, mathematical models were constructed based on the three parameters. The models can be used for early prediction of mine fires and for estimation of the level of spontaneous combustion. Proper use of the models can assist in preventing and controlling mine fires. The SX-EW plant consists of three parallel trains with two extraction and two stripping stages, with the mixing chambers situated on the same side of the settlers, using a coalescing launder to direct the solution flow to the outlet weirs in the side as the mixers. In the tankfarm the loaded organic tanks will include a coalescing packed column to separate the aqueous entrainment. Organic from gunk will be recovered in a packed column, instead of a centrifuge. The EW plant utilize polymer concrete cells with permanent stainless steel cathodes with edge strips on side and bottom, without wax.

A new computer simulation model for the analysis of underground coal mine production systems in the Peoples Republic of China is presented. As a case study the model was used to analyse the railway system of an existing underground coal mine. Some results of this first application are given in this paper and some conclusions of common interest for underground rail haulage systems are discussed.

In the past 30 years, there have been tremendous advancements in the uses and applications of column flotation. From their first use as final cleaners that could produce excellent grades at the cost of recoveries, columns are now being used in every stage of the flotation circuit as well as is SX-EW. Columns as roughers, final scavengers and even at the end of CIL circuits, are finding their way into the marketplace. Operational results of these new uses are presented. INTRODUCTION Flotation columns have been in use since the early 1950's in the U.S. (Hollingsworth, 1952) and the early 1960's in Canada (Trembley, Boutin, Wheeler, 1963). Application of column flotation has been somewhat diverse. In the early years, columns were used predominately for molybdenum cleaning in Canada and for phosphate flotation in the United States. Unfortunately, results met with skepticism and disdain as the columns were hard to operate, temperamental and although producing high grades, could not achieve acceptable recoveries. Since the inception of column flotation technology, the degree of knowledge for design and operation of columns has vastly improved. Despite improvements in the technology, there is still some reluctance by mineral producers to investigate the use of column flotation cells for processing stages other than cleaner flotation. This characterization is in part due to the proven advantage of flotation columns in reducing gangue entrainment in the froth product which results in higher grade products and/or fewer processing stages. Also, during the development of column technology, different types of spargers have been used with varying degrees of success. Furthermore, the general knowledge base of parameters affecting column flotation design and operation have advanced tremendously. Inefficient, or primitive, sparger design, coupled with the lack of column design and operating knowledge and experience, resulted in poor metallurgical and mechanical performance in many cases. Unfortunately, this lack of knowledge caused many column installations to be characterized as failures. The industry felt that columns could not achieve high recoveries, especially when dealing with coarse particles. Therefore, columns were characterized as cleaners, where low recoveries could be tolerated as recirculating loads rather than direct losses and froth cleaning advantages of the quiescent column flotation regime could be realized. Fortunately for the minerals industry, some producers have stood at the forefront of technology and allowed the column to be utilized for new applications. In the last decade, column flotation applications have expanded to virtually every mineral system and plant location throughout the world. The expanded application of columns has generated a new wave of interest for processing various streams. One of the most notable is in the use of columns as rougher cells. This is of particular interest to "green-field" plants and plants where expansions are taking place. Here, metallurgical superiority can be combined with maximum capital and operating cost advantages for a rapid return on investment. The superior results experienced to date, have generated a cohesive vision of the future in mineral processing where flotation columns function as single stage primary separation devices (roughers) with a single stage cleaner, if necessary. The advantages of column flotation go far beyond their original uses. We now have seen columns used as final tail scavengers, in SX-EW plants and even at the end of CIL circuits. Some of these cases will be reviewed. CASE STUDIES In an attempt to show the diversification of column flotation to many facets of the mineral processing plant, a variety of case studies will be discussed. Some of these were designed by the authors while others have been provided by plant sources. It is important to note that in each successful case, the columns were designed using the author's design and scale-up approach. This paper will discuss the Final Tunnel Linings which were placed in 6700m of a 2.32m inside diameter precast concrete lined interceptor sewer tunnel in Staten Island, New York. Two methods were employed to install the final tunnel linings. One method involved forming and placing a polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete cunnette invert, followed by an arch pour. The second method involved the jacking of reinforced concrete pipe into the tunnel, followed by a low density cellular concrete backfill grout. These two methods will be described and compared.

This article examines health and safety trends during the past 10 years at Appalachian surface and underground bituminous coal mines. Data for Appalachia include Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia and eastern Kentucky. These states account for more than 90% of the coal production in the Appalachian region. (Production, accidents and fatalities in Ohio, Maryland, Tennessee and Alabama are not included in computing Appalachian trends.) Trends for Appalachian underground mines are differentiated by size and mining method into three categories: - Small mines with fewer than 50 employees. - Large nonlongwall mines with 50 or more employees. - Longwall mines (mines with at least one longwall production face).

Flotation performance varies widely as feed conditions change. Maintaining metallurgical targets has proven almost impossible without automatic control. Traditional control methods and procedures are inadequate. Using on-line x-ray analyzers, reagent control and accurate froth level control with flotation models and "Expert" computer control systems has improved metallurgical performance significantly. Examples of actual plant cases are described as well as the expert system methodology.

The paper presents a new method for boring of blind inclined shafts. The machine, called BorPak, developed by The Robbins Company, operates similar to a mini TBM. It is a remote operated, self propelled drilling machine mounted on a crawler for high mobility and launched out of a starting tube for quick collaring. A short history of the operation of the prototype in Scandinavia and Canada is included in the paper. The BorPak is capable of boring raises at angles from 30° to 900 from horizontal in sizes ranging from 1.2m-2m diameter without the use of drill pipe. The BorPak represents an innovative tool for improved performance, reduced costs and creating a safer working environment.

The economics of developing and operating small precious metal mines are unique and require much more scrutiny than larger mines since a limited tonnage must carry a heavy burden of capital investment as well as operating cost per unit ton to be mined and processed. Moreover, potential operators of small mines do not have the required expertise available to critically evaluate the technical and economic aspects of their projects. In this paper, the authors have attempted to provide technical and economic guidelines for developing and operating small precious metal mines. Capital and operating cost estimates as well as return on investment are provided for various scenarios utilizing different mining and processing techniques.

Mining equipment, like all other equipment, is subject to failure. Since most failures occur at random and are unexpected, corrective maintenance is usually more expensive and causes more down-time than preventive maintenance. In order to reduce the number of failures and thereby increase the availability of an equipment or system, preventive maintenance can be scheduled at predetermined points of time. The preventive maintenance scheduling policies presented in this paper utilize reliability and probability theories. They can be applied to various production bottlenecks where high cost equipment precludes having sufficient quantities of stand-by units.

A single four feet diameter cell, treating a Cu/Mo rougher concentrate, has been fully instrumented and linked to a Distributed Control System. This has enabled the writers to further understand the mechanics of operation of the cell, particularly that of the "TRANSITION ZONE". This is the volume between the feed port and the pulp-froth inter- face. The results have shown a need for the re-designing the control loops whereby the Transition Zone volume (or pulp level ) becomes the single most important control parameter to achieve the de- sired recovery. Air consumption, previously thought to have played this role, is now kept at precoalescence level s for maximum efficiency.

Geotechnical investigations for underground projects are subject to a variety of constraints, including factors such as accessibility, geological complexity, thickness of oberburden and finance. As a result, the extent of geological data available for route selection and assessment of underground design and construction problems may vary between wide limits. It is essential that the data collected, the degree to which it is representative, and the confidence with which the problems can be anticipated, should be reflected in the type of contract set up and the way in which the contract documents are written. The paper addresses the methods by which investigations can be focussed to make suitable overall ground assessments for feasibility level studies. Subsequent investigations can then be objectively directed toward obtaining data on specific geotechnlcal problems or aspects which impact tunnel, cavern and shaft design and construction. The extent of investigations at the preliminary and design engineering stages must be closely related to the geotechnlcal surveillance and control during excavation. Fixed-price contracts necessitate a secure geotechnical data base prior to bidding, and the provision of that to the tenderers. By contrast, 'design-as-you-go' contracts minimize the geotechnical information needed before construction, yet require immediate assessment of the excavated ground for determination of support requirements and payment category.

Innovative mining technology came to Texas in the form of bucket wheel excavator/cross-pit spreader systems. Texas Utilities Mining Company put the first system to work at its Big Brown Mine in December 1985. The second such system was put into operation at the Monticello Mine in February 1991. The cross-pit spreader systems are mobile, electrically powered, excavation and conveyor systems, the principal components of which include bucket wheel excavators (BVE) and an across-the-pit conveyor (spreader). These crawler mounted machines operate as a unit; the BVE's excavate overburden, feed it via conveyors to the spreader which in turn conveys the material across the open pit and onto the developing spoil bank. The system at the Big Brown Mine is composed of 2 BVE's and an across-the-pit conveyor while the Monticello system is made up of 1 BVE and a spreader. The BVE's prestrip overburden preparing a dragline bench for the final removal of overburden. Numerous evaluations, including lignite production requirements, economics, overburden characteristics, rehandle reduction, spoil stability, and the compatibility with dragline operations, led to the selection of the cross-pit spreader system at the Big Brown Mine. The system has proven itself as a viable and economical means of prestripping. The system's success at the Big Brown Mine led to the development of a second such system at Monticello. The advent of the cross-pit spreader system is viewed by Texas Utilities Mining Company as a viable solution to recovering deeper lignite reserves in a safe and economical manner.

Nautilus is completing the world's first environmental impact assessment (EIA) of seafloor mineral extraction and Nautilus has gained extensive experience conducting environmental studies in subsea environments. Nautilus is currently working on the Solwara 1 Project in the Bismarck Sea, Papua New Guinea, where high grade seafloor massive sulfide deposits lie at ~1600 m water depth. Conducting an EIA in the deep sea presents some interesting and exciting challenges. Seafloor studies commenced in December 2005 using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) fitted out with highly specialized scientific equipment to conduct water quality, sediment, biological and oceanographic studies. During 2007 and 2008, Nautilus launched two two 30-day ROV programs dedicated to environmental baseline studies and during this campaign, over 550 biological, sediment and water samples were collected and over 20,000 seafloor observations were logged. On board specialists included an international team of experts in the field of deep sea marine science. Collaboration between industry and scientific research institutions allows data to be collected for the EIA but also provides an extraordinary opportunity for researchers to access sites that might otherwise remain unobtainable to science. Decision Making (DM) can be defined as a selection process of the best one among the alternatives sets in order to obtain goal, and mostly has an uncertain situation [7]. Every mining engineer is subjected to a number of mining DM problems in daily mining operations. In reality, all stages of mining have its own DM problems. Most of time, engineers do not use scientific methods for DM problems. These problems can mostly be solved by the engineers according to their past experiences and practical studies. Mining engineers often use their intuition in DM process. Experience and intuition have been central to DM because of the frequent lack of quantitative data including geology, grade distribution and ground condition, as well as environmental, social and economic factors [8]. In decision process, linguistic variables become in question and decision makers may not know how these variables are computed [9]. So, the DM process may be qualitative, quantitative or combination of the two. The problem structuring and analysis process is conceptualized in Figure 1 [8]. The qualitative analysis is based primarily on the judgment, knowledge and experience of an expert (or team of experts). In a quantitative analysis, the focus is on facts and the data associated with a problem and a mathematical formulation that encompasses the objectives, variables and constraints of the particular problem. The quantitative analysis has traditionally been the subject of operation research and management science [8].

The ever-increasing power (and decreasing cost) of computers has opened up substantial oppor¬tunities for 'Vision'-based systems in both on-line and off-line control. This paper reviews image analysis applications in use at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) for: •blast and mill feed size monitoring; •AG/SAG mill model-based control; •mineral liberation; and •froth flotation control. The SPLIT™ image analysis system is being used to estimate muck pile and ROM feed sizings. AG/SAG mill feed sizing is being used in a dynamic model for mill control. A new generation mineral liberation analyzer has been developed with Philips Electron Optics. The Philips-JKMRC mineral liberation analyzer offers a substantial improvement in resolution and speed over previous developments. While on-line liberation control continues to be something of a pipe dream, measuring liberation "one shift behind" is now feasible. A robust instrument has been developed to measure flotation froth bubble size and velocity. The instrument also derives a parameter that allows different froth textures to be distinguished. The instrument has been used for on-line control in coal and sulfide flotation. For coal froth, an online ash estimate has been achieved at one site and is being tested at other sites. Overall, image analysis is finding many applications in mineral processing and control.

Cemented rockfill (CRF) is being used to backfill primary and secondary stopes at the Eagle Mine, an underground nickel and copper mine operated by Lundin Mining. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers from the Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) are conducting cooperative research with the mine staff to determine if the size of a CRF sample affects its measured strength properties. Based on previous research by NIOSH, cylindrical samples of CRF ranging in size from six to eighteen inches in diameter were cast at the mine and cured underground. The samples were later transported to the SMRD laboratory and the Michigan Technological University where tests were conducted to determine the strength and elastic properties of the CRF. To further analyze the relationship between backfill density and compressive strength, different ASTM International compaction techniques were used to cast the samples. For comparison, tests were also conducted on in-situ core samples that were drilled from a stope which had been backfilled with the same CRF mix. The data collected from this study not only improves our understanding of CRF in-situ properties but also helps optimize Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) methods for backfill preparation and testing.
