This report describes actions taken to control silica dust at the Yucca Mountain Exploratory Studies Facility (ESF), a tunnel located in Southern Nevada that is part of a scientific program to determine site suitability for a potential nuclear waste repository. The rock is a volcanic tuff containing significant percentages of both quartz and cristobalite. Water use for dust control was limited because of scientific test requirements. A major dust reduction was achieved with an intermediate air cleaning station located on a rear deck of the TBM trailing gear.

Bigger is indeed better in today's surface mining operations. That is especially true regarding haul trucks. Building larger, "supersize" trucks, however, means designing more powerful engines and drive systems that are also more efficient and environmentally friendly. And miners are demanding that these trucks have longer service lives with minimum maintenance. So truck makers are teaming with engine manufacturers and mining customers to design these larger trucks that will ultimately lead to reduced mining costs. About 180 of those truck makers, engine designers and miners gathered in Tucson, AZ in September to discuss the state of haul trucks in today's mining environment. Haulage 2000 was sponsored by World Mining Equipment and attracted attendees from around the world. Manufacturers described the latest in haul truck advancements. These included the design of more powerful engines, improvements to mechanical and ac and dc drive systems and suggestions on how to reduce maintenance spending. Technology improvements in tires for larger struck was discussed as was the cost efficiency of new, lighter-weight bed liners. The following is a summary of a handful of the presentations.

Among other types of sustainability indicators, linguistic variables have been proposed. During the past few years considerable effort for using the fuzzy logic and linguistic variables (LVs) in environmental decision-making for the mineral industry has been made. The linguistic variables defined could, among others properties, describe the property of acceptability for environment for various environmental indicators. Some proposals for construction of such variables are based on administrative decisions from environmental impact assessment procedures for mining, which provide information for acceptability of quality kind for environment (e.g. obtained from public participation, experts, environmental administration). The measures of evidence for construction have to be based on sets (not only on the members of sets). The administrative decisions with their statements and explanations could be considered as such sets. The measures of evidence appropriate are plausibility and belief measures. Using the more elaborated methods from the theory of evidence, the better estimation of those measures could be achieved. The methods of constructing the linguistic variables, previously suggested and based on obtained measures, are also discussed.

INTRODUCTION With each passing year, the general public becomes increasingly aware of the potential hazards associated with many products and services previously considered unharmful. This new consciousness is especially evident in the workplace, both as the result of advances in scientific understanding and the influx of concerned, responsible professionals into the labor movement. For example, data produced by epidemiologists doing retrospective mortality studies which related mortality to toxic substance exposures has often been the prime motivating factor behind reductions in exposure standards. This certainly has been the historical case with many radiation exposure standards, including the limitations set for "Working Level" exposure. The concept of "Working Level" was introduced in PHS Publication No. 494 as a result of both the difficulty in relating radiation units to biological effects and the complexity of interaction of radon daughters with the physical environment. WORKING LEVEL One working level is defined as any combination of radon daughters in one liter of air that will alternately release 1.7 x 105 MEV of alpha energy during decay of 210pb (RaD). Its usefulness is that working level can be readily measured in both the field and the laboratory. Because of this, existing occupational exposure standards for radon daughters in both the U. S. and other countries use working level as their basis. In the U. S., the last twenty years has witnessed a significant reduction in radiation exposure standards from 120 working level months to 4 working level months per year. New international standards are being proposed that would be only slightly higher than these current U. S. standards. POTENTIAL EXPOSURES TO RADON DAUGHTERS The universal use of nuclear power, along with the transfer of nuclear technology to developing nations, has significantly increased the demand for fuels. As a result, uranium mining operations have expanded and increased numbers of miners are regularly exposed to radon daughters. In addition to potential exposures in uranium mines, other deep mines such as tin, gold, platinum and tungsten, also have potential exposures due to the distribution of uranium and its accompanying radium throughout much of the earth's crust. The energy crisis has also prompted interest in general population exposure to radon daughters in buildings. Many homeowners, using additional insulation and caulking to seal cracks and conserve energy, have reduced indoor ventilation to the point where working level exposure could become significant, especially in homes with unventilated crawl spaces. In fact, several serious exposure situations have occurred where mine tailings were used for building materials. MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUES Historically, rapid and convenient measurement techniques have been actively sought to improve the ability of ventilation engineers to limit mining exposures through ventilation control. A number of measurement techniques have been developed, including the Kusnetz method (further elaborated by Shalaynev) and techniques developed by Rolle and Tsivoglou. All, however, suffer from similar handicaps that prevent their usefulness in the mining environment. Their main limitation, in terms of minimizing employee exposure, is the elapsed time from the start of sampling until the results can be calculated. It is usually 40 to 90 minutes. This time delay presents both serious economic limitations as well as the potential for exposing workers to high radon daughter concentrations until calculations are completed and corrections made. Further reducing the utility of the Kusnetz and Tsivoglou techniques is the need for tedious calculations that increase the possibility of human error along with the need for cumbersome sampling equipment that is not ideally suited to the mining environment. INSTANT WORKING LEVEL METER To alleviate these problems, the idea of an Instant Working Level Meter was conceived by several groups. Several such instruments were proposed, built, and tested with disappointing results. Although the concepts behind them were sound, the instruments simply failed to measure working level without excessive distortion. In addition, their cost was relatively high, gamma background presented a problem, and sophisticated computations were necessary to determine working level. In short, these systems lacked the design engineering that would make them suitable for the demands of a mining environment.

It is estimated that more than 80% of phosphate rock output in the world is used for fertilizer production. In India, there are only a few high-grade deposits of phosphate ores; therefore, most of the requirement for phosphatic fertilizers is satisfied with imported DAP (diamino phosphoric acid). Due to the drain on foreign exchange reserves, this import-dependent, essential commodity is in short supply in India and, therefore, is sparingly used by farmers. In addition, of the added phosphorus, normally 80% becomes unavailable to plants because phosphorus complexes are formed in soil, causing deleterious effects on plants. In our laboratory, this problem was tackled by using a bacterial consortium of phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria. It resulted in the speeding up of seed germination and increasing available phosphorus in the soil by 14%, over a period of 80 days. To use the low-grade deposits of phosphatic rocks available in India near Hirapur, Madhya Pradesh, India, which contain high amounts of iron, beneficiation through microbial means was used for phosphorus removal. Beneficiation was achieved partially through removal of extra iron by oxidizing ferrous iron from the ore by a Thiobacillus species after removal of impurities containing both silica and iron, instead of sieving and cleaning the ore using different techniques. This resulted in a cleaner ore, with nearly 70% of such impurities removed. The factors for beneficiation technique were standardized at the laboratory level and are being used for scaling up of the process. Thus, the beneficiation of phosphatic rock from Hirapur will be an important first step of phosphorus production in India.

Several final pits in the Seneca No. 1 Surface Coal Mine were abandoned in the 1960's without being reclaimed. In addition, a progressive landslide aggravated by the abandoned mine land conditions was threatening a county road and private property. An AML-funded project to stabilize the landslide and reclaim the final pits was completed in 1986 for the Colorado Division of Mines and Geology (formerly Colorado Mine Land Reclamation Division). The site was visited after ten growing seasons. The land is stable and the vegetation re-establishment is strong. Volunteer native plant species are now invading the reclaimed sites.

"Within underground portions of metro rail networks the traditional approach to a design fire has been to assume a worst credible railcar fire and develop ventilation and egress measures for life safety. This approach is being challenged as a rail network approach to design fires becomes a more practical and realistic approach. The network approach is based on utilizing an in-depth hazard analysis, to understand ignition and fire load sources in tunnels, above and below the floor of the railcar and within stations, and then utilizing a quantitative risk assessment to determine sets of fire scenarios. The process allows small, medium and large fires to be considered, with the consequences also being quantified. The selection of design fires has a significant influence on fire protection measures within a metro network and hence, is a major cost input. The rail network approach provides more robust decisions on fires, based on the hazards present. INTRODUCTION A fire within a rail car or one that occurs as part of a rail system can threaten the lives of users, maintenance staff and emergency services personnel. Fires in metro systems are rare events but can have severe consequences. As a result, any analysis of a potential fire must be thorough and rigorous and address not only regular accidents and small fires, but also very low probability, high consequence scenarios. The fire safety design process for a tunnel and station must start with the design engineers, contractor and operators making a number of key decisions related to fire protection measures, which may have significant cost considerations. One of the key aspects that influences the required fire protection is the design fire and the design fire scenarios, which is a key input for analysis. This paper provides an overview of the author’s experience in designing fire protection measures for rail networks in Europe, Australia and NZ, where a risk based framework is used to develop design fires and scenarios for the whole rail system – trains, stations and tunnels. This system wide approach is innovative, challenges the norms, but provides significantly more informed outcomes. The range of design fires will include small fires that may halt the network, larger fires for smoke hazard system design and significant post-flashover fires to assess the structural response."

"Seeing the elephant" was a term often heard from 1849 to 1859, the period of the great California Gold Rush. The phrase was used by those who dreamed of instant wealth that was believed could be found in California's virgin earth and mighty rivers. When news of fabulous gold strikes throughout the Mother Lode reached far away places, thousands of gold seekers left home and family to join in this incredible adventure. The barren, placid state of California soon became one of the most bustling, populous areas in the West. Before the Rush Before 1848, Mexico ruled California. It was then a remote region, isolated from the urbane world of the East by 2900 km (1800 miles) of scorching desert and impassible mountains. By sea, it was 29 000 km (18,000 miles) via Cape Horn. Spaniards and Mexicans settled the coastal lands on tracts donated to them by the Mexican government. The inland area was the domain of Indians and a few settlers who also had been granted estates by the government. Among those settlers was Captain John Sutter. He had been fortunate enough to obtain about 11 leagues of land (spanning 100 km or 60 miles in length) from Governor Alvarado of Mexico. Sutter was somewhat of a visionary and possessed a gifted tongue. He managed to receive most of what he desired with minimal trouble. Enchanted with Sutter's personality, Alvarado promised him Mexican citizenship. Alvarado also commissioned him to become "representative of the government and officer of justice on the Northern frontier." With uncanny foresight, Sutter began building a fortress on his land in the Sacramento Valley. It later became known as Sutter's Fort. It was more than just a fort, however. It also became a stopping place and home for many foreigners and Americans who traveled to California, and it eventually became the mecca for overland pilgrims. Sutter engaged in many projects. These included a cattle ranch, fur trade and trapping, and the construction of an irrigation system. With the influx of immigrants over the years, the community around the fort grew rapidly. Lumber was much in demand and Captain Sutter agreed to supply the necessary capital for a community sawmill. The site chosen was some 72 km (45 miles) northeast of the fort on the south fork of the American River in the town of Coloma. During the course of its construction, Sutter's carpenter, James Marshall, discovered a problem with the tailrace on the mill. First Strike Early in the morning on Jan. 24, 1848, Marshall was checking the tailrace. He noticed an object shining in a foot of water at the bottom of a ditch. He reached down and picked it up. His heart began to thump wildly as he realized he was holding a gold nugget. Sutter planned to keep the find a secret for as long as possible. This paper presents the results of Caldagi Nickel-Cobalt Ore Deposit's, located in Turkey, reserve and ultimate pit limit design analysis. Reserve analysis of any deposit requires two steps. First one is to constitute of block model of the deposit and second step is to generate ultimate pit limit. The block model of the Caldagi ore deposit has been created by means of geostatistics. The reserves of nickel and cobalt in this block model are defined as resource, approximately 12 million tons of nickel and 1 million tons of cobalt with average grades of 0.9% Ni and 0.03% Co, respectively. Ultimate pit limit analysis has been performed by considering economic, technical and legal factors. In this paper, the ultimate pit limits are generated by Lerchs & Grossmann (L&G) algorithm. As a consequence of ultimate pit limit design, total amount of tonnage to be excavated is 1.4 billions of tons, 700 million of which contains ore and 747 million of which is the tonnage of waste.

Baseline quantities of difficult ground and support types were estimated for the Chattahoochee Tunnel using the Rock Mass Rating system. RMR classifies the ground into five categories, ranging from “very good” to “very poor,” based on five main parameters: intact rock strength, RQD, joint spacing, joint condition, and groundwater inflow. For the Chattahoochee Tunnel, these parameters were independently measured in the cores and shown graphically on the boring logs. A 55 matrix was calculated to obtain the statistical distribution of RMR for the project. Three baseline ground types were defined based on the RMR. Geologic mapping inside the tunnel during construction has verified the accuracy of this method.

Disposal of mine tailings has been recognized as an unavoidable burden of mining companies and local authorities. Conventional methods dispose mine tailings in a passive manner which hardly generates any value from them. On the other hand, growing local communities close to mines need more infrastructures which require great amounts of raw materials. In view of the above mentioned situation, a novel utilization of mine tailings is explored as alternative material for asphalt pavement, in order to extract more value from mine tailings and solve the high cost of pavement material. Inherent physical properties of the mine tailings were first investigated to find out their availability as pavement material. Then test specimens were made as mixture of the mine tailings and other pavement material to be tested in laboratory. In the planning stages for a dozen years, the 9.11 mile long Mount Macdonald Tunnel is the focal point of the $600 million dollar Rogers Pass Project. The paper will discuss the construction of the tunnel that is being carried out from both ends. The eastern portion contractor has used a tunnel boring machine to excavate the upper part of the tunnel and at the west end contractor selected the conventional drill and blast method. A ventilation shaft located near the mid point is the main part of a ventilation system unique in the Western Hemisphere.

Continuing advancements in manufactured diamond materials as used in rock cutting tools have created a new generation of high production tools for mining. This paper reviews the three major manufactured diamond product types available in the mining industry as supplied by General Electric Co., Specialty Materials Dept., and examines the ways these materials are used. As an integral part of this examination, the economic impact of manufactured diamond tools is evaluuted. Time and again, one will find that the premium price for these tools is economically justified when compared to traditional tools.

The dispersion of oily collector has a significant effect on the flotation recovery of ultrafine coal. Generally, reagent dispersion is accomplished by mechanical mixing and/or ultrasonic agitation, followed by direct addition of dispersed collector into the flotation cell. Such dispersion and reagent addition techniques are invariably inadequate and nonselective. A new collector addition technique involving gas phase transport of atomized collector has shown improved results when compared to conventional reagent addition techniques. This technique involves atomization of the collector into the air stream. Under these circumstances, an aerosol is introduced into the flotation cell. Initially, the oil is dispersed within the air phase (continuous with respect to oil), and the air phase is dispersed within the pulp (continuous with respect to aerosol). In the flotation cell, the atomized oil droplets coalesce on the bubble's surface and create a de facto oil-encapsulated bubble. This approach provides excellent dispersion, increases selectivity, and, most significantly, increases the flotation rate of ultrafine coal. Atomization of collector/frother combinations yielded improved flotation recovery and maintained near uniform froth levels, which is a desirable feature in coal flotation. Microscopic examinations of the attachment of oil- coated bubbles at a coal surface were conducted by attachment time and contact angle measurements. Oil-coated bubbles attach at significantly faster rates and with a higher contact angle than oil-free bubbles.

Under specific geological environment, the full extraction of a coal seam is not possible either because of its extraordinary thickness or the presence of surface structures and bodies of water or because of the conditions prevailing in upper seams. Not uncommonly, therefore, for working such seams, pillars of coal are left for the permanent support of the overburden, and voids around the pillars are filled with sand to strengthen the pillars and prevent their deterioration with time. However, the paucity of river sand has focussed attention on the need for alternate strategies including trials with partial filling of the voids. This study has sought to examine in the laboratory the effects of partial and complete filling on the ultimate load bearing capacity and post-failure behaviour of small, tall pillars using artificial material.
