This paper describes the application of the Graphics Assisted Under Ground Engineering (GAUGE) software to a 2-layered room and pillar hard rock mine. The graphics- assisted mine modeling and mine planning capabilities of GAUGE are demonstrated. The system uses polygons to model the room and pillar mine design and displays the model in plan view on the graphics screen,. The planning engineer interactively specifies areas to be mined in the medium or long term. The system calculates and accumulates tonnages and grades for the user-specified areas based on the layer being mined and the particular unit operation (drifting, widening or benching).

A high-strength, industrial-grade membrane filter- cloth capable of high flow rates and sub-micrometric particle retention has been developed. A filtration system using this filter- combined with special filtration techniques and using tubular-filters makes possible the filtration of many difficult-to-jilter slurries. Small, discrete, slowly-settling particles are formed into filter cakes that when pulsed of the membrane filter cloth do not redisperse but settle rapidly to form a dense filter under- flow. A positive separation of solids from liquids is obtained.

A comparison of the IMC Anionic Process and the CLDRI Process, based on pilot plant testing of waste pebble by Jacobs Engineering is presented. Estimated costs for constructing and operating a beneficiation plant utilizing dolomite flotation are given. Research to develop practical flotation processes for removing dolomite from low-grade phosphate rock has been a high priority for the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research. The Institute funded the above pilot plant programs in 1998 and 2000. The Florida Phosphate industry currently deals with the increasing dolomite content of ore reserves by practicing selective mining. Heavy media separation plants installed at two mines to remove dolomite from pebble are not being operated. The flotation separation of dolomite from waste pebble requires that the flotation feed be ground. Grinding liberates the mineral species and produces particle sizes small enough to be floated. Only two dolomite flotation processes, the IMC Anionic Process and the CLDRI Process, have been successfully demonstrated on flotation feed that has not been deslimed after grinding. Deslimed flotation feed, relative to undeslimed feed, has improved flotation performance and reduced reagent consumption. However, for the above mention processes, undeslimed ground feed increases the yield of concentrate because the phosphate desliming losses are avoided.

Jigs are the most important equipment used in the separation process that exploits the stratification of particulate matter under the influence of hydrodynamic and gravitational forces. Very little is known about the determined mechanisms by which particles of varying density, size, and shape stratify in a moving bed. A model is developed by using the discrete element method to understand the behavior of jig bed. This model is utilized here to study the stratification behavior of the bed and its control. The control action is based on the understanding of the physics of the stratification process within the framework of fuzzy logic. The actions suggested by the fuzzy logic controller (FLC) depend on the current degree of stratification and the existing frequency of the jig cycle. The results show that the FLC achieves efficiency in stratification with minor variations to the jig cycle.

This has created an environment where constant innovation and change have become standard operating practice. The cornerstones of these efficient operations have been formed using pneumatic backfill, creative shotcreting, specialized equipment, and highly motivated people. The results realized have served to turn interesting properties into productive operations.

Truck/shovel systems are a major form of materials handling in open-pit mines in spite of the high associated capital and operating costs. Mine management is usually faced with a decision to purchase new equipment in order to support the steadily increasing on production. These decisions involve a high degree of uncertainty with respect to future demands and technical developments. This paper describes a computer simulation model for evaluating the optimum equipment fleet in an open-pit mining operation. The system is based on a stochastic simulation program which accounts for the various mining and economic parameters. It calculates the type of equipment and the optimal number of trucks needed to meet the production targets. Two types of selection criteria: maximum rate of production or minimum cost can be applied.

Alaska is in competition with the rest of the world for exploration dollars. Providing a "seed package" of airborne geophysical data for the state's numerous mining districts encourages companies to begin more detailed exploration in more areas than they could have afforded on their own. When data are already available, the initial risk decreases for people involved in exploration. Airborne magnetic and electromagnetic data help ge¬ologists and geophysicists determine what rocks and structures are present under overburden and vegetation. These data form a fundamental package that exploration companies want before intensively exploring most regions. Individual mining companies have conducted their own geophysical surveys during the past several decades. However, these data are not available to other companies. The companies able to afford geophysical surveys have less money for ground exploration after purchasing expensive, private geophysical data. Therefore, they are not able to explore as many places as they might. Additionally, since data are not shared with other exploration companies, the proprietary surveys do not foster intercompany competition to move projects forward. Individual prospectors and small companies can not afford their own geophysical surveys. "It is more often than not the grassroots exploration efforts of the smaller operator that leads to significant discoveries," said Klaus M. Retrievability of emplaced nuclear waste from the geologic repository is a performance objective imposed by Federal Regulations. This requirement is designed to provide confidence in the Department of Energy's repository design by keeping the option of retrieval open if the engineered or natural systems prove inadequate for containment and long-term isolation of high-level nuclear waste. This paper presents a summary of current Nuclear Regulatory Commission Staff thinking on the design of the repository for retrieval, and level of retrievability demonstration that may be required during site characterization. However, this paper does not represent official U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission position on this topic.

The computer program SYGRISIS estimates number of units of equipment and operating costs on the basis of yearly production for different loading (wheel loader, LHD, digging arm loader) and transport (truck, train, conveyor belt, hoist, pump) equipment either individually or in any specified combination. Input data are yearly capacity, working time and technical data for the equipment. For the cost analysis input data are technical quantities and unit costs. SYGRISIS is written in TURBO Pascal and can be used on IBM compatible PCs with MS-DOS operating system.

A method is developed to convert a measured distribution of fracture energies to the equivalent work index. The method assumes that the energy required to grind the material from the feed size distribution to the product size distribution is equivalent to the sum of the impact energies that are required to reduce the feed material by successive single impacts to the required product size. The method was tested by measuring the fracture energy distributions for quartz and comparing the resulting calculated value of the work index with the work index for this material measured using the conventional Bond laboratory procedure.

Optimizing a production schedule with semi-mobile in-pit crushing & conveyance (IPCC) requires integrating extraction sequence, destination policy, crusher relocation, conveyor layout, and truck fleet investment decisions. An integrated stochastic optimization framework is proposed to produce long-term schedules for mining complexes using multiple semi-mobile IPCC systems. The optimizer selects the crusher locations and designs the conveyor routes from anywhere in the mines. The stochastic framework considers simulated multi-element orebody realizations and manages associated risk. A hybrid metaheuristic based on simulated annealing and evolutionary algorithm is implemented for the optimization. The method is demonstrated using an iron ore mining complex.

INTRODUCTION In ore beneficiation one of the simplest methods of mineral concentration is hand picking to remove either the ore or the waste material from a moving table or conveyor belt. Ore Sorting Equipment may be defined as equipment for mechanized picking. This type of equipment has been used successfully over the past thirty years or so to beneficiate ores of various types in particle mesh sizes between 1mm and 200mm.. at throughputs of up to 150 tonnes per hour. In general for ore sorting to be a consideration the ore and the waste material must be well liberated in the feed to the sorter (that is into practically discrete particles of ore and waste). The larger the liberation size the more likely sorting is to be cost effective. Correct selection of ore sorting equipment is most important and often special machine features are developed for an individual application. Sorter performance can be best determined by extensive testwork of representative ore at design tonnage on prototype or preferably on production model sorting machines. ADVANTAGES OF SORTING ORE The four main advantages of sorting ore are: Reduced milling cost. Reduced processing cost. Higher overall recovery. Reduced transportation costs. Reduced Milling Cost With sorters installed the milling plant following the sorter is generally smaller and hence less costly to install and operate as it only has to handle the sorter product. However this benefit is somewhat offset by the increased cost of the screening and washing plant prior to the sorter and the cost of the sorting plant itself. Reduced Processing Cost As there is less material of higher grade presented to the concentrating plant following the sorter, this plant will generally be smaller and less costly to construct and operate than a plant treating the total quantity of material. The minerals sector plays a significant role in the development of many Southern African economies. In the Southern Africa region, as in other developing regions, economic development is seen as the key contributor to poverty alleviation and social upliftment. The significant economic contribution of the minerals sector may be reduced by negative impacts on the biophysical environment and on the communities where mines operate. A critical variable in determining the net contribution of mining companies to SD is the degree of transparency with which the companies operate. Transparency is increasingly emphasised as an essential aspect of good governance and SD, but it is also difficult to establish, and is a sensitive issue for mining companies as they compete with each other for minerals sales. Transparent reporting could ensure that the interests of all stakeholders are addressed as company data is subject to informal ‘auditing’ by any interested party. This paper assesses published reports of five companies over a number of years to establish whether it is possible to make an assessment of the companies’ contribution to SD.

INTRODUCTION In June of 1992, the Bureau of Reclamation, United States Department of the Interior, awarded the contract for construction of the Sixth Water Aqueduct to the Fedrick-Redpath Joint Venture. This aqueduct, a segment of the Diamond Fork Power System, Central Utah Project, diverts water from Strawberry Reservoir into Sixth Water Creek and, when complete, will replace the old Strawberry Tunnel which was driven in the early 1900's. The new aqueduct is being built primarily as a result of deterioration of the old tunnel, but will also have a higher capacity and more positive control than the old tunnel as well as the capability to incorporate a turbine into the system at a later date. The Fedrick-Redpath Joint Venture is comprised of C.R. Fedrick, Inc. of Novato, California and J.S. Redpath Corporation of Tempe, Arizona. Fedrick, with its experience in pipelines and heavy construction, will construct the 4200 ft surface pipeline and flow control structure; Redpath, the managing partner, performed the underground work consisting of a 600 ft vertical shaft and 3300 ft tunnel. The project is located in the Uintah National Forest, approximately 20 miles east of Provo, Utah at a mean elevation of 7000 feet above sea level.

A cooperative study was undertaken in a neutral atmosphere by representatives of the environmental community, the mining industry and state government to identify and resolve environmental issues associated with base and precious metal mining before a commercial mining development is announced. The study included testing Minnesota's as-yet-untried nonferrous mining regulatory program using three hypothetical mining developments sited in environmentally sensitive areas where future mining could occur. Results include identification of critical paths for regulatory decision making, identification of particularly sensitive environmental issues that mill need continued deliberation before resolution and characterization of data necessary for environmental review and permitting decisions.

Uranium tailings at Cotter Corporation's Canon City, Colorado Mill were moved to a double-lined impoundment, but uranium and molybdenum salts remaining in the fractured bedrock underlying the old tailings ponds seeped into groundwater. Fluor Daniel GTI recommended an in situ geochemical fixation remedy, flushing Best Sulfur Products' calcium polysulfide reductant into the subsurface with clean water. Residual metals became immobile, trapped in the bedrock. Fluor Daniel GTI designed and implemented the process on ten acres with high metal concentrations. Cotter is operating and monitoring the system, which can be expanded to "hot spots." The original remediation time was estimated at less than five years.

"The Midwest is presently the focus for Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) abatement in the United States (U.S.). Most of the EPA mandated utility and municipal long term CSO abatement programs in large metro areas in the Midwest such as Cleveland, Indianapolis, Columbus, Chicago, St Louis, Akron, Fort Wayne, Louisville, Kansas City, Omaha and Pittsburg use or will use deep tunnels for storage and conveyance of CSOs. This paper will compare design methods specified and implemented for tunnel construction in Midwestern geology such as soft ground and mixed face EPBM tunnels, hard rock TBM tunnels, drill & blast tunnels, road header tunnels along with tunnel lining systems. It will also review the performance of successful CSO systems that include design life cycle, vortex and drop shaft configurations, pump stations, storage and conveyance strategies and long term operation and maintenance criteria. HISTORY and BACKGROUND Prior to development of mandated wastewater treatment plants, collecting both wastewater and storm water runoff in a single-pipe system was an efficient and economical solution. The early combined sewer systems were typically designed and sized to carry several times the average dry weather wastewater flows and not designed to handle a mixed volume of waste water and storm water during a wet weather event. Beginning in the early 1970s, federal legislation (Clean Water Act of 1972, Clean Water Act of 1977 and the Water Quality Act of 1982) changed how municipalities and industries in the U.S. were required to treat and discharge wastewater into the nation’s surface waters. They were mandated to treat wastewater at federal regulatory standards for discharge into surface waters that is safe for humans, wildlife and aquatic life. The wastewater treatment facilities that evolved were initially designed and sized to treat only the peak volume of raw wastewater flowing during dry weather. Combined sewer system control sections or relief structures were installed upstream of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) and were designed to protect WWTPs from potential damage that would be caused if peak volumes of raw wastewater mixed with storm water runoff reached and overwhelmed the WWTPs."

An extensive series of laboratory cutting tests using linear and rotary cutting machines were carried out with the objective of investigating the feasibility of achieving very high rates of penetration with TBMs in rocks of low to medium strength. These tests were performed with large diameter disc cuttrs at cutter path spacings and penetrations of up to 12 and 1.75 inches, respectively. A predictor model was also formulated to characterize rock cutting at large spacings and penetrations.

Before the introduction of computerized procedures, mineralization modeling (compilation of level maps), ultimate pit studies, ore reserve compilations, and long-range mine planning all were performed manually. In fact, much of the basis for today's computer programs was derived from manual procedures and actual experience of mining engineers and geologists.
