Heap biooxidation is an economical means to treat refractory sulfidic ores. However, air flow limitations are a major obstacle in commercialization of this technology. Geobiotics, Inc. has developed a new process for heap biooxidation of sulfide ores that renders the ore more susceptible to bacterial oxidation. In this process, air and liquid flows in the heap are greatly improved by first removing clays and other fine particles from the ore. Gold bearing sulfides are recovered from the removed fines and separately biooxidized. Column biooxidations were conducted on two refractory sulfidic ores from which the fines had been removed in order to improve air flow through the column. Gold recoveries increased from 46% to 90% for a mill grade ore and from 52% to 80% for a low grade ore after biooxidation. Fines and clays in these ores had precluded whole ore heap biooxidation from occurring. This new process addresses the most significant problem of large scale heap biooxidation.

Ore at the Magmont mine in southeast Missouri is extracted by the room-and-pillar method on two and sometimes three horizons. In 1991, a plan was formulated to recover high-grade ore in pillars using cable halts to accommodate spans of more than 27 m (90 ft ). A test area was selected and a recovery plan developed. A cooperative rock mechanics study was established by Cominco Metals, the US Bureau of Mines and the University of Utah. When initially opened in 1968, the planned production rate was about 910 kt/a (1 million stpy). Due to declining reserves, the production rate was decreased in November 1992 to 570 kt/a (630.000 stpy). Pillar recovery now accounts for about 40% to 50% of the mined tonnage. This method plays a vital role in allowing Magmont to continue to operate.

GENERAL BACKGROUND The first mention of the presence of bauxite in the mesozoic series of north-west Sardinia (fig. 1) is owed to Oosterbaan, a Dutch geologist, who carried out a geological survey of the area in the ninetten thirties. A more detailed study of the mesozoic series was attempted in the fifties by Pecorini and other, who concentrated particularly upon the stratigraphy of the bauxitic horizons, through examination of the various outcrops. In the sixties a pining company, Monte Amiata S.p.A., turned its attention to a section of the deposit outcropping near Olmedo and, considering it to be of some promise, carried out prospecting works consisting essentially of various trenches, some bore holes, a few adit and a. layout plan for the preparation and execution of trial exploitation. The results, although positive, did not convince the company's shareholders to continue the exploration. Land management planning is an important issue in all jurisdictions, especially as it relates to mineral development. These planning documents are prepared at different intervals and reflect the realities at the time that they were prepared. The Seven Questions to Sustainability developed during the North American Process of the Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development (MMSD) project are proposed for the evaluation of Land Use Plans as they relate to Mineral Development. This paper provides the background to the Seven Questions to Sustainability and how it can be applied to the evaluation of land use plans with specific reference to Resource Management Plans developed by the U. S. Department of the Interior?s Bureau of Land Management in Nevada. While this paper is focused on Nevada, the approach is broadly applicable and may be used in other planning regimes.

INTRODUCTION On April 14, 1994, the joint venture of Kiewit Construction Company and Kenny Construction Company was awarded a 76 million dollar contract for the construction of the New Hampshire Avenue Tunnels in Washington D.C. The Notice to Proceed was given on May16, 1994 and scheduled completion is September 1997. This project is one of five contracts for the Mid-City E Line as part of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA)Greenbelt Route. Once completed, the Mid-City E Line subway tunnels will connect service between the U Street-Cardozo and Fort Totten stations (See Figure 1). The New Hampshire Avenue Tunnels project consists of approximately 6800 feet of twin single track subway tunnels, three vertical shafts, associated utility work and comprehensive restoration work. Section E4b involved two methods of tunneling along the project alignment. The first method consisted of the well known soft ground open face shield driven tunnel and the second method consisted of tunnels driven using the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) . The NATM section of twin tunnels begins at the Buchanan Vent Shaft and proceeds approximately 2630 feet under Rock Creek Cemetery, including the Farragut Emergency Access Shaft and connects approximately 390 feet beyond to the existing Fort Totten running tunnels (See Figure 2). Special considerations had to be given to the portion of the tunnel alignment which passed beneath Rock Creek Cemetery. The analyses and subsequent selection of the tunnel support system were based on anticipated geological conditions and the sensitive tunnel alignment. The New Hampshire Avenue Tunnels project was the second soft ground NATM project in Washington D.C. The first, by no coincidence, was completed at the adjacent Fort Totten Station and Running Tunnels Project by Mergentime/Hochtief, AJV. Currently, on a nearby WMATA jobsite, the J.F. Shea Construction Company has started a third NATM soft ground tunnel. The depressed economic condition resulting from normal cyclic behavior, a more fundamental structural alteration, or both, is a mandate for change within the mining industry. Although several strategies for change have been proposed, the option of applying high technology processes to this smokestack industry offers the greatest opportunity for regaining global competitiveness and a new vitality. Research and development to secure new technologies require a corporate commitment for substantive change, a tech¬nologically enlightened management, a well¬funded and stable science and engineering effort, and a dedicated and motivated technical team--features in short supply in the mining industry today. However, an alternative to in-house development of frontier technologies is available to this beleagured industry through entrepreneurial, high-tech companies. These entities, with their dedicated focus toward product development, motivated and streamlined teams, high productivity and efficiency, and low costs offer a unique opportunity for large corporations to obtain high-tech products and services. These commodities are available through traditional commercial channels and an array of creative business arrangements. The latter offers notable benefits to large companies including windows on frontier technologies and mitigation of risk. Likewise, entrepreneurial companies profit through manufacturing and marketing relationships and an expanded financial base.

A small underground mine in northern Idaho was used as an experimental facility for studying the role of water in the analysis of mine-opening stability. Laboratory test data, borehole measurements and geological mapping assisted in the construction of a coupled finite element model of the rock mass. The model was used to make quantitative estimates of rock stress, strain and displacement changes and to make estimates of the water pressure and flow velocity changes that occurred during historical mining. Stope cuts and wet fills were included in the analysis. The stability of the crown pillars between stopes was of particular interest. The relatively low effective stress and high rock-mass strength showed that water pressure changes were of no great consequence, which is in agreement with experience. The computational tools used in the analysis may be applied to other wet mines with appropriate changes to site-specific data.

The plant Is then built to the detailed criteria and performance acceptance tested by the owner to see if the as-built mill meets the criteria, This performance testing is critical to the owner; the test must be systematic with sample collection coordinated throughout the plant. The Mining design system is a CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) software and was developed as designer-oriented, interactive mode software to perform geological and mining design calculation and graphics. To perform geology and mining design, the deposit model files created by the software "Deposit Modelling System", are transferred to the environment of graphics support software, then a specially developed drafting submodule can be selected to proceed to interactive graphics design. If it is necessary to calculate the grade and quantity of a particular part of the ore-body, another submodule will be called and run. The resulting file is 'transferred back, and the recalculation program takes the data from the file and refers to the deposit model file to create a summary reserve report: The minimum hardware configuration of the system are IBM-AT Basic work station with high resolution graphic monitor and peripherals needed are digitizer, plotter, printer.

El Teniente Mine of Codelco-Chile, located at Los Andes Range of Mountains, 90 kilometers South far from Santiago, the capital city, has been exploited for more than 90 years, with over 1000 million tonnes of copper ore extraction. No doubt, this particular record, has been possible to achieve due to an efficient combination of human and technological efforts in the exploitation of one of the biggest ore deposits of the world. Throughout times, the exploitation has evolved from a mainly manual one to a highly mechanized exploitation. Notwithstanding, different and several geomechanical problems that occurred in one of its areas, increased the risks to personnel that should normally operate large equipments in its working face. This last condition, forced El Teniente mine to design and develop systems and technologies that would allow the use of tele-operated LHD, picking hammers and drilling equipment (jumbos) from a safe zone. Currently, El Teniente Mine is using in its extractive works equipment such as LHD, picking hammers, and drilling Jumbos, that can be manually or teleoperated commanded from a Central Control Room located one kilometer away from the production area. In general, a new technological era has been opened in the mining exploitation at El Teniente: the exploitation era with telecommanded robots.

This paper will discuss the application of a continuous miner using a fixed drum milling type cutting head for the underground mining of hard rock and salt ores. Continuous mining machines of the ripper chain cutting head, oscillating milling cutting head and boring arm designs have been used in rock and salt applications with various degrees of success. The large boring arm miners have been successful in potash, trona and salt, but they have not been successful in mining rock materials like iron ore. The main method used in underground mining rock materials is the conventional drilling and blasting the ore from the solid. This is particularly true for the harder, more abrasive copper and iron bearing ores. The softer salt based ores of potash, trona and rock salt can use several underground mining methods depending on seam conditions. Several of these methods use underground coal mining equipment that has been extensively redesigned to adapt it for use in mining noncoal materials. Conventional mining methods employ the use of a universal cutting machine to undercut or topcut the ore body before face drilling and blasting takes place to produce a smooth parting of the ore. The boring arm continuous miner is widely used in underground mining of potash and trona ores. It produces a tunnel with a smooth semicircular contour which results in good rib and roof stability. The ripper chain continuous miner is also widely used in mining the salt based ores of potash, trona and rock salt. They are used more frequently in Europe than in the United States and Canada. This paper reports on some recent work in which several schemes were developed to model jointed rock under high stress, with particular reference to the phenomenon of "block motion" observed during dynamic loading of underground structures. Three approaches were made, corresponding to an increasing relative importance of internal block deformations as compared to rigid block movements. The first one uses distinct element method and assumes internally rigid blocks, which can break, repeatedly, whenever an empirical crack criterion is met. In the second approach each block is allowed three degrees of freedom to deform internally. The third approach, still in the development stage, permits arbitrary deformation of all blocks, which are internally decomposed into finite-difference zones and automatically rezoned during slip to preserve the calculation accuracy on joints. The last two schemes allow arbitrary constitutive relations for the intact rock, and all three schemes permit the geometrical arrangement of joints to be arbitrarily complex, in contrast to normal Lagrange, finite-difference programs, which are unsuited to model discontinua.

The year 1988 for the minerals indus¬try was one of favorable worldwide economic conditions for continued, rationally constrained growth. There was continued improvement in relations between market economy nations and the Soviet Union and China. The "shooting war" between Iran and Iraq ended. Soviet troops withdrew from Afghanistan. And conditions were generally favorable for economic growth in developed market economy countries. These favorable conditions were darkened only somewhat by the continuing foreign debt crises discernible in some major mineral producing developing market economy countries. However, there were situations developing that became major headlines in the late spring - situations that may have pronounced effects in 1989. The most significant event is the muddled situation in China. There is a good chance of worsening international relations and consequent restraint of development projects that could prove beneficial to China and her international partners. Of only slightly lesser evident significance was the death of Ruhollah Khomeini in Iran. This could lead to a variety of paths for the new Iranian leaders. Continued outbreaks of ethnic unrest in the Soviet Union clearly presented problems to the Gorbachev regime. This unrest has raised questions of how far the doctrines of "glasnost" and "peristroika" would be extended, including extensions into the minerals field. Another area of unrest is Panama with its tainted election and the Western Hemisphere's obvious dissatisfaction with the Noreiga regime. While not a direct threat to any major mineral industry enterprise, the political situation certainly presents a potential threat to the Panama Canal. Several controlled recirculation systems are in operation wor1dwide. As an unconventional technique of ventilation the implementation of such a system requires particular safety conditions and a well-founded set of feasibility factors and parameters. On the other hand, many mines in Romania are facing problemms in meeting the growing ventilation demands, so that controlled air recirculation could give an answer. The present paper presents the results of the work in this field, based on a detailed theoretical approach. Parameters wich must to be taken into account were identified and analysed, numerical simulation are carried out and an experimental test-scale model is presented.

The characteristics of frothers can often be determined by the proper selection of various chemical groups. There are three basic groups utilized in the application of frothers. These are alcohols, polyglycol ethers, and polyglycols. Some of the chemical groups are separated in subgroups. Each chemical group provides particular characteristics which affect load support, bubble diameter, water retention, air dispersion, and kinetics of froth formation. These chemical groups may be preblended in various percentages to optimize frother characteristics for a particular ore deposit.

There is general agreement among those involved in occupational and public health that work-related diseases are under-diagnosed and under-reported. Highmark is particularly well positioned to carry out industry health analysis as it provides medical insurance for approximately three quarters of the insured population of Western Pennsylvania including some of the areas largest employers. The purpose of this study is to gain a more accurate understanding of the mining industry rates of respiratory diseases that maybe occupationally related and identify those inflated respiratory disease and hearing loss rates. Conditions examined included COPD, asthma, and pneumoconiosis.

Flotation of several copper and lead-zinc ores has been carried out with mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) as promoter. The results of laboratgory batch flotation tests have been compared with those obtained when using more common collectors like xanthates or dithiophosphates. It generally appears that MBT is an effective collector of all the sulfides, including pyrite, but that high selectivity is rather difficult to attain, except for gangue drop-out. Some kinetic tests have been performed to check the froth production rate by MBT as compared to other collectors.
