When a takeup weight is offset to the side of a conveyor, a wire rope is commonly routed from the takeup weight through a series of sheaves to the takeup carriage. The friction developed from a series of wire rope sheaves can effect the actual belt tension at the make up carriage. Through real-mime testing the actual tension on a makeup carriage was recorded with data acquisition using an internally strain-gauged turnbuckle. The wire rope used to transfer the makeup weight to the makeup carriage was routed through a series of lubricated bronzed bushed sheaves. The tension on the makeup carriage was found to be as much as 26% higher than the weight of the makeup due to the friction in the sheaves. A detailed discussion of the testing and results will be made.

Bucketline dredges are machines for excavating large relatively unconsolidated or weakly consolidated materials from below water level. They are at the upper end of the capital cost range and the lower end of the operating cost range for placer mining machines and have digging capacities, typically, of from 100 cubic yards of bank measure material per operating hour for a shallow digging dredge carrying 2 cubic foot buckets to 1500 cubic yards per hour for a large deep digging dredge with 33 cubic foot buckets. Bucketline dredges used in the mining industry have their mineral processing plants mounted aboard the digging hull. Since dredges are high capital cost items, they require large ore reserves, typically at least ten years. Because of their high capital cost they are usually operated around the clock and for as many months of the year as weather conditions will permit. Typically a well run dredge operating year round would be expected to operate for 600 hours per month. Dredges operated in cold climates cannot operate when the weather freezes the dredge pond or the gravels, and dredges operating at sea cannot operate when high waves might batter the digging ladder against the bottom or upset the mineral extraction process.

The flow of air through a bare rock, underground airway is affected by the size and frequency of the micro- and macro-asperities of the rough surface. The focus of this study is to characterize this roughness using the coefficient of friction, the friction factor and the fractal dimension. The rough surfaces were identified by two sets of 177 and 78 transverse profiles measured by a laser profiler along the length of an underground airway at the Sunshine Mine, Idaho. Based on the measurements, the friction factor was estimated from Atkinson's equation and the coefficient of friction from the Moody diagram, and power series and variography were used for computing a fractal dimension for the airway surface. Significant conclusions are reached relating the effect of error in the measurement of cross-sectional and rubbing surface areas of a drift, on the estimated friction factor for the airway. The potential role of the fractal dimension as an alternative to the friction factor for characterizing the roughness of a mine airway is discussed.

A technique was developed to determine the fraction of air recirculated from the scrubber exhaust toward the face and the fraction of gas captured by the scrubber. To determine these two values, a series of tests was required. In the first test, gas was released at the face area and concentrations measured at the scrubber exhaust. In the second test, gas was released directly into the scrubber with concentrations again measured in the scrubber exhaust. The simultaneous solution of two independent flow expressions gave values of recirculation and scrubber capture. A series of tests was conducted with various combinations of scrubber flow, curtain flow, setback distance, and machine location. Statistical analyses then were conducted to determine those factors which influenced the levels of scrubber recirculation and scrubber capture in a deep cut. INTRODUCTION As cutting depths increase, the trend is toward the use of blowing face ventilation systems. With these ventilation systems, the potential exists for recirculation between the scrubber exhaust and the intake air stream. One concern is that methane gas, having been removed from the face area, is subsequently recirculated back into the intake airflow. Under these conditions, methane-laden air could be substituted for fresh intake air, leading to increased methane concentrations at the face. There is currently no standard for recirculation between the scrubber and intake airflows. The implied understanding of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) is, and has always been, that any recirculation of ventilation air is unacceptable. To minimize recirculation potential, MSHA suggests that operators maintain scrubber and curtain flows within 0.47 m3/sec (1000 cfm) of each other. Given that recirculation may occur in some circumstances, the question arises as to how much recirculation constitutes a hazard for the face workers. Unfortunately, there is currently insufficient information to answer this. Emphasis must instead be placed on means to quantify the amount of recirculation between the scrubber and face area. Methods must also be examined to control this phenomenon. This paper presents a technique for quantifying recirculation and scrubber capture levels in a blowing face ventilation system. Several ventilation parameters are investigated to determine their effects on these levels. DEVELOPMENT OF RECIRCULATION EXPRESSIONS One way to measure airflow quantities at a point near the face would be to measure the gas flow rate Qgas, and gas concentration c at that location. The airflow Qair, would be simply the ratio of these two values, Qair, = Qgas/c. Although gas concentration values, c, can be obtained easily with existing gas monitoring equipment, it is more difficult to obtain gas flow readings, Qgas, at specific locations. To obtain these values of Qgas, another method was needed. Previous work in this area was conducted by Kissell and Bielicki (1975). However, the calculations in their model assumed a constant gas concentration in the region around the continuous miner. In a deep cut, it is questionable that gas concentrations would remain constant or uniform around the mining machine. The technique presented here does not rely on this assumption. It instead assumes that the gas concentration in the scrubber exhaust remains constant. A quantity of gas released at the cutting face either flows into the scrubber inlets or bypasses the inlets and flows around the off-curtain side (in this example, the right side) of the continuous miner (Figure 1). In order to continue improving the quality of telecommunication services to meet the expectations of the people and to increase reliability in the case of emergency such as disasters, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation (NTT) is now constructing cable tunnels which connect main urban telephone offices. However, almost all the large cities in Japan are built in river deltas, so that their chief underground features are low strength fluvial deposit and a high ground water level. In this saturated soft ground, the ground surface at an installation site has occasionally subsided through deep excavations for cable tunneling construction. As these settlements have sometimes caused accidents, especially in densely populated large cities, NTT has made much effort to avoid such accidents. These accidents have occured mainly in flexible sheeting due to its inward movement. Therefore, after the investigation into forecast method of sheeting deflection with accuracy, NTT has reserched a system which forecasts ground surface settlements. This paper describes an outline of the ground settlement forecast system and practical example on the site.

The dimensions and shape of both airborne and bulk amphibole-asbestos fibers are different from those of cleavage fragments of the amphiboles. These differences are related to the mineralogical properties unique to the habit of asbestos. These properties include the fibrillar structure, small fibrill widths and distinctive crystallographic faces of fibrills. Criteria for distinguishing amphibole cleavage fragments from amphibole-asbestos include mineralogical proper-ties observable in bulk samples and the dimensions of particles collected on air filters.

The work reported herein compares the support characteristics of two different types of roof truss subjected to the same force in the horizontal tension member. The major differences between the two trusses are in the sequence of tensioning the horizontal and inclined members and in the design of the loading brackets. A photoelastic model was used to compare stresses at points along the roof of the mine opening and at the junction of the roof surface and the rib. The effects of simulated subsidence on stress in the roof and on tension in the horizontal member were analyzed. Results indicate that there are significant differences in the overall support characteristics of the two trusses. Conclusions are drawn relative to which type of roof truss provides the most favorable support if the horizontal members are tensioned equally.

If the primary purpose of a control system is to assure a fixed-quality product at maximum yield, the real issue involved in control of the fine coal cleaning circuit in a plant is to demonstrate that control is technically feasible and economically beneficial . This paper suggests that it is not easy to do so in most cases. Fine coal, defined here as the 28 mesh x 0 fraction of the plant feed, is generally cleaned using a combination of hydrocyclones and flotation. Both of these processes are relatively insensitive to changes in operating variables. Further, the fines fraction general 1 y forms no more than 20% of the plant feed and, at times, is as low as 10%. The instruments to measure flow rates, densities, and product qua1ity (ash, sulfur, etc.) are not sufficiently accurate to allow effective responses to changing state variables and product quality. It is sufficient to run the fine coal circuits at maximum recovery, and the control of product quality and optimization of yield should be achieved by controlling the coarse coal circuits and measuring the quality of the entire clean coal leaving the plant. This contention is made with particular reference to U.S. plants cleaning coal for the utility industry and should be viewed in this context only. It is explicitly admitted that this strategy is mathematically non-optimal in the sense that all size fractions are not necessarily cleaned at equal elementary ash, and would result in a loss of yield. However, under the conditions of conventional coal cleaning practice, this is a sensible approach.

Engineering programs usually do not provide sufficient opportunities for students to develop written communication skills. The responsibility for developing those skills is frequently delegated to the humanities faculty, who in a single technical writing course are supposed to transform engineering students into proficient communicators. A general template which was developed for report writing in our senior level capstone design courses is discussed. Students have improved their writing skills by using the template. The writing assignments have provided the students the opportunity to write and revise more technical reports that communicate their design.

The formation of petroleum is normally thought of as a geologically lengthy process, involving the accumulation of organic matter, its gradual burial, diagenetic breakdown via geochemical reactions, maturation, heating within a 75-150'C "oil window" induced by normal geothermal gradients in the subsiding basin, and slow product migration into structural traps (Tissot and Welte, 1984, Hunt, 1979). The entire process can take millions of years and, indeed, most oil reservoirs probably formed in this manner. How-ever, today in sedimented, submarine rift basins (Fig. 1), Cl to >C40 hydrocarbons with the chemical and physical properties of crude oil are forming in demonstrably much shorter time by rapid thermal maturation of immature organic matter in hydrothermal regimes that are unusually high for sedimentary basins (Brault and Simoneit, 1988a, b; Didyk and Simoneit, 1988; Kawka and Simoneit, 1987; Peter et al., 1988; Simoneit, 1983; 1984; 1985a,b; 1988; Simoneit et al., 1984; 1987; 1988).

The 150 MWe circulating fluidized bed (CFB) power plant described in this paper is the product of recent Bechtel experience in the industrial power and steam market, where the economic feasibility of fluidized bed projects has been proven. The inherent ability of CFB boilers to burn low grade fuels makes it possible to also burn low ranking coals or coal wastes, including anthracite culm, coal mine rejects, and coal wash plant waste slurry. The impact of fuel characteristics on plant design is addressed. This includes solids handling, steam generation, sulfur capture, and auxiliary load requirements.

The authors benchmarked the integrated finite-volume code MULTIFLO against the analytical solution of Philip et al. (1989) for cylindrical underground openings. They found that the numerical simulation of dripping threshold flux was consistently higher than the analytical solution for rectangular and unstructured grids. The magnitude of this error was proportional to the alpha parameter characterizing capillarity. This error may bias estimates of seepage into drifts for repository performance towards nonconservatism.

The effects of harmonic resonance between the supply impedance and power factor correction capacitors on systems with large harmonic sources, such as mine winders, are well known. The similar effects of resonance with cable capacitance are not commonly encountered and, hence, are not always considered in the design of medium-voltage networks. This article considers some of the aspects of resonance between the supply impedance and the cable capacitance and presents one successful approach to solving the problem.

Sustainability is typically understood as having three interrelated dimensions-environmental, economic, and social. However, far less attention has been paid to social sustainability than to the other two forms. The paper argues that one of the difficulties in giving substance to the concept of social sustainability is that it is inherently value-dependent and has major conceptual, definitional and therefore measurement issues. This is particularly the case in complex crosscultural environments such as those found in Australian mine hinterlands with significant Aboriginal populations. Nonetheless, a concept of social sustainability can provide an important counter to the usual focus on environmental and economic sustainability, and can productively guide the minerals industry in its engagement with the Aboriginal people of mine hinterlands. The paper outlines a set of principles for socially sustainable communities, and proposes means by which these principles can be implemented. It further suggests that these principles may have broader applicability than just in the case of Aboriginal people.

Mineral liberations that would be obtained by grinding an ore to a specific size can be predicted by analyzing unbroken ore pieces, and mineral liberations in ground ores and mill products can be determined directly by image analysis. Predictions of mineral liberations are made by measuring size distributions and textures of mineral grains by image analysis and using liberation models. Ground ores and mill products are analyzed to determine the proportion of mineral that is liberated, and the data are used to evaluate mineral behavior during mineral beneficiation. The liberation data for minerals in a suite of mill products from a circuit are processed by a materials balancing technique to calculate recoveries of minerals in different types of particles throughout the circuit. The liberation-materials balance data define mineral recoveries; define the behavior of an ore in a concentrator, pilot plant or bench test: and indicate whether recovery improvements are possible and/or feasible.

In spite of the progress made by geostatistical theory over the years, evaluation of low grade open pit gold deposits continues to be challenging. Many Carlin type deposits are modelled from exploration drilling spaced on 10C foot centers. From these drill holes, 50 by 50 by 20 foot blocks containing about 4000 tons of material are estimated. The block size is a compromise between being large enough for a good geostatistical estimation and being small enough for practical pit limit analysis and mine planning. Most of these gold deposits are highly variable and include ore and waste zones that are too small to be properly defined from exploration drilling information. Because of this, selective mining is controlled by sampling closely spaced blast holes where the density can be as high as 50 blast holes per exploration drill hole intercept. Figure 1 illustrates an example of the ore/waste contact definition before and after blast hole sampling. With exploration information only, a tentative ore/waste contact can be drawn between the exploration blocks.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted copper exchange capacity (CuEC) tests for six common clays under simulated in situ leaching conditions. Regression equations were obtained from the data expressing the CuEC as a function of Cu concentration, pH, and temperature. Further testing resulted in regression equations expressing CuEC's of Na and Ca montmorillonites and attapulgite as a function of Cu concentration, pH, and the concentration of metal ions which compete with Cu for exchange sites. Using these equations, an analysis was made of the impact each clay could have on overall copper recovery. The results suggest that Ca and Na montmorillonite clays could have a major impact on Cu recovery and that attapulgite and illite clays could have a smaller, but still significant, impact. Kaolinite and ripidolite clays pose little threat to loss of copper from in situ leaching solutions. Copper losses are decreased by the presence of competing ions, and A1 and Mg have the largest impact of those ions normally present in Cu leaching solutions.
