Stemming plugs are used as an accessory in drilling and blasting industry. They supplement conventional stemming material (i.e. drill cutting) with retention of gases in the drill hole that result in better fragmentation of rock and improved explosive utilization. Better fragmentation and explosive utilization along with economic benefits enhance efficacy of the project. Incorporation of stemming plugs in drilling and blasting industry is in exercise for about thirty years. The efficiency of stemming plugs is a key factor in their rising induction in mining industry. Different studies have been conducted on the economic viability of these plugs. The focus of this paper is the selection of stemming plugs for a bench blasting operation and the examination of blasting operation efficiency based on ergonomics and human factors. Three types of stemming plugs were evaluated during multiple blasts at a limestone quarry. Their performance was evaluated using split desktop software. Based on the human factors plastic molded stemming plug (stemming plug-1) was found to be the best among all selected plugs. INTRODUCTION Surface mines and quarrying operations heavily depend on bench blasting to achieve high volumetric targets and production demands. Use of explosives is the most economic method adopted for rock breakage and movement. Extensive research had been performed to enhance explosives energy utilization. This include changing the drilling pattern, application of air decks, stemming plugs, and use of other supportive devices. Optimization of explosive energy has been a major concern in those mines that rely on drilling and blasting operation to carry out main production. Due to continually increasing cost, efficient mining demands, and associated hazards of using explosives, it is necessary to utilize explosives at their best. Efficiency of a blasting operation is generally evaluated by the fragmentation size. From post blast conditions at blasting site to efficiency of processing plant, anything can be affected due to improper blast resulting in bad fragmentation. Better fragmentation is necessity for better operation of the system along with consideration of the safety of operation, environmental issues and related costs. For developing a blast design, an engineer should always attempt to minimize the cost of operation without compromising with acceptable technical and safety necessities [1]. Blast performance is dependent on many different factors associated with the process. These factors have been gauged as blast geometry, explosive specification, and rock mass properties [2]. Similarly, in 2013 Mohammad et al. concluded that fragmentation dynamics depends on blast hole diameter, primer, spacing, stemming, burden, and delay timing for blasting operation [1]. At the work site where this study was performed, blast holes were filled by drill cuttings and muds to help in confining gases. In a blast hole, gas confinement helps in better rock fragmentation along with reduced flyrocks. This practice is most common in many countries including Pakistan. Due to lack of homogenized particle size, the effectiveness of confinement is variable and majorly based on the size of stemming. Extremely small sized drill cuttings often result in hole blow out along with flyrocks from the collar. This improper blast energy will result in poor blast, bad impacts on environment, and reduced operational efficiency. In addition to the stemming material, the length of stemming is also a prime consideration. The decrease in stemming length will increase the quantity of explosive in the blast hole and an increase in stemming material generally improves stemming performance.

In previous work at Virginia Tech, a population balance-model describing the simultaneous processes of size reduction and mineral liberation has been developed. Experimental verification of this model, however, has been limited to a binary mineral system containing only one composite particle class. When considering multiple classes of composite particles, estimation of model parameters becomes much more difficult. In the present work, a procedure for estimating model parameters for a multiple-composite- class model has been developed. Emphasis is placed on direct experimental determination of these parameters. The physical significance of the breakage rate function and the liberation function in characterizing the liberation process is also discussed.

Over 10 million tourists have visited Vietnam in 2016. Travel and tourism accounted for 9.3% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2014. At the same time, as with many other resource-rich developing countries, Vietnam has been developing its extractive resources sector as a means of promoting the country’s social and economic development. In 2015, mining was the third largest contributor to GDP, and accounted for 8% of Vietnam’s gross domestic product. Vietnam is the third largest mineral producer in SE Asia. Although it produces zinc, nickel, bauxite, and manganese, coal mining is its most developed sector. The country has over two hundred coal mines, and total reserves of approximately 6 billion tons. Quang Nihn Province, where the World Heritage Site Ha Long Bay is located, is a very important tourism destination. It is also a coal-rich region where mining extraction and processing have been active since the early 20th century. Vietnam is signatory of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The country is aware of the importance and the challenges involved in managing the extractive sector in a way that does not undermine its tourism industry and yet that contributes to the country’s sustainable development. To this end Vietnam is taking actions towards implementing more advanced coal-mining extraction and processing techniques. The country is furthermore promoting a responsible mining sector, and is investing in programs that foster environmental protection and sustainable tourism. This paper examines the case of the Ha Long Bay region and the project involved in relocating the Hong Gai coal preparatory factory from a seafront area to a mountainside area. This paper provides a preliminary review of the initiatives adopted by the government of Vietnam to address the existing challenges that have resulted from a focus on promoting the country’s socio-economic development through the exploration of its rich coal endowment. Furthermore, it also describes Vietnam’s legal and policy frameworks. In conclusion this study identified that Vietnam has drafted a National Action Plan to implement the Sustainable Development Goals. The country is also taking an integrated approach to implementing the SDGs agenda and that it is assigning responsibility to a variety of ministries to achieve SDGs’ specific targets. Furthermore the country is changing policies and the legal framework in order to facilitating the execution of the work of agencies that are responsible for implementation, regulation and enforcement. In this respect, the approval of the National Action Plan on Sustainable Development Goals is another important step in that direction. While the decision of supplying its internal market with high quality coal helps minimize negative environmental impacts in Vietnam, exporting low quality coal to other countries does not help resolve the problem of CO2 emissions globally. With respect to the 2030 Agenda, this may be considered a temporary solution since to achieve the SDG goals, Vietnam will have to consider other sources of cleaner energy in order to align with the Sustainable Development Goals # 7 on affordable and clean energy.

INTRODUCTION The process of froth flotation as a means of upgrading the quality of coal by removing water and/or ash and/or pyrite has been receiving increasing attention since the 1960's by the world-wide coal industry. Historically, coal preparation practice has involved the use of primarily gravity based separation techniques, screening, and/or water washing in removing the larger fragments of inert material from coarse raw feed coal. The preparation, handling, and cleaning of raw coal finer than 500 micrometers was deliberately avoided. Most often the fine coal that was produced would be judiciously incorporated into the bulk of the larger sized cleaned coal product or simply discarded. Since the 1960's and accelerating in the 19701s, the desirability of performing some type of coal cleaning or upgrading on the finer raw coal feed materials has been increasing. There are several apparent industrial incentives for implementing fine coal ((500 urn) processing alternatives including the gradually increasing value of the normally lost fine coal product; the additional amounts of fine coal being produced due to changes in mining techniques; the need to appropriately dewater and upgrade fine coal streams in order to meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations on water quality. storage of fines, etc.; the increasing need to lower undesired sulfur and ash contents in some coal end-use applications; and the increasing development of speciality coal use processes that require inherently finer and cleaner coal particles such as in gasification, liquefaction, fuel injection, etc. Looking at the over 70 years of mineral oriented fine particle separation successes at the industrial level, the use of froth flotation in fine coal would also seem to be a natural process to utilize at the industrial level. In the world of strictly mineral processing technology and, more importantly in the world of mineral commodity economics, there are clearly a number of advantages to using froth flotation that are well documented and universally accepted. These include: the relatively low capital and space requirements required when compared to other process options available to upgrade minerals; the extreme flexibility inherent to the froth flotation process both with regard to throughput and differences in raw feed characteristics; the general availability of a wide range of equipment sizes and reliable suppliers of equipment; and the general availability of appropriate and relatively cheap chemicals that are the major driving forces behind mineral flotation. Just how has the implementation of froth flotation fared in coal upgrading over the last 20 years? It is towards answering this question that this paper will be oriented. As such, the discussion will be somewhat philosophical. The comments offered are based on the personal experiences of this author who has worked in the basic side of inventing new flotation chemistry and flotation analysis techniques with the major overriding goal of implementing this new technology successfully at the industrial level in both coal and mineral flotation throughout much of the world. This paper is not intended to be a complete reference to all published scientific work on the subject of industrial froth flotation of coal. As a brief background to what will be expanded upon in this paper, the author would like to offer the following summary comments: 1) the industrial practice of fine coal froth flotation is qualitatively similar but quantitatively different than industrial mineral froth flotation when viewed from either research considerations, operating viewpoints or economic evaluation criteria; 2) it is clearly possible to invent and/or develop new technology (such as new chemistry and/or equipment) that can do statistically better than current plant practice in well-controlled tests in either coal or mineral flotation circuits; 3) there is so much inherent variability to the raw feed coal streams and other operating parameters that even if there is a documented technical incentive to implement some new piece of technology, the people, instrumentation and control methodology required are often simply not available or not economic unless the potential payoff is quite large.

A clear and accurate knowledge of the status of ventilation in an underground mine is essential to continuing safe operation. In a small mine with a few working faces, the problem is simple and can easily be solved by choosing the appropriate fan. In larger, more complex mines the problem of supplying the working faces with fresh air is a problem beyond the scope of 'finger in the wind' analysis. In today's climate of stiffer government regulation and mining company concern for the safety of workers, computer programs which analyze ventilation networks are helping mining companies meet the standards. The development of computer programs for ventilation network analysis is summarized. Early programs were developed at universities or government agencies and required large expensive computers. As computers have become smaller and less expensive, the development or revision of programs for micro computers has become more available. Prices have lowered to the point of affordability even for medium and small companies. A list of ventilation network analysis programs is provided along with a summary of capabilities, costs, and hardware requirements for each program.

The application of Bacterial Oxidation as a pretreatment step for the extraction of gold from the Olympias refractory pyrite concentrate is described. A wide review of Bio-oxidation is presented focusing on the current process developments and commercial applications relevant to the treatment of gold bearing sulphide ores and concentrates. Preliminary batch and semi- continuous tests on the Olympas concentrate indicated that with Bacterial Oxidation quantitative gold liberation may be achieved. fie effect of such parameters as pH, Eh, temperature, particle size, operating pulp density and retention time on the extent of sulphur oxidation and subsequent gold extraction by conventional cyanidation are also examined. Finally, a preliminary evaluation of Bacterial Oxidation as a potential process alternative for the treatment of the Olympias concentrate is presented.

Two years ago, about the only US mining ventures that could turn even marginal profits were precious metals. In 1986, the price of gold dramatically increased, as did earnings from precious metals, mostly gold mines. First quarter results for 1987 show that gold will again be the most profitable type of mining in the US. All this money being made in gold resulted in many new mines being opened and hundreds of old workings being re-evaluated. The Society of Mining Engineers has put together a technical program to aid in developing precious metals mines. Small Mines Development in Precious Metals will take place Aug. 30-Sept. 2, 1987 at Bally's Hotel, Reno, NV. Problems facing the small miner The small miner has found and started most of the productive mines in the world, says Alfred G. Hoyl, of Coal Fuels Corp., Rollinsville, CO. Hoyl will state his case for small mines development in the opening session of the program. He will make the point that government regulations must never restrict the small mine or miner. And the mining industry must be careful not to crowd out the independent miner. "To restrict small mining is to say to our young men and women entering the mineral industry `There is no place for you as an independent.' Small is a relative term and we must never feel that starting small will restrict our possibilities of becoming big." In the same session, David J. Starbuck, Starbuck Minerals Management, Mayer, AZ will take a look at why smaller precious metals mines are profitable. Mining companies have changed their perspective on reworking previously mined properties. They are looking at abandoned properties in older mining districts. The attitude is that smaller operations in these districts can be profitable with the present economic climate, more advanced technology, and better management. Small, independent mining companies may not have the same resources to draw from as the majors. But there are affordable technologies available that fit into the independents' budget. Betty Gibbs, of Gibbs Associates, Boulder, Co will explain how a personal computer can help a small operation to analyze data more effectively and respond quickly to changing conditions. Scenarios will be developed that will describe how PCs can be incorporated into all phases of an operation. Financial institutions are becoming more willing to consider venture capital for small precious metals mines, according to Stanley Dempsey, Denver Mining Finance Co., Denver, CO. This may be in the form of equity or debt, he says, but they want to receive assurances of the quality of the resource. And they will ask about the ore reserves. Next, the potential lender will want to know about the mining method and en¬vironmental regulations. Dempsey will discuss these requirements. Once a high grade gold mineralization is located and reserves proven, it must be evaluated to determine which recovery process is best suited for this deposit. Robert Martinez, Amselco Minerals, Ely, NV will evaluate processes for such a deposit located in Mexico. Heap leaching, vat leaching, and a carbon-in-pulp circuit are all viable options, he says. This chapter deals with the use of industrial minerals in insulating materials used to control our thermal and acoustical environment. There are numerous products on the market used for thermal and acoustical insulation; they consume substantial quantities of a variety of industrial minerals. Following is a brief review of the theory and function of insulating materials. Acoustics is the science of sound, and architectural acoustics deals with sound in buildings. If this definition is broadened to include transportation vehicles, it is this end use for which acoustical insulations are primarily manufactured. Sound is defined as the auditory sensation in the ear, or the disturbance in a medium which causes this sensation. Acoustical insulation is used to reduce or eliminate noise, defined as unwanted sound. Noise control may be accomplished by the reduction of sound radiation at the source, by utilizing sound reducing construction methods such as staggered studs, etc., to control sound transmission, or by using sound absorbing material on walls, ceilings, and floors (Rossing, 1985). Acoustical insulation functions by absorbing the energy in sound waves in a porous material. As the sound waves penetrate the pores, they are dissipated by reducing the amplitude of vibration of the air molecules by contact with the pore walls, with subsequent conversion of the sound energy to heat energy. Acoustical insulation is generally highly porous, 1.3 cm or greater in thickness, and has interconnected pores. Acoustical insulating materials include fibrous vegetable or mineral matter and cellular organic and inorganic material, such as natural or manufactured foams (Sabine and Moulder, 1979). Acoustical materials are most commonly porous boards and tiles, which are often composite materials with perforated facing. Roof insulation board and lightweight concrete can also contribute to the absorption of noise. Thermal insulation is defined as material used to control the flow of heat. It may be used for heat control from low cryogenic temperatures (below -100°C) to in excess of 2 200°C for applications such as ablative shields for spacecraft. Heat transfer occurs by conduction, convection, or radiation. Conduction is the transfer of heat without the movement of the conducting medium, as through a metal. Heat convection through a liquid or gas takes place by movement of the medium. Forced convection is the basis for heating and cooling equipment, utilizing pumps or blowers to transfer the thermally conditioned fluid. Free or natural convection occurs due to density differences in the fluid. Radiation is the transfer of energy in space (Eckert, 1985). Conduction of heat through a solid is reduced by insulating the body with foams, or fibrous or small celled granular material. Heat transfer through a gas (convection) is controlled by creating many small pores which inhibit the movement of the fluid, substituting a gas of low thermal conductivity, or evacuating the space. Heat radiation can be reduced by the use of materials that reflect or absorb the energy (Glaser, 1967). Thermal insulating materials may be vegetable or mineral fibers, organic or inorganic particles, or foams with small pores, generally used to form a low density thermal barrier. They may be blocks, poured lightweight cementitious materials, bricks, etc.

INTRODUCTION For overland conveyors of several kilometres length and as well as wide for conveyors designed for high mass flows, the cost for the conveyor belting share is 40% to 50% of the invested cost 173. The German Standard DIN 22101 is used for calculation and dimensioning of - conveyor belts and belt conveyor components. Developments in rubber technology and conveyor belt design required a revision of the standard released in 1982 121, which was published in August 2001 131. New research results and publications 16-9, 13-15] led to a better understanding of the material behaviour and their influences on conveyor belts. Test and calculation methods have been established to determine the most important parameters which are related to the performance of a conveyor belt line. These parameters are • The running resistance of the idlers • The indentation resistance of the belt • The dynamic splice efficiency • The distribution of belt load in the splices, transition zones and on pulleys. As a result, new rubber compounds with low indentation losses allow the use of reduced friction coefficients and thus lead to reduced power consumption, smaller drives and lower belt tensions. The deeper understanding of the flux of forces within belt splices led to both optimised splice design and optimised rubber compounds which significantly improve the dynamic splice efficiency. Therefore, in accordance with the standard, the benefits of these technologies and the better understanding of material behaviour allow a reduction of belt strength still maintaining sufficient safety factors. Thus engineers are enabled to calculate belt tensions more exactly and users are encouraged to pay more attention to starting and braking techniques. DETERMINATION OF DRIVE FORCE According to the DIN standards the resistance to motion generally has to be determined for each different section of the belt conveyor including upper and lower run separately. The necessary drive power P is calculated as [ ] with v as the conveying speed. The total of all resistances to motion of carry and return run can be determined as [ ] FHo and FHu are the primary resistances consisting of the running resistances of the idlers, the indentation resistance of the belt, the fulling of the conveyed material and the flexure of the belt. While indentation resistance and idler resistance are measurable, they have been deter- mined to be responsible for up to 70% of the primary resistances covered by FH. Further FN is the secondary resistance that covers, for example, the resistance of feeding points and scrapers. Fa are the total slope resistances and Fs is the total of all special resistances, resulting, for example, from belt steering devices. These three resistances should be neglected in the following discussion. For conveyors where a determination of the substantial parts of the resistances to motion is not possible, according to the new DIN standard [31 a determination of the drive power is acceptable by using the fictitious friction factor) [ ] In this formula the index i identifies the individual section of the conveyor, 1 is the length of the section and MR, MG and ML are the related masses of the idlers, the belt and the load in kg/m. INTRODUCTION The application of micro-computers to the evaluation of an advanced exploration project is illustrated by reference to a large project in the Sudbury Basin region of Canada. The deposit in question is polymetalic (Cu, Pb, Zn, Au, Ag) with a strike length of 3048m (10000ft) and has been explored to a depth of 457m (1500ft) by approximately 1350 diamond drillhole of between 9 - 305m (30-1000ft) in length. The large amount of data involved and the ability to rapidly recalculate geological reserves in response to fluctuating metal prices were key factors in the application of a micro-computer based evaluation system. The evaluation software was implemented at two levels, with data capture implemented mainly on - an entry level workstation comprising an IBM-PC compatible (PC-XT) micro-computer equipped with a 20Mb hard disc, printer and RS-232 serial communication facilities. Data analysis, display, geo- logical modelling and processing was carried out on a high-level workstation based on a Hewlett-Packard 9000 super- micro computer and peripherals, including a 40Mb hard disc, tablet digitizer and plotter. Basic drillhole data was entered either directly at the super- micro or transferred from the PC via the RS-232 link. The evaluation process proceeds once the data is edited and in a "clean" format within a master project database. The software is comprised of a suite of modular, integrated programs based on ease of use, interactive graphics and optimized for the computer workstation. Drillhole data was displayed and plotted as hard copy plots on which geological interpretations were developed. The data was copied into small manageable projects consisting of 100 to 150 drillholes, within which a sectional model was created such that all the models are interconnected along the entire strike with no overlaps. Geological reserves were derived by developing a set of function variables, including Net Smelter Return, within the database. The values of these functions can be displayed on the model sections and "ore” zones defined in accordance with pre-determined cutoff values. Interpolation of the modelled data was then carried out and geological reserves calculated and reported. DATA CAPTURE Drillhole data for the project consisted mainly of existing drillhole logs, although the system allows for the entry of new information as it becomes available. The structure and format (i.e. number and length of variable fields) is user defined. The log for this project comprises an abbreviated section for name, competency, grain size, texture, colour and alteration. Fields are defined for structural information regarding bedding and fault angles and up to seven mineral identification columns and percentages are available. Assay information consisting of the sample number, width and six determinations (Cu%, Pb%, Zn%, Fe%, Au opt., Ag opt.) along with a comments section of 25 characters completes the log. One powerful feature of the data- base is the ability to set up function variables that are mathematical and/or logical combinations of the project variables, enabling the user to develop economic variables such as Net Smelter Return. These functions include current treatment costs, deductions and penalties and can be rapidly recalculated within the database to accommodate changes in metal prices, forecast recoveries and exchange rates (Table 1).

In today's "information age", we have the ability to collect volumes of data about a company's performance. The challenge is to turn that data into information employees can understand and use to fine-tune equipment, modify work processes, and ultimately manage production. Software programs have increasingly given end users control over what data is used and how it is presented. Kennecott has implemented an information system capable of collecting and storing data at the primary level. This enables plant personnel to transform historical data into information for action. Kennecott plans to expand its data collection and use trending and reporting capabilities to move toward a fully optimized operation.

Introduction Net Present Value (NPV) techniques are becoming widely used in industry as a standard analytical tool in making capital budgeting decisions. However, NPV techniques are often misused in "common practice." A comparison was made between the use of NPV techniques in common practice and an Adjusted Net Present Value (ANPV) approach to capital budgeting in the financial analysis of a mining project. The comparison was made by applying both methods to a hypothetical copper project. The intent of the analysis is to provide an example for practitioners to follow when financially analyzing mining (or other) projects. To maintain the thrust of the analysis, the project has been evaluated as a stand alone, total project. No consideration has been made of the division of cash flows accruing to various owners over the life of the project. This omission will not affect the comparative nature of the analysis. This discussion assumes that the reader is familiar with present value as a concept and as a tool in capital budgeting. Finance theory has embraced NPV analysis as the correct way to evaluate capital budgeting alternatives. Many articles have been written expounding the virtues of NPV over other capital budgeting methods, such as Internal Rate of Return (IRR), Payback, Accounting Rate of Return, and others. It is not the purpose of this article to review all of the literature in this area; suffice it to say that in academic circles NPV concepts are accepted as the norm. A survey by Schall, Sundem, and Geijsbeck (1978) indicates that major US companies are finally following in academia's footsteps. Fifty-six percent of the companies responding to the survey use NPV techniques in their capital budgeting process. Further, some 86% of the companies surveyed use discounted cash flow methods (NPV or IRR) for capital budgeting decisions. This compares with a survey by Klammer (1972) that showed 57% of companies using both techniques, a considerable increase in seven years. With the increasing use of NPV techniques in industry, there are certain uses in common practice that can give misleading results. Five common errors in NPV analysis of large projects are: • No distinction is made between real and nominal cashflows. • The discount rate(s) used in the NPV analysis is not formally adjusted for risk. • There is no distinction of possible differences in the riskiness of different project cash flows; i.e., revenue vs. depreciation. • There is no recognition of the cash benefits to the project from interest tax shields (interest payments on the project's debt that are tax deductible). • There is no clear recognition of subsidies to the project from concessionary debt financing. No Distinction Between Real and Nominal Cash Flows Often, expected cash flows for a project are stated as a mixture of real (in constant dollars) and nominal (in current dollars) cash flows. For example, expected revenue cash flows may be stated in real terms and depreciation may be stated in nominal terms. Assessments of the stability performance of open pit highwalls have traditionally been based on consideration of surface movement rates. Although generally accepted in industry, this approach presents challenges for establishing appropriate threshold values to allow for safe mining operations and does not address the issue of total strain. Surface movement monitoring data from a limited number of open pit mining operations in North and South America has been evaluated in terms of highwall strain, rock mass quality and inferred mechanism of instability. Threshold strain levels for key stages of highwall stability proposed from previous work have been reviewed and are generally endorsed based on evaluation of additional data. An empirical highwall strain criteria for the assessment of highwall stability performance is postulated based on the observed trends in highwall strain data from the case histories presented.

Introduction In 1979, rumors of a developing drug problem within IMC Fertilizer's Carlsbad, NM workforce began to surface. For the next two years, a management team contacted local, state, and federal regulatory agencies that had the potential resources to help combat this apparently escalating problem. These contacts included the local police department, the county sheriff's office, the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). IMC approached each agency with two proposals. The first required the agency provide an undercover agent for placement in the company's underground facilities. The alternative required the company to provide the agent with the participating agency lending necessary legal expertise and guidance to accumulate the necessary data. MSHA regulations prohibit intoxicating beverages and narcotics on mining property. They also forbid persons under the influence of alcohol or narcotics from working in or around mines. The agency could not, however, help with this problem. The remaining agencies were sympathetic, but were unwilling to assist in implementing either program, citing legal implications. Without exception, these agencies not only refused to provide help, they discouraged any type of undercover operation, searches, drug screenings, or using dogs trained in narcotics detection. As law enforcement officials, they reasoned that any such program constitutes potential civil rights violations. An attorney advised IMC that it was not required to adhere to the same guidelines as law enforcement and regulatory agencies. It was his legal opinion that the company could conduct an undercover operation. But he recommended finding a private firm that specialized in this type of investigation. An experienced firm should have the expertise to conduct the operation and avoid the legal pitfalls that could be encountered. The management team agreed with the attorney and elected to hire a private firm. After extensive research and evaluation, three reputable companies were contacted, advised of the needs, and asked to submit a proposal. Their initial response was enthusiastic. None, however, submitted a proposal. Each was unable to locate a qualified agent willing to work in an underground environment. Privacy and civil rights At this point, it was apparent that an undercover operation was not feasible due to the lack of inhouse expertise and the lack of outside assistance. After more research, it was concluded that the only viable options left were the ones that the law enforcement community had earlier discouraged. These options included locker and personal searches, use of dogs trained in narcotics detection, and drug screening or testing. The management team evaluated the pros and cons of locker and personal searches. They concluded that if conducted properly, this approach could eliminate the problems. The potential legal liabilities, however, appeared to be tremendous. Strict guidelines would have to be adhered to in order to avoid invasion of privacy and civil rights violations. This meant announcing locker searches before conducting them and obtaining written permission from an individual before searching his person. Although the group was reluctant to lose yet another option, it was concluded that conducting searches under these conditions would be ineffective. It would also convey the message to the workforce that the substance abusers had the upper hand. This author was extremely critical of this legal opinion at the time. I have since concluded that the attorney was correct. This occurred in mid-1982. Court decisions of that era indicated the legal and political climate was sensitive to these issues. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducratory and field tests to evaluate the effectiveness of dust collector bags for reducing dust liberation and operator exposure from a roof bolter?s dust collection system. The laboratory tests evaluated the bag?s effectiveness to contain dust and the effect on canister filter loading in both a bag and bagless condition. The dust emissions from the collector?s exhaust were also measured in each condition during laboratory testing and show that nearly 100% of the test dust fed into the collector was captured by the dust bags. Loading and pressure drop on the dust collector?s canister filter is greatly decreased when using the bags, enabling longer periods of drilling without filter removal/cleaning. The field results showed that, even though dust standards were met, respirable dust in exhausted emissions was reduced around the bolter. Laboratory and field results show that benefits from use of the bags are realized in all areas of operator exposure.

Extensive test work performed on the Coalscan 3500 ash analyzer at the Grootegeluk Coal Mine has led to the successful implementation of on-line ash monitoring to control the quality of coking coal and power station coal. Test work results are given and the advantages of on-line bias compensation discussed. Some details of the quality control systems subsequently implemented are also highlighted. Finally, the economic benefit of on-line ash monitoring based on the Mayer curve is demonstrated.

Perlite is a naturally occurring siliceous rock, which can be expanded from four to twenty times its original volume when heated at a temperature close to its softening point. The expanded perlite is characterized by increased sound and thermal insulating properties. However, the conventionally expanded perlite products have high porosity and low mechanical properties that limit the range of their applications in the construction and chemical industry. The present work aims at the development of new closed porous microcellular material from perlite with enhanced mechanical and physical properties to be applied in new applications, like joint compounds, functional fillers for special paint types, special blasters and mortars, artificial marble. For the production of these new materials a vertical electrically heated furnace with six different heating zones and controlled gradient temperature profile was used. The effect of major process parameters, like temperature and air flow, on the quality of the produced materials was studied using Greek perlite from Milos Island. The quality of the new products was evaluated in terms of their bulk density, compression strength, water and oil absorption, surface area and pore volume. The experimental results show that the produced materials are characterised by improved mechanical and physical properties compared to the conventionally expanded perlite products.

INTRODUCTION Controlled ground freezing for mining and construction applications has been in use for over a century. Despite the great technological evolution which has occurred during this period, ground freezing is still used on projects today with much the same basic technology as that used originally over 100 years ago. Major developments have occurred in the separate fields of frozen soil mechanics, refrigeration, and heat transfer analysis. However, except for a few projects in Europe and Asia, these developments have not been combined to upgrade ground freezing techniques to their potential level. In view of this situation, it is believed desirable to examine the art of ground freezing in light of recent technical developments, together with highlights on some of the apparent advantages, disadvantages and economics of the various alternative approaches. The purpose of this paper is to attempt such an examination, with particular emphasis on the practical application of presently available technology. GENERAL ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES Ground freezing may be used in any soil or rock formation, regardless of structure, grain size or permeability; however, it is best suited to soft ground rather than rock conditions. Freezing may be used for any size, shape or depth of excavation and the same physical plant can be used from job to job despite wide variation in these factors.

At Gold Fields' Chimney Creek Mine, major reviews of the reclamation and closure plans are done concurrently with the annual mine planning required for budget preparation. This review includes identifying and scheduling reclamation work that can be done within the next few years and development of associated costs. Longer term mine, leach pad and waste dump development are examined to take advantage of any design changes that can reduce ongoing reclamation or closure requirements and reduce costs. The success and cost effectiveness of past efforts are continually evaluated to determine the best methods for reclamation.
