Spiral concentration has gained a great deal of popularity as a cheap, effective method for recovering fine coal (8x100 mesh). Typically, 6-turn, wide-profile spirals are used in either a single pass, open- circuit configuration or in combination with a middlings retreat circuit. Recent work conducted at Carpco, however, has indicated that a split feed scenario and/or hydraulic classification in advance of spiral concentration offers significant advantages in both capacity and metallurgical performance. In addition, it has also been shown that the apparent density separation which naturally occurs in a hydraulic classifier provides significant up-grading in terms of pyrite and ash rejection. The results from this study will be presented in comparison with those obtained from open-circuit spiral testing.

Many gold ores are known to be refractory so that conventional cyanide processing will result in serious losses of gold and silver values. A significant percentage of these refractory ores contain aresenopyrite and the gold and silver is usually encapsulated within this matrix as well as the pyrite matrix. Normally the values can be recovered as flotation concentrates because of the sulfide compounds with recoveries of over 90% and at very good grades. In order to free the gold and silver, the sulfide matrix must be destroyed. This can presently be achieved by (1) pressure­temperature leaching (2) roasting and (3) bacterial leaching. All of them have advantages and disadvantages as well as an obviously increased cost for the each processing method. However, the increased gold and silver recovery should and must more than offset this cost. It is believed that gold recovery should be well over 90% from the concentrate so that overall recovery from the ore should be in the 90-95% region. All three processes must consider pollution control of both sulfur and arsenic to prevent contamination of air, water or land through improper waste disposal. This paper will concern only bacterial leaching and its necessary control of effluents and solids. Sulfur does not appear to be a problem as the element is oxidized to sulfate and is precipitated with an acceptable solubility. Other important improvements that must be controlled are arsenic and iron which are present as significant values (1-12 g/1 of arsenic, 20-40 g/1 of iron). In addition much smaller values of base metals, aluminum and magnesium can be present as well as other elements depending on the ore and these must be low enough after treatment to meet EPA regulations.

This paper describes the basics of regulatory control implementation including some practical guidelines for instrumentation installation, operator interface design, loop tuning, and continuous loop performance analysis. Tuning and analysis techniques are illustrated by step-by-step industrial examples. A small investment in basic control pays dividends in better overall plant performance and provides a solid foundation for advanced control efforts such as expert systems.

The depth at which it becomes more economical to use slope access instead of box-cut access for nearsurface coal reserves is termed the "transition depth." The transition depth can be established for a given coal property by considering cost estimates for those parameters that determine respective access methods. Fourteen parameters that influence access cost were identified, and ranges for these parameters were determined. A transitiondepth formula was developed to permit the determination of which is the better method of accessing a reserve, given information such as high wall slope, road width, total bench width, pit dimensions, road grade, belt component costs, pumping costs and the cost of overburden removal and reclamation. In most cases in Appalachia, especially in eastern Kentucky, the observed transition depth ranges from 20 to 30 m (66 to l00 ft). This indicates that actual practice is consistent with the analytical approach used.

This paper looks at four critical lubricants used in the conveyor systems of the northern Albertan oil sand facility. The requirements for the lubricants used in the electric motors and gear boxes of the drive systems, the pulley bearing and the idler bearings are discussed in terms of the applications and the environment. A number of developments that have occurred in recent years are presented. Data from the field and from custom designed testing in the laboratory are used to support the role of simulation testing in problem solving in this area of technology.

Georgia?s Coastal Plain contains important sediment-hosted deposits of kaolin, bauxite, heavy minerals, sand and gravel, silica sand, carbonate rocks, and fuller's earth. Genesis, location, size, and quality of these deposits are related to terrestrial, marginal-marine, and shallow-marine depositional environments that evolved during development of the southeastern North American continental margin. From the Cretaceous to Eocene, kaolin and aluminous sediments, which contained mica and feldspar, were deposited in marshes, ponds, and bays located in deltas or behind barrier islands or spits. In the Cretaceous sediments, subsequent, intensive, in situ chemical weathering converted mica and feldspar to kaolin. Kaolin eroded from deeply weathered granitic rocks in the Georgia Piedmont was deposited in Paleocene to Eocene sediments. Subaerial exposure during the Paleocene and Eocene desilicated kaolin sediments to form bauxite. Sand and gravel, silica sand, and heavy-mineral deposits are found in Cretaceous to Eocene fluvial and shoreline sediments, some of which are associated with the kaolin and bauxite deposits. Source areas, intensive chemical weathering in the source areas, transportation by the major river systems, and deposition of these clastic sediments in similar or nearby depositional environments are common elements in the genesis of these resources. Eocene fuller's-earth deposits are opaline claystones in near-shore to shelf-marine sediments, which overlie the kaolin-bearing strata. These claystones consist of montmorillonite and opal/ cristobalite derived from alteration of diatom frustules. Favorable ocean currents provided nutrients for extensive planktonic growth. Oligocene and Miocene carbonate rocks were deposited principally in shallow-marine embayments. Miocene fuller's- earth deposits in south-central Georgia and adjacent parts of Florida contain palygorskite that formed through alteration of montmorillonite/bentonite clays. Deposition and subsequent alteration occurred in shallow, brackish-water lagoons under relatively high temperature and subtropical conditions. Middle and late Miocene phosphorites were deposited on a shallow carbonate-shelf platform and were concentrated proximal to anticlinal highs. Numerous marine transgressions and regressions since the beginning of the Pleistocene resulted in shoreline detrital deposits containing aggregate sand, silica sand, and heavy minerals on the Coastal Plain and on the Continental Shelf. Major river systems transported sand and heavy minerals from source areas in the Piedmont and Upper Coastal Plain. Deltaic deposits of heavy minerals were redistributed and concentrated by longshore currents, shoreline processes, and aeolian processes. River-terrace sediments, correlative with the Pleistocene shoreline deposits, contain sand-and-gravel and silica-sand deposits. Aeolian dune sands are associated with both Pleistocene fluvial and shoreline detrital deposits.

M.A. Industries, Inc. has developed and is now offering on a commercially available basis, complete systems to recover and recycle lead from spent SLI batteries. The system begins with the breaking and separation of the component parts of the batteries and subsequent treatment of the effluent water produced by this operation. The recyclable materials recovered from this process are metallic lead, lead paste and polypropylene. The lead paste is introduced into a process to convert it from a lead sulfate to a lead carbonate. The process also regenerates the salt solutions into reusable carbonate. The lead carbonate is then leached into an acid bath where it is later recovered by a proprietary electrolytic process. The metallic lead is recovered in a short rotary furnace producing metal for further refining and alloying. The polypropylene is further washed and then introduced to a reclaim extruder along with the proper modifiers and additives. The resulting resin can then be sold on the open market to injection molding processors. This complete system greatly reduces the amount of waste to be disposed of and completely complies with all applicable EPA guidelines.

The presence of agglomerated particles in airborne dust in coal mines has been confirmed by SEM examination of static samples collected on substrates. In addition, the effect of agglomerated particles on the performance of cascade impactors and cyclone- type personal samplers has been studied. Simple procedures have been developed for evaluating the extent of agglomeration in air-borne dust by comparing the observed size- selectivity of the sampling devices with that expected under idealized conditions. Applications of these techniques in the laboratory and in underground mines are discussed.

This paper covers the development of the Yeelirrie Uranium Project from the discovery of the Yeelirrie deposit in 1970 to the present time, with emphasis on the mining, processing, and environmental requirements of the project. The Yeelirrie Uranium Project is managed by the "Yeelirrie Uranium Joint Venture Partnership", which, when formed, consisted of Yeelirrie Development Company Pty., Ltd., Urangesellschaft, Australia Pty. Ltd. and Esso Exploration and Production Australia Inc. The Yeelirrie Uranium Joint Venture Partnership holds mineral claims over the Yeelirrie uranium ore deposit in Western Australia. This deposit encompasses some 35 million tonnes of ore containing in excess of 50,000 tonnes of uranium as U308. Agreement has been reached with the State of Western Australia to mine and process the ore to produce uranium ore concentrate. The Project scope provides for an open-cut mine, alkaline leach hydrometallurgy plant, power plant, township, airstrip, access roads, community services and utilities. The Yeelirrie Uranium Project described herein has progressed through the stages of exploration, mine evaluation, process testing, project scope definition, environmental approval, Pilot Plant operation, preliminary engineering and the publishing of a definitive Project Feasibility Study. This article summarizes the project development through the above stages.

Determining the correct combination of mix components and water for high-density paste backfills that have the transport and deposition properties necessary for a mining operation is a difficult task. Rheologic properties cannot be determined without conducting full-scale pumping tests, and data from existing tests tire very limited. This paper presents the findings of investigations undertaken to determine if paste-backfill rheology can be determined using existing techniques and to determine which mix and system variables have the greatest influence on transport-pressure loss. Data from laboratory-scale pumping tests were used to produce a rheologic model of flow behavior for comparison, and a statistical analysis was conducted to determine the most significant factors affecting transport-pressure loss.

The effect of liner shape on power consumption was studied in a small laboratory mill under various operating conditions. It was found that the angle subtended between the lifter front face and the face in contact with the mill case has the most significant influence. The increasing height of lifter reduced power consumption, whereas the lifter spacing did not show any influence. The effect of height is less relevant at lower front angles. Highest power consumption is achieved with a 45" front angle. A comparison of cylinders and balls under identical conditions gives higher power consumption for ball charges. The data does suggest that, for maximum power draw, slip in the outer layers of the charge and the early recirculation of energy to the mill case should be avoided. Both factors prevent an efficient energy transfer to the mill charge.

Analysis of discontinuous rock masses for engineering design purposes requires information about fracture characteristics. For such studies, fractures or other elements of the rock fabric (bedding, foliation, etc.) should be considered in a statistical manner because they generally have high frequencies of occurrence and are discontinuous over the design area. A practical design procedure includes defining structural domains as those areas which contain fractures with similar orientation patterns. Within a structural domain, the statistical distributions of fracture set characteristics (spacing, fracture density, dip, dip direction, etc.) may be computed from mapped data and then used to quantitatively describe the rock fabric. These distributions can then be randomly sampled (using Monte Carlo techniques) to simulate the rock fabric and to help define potential failure surfaces along fractures. 1 The prediction of failure geometries is an essential part of stability analyses used in designing rock slopes or underground openings. In current probabilistic design procedures, Monte Carlo techniques that rely upon the iterative generation and analysis of deterministic instability models do not incorporate spatial aspects of the random variation in fracture set characteristics, 1,2 but consider the characteristics to be spatially independent.

The study of the apatite deposits of the Aldan Shield shows wide spread of the Precambrian apatite-carbonate ores and possibilities of using them for extraction of apatite. Dependency of flotation on ore minerals was studied according to the following scheme: preparation of the monomineralic samples of anhydrite, gypsum, chlorite, serpentine, phlogopite, apatite; mixing them in apatite ore of the average composition; followed by flotation. Another series of the experiments was conducted to ascertain a dependence of flotation activity of the different minerals on the different flotation reagents, which were used as collectors. It has been shown that apatite from silicate-carbonate ores is most extractable because it has the biggest size of grains and is the most free of inclusions. Beneficiation of the sulphate-containing apatite-carbonate rocks is possible when flotol - 7.9 is used as a collector. Meanwhile, the use of the tallaktam leads to an increase in the sulphate recovery. The estimation of individual technological features of the layered Mghydrosilicates and their influence on the process of beneficiation has been examined using samples of apatite-dolomite ore (P205-8%) with the addition of the phlogopite, serpentine and chlorite. The results show that there is little influence of the chlorite presence on the flotation while the serpentine presence leads to a decrease of the flotation, because of its high specific surface area.

Iron ore concentrates pellets are currently in duration heat hardened (sintered) under oxidizing conditions. Pellets produced from magnetite ore concentrate are completely oxidized during induration and finish as hematite pellets. These pellets then require a blast furnace to reduce the hematite to metallic pig iron. Partially reduced pellets would save energy and fuel during transportation and further reduction. It has been stated in the literature “the most important single factor responsible for the development of strength in fired magnetite pellets containing no additive is the oxidation of the magnetite to hematite and the subsequent recrystallization and grain growth of this constituent.” However experiments shown in this paper reveal that oxidation is not necessary to produce high-strength pellets. Magnetite concentrate pellets developed similar strength when indurated at 1350°C under either oxidizing (air) or inert (argon) atmosphere; the pellets sintered under argon remained magnetite. In addition, magnetite concentrate pellets indurated under reducing (CO) atmosphere also remained as magnetite, but required induration temperature of approximately 150°C less than the other pellets.

Introduction A mine characteristic curve is of great importance for both theoretical analysis and daily management of a mine ventilation network. Ventilation engineers are well acquainted with the ways of obtaining and using a mine characteristic curve that is conventionally associated only with single-fan networks. However, for a multiple-fan network, difficulty has long been recognized in defining the curve, not to mention, obtaining or using it. To extend the concept of mine characteristic curves for a multiple-fan network, a subsystem-based approach has been introduced by Wang (1992a). He defines a subsystem characteristic curve for a multiple-fan network and discusses the numerical procedure for constructing the curve. A graphical method of obtaining a subsystem characteristic curve for serial-parallel, multiple-fan networks has also been accomplished (Wang, 1992b). In spite of the maturity of the fundamental concepts related to and the numerical analysis tool for a multiple-fan ventilation network, information regarding the related laboratory tests is very scarce. To make up this gap, laboratory experiments have been done by using a two-fan experimental network. This paper presents the methodology and major findings regarding the construction and features of a subsystem characteristic curve. Characteristic curves and measurement fundamentals A characteristic curve A characteristic curve is a graphic presentation of the relationship between any two variables of a two-terminal component. It is typically defined in the form of a quantity-pressure curve for a ventilation component, which can be a single branch (airway), a fan, a regulator, a portion of a network or even a whole network. If a component is a single branch, the curve is called a branch characteristic curve. If it is a fan, then the curve is called a fan characteristic curve, and so on. Figure I illustrates the characteristic curves of some typical ventilation components. A general method for obtaining a characteristic curve from measurement is to apply an adjustable-pressure source between the two terminals of a component and measure the quantities corresponding to the different pressures. Mine characteristic curve A single-fan network can be easily divided into two ventilation components, the fan and the remaining network. The latter consists of only branches and regulators. Under this subdivision scheme, two characteristic curves can be constructed. They are the fan characteristic curve and the characteristic curve of the remaining network. The latter is referred to as the mine characteristic curve or the system characteristic curve. Although the general method for constructing a characteristic curve from measurement can be applied to obtain a mine characteristic curve, there is a shortcut for constructing the curve by introducing a mine resistance factor R. It is a constant if all of the resistance factors in the network are constant. R relates mine pressure H with quantity Q as in: H=RQ2 (1) For a given R, Eq. (1) can be directly used to plot a mine characteristic curve by assigning a series of Q values and calculating the corresponding H values. Hence a shortcut to constructing a mine characteristic curve is to measure one set of mine pressure H and quantity Q values, calculate the mine resistance factor R using Eq. (1) and then plot the curve. Subsystem characteristic curve Applying a similar scheme as is used for a single-fan system, divide a multiple-fan network into two components, a fan under consideration and the remaining network that contains all the other elements (branches, regulators and remaining fans) of the network. Rare earth elements (REE) are becoming more important in our society. REE deposits are found throughout NM. Some REE past production (1950s), as bastnaesite, came from the Gallinas Mountains district, Lincoln County, NM. Several companies and the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) have conducted exploration programs to identify REE potential. Four types of deposits are found in the district: epithermal REE-F veins, Cu-REE-F veins, REE-F breccia pipe and iron skarn deposits; all are associated with Tertiary peraluminous, alkaline to alkalic-calcic volcanic rocks. District zonation is defined by base metals (REE-F-Cu veins) that form center of the district, surrounded by REE-F veins. The magmatic-hydrothermal breccia pipe deposits form a belt partially surrounding the veins. Iron skarns formed at the top and edge of the trachyte intrusion and are likely the earliest stage of mineralization. In 1991-1992, USBM calculated an inferred resource of 0.487 million metric tons with a grade of 2.95% total REE. With the projected increase in demand of REE, areas such as the Gallinas Mountains district in New Mexico are being re-examined for additional REE potential.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study to evaluate the effectiveness of automatic water sprinkler systems in the extinguishment of incipient conveyor belt fires under ventilated conditions. Large-scale experiments were conducted using a double strand conveyor belt configuration. Standard response, pendent-type sprinklers, with activation temperatures of 100°C, were installed above and between the two strands of belting, in accordance with Federal standards for sprinkler system installations in belt drive areas. Experiments at airflows of 1.1 and 4.6 m/s showed that the sprinklers activated later, the peak heat release rate was larger, and more betting was consumed at the higher airflow. In experiments with 74°C, fast response, directional sprinklers, the sprinklers activated at the same heat release rate for both high and low airflows, but the peak heat release rate and amount of bett consumed was slightly higher at the lower airflow. Experiments were also conducted with 100 °C, standard pendent sprinklers installed above the top belt, in accordance with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 123 for sprinkler system installations in conveyor belt drive areas in underground coal mines. In these experiments, the heat release rate and amount of betting consumed was larger at the higher airflow.

INTRODUCTION Caving offers the lowest cost per ton of any large-scale mining method, but its successful application demands an ore body that conforms to several rigid requirements. The deposit must be of wide areal extent, massive and not spotty in ore values, and insensitive to ore dilution. It must also be a rock mass that breaks up readily. There are only three active caving operations in the US-Climax, Henderson, and San Manuel-but caving methods have recently taken on new importance as deeper lower grade mineral occurrences and ore bodies are found. These deposits are too deep for surface min¬ing methods, and too low grade to support any type of underground mining except a bulk method such as caving. Announced discoveries or indications that may be amenable to caving include: Climax's Mt. Emmons molybdenum discovery in Colorado; Molycorp's Goat Hill molybdenum prospect in New Mexico; the Phelps Dodge molybdenum deposit in Beaver County, UT; Arizona copper occurrences such as Asarco's Sacaton, Hanna's Casa Grande, Noranda's Lakeshore, and Ken¬necott's Safford; Anaconda's suspected deep copper de¬posit in Butte, MT; Anaconda's Carr Fork, UT, deposit; and perhaps others. CAVABILITY'S ROLE IN FEASIBILITY STUDIES Caving is a system of underground mining which removes support from underneath an ore body. As a result, the rock mass fractures, fails, and flows vertically downward by gravity to be collected in previously ex¬cavated funnels. Types of ore that have been mined by caving include molybdenum, copper, iron, nickel, as¬bestos, and diamonds (Julin and Tobie, 1973). It is primarily a large-scale method, with production rates of more than 45 300 t/d (50,000 stpd) having been achieved. However, the initial capital investment before return is very high, often in the hundreds of millions of dollars. The cavability of an ore body or mineral occurrence is a critical item in the feasibility study of a proposed mine, not only from the point of overall minability, but from the point of impact on other costs such as blasting, loading, hauling, crushing, and grade recovered. Aside from the often-asked question of, "Will it or will it not cave?" the real questions are, "Can we afford to make it cave, carry the rock away, and extract the mineral?" The last is not a topic of this chapter, but the first two are. The cavability of an ore deposit or mineral occur¬rence is based on many things, but clearly, if a large enough area is undermined, any rock mass will cave. The result could be a violent collapse as occurred at Urad, CO (Kendrick, 1970), or perhaps the rock mass will cave beyond the ore boundary. Another unfavor¬able result could be ore blocks that are too large for the equipment and orepasses to handle without considerable secondary blasting. Weak rock with numerous fractures may produce a very fine ore when it caves, resulting in dilution and ground control problems. DETERMINING STRUCTURAL DOMAINS It has long been recognized that the geologic nature of an ore body is important to cavability (King, 1946). Such items as weak rock material, intensity of fractur¬ing, and severity of faulting all contribute to the success of a caving operation, and information regarding these is required as a minimum for the cavability determination. In practice, the rock mass-defined as the blocks of intact rock together with the intervening fractures, joints, faults, bedding planes, and other discontinuities-that contains the ore body, as well as the surrounding and overlying rock, must be examined in a systematic and detailed fashion. Surficial geology maps must be pre¬pared, exploration holes drilled, and core logged for en¬gineering information. The fracturing of the rock mass must be studied to ascertain the three-dimensional dis¬tribution of fractures and their characteristics, and faults must be located and described. The strength and other mechanical properties of the rock material, the fracture surfaces, and the fault filling materials must be tested and reported for later use by designers and planners. With this basic information and an understanding of the geologic setting, the rock mass can be divided into one or more structural domains which tend to behave similarly in response to engineering activities (Robertson and Piteau, 1970). One must keep in mind that the determination of the structural domains goes beyond the geologic units present. Several lithologic units may be lumped together, while a single lithologic unit can be divided into multiple domains. Major faults often form their own domain, and the direction of engineering ac¬tivity-for example, cave advance to the north rather than the south-may alter rock mass behavior, resulting in different domains. As an example of the detailed rock fracture map¬ping required for such studies, the structural domain determinations at the Climax mine (Kendorski, 1973) are shown in Fig. 1. The circles are Schmidt equal area projections of the three-dimensional attitudes of frac¬tures (Ramsay, 1967) mapped in detail at various rock exposures. The attitude of fractures is important to the cavability determination since it dictates the directional behavior of the rock mass as it fails, and determines the effectiveness of arching, keying, and rock block inter¬locking. Low-angle fractures must be present to allow movement of the rock in the vertical direction during undermining (Mahtab and Dixon, 1976); if low-angle planes of weakness are absent, the rock mass may arch with a keystone effect, rather than moving vertically downward.

The 70th Annual Meeting of the Minnesota Section of SME and the 58th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium were held April 22-24, 1997, in Duluth, MN. About 450 attended both. The Fifth Annual Trade Expo, held during the meeting, was attended by a record 80 exhibitors. An SME short course on materials handling preceded the meeting. Iron-mining and the steel industries highlighted the meetings. Specific topics in the keynote addresses and technical sessions primarily concerned iron mining, iron- ore processing, product (taconite pellet) transportation and the steel market. Although the iron mining industry held center stage, several papers outside of iron mining were also presented. Iron mining in Minnesota contributes $1 billion to Minnesota's economy. According to the Iron Mining Association of Minnesota, more than 20,000 state jobs rely on the industry. Minnesota's iron mining industry came through tough times in the early 1980s, mostly because of worldwide competition. However, the industry has shown significant improvement in the last 15 years. A large share of the steel industry's competitiveness in the late 1990s is due to cost and quality improvements in the taconite mines. The taconite industry has become more productive, largely through the application of new technology.
