The question of ultimate recovery in heap leaching operations is always of particular concern with respect to economic considerations. Of course the particle size distribution is a critical factor which determines ultimate recovery and which must be established based on a balance between the extent of mineral exposure and transport phenomena. Now it seems that the ultimate recovery for a given particle size distribution can be established from mineral exposure analysis by x-ray microtomography (XMT). Using recently developed software, micro-CT data can be used to determine the fraction of mineral exposed and thus the ultimate recovery. Examples of mineral exposure analysis are given for the copper heap leaching operation at Zaldivar, Chile.

We will describe modifications to air-sparged hydrocyclones (ASH) that enhance collisions and reaction of wastewater contaminants with sparged gas. These new ASH-based reaction chambers are combined with flotation tanks that are designed to optimize separation of bubbles and particles from water. In combination, these systems have achieved unprecedented removal of contaminants from industrial wastewater and process water while requiring smaller footprints with lower capital and operating costs. Real-world examples of chemical and nonchemical water treatments that demonstrate the outstanding flexibility and applicability of these systems are shown. Design enhancements that resolve the operational problems of traditional ASH are discussed.

Particle-size monitoring has become routine plant prac¬tice, and on-line measurement techniques have facilitated the proper control and monitoring of particle size. In this paper, the progress on an on-line size measurement technique using a y-ray source is discussed. The tray is emitted from a nucleonic density gauge (NDG) that serves as a slurry den¬sity-measurement device. This unit is calibrated and tested to predict the slurry density. Batch experiments were conducted to study the variation in slurry density of different types of ores, namely, quartz, bauxite and hematite. This data, in turn, is used to predict the size distribution of the solid particulate material making up the slurry. To calculate this size distribu¬tion from the slurry density, the theory of incremental sedi¬mentation is used. Experimental results show that the pre¬dicted size distribution compares well with the actual size distribution, as measured by the Andreasen pipette technique. Finally, a simplified scheme is proposed to monitor on-line size distribution using the nucleonic density gauge

In April 2012, work started on one of the most ambitious construction projects of Austria?s ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG ? the New Semmering Base Tunnel. Scheduled for completion in 2024, the 27.3 km (17 mile) tunnel through the Semmering range will cut the journey time on the south railway connecting Lower Austria and Styria. Before con-struction can begin at the entrance portal and tunnel bores, the work concentrates on the above ground sections with the clearance and excavation of the entrance ramp site. The slope is currently being excavated by the Baubeteiligungsge-sellschaft m.b.H. BBG-GRAZ. The cut face is shored up with shotcrete and permanent self-drilling anchors produced by Minova MAI, an economical bolting solution for softer rock formations. After completing the surface construction work, the twin-bore, single-track tunnel will be cut through the Semmering by conventional and continuous excavation beginning in 2015. Once completed, the New Semmering Base Tunnel will be one of the longest rail tunnels in Austria. It will act as a vital link on the route crossing Europe?s heartland from Northern Germany to Italy, which currently has to climb the steep Semmering pass between Gloggnitz and Mürzzuschlag on a historic mountain railway recognized as one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites. The old route imposes considerable limitations on heavy freight trans-port, and passenger trains have to slow down to a speed of around 50 kph (31 mph). The New Semmering Base Tunnel will bypass this bottleneck and cut 30 minutes off the journey time between Vienna and Graz. It represents a particular advantage for freight traffic, since the new route?s minimal incline of 8.4 percent removes all obstacles for even heavy freight trains.

In the U.S. today a number of tentative synthetic fuel plants have been sited by a number of major corporations. Each of these for a number of reasons have deferred construction. The only synthetic fuel plants under active development are those being built with the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) under the authority of the Non-nuclear Energy Research and Development Act of 1974 (Public Law 93-577). Under this Act in joint sponsorship with industry, a series of coal conversion pilot and demonstration plants are being built to produce environmentally acceptable fuels from high sulfur coals. Before entering into a discussion of the factors associated with the siting of the ERDA coal conversion program, the difference between a pilot plant and a demonstration plant should be explained. The terms pilot plant and demonstration plant iridicate a size of plant rahter than technology. A pilot plant will vary from an "add-on" to an existing facility to an independent unit. Demonstration plants are a wholly independent, self contained plants, capable of independent operation to demonstrate the environmenta1, economic, and technica1 feasibility of a technology. These plants are from one-third to one-tenth the scale of a commercial operation and often described as plus 1000 tons per day of coal consumption. Their purpose is stated in the Act (Section 6, (3)(E),) "to accelerate the commercial demonstration of technologies for producing syncrude and liquid petroleum products from coal: Provided. That the Administrator shall invite and consider proposals from potential participants based upon Federal assistants and participation through guaranteed prices or purchase of the products .... " In site selection and plant design it has been suggested that special interest groups should be allowed to dictate the site and specify the design. The earthquake locations are generally scattered mainly due to a simplified velocity model or seismic event picking errors. The aim of our research was to increase the resolution of the cloud of microseismic events recorded during mining activity in the Bobrek hard coal mine on the 3/503 coalface to delineate seismically active structures using unsupervised machine learning algorithms. We presented results of applying two completely different algorithms for reducing scatter in microseismic location to all events recorded during mining activity on the coalface - the collapsing (proposed by Jones and Stewart in 1997) and condensation (proposed by Kamer in 2015). The collapsing method simplifies the seismic cloud by shifting events inside their error ellipsoids towards local source densities. The error ellipsoids are determined by errors in the measured parameters and seismic network configuration. The advantage of the collapsing method is the partial elimination of blurring of the microseismic cloud. The condensation method reduces the size of the set of seismic events without changing the geometrical information. The reduction of the number of seismic events in the catalog takes place through the condensation of localized events with larger uncertainty into events with lower uncertainty. The spatio-temporal analysis of microseismic events was performed separately on two processed clouds – collapsed and condensed one. We examined how collapsing and condensation methods affect the automatic detection of clusters of microseismicity using density-based spatial clustering of application with noise algorithms. We compared structures detected by the machine learning algorithms in both seismic clouds first created by collapsing and second by the condensation. We identified structures created by mining activity and structures related to the local tectonics activated by mining. The presented results are essential for the prediction of future tremors induced by the mining operation and tectonics and thus ensuring safety in the mine.

The activities of Outokumpu Oy in the mining industry span all branches from prospecting to the production of refined metals and the manufacture of semifinished products. Products include copper, zinc, mercury, cadmium, nickel, cobalt, sulfur, gold, silver, iron ore, stainless steel, selenium, ferrochromium, lead and chromium concentrates, as well as chromite foundry sand. In addition, the activities of Outokumpu Oy extend to development and production of instruments, planning of industrial projects and instrumentation as well as the manufacture of specialized machines for ore concentration. The company now operates ten mines, eight of which are underground and all of which are in sulfide deposits except one. The fully automated monitoring and control of underground mine ventilation at the Pyhasalmi mine are an important technological contribution to the industry. Development work on the ventilation control was started in 1969, and since May 1973 it has operated in a fully automated computer-controlled mode. The Pyhasalmi mine has been in production since 1962, having begun as an open-pit operation. Development of underground mining began in 1967. The present annual production is one million tons all from underground mining. The underground mine is equipped with a main shaft and an auxiliary shaft, and two raises for ventilation. There is also a rampway from the surface to a depth of 500 m. The main shaft is for ore hoisting and the auxiliary shaft is used for waste-rock hoisting and for downcast ventilation. One of the raises is for downcast ventilation and the other is for upcast ventilation. The mining methods employed at Pyhasalmi are sublevel stoping with backfill, sublevel caving, and sublevel shrinkage stoping. Copper and zinc concentrates are produced. The Pyhasalmi mine is highly mechanized with about 4000 installed diesel horsepower underground. The maximum capacity of fresh air is 150 m3/s.

Elemental sulphur occurrences are widely distributed in two geological environments: -1-Basins containing hydrocarbons and zones of Cenozoic vulcanism. However, very few of these constitute deposits large enough to be of commercial importance. Almost all of the elemental sulphur mined in the world comes from bioepigenetic deposits in petroliferous basins. These deposits occur in two general structural styles: diapiric (salt domes) and stratiform. Examples of diapiric deposits occur in the Gulf Coast basins of Texas, Louisiana, and southern Mexico. Examples of stratiform deposits occur in the Fergana and Amudarya depressions of Central Asia, the Mesopotamian Depression in Iraq, the Cis-Carpathian Trough in Poland and Russia, and the Permian Basin in Texas. Economic bioepigenetic sulphur deposits range in size from approximately 1 million tons of sulphur in the smaller salt dome deposits to more than ZOO million tons of sulphur at the Mishraq stratiform deposit in Iraq. Total world production from bioepigenetic deposits amounts to approximately 16 million tons of sulphur per year, one-half of the world's present annual consumption of elemental sulphur. Most of the balance of the annual consumption is recovered from sour gas and petroleum. All bioepigenetic sulphur deposits share remarkably similar origins and characteristics. They are formed by anaerobic bacterial replacement of gypsum or anhydrite in tilted basins where evaporite beds are underlain by petroleum. Figure 1 illustrates a generalized cross-section of a salt dome sulphur deposit. Figures Z, 3, and 4 are cross-sections of three types of stratiform sulphur deposits. In terms of sulphur genesis, the only significant difference between the salt dome and stratiform deposits is that the positioning of the anhydrites above the petroleum in the salt domes is caused by diapiric rather than sedimentary processes. In the salt domes, the residual anhydrites of the cap-rocks are accumulated by solution and removal of halite by artesian ground waters.

Surface mining of coal in the South developed into a major industry during the 1960's. The economic significance of the industry is much greater than is readily apparent when one considers only the value of the coal mined. The abun-dant supply of relatively inexpensive steam coal for electric power generation that has been derived from the surface mines has provided the foundation for the industrial expansion that has occurred throughout the South. The region, in gen-eral, has enjoyed the benefits of plentiful low cost electric power. However, re-cent political decisions, at all levels of government, threaten to destroy or severely curtail the surface mining of coal and eliminate the economic advantages once enjoyed by the region. These political decisions are rapidly changing the basic rules of operation and fundamental economics of surface coal mining. Recent changes, resulting from the enactment of environmental and health and safety laws and various bureaucratic rules and regulations, have had a three-fold effect: 1) Greatly increased operating cost, 2) increased lead times for mine development, 3) limited potential reserve base for future mining. Also current legislative proposals are casting a shadow of uncertainty over the future of all coal mining operations that has created serious delays and in-creased cost for the expansion of the coal industry necessary to meet our project independence goals. "For urban tunneling projects it is essential to predict and prevent building damage. Although various case studies and experiments have shown that buildings considerably modify greenfield soil movements, widely accepted damage assessment methods neglect this soil-structure interaction and simplify structures as linear elastic beams. This paper summarizes an experimental investigation of the response of more realistic structures to tunneling-induced deformations. Small scale structural models with façade openings and brittle material properties were 3D printed and tested in a geotechnical centrifuge. Soil and structure displacement data were obtained by image-based measurement. Results demonstrate that structures notably mitigate differential greenfield ground displacements. It is also shown that maximum soil settlements, horizontal soil displacements beneath the structure and structural damage in the form of cracking significantly depend on the position of the structure in the settlement profile. The results provide a basis from which to predict building settlement response with greater certainty. INTRODUCTION With continuing population growth and increasing urbanization expected in the next decades, there is an urgent need for a next generation of infrastructure. It is likely that a large part of this infrastructure will be underground. Such creation of urban underground space frequently involves the excavation of shallow tunnels in close proximity to existing structures and utilities. For example, along the Crossrail project in London more than 1,200 structures are located within a possible influence area of the tunnel construction (Torp-Petersen and Black 2001). The assessment of building damage plays a vital role throughout the planning, design and construction stage of urban tunneling projects. However, while predictions of tunneling-induced deformations in the greenfield can generally be made with some confidence, much uncertainty exists about how structures interact with ground movements arising from tunnel construction."

The Support Technology Optimization Program (STOP) has been developed by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to provide a comprehensive tool for evaluating the performance of available secondary roof support systems and designs based on support strength, convergence, cost, installation time and material handling considerations. This program uses engineering models developed from full-scale testing of numerous supports under controlled loading conditions in the unique NIOSH Mine Roof Simulator load frame to determine the support load-displacement performance as a function of the various sup- port design parameters. Both standing supports, such as wood cribs installed within the entry, and intrinsic supports such as cable bolts, can be evaluated. Support systems can be designed and compared for use in a new mining section or to evaluate potential replacements for an existing design. The support design requirements are defined from 1) estimating the failure height in the immediate roof, 2) in-mine measure- ments of support and strata interaction or development of ground reaction curves from numerical modeling, 3) the performance of an existing support system, or 4) from any arbitrary load and convergence criteria. All settings can be saved to permit resuming an evaluation in progress at a later time. This paper presents the updated MS Windows version of this tool, which can be easily installed and run on a personal computer. This Windows implementation will feature a project and application scenario setup where multiple scenarios can be assigned to one project. Scenarios can then be compared on support parameters and cost. Cost parameters can be provided either as individual cost items or using a price grouping feature. Additional support performance curves and/or additional ground reaction curves will be distributed with program updates as new information is developed. Users can also provide their own support and/or ground reaction curves.

This paper deals with the effects of various bit geometric parameters on the failure characteristics of rock material. Improving the rock-cutting efficiency of continuous mining machines has proven to be an interesting research topic during the last few decades. In the current study, an automated rotary rock-cutting simulator, duplicating a continuous miner, was used to study these parameters in the laboratory. The improvement of bit performance in terms of its life, cutting efficiency, dust production and energy consumption has drawn widespread attention. Research has demonstrated that optimizing bit parameters can result in efficient fragmentation of rock. Indiana limestone rock material was used in this study. The bit tip angle, bit tip size, bit spacing, depth of cut and cutting velocity of the rotary drum were varied to investigate the failure characteristics. The cutting pressure, penetrating pressure and the depth of cut were monitored on the simulator during the cutting process. Airborne dust and settled dust were measured for each experiment. Then, the specific airborne dust and specific energy were determined for each type of bit. Triaxial tests were carried out to correlate the failure angle of the rock in the static case to the dynamic cutting process failure. The physical and mechanical properties of the rock were also determined to assess their influence on the wear characteristics of each bit.

Shale gas wells drilled in longwall chain pillars are influenced by longwall mining. Longwall mining on each side of the chain pillars can create overburden movements and induce deformations in gas well casings. If the deformations result in a casing breach, intrusive shale gas could leak into the longwall mine with serious safety consequences. This study concerns five shale gas wells in the chain pillars between two adjacent longwall panels in the Pittsburgh coal seam under a cover depth of 670 ft and a mining height of 7 ft. The gas wells were constructed with typical casing design, but a casing cementing alternative with uncemented production casings was practiced. Four production casings were uncemented, and one production casing was unintentionally cemented with good quality cement to a 535-ft depth and low-quality cement stringers from a 444- to 535-ft depth. The longwall faces passed by the shale gas wells as each adjacent longwall panel retreated. Production casings were surveyed by a multi-finger caliper after each panel was mined. No deformation was detected in the four uncemented production casings, but small deformations were detected in the partially cemented production casing. The maximum measured deformation in the cemented production casing was 0.05 in. after first panel mining and 0.06 in. after second panel mining. The casing deformations were also predicted by the FLAC3D model set up on site-specific overburden geology. The predicted deformations were in good agreement with the measurements in terms of deformation locations and magnitudes. All five shale gas wells resumed normal production after being temporarily plugged during the period of mine-by. This study provides a successful demonstration of the effectiveness of a casing cementing alternative for decoupling production and intermediate casing, and thus minimizing the influence of longwall mining in the shale gas wells drilled through longwall chain pillars.

Corporate managers are facing increasingly demanding challenges as they seek to ensure compliance with environmental laws. Management also must deal with new liabilities created by environmental laws. These laws provide both private groups and governmental agencies with access to the courts to seek penalties, compliance orders, cleanups, or to forestall developments that could affect ecosystems. Environmental laws and liabilities are also affecting commercial transactions, including the availability of financing. Corporate managers must develop new and innovative methods to address these challenges in order to assure both sustainable industrial growth and stewardship of the environment.

This investigation mainly focused on designing a bunker system for a large underground coal mine. The primary purpose of this bunker system was to keep high- and low-sulfur coal segregated on the underground belt system. These bunkers were also required for protecting the mine faces from out by belt delays. Methodologies used in developing this plan are briefly discussed. The final design and the procedures formulated for implementing it are also presented.

Bureau of Mines personnel brought together many of these individual studies, and from them have attempted to develop a coordinated plan for modeling radon daughter concentrations in the uranium mine environment. INTRODUCTION A two-dimensional approach for modeling narrow-vein deposits using the TECHBASE® software was implemented at Sunshine Mining for its use in the evaluation of mineral properties. This 2-D approach prevents the overestimation of high-grade tons typically associated with the use of fixed 3-D blocks and reduces the size of the model in computer memory. The method consists of constructing a two-dimensional model oriented along the average plane of the mineralized structure. This approach works well for single, multiple and intersecting veins with the condition that each vein is roughly planar with variation in dip or strike less than 30" in order to maintain a reasonable resolution in the process of projecting data onto a plane (Figure 1). Also, a precise identification of the hanging-wall and foot-wall location is critical in ensuring an accurate representation of the vein. By using various modeling techniques, the two-dimensional model estimates metal content, thickness, tonnage, economic and dilution parameters which will be ultimately used in the identification of minable reserves. The following is a generic description of the steps involved in modeling a steeply dipping vein. DATA ENTRY A typical project database consists of drillhole coordinates, survey information, assay data and any other quantitative or qualitative data. This database can be created inside the software or imported from any spreadsheet. TECHBASE® utilizes the concept of "fields" and "records" (columns and rows) for storing data. The use of "calculated fields" enables the user to expand on the manipulation of the database with minimum memory requirements. Another important feature of TECHBASE® is the ability to replicate the structure and format of the "tables" for its use in another project and the capability of running a series of repetitive tasks by means of batch and "runlog" files.

The 34th Forum on the Geology of Industrial Minerals gave members a chance to see the geology of various stone and ore deposits displayed graphically in quarry walls and also provided an opportunity to hear and see first-rate papers and posters on the geology of industrial minerals. Also, some field trips passed through areas of spectacular scenery. As a bonus, participants saw scenic mines, some of which are "pretty as a picture." Watercolor paintings prove it. At the Oklahoma Forum, the writer displayed a number of paintings of mines and other landscapes seen during previous Forum trips. These paintings and this brief article are part of a crusade to prove that some mines and geologic vistas are scenic wonders and belong in our visual heritage. It is a plea to save some of our best geologic exposures for future geologists, tourists, and artists.
