Little knowledge is available that considers the effects of continuous miner position on the possible respirable dust exposure of the remote mining-machine operator. Such information could be very useful for increasing the awareness of the remote operator as to those parts of an extended cut that generate higher levels of respirable dust. This data could be used to develop guidelines for positioning the remote operator to reduce his potential exposure. This work details the effects of continuous miner position on dust levels measured on the machine and at the remote continuous miner operator location.

Formation of commodity agreements depends mainly on the economic instability and associated mitigation measures inherent in the economic conflict between more developed and less developed nations. Five types of possible agreements exist: futures market, buffer stock, restrictive agreement, multilateral contract, and compensatory finance. Lack of market separation between sulfur consumers and producers coupled with large world production and highly concentrated export production in theory suggest a restrictive agreement as most likely. In practice, stockpiling of sulfur, an informal buffer stock, as done in Canada and perhaps the Middle East, has been the main sulfur price-supporting mechanism in the past two decades. No commodity agreements involving sulfur now exist except for multilateral contracts. Sulfur agreements apparently have existed rarely, if at all, in the past. Law (1975) refers to sulfur as one of a group of commodities where "there have been additional control efforts of various types." Clearly, sulfur was a candidate, at least conceptually in the past, for some form of commodity agreement. The following discussion centers on the world sulfur market from 1976 to 1985 in this context.

INTRODUCTION The concern of occupational exposure to diesel exhaust pollutants is an important workplace issue for the mining industry. During the last three decades of diesel operations at Inco, a significant amount of research and improvement has been made in the area of work environment, and effective diesel operation. This paper will review the experience gained by Inco's Ontario Division from the implementation and the use of modern engines, improved fuel quality, and the exhaust control technology, coupled with adherence to proper maintenance and ventilation design and practices. Past monitoring practices and the current occupational monitoring program at lnco are outlined. A major new research initiative involving multi-stake holders in diesel performance is described. MINING IN THE SUDBURY AREA The discovery of nickel-copper ore in the Sudbury area dates back to the year 1856. The existence of this orebody was noticed when a strong compass deflection was observed by a provincial surveyor. This discovery, even though documented in official re- ports, failed to arouse any public attention at that time. In 1884, a rock-cut was blasted through a small hill near the village of Sudbury to permit laying track for the Canadian Pacific Railway (Boldt 1967). The rock-cut uncovered a body of massive sulfides with a copper content of over nine percent. The mineralization is concentrated along the outer margin of the Sudbury Basin, an oval-shaped structure having a dimension of 55 x 95 kilometres. The ore extends down-dip to to at least 3000 metres below the surface. The mining methods at lnco can be divided into two categories: "filled-stope" and 'bulk" mining. This division, in the broad sense, may also reflect the environmental conditions of the mine. In the past, the selection of a mining method was based on the size, shape, grade and the strength of the ore and its surroundings. The recent development of improved technology and mining equipment permitted wider application of low cost bulk mining methods. UNDERGROUND DIESEL EQUIPMENT The first diesel-powered machine, a 145-horsepower scooptram, was put into operation in March 1966, in a cut-and-fill stoping complex at Frood Mine. The number of diesel machines underground in the Inco, Ontario Division, mines was increased to 360 units by 1971,550 in 1977 (Rutherford 1978), and over 830 diesel-powered units in 1995. The following list indicates current mobile diesel equipment. LHD 194 Loaders 81 Trucks 28 Jumbo Drills 78 Personnel Carrier 101 Service Equipment 155 Locomotives 50 Bolters 30 Scissor Lift 113 About 20 percent of the LHD and truck units are equipped with electronic fuel controlled engines. COMPOSITION OF DIESEL EXHAUST Diesel exhaust contains hundreds of pollutants (Watts 19921, including components of unburned fuel and lubricating oil and products of incomplete combustion of the fuel and oil. These pollutants are emitted either as gases or as particles. Gaseous pollutants include carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur ox- ides, as well as a variety of organic compounds, such as hydro- carbons, aldehydes, and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons. The particle phase, also known as diesel particulate matter (DPM), is the filterable portion of diesel exhaust. Figure 1 depicts the trimodal particle size distribution that arises from different mechanisms of aerosol generation (Cantrell and Rubow 1992). Primary combustion aerosols, including diesel exhaust aerosol, are formed as very small particles (in the 0.001 to 0.08 micrometre range), but physical mechanisms such as condensation and coagulation quickly transfer the aerosol mass from the nuclei mode to the accumulation mode. These processes result in a mass median diameter of approximately 0.2 micrometres for diesel particulate matter, and 90% of the particles are less than 1.0 micrometre in size. These particles have a high surface area, permitting the adsorption of different substances produced during combustion. Mechanically generated aerosols, on the other hand, typically contain particles greater than 1 micrometre in diameter. The particle phases of diesel exhaust contain three components (Bagley, et al, 1996) shown by Figure 2, namely: a carbon- aceous fraction composed mainly of solid-carbon particles, a sulfate fraction containing small hydrated sulfate particles, and a soluble fraction that contains compounds that are soluble in organic solvents and are adsorbed or condensed onto carbon core particles. These compounds consist primarily of higher molecular weight hydrocarbons and PAH's and may contribute 15% to 45% of the weight of the total particulate matter (Schuetzle, 1983). The control of these pollutants is necessary to ensure a healthy work environment. This work is a follow-up to previous research that attempted to predict the location of spontaneous heating episodes in underground coal mine pillars. The objective of the original work was to see if the data obtained by commonly used detection methods could accurately predict spontaneous combustion episodes in coal pillars. Data accumulation during the study was enhanced when a spontaneously generated fire occurred within one of the pillars being examined. The fire provided researchers with realistic data that could be used to determine if fire prediction was possible. Results from the initial study found that the atmospheric status equations that were used provided little advance notice that combustion would occur where it did. This study reevaluated the accumulated data by applying it to recently developed equations and compared these results with previously obtained information to determine if a combination of these techniques could more effectively predict impending combustion.

Treatment of bentonite clay with mineral acids yields a modified clay product of high surface area and acidity that exhibits enhanced adsorptive and catalytic properties. A highly specialized segment of the clay industry based on this process has evolved into a worldwide business with a capacity of about 500 kt/a. This paper will present data on the chemistry, mining, manufacturing, and applications for acid-activated clays.

Uranium and its decay series are associated with phosphate deposits of marine origin. Uranium concentrations are on the order of 100 to 200 ppm in matrix from the Bone Valley formation of Central Florida and about 25% this value in matrix mined from the Hawthorne formation in North Florida. Occupational radiation exposure due to this source has been under study in Florida since the mid 1970's (Windham, Partridge, Horton 1976; Roessler and Prince 1978). This report is based on findings of an industry-wide scoping survey conducted by the University of Florida during March 1976 through May 1977 and subsequent studies in selected individual facilities. PHOSPHATE MINING OPERATIONS Mining and beneficiation operations are diagramed in Figure 1. At the excavation site, electric powered draglines remove the overburden and expose the phosphate matrix (ore) which is then slurried and pumped to the beneficiation site. At the washer stage of the beneficiation plant, the matrix is subjected to washing and screening. A coarse product, "pebble" is produced and sent to storage piles while the fine fraction is passed through a series of cyclones to remove the clays. The generated clay suspension is sent to settling ponds while the remaining sand-sized fraction is sent to the flotation plant. At the flotation plant, phosphate particles are recovered from the fine sand particles of similar size through several stages of treatment with reagents, agitation and separation of floating and sinking fractions. The high grade concentrate produced is transferred to storage while the sand tailings are discarded. [ ]

At Henderson Operations the 24-kilometer conveyor system consists of three main conveyors with lengths of 1.2 km, 16.7 km and 6 km. Upon commissioning of the conveyor system, the Henderson maintenance department was challenged with the inspection and monitoring of over 50,000 idlers. To take a proactive approach to idler maintenance, an idler tracking database system was developed. Using the idler tracking program, the Henderson Crush & Convey department now has the ability to provide data for engineering solutions to idler problems and to manage thousands of idlers for priority replacement work and warranty purposes. Recognizing the potential for injury to Henderson employees in the process of idler handling, Henderson approached idler replacement as a material handling process. Material handling solutions have resulted in failed idlers being replaced and discarded from the underground environment without ever touching a human hand. This paper will detail how Henderson tracks idlers in all primary conveyor belts and how an innovative idler handling system can result in reduced risks to conveyor maintenance employees.

"Federal regulations require that refuge alternatives (RAs) are located within 305-m (1000-ft) of the working face and spaced at one-hour travel distances in the outby area in underground coal mines in the event that miners cannot escape during a disaster. The Mine Safety and Health Administration mandates that RAs provide safe shelter and livable conditions for a minimum of 96 hours while maintaining the apparent temperature (AT) below 35°C (95°F). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health used a validated thermal simulation model to examine the mechanisms of heat loss from the RA to the ambient mine and the effect of mine strata composition on the final internal dry bulb temperature (DBT) for mobile tent-type RAs. The results of these studies show that most of the heat loss from the RA to the ambient mine is due to radiation (51%) and conduction (31%). Three mine width/height configurations and three mine strata compositions were examined. The final DBT inside the RA after 96 hours varied less than 1°C (1.8°F) for the three mine width/height configurations and less than 2°C (3.6°F) for the three mine strata compositions. INTRODUCTION Following a mine disaster, workers will try to escape the mine. If their escape is futile, they can take shelter in a refuge alternative (RA). In 2008, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) mandated RAs in mines to ensure that a safe and livable shelter is provided for a minimum of 96 hours, and that the apparent temperature (AT) does not exceed 35°C (95°F) inside the RA [1]. An ongoing concern with RAs is the potential to exceed this limit. The temperature rise inside an RA is due to the metabolic heat released by the occupants as well as heat released by the carbon dioxide scrubbing system. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) tested a 10-person tent-type training unit RA in its Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) to investigate heat buildup in RAs. The 10-person capacity for the tested RA is based on 1.4 m2 (15 ft2) of floor space per miner. NIOSH-developed simulated miners, which are heat input devices that generate both sensible and latent heat, were used to represent the metabolic heat generation of an average miner (117 W) for testing in the SRCM. It was found that the number of occupants in an RA may need to be reduced based on the ambient mine temperature, which varies from mine to mine [2]. To further research temperature rise inside an RA, ThermoAnalytics, Inc. (TAI) was contracted by NIOSH to perform thermal simulations of the tested 10-person mobile tent-type RA. TAI developed a thermal model of the SRCM using RadTherm software, which incorporates a human thermal model (HTM) to represent the equivalent metabolic heat loss of a miner within the RA’s enclosed environment. The thermal model was previously validated by comparing simulation results with test results [3]. During a mine disaster in which miners would have to take shelter in an RA, mine ventilation may not be available. As such, mine ventilation was off for both the testing in the SRCM as well as in the simulations. This paper discusses the heat loss mechanisms and the effects of mine strata composition and mine width and height associated with a ten-person tent-type RA."

Relatively simple techniques have been developed which enable the electrochemistry of sulfide minerals to be studied with particles varying in size from above 100 pm to less than 1 pm. Both oxidative and reductive processes have been studied wing the minerals pyrite, arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite. It has been shown that it is possible to completely oxidise or reduce the minerals during a single voltammetic sweep. The resulting voltammogram produces peaks which are characteristic of each mineral and can be used to qualitatively identify the minerals. In the case of chalcopyrite, it has been demonstrated that the charge involved in the anodic oxidation can be quantitatively related to the amount of copper dissolved. Quantitative information can be obtained using peak fitting techniques. Interesting differences in the behaviour of the minerals in sulfuric and hydrochloric acids have been observed, particularly in the case of pyrite for which a second major peak is obtained which has been attributed to the oxidation of elemental sulfur in the presence of chloride ions. The technique offers the possibility of providing mineralogical information of individual particles based on an electrochemical voltammetic finger print.

To establish meaningful remediation goals and monitoring programs in areas disturbed by mining and associated industries, it is desirable to determine the natural concentrations of metals that existed in these areas prior to being disturbed. In mineralized areas, multiple natural populations of metals and associated components may be present. This paper describes a method for characterizing the natural background chemistry by means of probability distribution dia¬grams. The method can be applied to water, soil and other natural materials. In a study of a complicated hydrogeologic system at the Kennecott Utah Copper North and South Operational Areas near Salt Lake City, UT, probability distribution diagrams were used to differentiate between natural background waters and waters impacted by human activities. The probability distribution diagrams allowed a component-by-¬component interpretation of the chemistry of ground¬water and surface water over a large geographic area. Natural chemical background populations and anthro¬pogenic effects were identified Although the method is illustrated for mining-related sites, the same approach can also be used for other natural and anthropogeni¬cally impacted sites.

The favorable economics of conveyor based haulage, especially in moving large volumes. has long been acknowledged. This has given impetus to significant developments over the last two decades in conveying systems and equipment. Such developments have resulted in improved equipment and system reliability, versatility and mobility. The present writing presents conveyor systems and their variations. Long overland conveyors of various profile and plan layout are considered along with various typical support systems. This includes discussion of horizontally curving, two-way and booster driven conveyors. High Angle Conveyors-[HACs] are reviewed, citing in-pit as well as plant application. Finally, several important advances in idler and in pulley design are presented.

Blast vibrations induce sounds within neighboring residences. A house wide vibration and sound monitoring system was installed in a West Virginia home which was subjected to blasts at varied distances and direction. Eighty-nine blast events were monitored and analyzed for this case study. Fifteen channels of data were collected including three triaxial geophones, one airblast microphone, one uniaxial geophone mounted to the wall of the house (response channel), and four microphones that recorded CD quality sound waves inside the house. Each of these channels was recorded on the same time reference and scale allowing for direct comparison of the waveforms. The response channel signal was easily separated into ground vibration induced and airblast induced movement due to the differences in their times of arrival. This response channel was then compared to the sounds recorded inside the home to determine which component of blast vibration induced the maximum sound response inside the home. Blasts at distances less than 762 meters (2,500 feet) had maximum sound responses from both ground vibration and airblast. While for blasts beyond 762 meters (2,500 feet), the maximum sound response inside the home was caused by ground vibration without exception. When airblast was identified as the dominant sound generator in the house, the peak amplitude of the sound was directly related to the amplitude of airblast. When ground vibration was identified as the dominant sound generator in the house, the peak amplitude of sound was not related to the amplitude of ground vibration. In these cases, sound amplitude was driven by the conditions present in the house such as loose items, doors, and windows creating sudden peaks from falling or slamming. In the same respect, sound amplitudes varied depending on where the sound was recorded. Different rooms generated very different sounds based on the contents of the room. Findings from frequency analysis showed that the frequency content of sounds inside the house were not related to frequency content of airblast or ground vibration regardless of source suggesting that residents would have difficulty determining the source of blast induced noise in their homes.

INTRODUCTION The U. S. mining industry experienced a severe recession in the early 1980's. This resulted in the realization that the domestic mining industry had to compete on a global basis and only the strong or the low-cost producers would survive. The economic viability of a mining company not only depended on maximizing mineral recovery but also on its ability to do so at minimum cost. Companies had to become more productive not only by cutting costs, but also by developing and/or evaluating new technologies in existing or new plants. Several innovative concepts, including in-pit crushing and conveying, fine crushing, improved classification equipment, flotation, column flotation, pressure filtration, etc., have been developed in recent years. This paper addresses the impact of new flotation concepts and equipment on mill design. MILL DESIGN PHILOSOPHY Modern mill design, especially for large capacity plants, has its foundation in minimizing capital and operating costs. Capital costs can be minimized by minimizing the various components of the capital cost: infrastructure, equipment, instrumentation, structural, initial spare parts costs, etc. All these costs are minimized by simplifying the mill design and/or process flowsheet. The simplified process flowsheet, where applicable, consists of a single stage primary crusher followed by a semiautogeneous - ball mill grinding circuit to produce feed for a flotation circuit. Multiple flotation circuits have been eliminated in most cases. These concepts minimize the cost and encourage the use of large capacity equipment while maintaining optimum metallurgical recovery. The philosophy of mill modernization/modification is generally driven by the desire to increase the mill capacity within the limits of the existing mill building. This need is facilitated by using large size flotation equipment and eliminating multiple parallel flotation circuits in order to minimize capital and operating costs. Conventional flotation machine development has paralleled this mill design philosophy. FLOTATION CELL DESIGN Since froth flotation has been the most widely used separation process for over half a century, one would expect that it would be possible to design and select flotation machines for specific applications based on scientific principles. But this has not been the case. Best judgment, experience and personal prejudice have played a key role in equipment selection. These factors, along with the difficulty of evaluating new concepts in commercial plants, has slowed progress in implementation and commercialization of innovative ideas and/or equipment. Conventional Flotation There have been no major technological advances in conventional flotation cell design in recent years. A recent flotation cell survey indicates that 'larger flotation cells are still the order of the day.”(1) A comprehensive review of design of flotation machines indicate that they have been mechanically redesigned and are generally simpler and easier to maintain and less expensive to manufacture. (2,3) The approximate chronological development of conventional cells from the 25 cubic foot cells to the 3000 cubic foot cells, which were recently installed at the Copperton concentrator of Utah Copper, is given in Table 1. Larger flotation cells are the obvious choice for new plants or plants looking for expansion because of the following reasons: • They have lower capital cost per unit volume • Installation costs are generally lower because fewer units require less space • Maintenance costs are lower because of fewer mechanisms • Power requirements (HP/ton dry feed) are generally lower • with increased flotation cell size as illustrated in Table 2 [Table 1. "The development process of Metal Resources Technical and Economic Evaluation Expert System (MRTEEES) is introduced in the aspects of requirements analysis, design of the expert system, main functions of the expert system and features of the expert system. The system is based on C/B/S mixed mode and uses ASP.NET technology with .Net Framework being chosen as the development platform and metal resources database providing data support at the bottom layer. The system is an auxiliary management system for metal resources technical and economic evaluation and has the basic functions of auxiliary decision analysis, metal resources database management, data management and comprehensive query. Technical and economic evaluation model can be set up by users independently according to at which stage a project is, mainly including exploration stage, development stage and production stage, and according to the mining methods, for example underground mining, surface mining and in-situ leaching mining. Then, the technical and economic evaluation parameters can be generated. By inputting the value of each parameter in a simple and convenient way, the evaluation results can be directly calculated out and shown in the form of diagrams among others, and feasibility evaluation report can also be automatically generated, making the technical and economic evaluation process accurate and efficient. As the system can achieve the functions of scenario analysis, sensitivity analysis, shareholder’s returns analysis, horizontal comparison of different projects, it can improve the ability of project senior decision makers for rapid response to the rival and meet the demand of pricing negotiations. IntroductionWith the arrival of a new round of industrialization upsurge in both developing and developed countries, growth of demand for metal resources is entering a new stage. Population involved in the new industrialized countries is about four times that of all previous industrialized countries, implying resource consumption increases dramatically both in speed and in quantity. It is a must to seize the strategic opportunity of developing and utilizing metal resources around the world to lay abundant resource base for national industrialization. Objectively speaking, global configuration of metal resources is an inevitable tend. Presently, many issues, for example, resources exploration, mining, merge of mining companies, metal trades, mining financing, etc., generally show the feature of globalization. For the reality that competition for metal resources is becoming fiercer, industry standards of mineral resources will undoubtedly be improved. Occupying large scale mineral resources with high grade and developing them with low cost is the base for the survival of mining companies and metal resources merchants. With the growing demand of global investment in mineral resources exploration, which is at the upstream of the industry chain, geological exploration industry is promising. Globally building market relationships for mineral resources exploration companies is key to their sustainable development. Developing large and super-large deposit with low cost is also an important approach to enhancing core competence of a country or an enterprise. Mining companies around the world are rushing to purchase mineral resources globally. However, in different countries, economic, financial and tax systems for mineral resources vary greatly, and mining and processing techniques, technical parameters and equipment selection also change a lot. Thus, pro-phase research work is necessary for feasibility evaluation of mineral resources projects and it can be time wasting if taken in the traditional way. In many underground mines the excavated ore is produced during the blasting process. Drilling machines that are used to drill the blastholes, where later the explosives will be mounted, are crucial for this task. In order to optimize the currently used techniques, great emphasis is placed on increasing the efficiency and safety of blasthole drilling operations. The natural consequence is the development of monitoring systems and algorithms for processing operational and historical data. In this article, we present the result of the analysis of drilling data carried out as part of the IlluMINEation project. The paper proposes an algorithm for work cycle detection for drilling machines, together with the estimation of general operating parameters and diagnosing the drilling process on the basis of long-term data. Based on the available data, selected components of the drilling cycles have been indicated. Several approaches based on the parameters of the defined cycles are proposed. These approaches can be used in the future to create a full-fledged system for examining the effectiveness and safety of mining drilling rigs.

Defining classes of ore using geostatistical methods that match historical classifications has presented problems in the past. A simplistic and practical approach to this problem is presented. An example of the approach is presented using a porphyry-type system as a case study. The technique described uses area of drill-hole influence and known conditions from similar deposits, or the production history of the deposit being studied. It provides a practical bridging mechanism for defining the class of ore on a block-by-block basis using the error of estimation value developed during kriging. The approach provides a filtering method that refocuses attention on the adequacy of drill-hole spacing.

INTRODUCTION The state of the art of soft-ground tunneling was discussed in detail by the senior author at the 7th International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering held in Mexico City in 1969. Little can be gained by repeating the information assembled at that time. Hence, in this report, only the briefest summary will be given of the overall state of the art and attention will be concentrated on trends and developments since 1969. A characteristic of recent developments is the continued trend toward use of shields and excavating machines. The implications of this trend with respect to design and construction, and particularly with respect to the treatment of unfavorable ground conditions, will be examined. Settlement associated with lost ground, a subject as old as tunneling itself, will be reviewed and methods will be considered for its reduction. Design of tunnel supports was discussed in detail in 1969 with respect to essentially rigid or essentially flexible types of linings. In this report, a definition of flexibility will be considered and design procedures suggested for linings of flexibility intermediate between the two extremes.

Outlined is a review of the application of new selective chelating reagents as flotation collectors; calculation methods for the selection of chelating structures, limitation of the function of commercial chelating agents as collectors, and the synthesis of two new classes of chelating collectors with mixed aliphatic-aromatic structure for oxidized lead-zinc ores. Prior to 1974, bauxite-producing countries were poorly informed about important aspects of the bauxite/alumina/aluminium industry. This placed them at a disadvantage in negotiations over the development of the industry with interested parties. Since the formation of IBA, its member governments have acquired a fuller awareness of the structure and operation of the industry. The role of IBA is to enlarge the relevant information base of member governments, to act as a forum for the exchange of information on the industry and to form a focal point for multilateral discussions on problems in the industry with corporate interests and with governments of consuming countries.
