Following a year of great uncertainty, the political situation in Bangladesh improved during 1976. The major problem for Bangladesh remained the high birth rate and crowded conditions. Bangladesh had the highest population density of any agrarian country--over 80 million people in a land area of 144,000 square kilometers, 65% of which is considered arable. The Government, with considerable foreign assistance, was actively encouraging voluntary family planning, and set a growth rate target of 2% per year or less. However, even if the growth rate was reduced to the target level immediately, the population of Bangladesh would nevertheless nearly double within 20 years.

Experiments were made in a semicontinuous unit to provide engineering data for designing experimental continuous systems . These systems would be used to study the hydrogasification of hvab coal and char (from lowtemperature carbonization ) to high - Btu gas . In experiments at 800 ° C and with a coal residence time of several seconds , yields of hydrocarbon gases increased from about 2,000 scf / ton of maf coal at 250 psig to 7,000 scf at 1,000 psig . With 15 minutes residence time , yields increased from 8,000 scf/ton of maf coal at 250 psig to 17,500 cubic feet at 1,000 psig . In all cases , small quantities of heavy oils were produced along with the gaseous hydrocarbons . Production of oils could be minimized with a corresponding increase in gaseous hydrocarbons by increasing the retention time of the volatiles within the hot zone . Yields of gaseous hydrocarbons from char were slightly greater than from coal under similar conditions . Although the hydrogasification reaction is very pressure dependent , substantial quantities of coal (40 to 60 percent ) could be reacted to gaseous hydrocarbons at pressures as low as 50 psig provided reaction temperatures were increased to 1,200 ° C. It was also demonstrated that a hvab coal could be hydrogasified continuously without incurring agglomeration . This was achieved by dispersing coal in a relatively large reactor with concurrent flow of hydrogen . At 1,000 psig and 800 ° C , it was possible to react about 35 percent of the coal and to produce a gas containing up to 52 percent methane .

Measure tattling in cemented backfill when installation of bore-hole extensometers is not feasible. Problem To evaluate the amount of load that backfill carries during pillar recovery, information about how much the backfill settles after placement is often required. However, the composition of some backfills makes them difficult to drill and the installation of borehole extensometers almost impossible. Approach Bureau researchers have developed a vertical fill extensometer that can be cast in place as a stope is being filled. It consists of a baseplate, sections of steel pipe enclosed in loosely coupled polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe, and a top anchor assembly that contains a displacement transducer (fig. 1).

An experimental degasification program using a vertical borehole and vacuum pump to drain gas from the gob area of a longwall panel was successful at Bethlehem Mines Corporation, Cambria Division, No. 33 coal mine. Sixty-one million cubic feet of methane has been exhausted during a 9-month period. Daily production time in the panel increased as a result of lower methane levels in the returns. Removal of large quantities of methane in this way and the exclusion of it from the ventilating system will provide reduced cost in mine ventilation and provide a safer environment for the mine.

The mmber of petroleum refineries in the United States decreased during 1949 from 375 to 367 while the total crude-oil charging capacity of refineries continued to increase. A gain in the through-put capacity of 257,305 barrels daily raised the total to a new high level 6,696,300 as of January 1, 1950. The capacity of the average refinery to process crude-oil increased during 1949 from 17,171 barrels daily to 18,246. The four coastal refinery districts accounted for 178,900 barrels or 70 percent of the total capacity increase and the Illinois-Indiana- Kentucky district 57,950 barrels, or 23 percent. Slight declines in capacity were reported in the Texas Inland and the Arkansas-Louisiana Inland districts. The capacity building on January 1, 1950, 145,600 barrels daily, was less than half the amount under construction a year earlier. Most of the new construction involved enlargement of existing refineries and was confined to the East Coast and Indiana-Illinois-Kentucky districts. Two new refineries, however, were under construction, one in Oklahoma and the other in Texas. The shut-down capacity increased for the first time since 1946, and the 473,302 barrels daily reported on January 1, 1950, was the largest recorded since January 1, 1938. The only refining district showing a decline in the shut-down capacity was the Appalachian No. 2 district. The largest increases were reported in the Texas Gulf, Indiana-Illinois- Kentucky, California, and East Coast districts. The operating ratio of the petroleum refining industry, as indicated by dividing the January 1950 runs to stills of 5,483,000 barrels daily by the total installed capacity January 1, 1950, was 81.9 percent, compared with a ratio of 87.8 percent at the beginning of 1949.

The recovery of phosphate rack from the ores in the land-pebble district of Florida is a simple washing and screening operation. In the gashing plants coarse phosphate only is saved. Log-Washer overflows and screen-undersize products containing an appreciable content of fine phosphate are discarded. The phosphate grains in the material discharged to waste are generally finer in size than the mesh--14 to 20 mesh or 0.346 to 0.03 inch--of the finest screen in the washer. The operators state that the washers ordinarily recover from 50 to 60 per cent of the phosphate content of the matrix mined. Any increase that can be effected in the recovery of phosphate would be of advantage to the industry and would conserve the mineral resources of the country. In considering possible methods that might increase the recovery obtained in phosphate-washing plants the application of flotation, if it could be successfully developed, seemed to warrant investigation.

"Welfare endeavor in connection with both the metal and the coal mines of Utah has shown gratifying progress during recent years, and in most mining towns of the state, both the operators and their employees deserve much credit for the efforts put forth to better the living, working, educational and recreational conditions. Progress has been and is being made, but there are still a few important towns where purer water and better sewage disposal are pressing needs.In the older metal-mining towns that are incorporated and are independent of the mining properties operating in the vicinity, less opportunity is presented for the companies to exercise efforts looking toward improved welfare conditions than in company towns controlled by the mine operators.However, even in such towns the companies can do much to better welfare conditions, as shown by the progress in Bingham Canyon during the past several years. The Utah Copper Company has spent $800,000 since 1920, in the erection of modern brick cottages, apartment houses and the Germnell Memorial Club. The cottages and apartment houses have every convenience to be found in up-to-date city homes. The Gemmell Memorial Club erected and equipped at a cost of $175,000 was provided by the company for the benefit of the Utah Copper employees living in the canyon and has been made the recreational center for the camp. Another improvement is the $100,000 fireproof hotel built by the United States Mine of the United States Mining, Smelting and Refining; Co. in the Copperfield section of Bingham Canyon. This hotel will accommodate 105 men exclusive of hotel help and has all the conveniences of a city hotel."

Assure fail-safe stopping of a mining vehicle immediately following a loss of electric power. Approach A separate emergency brake system which actuates when electrical power is interrupted, was installed on several mining vehicles and tested in a long-term underground mining demonstration. How It Works Separate, spring-actuated brakes, which press against brake discs, are used to stop the vehicle following power failure. To allow norm al movement of the vehicle, hydraulic oil under pres? sure from the vehicle's hydraulic system is directed to a spring? loaded piston in each emergency brake housing. That pressure causes the piston to compress the spring and relieves the spring pressure against the puck, thereby allowing the brake disc to turn freely. See Figure 1 A. If the electrical power fails or if the machine is turned off, a valve in the hydraulic line to the emergency brakes opens. That valve, shown as ?Solenoid Valve (automatic)" in Figure 1, which is normally held closed by its electrical solenoid while the vehicle is electrically powered, is opened by the spring in the valve assembly. Control surface stream loss by identifying and selectively sealing water loss zones in stream channels overlying underground mines. Approach Electromagnetic terrain conductivity surveys, coupled with stream gaging, are performed within a stream channel to identify saturated fracture zones associated with loss of stream water. This information is used to target locations for the injection of expandable polyurethane grout. The grout is injected two to three feet beneath the surface of the strcambed, across each loss zone, to seal the fractured strcambed and restore stream flow across the damaged area. How It Works Multiple zones of infiltration (natural and induced) normally exist in stream channels overlying mined areas, causing water handling and/or acid drainage problems in the mines as well as loss of stream flow. It is typically difficult to accurately locate these loss points. Therefore, Conventional methods of stream repair, such as using plastic membranes or clay and rock rip-rapping, are applied to long lengths of a stream channel. The two step approach developed by the Bureau of Mines First quickly and accurately locates loss zones using electromagnetic ground conductivity survey and gaging instruments. Conductivity is measured at fixed spacings (typically 25-50 ft depending on the instrument and desired observation depth), Ground conductivity increases when saturated conditions exist at depth. These apparent flow loss zones are confirmed by gaping, to eliminate possible effects due to unobservable metal debris adjacent to or buried in the stream sediment.

In connection with investigations being conducted by the Bureau of Mines regarding pulmonary disease which is prevalent among metal miners in certain districts , a large number of rock- dust samples have been collected , and have been examined in the Bureau's laboratories . The earlier work has been described in Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 105 , " Pulmonary disease among miners in the Joplin district , Missouri , and its relation to rock dust in mines " by A. J. Lanza and Edwin Higgins , 1915 , and in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 132 , " Siliceous dust in relation to pulmonary disease among miners in the Joplin district , Missouri , " by Edwin Higgins , A.J. Lanza , F.B.Laney , and Geo . S. Rice , 1919. The methods of collecting and examining dust samples have been greatly improved during the investigation , much valuable information having been made available by similar investigations conducted by the Miners ! Phthisis Prevention Committee , Union of South Africa . The latter are described in the " General report of the Miners ' Phthisis Prevention Committee , Johannesburg, Union of South Africa , 1916 " , and " Final report of the Miners ' Phthisis Prevention Committee , Johannesburg, Union of South Africa , 1919. " The investigations by the Bureau of Mines and the South African committee show that by prolonged inhalation of air containing minute particles of sharp and insoluble rock dust , the lungs retain sufficient dust particles to cause decided injury to the lung tissue , the injured lung becoming very susceptible to the development of tuberculosis .

In this Bureau of Mines investigation, production was monitored for 1 year at over 30 coalbed gas-drainage boreholes located in Alabama, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Results indicate that the quality of data gathered from such wells can be improved greatly if potential problems are anticipated and prevented in the early stages of well production. Major water-monitoring problems include solids buildup, freezing, the presence of gas in surface waterlines, and improper pumping interval settings. Such problems may be avoided by incorporating in the original well design waterline filters, sand screens, separator tanks, and systems to automatically control pumping intervals. Problems related to measurement of coalbed gas flow include large quantities of water vapor contained in the gas, especially during winter months; freezing and subsequent obstruction of flow; sudden, uncontrolled release of gas pressure; and solids buildup in metering equipment. The installation of commercially available items, such as filters, separators, and insulation, and the thoughtful application of a basic knowledge of coalbed gas reservoir characteristics will prevent most production-monitoring problems.

Problem: An average of three workers a year are killed in surface mining operations when a piece of haulage equipment collides with another smaller vehicle or a worker on foot. Another three workers are killed each year when haulage equipment backs over the edge of a dump point or stockpile. Devices to monitor the blind areas of mining equipment are needed to provide a warning to operators when a vehicle, person, or change in terrain is near the equipment. Method: A proximity warning system (PWS) based on the global positioning system (GPS) and peer-to-peer communication has been developed to prevent collisions between mining equipment, small vehicles, and stationary structures. Results: A final system was demonstrated using one off-highway haul truck, three smaller vehicles, and various stationary structures at a surface mining operation. The system successfully displayed the location of nearby vehicles and stationary structures and provided visual and audible warnings to the equipment operator when they were within a preset distance. Summary: Many surface mining operations already use GPS technology on their mobile equipment for tracking and dispatch. Our tests have shown that it is feasible to add proximity warning to these existing systems as a safety feature. Larger scale and long-term tests are needed to prove the technology adequately. Impact on Industry: A PWSs that incorporates a combination of technologies could significantly reduce accidents that involve collisions or driving over an edge at surface mining operations.

Gold continued to dominate mineral production in the group of volcanic islands and atolls of Melanesia in the southern Pacific Ocean, which comprise the British Commonwealth nation of Fiji. The Fijian mineral sector, however, remained of minor importance in terms of export earnings, Government revenues, and employment to the economy of the country, which was primarily agrarian with sugar as its mainstay. The Vatukoula gold-silver mine on the north side of the main island of Viti Levu remained the largest and most important mining operation, as well as Fiji's only operating metalliferous mine. In October, Western Mining Corp. (Fiji) Ltd. (WMCF), a wholly owned subsidiary of Australian-registered Western Mining Corp. Holdings Ltd., increased its interest in the Vatukoula joint venture from 10% to 20% by exercising its option with Emperor Gold Mining Co. Ltd., also of Australia. The assumption of mine management operations at Vatukoula in 1983, with its attendant influx of additional capital and technological expertise, enabled WMCF to increase both efficiency and output at the mine during 1984. Higher output was obtained owing to an increase in underground ore production, which was partly offset by a reduction in opencut tonnage, as well as to modifications in the recovery circuit. Rate of recovery increased from about 15% to over 82% of the gold contained in the ore and from about 40% to 45% of the contained silver.

A hygroscopicity tandem differential mobility analyzer (HTDMA) technique is used to determine size-effect of nanoparticles (NaCl, (NH4)2 SO4, KCl, NH4NO3, MgCl2,CaCl2) on their hygro­scopic properties (deliquescence relative humidity (DRH) and hygroscopic growth factor (GF)). The HTDMA system uses a combination of two nano DMAs and two regular DMAs to measure particle size change in a wide dynamic particle size range. Particles are subsequently analyzed with a transmission electron microscopy to investigate the potential effect of particle structure or morphology on the hygroscopic properties. We found that structural properties of NaCl and (NH4)2SO4 particles also play an important role in determination of the DRH and GF and are more pronounced at smaller diameters. Data show that the DRH of NaCl nanoparticles increased from *75% up to *83% RH at 8 nm and that their GF decreased with decreasing size. The extent to which the GF of NaCl nanoparticles decreased with decreasing size was greater than theoretically predicted with the Kelvin correction. The GF of furnace-generated NaCl nano­particles that have pores and aggregate shape was found to be smaller than that of atomizer-generated particles that are close to perfectly cubic. For the case of atomizer-generated (NH4)2SO4 nanoparticles, we observed no signi?cant size-effect on their DRH, and the measured GF agreed well with predicted values using the Kelvin correction. For furnace-generated (NH4)2SO4 nanoparticles, a gradual growth at moder­ate RH without noticeable deliquescence behavior occurred. Their TEM images showed that contrary to atomizer-generated (NH4)2SO4 nanoparticles the fur­nace-generated (NH4)2SO4 nanoparticles are not perfectly spherical and are often aggregates having pores and holes, which may favor holding residual water even in the dried condition. For atomizer-generated KCl, MgCl2, and CaCl2 nanoparticles, we observed no signi?cant size-effects on their DRH and GF for the mobility size as small as 20 nm.

1.0 FRAMEWORK FOR COMPARISON This document describes the decision factors that bear on the selection of the modulation process for the wireless underground medium frequency (MF) communication system. The selected modulation process must satisfy the Bureau of Mines stated objective of improving general communications within an underground mine. The improvement being sought includes the development of a wireless communication technology of measurable benefit to both mine safety and mine productivity. The improvement will allow wireless communications paths to exist between roving miners. The wireless communication paths will also be made compatible with the existing underground telephone system to extend paging and voice communication throughout the underground mine. The new wireless equipment will include man-pack, vehicular, repeater, and base station transceivers. Repeaters and base stations will feature coupling networks for interfacing with the existing telephone circuits. Frequency modulation (FM) and single sideband (SSB) modulation processes are analyzed in view of the special conditions associated with underground mining. Of primary importance is the tremendous electrical noise generated in an operating mine that could adversely affect communications quality. High noise coupled with high attenuation rate of near field signals forces the communication system to be inherently short range. Coal bumps have presented serious mining problems in the U.S. throughout the 20th Century. Fatalities and injuries have resulted when these destructive events occur at the working face. Persistent bump problems can result in abandonment of large reserves or lead to premature mine closure. Through the years, alternative techniques such as artificial supports, extraction sequencing, destressing, pillar design changes and specific pillar retreat practices have been successfully implemented to mitigate coal mine bumps. Several techniques have evolved for room-and-pillar operations that control the way the roof rock breaks, regulating the manner in which stresses are redistributed in the mined section. Special mine layouts employed in longwall mines have also proved to be successful in safely redistributing or containing excessive loadings. However, with ever increasing production rates, greater overburdens and new mining systems, the need to evolve even more effective bump control designs will continue to challenge the U. S. coal mine industry.

The Rickard mine in York County, S. C., named for the original owner, Alexander Rickard, was operated about 50 years as. No records are available of the quantity of corundum shipped. Pratt states, "Many tons were picked up from the surface and shipped." The mine was visited on August 6, 1943, by the author, accompanied by Gilbert W. Withers of Atlanta, Ga. Investigation of the property was begun by the Bureau of Mines after some initial work by the Mi-Cor Corp., a company organized by Gilbert P. Withers of Atlanta to explore the property. In conducting the Bureau program, 754 linear feet of trenches were dug, 110 feet of old drifts cleaned out and examined, and 38 feet of shaft retimbered.

The first thought in the case of an accident or contagious disease is naturally that aroused by our humane instinct , how serious is the case and will the person recover ? The economic effects of such cases , owing to their many ramifications , are seldom realized either by those directing mining operations or those engaged in the labor of producing . This paper is based on the accident experience of the State of Utah and the number of cases of two well known preventable diseases , typhoid fever and smallpox , in that State for the fiscal years 1917-1918 , 1918-1919 , 1919-1920 , and 1920-1921 . The data and figures presented are from coal -mining camps only . W. W. Adams , mine- accident statistician of the bureau, contributed valuable corrections and suggestions . The economic results of accidents are considered first , and those of the two preventable diseases later .

The design of retort interchamber pillars is important in determining surface stability over in situ retort mines and to the health and safety of miners, particularly with respect to possible escape of heat and toxic gases from retort chambers. Stress distribution in retort interchamber pillars, roof, and floor was examined with the aid of linear, finite-element analysis using data from experimentally determined mechanical properties. Properties determined included elastic moduli, strength, and creep constants in laboratory tests on core covering a 100-foot depth interval in the oil shale from the Piceance Basin in Colorado. The most critical stress concentration was found in the rib side of the interchamber pillar at a height above the floor line of 1.25 times the width. Guidelines for pillar design that consider pillar strength, creep, and retorting temperature effects are proposed.

The Spring Canyon Mine Rescue Association is a cooperative association supported jointly by five coal-mining companies located in Spring Canyon, Utah. The properties of mining companies the Carbon Fuel Co, Rains , Utah, the Liberty Coal Co. , Latuda, Utah, the Standard Coal Co. , Standardville , Utan, the Spring Canyon Coal Co. , Storrs , Utah, and the Peerless Coal Co. , Peerless , Utah about a mile apart and normally employ a total of 915 men , 733 underground 182 on the surface . and The Association was organized on July 5, 1921 , and Rudolph Clark, fomerly first - aid miner on U. S. Bureau of Mines Rescue Car 11 , was placed in charge. as manager . A board of directors made up of a representative from each of the cooperating companies (usually the mine superintendent ) is the governing body of the Association and the expenses are prorated on a basis of the production of each of the five mines . The Association maintains eight sets of Gibbs rescue apparatus and a motor truck fitted up as a combined rescue truck and ambulance . Additional apparatus are to be purchased . Standardville is the central camp in the canyon and has been made the headquarters of the Association . The apparatus are now kept and the truck housed in a small station, but plans have been prepared for a large station which will be built this summer . This new station will have a large apparatus room , a test chamber, a suitable room. for training, and a garage on the first floor, while above will be the living quarters of the manager . There is a good road through the canyon and the other camps are all within two and one -half miles of Standardville .
