The extremely sluggish oxidation of steel scrap was appreciably accelerated when the charge was pretreated in aqueous solutions of sodium metavanadate or sodium molybdate. The degree of oxidation acceleration was inversely correlated with the melting point of the promoter oxide possessing the highest valency. The magnitude of oxidation enhancement exhibited a systematic inverse dependence on the duration of pickling processes; mere dipping of the oxidizable charge in the vanadate bath was most effective. In general, the rate of steel scrap oxidation increased with increasing concentration of the pickling reagent. The results are explained on the basis of the hydrolytic decomposition of the pickling agent with subsequent slow interaction with the metal surface, coupled with the tendency of vanadium to form polyanions in alkaline media. The data not only served to elucidate the mechanism by which catastrophic oxidation takes place, but also showed that the accelerating species need not be alloyed with the oxidizable metal; surface impregnation by minute amounts of the accelerating species can still produce catastrophic effects.

Thls report summarizes work done under Bureau of Mines contract H0357100, "Development of a Crimp Connector for Trailing Cable Splices." The purpose of this effort was to establish optimum connector design conditions to meet flex cycle, pullout and electrical resistance criteria on phase power conductors. Field testing of "optimum design" connectors is briefly discussed. One of the primary objectives of contract H0357100 was to enable one to design better performing phase conductor connectors. Illustrating the practical significance of this 1s a discussion on the development of a new splice kit for trailing cables. The connectors in this kit were designed in accordance with the design methods described in the contract final report. Kit components, test data, and a connector installation tool are also discussed. The successful effort on the phase connector has resulted in contract H0377042, entitled "Design and Testing of Joining Sleeves for Trailing Cable Ground and Pilot Wires." The purpose of this contract (currently in effect) is to improve ground-conductor and pilot-wire performance. Significant findings to date are discussed.

SUMMARY The objective of this program was to develop a system to extinguish coal mine fires by remote sealing of the underground passageways. The system developed had to be versatile enough to function under a wide range of operating conditions, including large variations in passageway geometry, depth of mine, water conditions, both in the mine and at the surface, and rubble in the mine passage. The system developed had to include instrumentation for the remote probing of the passageway prior to sealing, a system for sealing the mine passages, and instrumentation for remote monitoring of the quality of the seal during and after construction. These objectives were successfully achieved during this program. The remote mine sealing capability of the system was satisfactc rely demonstrated in a field test conducted at the Eastern Associated Coal Corporation Federal No. 1 Mine in Grant Town, West Virginia. The remote sealing consists of: (1) A sonar initial probing system which can operate satisfactorily even in the presence of dense smoke. The system is capable of determining both the local passageway geometry, identifying the presence of cribs and other obstructions, and the position of the borehole in the mine passage. (2) A mine sealing material system which utilizes fly ash for making the complete seal or as a bulk filler in conjunction with a urethane, froth foam, seal topping system. The choice of using fly ash alone or fly ash with foam topping depends on a number of factors, such as quality of seal desired, time available per seal, depth of borehole, passageway geometry, and water holding require¬ment. The Bureau of Mines made a laboratory study of the amenability of anorthosite rock ( from the San Gabriel Mountains , Los Angeles County , Calif . ) to treatment by the lime soda sinter process for the extraction of alumina . The study was done under a cooperative agreement with the California Division of Mines and Geology . This report presents the results of the investigation , and it includes a review of the geology of the deposit ( 7 ) by Dr. Gordon B. Oakeshott . Interest in the recovery of alumina from submarginal aluminum silicate ores is stimulated by the fact that the domestic aluminum industry depends on imports of bauxite for its alumina requirements . Of the 8.0 million long dry tons of high - grade bauxite consumed in 1961 for producing metallurgicalgrade alumina , only 0.9 million long tons , or 11 percent , was mined in this country . During past years many organizations have carried out research programs to determine if alumina could be extracted economically from such domestic ores as clays ( 3 , 4 ) , anorthosite ( 8 ) , and other silicate sources . Successful alumina extraction is the ultimate objective of the Bureau of Mines program.

How It Works The stainless-steel enclosed transducer consists of a sensing head with circuitry, and a telemetry card. The sensor uses a patented ultrasonic technique to measure a form of turbulence created In the air. This turbulence, known as vortex shedding, is related to the air speed through the sensor. Air flowing past a cylindrical post creates vortices which flow down the air stream on both sides of the post. Pulses from an ultrasonic transmitter pass through the vortices to a receiver; the effect of the vortices on the pulses is a measure of air velocity. In the past, mine management has been concerned with removing water from active mining sections primarily because it hampered the movement of mining equipment and aggravated the working condition of the miners. Pumping water to sumps and gravity drainage by ditching have proven successful in mines for minimizing section down time due to water influx. However, with the advent of more strict pollution laws the mining engineer must now be concerned with keeping water out of the section and also with preventing it from causing pollution. A review of the handbooks and textbooks used in the mining engineering curricula reveals that little has been written concerning acid mine water prevention or control in underground coal mines. Additionally, the review of the curricula of mining schools indicates they are not teaching the engineering students the necessary techniques of mine water management as they relate to the abatement of mine water pollution.

The method for predicting coke strength developed at Steinkohlenberg-bauverein, Germany, in which experimental parameters are readily determined by small-scale laboratory tests, was found to be applicable to cokes produced from industrially used blends of American coals. Predicted 1-inch ASTM tumbler indices for four industrial blends were found to be in excellent agreement with the experimentally determined values. The laboratory determined prediction parameters include the proximate analysis of the coal the size consist of the coal, and Ruhr dilatometer test data.

Liquid-liquid extraction techniques were investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines for the fractionation of rare-earth solutions. Separatory funnel work using tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) for extracting ceric nitrate from solutions containing sulfate ion resulted in almost complete extraction. Similar tests using primary amines for splitting trivalent rare-earth pairs and fractions gave promising results. The ceric nitrate extraction procedure was scaled-up by use of pressure-bubbler equipment, a series of spray towers for extraction, washing, and stripping. In this case only 84 percent ceric nitrate extraction efficiency was achieved. This work was done using dilute sulfuric acid for stripping.

During the summer of 1973 we were asked to perform a theoretical investigation of the propagation of low frequency (LF) radio waves down deep (10,000 feet) hoistshafts* for the case where the hoist cable ("rope") is the only metal conductor present. Propagation is by means of the TEM coaxial mode of transmission in which the hoist cable serves as the inner conductor and the surrounding rock acts as the outer conductor. Since the rock is a relatively poor electrical conductor the current in the outer conductor of the coaxial line is not confined to a very thin surface layer as in a metal coaxial cable, but spreads radially to a distance that is generally many times the shaft diameter. This feature of the wave propagation requires a more sophisticated theoretical treatment than the approximate skin-depth theory that is adequate for metal coaxial lines. In this Part we treat the hoist shaft wave propagation loss, characteristic impedance, and the field current distributions in the surrounding rock medium. We also show that the large penetration of the wave into the rock outer conductor does not present a difficult problem with regard to coupling the transmitter or receiver to the transmission line with a minimum of insertion loss, but that the large impedance mismatch caused by the capacitance termination between the cage and shaft wall may well be the most significant contribution to overall system loss. Inductive coupling and impedance matching to the hoist rope/shaft transmission line are also treated briefly. Preliminary results indicate that a broad minimum in overall system loss should occur between 100 kHz and 1 MHz, possibly centered around 300 kHz. Further work is needed to better quantify this signal loss behavior, compare it with hoist shaft electromagnetic noise spectral data recently acquired by NBS, and identify the most favorable operating frequencies.

The theory of electromagnetic fields indicates such fields could be used to detect and locate trapped miners. To be useful, the hardware of the system must meet a number of requirements, including small size, intrinsic safety, and rugged construction. Such hardware has been built, and the system has been tested by the Bureau of Mines and its contractors. These tests indicate that the electromagnetic method provides a practical means to locate miners in emergencies.

The modest mineral industry of Afghanistan continued to suffer adversely from internal disorders that were essentially the result of the continued presence of elements of the armed forces of the U.S.S.R. Despite press reports near yearend intimating that the Soviets might reduce troop strength in Afghanistan, there were no indications of any significant numeric reductions. Indeed, there were clear demonstrations of heightened military actions along the Afghani-Pakistani border, including bombing raids on settlement sites for Afghanis within the territorial limits of Pakistan, actions hardly demonstrative of conditions indicative of Soviet withdrawal.

"In a cooperative study by the University of Minnesota and the U.S. Bureau of Mines, diesel exhaust and mineral dust concentrations have been measured for aerosols generated in the laboratory and in five underground coal mines. Three mines utilized diesel-powered haulage equipment and two used all-electric equipment. Two source apportionment techniques have been applied to differentiate between the mineral dust and diesel exhaust aerosol concentrations measured. The first technique, using a micro-orifice, uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI) for size selective sampling, is based on modeling aerosol size and the premise that the diesel exhaust portion of the aerosol is predominantly submicron and the mineral dust portion is mostly greater that one micrometer in size. The second technique, Chemical Mass Balance (CMB) modeling, was used to referee the analysis of diesel exhaust and mineral dust aerosol concentrations from the size selective sampling results.The MOUDI size distribution data were modeled to obtain parameters describing the fine and course fractions of the sampled aerosol and to estimate the contributions to each mode from both mineral dust and diesel exhaust aerosol sources. The results showed the size distribution of the mixed aerosols exhibited two definite modes with the minimum between the modes occurring at 0.8 µm. Less than 5 pct of the coal mine diesel aerosol was found in the coarse size fraction. CMB analysis confirms the original premise for using aerosol size to separate diesel exhaust and mineral dust aerosol during sampling.Based on the results from the size selective sampling, a personal diesel aerosol sampler has been developed for measuring diesel aerosol mass concentrations. Th.is sampler uses an inertial impactor to size separate the respirable aerosol at 0.8 µm. All material less than 0.8 µm is collected on an after filter for subsequent gravimetric analysis."

Approach A mine's chilled water supply cools fresh air enroute to hot working areas, in an improved, direct-mixing heat exchanger. How It Works Warm, fresh ventilation air traveling through the mine's ventilation tubing enters the lower portion of the cooler heat exchanger through a large round opening designed to accept the ventilation duct. This air flow is turned upward and evenly distributed by egg-crate lattice and pair guide vans at the bottom of the cooler. On the diagram, warm air enters at the bottom left. As the air moves upward through the cooler, it passes through a plastic or wire mesh pad which is arranged so that it offers the most resistance to upward airflow immediately above the cooler inlet: this more or less equalizes the upward air flow along the length of the cooler. The air next moves through the cold water sprays, and then through a wire-mesh demister pad before exiting from the cooler at the top right. Cooling of the air is accomplished in several stages. As the incoming air passes through the lower plastic or wire mesh pad, it is exposed to water flowing downward through the pad to the water sump. This is water that has fallen from the sprays or dripped from the upper wire-mesh mist eliminator. This water is slightly warmer than the spray water since it has already done some cooling,

Operating heavy construction equipment is often associated with elevated rates of low back discomfort (LBD). However, there have been few formal studies that dealt with evaluating controls that can reduce the LBD among these workers. The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using a continuous passive lumbar motion system (CPLMS) in reducing low back discomfort among operators of heavy earthmoving equipment. The CPLMS is an additional seat support that has a lumbar support bladder and a pump to provide cyclic inflation and deflation. Two groups of operators were identified as potential subjects for this intervention study, the intervention group with a mean age of 41.2 years and experience of 9.7 years used the CPLMS, and the control group with a mean age of 37.5 years and experience of 7.6 years did not use the CPLMS. Body part discomfort surveys were collected from both groups. In addition, the intervention group completed a CPLMS preference survey. The body part discomfort survey was collected up to eight days at three different times of the day. Results from the body part discomfort survey showed a decreasing trend the longer the CPLMS was used, for both the upper and low back region. A decreasing trend for the low back was also found comparing morning to evening discomfort scores across the days when using the CPLMS. When compared to their regular seat, 54% of the operators felt very comfortable in using the CPLMS, 36% of them wanted one for their equipment, and 54% showed interest in experimenting with the CPLMS for a longer time period. Results from this study indicate that the use of a CPLMS can effectively reduce the low back discomfort experienced by operators of heavy construction equipment.

The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting a cross-sectional survey of equipment sound levels and worker noise exposures in the stone/aggregate mining industry. Six stone/aggregate mines (three surface and three underground) were recently surveyed, and the findings (ire presented here. The surveys consisted of sound-level measurements conducted around various equipment and machinery (including stone processing and crushing equipment) and full-shift dose measurements to determine worker noise exposures. The findings identify the equipment and machinery that are likely to cause worker overexposures and identify the workers found to he experiencing overexposures. In addition, the benefit of cabs in reducing mobile equipment operator noise exposure is discussed.
