A table that greatly simplifies determination of metastable transitions in mass spectra has been prepared. All the mathematically possible metastable transitions of any compound whose molecular weight lies between 26 and 150 can be determined from the table without calculation. The method of utilizing the table is described, using selected peaks from the spectrum of normal butane for illustration. In the mass spectrometer, ions are formed in the isatron and accelerated through a series of slits. Most of these ions reach the collector without further change, but a few dissociate in transit to form new ions. These ions appear in the mass spectrum at neither the mass--to-charge ratio (m/e) of the original ion nor that of the new ion. Investigations at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station have shown that the satisfactory operation of aflame safety lamp depends not only upon proper design and assembly of the lamp but upon the kind of fuel used, and that much of the trouble experienced with permissible flame safety lamps at mines is due to the common use of motor gasolines, none of which is suitable in the present types of permissible flame safety laps. This report gives the results of a limited study to determine what satisfactory fuels are available, the specification limits of such fuels, and to suggest modifications of assembly and care of the lamps to improve performance with any satisfactory fuel.

As part of its thermodynamic investigations of mineral compounds, the Bureau of Mines has written an algorithm based on Newton's method for solving for the characteristic Debye temperature of a compound, from heat capacity and temperature data. A listing of a FORTRAN IV program based on this algorithm, for calculating Debye temperatures given heat capacities or for calculating heat capacities given Debye temperatures, is available from the author upon request.

An anhydrous chlorination process has been developed by the Bureau of Mines for the production of copper, ferric oxide, and sulfur from chalcopyrite. The first part of the process is a chlorination step in which elemental sulfur and a mixture of iron-copper chlorides are produced. This paper describes the second step of the process in which the copper and iron chlorides are reacted with oxygen to selectively convert the iron chloride to ferric oxide and chlorine leaving the copper in the chloride form. The chlorides are pulverized and dropped countercurrent to a flow of oxygen in a vertical 20-cm-diam. reactor at 800° C. By leaching with brine, the copper chloride may be separated from the insoluble iron oxide and reduced to copper powder by electrowinning. It has been demonstrated that 70 to 80 pct of the iron can be converted to oxide in a single-stage operation with a chlorine content in the offgas of 80 pct. After removal of the oxygen, this chlorine could be recycled to the chlorination step. A two-stage operation will convert 98 to 99 pct of the iron in the mixture to insoluble oxides. The offgas from the second stage contains 70 pct chlorine.

The Bureau of Mines investigated ground support problems in four major block-cave mines to assess the current "state-of-the-art" and to delineate areas for future research. The most significant problem is the inability of present support systems to hold moving ground. Further, as mining progresses to greater depth, this problem becomes more serious. Providing adequate temporary support capable of withstanding primary and secondary blasting is the next most significant problem. A detailed analysis of the effect of mining methods on support problems is also recommended for future research.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has tested a personal dosimeter for measuring radon decay products that is manufactured by Tom Scurry Associates. The tests were made to determine the accuracy of the dosimeter system for record keeping of radiation exposures to radon decay products encountered in mining. The radioactivity-detecting head is based on a design developed by the USBM, and the associated air pump was developed by the manufacturer. The dosimeter system was tested in the USBM radon chamber. The detecting head uses CaF:Dy thermoluminescent phosphors and is mounted on a self-regulating air pump. Batteries supply power sufficient for an 8-h shift. The dosimeter system is worn on the miner's belt. Dosimeter calibration tests were performed by the USBM. In addition, the pumps were tested and evaluated under continuous flow conditions. The results of these tests indicate that the Tom Scurry Associates Model DOSI600 dosimeter is suitable for general use in mines where record keeping for natural radiation exposure is required.

Most of the estimates are based on nine months data. These summaries have been prepared in cooperation with State geological surveys or related agencies. This publication is intended to be of value to the mineral industry in establishing and maintaining effective programs for preventing noise-induced hearing loss. Factors involved in this loss and the need for and the requirements of an effective hearing conservation program are discussed. The legal and legislative history of compensation for hearing loss is briefly reviewed. A review of statutes is not attempted since several States have recently modified) or are in the process of modifying their laws regarding permissible noise exposures) required hearing protection) and/or compensation for hearing loss. A review of other aspects of the problem of industrial noise in terms of medical, physiological) and psychological frames of reference is included. A hearing conservation program is described in detail. Appendixes detailing the names and addresses of a few equipment suppliers are included. References are provided for those who may wish to delve more deeply into the medical, technical, and scientific considerations of noise and its effect on man.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 144 natural gas samples from 19 States. Of the total samples, 139 were collected during calendar year 1990. The remainder were collected earlier, but releases granting permission to publish were not received until 1990. All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of the U.S. Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free-market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses were made by mass spectrometer and chromatograph.

During the 20th century, the increased emphasis on worker health and safety and the advent of new mining equipment and methods led to many changes in mine face ventilation practices. Efforts by government and private industry to improve and modify ventilation practices resulted in better health and safety conditions for workers. This article focuses on U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) research to examine factors that had a significant influence on mine face ventilation design during the past century. Several "milestone" events are discussed along with the impact they had on worker health and safety. Significant ventilation research efforts by government and private industry are presented. This brief ventilation history highlights innovative face ventilation designs and a consistent commitment to mining health and safety. Ventilation has always been a concern in underground coal mining. For many yeas, there was no appreciation of how ventilation could be used to remove harmful contaminants from the air or how to control airflow quantities. The first known problems with ventilation date back to the 14th century, when it was recognized that lack of air was a major impediment to the expansion of mines. The common method of solving ventilation problems at that time was to abandon the existing mine and start a new one nearby. Ventilation in the early days of coal mining was accomplished by means of a natural draft, created principally by a difference in the weights of columns of air between the intake and return openings. Later, in the 18th and 19th centuries, a furnace was introduced underground to increase the updraft in the return shaft. This allowed for a larger quantity of air in circulation. When mines went deeper and became larger, mechanical ventilation became necessary and was first accomplished by steam-driven fans. These fans became more prevalent as furnaces were prohibited in underground mines, especially after the Avondale disaster in Pennsylvania in 1869 (Roy, 1876). 1. Reserves have been estimated for three coal beds in Bledsoe County, Tenn.: Morgan Springs, Lantana, and Sewanee. The Richland and Nelson beds occur in Bledsoe County also, but there was not enough information on them for making an estimate of reserves. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves for all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 43 million tons as of January 1, 1954. Of this total, 22 million tons represents coal 28 inches and more thick. Areas in the beds were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics were insufficient for making an estimate conforming with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves deter-mined by this investigation.

This report summarizes the results of preliminary mineral-dressing studies by the Bureau of Mines on five samples of copper-bearing ore from various Alaska de-posits. The work on each sample was not extensive enough to warrant individual publication. The results, however, indicate the possibilities and limitations of concentration of the respective ores. The information therefore may be helpful in future development of these ore bodies. Four of the five samples tested were submitted to the laboratory by engineers of the Bureau of Mines as part of the examinations and survey investigations of strategic-mineral deposits in Alaska. This program is conducted to assist development of mineral resources in the Territory and particularly to aid economic exploitation of marginal or complex ores. The fifth sample was submitted by engineers of the Defense Minerals Exploration Administration.

In this report, a description of mine practices, the preparation of roof bolts for laboratory experiments, the results of tensile-strength determinations, and a discussion of results of these tests are presented. Certain restrictions are recommended for roof bolts subjected to repeated bending, and two methods of complying with these limitations imposed by the restrictions are presented. The practice of bending steel roof bolts for installation in areas where the height of the opening was less than the length of the bolts required to support the immediate roof adequately has been adopted recently in several coal mines in lieu of sectional rods designed for that purpose. In addition, a few of these same mines have been reclaiming the bent rods and reusing them numerous times. The purpose of this study was to determine if these practices decreased the strength of such bolts and thus jeopardized the safety of the men working in these mines.

Computation of the thermodynamic properties of the reaction products in the deflagration of explosive gas mixtures has been a most valuable guide regarding the possible kinetic mechanisms of homogeneous combustion processes. Knowledge of the physically possible end states is indispensable for understanding observed deviations from equilibrium in heterogeneous combustion. However such information on dust flames is entirely lacking. To complement a Federal Bureau of Mines study of stationary graphite dust flames burning in pure oxygen,6/ this report gives examples, at atmospheric pressure and room temperature, of composition profiles in an idealized oxygen-dust flame, with both mass and enthalpy being preserved. Similar profiles can be obtained from the data of the paper for elevated temperature and pressure.

Mineral production was of minor importance to the country's economy, and Bangladesh was not a ranking world producer of any mineral commodity in 1980. Natural gas was the most important mineral exploited, and reserves were sufficient to allow a significant increase in its use. A greater proportion of the domestic heat and electrical energy needs could be filled by increased production and distribution of natural gas. Also, the export of natural gas was feasible either by pipeline to India or in the form of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Some nonmetallic minerals could be developed, as well as coal and peat, given sufficient capital investment. Bangladesh's strongly agricultural economy made fair progress in 1979.80.1 The major harvest of November-December 1979 turned out to be better than had been anticipated after an early drought left poor planting conditions. During the 7-1/2 years (January 1945-June 1952), immediately preceding enactment of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act, 26 major disasters3/ in the coal mines of the United States caused the deaths of 491 persons. In the next 7-1/2 years under the act (July 1952-December 1959), only 12 major disasters occurred. The total killed was 148. This improvement is commendable. However, the continuing frequency of minor fires and gas and/or dust ignitions in the Nation's coal mines, many of which could have been of major consequence, are cause for serious concern to the coal-mining industry and those affiliated agencies engaged in promoting safety in the industry. The data presented in this report have been prepared to make available to the coal-mining industry and related groups an overall perspective of the disaster potential from mine fires and gas and/or dust ignitions in coal mines after 7-1/2 years under the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act. This act, effective July 16, 1952, which amended the original Federal coal-mine investigative act of May 1941, provides under Title II certain enforcible mine-safety provisions designed to prevent major disasters caused by explosions, fires, inundations, and man-trip and man-hoist accidents in coal mines that employ 15 or more individuals underground.

During the summer of 1943 the Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation and program of churn drilling on the McIlhon and adjoining Pearson land in the Mineral Point district of Iowa County, Wis. Sixteen holes, aggregating 1,570 feet .of bore, were completed. The work was undertaken as part of a general investigation of the zinc-and lead-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin at a time when great effort was being made to increase the production of Metals important to the war program. The Bureau's drilling program supplemented a previous drilling pro-gram conducted by the Vinegar Hill Zinc Co., and demonstrated the presence of a strongly mineralized zone at relatively shallow depths.

Beside many other damaging effects of acid mine drainage, corrosion of pipe lines and pumps frequently adds much to mine operating costs. Not only is it often necessary to install special and relatively costly acid-resistant materials, but even these may require frequent replacements. It is not unusual for ordinary steel pipe to last only a few days in some highly acid waters, while other common materials, though more resistant, frequently last only a few weeks. In the spring of 1935, local PWA authorities offered to assign a number of persons to various problems under the direction of regular employees of the Bureau of Mines. It was believed that at least some simple tests on as many different kinds of acid-resistant pipes as could readily be obtained might produce interesting and valuable information for the mining industry. This paper describes the tests and some results that have since been noted.

As part of its effort to reduce the environmental impact associated with mining and metallurgical operations, the Bureau of Mines used a modified form of the Environmental Protection Agency's Extraction Procedure toxicity test on copper reverberatory slags that contained low, medium, and high levels of the impurity elements As, Pb, Sb, Bi, and Zn. All tests resulted in extracts that did not exceed those limits published in the May 19, 1980, Federal Register; there-fore, these solid wastes were designated as nonhazardous for most landfill disposal situations. However, arsenic and lead levels disturbingly close to the allowable limits--and even higher levels of copper and zinc, for which there are no established limits--leached from the high-impurity-element granulated slags. These slags should be handled in such a way so as to minimize the possibility of water contamination. One baghouse dust was tested according to the EPA procedure and found to exceed the extract limits by a factor of 10. This solid waste may be considered hazardous.
