During the present war emergency, under the urge of the Federal Government to store coal, the following; questions are arising n the minds of coal users: (a) Will the coal lose any of its heating value in storage? (b) Will it slack and give a smaller-size coal? (c) Will its burning characteristics change in any way? (d) Will it catch fire from spontaneous combustion? (e) What precautions should be taken when storing coal? In regard to the loss of heating value of coal in storage, tests made by the Bureau of Mines show that the loss commonly has been overestimated. Various types of storage tests were made on New River, Pocahontas, Pittsburgh Gas, and Sheridan Wyoming coals. Data from experiments and literature on gas and dust explosions in closed vessels are presented to show the effects of the vessel size and shape; the initial pressure, temperature, and turbulence; and the fuel-air ratio and the strength of ignition source on pressure and rate of pressure rise. An attempt is made to correlate some of these parameters with an elementary mathematical model. Analyses of data on 17 vessels--spherical, cubical, cylindrical, and rectilinear in shape--ranging from 0,018 to 905 cubic feet in volume were made. Although the study was initiated to provide information primarily on dust-explosion phenomena, some data were obtained for gas explosions so that the factor of initial turbulence caused by the pneumatic blast used to disperse dust could be evaluated. The mathematical interpretation of the explosion phenomena was in general accord with the experimental data, and correlation was obtained for several factors affecting explosion development. Neither vessel size nor shape affected maximum pressure (when heat loss was neglected). The rate of pres-sure rise decreased as vessel size increased, and the rate was proportional to the ratio of the surface area of the vessel to its volume. Induced initial turbulence markedly increased the rate of pressure rise and slightly increased the maximum pressure. Changes in initial pressure produced proportional changes in maximum pressure and rate of pressure rise. Initial temperature and maximum pressure were inversely related, but initial temperature had little effect on the maximum rate of pressure rise. Comparative experiments showed no appreciable difference in explosion development of gas and dust fuels. The vessels and experimental work are described, and all data are given in tables. The mathematical model will facilitate extrapolation from laboratory to industrial conditions and will allow comparison of results obtained in different laboratories.

The potential for roof fails in underground mines remains a clear and present danger for mine workers An investigation of ground conditions in nearly 50 percent of the nation’s underground stone mines fold that the slate of roof stability is primarily determined in a limited and subjective manner. These large-opening mines with roof heights typically 7 m (23 ft) or more, make physical observation difficult. Although some mines use monitoring techniques to gain additional information an roof stability, this practice is usually short term and localized to address ground conditions in a particular section or part of the mine. A roof-fall hazard-assessment techniques was development based on engineering judgment acquired from extensive underground stone mine experience and on exanimation of the related literature. This technique utilizes observational processes to determine roof fall likelihood Case-study scenarios offer a realistic picture of model implementation. Providing the mine level decision-maker with an accurate assessment tool to ascertain the level of ground fall hazards is expected to reduce mint worker injuries and fatalities Moreover; the presences of danger can be overcome with a clear picture of quantified ground conditions.

The U.s. Bureau of Mines is conducting research to optimize the utilization and design of mine roof support systems. This report describes methods to evaluate resultant loading on longwall shields, defined as external resultant vertical and horizontal force acting on the canopy and base. Four models are considered: two rigid-body models, an elastic model, and a numerical model. The rigid-body models equate measured internal shield forces to unknown external resultant shield forces (loads) through rigid-body analysis of static equilibrium requirements. The elastic model develops a solution to shield mechanics by evaluation of the load-displacement relationship and stiffness characteristics of the support structure. The numerical model is a two-dimensional finite-element representation of a shield structure. Model determination of resultant shield loading is compared to controlled loading of a shield in the Bureau's mine roof simulator. Parameters investigated are shield height, canopy contact configuration, canopy and base horizontal constrainment, and boundary conditions imposed by vertical and horizontal shield displacements. It is concluded that rigid-body models are most applicable to in situ measurement of shield loading. Applications requirements and potential error sources are discussed.

The Bureau of Mines customarily publishes lists of equipment meeting its safety standards to keep the mining industry informed as to the development and availability of mining equipment that can be used safely. The present list supplements Bulletin 543, Permissible Mine Equipment Approved to January 1, 1953, as well as Information Circular 7722, Permissible Mine Equipment Approved During the Calendar Years 1953-54. Because standards have been revised and new ones added by the Bureau, this list contains classes of equipment not previously covered.

Water-based epoxy sealants were examined during a 2-year period to deter-mine their effectiveness as barriers to radon release in uranium mines. Radon emanation rates from uranium ore samples were monitored for extended periods in the laboratory before and after sealant application. Reduction of radon flux due to the coating of laboratory samples was approximately 80 percent. Test chambers in a dormant uranium mine were monitored to determine both short and long-term barrier effectiveness. These field studies of the seal-ants indicated radon flux reductions exceeding 50 percent relatively soon after application and nearly 75 percent about 1 year later. An unexpected complication to early monitoring in the form of a large radon emanation increase, believed due to added moisture, is discussed.

Timber decay is due largely if not wholly to a fungus growth on the timber from which it derives' food; a warm, moist atmosphere is necessary for rapid growth. The decay is spread from infected timber to sound timber by countless microscopic spores or seeds given off by the fungus growth and carried by air currents or by long, cottonlike threads, which spread from timber to timber. Haulage roads in most mines in the central coal fields are also return aircourses; hence moisture and temperature conditions are ideal for the rapid decay of mine ties and mine timber. Possibly the return air, which contains a higher percentage of carbon dioxide than normal outside air, also stimulates the growth of fungi. Those familiar with coal mining have observed the more pronounced growth of fungi and decay of timber in poorly ventilated worked-out sections of mines where the air is moist and where usually the percentage of carbon dioxide in the air is considerably above normal.

Bench-scale studies were made on a reductive hydrometallurgical procedure to convert chalcopyrite flotation concentrate to copper metal or a readily leachable sulfide. Reductive conversion of chalcopyrite and dissolution of iron and sulfur were accomplished in hydrochloric or sulfuric acid solution by the addition of metallic copper, iron, or lead. Use of metallic copper as the reductant enabled extraction of 95 and 46 percent of the iron and sulfur, respectively. The products were ferrous iron, hydrogen sulfide, and a copper sulfide. Use of metallic iron or lead as the reductant enabled extraction of 95 percent of both the iron and sulfur. The products obtained with metallic iron or lead were ferrous iron, hydrogen sulfide, and metallic copper.

Many of the rare-earth oxides are now commercially available in pure form and they have a variety of potential technical uses. Thermodynamic data for these oxides, however, are rather sparse. It is one of the functions of the Bureau of Mines to fill the need for this type of information. This report gives the results of low-temperature heat-capacity and high-temperature heat-content measurements by the Bureau of Mines of lanthanum sesquioxide. The entropy at 298.15° K. was evaluated and heat-content and entropy increments above 298.15° K. were obtained to 1,800° K. The results were combined with the known heat of formation at 298.15° K. to derive heats and free energies of formation at higher temperatures. Sufficient information is now available to permit reliable thermodynamic calculations involving lanthanum sesquioxide within the temperature range 298° to 2,000° K.

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Spokane Research Laboratory, are investigating technology and methods to monitor the blind areas around large haulage equipment used in surface mines. On average, six fatalities a year can be attributed to equipment colliding with other vehicles or pedestrian workers, or backing over the edge of a dump point. Several off-the-shelf technologies exist for monitoring areas that an equipment operator cannot see from the cab, including radar, video cameras, and radio signal detection systems. NIOSH researchers have tested many of these systems on large dump trucks both at their test facility and at surface mines. This article discusses the technologies available for this application and their effectiveness in detecting objects near an off-highway dump truck. Also, guidance is presented for mine safety personnel who are planning to evaluate collision warning systems or cameras on their haulage equipment. Available Technology Over the past few years, the number and types of systems available for monitoring the blind areas around heavy equipment have increased. "INTRODUCTION The first ten papers of the series on smelting in the lead blast furnace described the operation at the custom smelter of the International Smelting Co., Tooele, Utah, and at the plant of the Bunker Hill Smelting Co., Kellogg, Idaho, which handled a very rich lead concentrate. These previous papers may be considered a picture of the traditional lead smelter treating custom ores and of the smelter that will treat the type of product likely to be made in the future - lead concentrates of an increasingly rich grade.The great plant at Trail is of special interest to those smelting lead products containing much zinc and faced with the necessity of transforming all of their byproducts into commodities which may be sold profitably. The plant is equipped to produce electrolytic zinc, lead, copper, silver, bismuth, and cadmium. Part of the sulphur evolved from treating the ores is converted into sulphuric acid. Complete fertilizers for agricultural purposes are also produced.The smelter of lead ores has long considered that zinc is one of the most difficult ingredients that he has to handle. Even with the gretat improvement in flotation practice today, the residues from electrolytic zinc plants leaching zinc concentrates must still be smelted for their lead content. Of the total gangue material not separated from the lead concentrate sent to the smelter, zinc is still one of the most notable in percentage. The most successful way of coordinating the over-all operations of a concentrator, an electrolytic zinc plant, and a smelter provided with a plant for re-treating the blast-furnace slag for its lead and zinc content must be of interest to many treating complex ores.ACKNOWLEDGMENTThe data in this paper were collected in cooperation with the Consolidated Mining & Smelting Co. of Canada, Limited, and its entire technical staff. "INTRODUCTION The asphyxiation or poisoning of workmen in underground mines by noxious gases from blasting in adjacent strip mines can be prevented.Considerable progress has been made in eliminating or reducing hazards to the health and safety of underground workmen in anthracite mines, but seldom does a year pass without reported cases of underground workmen being poisoned by the fumes from blasts of explosives in strip-mining operations. In the early days of the anthracite industry, the coal near the surface was only partly mined, and many small stumps of pillars and barrier pillars were left standing; these pillars are now being recovered by stripping. It has become necessary to give more consideration to the effects of blasting at strip mines upon the quality of the air in underground mines adjacent to stripping operations.Special precautions are taken by the .personnel of the Jeddo-Highland Coal Co., whose mines are near Jeddo, Luzerne County, and near Centralia in Columbia and Schuylkill Counties in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania, to prevent asphyxiation of workmen by carbon monoxide or other toxic gases resulting from blasting in strip mines. The procedures established by the Jeddo-Highland Coal Co., are given in this circular so that others may benefit thereby and thus avoid hazards to underground workmen where mining is carried on under similar circumstances."

"The basic population balance models for agglomeration processes are reviewed and procedures are described for extending their applicability to systems with size-dependent rate constants and to the formation and growth of porous agglomerates from rigid, solid-particles. Simplified procedures for the further extension of the models to include simultaneous agglomerate growth and breakage are also described.INTRODUCTION The association of small particles into clusters or agglomerates is a significant factor in many facets of particle processing. Agglomeration processes are widely used to facilitate handling, storage and utilization of fine powders. Processes such as coagulation or flocculation are used to aid solid-fluid separation in dispersed particulate systems. Agglomeration also occurs as an accompaniment, often unwanted, to other particulate processing operations such as fine grinding, mixing and blending, transport and flow.Reliable agglomeration models are needed for improved understanding of the processes in general and of the complex role of numerous, interacting variables as well as for direct application to the design and control of industrial processes such as flocculation, granulation and pelletization. Ideally, the models should account for the primary forces responsible for agglomerate formation and growth, the effects of external forces on process dynamics, the development of agglomerate structure and its role in the process itself, and the effects of concurrent processes such as structure modification (e.g. compaction) and agglomerate breakage or degradation."

An improved mathematical model with the attendant computer program to calculate multiphase fluid flow in petroleum reservoirs is presented. The model is used to simulate the behavior when a fluid is used to displace hydro-carbon fluids in a reservoir. The method is an expansion of a previously published method, in Bureau of Mines RI 7011, but handles constant injection rate as an alternative to constant pressure. Program documentation is provided along with thorough explanations of the added program features. Using the program, the petroleum engineer can calculate oil recoveries for different flood patterns and operating conditions and select the conditions most likely to optimize recovery. Experience with the previous model demonstrated the need for the improvements in order to simulate reservoir behavior more accurately. The improved method will result in improved oil recovery. In this paper, the significant improvements are described in detail so that anyone interested can put the program to use.

The Veta Chica and Cerro Colorado chromite deposits of the McGuffy Creek area, Siskiyou County, Calif. were selected as worthy of investigation by the Bureau of Mines in accordance with the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939. These were two of many chromite deposits examined by engineers of the Bureau of Mines during their extensive wartime mineral examination and exploration campaign. Exploration by the Bureau of Mines consisted of 2,234 feet of diamond drilling, surface trenching, and sampling during the months of May and June 1942.

In view of present interest in a revival of gold mining enterprises, papers dealing with the development of small gold properties are apropos. The present paper deals with the operation of a small gold property in the exploration and development stage, mining and milling 25 tons of ore daily, and indicates what may he expected in the way of mining costs under northern climatic conditions, by practicing rigid economy, at a property where disproportionate overhead costs are unavoidable bacause of the small rate of production. The output of this prospect is treated in a small amalgamation plant which has been described in a previous circular.. HISTORY Prospecting in the district was begun in 1909, and by 1911 the adjoining mines, Hollinger and McIntyre, were in operation. Actual work was begun on the Rochester claim in July, 1922, and carried on through 1924. The property was closed until 1928 when the present company took it over, together with the other holdings of the Canadel Mining Co. A small mill was started as a pilot plant on March 24, 1929, and is still in operation.

While less than 1% of reported accidents are associated with slope stability problems, slope failures were responsible for about 15% of all U.S. surface mine fatalities between 1995 and 2001. Small rockfalls, which may involve hand-sized rocks weighing only a few kilograms, can cause fatal injuries to workers away from the protection of large machinery. Massive highwall failures containing a million cubic meters of material or more can be fatal even for heavy equipment operators. As part of an ongoing study at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, several remote-sensing technologies are being evaluated as tools to monitor slopes for hazards and to assess slope stability. Field tests of a hyper spectral imager were conducted to assess its value for improving geologic maps of potentially unstable alteration zones on mine slopes. An interferometric radar device capable of detecting very small displacements on slopes awaits final assembly and field testing. Computerized monitoring methods using images from digital and video cameras are being assessed for application to mine slope surveillance. These and other techniques will eventually provide new tools to augment current methods for monitoring ground control hazards in mines.

The characteristics of gas-phase detonations were observed in 20 instrumented firings within earthen tunnels, in 100 such detonations in a 24-in-diam by l63-ft-long steel pipe, and in about 200 smaller scale firings. Most of the fuels studied were representative hydrocarbons--acetylene, propane, gasoline, and a roughly equimolar mixture of methylacetylene, propadiene, and propane. In a pipe with two closed ends, the detonable limits were demonstrated to be very nearly the same as reported limits of flammability. The side-on impulses (pressures integrated over 200-msec intervals) were shown to be the same function of concentration regardless of whether deflagration or detonation had occurred. In a pipe with only the initiation end closed, the impulses of all fuel-air systems tended toward the same level when averaged over comparable ranges of fuel concentration; the lower pressures with saturated hydrocarbons were nearly compensated by longer durations of pressure transient. In all fuel-air systems, unexpectedly high impulses were obtained with slightly lean mixtures. In earthen confining structures, the impulse, of the explosion was efficiently converted into momentum of the failing wall. In the configurations studied, an earth velocity of about 20 fps was critical to overcome the soil's resistance to shear. The destructive effect was determined by gas pressure rather than by total energy release. The assignment of a "TNT equivalent" to an explosive gas mixture is discussed in terms of the confinement of the mixture.

Simple chemical spot tests for the identification of major alloying elements in aluminum-base alloys are described. The tests are suitable for use by nontechnical personnel working outside a laboratory. Tests for zinc, copper, manganese, and magnesium employ electrographic sampling methods and sample papers. Use of electrographic sampling in a test for magnesium in aluminum is made possible by using glass fiber filter paper. Differentiations between magnesium and magnesium-silicon alloys of aluminum and between aluminum-base and magnesium-base alloys are made by direct chemical solution tests. Description of a device for obtaining reliable electrographic samples is included. A sequence of testing for identification by alloy groups is given.
