The United States,-the largest nickel consumer in the world, produces virtually no nickel from domestic ores. Dependence upon outside nickel - sources and increasing strategic, importance of nickel focused the attention of the United States on deposits within its boundries. The most likely domestic sources of nickel are low-grade oxide and silicate deposits, such as the Cle Clum deposit, Kittitas County, Wash., and the Riddle deposit, Douglas County, Oreg. The Federal Bureau of Mines, Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory, Albany, Oreg. has been investigating electric smelting of low-grade oxide and silicate nickel ores. These smelting studies have been on selective reduction to produce low-carbon ferronickel. Selective reduction is based upon the relative reducibility of: nickel, iron, and chromium, in the order named, when the charge contains insufficient carbon or other reductants to reduce the entire quantity of these metals present in the ore.

In connection with its investigations of strategic minerals in the United States, the Bureau of Mines ran magnetic surveys totaling more than 533,000 linear feet at 30 deposits of magnetite in northern New Jersey. These deposits occur in a belt of granitic gneiss and in limited areas of limestone. The ore consists of magnetite accompanied by score of the following minerals: Hornblende, augite, apatite, feldspar, biotite, calcite, garnet and pyrolusite. Results of these investigations are being presented in two reports of which this is the second. The first paper, Certain. Magnetite Deposits in New Jersey, by A. L. Neumann and McHenry Mosier, was issued in April 1948 as Report of Investigations 4225.

The Bureau of dines present, an economic evaluation of its process for the ferric chloride leaching of chalcopyrite concentrate. In this process, chalcopyrite concentrate is leached with ferric chloride solution to extract copper, which is precipitated from the solution by electrolysis while leaving sulfur in the residue. Spent liquor from electrolysis is treated with oxygen to regenerate the ferric chloride leach solution and the sulfur-laden residue is processed to recover the sulfur. A cost estimate was prepared for a plant capable of processing 600 tons of chalcopyrite concentrate per day, 330 days per year. The fixed capital cost, on an early 1.975 basis is $27,831,600 and the estimated operating cost is 9.9 cents, per pound of copper product. In comparison, the estimated operating cost of a smelter equipped with a citrate process plant to recover sulfur is about 13.6 cents per pound of copper product. No charge for chalcopyrite concentrate or credit for recovered byproducts has been included in either operating cost. The ferric chloride leach process, therefore, appears to be economically attractive.

This report discusses in detail laboratory and pilot-plant tests conducted from January 1951 until January 1955 at the Northwest Electrodevelopment Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, Albany, Oreg., on defluorination and recovery of evolved fluorine from phosphate rock. Results of use tests of defluorinated phosphate rock by cooperating agricultural colleges and the United States Department of Agriculture are also included. In 1954 the consumption of fluorspar, the only domestic fluorine-bearing mineral of commercial importance, was approximately 478,000 short tons; 245,000 tons was from domestic mines. The production of marketable phosphate rock in the same period was about 13,800,000 long tons. Of this total amount, approximately 15 percent was produced in the West. From the viewpoint of conservation and utilization of fluorine as a natural resource, it is interesting to note that the total estimated quantity of fluorine in domestically produced phosphate rock is more than double that present in domestically mined fluorspar.

The Bureau of Mines determined demonstrated tin resources and costs associated with tin production in order to evaluate the potential for tin production from 18 market economy countries (MEC's). Data were collected from tin producers, in most cases during on-site visits. The analyses evaluated the relative economic and resource position of 146 mines, deposits, or regions in January 1984 dollars. The demonstrated resource of recoverable tin within the nations studied is approximately 2.8 million metric tons (mt). Of this total, over 73 pct is recoverable from the Southeast Asian countries of Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia, which in 1983 accounted for almost 60 pct of the world's tin production. Brazil has joined the Southeast Asian countries as a major low-cost, high-volume supplier of tin and is likely to continue to expand its production. Given the 1984 market structure, over 60 pct of the tin in demonstrated resources was economically recoverable. Historically, the International Tin Council (ITC) has helped maintain relatively stable tin prices through a buffer stock and sales quotas. In late 1985, exhaustion of buffer stock funds led to suspension of tin trading on the world's major tin metal exchanges.

A previous report of the Bureau of Mines* has supplied data for the physical and chemical properties of samples of crude petroleum produced in the eastern fields of the United States. It was issued as a preliminary chapter of a bulletin which is to cover the results of a survey of the entire country. The present report is a second preliminary chapter including figures that are available for the producing fields of the Rocky Mountain district. Work is being continued. with a series of samples from the States of Kansas and Oklahoma which will be described in a third preliminary chapter, to appear at a subsequent date. Acknowledgments. The obtaining of samples was rendered possible through the courtesy of representatives of a number of producing and refining companies operating in the Rocky Mountain district. The Bureau hereby acknowledges its appreciation of the hearty spirit of cooperation that was universally encountered.

A Fortran IV computer program entitled WAVE, which employs an explicit finite difference scheme for solving the one-dimensional wave equation for a time-dependent inelastic rock has been developed. The viscoelastic properties of the rock are represented in terms of a generalized Voigt model. The theory on which the computer program is based is rederived and a short description of the program is given. The computer program input instructions, a listing of the computer program, and example problems with required input and subsequent printed output are presented in appendixes. In the example problems) calculated results are free of spurious oscillations which occur in certain other methods of numerical calculation) notably the extended Ritz method.

Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7516, Bibliography of Investment and Operating Costs for Chemical and Petroleum Plants, was published in October 1949 to aid in estimating investment and operating costs of processes for manufacturing synthetic liquid fuels. Development of such processes by the Bureau of Mines was authorized by Public Law 290, 78th Congress. This bibliography included references to and abstracts of publications appearing from. 1930 to September 1948 on all processes in general use in the petroleum refining and chemical industries. Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7705, Supplemental Bibliography on Investment and Operating Costs for Chemical and Petroleum Plants, was prepared to cover the area from September 1948 through June 1952.

This increase in volatility is shown by a general lowering ref the average distillation rang, of about 2°F. During the post 10 years the Bureau of Mines has made semiannual surveys of the gasoline marketed in the United States, the survey just completed being the twentieth in the series. The 12 cities in which samples were collected have beer chosen as representative of the more important marketing territories, as it is obviously impracticable to obtain a sample of every gasoline sold in the entire country.]

The purpose of tins paper is not to present new date on the pressure losses due to bends and chances of area in mine openings through which air flows, but rather to correlate existing data, determined mainly on small duct systems and expressed in a variety of ways, according to uniform methods that facilitate their use in pressure-loss computations. These are required in such, air-flow problems as determining the quantity that will flow through is mine openings under a certain pressure difference or, conversely, the pressure difference that will be required to maintain a certain rate of flow. Air flowing through h ducts, such as mine airways, encounters resistance to flow due to interference of the individual air streams with each other caused by the wall surfaces. The result is that part of the kinetic energy of the flowing stream is converted to heat; and constant renewal of the kinetic energy from the total energy of the flow is required to maintain it. This process manifests itself by a decrease of the total pressure (static pressure plus velocity pressure; of the air in the direction of flow; in order that flow pray occur, there must necessarily be a differences in total pressure between the two cads of the air-ay equivalent to the pressure losses occasioned by the flow, which automatically adjusts itself in magnitude to the pressure difference maintained.

The Taylor's friction circle method for slope stability analysis can be extended to incorporate multiple circles defining the slip surface in a failure mechanism so that it is a workable method for bearing capacity calculations of foundations and rotational failures of retaining walls and similar structures. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has further extended the multiple-circle method to include friction in the material strength and to utilize computational schemes such that this method can be programmed with optimization capabilities rather than being used as a graphical or semigraphical method. Some examples are given that demonstrate ultimate bearing capacity calculations of embedded foundations with eccentric loads and nearby slopes.

The Mascot concentrator treats 1,900 tons of zinc ore per day by gravity concentration and flotation. During the year 1929 the heads averaged 2.90 per cent zinc, and the recovery was 90.15 per cent; the concentrates produced contained 60.19 per cent zinc. ACKNOWLEDGMENT Acknowledgment is made to M. Two methods are presented to determine the mechanical shaft torque as a function of time for an induction motor. The methods are based on the motor equivalent circuit and use as input variables of the motor terminal voltage, line current, input power, and power factor. One method uses all four variables and the other uses only voltage and current. The test data deals specifically with continuous miners, but the theory could be applied to other mining machines driven by multiple induction motors. Results are given for the tramming, maneuvering, cutting, and cutting with loading operations and are in the form of a minimum, a maximum, and an average of the shaft-torque time function. The theoretical development and computer implementation are discussed for both methods.

This paper describing the methods of ruining a sand, gravel, and bowlder deposit 20 miles east of Los Angeles, and the classification and preparation of these materials for market, is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on methods and cost of mining sand and gravel. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding, the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion anti study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations stall ensue. The description contained herein is typical of this industry in Southern California. ACKNOWLEDGMENT The author acknowledges tine assistance of L. L. "Experiments in the determination of friction factors for fan-pipe installations were carried on in a Butte mine during the fall and winter of 1922-23, under a cooperative agreement between the Bureau of Mines and the Anaconda Ccpper Mining Co. The results have been summarized in a separate paper,*** and this report, which is one of several giving more detailed data, discusses the methods used and the application of the results to fan-pipe practice.The use of canvas and galvanized-iron pipe, 8 to 20 inches in diameter, with small fans, usually electrically driven blowers, is an important factor in the ventilation of metal mines and is increasing in coal mines and long tunnels. In the Matte district the standard installation is an electrically driven small blower fan and 8 to 16 inch canvas pipe.The application of available data on friction losses in sheet-metal pipe to mine installations was doubtful, and very little has been published on canvas pipe, except general statements that the friction looses are greater than in galvanized-iron pipe. Experiments by Weeks and others,**** who determined friction losses under laboratory conditions for a few typical materials used in mine equipment, supported the statements.In 1918, one of the authors (Richardson) conducted tests for the Anaconda Copper Mining Cc. on the friction losses in canvas-pipe systems and the beet type of centrifugal blower for use with such pipe lines. He obtained the average total resistance per unit of length in use, without reference to the variable conditions of the lines. The results were of great value in developing more efficient equipment for average service conditions, and indicated that average friction losses for the commercial canvas tubing then used by the company were equal to or lees than these given for galvanized-iron pipe. Later on, the particular canvas tested was discarded for a heavier and more service-material."

As a part of a comprehensive survey of the Adirondack region, the Bureau of Mines, 1944 and 1945, conducted investigation of magnetic deposits at Dennemora, Russia Station, Redford-Clayburg, Standish, and the Ausable river region. Later in 1945, the Federal Geological Survey, started an aeromagnetic survey of the area and completed it in .1946. The Bureau of Mines extended its magnetic surveys in 1946 in the Redford-Clayburg area. In 1947 the Bureau of Mines .diamond-drilled throe holes in the Redford-Clayburg district. Clinton County has one active magnetite mine at Lyon Mountain and inactive mines at Palmer Hill and Arnold Hill, as well as along the Saranac River.

After more than 20 years dependence on bituminous coal as a primary fuel for generating electricity, the Pennsylvania Power and Light Company initiated a one-year study on the economics of building an electric generating station using anthracite as a fuel. The study will be completed in December 1976. If the feasibility study so indicates, PP&L will consider installing four 400,000 kilowatt generating units for scheduled commercial operation in 1985. Each unit would consume up to one million tons of anthracite annually. Anthracite generally is more difficult and expensive to extract than bituminous coal, but it has a significantly lower sulfur content than the bituminous coal currently being used by PP&L, thereby eliminating the costs of installing sulfur emission controls at generating stations. Moreover, significant reductions in transportation costs may be realized because the utility's operating territory is situated in the center of the anthracite region in northeastern Pennsylvania. These advantages may indicate that the use of anthracite is more economical than bituminous coal to PP&L. ASBESTOS -Asbestos production in the U.S. dropped again in 1975 until it was just two-thirds of that in 1973. This was in spite of the very strong demand caused by the Quebec strike. The 7-month strike of the asbestos miners in Thetford Mines, Quebec cut off 55 percent of the normal supply of U.S. consumers. Apparent domestic consumption was less than 75 percent of that in 1974. The wage settlement will probably result in a 20 percent increase in asbestos prices.

The Bureau of Mines investigated a geologically favorable area in the Beluga River coalfield in south-central Alaska to determine if there were sufficient minable coal reserves for onsite utilization to meet the projected thermal power needs of the Anchorage area. A program of diamond core drilling and sampling delimited a shallow saucerlike structure estimated to contain indicated reserves of more than 20 million tons of subbitminous coal in a seam over 50 feet thick that could be mined by opencut methods. A large sample of fresh coal was taken across the full width of the seam for washability studies. This sample, with 4 volume-percent of clay partings eliminated, contained 24.4 percent moisture and 16.8 percent ash and had a calorific value of 7,162 Btu per pound. The studies indicated that mechanical cleaning would be of doubtful value.

A guide to the development and use of an APL computer program for the analysis of load-flow problems is presented. The program is designed to provide an interactive method of load-flow study to improve underground coal mine electrical system design and safety. The theoretical basis for load-flow analysis is discussed, along with per-unit calculations which facilitate computation. Specific input/output, execution and network modification procedures are presented for using the APL program. In addition, typical results are given for examples taken from power system analysis literature.
