Gold and precious stones were mined in Egypt in prehistoric times. This mining, carried on at intervals, extended over thousands of years, until about 1300 A. D. Then ensued a dormant period of several hundred yoars. In the mean- time Europe made great rogress in mining practice, metallurgy, and geology and sent out various expeditions during the nineteenth century to investigate ancient mines. But the exploratory work produced no material results, and not until the beginning of the present century did actual mining recommence. The reopening of old gold mines in Rhodesia aroused interest in London and Paris, and these cities provided the capital necessary for the investigation of the ancient minee in West Africa and Egypt. Speculation resulted in the division of most of the uncultivated area of Egypt and the Sudan into huge concessions, and a number of expeditions were made; but after an unprecedented activity in West Africa, roaction set in, and the flow of capital ceased. On November 9, the Reynolds Metals Company cut production by 12 at its primary aluminum smelters at Troutdale, Oreg., and Longview, Wash., as a result of an earlier 25% power cutback by the Bonneville Power Administration due to lower than normal stream flow in September, the Aluminum Company of America had closed one potline at its Vancouver smelter because of the power cutback. Nearly 700 union workers at Anaconda Aluminum Company's primary aluminum smelter at Sebree, Ky., walked off the job when their contract expired or, November 15, after rejecting a proposed 3-year contract. The smelter has an annual capacity of 180,000 tons mid accounts for 50% of Anaconda's aluminum production. No talks are scheduled.

This Information Circular , one of a series published by the Bureau of Mines , reports on the methods and costs of mining and concentrating zinclead ore at the Highland Surprise mine in the Pine Creek area of the Coeur d'Alene region of Idaho . The mine is owned and operated by the Highland Surprise Consolidated Mining Co. , which supervises operations of the Nevada Stewart group of claims , which is adjacent on the northwest . These properties are at the extreme eastern end of a zone of fracturing that strikes northwest across the Pine Creek area . In fractures along this zone are the principal Pine Creek mines ; these are the Highland Surprise , Nevada Stewart , Sidney , Denver , V and Idaho , Liberal King , and Northern Light . Country rock at the Highland Surprise is argillite of the Prichard formation (Belt series ) . Fracturing has permitted the movement of mineral- izing agents that have replaced adjacent walls and crushed country rock with sulfides . Ore minerals are sphalerite and galena with accessory pyrite , chalcopyrite , pyrrhotite , and siderite . Three principal ore shoots were found on the Highland Surprise property . The Highland ore shoot was mined from outcrop to the 400 level . The Surprise ore body has been developed to a depth of 1,400 feet on the dip of the vein . The outcrop of the Surprise ore shoot was 150 feet long and 2 to 4 feet thick ; on the 1,150 ( lowest ) level , the ore shoot is 320 feet long and 10 to 17 feet thick , with good zinc content . Surprise ore shoot No. 2 occurs 250 feet west of No. 1 and has been mined from the 500 to the 1,000 level . From 353,000 tons of ore mined between 1910 and 1948 , the property has a recorded production of 256,000 ounces of silver , 7,500 tons of lead , 24,000 tons of zinc , and 412 tons of copper . Both shrinkage and cut and fill stoping methods are used at the Highland Surprise , but shrinkage is unsuitable for mining below the 700 level , because faulting has weakened the walls . Development of the Surprise ore , as well as exploration laterally and along the strike , is prosecuted steadily . A prospect heading is being pushed westward toward Nevada Stewart ground from the 700 level . The mill has a rated capacity of 275 tons per day and operates near capacity . Selective flotation makes zinc concentrate that is shipped to the Anaconda smelter and lead concentrate that is trucked to the Bunker Hill smelter at Kellogg .

This report presents the results of an investigation of comminution in tumbling mills. Five different topics involved with ball mill and rod mill grinding kinetics were studied and the results analyzed in terms of phenomenological size reduction and transport models. Continuous rod mill grinding was found to be characterized by high Peclet numbers which permit simulation to be carried out by several methods. The dry batch ball mill grinding of mineral mixtures showed that the breakage rates of the components were composition-dependent but time-independent and were normalizable with specific energy. Locked-cycle tests on mineral mixtures showed that a grinding circuit may take a long time to attain steady-state, during which time the composition of the mill holdings, and hence the breakage rates of the components, continuously changed. This study revealed that under plant conditions, grinding circuits can be in transience perpetually. The transport of mineral mixtures through drums was found to exhibit complex size and/or density-dependent segregation. However, the grinding media in a ball mill can eliminate such segregation, thereby simplifying the modeling of the continuous grinding of complex feeds. Wet batch rod mill grinding on single minerals divulged that the normalizability of breakage kinetics is valid for slurries of constant pulp density at different hold-ups but cannot be extended to slurries varying in pulp density.

More than 500 fires are now burning in abandoned coal waste banks and coal deposits in the United States. Once established, such fires can burn for decades, and extinguishing them by conventional methods such as surface sealing to exclude air, excavation to remove fuel, or flushing to cool the fire zone is usually difficult and always expensive. Burnout Control, a technique developed by the Bureau of Mines for the control of abandoned coal fires, involves the accelerated combustion of coal in place with total management of the heat and fumes produced. A burning waste bank or mine is placed under negative pressure relative to the atmosphere, and heat and combustion products are drawn from the combustion zone through an exhaust ventilation system. Heat produced appears as sensible heat in the exhaust, at temperatures as high as 1,000° C (1,832° F), and could be recovered for the production of steam, hot water, process heat, or electricity. The Bureau's first field demonstration of Burnout Control was at Calamity Hollow in Allegheny County, PA (near Pittsburgh). Calamity Hollow was the site of an underground mine in the. 1900's and was surface mined in the 1940's. In the winter of 1961~62, a fire of undetermined origin was discovered in the exposed coal. In 1963, the Bureau constructed a trench barrier around the fire and a surface seal over the affected area. The fire was isolated but, not completely extinguished. In 1979, when the Bureau began work on the Calamity Hollow Mine Fire Project to demonstrate controlled burnout, the fire was still smoldering on the hot side of the trench barrier. The project, which was begun in December 1979 and ended in July 1982, consisted of the design, construction, operation, and subsequent dismantling of a Burnout Control ventilation system. This report, although considered part 2, is actually the last of a five-part series that describes the Calamity Hollow Mine Fire Project. It was written last because it involved the analysis of a substantial body of data describing in detail the results of a continuous 4-month burnout operation. The first report, part 1, describes the design and construction of the field installation. Part 3 describes the instrumentation used to control and monitor the progress of the burnout operation. Parts 4 and 5 deal with the closeout phase of the field demonstration. Part 4 describes the procedure used to quench the fire, and part 5 describes the final excavation and backfilling of the heated zones. The reports in this series document the Calamity Hollow controlled burnout demonstration, which showed that (1) controlled in situ combustion is a feasible method for controlling underground fires in abandoned mines, (2) the resultant thermal exhaust output is suffIcient for energy utilization, and (3) water injection-fume exhaustion is a potentially effective method for cooling large underground fire zones. Further investigations of both Burnout Control and the water injection-fume exhaustion quenching procedure are planned.

The Federal Bureau of Mines developed a modification in the conventional Kroll process for preparing high - purity hafnium metal . This modification involved the partial replacement of magnesium by sodium in the batch reduction of purified hafnium tetrachloride to sponge metal . The raw tetrachloride was purified either by thermal degassing of the volatile contaminants to the atmosphere or by fused- salt treatment . In the fused- salt treatment , the tetrachloride was contacted with molten alkali chlorides to remove the impurities . The reaction byproducts were removed from the metal by heat treatment in an evacuated furnace . The metal sponge was consolidated by melting into buttons or ingots , which were analyzed for impurities . The purity of the metal prepared by the modified process is superior to that of the metal produced by the conventional method . The hafnium metal was comparable to crystal - bar hafnium except for the oxygen content , despite the abnormally high impurity concentrations in the raw tetrachloride . Several ingots were successfully cold - rolled to sheet .

Slip and fall accidents are a major cause of lost-time injuries associated with large mobile equipment in surface mines. An evaluation of the safety hazards associated with getting on and off large surface mining vehicles showed that most of the accidents occur at the point where personnel attempt to mount or dismount the machine at ground level. The major hazardous design conditions were identified as excessively flexible supports for lower steps or rungs, inappropriate ground-level-to-first-step distances, poor step designs, access designs that use vehicle components as steps or walkways, and inadequate hand- rail and guardrail designs, Additional hazards are introduced by the lack of proper maintenance of ladder hardware and the work practices of operators in carrying articles while mounting and dismounting the vehicle. This Bureau of Mines report describes the design and in-mine testing of improved access system for large mobile mining equipment.

"Eicosanoids and cytokines produced by alveolar macrophages (AM) are key mediators of pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis. In order to determine if eicosanoid production and cytokine production are altered in AM obtained from coal miners, we compared production of prostaglandin E2 (PCE2), thromboxane A2 (TXA2), leukotriene B4 (LTB4), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1B ), and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNfa.) by cultured AM from normal human subjects and coal miners. The recovery of AM from miners' lungs by bronchoalveolar lavage was significantly greater than that from control subjects. Mean eicosanoid and cytokine production by AM from active miners was also increased compared to AM from control subjects, but this increase was not statistically significant. AM from control subjects produced significantly more TXA2 and TNFa. when exposed to lipopolysaccharide than did AM from miners. The cyclooxygenase inhibitor suprofen reduced PGE1 and TXA1 production and TNF0t. release but had no effect on LTB4 production or IL-1B release by miners' AM. The lipoxygenase inhibitor nordihydroguaiaretic acid attenuated TNFa release, as well as that of LTB4, but had no effect on IL-1B release. Inhibition of thromboxane synthase by UK 38,485 also reduced TNFa release by active miners ' AM but had no effect on PGE1, LTB, production, or IL-1 f3 release. The results of these studies suggest that occupational inhalation of coal dust may increase total lung eicosanoid and cytokine levels and reduce the reactivity of AM to bacterial endotoxin. Furthermore, coal dust-induced changes in both eicosanoid and cytokine release may be subject to pharmacological modulation.The alveolar macrophage (AM) is a primary defensive cell in the lung and is one of the first cell types to encounter inhaled mineral dust. The response of the AM to invading foreign material is designed to enhance the defensive capacity of the lung. However, in the case of occupational inhalation of mineral dust particles, this response may be inappropriate, resulting not in the defense of the lung but in chronic inflammation and fibrosis (Rom et al., 1987; Takemura et al., 1989). The reaction of the AM to chronic mineral dust exposure may involve the exaggerated release of paracrine mediators of lung function, including eicosanoids (oxygenated derivatives of arachidonic acid) and peptides, including cytokines and growth factors (Sibille & Reynolds, 1990). Eicosanoids are involved in bronchial and vascular smooth muscle reactivity, vascular permeability, fibroblast growth, and the recruitment of additional immune cells to the alveolar space (Barnard et al., 1992; Elias et al., 1985; Scott et al., 1982). AM-derived cytokines such as interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 B) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TN Fa) have a variety of biological activities including the regulation of fibroblast growth and proliferation (Becker et al., 1989; Libby et al., 1989; Schmidt et al., 1984). Interestingly, in vitro studies with macrophages suggest that the production of cytokines may be linked to eicosanoid production, in particular that prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) may down-regulate IL-1 f3 and TN Foe production by the AM (Bonta et al., 1989; Kunkel et al., 1986; Monick et al., 1987)."

This paper presents one of a series of digests of foreign mining legisla- tion and court decisions that is being prepared in advance of a general report relative to the rights of American citizens to explore for minerals and to own and operate mines in various foreign countries. This interpretation of the laws of Switzerland has been prepared from the best information available in ashington, but is released subject to correction and amplification, if necessary, by the proper American diplomatic and consuler officers, to whom it is being referred through the courtesy of the Department of State. Sitzerland is a small country in which little mining is done, yet it has a voluminous body of mining legislation. There are two salt-mining districts in Switzerland; that at Bez, Canton of Vaud, belongs to the Canton but the deposit is worked by a private company; and those at Schweizerhalle, Rheinfelden and Ryburg are worked by a joint stock company formed by the Cantons interested. Iron ore is mined at Gonzen, Canton of St. Gallen, and large beds of gypsum are worked, mainly for domestic consumption. In general, however, although many kinds of minerals are said to have been found in Switzerland, mining operations are irreguler end relatively unimportant. Even during the world war only about 2,500 persons were employed in mining establishments and most of these were in under round stone quarries. On the other hand, the republic comprises 22 Cantons, of which 3 are divided, making 25 units, and in the absence of generel Federal legislation, each of these units virtually has its own distinct mining la Under these circumstances, it is obviously inadvisable to review the mining lars of Switzerland in the same detail as those of other countries which Lave been digested in this series. For the lars of individual Cantons, as well as for a more comprehensive summary of the Swiss legislation as a whole, the reader is referred to a recent German publication." Noise surveys conducted in underground coal mines have consistently indicated that auger mining machines subject the operator and helpers to excessive noise exposure. The machine cutting heads have been identified as the primary noise source. This report documents the research program conducted to (1) investigate the nature of the cutting head noise problem, (2) develop noise control concepts, (3) devise in-mine survivable techniques to implement the noise control concepts, and (4) build and demonstrate prototype reduced-noise auger miner cutting heads. The dynamic forces generated during coal cutting by the brittle fracture of coal are predominently low frequency. The low-frequency (less than 1500 Hz) structural response of the cutting head, therefore, determines the noise radiated by the cutting head. The most feasible methods of reducing the cutting head low-frequency response are to increase both the structural stiffness and the low-frequency damping. A technique was devised to achieve these goals. The standard plate helix was replaced by a sand-filled hollow helix of triangular cross section, and the core diameter was increased with an attendant reduction in helix depth. Extended in-mine tests demonstrated the operational capability of the reduced-noise auger cutting heads. The simple noise control concepts are valid for all continuous miner cutting heads. The sand-filled hollow helix technique, which achieved a 10 dB(A) noise reduction for the auger, can be used on any helix-bearing Cutting head.

This report presents the results of an investigation of a mine production-scheduling model and a critical path analysis for long-range mine planning. An example is given to illustrate how these techniques might be used to plan long-range development and production scheduling for a large underground mine. The model, based on estimated ore block grades and tonnages, and on designed mine development layout, simulates mining of ore blocks in a sequence necessary to fulfill mill requirements for ore tonnage and grade evaluation within pre-established system restrictions. Simulated production schedules are obtained as output from the model. These production schedules are then incorporated into a critical path analysis to determine the sequence for the long-range development work so as to fulfill the production schedules and thereby meet the ore grade and tonnage requirements of the mill.

This paper is the first of a series that is to appear on smelting in the lead blast furnace. The objects of this investigation are to determine the conditions obtaining within the blast furnace by direct experimentation, and to correlate the behavior of the furnace at various times with the main factors governing the operation of the blast furnace, and metallurgical losses. The Mouat copper-nickel deposit in Stillwater County, south-central Montana, was examined by Paul T. Allsman, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in 1939. Because of the strategic importance of nickel, a project was executed by John East, Jr., J. J. Naughton, and E. W. Newman, engineers of the Bureau, to further delimit some of the copper-nickel sulfide-bearing bodies that had been discovered by the Anaconda Copper Mining. Co. in 1937 and to investigate the central part of the deposit, which had not been drilled previously. This report is based largely upon the results of the. Bureau of Mines investigation and the results of exploration by the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. In addition, a brief description is given of some other copper-nickel sulfide-bearing deposits along tho Stillwater Complex.

This report describes the feasibility of mining the oil shale deposits of the Piceance Creek basin in Colorado by an integrated open pit system. The study is based upon a comprehensive analysis of pertinent environmental, economic, and engineering factors. Ten mining cases are investigated, and the mine design and cost estimates for each case are presented in this report. Nine of the cases represent three cutoff grades, defining oil shale ore as equal to and above 15 gallons per ton (gpt), 20 gpt, and 25 gpt at three ore production levels of 500,000 tons per day (TPD), 1,250,000 TPD, and 2,500,000 TPD. The tenth case is an alternate design of the 500,000 TPD production rate at the above 15 gpt cutoff grade. The report consists of Volume I, a technical and cost comparison of the ten cases; Volume II-Part I, a detailed explanation of the estimating methods used; and Volume II-Part 2, a more detailed discussion of the technical and cost features of the ten cases than is presented in Volume I.

Everyone knows that mining is a noisy job, but did you know that you are nine times more likely to lose your hearing than someone who works in a quieter job? If unprotected from noise on the job, by age 50, you will probably need hearing aids. Obviously, the best solution is to engineer out the noise, but that isn?t always im­mediately possible. Until mines are quieter, one way you can help save your vital sense of hearing is to use hearing protectors whenever the noise around you is hazardous. Even if you already have some hearing loss, you can use hearing protectors to prevent your hearing from getting worse. When loud noise is present, proper use of hearing protectors will help miners pre-vent most or all noise-induced hearing loss.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has patented and transferred to industry an abrasive-enhanced water-jet rock drill. This drill incorporates three novel components: a collimator, jet deflectors for cutting clearance, and an unpressurized swivel, which rotates at 1,000 rpm while passing 20 gpm of an abrasive slurry flowing at 1,000 ft/s. Drilling occurs through the action of a 10,000-psi, 2O-gpm water jet into which is entrained 72 lb/min of abrasives. The pumps, hoses, and fittings are those commonly used in the water-jet-cleaning industry. Only inexpensive, common sandblasting abrasives are used. This drill can cut through hard rocks with moderate-pressure jets; e.g., rocks with a compressive strength of 73,000 psi can be drilled with a 1O,OOO-psi abrasive jet. In addition to drilling holes, the drill can cut deep, narrow kerfs; collar a hole at any angle; drill through rubble; and chamber holes. The development of the abrasive jet drill is a significant advance in the state of the art of hard-rock drilling. The Government of the United States has licensed the abrasive jet drill patent to Weatherford Water Jetting Systems.

Accidents to men employed in the quarrying and related industries of the United States were more numerous, absolutely and relatively, in 1937 than in 1936. Fortunately, the entire increase was in the category of nonfatal injuries, as accidents causing death declined in number and in proportion to the number of man-hours worked. Employment increased. More men were employed, more man-days and man-hours were worked, and the average employee had more hours of work than in 1936. Reports covering all commercial operations showed that 84,094 men were employed an increase of 5.1 percent over 1936. The number of man-hours of work performed by the industry was, 158 millions, an increase of 7.6 percent. Seventy-seven men were killed by accidents, a, reduction of 14 from the year before, and 6,348 men were injured and disabled for more than the remainder of the day on which the accident occurred, 11 percent more than in 1936. The fatality rate of 0.49 per million man-hours of exposure in 1937 compared favorably with the rate of 0.62 for the previous year, whereas the non-fatal-injury rate of 40.10 was 3.2 percent higher than the rate of 38.87 for 1936.
