The generation and disposal of solid waste from electric utility plants using a lime or limestone wet-scrubbing system and the potential effects on the environment were estimated for 1975 and 1980. The study indicated that in 1975 approximately 5.8 million tons of desulfurization solid waste (50 percent solids) will be generated. In 1980, when it is estimated that desulfurization will become commercially accepted, approximately 71.4 million tons of this material will be generated for disposal and/or utilization. The desulfurization waste material when combined with lime, fly ash, and water may have potential for use as a roadbase material, landfill reclamation, and synthetic aggregate.

The effect of oxygen content in the anode metal on titanium electrorefining characteristics was studied. Increasing quantities of oxygen in the anode resulted in increased anode scale formation, decreased anode and cathode current efficiencies, lower titanium recovery efficiencies, and higher oxygen content of the cathode products. The titanium electrorefining process performed best when the anodes did not contain more than 0.5 percent oxygen, although anode dissolution was recorded for alloys containing up to 25 percent oxygen. Back emf affords a useful index of an alloy to electrorefining.

In 1955 the Federal Bureau of Mines established a low-temperature tar laboratory at its new Appalachian Experiment Station in Morgantown, W. Va. The objective of the laboratory is to investigate the yields and chemical and physical properties of tars from low-temperature carbonization of coal, to investigate means of economically upgrading these tars, and to make available to industry and the public essential data for increasing coal utilization through the establishment of a new coal-chemical industry, based on the utilization of low-temperature tars. Because of the obvious economic significance of phenols, as well as the relative ease with which they can be separated and analyzed, initial research has centered mainly around this class of tar constituents. It was realized early that no listing of phenols and their physical properties existed that included enough compounds to be practicable. The purpose of this paper is to make such a compilation available.

The Bureau of Mines investigated a roast-leach process for recovering a marketable lithium product from a montmorillonite-type clay deposit located on the Nevada-Oregon border. The clay sample treated in the investigation contained 0.6 wt pct Li. The lithium recovery process consisted of several unit operations. The lithium silicate compounds in the clay were converted to Li2SO4 by roasting a pelletized mixture of clay, limestone, and gypsum at 900° C in a direct-gas-fired rotary roaster. Water--leaching the calcine at 40 pct solids extracted the Li2SO4. Lithium recovery from the leach solution involved concentrating the solution by evaporation, adding Na2CO3 to the concentrated solution to precipitate Li2CO3 , and filtering the slurry to obtain the product. The product filtrate was recycled to the evaporator following a crystallization step. About 80 pct of the lithium in the clay was recovered as 99-pct-pure Li2CO3. Process operating costs were estimated at $2.12/lb Li2CO3 produced; the current Li2CO3 selling price is $1.48/lb. Raw materials. accounted for 30 pct of the total operating cost.

In recent years the rapid depletion of high-grade iron ores and the demand by blast furnace operators for increasingly low-silica ores have stimulated interest in flotation studies of low-grade iron ores, such as wash-ore tailings and oxidized taconites. Four processes have been reported for the flotation separation of these iron ores--anionic and cationic collection of the iron oxides, cationic collection of siliceous gangue, and anionic collection of activated siliceous gangue (5).5/ The effectiveness of any one method, however, depends largely on the mineralogical composition and on the physical structure of the sample; hence, a comprehensive study of the floatability of the individual minerals occurring in these materials is essential. A review of the literature shows that the floatability of hematite and magnetite has been frequently investigated, whereas very little corresponding information is available for goethite, or for its more earthy form, limonite, both of which are abundant in the Mesabi and Cuyuna ores (19). The purpose of this investigation was to formulate general information on the floatability of goethite. Vacuum flotation, contact angle measurement, and simplified flotation tests using a modified Hallimond tube were used. The experimental results were correlated with the electrokinetic properties of goethite as determined by streaming potential measurement. The results were used to interpret the batch flotation tests made on an artificial mixture of quartz and goethite.

Diesel particulate matter (DPM) often contains small amounts of metal as a minor component but this metal may contribute to adverse health effects. Knowledge of the mechanism for particle formation as well as the size preference of the trace metals is critical to understanding the potential for health concerns. To achieve this, the size and the composition of each particle should be optimally measured at the same time. Single particle mass spectrometer (SPMS) would be the best tool for this objective. In this paper, we therefore will introduce new findings about the mechanism and distribution of the trace metals in DPM, derived from a study where an SPMS was used to analyze freshly emitted DPM. The Bureau of Mines obtained samples of oil - reservoir rock from wells in Ohio , Pennsylvania , and West Virginia as part of an investigation of the susceptibility of petroleum reservoirs to secondary - recovery techniques . Illustrations and tables showing the geographic and stratigraphic sequence of the cored reservoirs and 40 tables of detailed lithologic descriptions of the reservoirs are presented . Information relevant to geologic surroundings , oilfield history , coring and well logging operations , and reservoir core analyses are referenced throughout the report .

Electrical conductivities and densities of the LiF- UF , LiF- ThF4 , NaF - C1F4 , and NaF - ThF systems were measured as functions of composition and temperature . The specific conductance and density varied linearly with temperature . Molar and equivalent volumes , as well as heats of activation for conductance , were calculated from the experimental data . At 1,000 ° C , the molar volumes ranged from 16 to 40 cubic centimeters per mole and the specific conductance ranged from 9.8 to 2.5 per ohm- centimeter as the actinide metal fluoride concentration changed from 0 to 60 mole - percent . Heats of activation for conductance were 3 to 7 kcal per mole . The data are interpreted on the basis of a semilattice model for the melts .

This examination of Pacific Northwest (Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington) ferrous scrap-industry operations, principally those in Oregon and Washington, points out factors influencing the supply and consumption of scrap materials, such as the complete dependence of steel ingot producers in these States on scrap as a metal raw material and the sizable quantity of scrap exported from Seattle and Portland to Japan. The pattern of the industry is presented as a movement of materials from their diverse sources to the consuming market. The geographic locations of the consuming industries in relation to the areas generating scrap materials and the movement pattern of the supply from source to destination strongly influences the cost of the commodity. The best measure of the scrap supply available in an area is experience in terms of how much scrap was withdrawn at a given price. Scrap availability is not finite, because the return of materials as scrap is secular and influenced by constantly varying market conditions. Steel ingot producers use 75 percent of the approximate 500,000 tons of scrap consumed in Oregon and Washington; steel foundries take 15 percent of the total; and iron foundries, ferroalloy plants, and other miscellaneous consumers utilize the remainder. Also, from 1955 to 1960 an average of about 200,000 tons has been exported annually from Oregon and Washington. The foreign exports are supplemented by lesser shipments to other steel producing States, principally in the western United States. From 1955 to 1960 the preferred and higher value heavy melting scrap grades accounted for about 60 percent of total withdrawals which varied between 600,000 and 950,000 tons annually. Total crap withdrawals from Oregon and Washington are projected to 1.8 million tons by 1985, 60 percent (1.1 million tons) of which will be heavy melting grades. No. 1 heavy melting scrap is most attractive to scrap consumers at $35 per ton or less. Price-supply relationships compared with projected scrap requirements indicate future prices possibly over $35 per ton. High prices over a long period could motivate the Pacific Northwest scrap consumers to produce steel from iron ore. However, technologic changes taking place at integrated steel plants could reduce scrap withdrawals from the Pacific Northwest, which might keep the scrap price sufficiently attractive to obviate production of competitive iron products by the Pacific Northwest scrap consumers.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory investigations with the objective of developing an alternative process for recovering cobalt and copper from complex sulfide concentrates. Processes currently used depend largely upon precipitation techniques to remove impurities and recover cobalt from sulfate liquors prepared by oxidative pressure leaching of the sulfide concentrates. The Bureau conducted bench-scale research on a process for treating cobaltite concentrates, comprising (1) oxidative pressure leaching, (2) jarosite precipitation followed by H202 oxidation and pH control to remove iron and arsenic, (3) copper solvent extraction with a mixed hydroxyoxime-amine extractant, (4) copper electrowinning from recirculating acidic strip liquor, (5) selective cobalt extraction from copper solvent extraction raffinate with a phosphinic acid extractant, and (6) electrowinning of cobalt from a recirculating weak acid strip liquor. Overall cobalt and copper recoveries were 91.7 and 84.1 pct, respectively. Electrowon products assayed 99.8 pct Co and 99.89 pct Cu.

This volume summarizes the contract work performed over a nine-month period by Westinghouse Electric Corporation on a Cost Plus Fixed Fee Contract for the Department of Interior's Bureau of Mines. The contract has been extended primarily to carry out improvements recommended for equipment produced under the contract for communicating with and locating trapped miners. These improvements will enhance the performance and utility of this equipment for operational use in actual mine emergencies. An additional complete set of the equipment will also he furnished to the Bureau under this extension. The work of the basic contract was to design, produce and test hardware in accordance with the Westinghouse response to a Bureau of Mines Request for Proposal which was based technically on recommendations of a study performed for the Bureau by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). In 1990, the Bureau of Mines (BOM) conducted a mineral investigation of the mines and prospects in the East Mojave National Scenic Area (EMNSA). San Bernardino County. California During field work. BOM identified 701 mines and prospects in EMNSA for which the geology, mineral resources, and mining history were compiled and summarized. Analytical results for 1.188 rock samples collected are tabulated. Total value of identified resources in EMNSA is $5.0 billion. Twenty-four mines and prospects were deemed profitable under current economic conditions. Development could generate considerable economic benefits to San Bernardino County. Potential economic benefits from mining the deposits were evaluated under the following access restrictions for EMNSA: 1) fun access, 2) HR 3460, and 3) S 11/HR 780. Under the full access scenario, cumulative mine revenues are $3.0 billion, cumulative personal earnings at mines and supporting industries are $0.94 billion, and annual jobs at mines and supporting industries are 2,379. Under HR 3460, mine revenues, personal earnings, and annual jobs are $2.9 billion. $0.88 billion, and 2,165, respectively. Under S 11/HR 780, mine revenues, personal earnings, and annual jobs are $1.0 billion, $0.32 billion, and 936, respectively.

"In November 1942, a preliminary report on the Swartz Mining District by John H. Soule, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, recommended an exploratory program of diamond drilling. The existence of zinc and lead deposits in this region had been known for many years. In 1943 and 1944, the Federal Geological Survey made a detailed study of the same area. Later work done by the Bureau of Mines in this district followed the suggestions made by these geologists.3/In the latter part of 1944, Felix A. Vogel, Jr., another Bureau engineer, made a study of the Grey Eagle mine in the Kingston Mining District, a few miles northeast of the Swartz district, and his recommendations for diamond drilling were followed in so far as funds permitted. Drilling was started in October 1943 and was completed in June 1945.4/In its program of exploration of Mineral deposits, the .Bureau of Mines 'Ms as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution t national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples of ore and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director.With respect to this report, special acknowledgment for assistance is due to C. H. Johnson, chief of the Rolla Division, Mining Branch, and to various members of the Geological Survey."

The Bureau of Mines Minerals Availability System collected and analyzed data for 34 nonlaterite and 9 nickeliferous laterite domestic chromite deposits in order to assess their viability as sources of chromium under present technologic and economic conditions. These 43 deposits, none currently in production, contain approximately 6.3 and 22.3 million metric tons of Cr203 at the demonstrated and identified resource levels, respectively. Approximately 4.6 and 15.6 million metric tons of Cr203 are recoverable at the demonstrated and identified levels, respectively, for the 34 nonlaterite deposits. None of these resources are economically recoverable at January 1981 market prices. Production of metallurgical-grade chromite (market price $128 to $144) would require a minimum chromite market price of $237 per metric ton. Chemical-grade chromite production (market price $74 to $85) would require a chromite market price in excess of $188 per metric ton. From the 34 nonlaterite deposits, roughly 5.4 and 17.6 million metric tons of ferrochrome could be produced at the demonstrated and identified resource levels, respectively; however, a minimum market price of $770 per metric ton of ferrochrome would be required to stimulate production. The nine nickeliferous laterite deposits were not evaluated through production stages because of uncertainties in process technology and cost.

The production of bituminous coal by stripping methods has become an important factor in some areas, especially in the Central and South Central States. In the latter, production at strip mines exceeds that at deep mines. No noticeable international economic recovery occurred during the first half of 1982. Industrial production continued to fall in the United States, Canada and Italy and to hold steady in France. Modest increases in production occurred in Japan, England and Germany, although some decline took place from March to April. The U.S. mining industry has been more severely affected by the world recession than the U.S. economy. This is not immediately obvious when comparing the U.S. mining industrial production index from 1981 to 1982, which decreased 8.5 percent, as compared to a 7.1 percent decline for total domestic industries. However, "mining" industry statistics in the U.S. national economic accounting system include petroleum and natural gas as well as minerals. When metal mining is isolated, the decrease in production from 1981 to 1982 is 19.3 percent. If metal mining production continues to perform at the same rate during the third and fourth quarters of 1982 as during the first half of the year, declines from 1981 levels will be quite severe. Aluminum will have declined 22 percent, copper 18 percent, iron ore 24 percent, lead 3 percent, steel 29 percent, titanium 2 percent and zinc 25 percent.

Coal-mine explosions in the United States during the past 10 years ranked third among the causes of coal-mine fatalities and constituted 16.1 percent of the total fatalities. In Indiana, however, during this same period the percentage of fatalities from this cause was much higher than the average percentage for the entire country. It is only through knowledge of the factors that have led to these past explosions that intelligent steps may be taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future. Although information concerning many of the earlier explosions is lacking, an attempt has been made to tabulate the information available in the hope that it may be of assistance in calling attention to some of the principal causes of explosions in Indiana.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of platinum from known major deposits in market economy countries. Fifteen of these deposits contain demonstrated resources totaling 302 million troy ounces of platinum. Detailed geologic, engineering, and cost evaluations were performed on each deposit to determine its potential for platinum production. There are large amounts of demonstrated platinum potentially available from market economy deposits that were not analyzed owing to lack of adequate data or to technological limitations. These include 297 million troy ounces contained in the UG2 and Platreef of the Bushveld Complex, South Africa. This analysis indicates that about 11 0 million troy ounces (2.3 million ounces annually) of platinum are potentially available at the January 1980 producer price of $420 per troy ounce, nearly all from South Africa. An additional 85 million troy ounces occurring in Zimbabwean deposits would become available only through more than a quadrupling of that price. In order to meet projected world demand of 3.5 million troy ounces in 1990, platinum price may have to increase. Only one domestic deposit, the Salmon River in Alaska, is capable of producing platinum at $420 per troy ounce. Regardless of price, at assumed production capacities, domestic deposits could supply less than 10 percent of annual U.S. requirements.
