"INTRODUCTION The Queen Mary copper property is in sec. 18, T. 12 N., R. 16 W., in the Clinton mining district of Missoula County, Mont. It was examined by an engineer 3/ of the Bureau of Mines, November 21, 1943. Upon the basis of his recommendations, a small trenching and diamond-drilling program was begun November 11, 1944. One diamond-drill hole was completed December 16, -944, but because of frozen ground trenching was postponed until June 1945 and then completed. This report describes the results of exploration.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Field Demonstration of the Remote Mine Sealing System in a Coal Mine 8. 1 Selection of Field Test Site Eastern Associated Coal Corporation (EACC) offered its Federal No. 1 coal mine in Grant Town, West Virginia as the site for field testing of the remote sealing system. The choice of Federal No. 1 mine was particularly appropriate as the first attempt at fire control by remote sealing was done in this mine in 1963. EACC provided the men and equipment required for much of the initial preparation. Considerable assistance, advice, and background on coal mining technology was given by Mr. William Laird, Vice President for Research and Development, EACC, and by Mr. Lawrence Jackson, Resident Engineer at the Federal No. 1 mine. District 3 USBM office, the West Virginia Bureau of Mines, the Technical Support Group of the USBM, and Local 4047 of the United Mine Workers of America also cooperated. 8.2 Preparation of Field Test Site 8.2. 1 Underground Site Preparation The underground site chosen for the field testing was in a non-working portion of the mine within a few hundred feet of the main haulage road, as shown in Figure 80. Known as "Seven Switch, " this area was a 20 minute walk or 5 minute "jeep" trip from the man-trip shaft. Ten years having passed since this area was actively worked, considerable effort was required for gob clearing, roof bolting, rock dusting, and rejuvenating the track from the haulage road to the test area. This report describes work which was done to apply an existing finite element computer program UNSAT2 to the unsteady, unsaturated flow of water through waste shale piles. The work was done in three phases: 1. Verification of program through comparison with existing data. 2. Verification of program through simulation of flow from field seepage ponds at Rifle, Colorado. Considerable laboratory work was done in this phase to obtain capillary pressure-saturation-relative permeability data and hydraulic conductivity values for retorted shale. 3. Application of program to flow due to natural rainfall in a section through the Piceance Basin in Colorado, and a typical waste shale pile.

A literature search and survey were prepared on the technology of surface hydraulic mining, with particular reference to its possible use in the United States forstripping overburden from surface coal mines. Extensive use was made of Russian references which were translated into English. The advantages and disadvantages of hydraulic mining and hydrotransport are identified as well as criteria for selecting potential applications. At present, the major U.S. application is in the phosphate industry of Florida and North Carolina. Potential locations for hydraulic stripping of overburden from coal seams are identified in the states of Alaska, Illinois, Montana, Washington and Wyoming. Other potential applications include the hydraulic mining of peat in Minnesota, and the stripping of overburden from lignite in Texas, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota. Further research is recommended, particularly on the subject of dewatering of fine clay slimes to avoid water pollution and to permit rapid reclamation of mined areas.

The Bureau of Mines tested chromium-bearing waste slags from industrial stainless steel and other chrome alloy operations to determine their chromium leachability characteristics under acid precipitation conditions and to devise measures to prevent any pollution originating from this source. Two critical slag composition factors were found to control the chromium leachability: (1) CaO:Si02 ratio and (2) magnesium content. Above a 2.0 CaO:Si02 ratio, chromium exists in slag as CaO·Cr203, which can be vulnerable to leaching by acid precipitation especially if oxi-dized to CaCr04 when exposed to the environment over an extended period. Maximum chromium leachability from industrial slags occurred when the composition of the slag had about a 2.0 CaO:Si02 ratio. Between a 1.0 and 2.0 CaO:Si02 ratio, in the presence of sufficient magnesium, MgO ·Cr203 was formed, which is very resistant to oxidation and to dissolution by simulated acid precipitation. Addition of magnesium silicates to molten slag to fix the chromium in the MgO·Cr203 form was successful in preventing chromium leaching in simulated acid rain solutions. Experiments showed olivine and waste taconite tailings were suitable for this purpose. Olivine addition to a waste slag having a composition vulnerable to leaching (CaO:Si02 > 2) reduced the chromium leachability more than 80 pct.

This report by the Federal Bureau of Mines describes the carbonizing properties of coals from the principal beds in Boone County , W. Va . Results are given for samples of coals from No. 5 Block , Stockton - Lewiston , Coalburg , Winifrede , Chilton , Hernshaw , Cedar Grove , Alma , and No. 2 Gas beds . Boone County coals rank as high -volatile A bituminous . Eighteen of the 21 samples tested contained from 3.3 to 7.9 percent ash and 16 of the samples contained from 0.6 to 0.9 percent sulfur . Significant improvements in surface conditions or mechanical properties of steels have been attributed by several investigators to ladle additions of small quantities of rare-earth metals or their oxides. To investigate systematically these effects in wrought and in cast plain carbon and alloy mechanical steels containing approximately 0.35 percent carbon, heats of four representative compositions were melted by the Bureau of Mines in a 4-ton open-hearth furnace. Each heat was cast into three sets of ingots to exemplify respectively, treatments with (1) rare-earth metals, (2) rare-earth metal oxides, and (3) an untreated set as a control. The development of melting, casting and rolling practices is described and discussed. Lance injection of oxygen shortly after melt raised the temperature of the metal immediately as much as 500° F., principally because mechanical agitation exposed the high-carbon metal to the flame and furnace root. An exceptional degree of superheat in the metal at the termination of the refining period was attributed to oxygen injection during the refining period. Bath temperatures higher than industrial practice were permitted by the all-basic furnace lining. Rates of carbon elimination as high as 0.036 percent carbon per minute were achieved by oxygen injections.

The purpose of this investigation was to obtain complete information on some of the uses of a 24-inch-diameter auger in the underground mining of pitching anthracite beds. The auger was placed in operation early in 1958 to drive ventilation connections between coal gangways driven by a continuous miner. Although designed to drill rise holes only, it was used also to drill dip holes. The latter holes were drill id from an adjacent gangway to avoid interference between the auger and the continuous miner. These holes established immediate ventilation returns when intersected by the continuous miner. Bureau participation in the project covered 361 working days. The auger was used on 288 shifts, usually one 7-hour shift per day, and drilled 3,246 feet, of which 493 feet were reamed. The longest hole was 87 feet; hence the maximum drilling depth of the machine (rated at 100 feet) was not required. Holes drilled normal to the strike of the bed ranged from 30 to 66 feet deep, averaging 45 feet. The continuous miner drove gangways on 575 shifts. Thus, the auger worked one shift for each two worked by the continuous miner and was used on less than 80 percent of the workdays. The auger drove 24-inch holes 10 times faster than the larger, conventional openings could have been driven by usual mining methods and exceeded the workload for which it was purchased. Augering eliminates exposure to the hazards encountered in driving chute-work by conventional methods and provides adequate circular ventilation openings, which are strong in self support and are adaptable to reaming when required. With alterations, the auger may have limited use as a production machine in thin-bed pitch mining but cannot compete with established methods of thick-bed pitch mining.

"INTRODUCTION The BeVan quartz crystal prospect in the Indian Creek mining district of Lemhi County, west-central Idaho, was examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines 3/ on July 9, 1943. As quartz crystals possessing peizoelectric properties were on the critical list of strategic war minerals, further exploration of the deposit was recommended. The Bureau of Mines exploration began in December 1943 and continued through January 1944. Additional trenching was completed during May and June 1944. Preliminary safe distances for blasting wiring from typical electromagnetic sources are presented. The distances are for underground coal mines and electromagnetic sources in the frequency range below 10 MHz. The distances are based on measurements performed at 3 locations in each of 3 coal mines. The measurement apparatus, measurement procedure, measurement results and the rationale used in the calculation of the safe distances are all described. The safe distances presented are dependent on the measurement results and their interpretation. More measurements are clearly necessary to establish the validity of the suggested distances.

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYNowata County, in the northeast corner of Oklahoma, is one of the principal oil-producing counties of this stripper area. Many fields in the county were opened and much oil was produced before statehood. The location of the major fields, as defined by the Oklahoma Corporation Commission, 2/ the outline of the areas of water-flooding activity, and the location of the several projects described in detail in this report are shown in figure 1.There was some drilling in the county earlier; but it was not until after 1904, when the Secretary of the Interior confirmed as valid the leases granted by the Cherokee Nation, that the major drilling activity began. Initial development in this part of Oklahoma was in the Chelsea field in Rogers County, which adjoins Novata County on the south. The activity spread rapidly northward to the Alluwe and Coody's Bluff fields, and then to the Nowata-Claggett field. Continued exploration resulted in discovery of the Delaware-Childers field, where some wells having an initial production of 1,000 barrels daily were completed. Fields discovered and developed during the next few years included the Lenepah (Elliott), Adair, California Creek, Curl Creek, Woody, and South Coffeyville. The oil-production history of Nowata County is shown in figure 2. In assembling the data for a production curve, it was found that the combined production records for Nowata and Rogers Counties were available for 1914 to 1951, inclusive, and that records for the individual counties were available only from 1926 to 1951, inclusive. The early production figures for the counties from 1905 to 1914, inclusive, except for 1909, were calculated from the initial production statistics of the Federal Geological Survey mineral resources bulletins and production data assembled by C. H. Beal. 3/ The production values for 1905 to 1926 for Nowata County were obtained by dividing the total production for the two counties by a percentage factor derived from known facts regarding the oil industry in the area. Production figures for the individual counties from 1926 to 1933, inclusive, were obtained from the files of the Oil and Gas Journal, and the figures from 1933 through 1951 were obtained from monthly reports of the Oklahoma Corporation Commission."

Natural gas was the only economically significant mineral produced. A significant amount of the gas output was consumed in the production of nitrogen fertilizer and electric power. Proved reserves of natural gas were abundant and at least sufficient to supply most of the country's industrial and domestic needs for many decades to come. Other mineral production was of little importance to the Bangladesh economy, although there were prospects for developing some of the nonmetallic minerals. The flat river-delta terrain comprising nearly all of Bangladesh made the potential for discovering major, economically exploitable mineral deposits poor. The deep sediments, however, have good potential for crude oil or additional natural gas discoveries.

"The Stiner zinc prospect near the north boundary of Union Tennessee, and the Bunch Hollow property 5 miles northeast in Claiborne County, Tennessee, were diamond-drilled by the Bureau of Mines during the period .September 1, 1944, to February 22, 1945. Seventeen holes totaling 5,687 feet were completed, 13 of which, totaling, 5.083 feet, were on the Stiner property and the remainder, totaling 604 feet, at Bunch Hollow.The Stiner prospect is about 1 mile east of the old workings known as ""New Prospect"" or ""Lead Mine Bend."" The Federal Geological Survey made a study' of the area early in 1944. The prospect was first visited in August 1944 by Bureau of' Mines engineers3/ accompanied by members of the Federal Geological Survey.4/ The locality is reached by traveling State Road 33 north-about 9 miles from Maynardsville, Tenn., thence northwest about 7 miles by an improved county road that leads to the mine (fig. 1). The tract comprises an area of about 181 acres held by G. S. Stiner of Sharps Chapel, Tenn.; it is now under option to the Universal-Exploration Co. of Jefferson City, Tenn.The Bunch Hollow property, about 5 miles northeast of the Stiller prospect, was also studied by the Federal Geological Survey previous to being;Visited by Bureau of Mines engineers in August 1944. It is reached by traveling north from Maynardsville, Tenn., on State Road 33 about 13 miles, thence northwest by county road 6 miles to the property (fig. 1). The last 3 miles of the county road are in poor repair but are passable during the entire year. The property comprises an area of approximately 300 acres and is held by the imperial Mining Co., Pressman's Home, Tenn.Few reliable data are available as to the history of the Stiner prospects themselves. However, the New Prospect mine, 1 mile west, has had a colorful past, This mine was opened in 1883 and was worked intermittently until 1918, by which time more than 65,000 tons of concentrates had been shipped. No further work was done until 1942, when the mine pillars were robbed and 1,900 tons of ore averaging 25 percent zinc was shipped to the New Jersey Zinc Co., Austinville, Va."

Corrosion research is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines to determine suitable construction materials for geothermal resource recovery plants. As part of this research, the corrosion resistance of 31 iron-nickel-, aluminum-, copper-, titanium-, and molybdenum-base alloys was characterized and evaluated in laboratory corrosion studies in low-and high-salinity geobrines representative of those found in the Imperial Valley, Calif. General, crevice, pitting, weld, and stress corrosion were measured at 105° and 232° C in deaerated brines and brines containing dissolved 02, C02, and CH4 General corrosion rates in deaerated brines at 105° and 232° C were usually below 5 mpy for the alloys tested except carbon steel, the low-alloy steels, Monel 400, 70-30 cupronickel, and the aluminum-base alloys. Dissolving carbon dioxide and methane in the brines at 2320 did not markedly alter these results. However, the introduction of oxygen, which can enter the brine during process operations, seriously degraded the corrosion resistance of many alloys by increasing the incidence of stress corrosion cracking, crevice corrosion and, except for the titanium-base alloys, pitting. In deaerated brine at 2320 C, the general corrosion rates for carbon steel and the low-alloy steels were relatively unaffected by pH in the range of 6.1 to 3.0. However, general corrosion rates increased sharply below pH 3.0. In deaerated brine at 232° C, welds in several iron-, nickel-, and titanium-base alloys corroded at rates comparable to the general corrosion rates of the alloys, but the addition of oxygen to the brine increased corrosion rates for welds in Inconel 625 and E-Brite 26-1. Alloys exhibiting good corrosion resistance in the deaerated Salton Sea KGRA-type brine at 232° C were E-Brite 26-1, Inconel 625, Hastelloy S, Hastelloy G, Hastelloy C-276, TiCode-12, Ti-0.2Pd, Ti-2Ni, Ti-1.7W, and TZM. The alloys most resistant to corrosion in oxygenated Salton Sea KGRA-type brine at 232° C were the titanium-base alloys. These alloys appear the most suitable for use in the construction of geothermal resource recovery plants. Carbon steel and the low-alloy steels are unsatisfactory for high-temperature, high-salinity brines and alternative low-cost materials with improved corrosion resistance should be sought.

The Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho is remarkable for its number of large ore bodies and for the amount of its historical production of lead, zinc and silver (Fig. 1). Since veins were first discovered in 1884, more than 127 Mt (140 million st) of ore have been produced from narrow, high-grade veins. Mining continues at the Lucky Friday, Galena and Sunshine mines (Fig. 2). All have been in production for decades. At these mines, more efficient mining and exploration techniques have reduced costs while adding significant new reserves. Even the old Bunker Hill Mine, where ore was first found in 1875, continues operation on a limited basis, partly involving production of world-class pyromorphite specimens. Until recently, the Coeur Mine was also a profitable silver producer. Other large producers have included the Star-Morning, Hecla, Page, Standard-Mammoth, Hercules and Gold Hunter mines (Fig. 2). The first deposits were discovered by prospectors who spilled over from the Murray gold mining district, 24 km (15 miles) to the north. The Bunker Hill Mine was founded the year after the first veins were discovered. Bunker Hill has now operated for more than 100 years. Production includes 2.3 Mt (2.6 million st) of lead, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of zinc and 4.1 kt (132 million oz) of silver. Total district production through 1996 (Springer, 1997) amounted to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) of lead, 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of zinc, and 34.5 kt (1.109 billion oz) of silver. This record establishes the district as the largest recorded producer of silver in the world, while also yielding major quantities of lead and zinc. Only Potosi, Bolivia, may have produced more silver, although records are unclear. Despite the district's longevity, historic production and current activity, the published literature on the district lags behind with regard to recent concepts of district geology. The most recent comprehensive US Geological Survey (USGS) bulletins (Hobbs et al., 1965; Fryklund, 1964) are dated. Much research in the last half century has been short-lived or geographically restricted because the district is large and its geology is complex - and even this research tends to remain unpublished. The Bureau of Mines 8-liter flammability system was used to study the effectiveness of a variety of powdered inhibitors in preventing the propagation of explosions of coal dust or methane in air. Over 35 different chemical additives were evaluated against Pittsburgh seam pulverized coal. The least effective inhibitors were the carbonates, which required mass additions in the range of two to three parts inhibitor to one part of coal dust in order to prevent propagation. The most effective inhibitors were the derivatives of ammonium phosphate, which were effective quenching agents at additions of only one part inhibitor to four parts of coal dust. Alkali halide powders were of intermediate effectiveness. These laboratory-scale results are in good agreement with full-scale mine experiments in all cases where detailed comparisons have been made. Data were also obtained for the effectiveness of several of the same powdered inhibitors against methane-air explosions. Their relative order of effectiveness and the concentration ranges required for quenching the gas explosion are comparable to those measured for coal dust explosions. Data are also presented for the effectiveness of N2 and CF3Br addition. Some preliminary data are also presented for powder addition to methane burner flames. Those data are compared with other burner data and evaluated in terms of their relevance to explosion tests.

Bull Lake is one of several saline lakes situated a few miles north of Rawlins, Carbon County, Wyo. (figs. and 2).. The Bureau of Mines conducted preliminary investigations of sodium sulfate deposits in many of the lakes and performed detailed work on Bull Lake. This investigation consisted of drilling 11 vertical holes through salt beds using diamond core bits and Iwan-type auger bits. Bull Lake lies in a shallow, closed depression in loosely consolidated sand. The salt beds, ranging in thickness from 2.5 to 26 feet, occur above a thick bed of shale of upper Cretaceous age. The salts appear to have been deposited in the lake from surface and subsurface drainage. The source of salt is undoubtedly the enclosing sedimentary rock's exposed to the west of the basin. Sodium sulfate in the deposits probably is present as mirabilite or Glauber salt (Na2SO4-10H2O). Chief impurities in the deposits arc mud and sand. Other soluble salts present average approximately 1 percent combined. Cores from the 11 holes were analyzed in the Bureau of Mines laboratories at Salt Lake City. Drilling totaled 512 feet. Results of analyses are given in the appendix.

In connection with a program of coal research at the Southern Experiment Station the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the University of Alabama and the various coal operators, conducts washability studies of coal from beds in Alabama and other Southern States in which commercially important deposits occur. One of the main objectives of a washability study is to obtain technically and commercially important data necessary for determining the best methods for preparing and utilizing the Nation's limited reserves of coking coal. Such information is important to conservation because it facilitates selection of preparation methods that will provide maximum yields of coal with low ash and sulfur contents.

This report presents a new procedure for analyzing the orientations of rock fractures in an engineering site. This procedure, coded in a computer program, identifies clusters or groupings among the fracture orientations and calculates (1) the mean orientation of the fractures within each cluster and (2) the dispersion or scatter among these fracture orientations. Data points are represented by intersections of joint normals with the upper hemisphere, which is divided into 100 equal-area quadrilateral patches. The points in adjacent patches where the Poisson distribution test shows significant concentrations are assigned to a single cluster. For a cluster whose fracture orientations follow Arnold's hemispherical normal distribution, a confidence interval for the fracture orientation mean is calculated by applying Fisher's estimates. The technique is applied to the treatment of three examples.
