"Construction for the restoration and expansion of 102-year-old Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois began at the conclusion of the 2014 baseball season. This six year project involves structural upgrades to the Stadium, improvements to the facade, infrastructure, restrooms, concourses, suites, press box, and bullpens, as well as the addition of restaurants, patio areas, batting tunnels, video boards, an adjacent Office-retail Tower and a new Hotel. The Bleachers were demolished and replaced, and a new underground Clubhouse was constructed for the Chicago Cubs beneath a new open-air Plaza. The 1060 Project is privately funded, projected at $750 million (US). The work will be completed in phases during consecutive off-seasons, each with a maximum 23-week duration extending through the Chicago winter. Ownership mandated that on-going construction cause no disruption to the Major League Baseball season, have no impact on hosting concerts and other special events, and it should not adversely affect seating capacity, or diminish the fan experience.The 1060 ProjectAfter purchasing the Chicago Cubs baseball team in 2009 from the Tribune Company, the Ricketts family began planning the renovation and improvement of Wrigley Field and its near neighborhood surroundings in Chicago, Illinois. What came to be known as the 1060 Project was officially announced at the annual Cubs Convention in 2013. Construction began on the $750M privately funded project in October 2014 at the conclusion of the Major League Baseball season. In their vision, the Ricketts committed the 1060 Project to three primary goals. First and foremost as a MLB franchise, the work should provide a meaningful contribution toward winning the World Series and ending the championship drought which stretched to the last win in 1908. Second, the project should be focused on preserving and improving Wrigley Field. Finally, the project should be committed to outcomes that enable the team to be a good neighbor and provide economic and social benefit to the local community.Constructed as Weeghman Park in 1914 for an estimated total cost of $250,000, the stadium provided seating for 18,000 fans and a home for the Chi-Feds and Whales of the National Federal League. The Chicago Cubs were enticed to move from the West Side Grounds in 1915. In the next 100 years, the Wrigley Field would be sliced apart and expanded, double its seating capacity with the addition of double deck grandstands, be enclosed by bleachers (and an ivy covered wall), and, in 1988, experience its first nighttime baseball game with the addition of lighting.The 1060 Project has a total budget of $750M, with an expected construction value of $350M. It is projected to add over 2,100 jobs to the economy and be completed before the 2020 baseball season. "Construction of the powerhouse for the Willow Island Hydroelectric Project, located at the Willow Island Lock and Dam, required a 120-ft deep temporary excavation inside the limits of a cellular cofferdam on the Ohio River side of the excavation and a soil-bentonite seepage cut-off wall on the landward side of the excavation. Stability analyses were performed for critical sections to evaluate the stability of the soil slopes and rock cuts using limit equilibrium, tension crack, and buckling analysis techniques. The stability analyses indicated adequate factors of safety through the landside embankment sections, and for the weighting berm soil slopes in front of the riverside cellular cofferdam. However, the results of deep-seated stability analyses through the rock supporting the riverside cellular cofferdam indicated marginal factors of safety for the 100-year flood condition. Consequently, the riverside portion of the excavation required enhanced stability measures, namely the installation of long, high-capacity rock anchors. Also, the dewatering system was modified to lower the site piezometric head to near the top of rock to improve the stability of the rock cuts.Thirty high-capacity rock anchors were installed on the upstream, riverside, and downstream sides of the cofferdam rock cut. The rock anchors consisted of multiple, seven-wire strands designed to provide the full-required design load at 60% of the strand capacity. Rock anchor loads varied from 1,968 to 2,074 kips. The maximum number of strands per anchor was 59. Bond lengths assumed an allowable bond stress of 100 psi based on the rock bond from pull-out tests.Project DescriptionAmerican Municipal Power, a nonprofit organization that owns and operates electric generation facilities for its member communities, has been in the process of constructing hydroelectric power plants adjacent to existing navigation locks and dams along the Ohio River. The Willow Island Hydroelectric Plant was recently completed on the West Virginia bank of the river adjacent to the US Army Corp of Engineers (USACE) Willow Island Lock and Dam. The plant is on the opposite river bank to the locks, and includes two turbine generating units with FERC rated capacity of 44MW at a 20-foot head differential. The Ruhlin Company of Sharon Center, Ohio was awarded contracts to construct both the cofferdam and the powerhouse. Construction began in mid-2011, and was completed in early 2016."

The project was to develop an area within the existing West County Wastewater Treatment Plant which would enable the construction of a new Raw Wastewater Pump Station (RWPS) with a footprint of approximately 85 feet by 190 feet and a foundation depth of about 82 feet below grade and a new Short- Term Detention Basin (STDB) with a footprint of about 80 feet by 130 feet and a foundation depth that varied from approximately 3 to 24 feet below grade.. The excavation support system had to be designed to withstand both normal and the 100-year flood elevations. A Reinforced Soil-Cement Wall (RSW)was chosen to provide a hydraulic barrier which consisted of a single row of soil-cement elements installed along the perimeter of the area to be excavated. Steel wide flange beams were installed on 4 foot centers to support construction loads and be resistant to the lateral forces of the soil and hydrostatic pressures. The RSW was installed to a maximum depth of 104.5ft using a triple-auger drill rig with mixing paddles with a 2ft key into weathered shale providing a cutoff wall consisting of 53,150 square foot of treated soil. The project was to provide the initial design of the excavation support for the pumping station excavation support system and groundwater cutoff. There was 534 linear foot of soil-cement-bentonite wall installed and 106 - 80 foot long W21 x 121 wide flange beams installed on four foot centers into the alignment of the wall. Each element was drilled down into the weathered shale to obtain groundwater cutoff. Derek R. Guthrie Water Quality Treatment Center Pumping Package is the site for a new pumping station that will service Louisville, Kentucky residents. After unplanned long term exposure into the winter, the effects of freeze thaw cycles were evident.

Any type of deep excavation whether for Bored Piling, Diaphragm Walls or Contiguous Bored Piling Walls depends on forming a stable borehole with a defined cross-section to receive safely the permanent materials. In modern construction the excavation depth can reach well the range of 100 m and above. The diameters of the Piles reach often sizes of 2.5 m and bigger. Top casings in Bored Piles (Diaphragm Wall none) are rather short and stability below the casing, need to be secured by stabilization slurry. The boreholes need to be formed through a variety of different materials and stand open for an extended period. Without a safe stable borehole, it is impossible to produce quality products and work cost-efficient. The understanding and proper usage of a suitable slurry is a key element essential for the delivery of Foundation Elements with high quality and within a reasonable budget. The setting of mechanical and rheological parameters in specifications is necessary and helpful, but probably insufficient to embrace and control such a key element in the practical implementation of foundation construction. The proper selection, design, implementation and supervision of slurries on site requires both from Contractors and Engineers to understand how different slurries do function. Only with this knowledge the right decisions in slurry operations can be made. This talk is directed to give some help to both, Contractor’s and Engineer’s, in understanding how different type of slurries do work. (Which ones should be preferred in what kind of soils.) The better knowledge will help the Contractor to control cost and enhance production. The Engineer will be able to assist in arriving at the appropriate technical choices and include in the specifications.

The paper presents the development of Federation of Piling Specialists (FPS) calculation of rig track loading, the production of the Building Research Establishment document “Working platforms for tracked plant” (BR 470), working platform testing and considerations of rig stability. The paper also discusses the importance of rigorous and well documented procedures and proposed future development of rapid working platform testing methods. Topics presented include the fundamental requirements and principles involved in the testing, design and maintenance of working platforms, rig track loading, the BRE design method and site testing analysis. The paper stresses the need for testing and design processes to be robust and simple and quick to perform as there is often little time between the award of a contract and the need to start work on site. Also, it is vital that all aspects of working platform design can be carried out with information that is available to the platform designer. Developments in the UK over the last two decades have resulted in improved quality and safety of working platforms that will hopefully be further enhanced as design and testing methods continue to improve.

"Cutter Soil Mixing, also known as CSM, was developed in Europe as an alternate method of Deep Mixing to the more traditional single and multiple auger techniques, and brought to market by Bauer Maschinen GmbH (Bauer), towards the end of 2003. Initial development of the technique had been completed in a joint venture between Bauer and Bachy Soletanche. In 2004 the concept was introduced to the North American market. Continued development of the method and demonstration of its versatility, both in terms of applications and applicable soil types has seen a steady growth in the number of designs incorporating the approach, and contractors offering the technique. This paper provides a brief overview of the variety and size of projects and applications where the method has been adopted, discusses some lessons learned with respect to equipment operation as well as the improvements that have been introduced to the equipment, and briefly reviews the current state of practice, as well as some of the associated on-going research and development.BACKGROUNDCutter Soil Mixing (CSM) is a technique for deep soil mixing that was initially developed as a collaborative effort between Bauer Maschinen (Bauer) and Bachy Soletanche, but which ultimately resulted in the separate development of two somewhat different brands of CSM tool. The Bauer brand of CSM entered the European market in 2004, and was first promoted in the North American market in late 2004, with the first project starting in 2005. The Bachy Soletanche brand, sometimes referred to as “Geomix” was first marketed in Europe in 2005 and the first model introduced in North America in 2007.The development of the Cutter Soil Mixing technique utilized the experiences gained from Trench Cutter/Hydrofraise equipment, developing a technique that incorporates two cutting wheels rotating about a horizontal axis as opposed to the more conventional deep soil mixing approach which utilizes augers and mixing paddles rotating about vertical axes. Whereas the Trench Cutter/Hydrofraise technique excavates the soil from within a panel, and supports the open hole using a bentonite slurry, the CSM technique cuts and displaces the soil whilst pumping a slurry/grout directly into the soil through a port located between the wheels. The combination of cutting the soil while introducing an appropriate volume of slurry effectively fluidizes the column of soil around and above the cutter head. While this process achieves a high degree of mixing, even on the downward cutting stroke, thorough in-situ mixing typically occurs on the withdrawal stroke, when most of the slurry is added."

"A refinery expansion project for Marathon Petroleum Company in Southern Louisiana required existing medium to large pipe racks to be expanded for additional capacity. Foundation modifications were necessary in order to add levels to the existing pipe racks. New piles were added and existing pile cap foundations were expanded. Several different pile types were considered. Custom designed large diameter helical piles were chosen, because they can be installed quickly with low overhead restrictions, produce minimal soil spoils, and are cost effective. The load capacity required for piles was higher than typical, off-the-shelf helical piles. In particular, the lateral load capacity demand was high due to wind loads of a hurricane prone region. Methods used to design and size helical piles are summarized including capacity to torque ratio estimation for composite helical piles. Pile load testing was performed in order to confirm design capacities of the helical piles under axial and lateral loading. Measured axial and lateral deflections compared well with predicted values. This case history evaluates the effectiveness of modern helical pile design methods within the context of a real and practical example.INTRODUCTIONAs the capacity of modern installation equipment increases, large-diameter helical piles are being used to support higher loads in more diverse applications. Currently, large-diameter high-capacity helical piles are used for electrical power transmission, power generation, high-rise buildings, bridges, and industrial applications. This case study regards a 2.5-mile pipe rack modification project within an existing refinery. One of the many challenges for engineering and construction of refinery revamp projects is determining how to effectively expand the capacity of existing foundations for additional equipment, piping, and other facilities. Custom designed large-diameter helical piles provided an effective solution to the challenges faced when expanding the capacity of existing pipe racks."

Traveling from Maine to Florida, I-9S is the U.S.' longest North-South interstate and has been growing and expanding through the Mid-Atlantic. In Maryland, the 1-9S Express Toll Lanes projects created new toll lanes to relieve congestion and increase quality of life for numerous communities along the interstate, according to project owner, the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA). Many of these projects also included replacing or rehabilitating bridges and constructing new noise walls, as well as retaining walls, as I-9 S expands to accommodate the new lanes. The focus of this article is the 1-9S Express Toll Lane Northbound Extension from MD 43 to south of MD 1S2. This project contains 11 large retaining walls with some of these walls combined with noise walls. Many of these projects join other adjacent 1-9S toll lane expansions, which makes timing critical and scheduling very important. In this particular project, all of the major retaining walls were on one side of 1-9S and built in one phase that created scheduling and logistical challenges.

Rigid inclusions are a ground improvement technique that provides soil reinforcement and settlement mitigation using drilled displacement elements. Rigid inclusion installation typically uses a Monitoring While Drilling (MWD) electronic logging system that captures data such as torque, downward thrust, rotary speed and grout take with depth and time. Installation of each rigid inclusion can be considered data from a large-scale in-situ test consisting of penetration of a rotating probe into the ground. Automatically generated graphic logs are typically reviewed visually by members of a project team for quality control during and after installation. This workflow underutilizes the valuable data provided by these MWD systems. This paper discusses the use of MWD installation data integrated with cone penetration test (CPT) data and static load test results to develop a streamlined and robust quality control workflow for rigid inclusions. A compound parameter designated the Penetration Resistance Index (PRI) is computed using soil-tool interface mechanics principles for each production element. The PRI, when plotted with depth, can be correlated with CPT data so that changes in soil profile can be detected as production elements are installed across the site. When the PRI is integrated over element length below the neutral plane, the resulting Integrated Resistance Index (IRI) value can be compared with the IRI of load test elements to rapidly assess element suitability. Use of the PRI and the IRI can help improve quality and efficiency of Rigid Inclusions systems by detecting potential areas where geotechnical conditions are sufficiently different or have improved significantly as production installation progresses. This information allows designers to determine whether optimization of the intended element lengths is possible or where a more intense treatment may be necessary. This quality control workflow can be performed in near-real time.

The magnitude of settlements depends on several factors, such as soil type and stratification, ground water conditions (degree of saturation), pile type and method of pile installation (driving energy). A method of settlement prediction due to construction-induced vibrations has been presented by Massarsch (2000). However, in many cases, an engineering assessment must be made at an early stage of a project. The following simplified procedure can be used to estimate settlements in a homogeneous sand deposit adjacent to a single pile, Fig. 5. This approach is based on extensive experience from soil compaction projects. It is assumed that intense densification due to pile penetration occurs within a zone corresponding to three pile diameters. The volume reduction resulting from the propagating vibrations will cause settlements in a cone with an inclination 2V:1H, with the tip at a depth of 6 pile diameters. Thus the settlement trough will extend a distance of 3D+L/2 from the centre of the pile, with maximum settlements at the centre of the pile. Maximum settlements, Smaxand average settlements, Smax can be estimated using the following relationship, choosing an appropriate a value of the soil compression factor, from Table 2.The driving energy depends on the method of pile installation, soil stratification and the pile type. The displacement volume of the installed pile has been neglected. The simplified method is applicable for estimating settlements at the perimeter of a pile group. It should be noted that settlements also occur outside the assumed cone, but these are often negligible. The effect of incompressible layers should be taken into account by adjusting the effective pile length."

The City of Toronto is in the middle of “The Big Move”, a 25 year, $50B plan to address congestion in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). This includes 7 new subway or light rail transit lines in various stages of planning or construction, and corresponding major urban densification along major rail corridors in the city. This paper will show how transit infrastructure projects, and projects adjacent to major rail corridors in the GTA, are less economic due to prescriptive based design requirements compared to similar complexity local private projects. Using case histories from several recent projects, the paper will compare adjacent specification driven design and performance-based design examples to show the potential when leveraging performance-based design methodologies safely and effectively rather than a “paint by numbers” approach to design. The paper will describe the risk specification driven design parameters can have on design economy, constructability, and schedule, and outline proposed tendering methodologies for incorporating performance-based designs into contracts to limit risks to both Owners and Contractors.

"Construction of a new tailings dam was required to increase tailings storage capacity at a trona mine near Green River, Wyoming. The new dam was founded on overburden soils underlain by both fractured and competent bedrock. The stored tailings and water had high salt content, resulting in salty seepage water. To reduce the impact of the salty water on groundwater and the Green River, the design of the new tailings dam included a 257,260 SF (23,900 m2) seepage cutoff extending into competent rock.An extensive subsurface characterization was performed prior to completing the design and suitable seepage cutoff methods were evaluated. The approach selected was a full replacement panel using hydromill and clamshell for construction and self-hardening slurry (SHS) for the wall material. Laboratory testing was performed and ongoing monitoring has continued to evaluate the hydraulic conductivity and seepage cutoff performance in the briny environment.The paper includes project background, the collaborative approach and outcomes of the QA/QC program, and the monitoring results for the seepage cutoff wall.PROJECT BACKGROUNDCiner Wyoming, LLC (formerly OCI Wyoming, LLC) owns and operates the Big Island Mine facility near Green River, Wyoming. This underground trona mine has produced soda ash since 1962. The Greater Green River Basin covers much of southwestern Wyoming and extends into northeastern Utah and northwestern Colorado. The Ciner facility is located in the Green River Basin, which is part of the Wyoming Basin physiographic province. The Green River runs to the west and the south of the Ciner facility.Beginning in the early 1990s, Ciner primarily disposed tailings underground in mined-out panels. However, in recent years, underground storage has become limited and some disposal has transitioned to the ground surface. Long-term planning revealed a need to expand Ciner’s surface tailings disposal capabilities. Pond 2, a previously permitted disposal area, was identified as the most viable location for a storage facility. The Pond 2 site is directly north of the Ciner plant facilities, northwest of the active Upper Delta tailings storage facility, and northeast of the Green River (Fig 1)."

"This case study presents the design and construction of an integrated foundation and ground improvement solution utilizing deep soil mixing (DSM) and micropiles. 270 Brannan is a midrise office building in San Francisco that straddles the historic shoreline that was reclaimed in the 19th century. Subsurface conditions include shallow bedrock inland of the historic shoreline, and steeply dipping bedrock overlain by 60 feet of compressible deposits and liquefiable fill on the bay side. Project challenges included mitigating the liquefaction and lateral spreading hazards, addressing settlement concerns in the fill and the bay deposits, developing a cost-effective foundation support solution, assuring satisfactory seismic performance, and addressing construction restrictions with existing adjacent structures.DSM combined with micropiles was identified as the most cost-effective solution for the ground conditions. The DSM panels act both as a liquefaction mitigation mechanism and a foundation support system. Resistance to seismic overturning is provided by uplift-resisting micropiles. The DSM-micropile solution allows the use of efficient conventional spread footing foundations, integrating isolated micropile groups to anchor the shear walls. Successful installation of the system relied on a program of field testing to validate the design and conformance with the design criteria.INTRODUCTIONThe regular grid of surface streets within San Francisco’s South of Market (SOMA) district provides little evidence of the geotechnical complexities that lie below. In the late 1800s, sand dunes, bedrock hills, cliffs, marshes, and mud flats were flattened and filled, concealing their locations and characteristics. The 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire leveled many buildings in SOMA; new buildings were built after 1906 – often on top of rubble and debris from the structures that came before. Locally, the combination of natural geology and historical interventions can produce complex subsurface conditions that vary dramatically over short distances. This is particularly true at locations where tidal mudflats once met bedrock hills at the shore of San Francisco Bay.This case study describes an integrated foundation and ground improvement system implemented for a multistory “Class A” office building at a complex SOMA urban infill site. The system utilizes cement deep soil mixing (DSM) in combination with spread footings and micropiles to address a range of design and construction issues, including liquefaction and lateral spreading mitigation; consistency of earthquake ground motions; shallow foundation support; seismic uplift resistance; and avoidance of loading adjacent basement walls. The system was implemented by a technically-sophisticated owner through a process that included constructive collaborations between the project geotechnical engineer, structural engineer, general contractor, and specialty foundation and ground improvement contractor(s). The system is designed to cost-effectively provide a high level of seismic performance."

"Rhode Island’s new $163.7 million, 2,265 ft (690 m) long, four-lane Sakonnet River Bridge sits just south of the existing bridge in Portsmouth/Tiverton. The bridge, a critical transportation system link between Massachusetts and Rhode Island, has a steel I-girder main span and concrete New England Bulb Tee approach spans. The foundation work was done between October 2009 and July 2010, and the bridge was completed in February 2014.Foundation design and construction challenges make the project noteworthy. There were thick layers of silty glacial soils with bedrock as deep as 400 ft (122 m) below the waterline, coupled with high foundation capacity demands at the river piers in 50 ft (15 m) of water. The Sakonnet was one of the first major bridge projects in the country to incorporate AASHTO Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) guidelines for foundation design and construction. Because of these and other challenges, the engineers conducted two design-phase load test programs on several foundation elements. These programs were successful and allowed the engineers to adjust the final foundation design prior to the start of construction. During construction, the contractors drove thirty 6 ft (1.8 m) diameter steel pipe piles, each with a novel recessed steel plate insert, to depths of 130 to 200 ft (40 to 61 m) at the three river piers. The insert provided increased resistance of the steel pipe piles and saved about $9 million. Also, 457 14x117 en bearing or friction H-section piles were driven to between 50 and 190 ft (15 to 58 m) at five land piers. All piles were driven relatively close to the existing bridge, which remained in service during construction, due to the project team’s precautionary use of instrumentation and the installation of a jacking system.Area GeologyThe Sakonnet River is up to 60 ft (18 m) deep along the bridge alignment and is underlain by a deep bedrock valley. The bedrock valley is buried by at least 350 ft (107 m) of soil, which includes a complex sequence of interbedded glacial soils (glacial till, glaciolacustrine deposits and glaciofluvial deposits), overlain by geologically recent estuarine deposits. The soils having the greatest impact on the foundation resistance are the glaciolacustrine (fine sandy silt or silt) and glaciofluvial (silty sand with gravel, cobbles, and occasional boulders less than about 2.5 ft [0.8 m] in size). "Results from a small-scale laboratory experimental program show the changes in the vertical stiffness and strength of a soft clayey soil adjacent to the shaft of an inserted pile (i.e. expansion of a cylindrical cavity). The experimental program provides a realistic axi-symmetric physical model of an element of a cylindrical pile and the surrounding soil. The study interprets the improvement and assesses its magnitude in vertical stress-strain-strength properties of a normally consolidated soft cohesive soil in response to preloading impact in the radial direction. The results verify that insertion of a cylindrical pile causes densification of surrounding soil in a radial direction due to change in stress state around the pile, and thus consolidating and stiffening of the soil.The test results indicate that most improvement in modulus and strength takes place within a distance of 4 times the radius of a pile, though significant improvement is realized to a distance of 8-10 times the radius, beyond where there is negligible effect. Settlement characteristics of the surrounding soil in a zone of 12 times the pile radius improve significantly after the formation of a cylindrical cavity. The miniature vane shear strength tests show a 1.5 times increase in a zone of 4 times the pile radius compared to the strength at 10 pile radii. The results also imply that the spacing of cylindrical piles should not be more than 4 to 10 times pile radius, so that the surrounding soil matrix may improve the vertical bearing capacity under any foundation or embankment loading.INTRODUCTIONThe engineering community is familiar with different techniques to improve the bearing capacity and settlement characteristics of weak cohesive and organic soils. Some of the in situ techniques to improve the properties of soft ground (e.g. soft clays) prior to placement of foundations are vertical preloading, deep cemenUlime mixing, stone columns, and grouting (Henn 1996; Moseley 1993). In addition to these methods, researchers have recently showed interest in achieving soft ground improvement by means of applying radial compression method for which different names exist including expanding pile (Kelleher et al. 2001 ), Preload™ Pier (Biringen and Edil 2003), and sand compaction pile (Lee et al. 2004). Handy (2001) has described how preloading can also be achieved by imposition of radial loading in soft ground with an expected improvement in stiffness. The idea behind the latter method is densification and consolidation of soft soil in the radial direction by controlled displacement for which the process can be viewed as a cavity expansion problem (Vesic 1972)."

Crosshole Sonic Logging (CSL) only evaluates concrete on the inside of reinforcing cages leaving the outside unevaluated unless other types of testing are performed such as Perimeter Sonic Logging (PSL). While there have been some reports of PSL testing having accurately identified anomalies (e.g. Samtani et al 2005), experience by Case Foundation Company has indicated otherwise where false positives were determined with subsequent coring. Numerous cases of PSL false positives are presented as well as a study where a shaft was installed with both inside and outside tubes, and CSL and PSL data were compared. To date, there is very limited data published on perimeter sonic logging, or Gamma-Gamma Logging (GGL) with tubes on the exterior of drilled shafts. Several cases will be presented where false positives were experienced where PSL testing was performed. In addition, a direct comparison will also be presented where a shaft was installed with both tubes on the inside and outside where CSL and PSL data is compared. BRIEF HISTORY – CSL TESTING AND TUBES ON INSIDE The general procedure of Crosshole Sonic Logging (CSL) testing includes attaching tubes to the reinforcing cage to be able to send a transmitter in one tube and a receiver in another tube with which a sonic pulse is emitted from the transmitter and received in another tube. The time taken for the sonic pulse to travel between the tubes is measured and compared to expected values for the known distance between the tubes. Any increase in time from expected values indicates the sonic pulse traveled through a media other than homogeneous concrete such as objects in the path (spacer wheels, steel bracing, etc.), tube spacing, or soil inclusions. However, variations in arrival time can also result from differences in concrete density. The tubes have traditionally been placed on the interior of the reinforcing cage which protects them during hoisting and placement of the cage and reduces wave refraction caused by modulus of elasticity differences between steel and concrete. This allows the concrete within the interior of the reinforcing cage to be evaluated, but the concrete outside of the cage is excluded from traditional CSL testing. As a result, alternative integrity testing has been developed to not only provide different ways to evaluate the integrity of drilled shafts but to also address the issue of evaluating the concrete outside of the reinforcing cage. These alternative testing methods include Gamma-Gamma Logging (GGL), Thermal Integrity Profiling (TIP testing) and Perimeter Sonic Logging (PSL) which is similar to CSL testing but instead of the tubes placed inside the reinforcing cage, the tubes are placed on the outside of the reinforcing cage as shown in Fig. 1.

"The powerhouse for the Red Rock Hydroelectric Project is being constructed at the toe of the existing U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Red Rock Dam immediately adjacent to the existing stilling basin retaining wall. The powerhouse excavation extends though overburden and 40 feet into rock. Prior to rock excavation, a grouting was performed around the excavation for the purpose of increasing the strength of zones of fractured rock. For the majority of the perimeter, the rock was fairly tight and grout takes were relatively low. However, for a 160 foot extent along the landside of the excavation, extensive grouting was required to treat a two to five foot thick zone characterized by artesian flows from grout holes on the order of 20 gallons per minute (gpm) or higher from a voided zone in rock that was partially filled with sand, clay, and rock fragments. This paper discusses the treatment measures used to fill and improve the strength of this zone, which ultimately entailed a combination of thick cement grout and polyurethane grout, holes spaced as close as 18 inches on-center, and two additional rows of grout holes.IntroductionThe Red Rock Hydroelectric Project (Project) is currently under construction at the existing U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ (USACE) Red Rock Dam on the Des Moines River near Pella, Iowa. At peak generation, the Project will generate up to 55 MW with an average annual energy output of 178 gigawatt-hours.The powerhouse for the Project will be located at the toe of the existing dam immediately adjacent to the existing stilling basin retaining wall. The powerhouse excavation extends up to a depth of 40 feet into rock through the St. Louis Limestone and terminates in the Warsaw Limestone. Prior to rock excavation, grouting was performed around the excavation for the purpose of improving the strength of zones of fractured rock. An auxiliary benefit of the grouting was reducing seepage into the excavation. Grouting began on July 20, 2015 and ultimately concluded on September 26, 2015.Drilling and grouting occurred as planned on the riverside (southwest) of the excavation along the cellular cofferdam and stilling basin wall (grout holes P-1 through S-13) and on the upstream (northwest) side of the excavation along the secant pile excavation support wall (grout holes P-14 through S-19) (refer to Fig. 1). The rock in these areas was generally tight with relatively low grout takes. However, on the landside (northeast) of the excavation (grout holes P-20 through P-28), partially infilled voids and artesian flows were encountered during drilling generally between depths of about 28 to 40 feet."

D.C. United, the professional soccer team located in Washington, D.C., completed a 20,000 seat capacity stadium in July 2018 named Audi Field. The project initially considered a foundation system consisting of roughly 800 prestressed concrete driven piles configured in groups with pile caps. A value engineering alternative proposed in a design-build manner ultimately resulted in the use of 300 single element Auger Cast Piles (ACPs) for the foundation system. The ACPs ranged between 1.5 ft and 4 ft in diameter, were up to 85 ft in length, and were connected through a system of grade beams to accommodate large lateral induced loads. Limitations in conventional analytical methods were encountered during the structural design of the piles due to the complexity of the lateral loading and pile fixity conditions. An innovative approach using advanced finite element modeling that incorporated the framing effects of the grade beams was required to meet the strict movement criteria despite large lateral loads.
