Aluminum alloys are frequently grain refined during solidification in order to promote the formation of an equiaxed grain structure in the casting. The application of Ti-based grain refiners and/or Ti containing master alloys for improving mechanical properties may result in formation of Al-Ti based intermetallics. Although the grain refinement produces many desirable qualities in aluminum castings such as improved castability and mechanical properties, the addition of Ti to Al-Si foundry alloys may lead to the formation of some undesirable intermetallic particles such as AlTiSi and cause a number of operational problems such as nozzle blockage due to segregation and agglomeration of aluminide particles within the nozzle. There are several questions to be clarified when minor amount of Ti is added to Al-Si alloys. They include nucleation and growth of AlTiSi particles, their morphologies and orientation relationships with aluminum matrix and the dissolution of these intermetallics during the course of solidification and/or post solidification treatments. The current study was initiated to study the process and possible mechanism of aluminide dissolution and the related phenomena such as segregation and agglomeration. It reports the results found during reheating of laboratory prepared Ti-added A356 alloy at three temperature ranges of below solidus, mushy zone and above liquidus.

ABSTRACT Testing the effects of bubble size (Db) in a Mo cleaning ?otation column at Highland Valley Copper mine indicated that increasing the proportion of small (< 1 mm) bubbles signi?cantly improved column metallurgical response, compared to typical operation. The results were a three- to four-fold Mo recovery increase and a 1 to 2% Mo (absolute) concentrate grade increase. The improvedcolumn operation produced a 4% Mo plant recovery increase. This study also showed that modelling the ?otation rate constant (k) as an inverse square function of Db was more accurate than considering k to be inversely proportional to Db.

Numerous voices are raising around the world to show how misleading and fuzzy commonly used risk assessments methods are. These criticisms come at a time when public trust in ?proponents of new projects?, operators, private or governmental, seems to have hit a low and the legal system ?targets? public officers. It is common that technical experts and the public strongly disagree in their analysis of risks. Risk definition requires the evaluation of probability and consequences and those words are oftentimes enough to stir great worry to the public. Thus it is nowadays commonly understood that ?reality? is not scientific, but resides in public opinion, hence urging technical people to communicate better, more transparently. Blatant failures on both counts have lead to the emergence of ?new myths? used to justify complacency using ?complexity? and other buzz words as an alibi. This paper (together with its companion presented elsewhere) explores how poor ?common practices? in Risk Assessment contribute to biasing project team, design teams opinions, skew decision-making process and finally misrepresent reality to the public resulting precisely in the raise of public distrust, legal implication witnessed around the world. The discussion first reviews the pitfalls of common approaches (FMEA, Probability Impact Graphs) pinpointing them as possible causes of future legal liabilities. An alarming disconnect also comes from various codes, ISO 31000 itself has this flaw, invoking the term ?acceptable?/?tolerable? without defining it or giving any guidance for its determination. Wide-spectrum public consultation could be developed to define a ?modern? social acceptability criteria helping all the stakeholders making/understanding decisions. Another alarming disconnect comes from the poor definition of consequences of mishaps and their societal ripple effects. This aspect is indeed mostly ignored in codes, leaving ample room to biases and censoring applied to potential losses. In our society no one seems to have anymore the possibility of hiding behind a shroud of ?carefully maintained? misrepresentation. It is time to act and ?write the book? for proper risk assessments avoiding misrepresentations.

"This paper discusses the effect of water chemistry, reagent type, and other environmental factors on the performance of sulfide mineral size reduction and froth flotation processes. Two specific problems will be discussed: l.) the importance of appropriately utilizing the electrochemical window that is created in the grinding process to enhance sulfide mineral recovery by froth flotation; and 2) the impact of steel grinding media versus autogenous grinding on the efficiency of sulfide mineral flotation with varying thiol collectors and water sources.IntroductionThe mutual dependency between size reduction and mineral froth flotation is well recognized from the viewpoint of particle size and mineral liberation characteristics. The purpose of this paper is to discuss two less obvious industrial interactions between size reduction and froth flotation that have come up in the various plant optimization studies conducted by this author. These interactions are complex but appear to be important at the industrial level as plant throughput is directly affected, either positively or negatively by such interactions. Examples v.ill be given on how the method of grinding influences flotation and how different water sources influence the flotation behavior of electrochemically sensitive minerals. With each of these interactions, a number of fundamental research studies have shown previously that some effects can be measured under idealized and very small scale experiments. Such research studies will not be cataloged or exhaustingly reviewed in this paper. Whether these same types of effects can be measured in an industrial environment and are economically important is much less certain. This paper will present some rather unique experiences gained from larger scale test experiences which clearly indicate findings that plant operators should be aware of."

"The property of Sladen Malartic Mines, Limited, is in the northern half of Fourniere township, Abitibi county, Quebec. The group is large, but the part so far found to be of economic interest is a strip 3,200 feet long between the Canadian Malartic property to the west and the East Malartic and National Malartic properties to the east ( Fig. 1).The original claims were staked in 1923 and 1924 by St. B. Sladen and H. S. Kennedy because gold was known to occur on claims nearby. In 1928, detailed mapping of the Malartic Gold Mines property (now Canadian Malartic) showed the presence of an east-west gold-bearing zone traceable almost to the Sladen boundary. During the winter of 1929, a hand-driven drill was used to secure short sections of core through casing pipe sunk to bed-rock. This proved the existence of the main Sladen ore zone, but it was not until the price of gold was increased, in 1934, that serious work was attempted.Underground work was started in 1935 and milling in January, 1938. To the end of 1945, 168,882 oz. of gold were recovered from 1,641,974 tons of ore, an average of 0.103 oz. a ton.GEOLOGYThe bed-rock underlying' the Sladen Malartic property consists mainly of Precambrian greywacke and volcanics that appear to form a conformable series with a general northwest strike and vertical to steep northerly dip. Except where disturbed locally by drag folds or faults, tops face north. Intrusive rocks that range in composition from diorite to granite cut the sediments and volcanics. The basic types, generally quartz diorite and diorite, form dykes or sills in the volcanic rocks. The more acidic types, mainly quartz syenite and related porphyries, intrude the volcanics and the sediments in the form of dykes, sills, and larger, stock-like bodies.The orebodies are parts of slightly shattered or brecciated zones, mainly in greywacke, but partly in syenite, diorite, and volcanics, that have been more or less replaced by fine-grained quartz, pyrite, and minor amounts of sphalerite, galena, sylvanite, petzite, and gold."

INTRODUCTION This symposium at Cu 2019 has been organised to honour and celebrate the career and achievements of Dr Phillip John Mackey, an internationally recognised expert in the production of non-ferrous metals, especially copper and nickel smelting and refining. Phillip was born in Epping, a suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia on 19 April 1941 and is one of 4 children of Gilbert and Philomena (nee Bartlett) Mackey. After completing Primary School in Epping, he attended Marist Brothers High School in Eastwood, Sydney and graduated in 1957 as the Dux of the School. Phillip’s father, being on the staff of the Sydney Technical College, in Ultimo, Sydney had the opportunity in the early 1950s to meet the late Professor Sir Rupert Myers, Foundation Professor of the School of Metallurgy at the New South Wales University of Technology (later called the University of New South Wales or UNSW). Gilbert Mackey was impressed by the new young Professor of Metallurgy and encouraged his son to study metallurgy - at the time an expanding industry in post-war Australia. EDUCATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES Phillip commenced at UNSW in 1958, graduating with honours in 1963. His undergraduate education and training included a few years of part-time study while working at British Motor Corporation on sheet metal forming of car bodies. At University Phillip developed his talent for teamwork. He was a contributing writer to the University newspaper, Secretary of the UNSW Students’ Union and was active in the UNSW Metallurgical Society and co-editor in 1963 of “Metallurgical Review,” the annual journal of the UNSW Metallurgical Society. His diverse interests and curiosity about the world around him were likely nourished while at University. Upon completing his Bachelor’s degree, Phillip was awarded a Commonwealth of Australia Postgraduate Research Scholarship. He began his PhD in 1964 on the thesis topic “Studies in Heat Transfer between Dispersed Liquid Metals and Gaseous Atmospheres” working under the supervision of then Associate Professor Noel Warner, an outstanding Professor at the University. Professor Warner is now an Emeritus Professor at the University of Birmingham and is internationally respected for his pioneering theoretical and practical work on established and innovative smelting processes.

"The Whitehorse Mining Initiative (WMI) brought together all of the key stakeholders in Canada&apos;s mining industry to develop a framework whereby the industry can meet the challenges that it faces into the 21st century. The WMI Accord7 which was signed at the annual Mines Ministers Conference in Victoria, British Columbia, on September 137 1994, touches all of the important issues that confront the industry, including taxation. IntroductionSeptember 13, 1994, was a historical day for Canada&apos;s mining industry. On that day, on the occasion of the annual Mines Ministers Conference in Victoria, British Columbia, the Whitehorse Mining Initiative (WMI) Accord was signed by the leaders of the five principal stakeholders in the industry: industry; government; labour; environmentalists; and aboriginals. The Accord is the culmination of two years of hard work and intense collaboration by these stakeholders. But, the Accord is not the end result. The Accord can better be described as a springboard to a prosperous future for mining in Canada.The WMI had its beginnings at the Mines Ministers Conference in Whitehorse, Yukon, in September 1992 (hence, the name of the initiative). At that time, the mining industry was well aware of the serious challenges facing the industry, including significantly increased competition for mineral investment from other mining countries, coupled with an atmosphere of uncertainty surrounding land access, environmental regulations, and taxation. "Abstract -The application of geophysical technology to resource delineation aims to improve the quality of resource/reserve estimates by integrating high-resolution survey methods, geophysical modeling and inversion with three-dimensional representations of geological and mineral deposit data. The use of geophysics can cost-effectively improve a geological interpretation based only on geological and sampling data. Success depends upon the ability to use geological visualization and modeling software, first to develop a three-dimensional geological model and then to modify it interactively by integrating geophysical data with the geological and sampling data.The high resolution required for mineral delineation geophysics results in a focus on borehole seismic and high-frequency electromagnetic methods. Borehole wireline logging is used to develop an understanding of the relationship between physical properties and geological description. Data from core samples and borehole wireline logs allow the construction of a three-dimensional physical property distribution, consistent with the existing geological interpretation. The three-dimensional physical property distribution is used for both geophysical forward modeling (to compare to field data) and as a starting model in iterative inversions.Advanced visualization techniques allow the simultaneous viewing of the three-dimensional physical property model, the geological information and data from which it is derived, and the geological interpretation and the geophysical results. Geophysical results may be simulated responses from a forward model or the output from a numerical inversion in the form of an updated physical property distribution. Iterative refinement of the geological interpretation is required to ensure consistency with the geological and geophysical data. The key to success with this approach is that all relevant geological, geophysical, and rock property data reside in a common, visual model of the earth.Examples from massive sulfide deposits illustrate the benefits obtained by the integration of geophysical and geological data."

Two sulphide dust secondacy explosions have occurred in the mines of the SUdbury operations of Falconbridge Ltd. during the past 18 months. 'Ihe main similarity between the occurrences is that they both happened in vertical crater retreat blasthole stopes. A relatively high p:,v.tier factor was noted in both instances. other details are enumerated and examined, as well as some results of tests done by Noranda Research on company ore samples.

The use of lightweight aggregate as a constituent of concrete is not a recent development. Pumice was used by the early Romans, in pozzolana cement concretes, in the construction of many of their works. However, the recent development of manufactured lightweight aggregates, such as the expanded shales, vermiculite and perlite, has created a possible use for a whole new group of Portland cement concretes. Concrete can now be produced with unit weights ranging from 30 to 150 pounds per cubic foot and with various insulating, fireproofing, acoustical and structural properties. The tonnage of such materials being used has increased considerably in each of the past ten years, and can be expected to increase for the next several years as availability of the aggregates becomes more widespread and the properties of such concretes become more thoroughly investigated and more generally known. "A regional mapping program, conducted by the Nova Scotia Department of Mines, has shown that the George River Group of pre-Middle Cambrian rocks consists of a wide range of sedimentary and volcanic rocks, intruded by syenite, granite, granodiorite and lesser amounts of gabbro and diorite. Together, these rocks support the high ground of northern Cape Breton Island. Over this large area, the metamorphic grade ranges from low to extremely high.The rocks were folded prior to emplacement of the intrusions in Middle Cambrian time, and there was also post-Mississippian disturbance and faulting, but the structural history and pattern are still only imperfectly understood.Sulphide mineralization is known at Meat Cove, Lime Hill and in a number of smaller deposits. The most Cavour-able host rocks appear to be magnesian Iimestone, or schists derived from shales. Ail known sulphide bodies have an associated halo of retrograde metamorphism; in some cases, this is extensive enough to be used as a prospecting aidA vein of nickel-bearing sulphides has recently been re-discovered in the former gold mine at Second Gold Brook-an association which appears to be unique."

This paper presents a novel action recognition method for observing human workers using interactions between actions and related objects on an internal construction site. This method can be used to measure work rates for labour productivity monitoring. This monitoring is critical because the performance of a construction project is significantly impacted by labour productivity. However, construction sites are generally crowded with a large number of workers and objects. Such congestion disrupts the accurate, automatic recognition of construction workers? actions. This congestion is one reason that existing automatic action recognition studies of construction areas mainly focus on workers? actions themselves. However, the crowded conditions mean that sites could offer a great deal of clues that could be used for automatic action recognition. According to psychological studies, interactions clearly take place between human actions and related objects, such as between hammering and a hammer. Humans use these interactions to recognize actions or objects more accurately. On the construction site, workers, materials, tools, and equipment are carefully planned out ahead of actual construction. The categories of workers and objects are pre-defined and, as noted, specific interactions define relations between worker actions and objects. In this paper, the interactions are limited to human workers and their hand-held objects. Action recognition results can be combined with hand-held object information to improve recognition accuracy. With the limited interactions, experiments in this paper show a significant improvement in action recognition. This paper describes the utilization of these interactions to improve construction action recognition accuracy based on human skeleton data and 2D color video from Microsoft KINECT sensor.

This paper consists of two main parts. The first, under the heading Preparations, deals with suggested preparations to be carried out in advance so that loss of life might be prevented should a fire occur. The second part, under the heading Fire Procedure, deals with actual organized procedure to be followed for the preservation of life if and when a fire occurs. The writer realizes that these preparations and procedures may be to some extent applicable to only a few mines with a relatively simple vein system and that each mine would need to formulate a procedure to conform to its own particular conditions, scope, and degree of complexity. Preparations 1. - Ventilation Control The objective in ventilation control in the event of a tire underground is to keep the travelways, through which men must pass to reach surface, supplied with air not deficient in oxygen and free from gases and smoke. Without some control of the volume and direction of the main air currents flowing through the mine, the success of removing men to surface might be seriously hampered. ? This control is achieved by means of mechanical ventilation forcing air through desired airways and workings with the assistance of doors to regulate the volume and direction of the air flow. In connection with fans and doors, the possibility of short-circuiting should always be taken into consideration, as it can often nullify the value of a fan and possibly trap men in dangerous atmosphere if the short-circuiting involves the fire area. Main fans are often installed so that they can be reversed in a short time. However, fans should not be reversed unless this is found absolutely essential by those in authority. Misjudgment in this respect could cause the loss of life to men who might naturally take refuge in what they believe by experience to be a fresh air stream. Another precaution to be taken is to see that doors in airways are fastened in a fixed position so that they cannot be sucked or blown open when the fan is reversed, otherwise short-circuiting could possibly render the fan useless.

"The industrial processing of ores containing gold and/or platinum minerals is generally mining site specific, e.g. McQuiston and Shoemaker (1985). The variety of various mineral processing techniques employed is extensive and includes size classification, gravity concentration, amalgamation, roasting, cyanidation, chemical leaching, ion ex-change/solvent extraction and froth flotation. Because of the relatively small quantities of Au and Pt that exist in the earth’ s crust, the economical recovery of Pt and Au often requires that the Au and Pt be associated with other industrially important minerals. This association of Au and Pt with other minerals can occur in very complicated mineralogical forms. It is probably safe to say that Au and Pt mineral concentration from natural ores represents some of the most complex metallurgical challenges facing the mining industry.Froth flotation is a technique that is receiving increasing industrial attention for the treatment of finely disseminated and/or associated Au and Pt minerals. The high throughput at relatively low capital cost, the potentially high selectivity, and the existence of a well-established technology for treating more abundant associated minerals such as base metal sulfides makes froth flotation an attractive processing alternative. Broadly speaking, the industrial oriented froth flotation experience with Au and Pt minerals exists in two major categories: 1) the flotation of Au and Pt associated with pyrite (or pyrrhotite) and 2) the flotation of Au and Pt associated with primarily Cu, Zn, or Cu/Pb/Zn containing sulfide ores.In the case of the precious metal association with pyrite (or pyrrhotite), much of the published froth flotation experience comes from South Africa. Typically, such processes are done using an acid side flotation with a collector such as mercaptobenzothiazole. The approach obviously is to float pyrite and hence recover associated gold. Generally the higher the total sulfur recovery the higher the gold recovery. Similar experiences of Pt associated with pyrite are a lot less common mineralogically and hence less well documented industrially. For example, in Canada, Pt is often associated with pyrrhotite but is not really processed as a straight pyrrhotite recovery.For the situation of Au and/or Pt associated with other base metal sulfide minerals, the industrial experience base is quite varied and is well documented from both North and South American operations. The nature of most of these flotation processes is to design, operate, and optimize the installed concentrator to get the Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, etc. that is the bulk of the valuable sulfide ore and then take whatever precious metal recovery comes. Typically, such flotations are on the basic side using standard thiol collectors such as xanthates, dithiophosphates, thionocarbamates, etc. It is very common with such ores to use mixtures of collectors in order to get ""everything"". Often in such plants, there is an inherent balancing act occuring so as to operate in such a manner to reject pyrite (and pyrrhotite) in order to maintain high base metal mineral concentrate grades and yet recover sufficient precious metals such as Au and Pt minerals which often are associated with the iron sulfides being rejected. Obviously in such an environment, the smelter operation often ends up telling the concentrator what the precious metal recovery actually was in a given production period."

The surficial Archæan rocks of the southern gold belt of western Quebec are constricted near Kewagama lake by granite masses to the north and south. This divides the belt into natural eastern and western parts. This paper deals with the eastern part, extending from Malanie to Haig township. In this section the Keewatin-Timiskaming rocks have a length of about 70 miles and end abruptly against garnetiferous gneisses of the Grenville terrain. In the western half of the section where exploration has been under way since the early twenties, there are sixteen mines that are or have been in operation, and eleven prospective mines. In the eastern half where exploration has been carried on since the early thirties, six prospective gold mines are under development, one· of which, Louvicourt Goldfields, is at the initial production stage. Of the sixteen properties in the western half that are operating or have operated, all, except the Golden Manitou, which is a base metal mine, and the old Green Stabell from which there was a small production of copper, produce gold. Of the eleven prospective mines in the western half nine have gold. New Bidlamaque has gold and copper and one, East Sullivan, has copper-zinc ore. Since production began in 1927 gold, silver, zinc, copper, and lead having a total value of about $10,000,000 have been produced from the mines of the eastern section of the southern gold belt of western Quebec.
