The Jinfeng gold mine is one of the three gold mines that Eldorado Gold has in China and it is the second largest gold mine in China. The mine is located in a relatively remote and mountainous area in the southwestern Guizhou province. The orebody is similar to the Carlin type deposit in Nevada. The mill throughput was designed to treat 3,600 tones per day. The ore comes from open pit mining and underground mining, and is fed to one-stage jaw crushing. The crushed ore is stockpiled, reclaimed and then fed to the SABC grinding circuit. After classification with hydrocylones, the ore is floated, and the resultant concentrate is oxidized biologically in a process known as BIOX®. The oxidized concentrate is then washed in a CCD circuit and finally leached with cyanide in a CIL circuit for gold extraction. Jinfeng produces about 180,000 oz of gold per year. This paper introduces operations and modifications of SABC circuit over the past three years, and then describes some technical characteristic of the SAG mill and other circuits in the processing plant. Major modifications and improvements on the SABC circuit are described in the paper, including: 1. Impacts of grinding ball and mill liner with respect to material selection, quality, hardness, manufacturing methods, and interactions between mill liner and grinding ball. 2. Effect of milling operation parameters on milling efficiency. 3. Impacts of SAG mill scats and modifications of grate size to improve mill throughput. 4. Design and construction of a pebble crushing system, and recycle the crushed scats to the SAG mill to improve mill throughput. With the above-mentioned modifications, 20% increase over the design in mill throughput has been realized over the past three years, and operating cost has been significantly reduced. However, some issues still remain, and thus process modifications and technical innovations are still needed.

ABSTRACT: An interactive cable shovel simulation has been developed to mimic any shovel dipper geometry for a given cable shovel operating in any homogeneous face material. This interactive cable allows the user to predict shovel performance in any face material encountered and track both its ground stability and the dipper-ground interaction. An embedded Microsoft® Visual Basic spreadsheet was used as the platform for developing an interactive simulation that allows for maximum user-defined parameter input and interactive visual output. The result is an analytical dipper-ground interaction solution that yields crowd, hoist, and digging effort as a function of face activity position.

THIS PAPER has resulted from a preliminary draft of a background paper prepared anonymously for the Science Council's Special Study of the Solid-Earth Sciences in Canada. The draft was circulated to eighty-four Canadian geologists; forty-eight of these responded with criticisms of the draft. All critical re-marks were considered carefully and most have been incorporated in the final paper in an attempt to balance the author's bias, although this bias undoubtedly still appears. Indications of support for a particular statement or section were also helpful, because many of these contradicted criticisms and enabled the author to judge the consensus. Thus, all criticism could not be incorporated because the referees did not agree. It is interesting that some remarks were con-sidered overstatements by some and too bland by others. The most perplexing critical comment was one which suggested a new author was needed, and went on to name the existing author as the most likely candidate.

"IN FIELD WORK in the Cape Breton Highlands, which are heavily covered with vegetation, it is necessary to run traverses along the valleys of small brooks. We encountered difficulty in closing such traverses, and the following technique was developed to solve this problem. It has been tested in the field for four seasons by several people, and found to be simple, efficient and more accurate than any other compass-and-pace system of which we are aware. So far as we can find, the technique has not been described previously. It may be of use to others.The Cape Breton Highlands of Nova Scotia consist of hills of old intrusive and metamorphosed sedimentary rocks protruding up to 1,000 feet above the general level of the younger sediments which underlie the valleys. The flat hill-tops are the remnants of a plateau; drainage off the edge of this plateau has produced many small steep brooks. They occupy valleys which are up to 800 feet deep, and V-shaped in cross section, with steep sides covered by mixed conifers and hardwoods. The stream at the bottom is rarely more than a few feet wide, with a negligible meander belt, but with many bends, rapids and falls. Visibility along the stream, in consequence, is rarely more than a few hundred feet, and in many places much less.It was found impractical to map the streams by the method of meander lines, as described in many standard surveying texts and hand-books. The limited visibility, and the numerous bends of the brooks, necessitated many corners. Every corner introduces errors. To 'close' a survey with 40 or 50 such corners proved either very time-consuming or impossible. In most cases, however, the general direction of a valley may be obtained from an aerial photograph, or by direct observation, and this became the basis of the method adopted."

The off gas from a smelter is cooled and dust removed in an electrostatic precipitator before approximately 95% of the sulphur dioxide (S02) is converted to sulfuric acid. However, the tail gas may need to be polished to remove the rest S02 to meet demands. A flue gas desulphurization (FGD) system, as usually applied to S02 removal on coal and oil fired Power Station, is suitable for polishing tail gases from copper smelters. The ALSTOM Seawater FGD process makes use of the alkalinity in the seawater to absorb and neutralize S02. Before being returned to the sea, the seawater is treated to comply with environmental regulations. As the ALSTOM Seawater FGD process uses no reagent and produces no byproduct, it is extremely cost-effective for coastal installations. The first SWFGD plant started operation in 1968. Over 60 of these units have been installed worldwide. The ALSTOM Seawater FGD process removes S02 from flue gas flows corresponding to a total of 70,000,000 Nm3 /h. Suitable for thermal power stations, smelters and oil refineries, ALSTOM Seawater FGD plants efficiently treats flue gases in the range of 300,000 Nm3/h to 2, 700,000 Nm3 /h per FGD plant, containing 20 - 6,500 ppm of S02.

"Laboratory wear tests are important tools that can be used for the evaluation of materials for wear applications and mitigation of wear problems in the mining industry. However, laboratory test parameters must be fully characterized and test results must be carefully interpreted if a material selection is to be made. Failure to do so may lead to erroneous conclusions. Suitable lab-oratory tests are valid only if they reflect the field conditions to which materials are subjected. Therefore, it is important to know, in detail, the field conditions, as well as the wear test techniques being considered. It is important to recognize the limitations of the various wear tests and the wear test data published in the literature. This work will review present wear testing technology, including the various wear tests avail-able, wear test equipment and test limitations. Several wear test procedures will be related to common equipment used in the mining industry.IntroductionThis paper will concentrate on non-lubricated wear mechanisms, because they are the most costly to the mining industry. Very frequently we are faced with the task of selecting materials for wear applications or improving existing systems that are giving poor performance. There are plenty of examples in the literature of practical wear cases and ranking of materials for wear applications. It is also very common to find materials manufacturers’ data -sheets listing wear tests results by comparing their materials performances against those of competitors. Much of the published wear data lack the description of the type of wear test, test parameters and the type of wear mechanism to which the data should be applied (if any).Before considering wear test data for a specific problem one should ask which type of wear mechanism is involved? What type of test and what test parameters were used to produce the results? Even if the type of wear tests and parameters are known, how accurate and useful are the published wear data? How are the results related to a particular type of wear? It is important to point out that even the standardized wear tests, such as those in ASTM standards, have limitations. Such limitations are recognized and clearly spelled out in the standards themselves. Basically, wear tests may lead to erroneous results if the test is not able to repro-duce the same wear mechanisms encountered in the field. Therefore, the use of published results may be helpful, as a starting point, but may be of little value for a final material selection.This work will discuss the main types of non-lubricated wear mechanisms encountered in the mining industry. In addition, it will discuss the many wear tests available and their correlation with the various types of wear mechanisms. The limitations of several standardized wear tests and the limitation of using published wear data will also be discussed."

"Special salt protection rings containing a water-swell• able, polymeric sealant are in successful operation in Canadian potash shafts. Installed above the Prairie Evaporite salt formation at a depth of 3,000 feet, the sealant is preventing formation water migration into the salt and pressure build-up on the concrete lining of both production and service shafts. The salt protection rings are not under the hydrostatic pressure of the formation water.The chemical sealant in use has the unique property of imbibing water and swelling. •Therefore, any water at• tempting to flow by the seal ring actually produces a tighter seal.The purpose of this paper is to discuss the sealant and its properties and uses. Installation of the material and its operation in two Canadian mine shafts is described."

"A hybrid discrete-continuum numerical scheme is developed to study the behavior of hydraulic fractures crossing natural fractures. The fully coupled hybrid scheme utilizes a discrete element model for a core domain, within which the hydraulic fracture propagates and interacts with natural fractures, and a surrounding continuum domain to better approximate boundary effects. The results show that the behavior of hydraulic fractures crossing natural fractures is affected by a combination of factors. Nevertheless, three fundamental crossing scenarios can be identified from all of the simulations: no crossing, partial crossing, and direct crossing. Each crossing scenario has a distinct injection pressure history which may suggest guidelines for interpreting field hydraulic fracture injection data. Additionally, the capability for these models to generate synthetic microseismicity makes them appealing for the integration of microseismic field data with the reservoir geomechanics for ultimately providing a practical engineering tool for improvement of well completion and stimulation. The model is capable of examining and verifying four different shear deformation mechanisms associated with a propagating hydraulic fracture. The natural fracture can fail solely due to the stress perturbation of the passing hydraulic fracture or it can fail due to a combination of stress and pore pressure changes across different types of interaction scenarios. The simulations also illustrate that the level of fracturing complexity increases as the number and extent of the natural fractures increase. INTRODUCTIONAlthough hydraulic fracturing technique has been applied extensively as a reservoir stimulation technique in the oil and gas industry for over 60 years (Economides & Nolte, 2000), it is one of the key factors promoting the shale gas boom in the past decade (King, 2010; International Energy Agency, 2014). The hydraulic fracturing of shales can be differentiated from hydraulic fracturing of conventional reservoirs by the fact that shale formations often have a pre-existing discrete fracture networks which greatly impact the hydraulic fracture propagation. Based upon field production data as well as microseismic observations, it is believed that so called “fracture complexity” may result from interactions between a created hydraulic fracture and pre-existing natural fractures and planes of weakness (Warpinski, 2009; Maxwell & Cipolla, 2011)."

An electric survey from a 'plane flown over the ground is much faster and cheaper than an electric survey carried out on the ground. The results are obtained as continuous recordings that are resolvable into both a depth expression and a conductivity effect, so that the indications are easier to evaluate, as well as to correlate from one flown line to the other. The prospecting technique adopted in our electric airborne surveys may be brie fly described as follows: A loop of many turns of insulated copper cable is fastened around the fuselage of the 'plane and connected to a generator supplying a few ampere alternating current, usually of a frequency less than 1,000 cycles per second. Just as the current in the primary coil of a common transformer will induce current in the secondary coil when shorted, the alternating magnetic field from this primary current now induces alternating current in electric conductors that happen to be located in the vicinity of the path over which the 'plane is flown. This induced secondary current in each conductive section of the ground causes, in turn, an alternating magnetic field, secondary field, which disturbs or dampens the normal alternating magnetic field from the primary loop flown by the 'plane. These secondary fields are then picked up and recorded by the help of detecting solenoids, amplifiers, and recorders carried in the 'plane. By closer study of such a secondary field it is possible to localize the secondary current causing it and, thereby, the conducting body that contains the secondary current. In the 'plane are continuously recorded, besides the amplitude or intensity of the field, also the phase, which is a measure of how much the recorded secondary field is out of step with the primary field.

"OUT IN BRITISH COLUMBIA, we have a legendary creature called ""The Sasquatch,"" a large ape-like creature which, according to those who claim to have seen it, somewhat resembles the Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas. Through the years, the legend bas been perpetuated by hunters and prospectors who return from remote wilderness areas with fantastic tales about hairy creatures, twice the height of an average human being, who leave 2-ft-long footprints in the soft forest floor. However, the existence of this creature bas never been proven and the attitude in British Columbia circles is that the whole thing constitutes either a great discovery or a giant hoax, and is about equally unbelievable either way.The Sasquatch, however, is not the only giant in British Columbia. If you find the Sasquatch story un-believable, you'll fi nd it just as hard to believe what is happening in the mining industry out west. We have opened four new mines so far this year (1967), another mine is expected to be brought into production before the end of the year and any mining man will tell you it's just the start of a mining boom which will continue for many years if metal prices are maintained and the federal government sees fit to discard the taxation changes pro-posed in the Carter Royal Commission Report regarding mining."

In the late 1960's concerns about the natural environment reached high levels within North America and provided activists with suitable platforms for exerting influence over the general public and politicians. In response a host of regulatory mechanisms were developed, statutes, voluntary measures, land grants, codes of practices etc. Emerging environmental awareness from the era provided impetus for rapid technological change that encompassed all industries, especially the base metal business. The resulting clean up impacted all aspects of copper production, dealing with issues such as waste disposal, water and air quality with specific impact on emissions of sulfur dioxide and particulate. This paper provides a perspective of these changes reviewing the macro-economic impact of environmental movement in mining with its specific implications to the copper smelting industry. The fundamental challenges that were faced by the old, but capital-intensive North American plants and the approaches taken to deal with the changing times are reviewed with special emphasis on the conceptual approach to smelter S02 abatement and different paths taken in the USA and Canada. The role of economics, sustainable R&D and presence of technical infrastructure that facilitated the change process is elucidated, and speculations are made about the future state of pyrometallurgy and the natural environment. The operation of Quarry and Aggregate sites are similar to factory production, since it contains sequential production processes, tasks and activities to produce the output product. Compared to the plant though, the quarry processes are generally not synchronized and controlled towards the overall throughput of the site in real time. Some quarries control parts of the production but do generally not utilize real-time technologies for the whole site and all its activities. This fact indicates a general improvement potential in increased productivity at quarry sites, but also unsolved challenges for the same reason. The main contribution of this paper is the presentation of a Lean based method for how to describe the processes to identify control improvement potential within a site. The aim of the identified improvements is to increase overall site productivity by optimizing site, fleet and machine utilization towards the overall throughput, and minimizing operational expenses and inventories. Further the paper exemplifies the method?s usability with field studies at operational quarry plants successfully identifying and quantifying potential wastes and improvements. In addition the identified productivity improvements based on increased control and automation indicate challenges and needs in wireless communication and sensing technologies.

"The development of computer process control at the Lake Dufault concentrator is reviewed and the on-stream X-ray analysis -computer system is described briefly. Some applications of the computer in metallurgical process control are described.The computer sequences slurry sample streams to the analyzer and translates the analytical results from voltage signals to elemental percentages. The required flotation reagent flow rates are calculated from analyses and mill-feed tonnage rates and the reagent feeders are set automatically to provide such flow rates. X-ray calibration time has been reduced from about 45 minutes to 15 minutes by the use of a computer program. Metallurgical and operating personnel have acquired the ability to program the computer and have extended the system capability to allow the calculation of recoveries, averaging of mill data, application of ore specific gravity in grinding control, control of oxidized ore flotation and the development of an economic recovery program."

"Analytical engineering design is based upon a trial-and-error iterative and deterministic process. Within this process, the engineer obtains some estimated values, plugs them into de facto closed-form equations, and receives output, which is expected to be a single number that serves as the basis for the design. This number is typically a factor of safety, or some other equivalent strength-stress ratio. This provides the engineer with a quick and relatively quantitative design methodology. This can create problems however, because in mining applications, the actual in situ system is highly variable, complex and often chaotic, which can lead to potentially incorrect conclusions that result in unsafe designs. A more appropriate and reliable approach is a probabilistic analysis for engineering design. This process is used widely in civil and other engineering disciplines, but is often overlooked for applications in coal mine design. Additionally, it seems the amount of past studies using this approach, especially in coal mine design, are rather limited. Considering how the probabilistic approach can account for uncertainty in parametric values and how unpredictable a mining design can be, the authors believe that this approach has potential in mining. This paper will focus on a summary of past studies related to probabilistic analysis in coal mine pillar design and provide recommendations for future work that could improve design reliability. INTRODUCTIONFeasibility and fundamental design procedures for excavations often start with an assessment of mine openings, pillar design, and the surrounding structure by using a deterministic approach with closedform solutions (ex. Bienawski, Obert-Duvall). These are reliable methods, but designers know that the inputs in these closed-form solutions are estimates at best and do not incorporate any degree of uncertainty. This is therefore not an optimal design procedure.A more appropriate design should incorporate some uncertainty because of the chaotic and variable nature of geology and mining conditions in general. In an attempt to account for uncertainty, a probabilistic approach can be adopted, which accounts for deviations in variables and provides a more optimum design solution. By applying a probabilistic approach, a designer can look at multiple failure scenarios at the same time instead of using the same deterministic design over and over."

Commonly the most frequent method of calculating the overall mass balance of a multi mineral platinum-group metal (PGM) concentrator circuit in Southern Africa has been through the use of spreadsheets, typically Microsoft EXCEL®. While there are some advantages in using spreadsheet based mass balances during the conceptual design phase of the project, their use becomes limited in the detailed design phase of the project. This paper discusses the successful application of METSIM® for mass balancing of a PGM concentrator and highlights the benefits gained during the conceptual and design phase of the project.

"This paper presents key outcomes of a major Asia-Pacific Partnership project between the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation and Huainan Mining Industry Group Co. Ltd. to develop and demonstrate advanced technologies at Pansan mine, Huainan, China. A comprehensive approach assessed fundamental strata and coal seam methane conditions during mining and optimized mining sequences and coal mine methane capture systems. The project demonstrated a practical approach and procedures for advanced coal and methane co-extraction systems, improved mining safety and efficiency, increased methane capture and use, and reduced fugitive methane emissions.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article donne les principaux résultats d’un grand projet de partenariat Asie- Pacifique entre le CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) [Organisation de recherche scientifique et industrielle du Commonwealth australien] et le Huainan Mining Industry Group Co. Ltd.; ce projet cherche à développer et à démontrer des technologies avancées à la mine Pansan, à Huainan, en Chine. Une perspective globale a évalué les conditions fondamentales des strates et du méthane dans les couches de charbon durant l’exploitation et a optimisé les séquences d’extraction et les systèmes de captage du méthane dans les mines de charbon. "The PFK FeNi Smelter was re-commissioned by Solway Resources in 2002, ending a long period of economic decline in the adjacent town. In 2009 Hatch was retained to design, supply and install a custom furnace crucible that would accommodate a capacity increase from 34 MW to 40 MW and increase campaign life through binding and cooling technologies, as part of ongoing improvement efforts. The involvement of PFK personnel was critical to the successful integration of the new furnace technology with the existing process and operational practice. The furnace upgrade project was completed in 18 months during 2010 – 2011. Since start-up, the furnace has exceeded production expectations, operating successfully at 42 MW.INTRODUCTIONAfter ceasing operations in the 1990’s, the Pobuzhsky Ferronickel Combine (PFK), located in central Ukraine, was stripped of useful equipment and deteriorated while dormant. The surrounding town experienced a period of economic decline throughout the 1990’s. Solway Industries purchased the complex in 2002 and began a systematic incremental program to re-commission the smelter using both local expertise and specialists from other parts of the former Soviet Union. This led to the re-birth of PFK as a successful toll-smelting complex, and a renaissance for the surrounding economy.As part of the continuing improvement program, PFK approached Hatch in 2009 to study the possibility of a capacity expansion from 34 MW to 40 MW. It was decided, based on the results of the study, to design and install a custom furnace crucible integrating the unique PFK FeNi process with modern Hatch furnace technology. This novel approach had many benefits, including: maximum re-use of existing furnace components (off-gas, feed equipment and transformers), minimal impact on upstream and downstream equipment and building structure, and the retention of a familiar operating regime. The latter was a key factor in the success of the project, as it allowed the extensive operating expertise of the PFK staff to remain highly relevant to the upgraded furnace. This led to minimized capital investment, a rapid start-up and no significant operational challenges switching over to the new equipment incorporating Hatch furnace technology."

Introduction A Hypothetical Scenario: Suppose that your company's research department has developed a new device which represents a significant innovation. As discussed below, assuming that the costs are worth it, a patent application probably should be filed before any public disclosure is made. In general, if you do not file a patent application prior to a public disclosure, you will lose rights. Major Types of Intellectual Property In this paper, intellectual property protection is broadly discussed. Practical steps which can be taken to minimize the possibility of losing intellectual property rights (and maximizing the possibility of benefiting from your company's intellectual property) are outlined at the end of this paper. The issues discussed in this paper are somewhat complex, because a number of outcomes are possible, depending on the facts. It is strongly recommended that you seek legal advice in your jurisdiction in connection with any particular circumstances relating to intellectual property rights. "Intellectual property" refers to a number of different types of rights. The major types of intellectual property are: (i) patents; (ii) trademarks; and (iii) copyright. Trade secrets are also usually considered to be a type of intellectual property, and they are also discussed in this paper because of their importance. In general, each of these types of intellectual property protects different subject matter, although there can be some overlap. Intellectual property rights are generally territorial in nature. The scope of protection of a type of intellectual property in a country (e.g., patent protection) depends on whether the specific national requirements for protection have been met.

This study was aimed at separating and recovering arsenic, antimony, and tin from refining byproducts generated in a nonferrous smelter. The target byproduct was a silicate slag containing the above elements. The silicate structure of the slag was destroyed by alkali roasting, which then enabled leaching of arsenic, antimony and tin in solution effectively. Arsenic was selectively leached out by hot water after alkali roasting of the slag, while remained antimony and tin in the residue were leached out by a hot hydrochloric acid solution. However, when the solid-liquid ratio in the leaching solution was increased, hydrous gelatinous silica (gel-like silica) was formed during the hydrochloric acid treatment and filtration became difficult. Therefore, high temperature and high pressure leaching was attempted to improve the filterability of the silica leaching residue. In the high temperature and high pressure treatment, the hydrous gel-like silica was transformed into easily filterable aggregated silica, and thus, filtration became easy. By investigating the neutralization and sulfurization treatment for the obtained hydrochloric acid leachate (second leachate), it was possible to separate antimony and tin. INTRODUCTION This study aims to separate arsenic and recover valuable metals such as antimony and tin from refining byproducts generated in a nonferrous smelter. The target smelting byproduct is antimony-containing slag in this study. In many cases, alkali roasting was adopted as pretreatment for extraction and recovering valuable metals from smelting residues and wastes (Rao, 2006). For antimony-containing slag in this study, one effective method for separating arsenic is to convert arsenic to sodium arsenate (Na3AsO4) by roasting with a sodium compound and then to remove arsenic by hot water leaching. In addition, by alkali roasting, the silicate structure of the slag is destroyed, and effectively alkalizing tin and antimony is accomplished. Then, precipitating and recovering tin and antimony leached into the acid solution are considered possible by sulfurization and neutralization treatments. In this research, we conducted basic studies on the following. 1) Destruction of silicate structure in slag by alkali roasting and leachability of arsenic. 2) Conversion of hydrous gelatinous silica to aggregated silica by hydrochloric acid treatment of residues after arsenic leaching under high temperature and high pressure, as well as leachability of antimony and tin. 3) Separation and recovery of antimony and tin by sulfurization and neutralization treatments of hydrochloric acid leachate. These topics of investigation can support to consider the separation and recovery process of arsenic, antimony, and tin from antimony containing slag.
