"Several companies targeting Rare Earth Elements (REE) around the world have completed a Preliminary Economic Assessment showing positive project financial results. Although REE ores may contain high REE value, financing these projects remains difficult in part due to the number of processes required to valorize the elements and the relatively low yield of these processes. Direct ore leaching without the production of a concentrate may reduce the capital and some operating expenditures through process simplification, and increase revenues because of REE recovery improvement.A silicate REE ore is used to test various hypotheses regarding whole ore processing and to develop a simplified flowsheet. An atmospheric leach (200 kg/t H2SO4) of crushed whole-ore containing 0,6% REE, followed by impurity removal and REE precipitation recovers 80% of the REEs in a solution containing REE and Th. The high value contained in most REE deposits makes whole-ore approaches worth considering for most projects, given the losses of valuable species typically associated with the production of a REE mineral concentrate from the ore. INTRODUCTIONRare Earth Elements (REE) find applications in modern and clean technologies, whether civil, industrial or military. With China producing more than 90% of the world’s REE, the embargo imposed by this country in early 2010 increased REE prices for a three year period. With prices having shrunk back many-fold from their peak value, projects put forward during the hike are struggling to secure financing. Owing in part to unconventional processes such as acid-baking and solvent extraction, REE plants are high capital cost and high operating-cost units, and present technological risks (Verbaan et al., 2014)."

"The Keystone porphyry molybdenum deposit, located in southcentral British Columbia, is hosted by intrusive rocks of the Cretaceous Mount Lytton batholith and the early Tertiary Keystone quartz diorite stock. The molybdenite mineralization is associated with rhyolite porphyry dikes flanking a large 1300 m by 2100 m breccia complex. Recognition of the potential for the buried molybdenum porphyry system was based on quartz-molybdenite vein fragments within the hydrothermal breccias.The full extent of the molybdenum mineralization is not known. The few deep drill holes along one comer of the breccia complex defines strong metal zoning of molybdenum and associated elements of F, Mn, Zn, Pb, Au, Ag, Fe and W about the molybdenum stockwork mineralization that may be useful for guiding additional exploration. The best mineralization occurred near the base of the deepest drill hole with 0.114% Mo in rhyolite porphyry near the edge of the breccia pipe at a depth of 1350 m.The exploration history of the deposit has been complex, focussing on both porphyry-style mineralization and precious metal veins and stockworks on the periphery of the porphyry system. Exploration to date has defined an attractive porphyry molybdenum system with uneconomic grades at great depth; however, there remains significant potential to define economic mineralization elsewhere in the Keystone porphyry system and adjoining occu""ences."

Roasting processes are divided into several elementary mechanisms, any of which could be significant or pre-dominant in a particular roast. The elementary processes considered in-elude beat transfer, gas-solid inter-actions with accompanying mass transfer between the bed and furnace atmosphere, vapor phase transport processes in solid-solid interactions, and solid phase diffusion processes. Examples are chosen of processes in which one of these mechanisms pre-dominates and some recently obtained data is presented to support the existence and significance of these mechanisms. Proposals are also made for future research in these areas, and for utilizing the information in the improvement of roaster capacities’ OASTING of ores as a preparative treatment for smelting or leaching has been practiced for so long that its origin has been lost in antiquity, but little has been under-stood of its basic nature until fair-ly recent times. The industrial minerals industry in Newfoundland and Labrador is a significant contributor to the provincial economy. The variety ofcommodities produced reflects the diverse geological environment from which they come. A highlight of the past decade has been the continuing development of dimension stone quarries, with producers now active in anorthosite, gabbro, granite and sandstone. Other dimension stone prospects have been identified and are in various stages of assessment and development. Western Newfoundland hosts a large resource of limestone, dolomite and marble. It provides raw material for industries that produce Portland cement, agricultural limestone and aggregate, as well as chemical-grade limestone and dolomite products. In western Labrador, dolomitic marble is quarried for use in the production of self-fluxing iron ore pellets. The recent opening of a new gypsum quarry at Fischells Brook signalled the beginning of a new era in the commercial production ofgypsum, a commodity which the province has produced since the 1950s. Hopefully it will emulate the nearby Flat Bay Quarry (now closed) which was a long-time exporter to markets along the U.S. eastern seaboard, in addition to supplying local demands. Oil production and continuing exploration in the Newfoundland offshore has renewed interest in local barite deposits for potential use in drilling fluids. Already there has been some production from the Collier Point deposit, and at Buchans, an existing plant is being refurbished to recover barite from a large tailings pond. Emerging new industries include the development of an antimony mine in central Newfoundland, the development of silica deposits near Labrador City for silicon metal production, and reactivation of the St. Lawrence fluorspar mine. The province has many deposits with development potential such as rare metals at Strange Lake, white marble at Roddickton and salt deposits near St. George's Bay region.

Introduction We are all familiar with the bright and attractive colours of the roofs of our suburban houses and country cottages, but few of us fully appreciate the complex and highly technical nature of the business which produces these roofings. Roofing granules consist of small broken particles of certain types of rocks, burned clay products, or slag. They are used either in their natural state or artificially coloured and are affixed onto one surface of asphalt sheeting. Their main functions are to protect the roof against external fire hazard, prolong its life, and enable it to withstand extremes of weather over a period of years without deteriorating. Pleasing designs and colours are added attractions. The reverse, or inner side, of the sheeting is coated with a film of talc or fine mica to prevent it sticking when rolled up for convenience of handling for transport. The finished sheets or strips are cut into a variety of shapes for roofing shingles, or for sidings which resemble rows of bricks separated by mortar. In Canada, the consumption of roofing granules has increased fourfold in the past decade and indications are that the industry will continue to expand. At present, fourteen plants are engaged in manufacturing granule-coated roofings, but, apart from a relatively small output of natural granules by two producers in British Columbia, only one eastern producer makes both natural and coloured granules in Canada, and these only for its own use. The annual consumption is now over 77,000 tons of roofing granules valued at more than $1,600,000, but about 62 per cent of the tonnage is imported. It is thus apparent that the production of Canadian-made granules, both natural and coloured, could be considerably increased. This paper is presented in order to give an outline of the industry and at the same time to point out its difficulties and pitfalls.

The Strathcona mine, with a large new underground operation and concentrator, was recently brought into\ production by Falconbridge Nickel Mines Ltd. The tailings disposal and water utilization problems at Strathcona are described in this paper, with sections devoted to the Moose Lake watershed system, tailing impounds, the construction of dams and the operation of the Moose Lake neutralization plant for the elimination of acidity, including the equipment used.

This paper, a follow-up to an earlier study, gives the history of Canadian developments in mineral processing from 1921 to the fall of 1964. It deals extensively with comminution and flotation, and then goes on to cover the fields of gravity concentration, magnetic concentration, cyanidation, the processing of uranium ores, and instrumentation. Several outstanding examples of installations are given. The paper concludes with a discussion of present-day trends in mineral processing. Introduction T HE history of the developments in mineral processing in Canada from its earliest times to 1920 has already been published by one of the authors (1). The present paper is thus a logical follow-up to bring this history to date. From 1834 to 1920, mineral processing in Canada, as elsewhere in the world, was in its formative stage. This, however, prepared the ground for developments that have resulted in a mining empire from the Atlantic to the Pacific, a mining empire which could be said to be almost on par with that in the United States.

"AbstractThe uraninite-bearing deposits in the Charlebois Lake area of northeastern Saskatchewan are unusual and important concentrations of uranium. They were first discovered in 1949 and preliminary development work to the end of the 1951 field season indicates the probability that this will become •another uranium producing district. The deposits are in zones bordering granite masses. These zones are of migmatite (mixed rocks) composed of calcium-rich meta-sediments intruded and replaced by a fine-grained white pegmatite. Locally this pegmatite is replaced by an end fraction which is relatively rich in fine-grained disseminated uraninite; it is these occurrences that constitute the bodies of economic interest.The fine-grained white pegmatite contains plagioclase feldspar more lime-rich than that in the granites of which it is an end differentiate. This extra lime, evidently derived from the intruded sediments, would result in the raising of the temperature of crystallization of the pegmatite-forming magma, thus consolidating it rapidly near the granite contacts as a fine-grained pegmatite. The end liquor containing uranium was evidently locally concentrated in minor fracture zones in these pegmatites. Where no lime sediments were present. the coarse-grained alkaline pegmatites were formed. Their crystallization would not be accelerated and the uranium would tend not to be localized in the pegmatite but to migrate and consolidate at lower temperatures with the end products, possibly in some instances as pitchblende veins."

"THE Canadian Advisory Committee on Coal Research, which is commonly known as CACCR, has been in existence for the past five years and has held annual meetings during that period. This Committee is comprised of representatives from: the Mines Branch, Fuels and Mining Practice Division, Ottawa; the Geological Survey of Canada; the Dominion Coal Board; and the Provincial Research Councils and Foundations. It embraces all coal research in Canada that is sponsored, for the most part, by Government funds.To bring the country's coal research activities to the notice of the Canadian coal industry, the Coal Research Committee of the Coal Division, C.I.M., passed a resolution at the 1964 business meeting in favour of recommending the publication of an annual research report prepared by the CACCR. The first such report was published in the September, 1964, issue of the C.I.M. Bulletin; the second appeared in the November, 1965, issue of the same publication."

"Option pricing is used in finance for valuing options to buy (or sell) shares at some future date because it provides a convenient framework for quantifying values subject to uncertainty. As one of the main sources of uncertainty in mining is the price (sales) of the metal, this approach can also be used for valuing mining projects.The first part of this paper reviews options and option pricing; the second part presents the approach developed by Brennan and Schwartz (1985) for using option pricing to value natural resources. Several applications of this methodology have been published; these are described. From a mining point of view, the assumptions made by Brennan and Schwartz are too simplistic. The weaknesses are discussed with a view to improving an apparently promising new way of assessing the value of projects. IntroductionThe collapse of the British merchant banking group, Barings, has highlighted the risks that can be incurred by speculators and arbitragers in the futures and options markets. But this negative attention on futures and options should not make us forget their positive aspects. They can provide producers and consumers of metals with more predictable sales prices. The introduction of the new traded average price options, TAPOS, by the London Metal Exchange in January 1997 is a response to this need. Equally important, the theory that the finance industry has developed for valuing options provides an interesting framework for valuing mineral projects as well. While this paper was being revised, the South African gold mining house, JCI, announced that it was using a methodology based on option pricing for valuing the mineral rights to deeplevel gold resources (see Box 1)."

Abstract The Britannia Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, have replaced diamond drills with percussion drills and tungsten: carbide bits for most of their blast hole drilling operations and have thereby reduced ore breaking costs. Two-inch Carset bits .are used, with one-inch hexagonal Atlas Chippewa alloy steel in 3-foot .and 6-foot lengths. Locally made couplings of Atlas SPS 245 alloy steel connect the rods. The machines used are 31½-inch automatic leyners with lugged or anvil block chucks. For drilling holes below the horizontal, the lugged machines with special adapter rods made from 114- inch solid round Atlas SPS 245 are required. These rods are lugged at one end and a water hole is drilled for six inches into the other end. Over this rod is placed a water swivel which permits the water or air to be sent directly into the steel. A decreased cost per foot, increased footage per shift, and the use of standard equipment and crews are some of the main advantages of tungsten carbide drilling over diamond drilling. Introduction Long-hole drilling with percussion drills and sectional steel was introduced in several American mines some twenty-five years ago. It did not prove very successful, however, because the rapid gauge loss in steel bits necessitated the use of very large starter bits. This in turn rapidly fatigued the straight carbon-steel then in use, made it difficult to maintain the couplings, and resulted in a slow drilling rate. The introduction of the tungsten carbide insert bit and alloy drill still has changed this picture and opened real possibilities for the application of percussion drills to blast-hole drilling. If this type of bit had been perfected ten years ago, much of the research work and experimenting done to apply diamond drills to ore breaking would have gone toward developing the application of the tungsten carbide bit to this problem.

A brief description is given of the process used by Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited to recover cobalt metal from nickel-cobalt sulphides. A description of the equipment with the operating conditions is presented with an evaluation of the corrosion test results for various stainless steels and other acid resistant materials for the part of the process involving the sulphuric acid leaching of nickel-cobalt sulphide slurry under air pressure. SINCE 1954 the Sherritt Gordon ammonia leach process has been used at Fort Saskatchewan to recover nickel metal, copper sulphides and cobalt-nickel sulphides from nickel concentrate produced at Lynn Lake, Manitoba. 'To develop a process for recovering cobalt and nickel from the cobalt-nickel sulphides, studies were carried out in the Sherritt Gordon laboratory and pilot plant and, late in 1957, continuous acid leaching of sulphides was started in the refinery. "The primary purpose of conducting aeromagnetic surveys in mineral areas, and interpreting the data thus obtained, is to aid in the extrapolation of the geology from known to unknown areas-both in a horizontal and vertical direction. This paper describes one of the steps in the process of interpretation which has, in the past, been neglected-that of mathematically or quantitatively treating the data in two-dimensional map form. For this, several techniques are available.These techniques determine the downward and up-ward continuation fields, the second vertical derivatives and the fields reduced to the pole from the total magnetic field data. Second vertical derivatives and downward continuation fields increase the resolution and sharpness in the observed magnetic anomalies and tend to outline the surface traces of causative bodies with a reasonable amount of success in most cases. The 'reduction to the pole' is a mathematical process of calculating the field at the north pole from the observed field so that the un-desirable effects of the dip and declination of the earth's field and of rock magnetization are eliminated.New and accurate means of carrying out these calculations have been developed by the Geological Survey of Canada. In this paper are also presented the results of a method for obtaining the symbol and numerical map of the processed data with the help of the printer associated with the computer. The tedious work of digitizing magnetic field values in a map can be speeded up by the use of a semi-automatic coordinatograph, with the aid of which field values can be accurately transferred to punched cards."

"IntroductionTHE KNOWLEDGE about the mineral resources in a region ranges from relatively precise ore-reserve estimates for known deposits to probabilistic estimates concerning the speculative resources which may be discovered in future at greater depths and in the less-explored parts of the region. Previously developed probabilistic methods for regional resource evaluation (1) are based on the following two assumptions.(1) The probability that a specific block of rock, or part of a region close to the topographic surface, contains undiscovered deposits can be estimate d by weighting selected geological, geophysical or geochemical parameters for that block. The weights are computed by considering similar environments which are known to contain deposits.(2) Some of the characteristics of the undiscovered deposits, such as ore tonnages and average grades of metals contained in the ore, can be evaluated by considering probability distributions f or known deposit data. These methods were initially applied to Precambrian deposits in the Abitibi Volcanic Belt of the Canadian Shield (1).Since 1972, statistical methods for quantitative resource evaluation have been applied to the occurrences of the mainly Paleozoic base metal deposits in t he Canadian Appalachian Region. The objectives of this project (Project Appalachia) have been discussed by Leech (2) in a paper that introduces 8 papers with results of the exploratory data analysis. Project Appalachia represents an effort to develop and apply methods of combining information and concepts from regional geology, metallogeny and geomathematics for computer- aided regional mineral resource evaluation."

"INTRODUCTIONThe Red Dog Project in Alaska is being developed by Cominco Alaska, a subsidiary of Corninco Ltd. of Canada, and the Nana Regional Corporation, one of the 12 native corporations created by the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of1971.The State of Alaska is also a very key part of the project through its financing of the transportation system for Red Dog. Red Dog will be the third, and largest, of Cominco's Arctic mining developments in the past thirteen years, after the Black Angel Mine in Greenland, which started up in 1973, and the Polaris Mine in the Canadian Arctic, which began production six years ago in 1982.Red Dog is one of the world's great mineral deposits, with a unique combination of large size, high-grade, and a waste-to- ore ratio less than I: I, which will make it the world's largest, and one of the lowest cost zinc producers, when at full production. The present mineral reserve is estimated to be 85 million tons , at a grade of 17.1010 zinc, 5% lead, and 2.4 ounces per ton of silver. Based on the current production forecast, this will give a mine life of almost 50 years, and the deposit is still open in two directions, although the structure is becoming thinner at depth. As well, there is a satellite zone about one mile south of the main deposit which could contain up to another 8 million tons of mineral at Red Dog grades or better. This is not presently included in the reserve due to potential processing difficulties.In relation to other zinc deposits, Red Dog is the second largest ever discovered, smaller than the original Broken Hill deposit in Australia, but larger than Cominco's own Sullivan Mine in British Columbia, which is number three. It is quite possible that, when the area is adequately explored, Red Dog will be number one."

I.-THE HISTORY OF THE SYSTEM TO trace the history of the development of the Co-operative Committee System in The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, one must look backward about twenty years. In 1915 and 1916, the first years of the W ar to really affect Canadian life, there were sixteen hundred men working in the Trail plant. These men were, on the whole, a splendid body of men and pa trio tic to the core. They were almost one hundred percent organized, ninety-five percent of them be-longing to the Union of the Western Federation of Miners. Most of the tradesmen belonged to their craft unions as well. For example, there were ? local machinist, steel workers', electrician, boiler maker, bricklayer, and carpenter unions. The Company had always maintained an open-shop policy and refused to enforce membership in any union, but recognized the right of every man to belong to unions. The only exceptions have been the I.W.W. and the One Big Union. Both of these organizations have always been fought by the Company. By 1916, membership in the Western Federation being practically 100 per cent, the Company recognized this organization's authority to make agreements, and a wage and hour agreement was drawn up and signed by the Company and the local officials of the Union, and ratified and signed by the Head Office of the Union in Denver, Colorado. This agreement was for the duration of the war.

"CASES and mixtures of them are so common and so much a part of everyday existence that they become so taken for granted that their individual characteristics and idiosyncrasies rarely become of curiosity to others than those involved in tl1eir production, processing, treatment, transportation, and for utilization. The use of the most common and universal mixture of gases -air -is begun at birth by ail living creatures and their discontinuation of its use terminates existence. Modern man rides on air in his tires, rides through it for high-speed transportation, and uses it for his comfort in the heating and air conditioning of his domicile. It is neither the aim nor the in-tent, in the next few moments, to provide a panacea for even a portion of the problems inherent in the gas industry nor to delve deeply into any particular facet of its diversities. The purpose is primarily to touch upon some of the peculiarities and generally to consider approaches to employ in the pursuit of solutions."

The renewed interest of the past few years in the Appalachian and Michigan oil provinces has not, as yet, created any marked increase in activity in Southwestern Ontario. During 1960 development drilling in-creased somewhat over 1959, but exploratory drilling decreased slightly. More attention was devoted to the deeper horizons, but lake drilling de-creased considerably. Oil production reached a new peak and gas production increased slightly. During 1960 an interesting oil and gas discovery was made in the Cambrian and gas discoveries six miles off-shore in the eastern part of Lake Erie were made in the Clinton-Cataract zone of the Silurian. This paper reviews activities during 1960, summarizes the discoveries made to-date and the pertinent exploration data relating to the prospects of the region and discusses some of the economic aspects of exploration and development. The base of the biozone of Olenellus is accepted as the most universally applicable criterion for defining the base of the Cambrian System. The use of this definitive criterion is restricted by important practical considerations. In the southeastern Canadian Cordillera this zone appears to truncate the basal ortho-quartzite of a west to east marine -transgression. This transgression began in Interior British Columbia in the Late Proterozoic and terminated in the region of the present Rockies in the Late Waucobian. Most of the material deposited by the transgressing sea originated in the eastern positive element 'Laurentia' and was transported over the intervening low Proterozoic-Windermere erosion surface. The configuration of the advancing shoreline and the distribution of the sediments were controlled by the tectonic activity of positive elements in northwestern Montana (Montania) and in the Fairmont Hot Springs-Radium area of British Columbia.

"A process is described which permits the separate recovery of lead and zinc from complex low-grade sulphide concentrates such as are produced from the New Brunswick type of disseminated pyrite ores. This process calls for the preparation of a lead-zinc bulk concentrate from the original ore by flotation. The bulk concentrate is then oxidized under pressure in autoclaves in aqueous sulphuric acid solution, such as return electrolyte from zinc electrolysis. This yields a zinc sulphate solution and a residue containing lead sulphate, unaltered pyrite and elemental sulphur generated during the oxidation. After the oxidation, the leach slurry is briefly heated to above the melting point of elemental sulphur and then cooled. Thus, pellets containing pyrite and elemental sulphur are formed, and they are separated from the lead sulphate by screening and/or flotation. Laboratory tests have shown that about 95 per cent of the zinc and lead can be separately recovered from complex bulk concentrates. Process possibilities are discussed."
