"Microseismic monitoring technology has become one of the most effective method of mine ground pressure monitoring after decades of development. But safety assessment of mine ground pressure by using microseismic monitoring is still in the development stage, it needs to be perfected continuously in practice, and choose the optimal assessment indexes and methods. The definitions and physical meanings of wave velocity, b value, and EI-VA value are introduced in this paper. Statistical calculation of the microseismic events in Luomu Mine is finished by using these indexes, then the functions and calculation results of V, b value, and EI-VA value with the variable of time are also given in the paper. The preliminary safety assessment method is established in Luomu Mine, and it has achieved good results in practical application.1.1 Engineering background The Luomu Mine is a super large molybdenum and tungsten production base in China, ore reserves is up to 2 billion tons, first in Asia and third in the world. It begins mining since the 1960. and bases on underground mining until 2002. In order to recover resources more effectively, it began to use opencast mining method and formed a production of 30000t/d in the early 1990. After about 30 years of underground mining, a large mined out spaces was formed under open pit mine, up to area of 1.2 million m2 and volume of 18 million m3, as shown in figure 1. The large number of mined out spaces seriously affects the normal production, mining and handling of mined out spaces are in the high risk. In the past years, several rock mass collapsions happened, and it caused a serious security threat to persons and equipments. According to the distribution characteristics of mined out spaces, Luomu Mine is divided into A, B, C, D and E mining area. The stability of D mining area is studied in this article. D mining area mainly includes 1376,1350,1340,1317 mined out spaces and 1280 deep large mined out area, as shown in figure 2. The mined out spaces of D mining area is extremely complex and high-risk. Therefore, a microseismic monitoring system was built to monitor the stability of D mining area, a large number of valuable datum has been obtained, and it has a striking effect (Cheng & Peng, 2013; Peng et al., 2013)."

The Nunavik Nickel project began ramp-up of a new ore body (Expo) in November 2014. This new deposit is significantly more competent than the previous ore type milled (i.e., the plant moved from a feed with a BWI of 12.2 kWh/t to predominantly material with a BWI of 19.6 kWh/t). Despite circuit changes made in advance of the Expo ore ramp-up (grinding media size, mill loading/power draw, and cyclone configuration) the throughput of the plant was bottlenecked at 90% of targeted throughput with multiple stoppages to grind-out the primary mill due to excessive circulating loads. During this time, the secondary milling circuit was under-utilised: therefore the focus for debottlenecking plant production became increasing the product size of primary milling. Given the scope of changes already made to the circuit, it was decided to test the mill in open circuit. The milling changes were modelled using the Molycop Tools package to identify potential problems. In the modelling and plant trial it was apparent that the ball size in the secondary grinding circuit was inadequate, resulting in pebbling. The power draw of the secondary mill was brought up to minimize pebbling and the average ball size was increased. The switch to open circuit primary milling permitted a significant augmentation in plant tonnage. While the overall grinding efficiency decreased using the open circuit configuration, the ability to increase throughput made it the clear operating choice.

It is well known in the robotics community that the ability to determine the position of vehicles in real time is a key enabling technology required for automation, traffic management, and to ensure safety in the presence of multiple vehicles. Because of this, the introduction of global positioning systems (GPS) has had a remarkable impact on the surface mining industry, enabling real-time tracking of mobile assets, improved safety, and production optimization. Unfortunately, satellite-based GPS is not available underground. This paper reports on the preliminary results of a study to develop a robust method for globally consistent mapping of large-scale underground mine environments. We believe that this may additionally become the first step towards the development of a novel underground positioning technology. Presented are preliminary results from data collected at two underground mines using an Atlas Copco ST14 LHD machine.

So far, a large number of algorithms have been developed for the optimization of pit limits, most of which follow deterministic rules. In this paper, a new algorithm is introduced, which follows a probabilistic logic using the Markov chain process. The algorithm is implemented on a transition matrix that corresponds to the 2D conventional economic block model of the mining area. The probability of mining a block is proportional to the desirability it may provide. Applying this algorithm, the probability of mining each block is obtained, and finally, the optimum pit limits are defined as the pit, which provides the highest probability of mining. In order to validate the proposed model, a numerical example is given and the results of the algorithm are compared to those of a dynamic programming algorithm. A 2D analysis of the problem is discussed in this paper. Although dealing with 3D problems requires larger size matrices, the optimization method is the same and the algorithm does not need any smoothing.

"This paper describes novel methods to enhance the flow dynamics of a mechanical flotation cell that can be applied to an existing installation. There are several reasons to alter the flow dynamics. The most common motivation is to improve the metallurgical performance of the cell, for instance, to improve the flotation recovery in particle size ranges that are normally difficult to recover.The flow dynamics enhancements are associated with the geometry of the rotor-stator area and additional features in the tank. The rotor-stator area has been modified to provide more concentrated turbulent kinetic energy or respectively more pumping efficiency with less attrition to the slurry. The tank can be fitted with various geometrical features, aimed to create a desired particle suspension profile. Depending on the targeted particle size range and application, badly selected or designed features can also have a negative effect on the metallurgical results.Besides new flotation equipment, the enhancements can be applied to existing flotation cell installations, thus enabling improvements in the mixing profiles, solids suspension, tank sanding and metallurgical performance of operating flotation circuits. Results of several tests carried out in existing plant operations are presented, concerning both flow variables and metallurgy.The common factor to above-mentioned enhancements is the use of modern computational fluid dynamics tools in the design phase, as well as the validation of the obtained CFD results in laboratory and production scale. Validated variables include mixing profile, power draw and local air hold-up.The paper demonstrates the effects of various flow geometries on the mixing profiles and metallurgical results of existing mechanical flotation cells. It shows how modern computational fluid dynamics analysis can be used to screen and select different approaches before carrying out costly trial-and-error experiments in plant scale."

A complex network approach on a rough fracture is developed. In this manner, some hidden metric spaces (similarity measurements) between apertures profiles are set up and a general evolutionary network in two directions (in parallel and perpendicular to the shear direction) is constructed. Also, an algorithm (COmplex Networks on Apertures: CONA) is proposed in which evolving of a network is accomplished using preferential detachments and attachments of edges (based on a competition and game manner) while the number of nodes is fixed. Also, evolving of clustering coefficients and number of edges display similar patterns as well as are appeared in shear stress, hydraulic conductivity and dilation changes, which can be engaged to estimate shear strength distribution of asperities.

"Greenhouse gas emissions—specifically of carbon dioxide—are a concern in Canada, where industrial sectors such as mining are stringently regulated for carbon release. Cumulative emissions are positively related to fuel consumption, which is controlled by several factors. This study investigates one of these factors: the product of vehicle speed and running surface total resistance (TR; sum of rolling resistance and grade resistance). Results show that TR directly affects fuel consumption and emissions—a relationship that is mathematically predictable. Fuel consumption and emissions, which are principally associated with the durability or deterioration of wearing course materials, were analyzed to aid selection of road construction capping material of low rolling resistance. In the oil sands region in the province of Alberta, ground conditions change seasonally. Therefore, the annual fuel consumption for the same wearing course material was also compared. Les émissions cumulées sont indéniablement en lien avec la consommation de carburant, qui est contrôlée par plusieurs facteurs. Cette étude examine l’un de ces facteurs, à savoir le produit de la vitesse du véhicule et de la résistance totale de la surface de roulement (la résistance totale, ou RT, est la somme de la résistance au roulement et de la résistance due aux rampes). Les résultats montrent que la RT affecte directement la consommation de carburant et les émissions, un lien qui est mathématiquement prévisible. La consommation de carburant et les émissions, qui sont principalement associées à la durabilité ou la détérioration des matériaux composant la couche d’usure, ont été analysées afin de contribuer à la sélection de matériau de recouvrement pour la construction de routes ayant une faible résistance au roulement. Dans la région des sables bitumineux de l’Alberta, les conditions au niveau du sol changent à chaque saison. Ainsi, la consommation annuelle de carburant pour le même matériau composant la couche d’usure a aussi été comparée. Pres-sure on world leaders to quickly reduce their carbon footprint is prevalent, prompting new standards and regulations in various industries, including mining and oil and gas. In 2017, the Government of Alberta implemented a carbon tax. The majority of mining activities in this province are truck-shovel operations, where a large fleet of ultra-class trucks is loaded by shovels. Ultra-class haul trucks, classified as those with a capacity of 218–363 tonnes (t), emit high levels of carbon as they travel to processing entry points and waste dumps as designated by the mine plan and mine dispatcher. "The precursor of In2O3 was prepared by hydrolysis precipitation/hydrothermal method using In(NO3)3 solution as the feed material and ammonium hydroxide as the neutralizing agent. The crystallinity, morphology and particle size of the products were characterized by SEM, XRD, BET and LPSA. The results showed that the hydrolysis product consists of an aggregate of cubic In(OH)3 particles with a short rod morphology. In the hydrothermal process, the structure, morphology and size of the particles changes through the mechanisms of Ostwald ripening and phase transition, respectively. When the hydrothermal temperature was less than 280 ?, the Ostwald ripening process took place, which changed the morphology of the particles from short rods to cuboids through dissolution-recrystallization. When the hydrothermal temperature was higher than 280 ?, the processes of Ostwald ripening and phase transition took place successively. Firstly, the morphology of the particles changed from short rods to cuboids through Ostwald ripening, and then, the phase transition from cubic In(OH)3 to orthorhombic InOOH occurred and the morphology of the particles changed from cuboids to polyhedron. INTRODUCTIONDue to its excellent electrical conductivity and optical transparency, indium tin oxide (ITO) film has been wildly used in flat-panel display, solar cell, antistatic coating and EMI shielding (Medvedovski et al., 2008). Indium oxide powder is one of the fundamental materials for preparing ITO film. Along with the development of ITO targets of both high density and large size, high quality indium oxide powders, such as single phase, nano-size, spherical morphology and mono-disperse, have been in high demand (Nakashima and Kumahara, 2002; Betz et al., 2006; Kim et al., 2007). The main preparation methods for indium tin oxide or indium oxide powders include chemical precipitation (Nam et al., 2001; Xu and Yu, 2007), melt atomizing-combustion (Chen et al., 2000) and spray pyrolysis (Ogi et al., 2009). Among them, chemical precipitation has been preferred, since it is simple, easy to control and suitable for industrial scale-up. In chemical precipitation method, indium oxide powders were prepared through the following steps: firstly, indium hydrate precursor was precipitated from an indium salt solution by neutralization using an alkali, such as ammonia; and then, indium oxide (In2O3) powders can be obtained from the precursor through calcination (Li et al., 2006), or solvothermal method (Lee and Choi, 2005), or hydrothermal processing/roasting (Xu et al., 2005; Chen and Li, 2007), respectively. However, the indium oxide powders obtained by direct roasting are polycrystalline, dispersable with a wide size distribution (Liao, 2006). The disadvantages of the solvothermal method are high cost, complicated after-treatment processes, as well as bad performances of the powders (Udawatte and Yanagisawa, 2000). Therefore, among three methods of obtaining indium oxide from the hydrolysis precursor, the hydrothermal process/roasting method is the most feasible to synthesize high quality In2O3 powder with uniform crystallinity and size (Kim et al., 2002; Zhu et al., 2004; Xu et al., 2005; Xu et al., 2005; Chen and Li, 2007; Seetha et al., 2009). However, current research on hydrothermal process-roasting method has been limited to the synthesis of a certain ITO or In2O3 powders under specific conditions. A systematic study on the phase transition, as well as the change of the morphology and size of the particles in the hydrothermal process is still missing. In this paper, the effects of hydrothermal processing on the mineralogy, morphology and size of products were investigated. The results showed that the evolution of crystal structure, morphology and size in the hydrothermal process was affected through the mechanisms of Ostwald ripening and phase transition successively. These results are novel and have guidance for improving the hydrothermal process for In2O3"

The Kemess Mine tailings impoundment is retained behind an earthfill and rockfill dam that, when complete, will measure about 140 m in height with a crest length in excess of 1 km. Due to weak foundation conditions, the dam must be raised at a very flat downstream slope approaching 7H:1V. This requires an enormous volume of fill to construct the downstream shell of the dam, which has a low permeability clayey till core and is raised via the centerline construction method. For the initial years of annual dam raising, from 1996 through 2002, the downstream shell of the dam was constructed with non acid generating waste rock from the open pit, 7 km distant and requiring an uphill haul with obvious cost implications. To reduce costs, and to reduce waste haulage constraints on mining schedules, feasibility studies were initiated for raising of the downstream shell using cycloned tailings sand as opposed to open pit waste. This required inclusion of flotation cells for removal of residual sulphides from the tailings to produce the non acid generating product mandated for the downstream shell of the dam. These studies were positive, and cycloned sand construction was initiated in December of 2002. This paper describes the experience gained with cycloned sand construction for the dam. Unique aspects include environmental controls given the sulphide-bearing ores, preparation of the existing shell of the dam for subsequent placement of hydraulically placed cycloned tailings sand, on-dam settling ponds, water management issues, reclamation of the sand dam for erosion control commensurate with the wet climate, and use of the system to construct an above-water beach of non acid generating tailings to increase the closure security of the structure. A particularly unique aspect of the Kemess experience is hydraulic fill operations extending throughout the coldest winter months, as compared to other operations where such placement has traditionally been considered non-viable through the winter months

"It is extremely difficult for a mine's central control room operator to control peakpower demands and to maintain normal materials handling operations at the same time. An investigation of the Falconbridge Strathcona Mine 's central control room has revealed that there are more than eight thousand possible combinations of ""situations"" that can arise. For such a circumstance, an expert system can become a very valuable tool to assist the operator in taking the most appropriate and timely action.A forward chaining expert system module has been developed for this application. The demand is the peak kilowatt level that the consumer has required during a monthly period. It is not uncommon for the demand portion to be as much as one third of the monthly bill. Energy consumption is the total kilowatt-hour s (kWh) consumed during the period.Ways to reduce the energy consumption part of the electrical bill involve utilizing energy-efficient equipment and operating machines in off-peak hours when a lower energy rate is charged. Maintaining the peak power below a critical level may require that simultaneous usage of major pieces of equipment be avoided. A 3000 kW skip run at an inopportune time could cost a company an extra $30,000 in that month's power cost.Potential disadvantages associated with peak power control are lost production due to work stoppage and increased operating costs due to the need to employ extra personnel. Most companies find these matters relatively easy to deal with and with incentives provided by Ontario Hydro, actively pursue this facet of energy savings (Harju , 1991)."

Introduction Following the discovery of high-grade deposits of pitchblende in the Great Bear Lake area of the Northwest Territories by Mr. Gilbert LaBine in May, 1930, samples were submitted to the Mines Branch for examination and investigation as to suitable methods of treatment (1). The purpose of this paper is to present, briefly, the results of the investigative work conducted on the ores and an outline of the methods developed for the extraction of the radium content and recovery of the by-products. The paper is presented in two parts. Part I gives a review of the history of radium production and of the principal processes used in other countries. Part II describes the work and gives the results of the Mines Branch investigation. Part 1-Radium Production In Other Countries Historical Outline Uranium was discovered in 1789, and more than a century later Madame Curie, while studying the physical properties of this element, observed that the ore of uranium exhibited greater activity than the pure uranium com-pounds she had prepared and traced the cause to the presence of a new element which she named radium. Eventually, research proved radium to be a disintegration product of uranium, and always present in uranium ores.

"The Quebrada Blanca Copper Mine is an open pit copper project located at 4200 m elevation in the Chilean Andes. The deposit is a world-class supergene enriched porphyry with a mining reserve of 89 Mt of 1.3% copper. The supergene zone will produce 6.3 Mt of ore per year for more than 15 years to produce 75 000 t of cathode copper per year.This paper will review the project geology the computer model ling of the deposit, the mine planning process and the property production scheduling. With copper production .fixed by the onsite electrowinning capacity, the planning and scheduling aspects to optimize the project NPV will be discussed. Some of the logistics, equipment. personnel and process difficulties of operating a mine at 42()() m elevation will also be described. IntroductionProject DescriptionThe Quebrada Blanca Copper Mine is an open pit copper project located in the northern part of the Chilean Andes. The project is based on the supergene enriched portion of a porphyry deposit which has a mining reserve of 89 million tonnes at 1.3070 copper. Below the enrichment blanket, the protore represents a further resource.All ore will be leached, the higher grade material will be crushed and stacked for thin layer heap leaching, and the lower grade and oxide material will be dump leached as run-of-mine material. Solvent extraction and electrowinning will be used to produce 75 000 tonnes of cathode copper per year. Power will be supplied by a 40 MW on-site diesel generating plant with the waste heat being used for process heating. The leaching operation will operate in excess of 15 years and may be followed by open pit mining and conventional ore concentration of the underlying primary sulphide mineralization.Because of the dry location water will be piped 37 km from a ground water source at the Salar de Michincha. Water requirements will be approximately 1.5 million m3/year. The operation will eventually employ approximately 550 people on a 7-day-on, 7-day-off rotation with two twelve-hour shifts per day with an on-site camp. Busing will be provided to the port city of Iquique."

The research and characterisation for compositional, physicochemical, structural, electrical and flotation properties of various pyrite samples for a copper-zinc sulfide ore was carried out. Various methods were used during the research, such as optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, electron probe micro-analysis (EPMA), phase emission analysis, routine chemical analysis, auger electron spectroscopy (AES), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), back-scattered electron images (BSE), potentiometry, and instrumental neutron-activation analysis, flotation. Analysis of obtained results established the interrelation between impurity structures and concentration of electric charge carriers in minerals, Butyl xanthate sorption and flotation yield of pyrite. The research concluded that pyrite samples differ by morphology, micro defects of structure, concentration of donor and acceptor impurities (Co, As, Sb, etc.) and conductivity parameters (thermo-electrical force, specific resistance and concentration of charge carriers The peculiarity of pentagon-dodecahedral pyrite is the high concentration of electric charge carriers (electrons) and the more negative surface potential (by 25–75 mV) in comparison to cubic pyrite. The surface of cubic varieties is more active, therefore it is oxidized in alkaline lime medium much faster, than the surface of pentagon-dodecahedral varieties. This phenomenon is caused by high reaction ability, irregular jointing and defects of cubic pyrite. This promotes the increase of calcium ion sorption on its surface and the decrease of Butyl xanthate sorption. According to this, an increase in alkalinity (lime medium) from a pH of 10.0–11.5 leads to an increase of gold content reporting to the tail of bulk flotation. Gold content is increased from 0.58 g/t (?? 9.5) to 1.9 g/t (?? 11.6), which represents an increase in gold recovery of 24.68 to 79%, respectively.

Open pit mine management must ensure that sufficient trucks are available and are being used effectively for production, and that operating costs are under continued control and review for improvements. This paper describes methods for estimating truck fleet requirements which have been used effectively at large- and medium-sized open pit mining operations. Applied to commonly available data, multiple regression analyses can indicate when mine plans should be revised toward optimizing the number of trucks required. Prediction of major cost items for budgetary purposes is addressed, along with an example of how readily available production data can be used to reduce costs systematically.

"Refratechnik, a leading German refractory company, acquired a majority shareholding in Baymag in 1979. This acquisition included the mining rights for a magnesite deposit of exceptionally high purity in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.The deposit, situated in the Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia, is of Cambrian age and has ore reserves of 50 million m. t. of magnesite. The Baymag magnesite deposit is one of the purest in the world. The deposit was opened up and mining commenced in early 1982. Production of various caustic calcined magnesia products in a rotary kiln operation in Exshaw, Alberta, was started in mid-1982. The product application ranges from pulp and paper production, to the chemical industry, and to animal feed supplements. Since the end of 1983, Baymag has produced high-quality refractory grade fused magnesium oxide f or specialty applications in the steel industry.IntroductionAlthough magnesium is the eighth most abundant element in the earth and forms about 2.06% of the earth's crust, common knowledge about magnesium and especially magnesium oxide (MgO) as an industrial mineral is not widespread. The reason might be that, with the exception of magnesium metal as the element, magnesia products are not generally sold as final products to end-users, but rather are needed for the production of final products such as steel, cement, paper, etc. Therefore, some general comments are given about the different sources of MgO, the different products, world production and consumption , before Baymag specifics are addressed. Magnesium metal will not be discussed in this paper."

"I wish to thank you and your organizers for inviting me to address you at this point in time when we are all concerned for the future of the mineral industry in Canada.My topic ""Some Initiatives of Government Assistance to Industry Applicable to Mineral Processing"" is purposely limited in scope. To cover the entire range of initiatives in detail would take me all day, and at best, would be a mere recital of program titles, and a one sentence summary of the contents of the program. As you know, OREE or Regional Economic Expansion, is in the process of being amalgamated with elements of the Department of Industry, Trade and Commerce. We will become Regional Industrial Expansion or ORIE. If the name Canada Dry becomes popular, I don't think we will object as we hope to become a good mixer. The entire departmental thrust has been re-evaluated, and is in the process of being re-constituted to better serve the nation, and industry as a whole. Amalgamation of the industrial, trade promotion and marketing support skills of IT&C, with the regional development orientation and decentralization program delivery mechanisms of DREE, will, it is believed, provide better support to industry on a national and regional basis."
