Exploration requires substantial capital, and is an extremely risky business (only 1 in 100 prospects ever becomes a mine). The average lead time, that is the time between discovery and production, varies from around two years for a gold mine, to 15 years for a lead/zinc mine. Since it takes years to find, prove and develop most ore bodies, exploration must be carried out years ahead of the depletion of existing deposits. Investors in exploration are exposed to risk for long periods before knowing whether they will receive a return on the funds invested. The risk, high-cost, uncertainty and long lead times involved in exploration make it an aspect of commerce that most managers and investors find difficult to rationalise or understand. Nevertheless, it is a given that the long-term survival of the mining sector depends on discovery of new mineral deposits, however the immediacy of the need to find or acquire new mineral deposits in order to compete and prosper in the industry is less well understood. This paper examines the commercial realities which underlie exploration for new mineral deposits. The first and foremost reason for exploration is to maintain or increase depleting ore reserves which are the asset base of mining, but there are other compelling commercial reasons for exploring, and these are: to maintain return on investment, to achieve growth or create wealth through discoveries which lead tonew mining ventures, to remain competitive in the industry, to diversify, and to control raw material source for mineral processing and/ormarketing ventures. Exploration is necessary for survival of the industry, and also for survival of organisations competing in the industry. The organisations which discover the best orebodies are in the best position to compete, and mining organisations which fail to find or acquire new mineral deposits rapidly become uncompetitive and unable to maintain return on shareholdersÆ investment.

"Booster fans are relatively rare in Australian coal mines. However, as mines become progressivelydeeper it is likely that such fans will be increasingly adopted as a method to sustain or improve the ventilation of underground workings. The reasons why booster fans may be an att ractive alternative include: increased cost of sinking additional ventilation shafts with greater seam depths; environmental objections to shaft sinking projects; and increasing urbanisation and surface constraints limiting availability of potential ventilation shaft sites. As Tahmoor Colliery movedinto its northern lease the ventilation constraints became the limiting factor on production. Thelimitations of the old workings meant that the existing ventilation system would be inadequateto sustain the required production. Extensive ventilation modelling was carried out to evaluatevarious potential solutions and the recommended option was the installation of a booster fanor fans, to gain underground access to an already approved shaft site in the northern lease.Proposals were sought from recognised fan manufacturers and various alternative arrangements were tendered. Ultimately the choice was between one large centrifugal fan and a set (three or four) of smaller æauxiliary-likeÆ fans in parallel. The successful tender was for a single centrifugal, an arrangement very similar to the booster fans that have been operating eff ectively at Westcliff Colliery for a number of years. Australia is a leading producer of mineral sands and according to U.S. Bureau of Mines, produced 24, 53 and 64% of world's production of ilmenite, rutile and zircon respectively in 1983. The industry which is mainly export oriented earned in export income about $210 million in 1985. The dominant position which Australia occupies in world produc- tion of mineral sands is also maintained in many areas of research and development work on the processing and application of these minerals. Some of this research which is leading the world has been responsible for setting up industries to produce value-added and high-tech products such as synthetic rutile and partially stabilized zirconia (PSZ). The production of high purity zirconia is due to commence shortly while research in rare earths offers an exciting prospect for future Developments.

Supplementary sampling of particulate mass concentration, the number concentration and the average particle diameter of nanoparticles using a TSI Dust-Trak DRX Aerosol Monitor, Naneos Partector 2 has been conducted. The aim of this study was to evaluate suitability of the instrument for long-term monitoring of diesel particulate matter (DPM) at conditions of polymetallic mines. Sampling was conducted in an area of the active ore heading, requiring the use of a diesel-powered face haul-age loader R1700 and a mine truck Caterpillar AD-45. The sampling was done for 126 minutes at a distance of 30 metres from the mine face. Results of this field work can be used to expand the sampling program to other mines. Expected outcomes of this study are to develop costeffective DPM control strategies, improve mine ventilation, and protect mineworkers’ health.

China has been producing gold for more than 4000 years with gold production increasing substantially since the 1980s, from about 25 tonnes in 1980 to some 160 tonnes in 1998. More than 80 per cent of the gold production is from East China. However, complete information on eastern China gold has been rarely reported internationally. This is a general overview on the tectonics and metallogeny of gold deposits in East China. The geology of these gold deposits is compiled mainly from data and information reported in China, and is also based on the authorÆs work in China from 1974 to 1986 and a recent visit to China.

The paper introduces a newly developed multi-function test rig for fracture grouting. This test rig has many functions and its performance is consistent. It can control and adjust accurately the opening degree of fissures and static pres- sure; it can measure automatically the quantity of grout injected; it can measure precisely pressure drop of grout in fissures; it can test the results of injection, including effective dispersed distance, anti-filtration capacity of consolidated body, mechanical strength, etc. It can inject a single or two grouts into one or several fissures at a pressure of 16 MPa. Therefore, it is an ideal test rig for fracture injection. The paper depicts all the components of the test rig, its performance and application of the results obtained from fracture grouting tests. Examples are briefly described.

The procedure used for Truck Maintenance is described systematically in this paper. Emphasis is given to manpower required, work facilities, daily maintenance and oil sampling procedure. Scheduled Preventative Maintenance Service, Electrical Service, Component Change, Truck Overhaul and Outside Contractors are also discussed. The system used, achieves the required results with an average haul truck availability in 1981 of 87.9 per cent. INTRODUCTION Situated on the Island of Bougainville, in Papua New Guinea, the Bougainville Copper mine nestles in a valley near the crest of the Crown Prince Range, between 600 m and 980 m above sea level. The mine is serviced by two towns, Arawa - an open town on the Coast and Panguna at the Mine Site. Currently Bougainville Copper operates an open pit mine removing an average of 198 000 dry metric tonnes of material per day (115 000 tonnes ore and 83 000 tonnes of waste) with a fleet of electric shovels and 154 tonne electric haul trucks.

The first introduction of automatic control systems for flotation occurred about fifteen years ago. The early control work coincided with the introduction of on-line assaying using XRF techniques. This OSA availability, coupled with the emergence of small digital computers suitable for process control in the late 1960-s, meant that the necessary process information and control hardware existed for flotation control experiments. A period of intensive research related to flotation control. ensued. A great deal of effort was devoted to the development of mathematical models of flotation. Plant experimentation sought to understand the effects of a range of flotation variables on the process. Finally, control loops were proposed and plant tested. An evolutionary pattern emerges when the range of flotation control installations is examined. The earliest systems had as objectives process stabilisation using reagent control. There were also some early attempts at flotation optimisation procedures, again using reagent variation. Current work is still associated with the same objectives. One of the difficulties with flotation control has been to recognise and define clear and precise control objectives. More emphasis is now placed on cleaner control which has the advantage that the objectives are usually well defined. A number of flotation control systems which cover a range of control system types is discussed. Based on this accumulated experience,a list of good and bad practice in flotation control is Proposed.

æMining + Health in DevelopmentÆ is a project funded by the International Mining for Development Centre (IM4DC, 2012) to develop a centralised database of corporate sustainability initiatives for managing and improving occupational and public health, based on information extracted from social and environmental reports of major mining, oil and gas (MOG) companies. This register of materials has the potential to increase stakeholder awareness of the unique health risks impacting the minerals industry, employees, their families and surrounding communities, as well as to inform stakeholders on global industry approaches to health management.Data and preliminary outcomes from analysis of different MOG corporate sustainability reports on public health and disease management are presented for six African countries (Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Mozambique, Sudan, Tanzania and Zimbabwe) and six Asia-Pacific countries (Indonesia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Philippines and Vietnam).With the minerals industry facing ongoing rapid growth worldwide, including continuous expansion into developing regions, the æMining+Health in DevelopmentÆ project will inform industry, civil society and regulators of current health management practices and programming among the different sectors of the minerals, oil and gas industries and across various regional operations. Mexican epithermal deposits can be broadly grouped into two types based on their contained metals, distribution, associated igneous rocks and fluid inclusion compositions. Silver-gold deposits (e.g. Tayoltita) mostly occur in the western part of northern Mexico where host rocks consist of Eocene, intermediate composition volcanic and intrusive rocks; fluid inclusion studies indicate that mineralizing fluids were _10 eq. wt. % NaCl). The distribution of these two deposit types, crosscutting major major crustal sutures, and the close spatial-temporal relationships between mineralization and magmatism, together suggest that magmatic processes were more important in the formation of mineralizing solutions, as a source of both ligands and metals, than the segments of crust hosting deposits.

Gas drainage has been practiced for many years mainly for safety reasons in various countries in Europe, in the U.S.A., the U.K. and Japan. Legislation has been developed to control the production, transport- ation and utilisation of methane and associated gases. Gas drainage is now being carried out at some Australian Collieries, but as this is a new venture little specific legislation is available. This paper briefly describes the drainage methods and legislation applied overseas, gives a brief history of gas drainage in N.S.W. and indicates the deficiencies of the present legislation. It outlines the approach to new legislation which will deal comprehensively with gas drainage operations and utilisation in New South Wales.

Two recently published studies have considered whether and how robots, which have been designed for manufacturing applications, could find use in mining. The conclusions of both studies, if not identical, are compatible. Automation of mining activities will continue. Robots, at least in the short term, will have little application in mining. However, robotic concepts, both hardware and software, are of considerable relevance to mining automation, and can be anticipated to diffuse gradually into mine environments. The present paper is intended to convey the current state of thought on this subject to IFAC Symposium participants who may be unfamiliar with the referenced studies, and is not intended to report previously unpublished research.

The studies of pulp electrochemical flotation separation of pyrite and arsenopyrite were made from the thermodynamics, mineral natural oxidation rate, property of mineral surface oxidised material and pulp electrochemical flotation tests. The results showed that although pyrite and arsenopyrite possessed similar thermodynamic stability, significant differences of two minerals were observed in natural oxidation rate, property of surface oxidised material and its influence to dixanthogen formation on the oxidised mineral surface. Based on the non-thermodynamic differences, the pulp electrochemical flotation technology was successfully used to separate arsenopyrite from pyrite in pilot test.

Capital expenditure on sampling and blending is often very difficult to justify. The costs are easy to estimate but the benefits likely to be obtained by constructing good sampling and blending facilities are generally difficult to estimate. For instance, improving blending of the ore feed to a smelter would improve throughput, yield and controllability ... but by how much? Similarly, better sampling would allow processing conditions to be dynamically adjusted and would improve extraction ... but by how much? Predicting benefits often requires the use of simulation models which carefully distinguish between true grades, predicted grades and observed grades. The parameters of these simulation models must often be estimated from rather inadequate information. These difficulties are illustrated using three scenarios.

The karst water system in Han-Xing District is charaterised by heterogeneity in karstification and permeability of the limestone aquifer, unsteady flowing of the groundwater along karst runoff zone system, periodic recharge related with the periodic precipitation, and concentrative discharge of the groundwater in the form of karstic spring groups. The basic law is that the quantity of the water is very large during waterflood period and rather small in dry period, which has brought about difficulties and contradictions in mining and water supply. The measure to bring the karst water under control must be based on the principle of comprehensive ways and on the systems engineering method. Macroscopiclly, it is the reasonable countermeasure to retain surface water in the upstream section of the karst water system and to strengthen infiltration in the midstream section and to combine exploitation and utilization of the groundwater with water protection and mine dewatering in the area in which mines are distributed.

Hard rock TBMs are very often open machine layouts, with just a part roof shield over the front of the machine. The whole system is designed for fast face advance and the economy of the project often depends entirely on the rate of advance. Typically, hard rock conditions will demonstrate stable and good ground for a major part of the tunnel. However, short sections of crushed shear zones with clay and gouge material may cause serious time delays. Spiling rock bolting has been proven to be very efficient under such circumstances, provided the fully grouted rebar bolts can be placed in a controlled and practical manner.Environmental restrictions are becoming more and more a part of tunnel excavation projects. Even hard rock TBM tunnelling may require a strict ground water control, because of consequences on the ground surface from lowering the ground water level. Such consequences may be surface settlement, negative influence on ground water resources or damage to vegetation.Pressure injection ahead of the advancing tunnel face (in this paper named pre-injection), using microfine cement and chemical grouts, is today a proven technology. As examples can be mentioned (Garshol, 1997) about 100 km of pre-injected tunnels below Oslo City and about the same length of subsea tunnelling elsewhere in Norway. Examples from other parts of the world are also available, like below Stockholm, Sweden, the Inland Feeder project and Hollywood Metro both in Southern California.To take advantage of spiling rockbolts and pre-injection, it is an obvious prerequisite to be able to drill the necessary boreholes in the right positions and at the correct angle. In drill and blast excavation this is simple, but in TBM projects it has repeatedly turned out to be difficult. More than once owners have accepted bids containing reassurance from the contractor that the drilling method will be sorted out later. Experience shows that if ælaterÆ means after start of the TBM operation, it is often too late.

Agglomeration Drum Selection and Design A model has been developed by for drum agglomeration which allows selection of geometry and power input. Specific aspects considered are: calculation of total operating volume, solids residence time based on drum geometry and operating parameters, selection of the drum aspect ratio, selection of proportion of critical speed, calculation of rotating power requirements. The model uses solids total residence time to calculate the required operating volume. The burden density is calculated from the solids bulk density, agglomerate packing and the fluid density. Power is calculated using a modified Liddell and Moys correlation for burden position and shape, and the operating drum speed. A further power allowance is made to allow for accretion drop off during drum rotation. Results from the model (especially power and per cent operating fill) have been verified from industrial installations of significant size. Predicted and observed power draws are within five per cent when burden slip and bypassing are not significant. When these are significant (at fills above 15 per cent) the actual power draw will be less than the model prediction. Under these circumstances the quality of the agglomerates will be poor.
