The dispersion pattern of heavy metals in soil and water is a consequence of complex geophysical and geochemical processes. Metal release from mining sites and subsequent migration occur primarily through acid mine drainage and erosion of waste and tailings dumps. Water plays a significant role in heavy metal mobilisation. Whilst it acts as a storage buffer for the pollutants, it is also the medium in which most of the reactions take place, and is undoubtedly the most significant transport vector in the pollution process. The intrinsic properties of the acidic drainage such as chemical composition, speciation of key mineral components, redox potential and pH are master variables controlling metal release, transport, deposition, reactivity and availability to biota. The mobility of heavy metals is strongly increased by acidification from acid mine drainage, and the discharge of these metals into the receiving waters results in numerous physical, chemical and biological responses in which the environment can affect the metal and vice versa. The result is an overwhelming number of association/dissociation, substitution, adsorption/desorption reactions, giving rise to a complex migration pattern. The attempt to understand and describe the dispersion pattern of heavy metals is complicated by the nature and level of interaction between the geochemical and hydrodynamic processes that generate and control the movement of the pollutants in the geosphere. Transport models which can be used to predict the behaviour of metal pollutants in a natural environment are still in the initial phases of development and their application to real life situations is limited. The Biochemical Cycle adds another dimension to the mobility of heavy metals. Metals form an important component of the food chain for man and plants. Biological uptake of metals from the bedrock and soil by organisms can result in migration paths very difficult to follow. Biodegradation or assimilation is just a tip of the iceberg.

Estimation of in-situ resources and recoverable ore reserves for the Boddington Gold Mine feasibility study was done by applying an essentially "classical" ore reserve method. This relied completely on customized graphics-based computer software requiring close co-operation and interaction between geologists and mining engineers. All geological and mining outlines were interpreted and digitized manually. Classification of selectively mineable reserves into ore, marginal and waste categories was done using a method involving convolution, devised by Dr S Carras of the Systems Research Institute of Australia, and Mr R Hooper of Kinhill Stearns. The estimation process was complicated by the frequently conflicting requirements of the various joint venture partners. The resulting ore reserve figures therefore satisfied only the most general expectations of each partner.

As part of a long-term acid rock drainage (ARD) mitigation study, PT Freeport Indonesia has completed the construction of a highly instrumented, full-scale, experimental, overburden stockpile to further evaluate the behaviour of the waste rock system at Grasberg mine. A total of 24 lysimeters, 30 sets of thermistor strings and 48 oxygen-sampling ports were installed at select locations during stockpile construction. ARD flow rates and chemistry have been recorded since the start of overburden rock placement in April 2000. Measurements of in situ temperatures and oxygen concentrations quantify reaction rates and the oxygen pathways that control oxidation kinetics deep within the waste rock profile. Direct field observations show the significance of advective oxygen flow with respect to the onset of oxidation kinetics. Oxygen measurements show that the rubble zone that forms at the base of a waste rock bench provides a critical pathway for oxygen entry to the waste rock profile. Furthermore, rapid oxidation as evidenced by measured temperature increases deep within the panels of waste rock is observed to occur. The observations presented in this paper provide critical insight for understanding the mechanisms and behaviour of full-scale waste rock stockpiles with respect to ARD generation. The results of this program will assist in the future selection, testing and evaluation of appropriate mitigation measures with respect to surface and face treatments to reduce long-term ARD generation. This project is a work in progress, and at least another two-years will be required to fully understand site-specific ARD generation and ARD mitigation mechanisms. This paper will discuss various design and construction considerations, provide an overview of results achieved to date, and some preliminary interpretation of what is happening within the overburden stockpiles.

The most critical step in the development of any mining project is the completion of a feasibility study. The feasibility study has one primary goal; to demonstrate that the project is economically viable if it is designed, constructed and operated in accordance with the concepts set forth in the study. Starting from a mineral resource data base, the feasibility study will define the ore reserves, the mining methods, the mineral processing concepts and the scale of the project. The disciplined activity of developing a feasibility study leads the proponent to examine every aspect of the project, many of which might otherwise be ignored. All technical concepts will be established and the corporate philosophy with respect to organisational structure, social and environmental responsibility, infrastructure contributions and financing will be determined. All the major decisions about how the project will be developed are made during the feasibility study. The success of the project will then depend upon the assumptions and decisions in the feasibility study and the ability and empowerment of the development team.

The application and development of monitoring and control techniques of coal mines in China is mainly described in the paper.The techniques of mine control and monitoring system have been developed as an important means of production dispatch, command and management with ever-increasing coal production and gradual raising of the level of mechanization and centralization of continuous mining. The continuous stage monitoring and control system in China coal mines has been developed from the initial single fixed plant monitoring, and the technique of computers has also been applied in the system for productive and environmental monitoring, featuring a new type of mine control and monitoring equipment of China.

Magmatism is of first order significance in the extension process. Continental extension is terminated when sea-floor spreading commences, but sea-floor spreading will not commence if magmas do not begin to arrive in sufficient volumes. In the oceanic lithosphere, the rate of magma supply may determine whether sea-floor spreading takes place, or lithospheric extension as the result of normal fault arrays. In continental crust thickened as the result of previous compressional orogeny, the availability of magma may determine a completely different process. The author has examined metamorphic core complexes in a number of tectonic environments, in the North American Cordillera, in the Aegean Sea, Greece, and in the Solomon Sea, Papua and New Guinea. What these terrains have in common is a major collisional orogeny predating a major extensional event. The "roll back" of the lithospheric flexure associated with subduction can be seen as the "driving force" for extension in two of these cases. Metamorphic core complexes in these environments are characterized by domal exposures of crustal scale ductile shear zones, underneath which massive plutonic complexes have been formed. Emplacement of these plutons is associated with anatexis of the surrounding rocks. Migmatite complexes are well developed in the Aegean and Solomon Sea core complexes, and in some core complexes in the Basin and Range. Chains of core complexes can be explained as the result of basaltic and andesitic magmas derived from a linear belt of relatively hot rising asthenosphere, in a zone of attempted continental "break up". It is argued that core complexes are the results of magmas derived from relatively short lived mantle "hot spots" impingeing on extending continental crust which has been overthickened during previous compressional orogeny.

Perseverance Mine is a part of Leinster Nickel Operation (LNO), a fully owned division of Western Mining Corporation (WMC). The town of Leinster is located 370 kilometres north west of Kalgoorlie. LNO operates an underground gold mine and mill at Agnew, 30 kilometres west of the town in addition to two nickel mines and a mill 15 kilometres east of Leinster. Both the Perseverance and Rocky's Reward nickel orebodies are mined by open pit and underground methods.The Perseverance orebody was discovered in the early-1970s. Decline development commenced in 1977 and the first ore was milled in 1978. The shaft sink started in 1979. The shaft was comissioned in 1983, four years after sinking commenced. The mine was placed on care and maintenance in 1986 and purchased in January 1989 by WMC.

Drilling and shooting techniques at Moura open-cut have evolved over a period of 16 years and are the result of hard earned experience combined with established practices and consul- tation with professional services. The wide range of overburden types encoun- ted in the field requires varying methods to achieve the best results at all times. Safe working conditions for the employees and protection of mining equipment is of para- mount importance and close liaison is maintain- ed with the Department of Mines Queensland to keep abreast with changing legislation. Drill patterns, charging profiles, types of explosives and ultimate results are des- cribed in detail along with a resume of equip- ment. Costs of drilling, labour and explosives are also analysed with a total of approximately 20c per cubic metre of shot ground. Future developments and improvements to facilities are also outlined.

Two methods of calibrating the parameters K and Alpha for use in Gy’s formula for the fundamental sampling error were investigated. Approximately 480 kg of broken ore from Harmony’s Target gold mine in South Africa was used to compile the replicate samples for two experiments. The duplicate series analysis (DSA) and segregation free analysis (SFA) methods differ in terms of their approach to recovering the sized materials required for the calibration procedure. In this experiment the DSA method split off six more-or-less equal masses of material from a 75 kg lot that was successively crushed to finer and finer fragment sizes. The sublots so formed were split into 32 samples and fire assayed for gold. The SFA method used approximately 250 kg of broken ore crushed to 95 per cent passing 2.50 cm, which was then passed through successively finer screens until a sublot of less than 0.0075 cm was obtained. Each of the 15 sublots obtained in this way were split using a riffle splitter into 32 samples that were fire assayed. A total of 672 fire assays were used in these experiments. The sampling parameters K and Alpha were used for the compilation of a nomogram and to calculate the gold liberation size of the ores. While there are no definitive results in terms of the actual gold grain sizes against which the calculated sizes can be compared, it appears that the DSA method produces more acceptable results.CITATION:Minnitt, R, 2014. The Warner Process has been devised to produce zinc metal directly from sulphide, thereby reducing the requirements for purchase of large amounts of energy in a special form. The process conditions for a practical process have been evaluated in an extensive program of research and development at the University of Birmingham. Recorded data now exists to take the process forward to commercial use within the next five years. The industrial economics have been evaluated. The cost of making zinc metal from zinc sulphide ore can be substantially lowered due to the reduced energy cost, locating zinc production in the neighbourhood of the mines and increasing ore to metal recoveries - particularly for fine-grained and pyritic ore. Integration of a Warner Furnace with a zinc mine and concentrator can result in a highly attractive return on capital Invested.

A number of small copper deposits occur in the Pernatty Lagoon-Mt. Gunson area. Textural and mineralogical differences distinguished the lagoon sulphide deposits, which occur in a water filled basin of permeable bedrock immediately under the lagoon floor, from the largely oxidized deposits which occur in the low hills adjacent to the lagoon deposits.Groundwaters are carrying copper, and to a lesser extent zinc, downstream to the lagoon. Several species of sulphate-reducing bacteria are widespread in the groundwaters and lagoon muds.It is suggested that copper sulphides were first deposited at the same time as, or soon after, the host Proterozoic sediments, and that during the present cycle of erosion the lagoon deposits may have been enriched, or largely formed, by bacterial precipitation of copper sulphides from laterally migrating cupriferous groundwaters.

At some time in the mining life of an open cut coal deposit, consideration is usually given to determine the point at which underground mining becomes an economic proposition or even necessary. This can occur anywhere from the pre-feasibility project stage to decades after commencement of mining. Options which can be considered include the extension of the life of the open cut by use of larger equipment, the utilisation of highwall mining techniques and the introduction of low capital start-up or full underground development. The primary focus is always the minimisation of the total unit cost (including capital )of clean product. The transition point at which an undergound mining operation becomes more economic than an open cut operation is not a simple evaluation and depends on many factors, particularly on the nature of the deposit itself. The main general determining factors of the transition point are related to the three factors of mining resource, the mining method that can be used and mining cost issues. Mining resource issues include geography, geotechnics, strip ratio, geology and the size of the deposit. Mining method issues include highwall mining, extending the life of an open cut, the environment, available roof support technology, product yields and the availability of appropriate workforces. The mining cost factors discussed include capital and operating costs and the impact of productivity and management. All these factors impact to a varying extent on the transition point.

A dynamic model of a dense medium circuit has been developed and tested against plant data. The model shows the response of the circuit to both controlled (changes in specific gravity set point or changes in circuit coal feed rate) and uncontrolled changes (changes in raw coal moisture, loss of raw coal feed) in operating conditions. The model is built up from dynamic models of the individual sumps, pumps, pipes, splitters, magnetic separators and automatic controllers in the circuit. The model can be used for design of automatic control loops and for investigation of possible process modifications such as changes in water addition points. This paper describes the model construction, the testing of the model against actual plant data and gives some examples of its use in investigating plant response to changes in operating conditions.

The energy consumption for producing metal from ore is strongly linked to the chemical stability of mineral being processed, availability and richness of the ore, and process route. Energy efficiencies are particularly linked to the process route. The energy efficiency of high temperature operations vary considerably but energy efficiencies greater than 70 per cent are achieved for large-scale metal production. Low temperature processing through grinding, leaching and subsequent electrowinning use large amounts of energy. In particular, grinding and electrowinning suffer from low overall energy efficiencies. The physical chemistry of a new proposed low temperature route, reactive ball milling, is unclear but preliminary evaluations indicate that it is likely to suffer from high energy consumption. In conclusion, low temperature processing routes for metals generally consume more energy that comparable high temperature processing routes.

Grinding has been one of the areas of major development at Outokumpu's concentrators. During its early years the company used entirely rod and hall mills, but due to the high costs of metallic grinding it began the testing of autogenous grinding as early as the 1950s. In the late-1970s, the company's own modification for two stage autogenous grinding was ready for industrial use. Surprisingly late, in the 80s - 90s, an interest rose to check also the effects of grinding methods on flotation results. This paper firstly gives a short history of the development work of Outokumpu type autogenous grinding, called 'Outogenius'. The effects of some grinding methods on the process results of two nickel ores are then reviewed. The tests to date show notable effects of grinding methods on flotation.

Uranium minerals were found in Australia as early as 1869, but it was not until the 1940's that a search specifically for uranium was begun. Instrument types and techniques used in early exploration are still used today, but have been developed into more sophisticated and portable types. Recent improvements in exploration have been the introduction of the gamma ray spectrometer, radon sampling and geochemical surveys. The environments of presently defined uranium deposits are predominantly sedimentary. Known deposits in igneous environments are usually small. The size of targets which are likely to provide economic deposits is of the order of 10,000 tons U308, producible at a cost of less than $10 per pound. Such targets are most likely to be in Precambrian sediments or in granitic masses. Recent exploration in Australia has included investigation of Precambrian sediments, Precambrian and Palaeozoic granites, Mesozoic and Tertiary sediments, Precambrian volcanic rocks and brecciated masses of unknown age. The origin and method of emplacement of uranium in these environments is not well known but there are indications that syngenetic sedimentary processes are important, and volcanic rocks may make a major contribution to the supply of uranium.

Statistical frequency distributions may be used to characterize the overall variation of grade in orebodies. Special types of distribution (e.g. lognormal, log-type A) are necessary to describe skewness inthe case of rare metals. Also needed (but for the most part hitherto neglected) is the serial correlation function which describes the tendency for grades near together in an orebody to be closer together than grades at points relatively far apart.The sampling problem for orebodies is interpreted in statistical terms. Different methods are reviewed, and the effect of serial correlation discussed.A discussion is given, based on experiments and observations made by the author, of biases arising in the minei:l material by such methods as chip sampling and grab sampling due to such causes as nonrepresentative selection by the sampler.INTRODUCTIONMiners have always recognized the large element of chance in their operations. Chance is the raw material of statistical theory and, provided there is some recognizable pattern or underlying regularity in a set of data arising from the operation of chance events, statisticians are able to formulate mathematical models to study them. Mining engineers, geologists, and statisticians have gone a long way between them towards finding general statistical rules which describe the distribution of minerals and metals in orebodies, and even the distribution of orebodies over the earth's surface.These rules do not have the force of physical laws, though they obviously derive from them and have been used to throw light on them. Zinc-bearing massive sulphide deposits have been mined in Tasmania since 1900. The current major producers are Hellyer and Rosebery, with total resource tonnages (mined plus reserves) of 16 Mt (million tonnes) and 24.8 Mt respectively. These deposits belong to the class of seafloor volcanic-hosted massive sulphides (VHMS) and are located within the Mt Read Volcanics, a narrow belt of continental margin calcalkaline volcanics of Cambrian age. Compared to other Australian VHMS deposits, and world-wide MVT and Sedex deposits, the Tasmanian examples clearly stand-out due to their high metal grades, averaging over 17 per cent Pb+Zn. The deposits vary in morphology from mound style (Hellyer) to sheet style (Rosebery) with other combinations including stacked lenses (Que River) and disrupted cross-cutting bodies (Hercules). All deposits show the classic VHMS zonation from an Fe-Cu-bearing base to a Zn-Pb-Ba-rich top. Zinc, gold and silver tenor commonly increases toward the stratigraphic top of the deposits. The ores have been deformed during regional metamorphism, resulting in folding, shearing and recrystallisation of sulphide lenses. In addition to the major deposits, a number of small massive sulphide prospects occur throughout the volcanic belt and the potential for the discovery of further large, deeply buried deposits remains high.

The key elements required to maintain final wall integrity and hence slope reliability are discussed. Failure modes and mechanisms in highly structured rock slopes are then reviewed. The impact of blast disturbance on rock masses in general is discussed and the relationships between the slope failure mode and blast disturbance is then explored. The question of how designers can incorporate such impacts into the slope design process is then addressed. This necessarily involves rock mass strength consideration and two case studies are used to demonstrate a recent dilemma in this regard. Some progress regarding this dilemma has also been reported for the second case study. The major conclusions are that: Slope reliability can be severely compromised if the slopes are damaged by blasting and this impact is not often incorporated into the slope design process. The location and extent of the blast damage will impact some slope failure geometries and failure mechanisms more than others. The concept of failure mechanism specific vulnerability needs to be further developed. The evidence indicates that this aspect is even more extreme for weak ground conditions. The quantification of the reduction in rock mass strength due to blast damage is not well understood and limitations exist with some recent guidelines. The use of the Hoek-Brown criterion for slopes in blocky rock masses requires considerable judgement. Further applied developments in this regard would be very beneficial to the industry. Some promising methods to incorporate blast damage estimates into the slope design process are emerging. It is good business to minimise final wall blast damage otherwise a whole range of issues relating to reduced slope reliability emerge.
