Gas velocity (Jg) measurements conducted close to the froth-pulp interface over the cross-section of a flotation cell reveal how efficiently the incoming air is being dispersed throughout the volume of the cell. Furthermore, measurements of Jg at deepest locations in the cell provide valuable information about air recirculation and dispersion conditions in the bulk volume of the cell. Gas velocity in flotation cells has predominantly been measured by a transient capture of gas in a graduated probe. In this project, a new sensor for measuring gas velocity in an on-line manner was developed. A probe is partially immersed in the flotation machine, below the froth-liquid interface. The probe is used to collect the rising air bubbles from the liquid phase. The liquid-froth interface is shifted into the probe under vacuum. A controlled vacuum is kept inside the probe. As air bubbles burst inside the probe, the excess of air is continuously removed from the probe via suction. The removed air is measured using a mass flow meter. The fully automated sensor allows us to continuously measure Jg at different location in a flotation machine. An experimental programme was carried out in a 10 cm diameter laboratory flotation column to determine the accuracy and repeatability of the automated sensor. The new sensor was used for evaluating gas dispersion conditions in a 215 litre transparent laboratory scale flotation cell. Gas velocity distributions along the radial and axial directions of the cell were measured over a wide range of operating conditions. The operating conditions in the cell were modified by altering impeller speed and air flow rate. Two different rotor-stator mechanisms were utilised to disperse the air in the cell, the MultiMix and the FreeFlow mechanism. In this paper, a description of the gas velocity sensor is given, and the results of the experimental work are discussed in detail.

The bulk flotation behaviour of an industrial rougher bank has been determined with a view to characterising the size iepend ent behaviour of the identifiable nineral groups present. A relatively simple flotation model, based on first order kinetics and the assumption of perfect mixers in series ias been used to provide a fit to the operation of the cells. The adequacy of the model is discussed in relation to the characteristics of the ore and the size iependancy of the parameters. It is shown that improved fits are possible if the model accounts explicitly for this size dependancy and demonstrated how the model may be of use in prediction of the grade recovery relationships for different operating conditions as an aid to plant optimisation.

The presence of clays, in particular clay slime, may complicate many mining operations. Clay slime particles may possess a negative or positive charge depending upon the pH in the process and their presence may lead to reduced recoveries in flotation processes. It is assumed that slime particles may adsorb onto the surfaces of the minerals to be floated and by doing so, reducing the efficacy of the flotation chemicals. In this work it is shown that addition of a small amount of dispersant, either a polyacrylic acid or an anionic polyphenolic polymer, increases the recovery of copper and gold, both in laboratory trials and in plant testing of an ore with high clay content. Measurements of adsorption isotherms reveal that the tested dispersants show preferential adsorption towards the clay minerals present, suggesting that the improved recovery upon dispersant addition occurs by prevention of attachment of clay slime particles onto primarily chalcocite but also chalcopyrite.CITATION:Seaman, D R, Lauten, R A, Kluck, G and Stoitis, N, 2012. Underground mining with the cut and fill method has been declining during the past decade or so, being replaced mostly by sublevel open stoping methods. During 1983 the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association Ltd. (AMIRA) commissioned a review of the method, with the aim of compiling the state-of-the-art, indicating future trends and recommending topics for research that would be needed to support this future mining. Mines using the cut and fill method in Australia and three other countries were visited to compile current practices and expected developments.Cut and fill is mostly used where geological and ground conditions are unsuitable for open or caving methods. These range from narrow, irregular orebodies to wide, massive orebodies where pillars are retained in ore. There is significant potential for improvement and further development of the method. It may then be used in a broader range of conditions and for orebodies that may not otherwise be viable to mine.

The story of the Penjom gold mine located near Kuala Lipis on the Malay Peninsular demonstrates the valuable role successful exploration companies can play in the development of the gold mining industry. Avocet Mining PLC ('Avocet') began exploration in the area on a limited budget in 1989, securing land tenure around the Penjom alluvial workings in July 1990. The lease granted, known as Block 7, formed part of a land package offered at the time by the Pahang State Government to develop the resources of the area. Until the late-1980s, the Kuala Lipis region, situated approximately 180 km north west of Kuala Lumpur, had restricted accessibility for security reasons precluding serious exploration or mining activity. The situation has changed dramatically in the 1990s, with several foreign explorers active in the Peninsular, targeting old alluvial and underground workings adjacent to the north-south trending Raub-Bentong Suture. Deeper drilling of these prospects has shown there is potential for both small- to medium-scale open pit mining and possibly underground operations, providing companies such as Avocet with an ideal mining investment opportunity.

The need to recover metals from low grade deposits, old tailings, etc., combined with improvements in equipment design and the development of new extractants, has resulted in solvent extraction (SX) metal recovery reaching new importance (Webster & Ferron, 1993). The basic principle of solvent extraction is the use of an equilibrium system in which a metal ion is transferred from an aqueous phase into an organic phase, (Equation 1), (Ritcey, 1984). M + E ME . (1) The organic extractant (E) is usually specific for a certain metal ion (M) and forms a metal complex in the organic phase, leaving the impurities behind in the aqueous phase. To recover the metal, the equilibrium is reversed and the metal ion is transferred back from the organic to another aqueous phase in a process called stripping. The metal is then recovered from the aqueous strip solution, usually by electrowinning.

The discovery of gold mineralization at the Manhattan mercury mine, Napa and Yolo counties, California in 1978 was the result of applying a new exploration ore deposit model in a region previously unprospected for gold. This discovery, the McLaughlin gold mine, owned and operated by Home-stake Mining Company, is a classic epithermal mercury-hot springs-gold deposit currently producing approximately 7,776,000 grams of gold annually.The exploration program that led to this discovery was based on a mercury-hot springs-gold genetic model. The model was developed using basic knowledge of ore-forming processes plus careful field observations made during examination of many known precious metal districts in. the Western U.S.A. Theoretically, hot spring systems could host gold deposits and, indeed, gold in these environments had been recognized for years. However, at the time of the McLaughlin discovery, it was not known to occur in sufficient quantities to inspire geologists to explore hot spring systems specifically for gold. Field observations recognized the presence of hot spring deposits and mercury mineralization asso-ciated with precious metal districts, (Bodie, California being a type example), and this associ-ation prompted the development of a hypothetical model. Subsequent exploration activities were directed towards the examination of mercury mines and prospects as potential targets for gold deposits. The model envisioned hot spring deposits (sinter) containing mercury mineralization at the surface with anomalous gold values grading downward into significant ore grade gold values.

Roller seed screens were installed at The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (B.H.P.) Whyalla pellet plant to replace vibrating screens on the green ball circuits. The installation of roller screens was justified by improving the sizing of the green balls. This improved sizing increased the yield of fired pellets produced from green balls thus decreasing the fuel consumption. The fired pellet sizing was improved also. This paper discusses the configuration of the roller screens installed at Whyalla, quality of green balls produced, advantages of roller screens compared with vibrating screens and future development of roller Screens.

U-Th isotope studies of recent volcanic rocks may be used to evaluate the depths and rates of melt generation beneath mid- ocean ridges and ocean islands. Island arc rocks exhibit a similar range in Th isotopes to that seen in both MORB and OIB, but while those with high (230Th/232Th) tend to have excess 238U, many of those with low (230Th/232Th) are in isotope equilibrium. The excess 238U is attributed to the preferential mobilisation of U in hydrous fluids from the subducted slab within the last 100,000 years, whereas the low Th isotope ratios in the higher-K arcs are primarily due to the introduction of subducted sediment. Preliminary results from mineral separates from lavas on Soufriere on the island of St. Vincent indicate that some of the minerals crystallised up to 50,000 years prior to eruption.

This paper presents results of an investigation on acoustic emission characteristics of granite, sandstone and rock-like material in the unconfined compression and tensile tests. Both the acoustic emission signature and stress-stain curve are analysed in the experiments.The experimental results show that different acoustic emission characteristics are observed at different stress and deformation stages in unconfined compression and tensile testing. Extensive and unstable acoustic emission changes may be interpreted as indicating failure of the rock.

This is the second of a series of papers dealing with Geology in Exploration. The first, published by the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, Proceedings Nos. 143-144, 1946, was written as an introduction to the subject and employed the exploration geology of the Cobar field to illustrate the prospect thinking. This paper will be concerned with the problem of ore repetition in depth and borrow its- example from the Mount Lyell copper field. The writing will be taken up altogether by the example. Nevertheless the intention remains to develop the subject in terms of its wide interest and application.The Mount Lyell field possesses large actual and prospective resources within, and in the vicinity of, the known deposits. This paper does not bear at all on these accessible ore reserves and tangible prospects. There is also in this area evidence of deep ore. The possibility is of little practical interest at present. But the picture of ore repetition, exemplified by the Mount Lyell field, does matter now to the outlook on exploration in this country. For once this essential feature of ore occurrence is widely understood there may develop, on the scale warranted, the search for major deposits which do not outcrop but which are still at shallow depths because of the part erosion plays in this story of concealment and exposure of ore. Also there is the chance in some fields (including Mount Lyell) of a second harvest of orebodies within mineable depths. This exploration goal, introduced in the first paper, will appear more clearly as the Geology in Exploration series is written up. Here the concern is to show the character of the geological evidence which points to the occurrence and recurrence of ore in the earth's crust, the picture at the foundation of this exploration scheme. Water is a defining feature of the Pilbara. Its management was and remains vital for the pastoral industry which European settlers established when they first came to the Pilbara, and for the mining industry which now dominates economic activity in the Pilbara. Water availability in the Pilbara is, however, problematic. Severe droughts and major floods can occur at close intervals. In response to this uncertainty, the Department of Water undertook a Prefeasibility Study to determine, at a high level, the water requirements and opportunities in the Pilbara region. This paper reports on the outcomes of this study and the water integration opportunities in the region, identifying the sources of water supply and offers possible options for managing this water sustainably for the present and future demand. A range of supply opportunities is reviewed including: dewatering from mining operations, surface water, and desalination. All opportunities were subject to order of magnitude costing, including capital, whole of life and retail unit pricing with preferred options receiving further interrogation through triple bottom line (TBL) analysis to prioritise solutions. Options were also subject to intangible quantification (IQ) including benefits from the reduction of carbon emissions to ensure that the preferred option is based on factors other than just the least cost. Demand analysis was undertaken to identify current and future requirements and were assessed through review and integration of regional and sub regional master plans and consultation with mining, agriculture, industry and the community. The paper concludes that the viability of a Pilbara integrated water supply scheme depends on the development of a financial mechanism involving both government and industry participation models. The agreed scheme formed the basis of a submission to Infrastructure Australia for funding assistance.

Based upon the previous work of Norman and Loeb, a method, was used, to assess-the comparative wearing properties of ten different alloys being used, or being considered for use, as mill liners and grinding media at Mount Isa. The materials to be tested were obtained in the form of large diameter balls and were run, along with the regular ball charge, in a large ball mill operating-under normal grinding conditions. At selected. intervals, the test balls were removed from the mill, weighed and identified, and their relative wear rates determined.

In order for the Australian underground coal mining industry to achieve the high productivity rates demanded of it without compromising its good safety record, improved geotechnical monitoring systems are required. One of the main problem areas affecting underground coal mining is the deterioration of previously stable roadways.CSIRO Division of Geomechanics has been working on a NERDDC funded project to develop an instrument to monitor coal mine roof deformation. The instrument which has been developed, Roof Alert, is a self contained, battery powered, intrinsically safe device. It can monitor the magnitude and rate of deformation and give multiple, variable visual alarm signals where preset levels ate exceeded.

The Olympic Dam mineral discovery by Western Mining Corporation (WMC) in South Australia has been shown to contain one of the world's largest known deposits of copper and uranium; gold and silver are also present. Development of the deposit jointly by WMC and the BP Group is awaiting commitment, with planning based on initial production of gold in 1987 and copper and uranium in 1988.

The Mineral Research Centre is located at Perth in the suburb of Waterford, adjacent to Curtin University of Technology and within a Technology Precinct which includes Technology Park. The Centre, constructed by the WA Government at a cost of $16 million and occupied in late-1994, comprises three separate buildings housing the CSIRO Division of Minerals, Curtin University's School of Chemical Engineering and the Mineral Processing Laboratory of the Department of Minerals and Energy. The emphasis on R&D at the Centre is primarily in hydrometallurgy as a result of staff expertise, extensive bench and pilot-scale facilities, track record with the industry and, very importantly, two of the occupiers being partners in the AJ Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy. Staff in the Centre have a long involvement with R&D agencies such as AMIRA and MERIWA. The hydrometallurgical focus of the Centre complements that of pyrometallurgy at the GK Williams CRC in Melbourne and the Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment in Brisbane, to ensure that the mineral processing industry in Australia has access to a complete range of expertise and facilities to serve its needs.

The Mobile Miner MM130 was delivered to Broken Hill in February 1992. During March the machine was extensively trialled on the surface to test manoeuvrability, climbing ability and muck handling prior to being trammed underground in April. The first cutting test on 30 April 1992 provided promising results. The machine has undergone continual development since it arrived in Broken Hill with aims of ensuring reliability and achieving performance goals. The paper gives a detailed account of recent performance comparing this with the predicted Performance.
