The aquifer at Phosphate Hill, north-west Queensland, presents special management challenges. The site contains a phosphate rock mine, fertilizer plant and camp. All of the site water is provided by the Duchess Embayment Aquifer, located within the Burke River Outlier of the Georgina Basin. The Duchess Embayment is a triangular shaped, Cambrian marine sedimentary basin consisting of siliceous and calcareous phosphorites, shales, siltstones and sandstones. It is fault-bounded on all sides and has a regional dip of 5¦E. The aquifer is largely confined to the siliceous facies of the Beetle Creek Formation. It has a very flat potentiometric surface and an average thickness of 45 m with confining beds above and below. The siliceous facies derives from weathering of the calcareous phase and is highly transmissive while the calcareous zone itself contains less water and is dependent upon interconnecting fractures for its permeability. Recharge appears to occur where the siliceous facies crops out around the edges of, and within, the Embayment. Aquifer management issues revolve around two points: successful dewatering of the orebody for mining; and efficient management to maintain water quality and ensure supply over the predicted 30-year life of the project. Current operations are extracting water at levels much below that originally estimated. This is having a detrimental effect on mine dewatering with the SWL lowering at a rate slower than anticipated. As a result, ore parcels are now beginning to intersect the water table, providing a major constraint to the mining plan. The aquifer drawdown cone is extensive and very flat so to keep the water table at an appropriate level for mining the management plan will include more aggressive dewatering to lower the level of the entire aquifer. The additional water will either be disposed of downstream or stored in a holding dam or via the use of artificial storage and recharge. Water resource management will also need to maintain the current quality. About 37 per cent of the water currently extracted forms the low chloride supply required by the ammonia plant and the power station. This ratio is expected to remain applicable under any future operating conditions but the low chloride resource is restricted so will require prudent management to enable the supply to continue. At current usage rates aquifer recharge versus use will need careful monitoring to ensure that the resource remains viable in the long-term.

The instruments are described which measure rock mass displacements, permeability changes and alterations to hydrology. Methods of installation are detailed and the applicability of instruments discussed. Reduction and interpretation of results are detailed.

The mineralogy of new certified-reference-materials (CRM) for X-ray fluorescence from Western Australia (ASCRM 030 to 035) was analysed by X-ray diffraction using the BRUKER energy dispersive one-dimensional detector LYNXEYE-XE. The samples were studied using standard-less quantitative phase analysis, based on the Rietveld method. This method delivers the relative amount of crystalline phases. All materials were found to be high-grade iron ore predominantly consisting of hematite and goethite and very low amounts of magnetite. In addition, the gangue mineralogy was characterised. It consists of low-per cent amounts of carbonate (siderite/calcite), quartz, kaolinite, chlorite and gibbsite.Furthermore, all samples were analysed with the external standard method. This is an elegant way to probe for amorphous content without adding an internal standard. All six samples were found to contain up to 16 per cent amorphous or nano-crystalline material.CITATION:Knorr, K and Birch, S, 2013. The Mount Lyell Company's concentrating mill is situated about a quarter of a mile westward of the portal of the North Lyell tunnel, which serves the North Lyell, Royal Tharsis and Crown Lyell mines, being on the 1100-ft. level of the first named. The Comstock mine is connected with the tram system at this level by five and a half miles of steam tramway, two-foot gauge being standard throughout.The plant is well placed with regard to all essential services and has an excellent water-supply from a series of three dams on the West Queen river.MILLING ORESThe mill feed is a mixture of the outputs from the foUr mines mentioned, each of which has its characteristic ore, but, generally speaking, about half of the ore consists of siliceous schists and the other half of hard grey quartzite. The schisty ores are easy to crush, but, on grinding, while the schist slimes readily, the quartz granules are hard, resulting in the handling of heavy loads on the secondary classifiers. The quartzite ores are both hard to crush and difficultto grind.The principal sulphide materials are bornite, chalcopyrite, and pyrite, chalcopyrite being the main copper-bearing mineral.The crystallization is coarse in the schisty ores, but it has been shown that even the 200 mesh (Tyler) material contains included sulphide particles. At the present time the sizing of the final tailing averages 80% through 200 mesh.

The Glenrock Group forms the uppermost part of the Early Devonian to Early Carboniferous Burdekin Basin sequence in the Townsville hinterland, north Queensland. As redefined, three formations make up the Glenrock Group. The Percy Creek Volcanics (base), the dominantly epiclastic Mount Douglas Formation, and the Horse Pocket Volcanics (top). The Ellenvale beds unconformably overlie the Mount Douglas Formation and Percy Creek Volcanics and have been excluded from the Glenrock Group as defined by Wyatt and Jell (1980). Three facies associations are recognised in the Mount Douglas Formation: Alluvial Plain facies, Alluvial Fan facies and Lacustrine facies.Deposition of the Glenrock Group, began with the eruption of massive basalt and basaltic andesite lavas, probably in a volcanic arc setting. With time, the volcanism evolved to become more dacitic to rhyolitic in composition. Waning of the volcanic activity appeared to coincide with uplift of source areas (probably to the west). Deposition on an alluvial plain during this waning volcanic cycle, gave way to alluvial fans at the margins of the uplifted terrain. As the uplift ceased and the system became more mature, the alluvial fans gave way to widespread lakes. Rhyolitic ignimbrite and airfall tuff, interbedded with the alluvial plain, alluvial fan and lacustrine facies, indicate that some volcanism continued, probably vented in the uplifted terrain to the west.

Optimisation and sensitivity analysis of final pit limits is now an accepted procedure for open pit planning studies. Tools to assist the design engineer in an underground metalliferous mine to make optimal choices for the selection of major development, stope geometry and cut-off grade analysis have not been available. The engineer has had to rely on experience and a limited analysis of design alternatives. A new tool called the `floating stope' has been developed to define the optimal (boundary) limit for material that can be economically extracted by underground stoping methods. The method is analogous to the `floating cone' method of open pit optimisation. The geology and mineralisation are modelled as a regular or subcell block model. Included in the model are structural and geotechnical features, and any previously mined out areas. Inputs to the procedure include the minimum stope dimensions, cut-off grade, stope head grade, and the way in which dilution is to be calculated. The optimisation procedure can be directed to maximise ore tonnes, grade, contained metal or the economic (dollar) value of material mined. The procedure can be applied at each stage of mine evaluation and design to assist with preliminary resource appraisal, selection of stoping methods, and detailed mine design. As with open pit optimisation procedures, manual intervention by an experienced engineer is required to produce practical and detailed designs. This practical design should follow the optimised design as closely as possible. The paper outlines the algorithms used in the definition of the stope envelope, and describes the analysis and results of several case studies where the optimisation procedure has been applied.

Thermal constants such as thermal con- ductivity and thermal diffusivity of rock and coefficient of heat transfer of airway wall are the most important characteristic values which decide accuracy of prediction calcula- tion. However, quality of rock is not homoge- neous and water content in rock varies with location and so, a method for in-situ measure- ment of thermal constants must be taken in. The method developed by us is to measure in- situ rock temperatures at two different depths from airway wall. It is simple and we found its accuracy is good enough in the engineering Sense.

Ranger Uranium Mines (RUM) operates an open cut located in the Top End of the North- ern Territory. Strict environmental controls govern all operations and the water management requirements have the greatest impact on mine planning. The two main goals of planning are to provide mill feed and to mine sufficient suitable quality waste rock for ongoing con- struction of the tailings dam. Early planning concentrated on staged development of the pit to provide access to as much ore as possible for a given amount of development. All waste was considered to be suitable construction material. Grade control of crusher feed was the main problem in planning, as wide vari- ations occur in ore grade over relatively short distances. Water management for the site ope- rates a no release' system for contaminated waters. Design storage has proven inadequate, and the open cut has been used as the extra storage. As construction of future stages of the tailings dam requires non-mineralised rock materials which meet specific quality criteria, the mine has had to re-examine long term plan- ning and pit development strategies. This has entailed the collection of much data not re- quired under normal mining conditions, such as the assaying of waste drill core. The overall impact on mine planning of the environmental regulations has been to alter the philosophy of earlier planning, making it necessary to create a new strategy for pit development with

In this study, the effect of hydrodynamic parameters on the iron ore reverse was investigated in a mechanical flotation cell. The work carries out using the case study of Iron ore from Vale in Brazil. The influence of hydrodynamic factors such as froth height, impeller speed, superficial gas velocity and solids percentage were evaluated on the quartz flotation. The results showed that the hydrodynamic conditions have a great effect on the flotation performance, especially on the fine and coarse quartz. The size-by-size analysis of the froth products showed that froth height, impeller speed, superficial gas velocity and solids percentage have a significant effect on true flotation quartz particles. The increase in the froth height decreased the recovery of quartz particles. The increase in the impeller speed increases the recovery of quartz particles to an optimum. The increase in the superficial gas velocity improved the flotation of coarse quartz particles. The increase in the solids percentage increases the recovery of quartz particles.

It has long been recognised that narrow vein mining needs innovative approaches to mine access and mining methods in order to improve the economics of this vital part of the mining industry. The mining equipment used currently requires large openings in narrow vein-type deposits making mining operations uneconomical. In view of this and other shortcomings of the current mining practices, a study was initiated to investigate the potential of using low profile electric loader with mounted conveyor in conjunction with the electric monorail haulage system (EMTS) to load and haul the blasted material, particularly in decline development and main haulages. Computer simulation based on the General Purpose Simulation System/Henrikson (GPSS/H) is used to model the system and evaluate its performance. The results are compared with those for conventional mining using trucks and loaders. The EMTS provides competitive haulage rates in substantially smaller excavations than is currently achievable. According to simulation results, the electric loader in conjunction with the EMTS had the same number of blasts as the conventional system and hence the same advance rate of 3.33 m per 12 hour shift. Furthermore, the total drill-blast-load-haul cycle time was less than the conventional system by one hour.CITATION:Besa, B and Chanda, E K, 2012. This paper presents a method of measuring field power consumption of shearers and deriving specific energy consumption versus shearer haulage speed performance curves. A description of a computer program which simulates the cutting action of a shearer drum is presented. A comparison between the field specific energy curves and the computer simulation results is made. The simulation results compare well with the field data where all the coal seam is being cut by the shearer. The computer simulation results give back-calculated field pick force cutting characteristics, which allow the performance of the shearer to be predicted for other operating conditions, e.g. effect of changes to pick lacing, effect of changing the drum rotational speed, allows the calculation of power requirements for a particular production rate.

The design of underground mine roadways (tunnels) requires a detailed understanding of the in situ stressfield, the rock failure modes, the performance characteristics of reinforcement or support members and assessment of the stress state about the roadway. Definition of these factors, together with monitoring of roadway behaviour during both development and extraction operations, allows rational design procedures to be undertaken.The design approach utilised computational techniques to simulate the behaviour of the strata about the opening for a range of anticipated stressfields and various reinforcement options. Field validation studies are conducted to confirm the design expectations.

BHP Billiton Iron Ore initiated a program in January 1995 at the Mt Whaleback operation in Newman, Western Australia to develop a closure plan for the overburden storage areas (OSA), which have the potential to generate acid rock drainage. The primary research program includes the development of technology for the long-term performance of OSAs with respect to slope stability, surface run-off, erosion, water infiltration and vegetation. The objective is to control acid rock drainage by preventing moisture movement into and through the OSA material. Infiltration to the underlying OSA material and closure costs are minimised due to the presence of the run-of-mine (ROM) cover material. A summary of the field data is presented to illustrate low percolation rates to the underlying OSA and key performance characteristics of the moisture store and release cover system design. Field data collected to date demonstrates that a moisture store and release cover system constructed with suitable ROM material has good potential as a final cover system at the Mt Whaleback site. The performance of the cover system on a sloped surface was significantly different as compared to placing the cover system on a horizontal surface.

Rail, port and shipping charges represent 30 to 50 per cent of landed costs for Australian coal mines selling to Asia. This proportion is higher for sales to Europe, yet it is in Europe where Australian producers are aiming for increased market share. The landed cost of coal to the international customer is the key parameter which determines market competitiveness. The objective of this study is to examine Australian export coal competitiveness in terms of transport distance. The approach used examines world coking coal and steaming coal production and the transport distances between major exporting regions and importing countries. Reference is made to the importance of land transport costs and a comparative approach for emphasising the relative magnitude of this factor is developed. Models developed are examined in terms of Australia's exports and a conclusion is reached that a reduction in rail freight costs would be an effective measure for improving the competitiveness of Australia's coal industry.

Mining is the oldest industrial practice on the planet with a history dating back over 3000 years. Since the early iron age ores have been extracted for use in a variety of contexts by humankind, from domestic to military, transport and more recently for complex industrial applications. Mineral exploration and extraction has evolved from the early exploitation of primary metal occurrences in relatively small quantities such as iron, gold, coal and copper, to the bulk mining and extraction of highly complex polymetallic oxides and sulfides today. Since the industrial revolution, mining practice has evolved substantially to support an increasing range and quantity of required metals and to accommodate the increasing scarcity of high-quality sources of these metals. A common response to the increasing scarcity of mineral resources has been to expand production through simple economies of scale, thus diluting fixed costs. This approach, however, is increasingly ineffective in the face of current trends, that include increasingly complex mineralogy, increasing pressure on environmental footprint - energy in particular, and increasing scarcity of capital for the construction of presently popular æmega-minesÆ. This paper examines historical trends and current practice in mineral exploitation in the light of the current global revolution in social, environmental and economic values as the projects move towards a vastly different topology for the industry for continued success in years to come.CITATION:Bamber, A S, 2012. A major aspect in competitive ironmaking is to replace metallurgical coke by injecting alternative cheap fuels. Whereas in the past, heavy oil injection as well as on a lower scale natural gas injection have proved to be reliable, the progressing high price level of these fuels has prompted international interest in looking for alternative cheaper fuels, especially pulverized coal. Theoretical analysis and practical operations showed that for constant adiabatic flame temperature, potentially more coke may be replaced by injected coal than by heavy oil, because of less endothermic cracking of hydrogen components. The central Taupo Volcanic Zone is a region of intense Quaternary silicic volcanism accompanying rapid crustal extension. Modem central TVZ is the most frequently active and productive silicic volcanic system on Earth, erupting rhyolite at c. 0.28 m' s'. The rhyolites show no major compositional changes with time, but the total extent of magma chamber zonation has changed with the advent of rifting and crustal extension at c.0.7 Ma. At least 34 caldera-forming ignimbrite eruptions have formed a complex sequence of relatively short-lived, nested and/or overlapping volcanic centres in central TVZ. Taupo contrasts with other large silicic magmatic systems in the exceptionally high frequency, but small size, of caldera- forming eruptions. This contrast reflects the thin, rifted nature of the TVZ crust, that precludes the development of long- term magmatic cycles at Taupo.Within central TVZ, non-rhyolitic compositions have been erupted apparently irregularly in time and space; in particular there is no evidence for a geographic separation of basalts from andesites. TVZ is a rifted arc, but its segmented nature, high thermal flux and voluminous rhyolitic volcanism make it unique on Earth.
