Pillar mining methods at the Pasminco Mining Broken Hill Operations are not new. Since mining commenced on Pasminco's leases at the turn of the century virtually every pillar extraction method tried throughout the world has been used. Much of the remaining mineral resource in the Pasminco Broken Hill leases is contained in pillars.However, due to the on-going need for mechanisation with bulk mining methods, and the very peculiar physical circumstances surrounding the formation of these pillars, their exploitation requires the development of a virtually new method based on excavation technology not previously used in the Australian mining industry. Trials of the method are to take place at the southern operations during 1991.

Quite apart from economic considerations, the following performance parameters must be considered when selecting an explosive for a particular blasting operation. 1. total energy yield/kg, and more particularly, strain energy/kg and bubble energy/kg of charge 2. charge weight/m of blasthole 3. sensitivity of the charge 4. water resistance of the charge The effective division of an explosive's total energy into strain energy (SE) and bubble energy (BE) is explained as is the influence of each energy component on blast results. Because some rocks require a high strain energy for effective breakage, while others are most satisfactorily fragmented by bubble energy, values of SE and BE are more meaningful than those of total energy. Unfortunately, our extensive knowledge of the effects of certain variables on total energy has not yet been completely supplanted by the influence of these variables on SE and BE values. As South African gold mines go deeper, and improved and more uniform working condi- tions are required, ever larger amounts of refrigeration are needed. At the same time new and more suitable cooling equipment is becoming available for use with new mining layouts as well as on existing shaft systems. The advent of the large diameter rotor screw compressor has meant that there is now a machine available with great flexibility in performance and construction for efficient underground use. The first installation using this type of machine is described.

About 74% of global seismic energy release occurs in the Circum-Pacific zone. Worldwide, about 71% of seismic energy release is in the form of shallow earthquakes, 27% as intermediate, and 2% as deep earthquakes. Seismic energy release is variable in time and has been shown to correlate with the amplitude of the Chandler wobble. It was high during the period 1949 to 1967, and is now at a rather low level, with the latest earthquake over M = 8.0 having taken place in Indonesia in 1971. The average worldwide recurrence rate for the expected largest magnitude earthquake (M "9.5) has been estimated as several tens of years, in marked contrast to the several tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of years separating the largest volcanic eruptions. Geological studies are needed to establish reliable mean intervals between large earthquakes, and to detect the e;:istence of long-term fluctuations in the ste of occurrence. Seismic gaps have proved seful in static forecasting of large earthquakes, by identifying places where closer study of the variation with time of seismicity, deformation, and other parameters, may lead to the dynamic p_ediction of time, place and magnitude of earthquakes. The model of stress concentration at asperities explains the main features of seismicity in the Circum-Pacific. Slow earthquakes have been detected instrumentally, notably an event immediately preceding the 22 May 1960 Chile earthquake, the largest this century. It seems likely that this type of deformation may explain both instrumentally detected and macroscopically observed pre-seismic deformation, as well as unusual animal behaviour reported before some earthquakes. Seismic and volcanic events are interdependent, with large earthquakes commonly triggering eruptions. Melting of rock and intrusion of magma is likely to accompany many earthquakes.

The flow field induced in an Outokumpu TankCell and by an OK rotor-stator mixing device in a laboratory and a process size flotation cell was modelled numerically using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The primary target was to discover and reproduce the various interactions between the flow field and the flotation cell by numerical means. As power consumption depends sensitively on flow field, it can be regarded as a top-level derived quantity (or measure/metric) indicating the validity of the numerically obtained flow field. Having properly validated numerical means to produce the flow field the influence of various design parameters can be captured with certain accuracy. In addition, separate gas and solid phase models for bubbles and solids, respectively, were implemented. The comparisons between velocities and turbulence quantities measured using the laser doppler velocimetry (LDV) technique and CFD modelling were performed. The grid generation was performed with the commercial Gambit 1.3 and the subsequent integration and solving of the resulting algebraic equations with the commercial CFD-code Fluent 6.22. The computationally economic multiple reference frame method was included to model the moving rotor blades. Gas and solid phase models were modified mixture models.

The criteria developed for the Argyle Diamond Mine process plant control system are reviewed. The control system installed is described along with a discussion of the method of implementation adopted. The control system was extensively tested prior to instal- lation at site. This approach led to signi- ficant time savings during plant commissioning and facilitated rapid escalation of plant production. The control system has performed satisfactorily with a high level of operator acceptance and basically satisfies the criteria Developed.

Flotation columns represent an important addition to flotation practice. Columns have largely replaced. conventional machines in molybdenum cleaning in Canada. Columns have been successfully tested on bulk copper/molybdenum cleaning at Gibraltar Mines Ltd. A rougher cleaner/scavenger cleanercombination was shown to be capable of giving higher grades and recoveries compared with three stages of conventional cleaning. A control strategy for the columns has been developed. An interaction between gas hgldup and wash water rate has been exploited to control performance.

During trials which began in May 2005, traditional steel dump bodies for transporting iron ore on 220-tonne haul trucks at a Labrador iron ore mine were compared to a novel rubber suspended dump body. Loads were measured and compared over some 93 700 loads, representing more than 20 Mt transported. Maintenance costs and downtime were also measured over the course of the trial, which lasted nearly one year. This paper outlines the parameters and results of the trials. Parameters measured included payload and production improvements, carry-back reduction, downtime due to body maintenance, and wear on the floor of the suspended dump body. These parameters were then compared to those for conventional steel dump bodies in use at the mine, and conclusions were drawn. The resulting comparisons were significantly positive in favour of the new suspended dump bodies, confirming that each truck could haul an additional 41 000 tonnes per year, that downtime hours could be considerably reduced, and that body availability and service life can be extended through use of the suspended dump body. There was also a high level of operator acceptance of the suspended dump bodies due to less loading shock and a smoother ride.

Anoxic limestone drains (ALDs) have been widely used in the passive treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD), but their effectiveness has often been less than anticipated. Iron hydroxide often precipitates around limestone particles and inhibits neutralisation. To determine the conditions under which iron hydroxide precipitates, a small-scale laboratory ALD system was built to enable a detailed examination of the chemistry of iron within the drain. For one experiment, a mixture of limestone and quartz was introduced to the drain to assist in the determination of the key mechanism governing iron precipitation. Synthetic anaerobic acid mine drainage containing Fe2+ (~130 ppm), SO4 2- and H+ was pumped at a rate of 30 mL/min up a 90 cm tall, 15 cm diameter vertical column filled with limestone gravel of 98 per cent purity. Three sampling ports were fitted at equal intervals along the column; water was periodically extracted for analysis at the sampling ports over an 11-hour period. Experiments were run at influent pH levels of 2 and 4. Results show that acid neutralisation to pH greater than 6 occurred at the inflow end of the drain. The greatest amount of iron precipitation (19.5 per cent) also occurred in this area. The lack of iron precipitation on the quartz surfaces in the quartz/limestone mixture indicates that neutralisation is the key mechanism for the precipitation of iron hydroxide on limestone particles. A pe-pH stability diagram derived for the laboratory ALD system indicates that ALDs will not be effective for AMD with pH 2. Influent waters with pH 2 require a pe of -2 (Eh: -118.4 mV) to avoid Fe precipitation upon neutralisation. Influent waters of pH 4 require a pe between -2 and -4.

Testing methods include boring hand, with percussion rigs; with auger and pit digging drills; and l by vibro drilling. Sampling errors are minimized by the use of correct techniques and equipment for boring, sampling, and sample dressing, A hypothetical set of data is used to demonstrate the final process of evaluation, and some relevant taxation provisions are discussed.

KiwiRail has a goal of significantly improving passenger rail services to west Auckland, as part of its DART (Developing Auckland’s Rail Transport) suite of projects. The New Lynn Rail Trench (NLRT) project was a significant component of this work. The NLRT project facilitates essential doubletracking of the Western Auckland line, and provides a new commuter transportation hub within a busy town centre.The 1.5 km stretch of track through the New Lynn town centre has bisected the township for over 80 years. Double-tracking the line provided the opportunity to grade-separate road and rail, which would help to re-connect both sides of the township and enhance public amenity and safety.KiwiRail employed an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) procurement model engaging a consortium comprising Fletcher Construction, Beca Infrastructure and Synergine to develop a Design and Construct solution.With weak soil conditions and high groundwater levels, a diaphragm wall construction method to form the trench walls was selected as the best solution. Further challenges to construction included working within a narrow rail corridor constrained by buildings along much of the boundary, and a requirement to keep the existing line open for rail services. Detailed construction planning was required to ensure rail and construction safety in a constrained space whilst building the trench walls, propping these walls during excavation, and constructing the base slab in the most efficient way possible.This paper will detail the geotechnical conditions and the additional constraints that made this rail trench a challenging structure to design. It will also describe the fi nal design and construction methodologies that were employed, that allowed very successful completion of the project.Additionally, this paper will review the design and construction lessons applicable to the current Victoria Park Tunnel project, and indeed for all future cut and cover tunnel projects in the Auckland isthmus.

Borehole geophysical logging data are routinely acquired during exploration of coal deposits in Australia. These data are commonly used qualitatively to identify and correlate coal seams and geotechnically significant interburden rock units. Some quantitative analysis, such as using sonic logs for rock strength estimation is becoming increasingly widespread. This paper discusses results from a project aimed at expanding the quantitative approach to more detailed mineralogical and lithological analysis, which leads to improved geotechnical characterisation for mine planning and mining hazard reduction. A standard suite of wireline logs measuring density, natural gamma, sonic and neutron were analysed from three coal mines in the Bowen Basin. Thirty-nine samples from cored sections of the boreholes were analysed by X-ray diffraction, spectral gamma counts and hyperspectral scanning. Using a standard petrophysical approach to calculating porosity, shale and matrix components from a combination of density, natural gamma and neutron logs, a good correlation with observed mineralogy was demonstrated. However, unusual mineralogies such as heavy minerals or low-potassium clays may distort this analysis. Simultaneous evaluation of all available geophysical logs by modern data mining methods was able to show how these ambiguities may be solved.

Pre-drainage experiments have been conduct- ed at Appin, Cook, John Darling, Leichhardt, Macquarie, Metropolitan and Moura No. 2 Collieries. Appin (550 m deep) experiences particular gas problems in development drivages, and the almost pure CH4 seam gas makes difficult tiro compliance with statutory maxima in intakes and returns. Patterns of 43 mm diameter drain- a,.;e holes drilled ahead and laterally into virgin coal have improved gas conditions in working places and have allowed tolerable advance rates. Cook, Leichhardt, Metropolitan and Moura No,. 2 Collieries have experienced gas and stress phenomena ranging from conical bursts less than one tonne to full scale instantan- -us outbursts of hundreds of tonnes with tens ,f thousands of cubic metres of seam gas. The Knelson Concentrator is a centrifugal gold concentrator developed in Canada, which utilises the combination of high gravitational ("G") forces and a unique fluidising action to efficiently recover free gold particles from minus 6 mm to fine micron gold in both alluvial and hardrock applications.Operating parameters including water requirements, fluidising pressures and feed rates are given, as well as an indication of their various effects on gold recovery.Results include a Colorado School of Mines Research Institute (CSMRI) report comparing the Knelson concentrator with various other gravity concentrators.

Today the application of computer programs for planning of mine-ventilation and for safety- analysis of ventilation systems is widespread practice in German mining. The computer program for network calculat- ion, developed at the "Mine Ventilation Testing Centre of the Westfalische Berggewerkschaft- skasse" allows the distribution of airflow and pressure in mines to be calculated. In a physically well founded manner it takes into account the natural ventilation as well as changes of volume-flow in the mine, which both are dependent on pressure and temperature. Compared to an incompressible treatment of the mine air these circumstances are of increasing importance with the increase of depth, air temperatures and fan-pressures'. This especial- ly holds for the calculation of airflows during failures of fans or for assessing the influence of open mine-fires on ventilation. The application of the program is very easy and its structure is made to fit the requirements of practice. For instance it takes into account the fan characteristics of all fans. Ion exchange using strong base resins is a well established technology for the recovery and purification of uranium from sulfuric acid leach liquors. Production of uranium at the Beverley Mine in South Australia includes acidic in situ leaching, ion exchange and uranium precipitation. The salinity present in the groundwater results in a relatively high concentration of chloride in the leach liquor reporting to the ion exchange plant. The impact of chloride on the ion exchange process is discussed in this paper. The results presented show that an increased chloride concentration in the lixiviant solution feeding the ion exchange plant leads to increased uptake of chloride by the resin during the loading cycle. At the highest chloride concentration studied (7.5 g/L Cl) chloride took up to 60 per cent of the resin loading sites. The impact of the chloride can be summarised as follows: for a given uranium concentration in the lixiviant feed solution, the uranium loading decreased with increasing chloride concentration; a consequence of decreased uranium loading is an increase in the frequency of elution, with an associated increase in elution reagent costs; and for a given elution efficiency, the uranium concentration in the barrens is expected to increase with increasing chloride concentration.A few options were examined to counteract the impact of chloride: an increase in elution efficiency was targeted to reduce the amount of uranium returning to the loading circuit; increasing the pH improved uranium loading, but this was found to also increase iron extraction; and preliminary screening of alternative resins showed that the higher the theoretical ion exchange capacity of the strong base resin, the higher the uranium loading.Work is continuing on uranium recovery from saline leach liquors, specifically investigating the performance of alternative resins.

The paper describes the detailed hydrogeological studies carried out prior to the sinking of twin shafts at British Coal's new mine at Asfordby, Leicestershire, UK. The test methods for assessing potential groundwater inflows to the shafts are discussed and details are given of the ground freezing scheme employed through the major aquifer zone in the Sherwood Sandstone at a depth of 375 metres. During shaft sinking pressure recovery tests were carried out to further assess potential inflows and the results are compared with those from the surface tests prior to sinking.

A broker relies heavily on mineral valuations and independent experts' reports to provide the fundamental information, both technical and commercial, which provides the basis of estimating the sharemarket value of securities and underlying assets. It is important to appreciate the significant variance that can occur between the market value and other types of valuation at a particular point in time. In general, most experts' reports and valuations seek to provide estimates of technical/fundamental or ""fair"" value which correspond to the Corporations Law and accounting standards requirements. They do not usually attempt to estimate (stock) market values and it is usually and quite correctly the broker's task to estimate market values on the basis of a technical appraisal and consideration of all other commercial, market and financial influences. Therefore ideally, an independent experts' report or information memorandum will include material relating to commercial and management aspects of a company as well as detailed technical reviews and fundamental valuations. Wherever sensible cash flow projections can be made, cash flow-derived valuations, usually based on discounted cash flow (DCF) calculations, remain the preferred valuation methodology. Brokers in general would not argue with this preference. However, there is a paucity of examples of valuations where alternative methods are applied as a check on the reasonableness of a DCF-based estimate.
