Following considerations of the effect of furnace size on pressure loss, pressure loss in front of tuyeres, gas flow in the lower parts of the furnace, the distribution of the burden and the gas flow in large blast furnaces is examined with particular reference to the burden distribution at the throat and the gas flow at high production rates. Improvement of gas flow is related to application of super-high top pressure and the use of moveable armour. A brief description of the NKK type moveable armour is given and its use in controlling the gas flow outlined. The operating results under controlled gas flow show an increase in production of Fukuyama No. 5 BF from 9,200 tpd to 11,000 tpd with a decrease in the fuel rate from 490 kg/thm to 460 kg/thm.

The Mangani mine in West Sumatra is historically one of the most important precious metal mines in Indonesia, although the past production by World standards is small, totall- ing 5.66 tonnes gold and 242 tonnes silver. The geology is dominated by a distinctive NW-SE graben structure formed by dextral splay faults from the Sumatran Fault System. Quartz- rhodochrosite-rhodonite-Ag-Au veins are hosted by Tertiary pyroxene andesite volcanics and quartz-phyllite conglomerates, on N-S tensional fractures which intersect the Mangani graben. Intrusive rocks include andesitic dykes, pyroxene microdiorite, and hornblende granodiorite. Quartz-epidote-pyrrhotite alteration is related to concealed intrusions. Precious metal vein mineralization is characterized by: high Ag/Au ratio (>25); complex sulphide mineralogy of Fe, Mn, Ag, Cu, Pb, Zn, As, Se and the occurrence of Sn as stannite; low total sulphide content (

Arc-type volcanic activity has been a major feature of the late Cenozoic geological evolution of the Pacific-Australian plate boundary in the northern New Zealand region. The timelspace distribution patterns of arc-type rocks reflect changes in the nature of the plate boundary as it has evolved. Inception of volcanism began in the north during earliest Miocene times (26 Ma) following ophiolite emplacement and during the next 10 Ma developed into a volcanic arc segment extending south to the present position of the central North Island. The northern part of the arc became extinct about 15 Ma ago, but activity continued in the central (Coromandel) part of the arc until about 5 Ma ago. In late Pliocene and Quaternary times volcanic activity has become concentrated in a northeast trending zone which is collinear with the Tonga-Kermadec Arc.

Australia has been a major exporter of LPG since production from the Bass Strait fields commenced in 1970. Export levels have been maintained through the seventies, the bulk of material being delivered to Japan. During this period the use of LPG in domestic markets grew only'slowly and demand was largely met by production from refineries with only shortfall supplies being drawn from naturally occurring sources. The domestic demand is forecast to grow significantly during the eighties as the traditional, automotive and petrochemical uses of LPG are expanded. An increasing amount of naturally occurring production will be directed into these markets. Despite this redirection the current level of exports (about 1.5 million tonnes per year) is likely to be maintained through much of the decade ahead as production from the Cooper Basin and the North West Shelf becomes available.

In the last two decades three-dimensional (3D) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations have become an important tool in engineering sciences. More recently, the safety requirements in underground railway stations have increased with regard to incidents. For this reason, existing underground stations (eg Munich, Strasbourg and Berlin) are being equipped with smoke extraction facilities to protect passengers from smoke and visibility impairment in the event of fire. In addition, designs of planned underground stations (eg Karlsruhe, Doha) also include these facilities.For the commissioning of ventilation engineering systems with complex structures, the functional testing of the whole technical installation are important, as are the acceptance tests of ventilation and equipment parts. This functional testing includes not only the technical inspection of the equipment but also the acceptance measurements of the capability of the equipment and the execution of hot- or cold-smoke tests to confirm the effectiveness of the ventilation system.Due to the fact that the overhead contact line and other sensitive installations were already installed in the tunnel roof at the time that smoke tests were proposed, hot-smoke tests with fire loads up to a maximum of 1 MW could only be executed. Therefore, the evidence of the attainability of the safety objective had to be provided computationally in this special case with a fire scenario of a heat release of 10 MW using CFD simulations.This paper presents the interplay between the results from acceptance testing and smoke tests and the use of 3D CFD simulation and virtual reality using the example of Allmend station, which was repositioned underground and is part of a new section of track from Lucerne railway station to Kriens in the Zentralbahn network. Total Development - in which he cited urban development, and intensive agriculture. 2. Partial development - in which he cited pastoral, and in this category would come National Parks. 3. Non development - in which category would fall the primitive or wilderness areas.

"In sulfide nickel deposits throughout the world, pentlandite and pyrrhotite are commonly found together along with varying amounts of chalcopyrite and platinum group minerals (PGMs). The mafic or ultramafic host silicates associated with the sulfide mineralisation commonly exhibit a complex assemblage of magnesium bearing silicates, many of which themselves contain significant nickel. Four types of ore are proposed, each presenting their own processing challenges. These are: economic grades of Ni, Cu and PGE (platinum group element) in a pyrrhotite-bearing sulfide deposit, with low pyrrhotite to pentlandite ratios  economic grades of Ni, Cu and PGE in a pyrrhotite-bearing sulfide deposit, with moderate to high pyrrhotite to pentlandite ratios uneconomic high pyrrhotite: low tenor deposits low-grade low sulfide, high MgO ± PGE deposits that can sometimes be economically mined and processed.The grades and recoveries of nickel concentrates produced from sulfide ores can be significantly impacted by the ore mineral texture, the nickel tenor of the sulfides, and the polytype of pyrrhotite which may be either hexagonal (non-magnetic) or monoclinic (magnetic). The mineralogy of the silicates is also of great importance, especially the magnesium silicates and those which tend to produce particles which are asbestiform or which affect slurry viscosity. Other magnesium silicates such as serpentine carry nickel in solid solution, limiting the recovery entitlement of nickel by flotation because serpentine is not amenable to sulfide flotation mechanisms. Differences in plant flow sheets and reagent assemblages are required to effectively separate these minerals.Experience from a variety of plant operations and from extensive flow sheet development programs are discussed. I offer some comments which might complement the valuable recent paper by De Angelis et al (1987), on the newly discovered nickel-copper deposit at Radio Hill.The authors have accepted subdivisions and correlations by Hickman (1977, 1983) although they are disputed (Fitton, Horwitz and Sylvester, 1975; Horwitz, 1979; Horwitz and Guj, 1986).Also, in my opinion, more plausible correlations of the Sholl Belt with Whim Creek Belt have been shown, but not discussed, in Hudson and Horwitz (1986, Figure 1). Our suggested correlations and subdivisions have appeared in publications and reports which are not readily available, but it is gratifying to note that many of the observations and conclusions of De Angelis et al are consistent with our conclusions of the Whim Creek Belt.The units of the Sholl Belt (of Hickman, 1983), between the Sholl Fault (Shear Zone) and the overlying Mt Bruce Supergroup to the south, equate well with units of the Whim Creek Belt. A basalt, characterised by an abundance of vesicles and similar in many ways to the Wararnbi Basalt of Fitton, Horwitz and Sylvester (I975), is well developed at the base of the succession, particularly in the southern part of the area (Figure 1). It is overlain by acid tuffs (locally metamorphosed, such as at Whundoo Mine) and associated acid and mafic lavas, similar to those of the Mons Cupri area. The mafics in the succession are marked by the absence of the numerous cherty sedimentary intercalations, such as the Marble Bar Chert, which occur in the Warrawoona Group; and they also lack the intense chertification that is prevalent in all parts of the proven areas of Warrawoona Group rocks.The Whim Creek Group is overlain, locally unconformably (two to three km east of Mount Negri), by the Negri Volcanics which include here the Louden Volcanics (unit Abu of Hickman, 1977), (Horwitz, 1979). The negri volcanics are an alternating sequence of variolitic and quench textured lavas not dissimilar to the highest units of the Sholl Belt (Figure 1). They range from high-Mg basalt to tholeitic andesites (Glikson et al, 1986, pp 79 and 84). The whole succession of the Sholl Belt is estimated to be of the order of four km in thickness, more consistent with the two km thick (Horwitz, 1979, Figure 1) Whim Creek area sequence than with the much thicker Warrawoona Group sequences. The Whim Creek Group (including the Negri Volcanics) is considered to be a widespread grouping (Fitton, Horwitz and Sylvester, 1976; Horwitz, 1979; Horwitz and Guj, 1986) which is prevalent in the northern part of the Pilbara Craton. It is considered by these authors to include the Mallina Formation turbidites of the trough area of Ryan (1965). One component, the Mons Cupri Volcanic, is about 2.95 Ga (Richards and Blockley, 1984). Between the Sholl Fault and Egina, the Whim Creek Group is intruded by large ultrarnafic to granophyric ills of the Millindinna Complex (Fitton, Horwitz and Sylvester, 1975), dated at 2.860 ± 002 Ga by Gulson and Korsh (1983) near the Sherlock River (south side of Caines Well Granite area). The Millindinna Complex has been equated to the same magmatic episode as the layered complexes of the Sholl Belt by Fitton, Horwitz and Sylvester (1975, p 20).

Oaky Creek Coal (OCC) has embarked on an ambitious program to fast track the introduction of Trench Mining into its current mining operations. The project has the capacity to allow the extraction of reserves at stripping ratios, uneconomical by conventional mining methods.Trench mining using Continuous Highwall Mining (CHM) technology reduces the in-situ stripping ratio to 4:3; compared with a stripping ratio of 20:1 using conventional mining techniques.

About 3km2 of the central Luise Caldera, in which the Lihir orebody is located, is geothermally active wit.lj gas seeps and fumaroles, and in some areas, a water table at boiling point.The proposed mine, adjacent to Luise Harbor, will be excavated to more than 200m below sea level and will extend into the geothermal system to depths at which current rock temperatures are 170¦C.

ABSTRACT' The first references to gold in New Guinea were by the Portuguese in 1525. The first significant discovery and gold rush was on Sudest Island in 1888 and was a natural extension of the rush that surged up Australia's eastern coast and ended at cook- town. Prospectors made a series of minor discoveries in coastal regions before the first large discovery at Wau/Edie Creek/Bulolo in 1925. Major post war gold discoveries were made at Bougainville, Frieda River, Porgera and Ok Tedi. On Misima Island a large bulk low grade deposit has been recognised surrounding old gold workings. Gold exploration has increased drama- tically since the lifting of a 3 year moritorium on new exploration areas in Noverrber 1982. A new bulk low grade gold discovery has been made on Lihir Island, north of Bougainville and a number of other promising areas are being drilled. Gold production is also expanding dramatically from current levels of 600,000 ounces to an anticipated 1.3 million ounces in 1985 with the opening of Ok Tedi. Other potential developments are likely to increase output above 2 million ounces by 1990. Papua New Guinea's world ranking as a producer is likely to move from 9th to 7th in 1985 reflecting the favourable geological potential, stable political environment and attractive development terms offered by the Government.

The City of KalgoorlieBoulder is situated approximately 600 kilometres to the east of Perth, and as the major regional centre of the Eastern Goldfields, supporting a population of approximately 25 000. The formation of Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines in 1989 brought the existing operating entities adjacent to the city under common ownership and management. The Joint Venturers forming the management company are Homestake Gold of Australia and Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie (a Normandy/Poseidon company).This traditional underground mining centre has been worked since 1893, yielding 40.5 million ounces of gold ore with an average head grade of TEN grams per tonne. Historically the heart of the operation has been the famous Golden We located on the Eastern perimeter of the city, in the area known as Fimiston. The other significant operations that form KCGM are the Mt Percy Open Pit and the Mt Charlotte Underground Operation.

A new synthetic reagent of the mercaptobenzoxazole class, 5- methyl-2-mercaptobenzoxazole, has been studied. This reagent exhibits powerful selective collecting action towards copper sulphides present in several complex ores, as demonstrated both by laboratory and pilot plant tests. Industrial production is expected to start in the near future. The way this reagent reacts with pure chalcocite has been studied utilising in situ FTIR techniques, adsorption tests, electrokinetic potential measurements and Hallimond cell flotation tests. The FTIR studies have indicated the nature of the surface phase. Adsorption isotherms obtained by the rest method have revealed the quantitative evolution of surface products, permitting the determination of surface coverage at various reagent concentrations. The electrokinetic potential has been utilised to verify the stability of individual species in diverse concentration ranges. Correlation of the results obtained has provided indications on the chemical interaction of this reagent with the surface and on the surface Arrangement.

The current methods for predicting pillar strengths are reviewed. A two-dimensional model, based on the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, is proposed for determining the compressive strength across the width of a long pillar. The model can be used to determine pillar strength and the depth of the crushed (ie yielding) zone from the pillar edges. The values of the parameters in the model, namely the cohesion and internal friction angle of the coal seam, friction angles at the contact of the coal seam with the roof and floor are determined by matching the strengths predicted by this model with the Bieniawski pillar strength formula for pillar width to height ratios up to 5. It is found that the derived values of these parameters are quite close to the results from laboratory tests. Based on the model, a preliminary analysis of pillar stability is made.

In the first half of 1987 two four metre diameter raise bore holes were drilled at the Olympic Dam Project for ventilation purposes. The first hole, 476 m x 4.0 m diameter was completed in 96 days, 35 days longer than scheduled. The second hole, 407 m x 4.0 m diameter was completed in 39 days, 2 days ahead of schedule. Both holes were drilled with a Robbins 121R rig using a Wirth head that consisted of 23 face cutters and 5 side cutters, supplied by a contractor. After the sites were located a grouting program was carried out to help seal off an aquifer between 160 and 180 m below the surface. Cavities discovered in the Andamooka Limestone were filled with concrete. Because of the overlying dune sands and clay both sites were pre-sunk to the competent Andamooka Limestone.

The main assets of a mining company are its orebodies; the second are the people who find and use them.The graphs in Figure 1 were derived from a paper by Rob Macdonald of Rothschild Australia presented to The AusIMM Centenary Conference in Adelaide earlier this year. They show that the value of the industry on the Australian Stock Exchange halved over the past decade, despite the re-investment of capital equivalent to its full market capitalisation. Why is this so? The average dividend yields for the ASX Mining Index was never above five per cent during that period and barely averaged 2.5 per cent. Why then is $Ai million capital re-investment per employee since 1960 not enough to generate a rate of return to investors better than lousy bank interest? Do the investing public no longer regard our industry's assets to be world class?

The samples studied in this paper were derived from the iron oxide facies of iron formations (IFs) of the Quadrilßtero Ferrffero, south-eastern Brazil. The rich-iron oxide varieties of the IFs can be regarded as Fe-O systems because they consist predominantly of aggregates of haematite and magnetite crystals. The study was based on carefully selected samples in which magnetite crystals occur as isolated large crystals set in a matrix of haematite grains. Optical microscopy and an electron microscope equipped with an electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) system were used to investigate the microstructural and crystallographic relationships involved in the phase transformation between magnetite and haematite. The magnetite crystals in the IF samples are partially transformed to haematite and this process is also known as martitisation. This transformation occurs along the crystallographic planes {111} of the magnetite producing a characteristic triangular pattern of interlocking lamellae of transformed haematite crystals that are oriented parallel to octahedral plane {111}. This new generation of haematite is referred to martite because of the martitisation process. EBSD analyses show that the magnetite and the new haematite crystals, martite, share crystallographic planes of highest atomic density, eg {111} and (0001), respectively, possibly due to the ccp and hcp atomic arrangement of the two crystals. Stereographic projections of these two planes therefore coincide when the maxima of their poles are plotted. However, the crystallographic orientation of the haematite crystals in the matrix shows maxima of (0001) poles that do not coincide with those of {111} planes of magnetite. Consequently, it is concluded that the direct transformation to haematite crystals retains the crystallographic orientation memory of the former magnetite crystals, possibly due to the similar manner whereby their atoms are packed together in the crystal structures. On the other hand, no such relationships are observed between magnetite and haematite crystal in matrix. This suggests that haematite grains in the matrix may have been formed by other processes rather than those involved in the iron oxide transformation observed within the magnetite grains.

The goal of the Bureau of Mines, U. S. De- partment of the Interior, diesel engine research program is to reduce exhaust emissions and mini- mize the risk of fires and explosions caused by the use of diesel-powered equipment in under- ground mines. Significant results of research conducted during the last 5 years are briefly described, with references to published reports on specific topics. Topics covered here include brief discussions of a newly completed diesel research laboratory, the effects of a fuel addi- tive on diesel exhaust particulate matter, the effect of diesel engine maintenance on emis- sions, a diesel particulate filter for equipment used in underground metal and nonmetal, and coal mines, and lastly, the prototype hydrogen- powered mine vehicle. These research accomplishments could favor- ably affect the mining industry by reducing the health and safety hazards associated with the use of diesel-powered equipment in underground Mines.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss briefly the problems encountered in designing and sinking No 7 shaft, and to present the methods employed in the operation.The illustrations accompanying the paper show the details of the construction of the equipment used in completing No 7 shaft, consequently the descriptions appearing in the text are brief outlines only. Mineral leases Nos 7 and 8, held by the Broken Hill South Limited, comprise an area of 69.5 acres. The length of the holding is approximately 2500 ft.The western orebodies, which are the main producing masses, enter the property at the northern bonndary. Generally, the dip of the orebody is to the west, and the pitch to the south, but local variations occur and even a reversal of pitch has been noticed. The angle of dip is approximately 70 degrees and the angle of pitch 45 degrees.
